Garda Heroes Rescue Homeless Man During Ophelia IF ANYTHING positive came of Hurricane Ophelia during the week it was the huge community spirit on display and nowhere more heart-warmingly so than in Killarney. Two members of An Garda Siochána have been hailed as heroes after they rescued a homeless man in the town during the height of the hurricane. As the storm raged, Garda Joe Sullivan and Garda Adrian O’Driscoll were on patrol at Mangerton View at 11am where they encountered a man in his 60s desperately taking shelter behind a garden wall. “The man, who is homeless, was curled up and in a bad way,” said Garda Sullivan. “He was badly clothed and his circumstances and condition were poor.”

Advertiser Takes On The Hackers The officers promptly whisked him to Killarney Station where he had a shower and was provided with hot food. Garda Sullivan and Garda O’Driscoll bought him fresh clothing and made arrangements to source proper accommodation for him, result-

ing in something of a happy ending to what could otherwise have been a life-threatening situation. It is understood that the man, who has been living in sheltered accommodation in the Waterford area, recently returned to Killarney. Well done to all involved!

WELL, you can’t say we don’t go to extreme lengths to bring you the latest news and this week we have been taking on cyber criminals from across the globe to do so. The Killarney Advertiser website has become so popular, thanks to our news, sport and video content, that it has attracted sustained attacks from countless would-be hackers who have been bombarding the site continuously in recent days in what are known as “brute force attacks” in a bid to gain access.

More Walkers Get Lost In Rhododendron WE’VE been campaigning in these pages for rhododendron to be tackled, as not only is it a scourge on our National Park, it also endangers locals and visitors alike. Less than a month after they rescued two walkers lost in rhododendron in Killarney National Park, Kerry Mountain Rescue Team were out again trawling a vast distance to pluck three walkers to safety last Sunday night. Some 22 personnel from Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and Kerry Water Rescue joined forces in the operation, searching from three base locations after the alarm was raised at

by Valentia Coast Guard at 6.30pm. The three people, who had been camping in the area since last Saturday, were brought to safety at around 1.30am on Monday morning. The incident took place in exactly the same place as the September rescue, the Glena/ Shehy area. “The three went off on Saturday from the Dinis/Old Weir Bridge area,” said Alan Wallace of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team. “They camped overnight and went up Shehy on Sunday and became a bit lost.” The lakeshore near Glena Bay on Lough Leane, where the rhododendron predominates.

Town Talk

‘Eileen Believed Life Is For Living’ Eve Kelliher meets Jerry Moriarty who is organising a special weekend in aid of the woman he describes as his soul mate

EILEEN RICE’S big passion in life was dancing – so it was only fitting that it was at the door of The Gleneagle Hotel Ballroom that she met her future partner. Her love for country music was something the vibrant Macroom native passed on to Jerry Moriarty, from the Gap of Dunloe. “Eileen was my soul mate. She taught me to dance and it was the best thing she ever did,” he said. The couple spent seven happy years together but tragedy was to part them. “I lost Eileen to cancer 16 months ago. But throughout her two-and-a-half illness she kept up her interest in dancing and counMike Denver

try music,” said Jerry. “Eileen would forget she had cancer when she was on the dance floor. And she made an incredible number of friends through dancing.” Just how popular she was only became clear to Jerry when he decided to organise a fundraiser in Eileen’s memory. The inaugural Eileen Rice Country against Cancer Memorial Weekend takes place from October 27 to 29 at The Gleneagle Hotel. “I wanted to celebrate her life while giving back to the people who helped her,” said Jerry. “One of Eileen’s mantras was that ‘life is for living’ and this weekend celebrates all that she loved.” All proceeds from the three-day event to go to Marymount Hospice and the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus. Big-name stars will be taking centre stage, including Michael Collins, Patrick Feeney, Jim Joe and Ann Riordan, Patrick O’Sullivan, Dermot Moriarty, Trudi Lawlor and Mike Denver. On the Sunday afternoon Uí Bhriain will perform a céilí and Sunday night Best of Friends will perform followed by Michael English. Tickets can be purchased on the night, from the INEC box office on 064-6671555 or by calling Jerry Moriarty direct on 0871716066.

Dining with Derry Clarke NINETY guests converged on the five-star Muckross Park Hotel and Spa’s evening with Michelin Star chef Derry Clarke last Friday.

Hurricane

20.10.17

Words: Eve Kelliher

Ophelia Rages Through Killarney THE streets of Killarney and roads throughout the county were deserted on Monday as Hurricane Ophelia battered the country. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar declared a national emergency as Ex-Hurricane Ophelia brought with it destructive gusts of 120 to 150 km/h countrywide. The hurricane tragically resulted in three deaths, in Counties Waterford, Tipperary and Louth. Fallen trees caused obstructions as the worst storm the country has seen in more than half a century passed over. Among the hard-pressed crews ensuring safe removal of trees and debris was Billy Tangney, of Billy Tangney Tree Maintenance, who helped keep the roads clear in the Muckross area. Trees were down in several parts of Killarney, including Ross Road, Muckross, Tiernaboul and throughout Killarney National Park. Schools remained closed on Monday and Tuesday and over 360,00 properties are without Workmen work hard to clear a fallen tree on the Gap of Dunloe Road. Council Chief Executive Thanks Public For Cooperation THE chief executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, has thanked members of the public in the county for their support and cooperation during Hurricane Ophelia on Monday. Chief executive Moira Murrell said the fact that members of the public in Kerry heeded the weather and safety warnings ensured public safety was assured: “This was due to the strong cooperation of members of the public who observed the advice to remain indoors and limit travelling,” she said. From Friday evening, Kerry County Council and other local agencies in-

cluding An Garda Síochána, the HSE, Kerry University Hospital, the Kerry Fire and Rescue Service and the Civil Defence were fully engaged in preparing for the storm. “From the moment Met Éireann issued the Code Level Red on Saturday evening, our team met regularly over the weekend to plan our response,” said Ms Murrell. “I would like to thank our operations staff for their assistance and I want to pay tribute to Kerry Civil Defence, Kerry Fire and Rescue Services, An Garda Síochána, the Army Reserve and ESB Networks for their support.”

Ghost Town Video Viewed 30,000 Times OUR video of a deserted Killarney on Monday morning has been viewed 30,000 times on Killarney Advertiser’s Facebook page. Never a slouch in the music stakes,

Kieran Healy’s choice of The Specials’ classic tune Ghost Town was a perfect match for the footage as it provided an overview of the stormlashed streets.

Views On The News Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column

Upland & Lowland & Lakeland THE storm has not stopped the Killarney red deer, although some were seeing running onto the road near Fossa at lunchtime when Ophelia was at its worst in the woodlands surrounding the national park and golf course. Afterwards, it was back to business with stags’ roars outdoing the gusting afterwind. Nothing is as photographed as this year’s Killarney red deer rut, it seems. Judging by the dramatic snaps appearing on social media, every long lens lover in the country has descended on the Killarney stags. Signs on lower ground warn not to go “too near the deer”. And 19-pointers have been spotted. No fewer than three large red stags have gathered harems this year on the foothills of Mangerton mountain and the roaring is non-stop, 24 hours, so much so you would wonder if they get any sleep. Certainly residents are getting little. The upland herd are more precious, methinks, than the lowland reds. And they look different to boot. They are bolder and wilder and fiercer and redder like the fern. And at least one stag has been gored. My problem is this: hundreds of hefty

people tear up and down Mangerton during the entire rutting season cutting a deep path through the rutting ground, the stags, their harems scattered, cease roaring for the day, and no-one bats an eyelid, or even yawns? How environmentally friendly is that? It seems to me that the mountains, lake and sea are being relentlessly promoted by State agencies without much regard for the environment, infrastructure, deer and other species like people who live in these areas. I have myself experienced the frightening speed of cars ferrying weekend walkers on the wholly inadequate road to Mangerton – and the inconsiderate way many park in their eagerness to get outdoors. I am not the only one. The people of the Black Valley recently had to form a delegation to a council meeting in Killorglin to ask for consideration, for basic signage for instance so they might be able to carry out their daily lives; there are no public car parks in Portmagee for the thousands coming to glimpse the Star Wars setting; traffic lights are needed on Slea Head, the mountains are scarred with deep wedges and on and on.

Lough Leane Incident Still With The Lake

THE recent report into the boating incident on Lough Leane in which 13 people including the master were tipped into the lake by either a rogue wave or weather or both and ended up clinging to their Gap boat shortly after setting out in September 2016 made for interesting reading, though perhaps not in the way you might think!! One of the main findings by the Marine Casualty Investigations Board centred on the failure to alert the emergency services at around 11.30am, the time of the incident. In fact it seems that nobody on the lake that busy morning of waterbus and several other craft raised the alarm – and concentrated instead on picking up the hapless master and his tourists. In reply to that alarm question, the owner of the boat raised through his solicitor the question of the availability of emergency services on the lake.

The response by the MCIB was to acknowledge that in fact “there are no emergency services on the lake”! This was a serious incident with risk to life and limb, and classed as such. “This was a serious marine casualty, which posed the threat of death or serious injury to persons,” were the words used by the MCIB. Indeed four different “authorities” including the NPWS, the Gardaí and the Marine Survey Office of the Department of Transport, are involved in the investigation in one way or the other. Other questions were raised by the only publication so far pointed at a lack of lake weather forecasting, lack of buoys and vhf coverage. So we have hundreds of tourists and fishermen and everything on the lakes of Killarney on a daily basis and we have and no major emergency plan… one hopes there are plans for a plan!

LEGENDARY American writer Ernest Hemingway’s first foray into fiction centred on a Killarney legend, it has emerged. The 1909 notebook by the ten-year-old who later went to chronicle the Spanish Civil War has survived Hurricane Irma in Key West in Florida in its Ziploc bag. Hemingway had not visited the southwest of Ireland at the time but his first story centres on O’Donoghue of Ross Castle on Lough Leane, and the legend surrounding the fall of the castle in 1652 to General Ludlow. It foreshadows the fact-fiction style of the writer who was himself to become a legend, according to the New York Times which ran the story on September 29 last. The Killarney legend, which used to be known by every local child, tells how the “The O’Donoghue” of the white horse returns on the anniversary of

the fall of his ruined castle (now partly re-constructed and a tourist attraction) to ride the lake on his white horse. The untitled story takes up about 14 pages of the notebook, which also includes bits of poetry and notes on grammar, and punctuation, according to the piece written by Robert K Elder who has written a book on Hemingway material. The true content of the stained notebook was only realised in May and it lay among other Hemingway material. When Hurricane Irma struck it was feared the archive may have been be blown off the island entirely. However last Wednesday, past fallen trees and debris on the streets left by the hurricane, the house where it was held was found to be undamaged and the notebook, tucked inside a Ziploc freezer bag, and other material was intact.

LIFE COVER

How much

do I need?

Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Qualified Financial Adviser, Eoin Liston, Premier Financial Services, discusses how Premier Financial determines how much life cover you need.

This is probably the most common question financial advisers get asked and in a lot of cases the standard answer would be insure somewhere between 6, 8 or 10 times your salary. The truth is unless you have an in-depth knowledge of an individual’s current financial situation, their family/dependants and their lifestyle and financial goals it is not possible to calculate the correct amount for Life Cover. There are a number of highly effective methods of calculating the amount of life cover needed if you have dependants. 1. The Human Capital Method This method is a simple mathematical equation, we can calculate the present value of every after-tax Euro you would earn between now and when you would retire and we simply insure that amount. This is probably the most accurate way of calculating how much your family would lose if you died, but it can make things quite expensive as it doesn’t take into account other sources of income that may be payable in retirement or your families reduced costs as your mortgage for example would be cleared. 2. The Expenses Method This method quantifies your family’s current annual expenses and then puts enough cover in place for this amount until you retire. Although this is a good method for calculating life cover, it doesn’t take into account other sources of income which can be used to fund your family’s lifestyle.

3. The Premier Financial Method

• We will calculate your current net annual earned income • We then account for the state widowers pension which would be due to your family if you die, or any other income you have e.g. rental income. • Next, we reduce this by the value of your annual mortgage repayments which are to be cleared on death. This gives us an annual income figure that your family will need to fund their lifestyle until retirement without over/under insuring you as the 1st and 2nd method tend to do.

For a FREE initial consultation call EOIN on 066 7185723 today

Each individual’s circumstances will determine which type of protection option meets their needs, but whichever route you chose, all it’s really about is putting life cover in place to ensure that the necessary funds will end up in the right hands at the right time, in both a cost efficient and a tax efficient manner. We advise that you seek professional advice as the information given is a guideline only and does not take into account your particular circumstances.

Pedal Power Generates €1.5M

CHARITY champions cycled into the limelight last Friday when the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle presented cheques totalling more than €1.5 million to the beneficiaries. Cathal Walshe, cycle PRO, was MC for the celebration night as it unfolded in the INEC Killarney. “Volunteerism at its best was on show and we were keen to honour the charities and volunteers who work tirelessly to provide support and services to the people of Kerry and across Ireland.” The cycle event, which will take place on Saturday, July 7, next year, is the biggest one-day charity fundraising event in Ireland. To get a sense of the scale of fundraising undertaken, a total of €120 per cyclist has been directly donated to the charity beneficiaries. Now heading into its 35th year, the event attracts over 9,000 leisure cyclists, from Ireland and abroad, to complete the scenic Ring of Kerry route, while at the same time fundraising for deserving charities. Among the beneficiaries this year is Kerry Parents & Friends Association, which can now purchase three new transport vehicles as part of its Buy a Bus campaign. Cyclists can register for the 2018 cycle from March 10, 2018.

Since 1998 the awards have acknowledged the achievements of young people from Kerry between the ages of 14 years and 19 years. “We often underestimate the worth of our youth who are both innovative and important to our future,” said Chief Superintendent Tom Myers. “The awards have a positive effect on our wider community and I would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to Lee Strand for their continued sponsorship and support over the past 20 years.” The closing date for receipt of nominations is Friday, December 8. Wedding of the Week

From Killarney To Italy

THEIR paths first crossed in the Allegro in Killarney after a night out and seven years later Rachel Willms and Gerald Curran exchanged wedding vows Ger popped the question on Christmas morning, 2015, in Rachel’s family home in Muckross. The bride and groom, from Fossa, were married recently in Church of the Gesu, Frascati, Italy, and held their reception in the nearby Villa Grazioli. Helping the newlyweds celebrate with their guests were both sets of parents, Joan and Alex Willms and Agnes and Humphrey Curran. Rachel’s sisters Elizabeth and Rebecca Willms were her bridesmaids along with their cousin Victoria Huggard. Also lending their support were Ger’s brothers Tom and Brendan Curran and his cousin David O’Donovan. The bride arrived at the church in style in a vintage Fiat 500. “Myself and dad had the best time driving around Frascati on the way to the church. Everyone in the town waved and cheered as we drove past...we felt like celebrities!” she said. “The whole day was like a fairytale,” said Rachel. “Our bridesmaids and groomsmen were amazing. The bridesmaids even managed to keep me calm when the priest’s car broke down and he was an hour late!” Rachel looked stunning in a Hayley Paige dress while the groom cut a dapper dash in a Hugo Boss suit. Photographer Domenico Costabile captured the big day on camera. The newlyweds honeymooned on the island of Ischia, near the Amalfi Coast. Rachel is a homepage editor at Microsoft and Ger is a software development manager for Rapid7. They reside in Churchtown, Dublin.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION Traditionally legal disputes have been referred to the Courts for hearing and for a decision to be reached. There is however a significant move towards Alternative Dispute Resolution. As the title would suggest this is an umbrella description of different ways to try and resolve disputes that can arise from time to time. This mainly incorporates Mediation and Arbitration.

to a dispute where the process is thereafter governed by the Arbitration Acts. This will involve formal documents filed by both parties and may involve discovery of documentation and determination of preliminary issues. It will ultimately be heard in a formal hearing by the Arbitrator with a decision that is final being issued at the conclusion of the case.

Mediation is a process whereby a trained and accredited Mediator is appointed by the parties to a dispute to try and agree or mediate a settlement or agreement. It is a process that very often involves the preparation of a position paper by each party which the Mediator can utilise to narrow the issues of dispute and to agree certain matters with an attempt to agree contentious issues. It is a process which is dependent on goodwill of both parties to the dispute to try and find a resolution.

Alternative Dispute Resolution is very often built into contracts such as Building Agreements or Insurance Contracts which will require the process to be undertaken instead of Court Proceedings. The process is, in theory at least, quicker and more cost effective than traditional proceedings.

Arbitration is a more formal process where an Arbitrator is appointed

Legislation has been proposed that will, if ultimately signed into Law, refer a wider range of disputes for Alternative Dispute Resolution in an effort to speed up the process thereby saving time and cost for the parties.

Entertainment

B E L E C S W E N ‘She Completely Changed My Life’

DAISY LOWE has said that new “best friend” Louise Redknapp has “completely changed” her life and given her the confidence to pursue her goals. The British model gushed about her new friend in her Femme podcast, crediting her with helping her turn her life around after they appeared together on last year’s Strictly Come Dancing. “I don’t use best friend often especially with someone I’ve only known for a year but Louise Redknapp completely changed my life and the two of us became these kind of wonderful confidence boosters for one another,” Lowe said. “I would never in a million years have the confidence to set up my own business, my own company, my own podcast if it wasn’t for the incredible nurture of one of my best friends. “We’re like each other’s cheerleaders. For a woman to be so firmly in the sisterhood, and so selfless and so kind, it meant the world.” Lowe is also credited with helping Redknapp relaunch her career following her appearance on the BBC dancing show.

Kit Harington’s Prank On Rose Leslie Went Horribly Wrong THEY’RE everyone’s favourite Game of Thrones couple and Kit Harington and Rose Leslie (aka Jon Snow and Ygritte) recently announced their engagement, Harington appeared on Jonathan Ross last weekend to chat about his new BBC drama, Gunpowder, and revealed the story behind an April Fools’ Day prank he played on his fiancée – which involved leaving the model of a head inside a fridge – which went pretty horrifically.

The former Eternal star is currently appearing on stage in a new production of Cabaret and is back in the recording studio. Last week Redknapp confirmed that she was now living apart from husband Jamie Redknapp. “He’s an amazing man and we’ve had 20 good years together. I know he’s trying to understand that I do need to do this,” she told Stella magazine. Speaking about the future of their relationship she added: “I have no idea what is going to happen, all I know is that I fought for this, it’s taken everything, but this is something I need to do – for me.”

Reese Witherspoon

Says She Was Assaulted By A Director At 16 OSCAR-WINNING actress Reese Witherspoon has said she was assaulted by an unnamed film director when she was 16. In a speech at an Elle Women in Hollywood event on Monday, the Legally Blonde and Walk the Line star said she felt “true disgust at the director”. And she felt “anger... at the agents and producers who made me feel silence was a condition of my employment”. She said she had suffered multiple other “experiences of harassment and sexual assault” during her career.

06.10.17

She didn’t go into detail about her experiences as a 16-year-old, but added: “I wish I could tell you that that was an isolated incident in my career, but sadly, it wasn’t.” The A-lister, who also stars in TV series Big Little Lies, said she didn’t speak about those experiences “very often”. But she went on: “After hearing all the stories these past few days... the things that we’re kind of told to sweep under the rug and not talk about, it’s made me want to speak up and speak up loudly because I felt less alone this week than I’ve ever felt in my entire career.”

“My family does April Fools,” Kit told Jonathan, “Her family doesn’t do April Fools. She didn’t know the date and after that she was in tears. And I was there going, ‘April Fools!’ It didn’t go down well. “It was far [from] the reaction I had hoped for. When my laughing died down, it took some making up… She pretty much told me if I did it ever again that would be it and I think that’s marriage included.”

LENA HEADEY

Shares Her Story STORIES about Harvey Weinstein are coming thick and fast as actresses are finally coming out and speaking about their experiences with the movie mogul. It began with eight women speaking out against Weinstein in a bombshell New York Times report while The New Yorker also revealed 13 different women’s accounts of alleged sexual harassment, assault or rape. A spokesperson for Weinstein said at the time, “Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr Weinstein.” In the last couple of weeks however, many more actresses have come forward with their stories about their encounters with Weinstein, including Cara Delevingne, Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie and now Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey. In a series of tweets, Headey spoke about two encounters she had with Weinstein.

Expect Your Parish To Be Someone’s Screensaver Beaufort travel blogger Hazel Joy was impressed when she attended TBEX in Killarney

I’VE TOYED with the idea of attending TBEX conferences in the past so the convenience of Killarney as this year’s European venue was too good an opportunity to pass up. The Travel Blog Exchange (TBEX) is the world’s largest conference for professional online travel bloggers and influencers, and so was the perfect opportunity to hone my online writing skills, learn the entrepreneurial ropes of the industry, along with developing online strategies to gain more readers. Fáilte Ireland organised pre and post-conference countywide tours for international delegates whilst the INEC/Gleneagle Group along with the local business community hosted the event with their usual high skill. Whilst this conference has been invaluable to my development as an online content creator, the real winner from TBEX Europe 2017 will be Killarney and Kerry. With approximately 650 attendees who have a combined online audience of approximately 300 million, this event is a massive marketing opportunity for our county to make a significant presence in this increasingly popular medium. And I’m happy to report that delegates were in awe of our beautiful county and of the hospitality we

had to offer. So expect your parish to be someone’s screensaver soon. • Hazel Joy is an amateur travel blogger whose site arrivalshall.com is read in over 100 countries on all continents. A Billion Reasons To Celebrate EUROPE’S biggest blogger gathering made a huge impression when it took place in Killarney recently – three billion impressions to be precise. More than three billion Twitter impressions were generated globally in relation to Ireland and the TBEX conference over the two weeks as more than 600 of the world’s top travel social influencers gathered in Killarney to attend TBEX Europe, the largest gathering of travel bloggers, writers, content creators and social media influencers in Europe. This highly influential group – with a combined reach of 380 million travel fans - also explored Ireland over the fortnight on bespoke Fáilte Ireland fact-finding trips to experience first-hand what Ireland’s Ancient East, the Wild Atlantic Way and Dublin have to offer.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Are Congratulations In Order? THIS time last year Killarney honoured home-grown Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender and 12 months after he was presented with the town’s Order of Innisfallen award, he is reported to have exchanged wedding vows with Oscar winner Alicia Vikander. Reports abounded all week of the Fossa man’s wedding in Ibiza last Saturday. The couple are said to have married in a private ceremony with family and friends. While there has been no official confirmation, websites and newspapers have been running the story through-

out the week. They pair have been spotted wearing wedding rings and reports suggest the celebrations began last Friday as they and their friends enjoyed lunch on the beach before the reported ceremony on Saturday. Michael and Alicia met when they starred as a husband and wife in the movie The Light Between Oceans in 2014. A year ago Alicia accompanied Michael to the Order of Innisfallen ceremony which recognised his work promoting Killarney on the world stage.

Orange Weather Warning MET EIREANN has issued an orange weather warning for Munster coastal counties, Kerry, Cork, Clare and Waterford on Saturday. Storm Brian is expected to bring winds of 65-85km/h with gusts of 110-130km/h as it tracks eastwards across the country. Affected counties are asked to clear any loose fittings in properties and to expect further disruption to power, transport and travel. At present, the main concern is softened soil due to heavy rain in combination with weakened root systems in trees, af-

ter Hurricane Ophelia on Monday, which could lead to further hazards over the course of Saturday. Localised flooding is also expected due to heavy precipitation within the storm system. Coastal flooding may occur at high tides. Repairs to electricity and water will be disrupted in some areas over the weekend. Members of the public are urged to excise extreme caution on Saturday and told to avoid coastal locations, upland hills and mountains.

Trump Corner ‘Who Paid For It, Russia, The FBI Or The Dems (Or All)?’ US PRESIDENT Donald Trump has again taken to Twitter to promote conspiracy theories. He has appeared to suggest that the FBI and Russia may have colluded to fund the infamous dossier that alleged links between his team and the Kremlin. Taking to Twitter, the US President said: “Workers of firm involved with the discredited and Fake Dossier take the 5th. GPS, the firm that helped produce the dossier, refused to answer questions on Wednesday in a private meeting with the House Intelligence Agency. Peter Fritsch and Thomas Catan invoked their Fifth Amendment rights, saying they would only cooperate with “serious” investigations that strike a balance between “Congress’s right to information and our client’s privileges and legal obligations”. Fusion GPS’s client is former British spy Christopher Steele, who compiled a report that made allegations of Russian financial and personal links to Mr Trump’s campaign and associates.

Rome Escape Line Heroine Dies Aged 93 TRIBUTES have been paid to World War 2 heroine Gemma Sands (nee Chevalier) died peacefully on October 1. One of the leaders of the Rome Escape Line, Gemma passed away in the presence of her family, at her home in Aldershot in England. Inspired by the bravery of her widowed mother Henrietta, and still only in her mid-teens Gemma played a very important role in the Rome Escape Line for Killarney native Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, as she moved escapees and vital messages and supplies during World War 2 in Rome. Despite the grave and very real risk to their own freedom and lives, Gemma, her mother and some of her seen siblings, helped to keep many Allied escapees safe from the grasp of the Nazi’s during this time.

Shortly after the war ended, Gemma met and married English soldier Kenneth Sands serving with the postwar military administration in Rome. They were married by Monsignor Hugh and they subsequently moved to Aldershot in 1946. Gemma was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) and was awarded a certificate thanking her for all that she had done by Field Marshall Alexander, head of Allied forces in the Mediterranean. Chair of the Memorial Society Jerry O’Grady said, “It is hard to imagine how much courage it took for a 17-year-old girl to do what she did in the Nazi occupied city of Rome, where escapees and those that were helping them were being mercilessly hunted down by the Gestapo.”

Red Carpet For Kerry Film Festival

Killarney’s Liberace To Sing Out In Windy City KNOWN to all as Killarney’s Liberace, Jack Patrick Healy has been in showbusiness for 16 years. He started playing music professionally with his father Gerard at the tender age of seven and at 12 fell in love with musical theatre when he joined the Tara Little Stage School. “From then I wanted to be a star of Broadway musicals or West End shows,” he told Killarney Advertiser. He will be known to many from his performances as resident singer and pianist in the Liquid Lounge in the Killarney Grand Hotel. “This has given me the chance to perform hundreds of musicals a night,” he said. His dream was to step into the

spotlight as a solo act in the United States by the age of 22. “I have just turned 23 and heading to perform in Chicago on November 6 for a week of performances – so I am just one year off my goal,” he said. It is as Killarney’s Liberace that Jack has found his niche. “There are many Elvis impersonators, millions of Adele and Celine Dion tributes, but absolutely no ‘Liberace’ artists from Killarney to Las Vegas,” he said. “All of my costumes and props have been flown out to the Windy City a month ago.” You can check out his new promotional video, directed and produced by Lucas Machowski, at www.facebook. com/jackpatrickhealyofficial

Members Clash Over Eighth Amendment Committee Vote TWO members of the Oireachtas committee examining the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution have clashed over the effectiveness of the hearings following yesterday’s vote, with one member describing it as a “sham process”. Independent Senator Rónán Mullen described the committee as a cynical process designed to convince the public that a change in “a life-saving law” was necessary. Mr Mullen was speaking on Today with Sean O’Rourke following Wednesday night’s vote by the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution to agree not to recommend the retention of the

amendment in full. Mr Mullen said the committee had heard from dozens of abortion advocates, but just three or four witnesses who would have advocated the pro-life position. His comments were in contrast to those of Fine Gael TD Kate O’Connell, who said the committee had listened to extensive advice from members of the legal community, human rights representatives, and the World Health Organisation before the vote. Mr Mullen maintained that there had been no interest in hearing from pro-life groups. In response, Ms O’Connell said that there had been a clear-cut result following the vote.

A SCREENING of The Crest at Cinema Killarney opened the 18th Kerry Film Festival yesterday. The festival runs until October 22, bringing exceptional short films from around the world along with national and regional

programmes. The Killarney Plaza Hotel will be the place to be tomorrow, Saturday, October 21, from 2pm to 4pm, with Industry sessions including panel discussions. Registration as at 1.45pm.

Major Tourism Forum On Its Way To Town IN JUST three weeks’ time the Let’s Talk Tourism forum will take place in Killarney. Last year’s conference was highly successful and this year’s event is scheduled for November 10. There is a fascinating line-up of speakers, including Mark Henry of Tourism Ireland, Peter Bellew, incoming chief operations officer of Ryanair, travel writer Pol O Conghaile and many more.

“The forum, which will be moderated by Olivia O’Leary, promises to be engaging and entertaining (not preachy),” said Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Paul O’Neill. “It is a partnership between Chamber and numerous other organisations. “It is only right that we in Killarney host such an event.”

Ophelia Interrupts Kerry Honeymoon NEWLYWEDS honeymooning in Kerry had to put their plans on hold on Monday after Storm Ophelia battered the country - but they still managed to make the most of it. Paula and Carlos Castillo spent the day taking shelter from the storm in The Moorings in Portmagee, where staff kindly afforded them a lock-in. Violent winds and heavy rain raged outside, and while the couple said it was scary experiencing that, they consider themselves “very lucky”. “It was very rough in the morning and things got a bit calmer in the afternoon. Obviously a lot of damage has been done across the country, so we were pretty lucky in comparison to other people and we’re thankful for that,” Paula told Independent.ie.

“There was us, a French family who had a two-year-old daughter and then the staff, so we all tried to make the most of the day.” Paula, who is originally from Dublin, has been living in Vancouver, Canada for the last seven years. That’s where she met her now-husband Carlos and the couple decided to have both their wedding and honeymoon in Ireland. Their big day was in Boyne Hill House in Co Meath and the pair have been travelling around Kerry since. “We knew it was a bit risky having an October wedding, especially with Irish weather, but we didn’t expect a storm like that to hit. We still managed to have some fun and it hasn’t ruined our honeymoon,” they said.

Calls For Pedestrian Bridge IN RECENT years I have on a number of occasions submitted notices of motion to Kerry County Council calling on Iarnród Éireann and Bus Éireann to invest in a pedestrian bridge linking Killarney Railway Station and the adjacent bus station. These motions have been unanimously agreed by my council colleagues. In a reply received by Kerry County Council on September 13, 2017, Iarnród Éireann states that in recent years the demands for capital investment have significantly exceeded the available funding. It, therefore, informs

that the provision of the pedestrian bridge is not an immediate priority. It accepts that the proposal has merit but the company is not in a position to develop the project in the short term. I very much regret this response as many people, particularly the elderly and those with disability and with children are adversely impacted upon by the present situation. I ask both companies to reconsider. Michael Gleeson (Councillor), Clasheen, Killarney

Meeting On Alzheimer’s Daycare Centre AT THE most recent Health Forum meeting in Cork, I called on the Health Service Executive to engage with people affected by Alzheimer’s disease, and their carers, to discuss options regarding providing a daycare centre in Killarney. In their response, the HSE stated that they were not aware of the need for such a facility in Killarney. I made it clear that there is a growing number who need this service in the greater Killarney area. I requested that the HSE meet with these people suffering from this disease, their carers, and anyone impacted by it. I received a commitment that the person dealing with this issue in the Kil-

larney area would be willing to meet and discuss this proposal further. Before this meeting takes place, it is very important to get the views of all those dealing with Alzheimer’s, or any form of dementia. A public meeting will be held in the Killarney Heights Hotel, on Tuesday, October 24, at 8pm. The purpose of this meeting is to take on board the views expressed, and to form a small group, which will then meet with the relevant person from the HSE, to make them aware of the need for a daycare centre in Killarney. 20.10.17 Netflix - Mindhunter

Read

The Bookworm

Reviewed: Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King and Owen King BOTH of Stephen King’s sons are novelists, and his wife Tabitha is also an author. Joe, the elder, jettisoned the family surname to publish as Joe Hill, but did so while remaining in the horror genre that made his father famous. Although Owen kept the King name, he has selected a less genre-specific route, and it is his name, perhaps sur-

prisingly, that shares the cover of this first full-length King collaboration between father and son. In Sleeping Beauties, the women of the world fall prey to the mysterious Aurora sickness, which leaves them cocooned and inert. Only one woman appears entirely unaffected by the disease: Evie Black, who is quickly revealed as a supernatural entity.

On The Box Painting the Nation RTÉ One

Sunday, 6.30pm PAULINE MCLYNN presents the grand final from Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre. The three remaining contestants will be whittled down to two after painting a still life of historical scientific instruments. The final pair must then paint a landscape of the castle itself before this year’s champion is selected by the judges. Last in the series.

MINDHUNTER, Netflix’s new ten-episode drama series shepherded by David Fincher, is a seventies period piece detailing the origins of criminal profiling on the homicidal and insane, Mindhunter has a lot in common with Fincher’s modern masterpiece, Zodiac, except, I guess you could say it’s a bit quirkier? Stylistically, Mindhunter has the cold, sterile look of all of Fincher’s thrillers. With his signature green-tinted frame, Fincher makes

the first two episodes resemble his other Netflix project, House Of Cards. He is able to create an underlying sense of dread even when the bad guys are already locked away and the meetings take place during daylight. Mindhunter may be set 40 years ago but there are unsettling parallels to our own era, and anyone who’s been lapping up all the true crime stories in recent times will certainly binge their way through this.

And whether you choose to dine out en famille or throw a party at home, the world is your oyster when it comes to marking your child’s First Holy Communion or Confirmation. Dining out options abound, particularly in the greater Killarney area where numerous restaurants and hotels are offering menus tailor-made for these all-important occasions. Younger diners will have specific requirements and the catering industry

has been quick on the uptake when it comes to serving them in style. Not only that but the prices and atmosphere will also be family-friendly. Likewise with specific dietary requirements, hotel staff will be only too happy to tailor their menus to suit your needs.

Catering to your needs THERE is a huge variety of choice available when it comes to hosting a celebration to mark Communion or Confirmation in your home. Local catering companies are well placed to help you throw a party that will help you savour this special day with your nearest and dearest.

Preparing Your Child For

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION THE “Do This in Memory” programme is a parish-based programme supporting parents/ guardians with a child preparing for First Holy Communion. It highlights the importance of the Saturday evening/Sunday Mass as a celebration where we gather, are nourished by the Word of God and the Bread of Life, and are sent out to live the Gospel. It offers activities and resources for both parents/guardians and children to continue their preparation at home, mainly through the ‘Grapevine’ Newsletter. It offers the children the opportunity to engage in a special way in the Mass on these designated Sundays. It is a resource to parish communities to assist them in the preparation of

children for First Holy Communion. It complements the school-based work in the context of the parish at worship together. It emphasises that the preparation of the children is the responsibility of the home, parish and parish. It has long been acknowledged that the most effective catechesis of children takes place when home, school and parish each accept their share of responsibility. It also acknowledges the home as the most important and significant place, where the faith of our children is nurtured, nourished and sustained. See www.dioceseofkerry.ie for further information and valuable resources on helping prepare your child for his or her First Holy Communion.

Celebrating Communions & Confirmations Helping Children Prepare For Their

CONFIRMATION THE celebration of Confirmation is a sacred and important moment on a long journey of faith development. Together with Baptism and First Holy Communion it opens the door to full membership of the Christian community. It is the beginning of the young adult’s ownership of their faith, supported and nourished by their family and their faith community. There are many ways you can help your child prepare for Confirmation and these are outlined in helpful detail on the Kerry Diocese’s website, www.

dioceseofkerry.ie Practise your own faith regularly and encourage your child to do likewise. Attend Mass on Sundays and try to make attendance at mass a family event. Praying at home is also advised, as is showing an active interest in your child’s religious work. Discuss the choosing of a Confirmation name and the choosing of a sponsor. Parents are also advised to share their memories of their Confirmation with their child.

Celebrating Communions & Confirmations

Activities for all ages GUESTS at any Communion or Confirmation celebration will need to be entertained and this can involved laying on a variety of activities. If you are having friends of family around, then bear in mind that fun should be the order of the day to help you celebrate the important date – all it takes is a little planning and let yourself and your family be entertained. There is a whole host of ideas out there if you want to ensure young people and the young at heart enjoy a day to remember. Hiring a magician or balloon artist will keep everyone from tots to tweenies entertained for hours. Another idea is to have designated games co-ordinator who will have youngsters on their toes and help them let off steam in style.

Give a child a gift to cherish SEEKING the perfect gift for children making their Confirmation or First Holy Communion? If your child, godchild, niece, nephew, grandchild, or family friend is about to celebrate this landmark occasion, then a present that they will cherish for a lifetime would be very welcome. While money has been a traditional gift in Ireland, some may want to choose something a little personal, to remind the child of the sacrament and its importance. These days, treasured keepsake gifts can be found to suit all budgets, from picture frames to inscribed jewellery, and from prayer books and rosary beads to a commemorative photoshoot.

Bouncy castles always go down a treat at family parties, as does the opportunity to let them take centre stage to sing and dance. A disco will ensure all ages get to show their stylish moves, so make sure you have a playlist at the ready. You can either hire a professional to do the honours of DJ or maybe someone in the family has an innate ability to ensure the dance-floor remains full all evening. Of course outings and excursions are also a tried and tested way of marking a special occasion like this. Again you can map out your own itinerary, keeping a careful eye on the opportunities out there on a seasonal basis. Make sure to plan ahead and prepare for all weathers!

A picture paints a THOUSAND WORDS SPECIAL moments captured on camera in an album of your child’s Communion or Confirmation will be something they will treasure forever. These portraits tend to come alive to the viewer, sparking wonderful memories even years after the occasion and capturing the magic of this monumental occasion in a child’s life. If you are hiring the services of a photographer or bringing your child for a studio session to capture the big event on camera for posterity, then do your research. Some photographers

specialise in First Communion and Confirmation portraits and photography. You could check with your photographer in advance to see what sort of style you seek. You may seek a traditional studio photoshoot, or reportage-style shoot, outdoors. Each portrait session is personalized to the individual first communion recipient or confirmation candidate, typically yielding over a dozen unique shots.

Citrus Spritz WE ALL love a citrus scent during the warmer months but finding one that stays the course for autumn and winter can be a challenge. Step forward Pomelo by Jo Loves. Created by Jo Malone, it is a clean grapefruit-infused citrus scene made up of her favourite summer memories. But though it opens with a burst of sunshine, this energising fragrance dries down to give off an earthy, warm patchouli base.

Movie Magic A LIVELY medium pink coral shade, Amazing Grace Matte Revolution lipstick is perfect for both day and evening wear. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury was inspired by none other than Grace Kelly when she developed this vibrant, wearable coral shade. The lipstick contains antioxidants and soothing orchid to help soften, protect and hydrate.

Dressed To Impress STUDENTS from transition year at St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School did themselves proud when they raised cash for the Irish Cancer Society. The students were taking part in the Dare to Care challenge in affiliation with Today FM. “The objective was to dare someone to do something in order to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society,” said school PRO Vivienne Buckley.

“The students’ dare involved donning costumes of their choice for the duration of the school day. However the students were not confined to the school grounds and had to attend a photography class in the Demesne and also had to collect money in town. Needless to say, they turned heads with their eye-catching attire! “Their efforts were worthwhile as they raised €500 for the Irish Cancer Society.”

WRC Report

Meeke & Nagle Flat-out KRIS MEEKE and Paul Nagle head to the penultimate round of the World Rally Championships in Wales next weekend (October 26) off the back of an absolutely dominant win last time out. The Citroen crew have to be favourites for their home event, sadly at this point in the championship from being pre-season favourites should have the championship sewn up or at the very least be in the hunt, such is the cruelty of high level professional sports. It is clear from the results this year that both car and crew have been

challenged to breaking point but what is also clear is that Meeke and Nagle are the only crew to challenge championship leader Sebastian Ogier on level ground and Citroen clearly have the resources to turn an underperforming car around. The determination and resolve required to get any sports person to the top of their sport, that same determination and resolve is constantly challenged to keep on top. Furthermore motorsport is unique from other sports because it is man and machine. A very ex-

pensive machine backed by very powerful people with very high expectations. Pressure for crews is all around. However with two rounds remaining and a dominant last time out, Meeke and Nagle have to feel that fortunes are turning and an end-ofseason hat-trick is on the cards laying down a marker for next year’s championship. Wales is the closest WRC event for Irish fans that will travel to the Welsh forests lining the routes throughout the event offering their support.

to Ferrari’s €60 spark plug failure and Vettel’s dramatic start line accident in Singapore. Vettel has a mathematical chance of winning the championship but Hamilton’s current form should rule this out. What may offer hope for Vettel is Max Verstappen is now in the mix and could upset Hamilton’s rhythm. We have already seen how Vettel has damaged his championship chances trying to keep Max Verstappen behind and Hamilton could do the same, after all they are racers wanting to win. It isn’t over yet…

12TH ANNIVERSARY

BARRY

GUERIN

LYNE (NEE MURPHY)

HEALY

In loving memory of Eddie Barry, late of Chapel Lane, Killarney, who passed away on 23rd October 2004.

Fondest memories, every day, of the dearest mother Cathy Guerin, wife of the late Cornelius Guerin, late of “Irish Cottage”, Muckross Road, Killarney, who sadly left us on 21/10/2005.

In loving memory of Hannah Mary Lyne (nee Murphy) Knockeendubh, Tralee Road, Killarney Who died on October 28th, 2015.

In loving memory of Tim Healy, late of 24 Mangerton View, Killarney who died on 22nd October 2005.

Happy memories keep forever, Of days when we were all together, They bring a smile and often a tear, And always a wish, That you were still here. From his cousins.

5TH ANNIVERSARY BARTLETT

In loving memory of Sylvester (Sylvie) Bartlett, 46 O’Kelly’s Villas, Killarney 24 October 2012. Don’t think of him as gone away His journey’s just begun. Life holds so many facets This earth is only one. Just think of him as resting From the sorrows and the tears. In a place of warmth and comfort Where there are no days and years.

“For Mam” “Surprised By Joy” “Surprised by Joy,impatient as the wind,I turned to share the transport , Oh,with whom but thee, Deep buried in the silent tomb, That spot, which no vicissitude can find, Love ,faithful love, Recalled thee to my mind, But how can I forget thee, Through what power, even for the least division of an hour, Have I been so beguiled, As to be blind to my most grievous loss, That thoughts return ,Was the worst pang ,That sorrow ever bore, Save One, One only, When I stood forlorn, Knowing my hearts best treasure was no more, That neither present time ,nor years unborn,Could to my sight, That heavenly face restore” William Wordsworth(1770-1850)

Think how he must be wishing That we could know today. How nothing but our sadness Can really pass away.

“Always thinking of you Mam. Also remembering, most especially, their beloved son Cornelius, who very sadly, and too young, left us on 22/9/14. From your children Mary, Patrick, Margaret, Timothy, Catherine, Denis and their families.”

And think of him as living In the hearts of those he touched, For nothing loved is ever lost And he was loved so much.

12TH, 28TH & 3RD ANNIVERSARY

No matter how life changes, No matter what we do, A special place within our hearts, Is always kept for you.

A special smile, a special face, A part of the family, We can never replace. Feelings are deep, our memories of you For the one we loved and loved so true Loving you always, your wife Patricia, sons Anthony and Herbert xxx

JESUS May your Sacred Heart Lord Jesus, be praised, glorified and honoured throughout the whole world now and forever. Repeat this 3 times. K.H.

No words I write can ever say How much I miss you every day As time goes by the loneliness grows How I miss you nobody knows.

Mom. I didn’t no that day would be our last or that I’d have to say goodbye to you so fast, I’m so numb, I can’t feel anymore praying you’d just walk back through that door. And tell me that I was only dreaming you’re not really gone as long as I believe..... You always made my troubles feel so small and you were always there to catch me when I’d fall in a world where heroes come and go, well God just took the only one I know. So I’ll hold you as close as I can longing for the day when I see your face again but until then.....

Garden Magic Debby Looney

PLANTING THE SEEDS When you think of spring, what comes to mind, asks Debby Looney

When you think of spring, what comes to mind, asks Debby Looney APART from longer days, spring makes me think in terms of snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells and, best of all, tulips. If you, like me, think in terms of flowers, then now is the time to get to work! September is when the bulb-planting season really starts, but you can still plant them well into October. Indeed, the later you leave tulips, the less chance there is of them getting the disease tulip fire. Most bulbs prefer well-drained, fertile soil, and tulips prefer a little lime added in our acidic conditions. A few general rules when planting bulbs: the top of the bulb is almost always the pointy end! Plant them 2-3 times as deep as they are tall, and about two widths apart. Add some Growmore or chicken pellets in the bottom of the planting hole, then cover with some compost before putting the bulb in place. Tulips in particular are not great at surviving in our soil, so if you have bulbs you want to keep, lift them when the foliage turns yellow and keep them in a dark well-ventilated place until the next autumn. Snakehead fritillaria for example, are deceptively delicate looking flowers, yet are very hardy, and naturalise quite happily. Their larger cousin, Fritillaria aurora imperialis, or Imperial Crown, is also hardy and very beautiful. It is one of the oldest bulbs cultivated. Alliums are also well worth planting. Beautiful spheres on slender stems come in whites, yellows and purples, ranging in size from a pingpong ball to a football! Anemone bland mix are also an easy to grow plant. They are lovely in a rockery or alpine setting, and if the soil is well drained they will come up year after year. I use new bulbs almost every year, and as a consequence I have patches of them all over the garden… tell-tale signs of where I have emptied pots! Camassia is also a very easy to grow bulb, multiplying quickly. Flower spikes in white and blue grow up to a metre tall, and they are ideal for use as cut flowers. Hyacinths and paperwhite daffodils are popular as indoor plants for Christmas. If you want to have a display, you will need to start forcing them by the end of this week. Put them into a dark, cool place and monitor them to ensure they do not dry out. When the shoots are about four inches long bring them out into the light. Do not place in strong sunlight or near a radiator! When the flower buds are well established you may put them where they are to be enjoyed! They also make great gifts! • Got a gardening question? Trip Of A Lifetime To Poland Killarney Community College transition year student Brian Kelleher reports on the school tour to Krakow SOME 57 of us students with our principal Mrs Stella Loughnane and some of our teachers embarked on a trip of a lifetime with memories that will last forever. All aboard our flight from Cork to Krakow. We began our trip with Schindler’s Factory which was a conversion into a museum focusing of World War 2 in general. We learnt about the Nazi occupation of Krakow and how the city’s history building and architecture was virtually untouched. Another highlight was the Krakow Salt Mines. We got into the mines by going down 54 flights of stairs. The mines were as old as the 16th century. Inside the mines was a church that in my opinion could have fit roughly four houses. This church was mined completely out of salt and took near 200 years to complete. On day three we rode the bus to Krakow where we began our walking city tour our guide began us in the Jewish district where we learnt that before the war there was 70,000 Jews

Support Groups

in Krakow and after 5,000 and today only 500. In the city tour we also saw the palace and Europe’s biggest market square. The architecture in the city was magnificent, with medieval and renaissance buildings. After the city tour we headed to Auschwitz and Birkenau. What I felt there will stay with me. We learnt about the atrocities committed there and they were plentiful. When we were leaving Birkenau I was the last one out and I would have just left but my lead teacher told me to wait a minute and take one last look. I will always remember that moment most of all the sun was going down and the past was laid out before us.

Tough Loss For Lakers In Local Derby For the second home game in a row, the Killarney side were unable to capitalise on a decent start against top class opposition, writes Adam Moynihan

National League (Division 1) Scotts Lakers 64 Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin 75 A dominant third-quarter display helped Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin overcome local rivals Scotts Lakers at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday night. The hosts started well but faded badly in the second half as Killorglin took control of the game at both ends of the court. The trio of Daniel Jokubaitis, Ivan Bogdanovic and Kevin Gray in particular came to the fore when it mattered most and the Lakers had no answer as they ultimately fell to their third defeat in a row. Another huge crowd packed into The Auracle

for this one and, with a good number of away supporters also in the mix, the atmosphere was electric. The game itself didn’t really burst into life until midway through the first quarter when American Antuan Bootle scored seven in a row for the Lakers to give them a 12-9 lead. Croatian Bogdanovic responded for Killorglin with an excellent threepoint play but nice baskets from Bootle and Cian Clernon meant that the home side led by two, 1614, at the end of the first period. The Lakers started the second quarter well. Point guard Mihail Kapitanov forced a turnover and broke away for the easy lay-up before Bootle nailed a hook shot to widen the gap to eight. Killorglin fought back well, however, and, with five minutes to go in the half, Gray made his first three to cut the deficit to two. Justin Tuason was doing his best to make his presence felt when he was on the floor and he chipped in with a neat finish and an assist for Mark

Greene. Killorglin were showing glimpses of what they were capable of and managed to get out in front as the half drew to a close but a three-pointer from Greene, who was the Laker’s stand-out player on the night, made it 34-34 with a minute to go. Ian McLoughlin again edged Killorglin ahead when he finished off a fast break but Kapitanov equalised for the Lakers with the last significant action of the half. Things were nip and tuck in the third until Ohio native Kevin Gray took the game by the scruff of the neck to swing the tie irreversibly in Killorglin’s favour. Gray hit a three to make it 43-40 with six minutes to go and a minute later, Bogdanovic extended the lead with a delightful play of his own. Gray then went lights out to drain 11 straight points for his team and effectively silence the home crowd. The Lakers only managed six points in the last six minutes and as a result found themselves trailing by 14 heading into the fourth.

It looked as though there might be a comeback on the cards when Bootle, Fitzgerald, Kapitanov and Greene all scored to make it a six-point game with five to play but Bogdanovic, Jokubaitis and Grey again came to the fore to steady the ship for Killorglin. In the end it was fairly comfortable for Ignas Sijanas’ side as they ran out 75-64 winners and maintained their 100% league record in the process. The result leaves them joint second with Ballincollig and Ulster University on 12 points. Cork giants Neptune currently lead the way with six wins out of six. The Lakers, meanwhile, find themselves midtable and will be hoping to get their season

back on track when they travel to Donegal to play Letterkenny IT on Saturday the 28th. Lakers top scorers: A Bootle (19), M Green (18) and A Fitzgerald (10). Killorglin top scorers: D Jokubaitis (26), K Gray (19) and I Bogdanovic (19).

THE big Kerry basketball derby between Scotts Lakers Killarney and Keanes Killorglin drew a record crowd to Killarney Sports Centre on Saturday night and it was the visitors who emerged victorious to maintain their unbeaten record at the top of the national league table. The Killarney venue was full to capacity long before tip-off with almost 1000 people in attendance. With Tralee Warriors also playing at home before another huge crowd, the message went out loud and clear to all other clubs that Kerry is the real hotbed in Irish basketball circles. Following a closely contested opening half, the Killorglin side stamped their authority in the third quarter with the outstanding three-point shooting of Kevin Gray a significant factor in the victory. Gray was well supported by talented European players Daniel Jokubaitis and Ivan Bogdanovic and Killorglin’s advantage to have three quality foreign players on court at all stages throughout the match was a luxury that Scotts Lakers just did not have. Exchanges were even from an early stage and a three-pointer from former Neptune Superleague player Ian McLoughlin helped Killorglin to a 7-4 lead after three minutes. However Killarney’s Antuan Bootle was making his presence felt at both ends of the court and a three-pointer from him gave Scotts Lakers a 12-9 lead left with three minutes left. Lakers enjoyed a very productive spell early in the second quarter racing into a 22-14 lead. Mark Greene was in outstanding form but Killorglin’s foreign trio of Gray, Jokubaitis and Bogdanovic kept their side well in contention to trail 26-24 midway through the quarter. Ten points from Mark Greene in this quarter alone and notable contributions from Mihail Kapitanov and Justin Tuason maintained the Lakers challenge and it was a tied ball game at 36 points each at the half-time interval. Not for the first time this season, it was in the third quarter where Scotts Lakers self-destruct button and capitulation kicked into force. Killorglin duly capitalised with American Kevin Gray emerging as a real hero sinking four huge three-pointers. Gray, who actually failed to make the score-sheet in the first and final quarters, ended up with 14 points in the third quarter alone, the actual difference between the teams at the end of this period when Keanes Killorglin led 60-46. The game looked effectively over at this stage but Scotts Lakers did manage a strong revival with Bootle, Greene, Kapitanov and Fitzgerald all hitting unanswered baskets as the home side cut the gap to trail 60-54 midway through the final quarter. However Killorglin responded well to the stop the Lakers comeback with the outstanding Jokubaitis leading the challenge. The talented Lithuanian hit 11 points in the final period to maintain a firm grip on Killorglin’s advantage to eventually secure victory. The winning margin was 11 points for Keanes Killorglin to leave them at the top of the table. Scotts Lakers, playing in their first season in the league after an absence of nearly a decade, will be anxious to get back to winning ways again after their recent losses. The Killarney side are free this weekend and are hopeful of strengthening the quality of the squad ahead of their next outing away to Letterkenny on October 28 before returning home again to Killarney Sports Centre on November 4 to welcome Galway Titans. SCOTTS LAKERS: Antuan Bootle 19, Mark Greene 18, Andrew Fitzgerald 10, Mihail Kapitanov 7, Padraig Lucey 6, Cian Clernon 2, Justin Tuason 2; Keanes Killorglin: Daniel Jokubaitis 26, Kevin Gray 19, Ivan Bogdanovic 19, Ian McLoughlin 7, Daragh Jones 2, Mark St Fort 2.

County Final: 6 Things To Watch Out For The Crokes will be favourites but not all signs point towards a one-sided final, writes Adam Moynihan

1. SELECTION HEADACHES FOR O’SHEA Although the majority of the Crokes starters are set in stone, there are definitely a few places up for grabs in Pat O’Shea’s County Final line-up. In both the quarter final and semi-final, the Crokes failed to line out as selected so realistically we won’t know the actual team until they take to the field on Sunday afternoon. Chris Brady was listed at full forward but didn’t feature in either of the last two games, while Kieran O’Leary was a late withdrawal from the West Kerry match due to injury. Shane Doolan was also left out despite being named at halfback as Luke Quinn, Michael Moloney and Tony Brosnan all played from the start. Jordan Kiely came off the bench and tucked away two tidy goals so he’s sure to be in the mix as well. All of these lads will be hoping that they’ve done enough over the past couple of weeks to earn a place in the starting fifteen. In truth, the Crokes have so much strength in depth at the moment they could choose any combination of the aforementioned players and still have too much for most teams in the county. 2. GOOCH IS STILL THE TOP DOG With all the controversy surrounding his testimonial, Colm Cooper’s expertlytaken goal in the semi-final was a timely reminder of his unique talent and what a great ambassador he has been for the GAA over the past 15 years or so. And it wasn’t just a nostalgia-inducing cameo either. Gooch is Crokes’ top scorer in this year’s Championship with 4-14 in four games. Around half of those points have come from frees but even if you only count scores from play, the Kerry legend has still outgunned the rest of his teammates: Colm Cooper: 4-14 (3-5 from play) Daithí Casey: 3-8 (2-5 from play) Kieran O’Leary: 3-4 (all from play) He was named Man of the Match against West Kerry (which may have been a bit generous to be fair) but the 34-yearold’s influence on this Crokes team can’t be underestimated. Expect him to play a big role again on Sunday. 3. MURPHY’S PERFECT RECORD Crokes keeper Shane Murphy has been in imperious form. He was pivotal throughout his debut season in 2016 and remarkably he is yet to concede a goal in this year’s Championship. Of course, a lot of that has been down

Tony Brosnan, Dr Crokes, battles for possession with Cian O’Murchu, West Kerry, in the Kerry Senior County Football championship semi-final. Pic: Eamonn Keogh

to the defenders in front of him but Murphy has been consistently excellent when called upon. His kick-outs against West Kerry were phenomenal, so much so that a few spectators in the crowd were wondering aloud if he should be awarded Man of the Match. In addition to his shot-stopping and distribution, Murphy is one of only three Crokes players (along with Cooper and Casey) to have scored in all four Championship games to date. He has kicked a 45 in each outing. 4. CAN BRYAN SHEEHAN DRAG HIS TEAM OVER THE LINE YET AGAIN? Not for the first time in his long and storied career, the St Mary’s talisman was hugely instrumental in South Kerry’s narrow victory over Rahilly’s in the semi-final two weeks ago. He kicked three crucial points from play and would have had a goal but for an incredible goal-line block by Danny O’Sullivan in the 45th minute. He might not be as deadly a free-taker as he once was but he still has the character and skill to carry his team through the

Recent form points to only one winner but a glance at the history books reveals one worrying statistic for the Crokes toughest of battles. Sheehan will need to be at his inspirational best if South Kerry are to pull off a shock upset. 5. HISTORY FAVOURS SOUTH KERRY Recent form points to only one winner on Sunday but a quick glance at the history books reveals one worrying statistic for the Crokes. The men from Lewis Road have only lost three of the nine finals they’ve reached since the year 2000, and all three defeats came at the hands of South Kerry. Eleven of the current panel were involved in the most recent of those

finals back in 2009. That particular loss was somewhat of a watershed moment as that group of players went on to win four in a row but there are certainly still a few ghosts to be laid to rest from a Crokes point of view. Victory for Crokes would bring them level with Austin Stacks and Laune Rangers as the most successful teams in the history of the County Championship (twelve titles). 6. WHAT DO THE BOOKIES THINK? South Kerry lifted the Bishop Moynihan Cup as recently as 2015 and have been far and away the second most successful team in Kerry over the past twenty years or so, yet Crokes are still overwhelming favourites to prevail on Sunday. Their price of 1/5 might seem a bit crazy for a County Final but Crokes have a proven track record of overpowering teams in big games. In fact, I would imagine there will be no shortage of punters backing them in the handicap (-5.0) at 11/10. As always, I suppose the best tip is to keep your money in your pocket.

Celtic Hammer Geeha As Blues Pay The Penalty Words: Adam Moynihan KILLARNEY CELTIC continued their impressive start to the campaign with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Mastergeeha in the first round of the Munster Junior Cup on Sunday. Celtic, who won the Kerry section of this tournament last year before losing out to Nenagh in the last 16, travelled to Kilbrean Park in great form and I suppose they would have been strong favourites against newlypromoted Geeha. Having said that, still had to go out and do it and goals from Peter McCarthy (two), Gary Keane (two) and Cathal O’Shea saw Eoghan Donnellan’s side safely through to the next round. It’s still very early days, of course, but it certainly seems as though Celtic mean business this season. On the other side of town, Killarney Athletic lost out on penalties to Fenit Samphires in the same competition. We haven’t had the best of starts so far and disappointing draws against

Listowel and Castleisland already have us playing catch-up in the league. The one positive to this point has been our victory over Doolan’s Cow in the quarter final of the Champions Trophy but we were unable to follow that up with another win last weekend. I would say that we were probably the better team for large spells but Fenit are a decent side and they took the lead through an own goal after 65 minutes. We rallied well and Shane Lynch equalised late on to force extra time. Neither side could find a winner so, after 110 minutes of football, the match went to penalties. Unfortunately for us, we only converted two of our four spot kicks and Fenit won 4-2 to book their place in the next round. Elsewhere, Tralee Dynamos defeated Tralee Celtic 1-0, the fantastically named Przemek Skrzypczak bagging the winner. The draw for the remainder of

the tournament has already been made. Dynamos will host Fenit, Cedar Galaxy will play the winners of Mitchel’s Avenue and Listowel, Classic FC will face Dingle and Celtic will take on Castleisland at home. The quarterfinals are fixed for the weekend of November 19. Should Celtic win, they’ll play the winners of Classic FC v Dingle in the semi-final. There’s more cup action scheduled for this weekend as the FAI Junior Cup 3rd round ties take place across the country. Last year’s semi-finalists Celtic are at home to Moher Celtic on Saturday evening (7pm), while Athletic face a difficult away fixture against Castleisland on Sunday morning (11.30am). Cedar Galaxy host Carrig Celtic later that day at 2pm. Celtic’s opponents currently find themselves eighth in the Clare Premier Division so the Killarney men will fancy their chances of advancing to the fourth round.

Peter McCarthy: The Celtic veteran scored twice against Mastergeeha

Cedar, meanwhile, will probably have their hands full against Carrig who operate in the top flight of Limerick’s Desmond League. The KDL outfit are going well at the moment, however, so they’ll be hoping to give a good account of themselves in this one. For Athletic, it’s another tough fixture but we’ll just have to dig in and hopefully get a result. We let a two-goal lead slip against the same opposition a few weeks ago. This is a good opportunity to make amends.

Liebherr 0-18, Tricel 2-11 LIEBHERR retained their status as Kerry’s best Inter-Firm team on Saturday evening last as they edged a thriller of a County Senior InterFirm Final against Tricel in Lewis Road in Killarney. Liebherr had much the better of the first half, and took a five-point lead into the break having taking a lead with the first play; halftime score, Liebherr 0-11, Tricel 0-6. A thrilling second half saw play flow from end to end as Tricel put the defending All Ireland Senior Champions to the sword, scoring

an unanswered 1-2 to tie the scores – corner forward Shane O’Sullivan finding the net for Tricel. Liebherr responded well and scored three unanswered points (2 frees). Points flowed back and forth to leave four points between the sides with five minutes to play, but Paudie Clifford finished off a fine team move to hit the net for Tricel’s second goal to leave the minimum between the sides heading for the latter stages. Tricel were unable to find the equalizer though, and Liebherr held on to take the County Senior Inter-Firm title back to Fossa; fulltime score, Liebherr 0-18, Tricel, 2-11.

Countdown To County Final Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald

THE Dr Crokes chairman Denis Coleman was very busy preparing for the big match when I spoke to him. “Yes, it is an extremely busy time for me factoring in the logistics of the preparation. Isn’t it great to be busy in October at the business end of reaching a county final? “Extra funding must be sought and we are so fortunate to have joint club sponsors Maurice Regan and Patrick O’Sullivan as well as the support of local businesses.” “As I speak to you, the ladies committee in the club are preparing a dinner for all the players. They provide a hot fresh dinner to all players and management on training nights and this is greatly appreciated by all. It proved vital in our preparations for the All Ireland club final and this good idea continues for the county final.” DAITHÍ CASEY Daithí Casey, captain of the Crokes, has five Kerry SFC medals and one in Cork with UCC. I put it to him that Crokes are strong favourites for the county final. “I must remind you that we have not beaten South Kerry in a county final. I have painful memories of 2006 when very late in the game Bryan Sheehan landed a massive long distance free over the bar to snatch the title from under our noses. That was cruel luck for us and then in 2009 Declan O’Sullivan scored the winning point near the end. They will be really up for the match on Sunday and will have no fears of meeting us as champions.” He pinpointed the great work done within the club’s juvenile coaching programme as the real secret of Croke successes at senior level. “Those Saturday morning sessions are the bedrock for success. There is great team spirit and we have so many talented players who bring different attributes to a winning team. It is easy to win when you are in winning mode.” He has played in all positions in attack and at midfield. And his favourite position? “Centre forward, full forward and midfield. I prefer to play in a central position as opposed to the wings or in the corner. That much said I am willing to play in any position that keeps Crokes winning.” His toughest opponent so far? “Fionn Fitzgerald. We grew up together and had the same coaches. He is a top-class defender and he knows only too well my style of play. I am also very impressed with Jonathan Lyne, one of the emerging young defenders. Peter Crowley is tough from the Kerry panel and Ross O’Callaghan also comes to mind.”

CAPTAIN “I feel very privileged leading Crokes in to the county final and the way I have approached captaincy is to concentrate on giving 100% in my own game. I won’t be the man in the middle of the players making inspirational speeches in the dressing room. There are several experienced players who will do that. Captaincy is a great honour for my family and for myself. I will be able to encourage some individual players particularly the young ones so that the team goes on to the pitch in a winning mood.”

JASON KIELY “I was a sub in last year’s win and came on to score a point. I have learned so much from the experienced full forward line of Colm Cooper and Kieran O’Leary. They are not very big men, but they are skilful and confident in front of goal. Pat O’Shea was a brilliant corner forward in his playing days and he has thought me so much. This trio have mastered the skills of forward play. The physical size of a natural corner forward doesn’t matter so long as you have mastered the skill and the confidence to score. They make scoring look so easy and I have picked up the confidence to shoot or pass off depending on which is the better option for the team. I was well coached as a juvenile by Pat O’Shea, Seamie Doc and Edmund O’Sullivan. My father (Aidan) was also a big influence in my development as a forward. He was unfortunate to lose two county finals. I have come on in several matches and very often you find that defenders are getting tired and they do not like to see a young fresh player coming on with intentions to score. “I find the finishing off of a movement the easiest part. You size up the options and depend on your natural instinct on how best to score. In the county semi-final I did get two late goals. For one of them Paul Clarke used his entire 6 foot 6 frame to win a ball in front of goal. He has great hands and all I had to do was to do a loop around giving him the hint to hold possession for a few vital seconds for me to get in to the best scoring position. Then he slipped a great ball to me and the rest was easy picking my spot. The shot is the part I find easiest. Opportunities present themselves and your instinct tells you how to move and where to move before you pull the trigger. I am delighted to be fully fit again after rehabbing all summer and look forward to a call from the bench on Sunday. Hopefully I will position myself well to stick the ball in the net.” PAYNO And his toughest opponent? “No doubt about that one for me is Payno. He is so tenacious and very hard to shake off. He would annoy the hell out of you with the defensive skills he has mastered over many years. He has been a great servant to Dr Crokes and I never remember him having a bad game.”

BOTTY Senior selector Niall O’Callaghan explained how the management drew up a plan of action to rest the county players in June. “That was the ideal opportunity to blood some of the younger players in the county league. After the demands of the All Ireland club campaign that break in intensity worked a dream,” he said. “All the players went back in to full training from July onwards including the Kerry players who lost out to Mayo. On average we have 32 players in training and that is at every training session. We need it all for Sunday. South Kerry is a strong team drawn from several clubs. They are particularly strong in defence and they usually opt to engage a sweeper, so that makes it harder for our forwards to break down and set up for scores. South Kerry have the winning sign over us in the past years, particularly in finals. It is going to be a tight game and discipline is going to be very important. We cannot afford to foul inside 50 metres from our goal with such a brilliant free taker as Bryan Sheehan ready to punish us. He was not as accurate as usual in the semi-final but he was carrying an injury. They were still able to call on Paul O’Donoghue and Ronan Hussey.” EAMONN’S VIEW I expect South Kerry to set up defensively and deprive the Croke sharp shooters of possession. I am very impressed by wingback Robert Wharton from Renard and he has great back-up in Mark Griffin and Fionán Clifford. Midfield is a real high fielder’s paradise. Big Brendan O’Sullivan from Valentia and Bryan Sheehan come up against Johnny Buckley and probably Alan O’Sullivan. Matthew O’Sullivan the towering full forward did not have his usual big game in the semi-final so he can cause a lot of disruption in front of Crokes goal where John Payne, Fionn Fitzgerald and Mike Moloney will have to be on top of their games. It will be a tough one for Crokes but they have the better scoring forwards and that should be enough to see them win, with the caveat not to foul for Sheehan or he will punish the defenders. IN BRIEF Two goals from Ian Roche paved the way for East Kerry to retain their Kerry MFC title defeating St Brendan’s 2-14 to 1-15. Three first-half goals from full forward Aidan Boyle set Ballyduff on the road to victory in the Kerry SHC replay at Tralee on Sunday last. Final score Ballyduff 4-13, Lixnaw 1-19. Clonmel Commercials qualified to meet Dr Crokes in the Munster Club SFC having defeated Killenaule 2-9 to 0-8 in the Tipperary county final The death took place of Brendan Keogh recently. He was a great sports follower. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam.

THE Killarney under-16 rugby team opened the new season with an impressive 47-0 victory over Abbeyfeale. The squad that lined out on the day were as follows: Matt McAuliffe, who was solid in the scrum and in the carry, Brendan O’Donoghue, who made some great line breaks, Odeniz Koyun, a powerhouse whose ball ripping was a joy to behold, Adam McSweeney, who showed incredible pace, Evan Mannix and John McCarthy, who controlled the lineouts and were strong in defence, Padraig Talbot, at number seven, who was instrumental in so many moves along with team captain, number eight, Craig McKenzie Vass who led the rampant pack. Peter Walsh tackled aggressively and kicked some wonderful conversions. Outhalf Dion O’Neill kept the backline on the front foot and provided some great ball to the centre partnership of Mark Sheahan and Jose Ferrero (MOTM) who used

their fast hands to release the ball. The wings were very busy with some great line breaks from Donnchadh Grealy and fingertip handling from Jack O’Connell. Full back Liam Randles used his pace to good use and held the last line of defence. Sam Casey when introduced was relentless in his tackling and Cian Murphy came on at full back and showed his quick mind and feet with some welltaken clearances. Tomas Clifford also appeared and was hungry to show his speed and took his try very well. Adam Cronin, Josh Campbell and James Kennelly also made their U16 debuts. The introduction of rolling subs for this season gives a great opportunity for all players to showcase what they are learning on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Try scorers on the day were Dion O’Neill, Peter Walsh, Adam McSweeney, John McCarthy, Liam Randles, Tomas Clifford, Craig McKenzie Vass and Ozdeniz Koyun.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy MUNSTER got their European Cup campaign underway in France last weekend as they took on Castres at the Stade Pierre Fabre in the South of France. Hoping to improve on the defeat to Leinster the previous week, Rassie made a few changes to the starting line up. Tyler won the battle for the number 10 shirt and JJ was dropped to the A team in a questionable decision as one would imagine that JJ would have much more to offer. Does this

mean that Tyler is now second Number 10 for the Irish team ahead of the November internationals? Only time will tell. Munster managed to earn two points at Castres, coming away with a 17 – 17 draw. In the end indiscipline cost Munster yet again and a dodgy decision by the referee in the dying moments actually saved Munster blushes as Robin Copeland should have seen red for slapping the ball out of the opposing scrum half’s hand. Conor Murray spent time in the sin bin and a dodgy pass by Chris Farrell got the home side off the mark. With Munster saving two certain tries, they certainly

rode their luck on the day. In the end Munster will rue their missed chances, however have to look forward to a big day in Thomond Park next weekend as they welcome French Giants Racing 92 in what will be an emotional game, a year on from the untimely death of Anthony Foley. This week, we remember the Killaloe man and the huge void left behind as we remember Rugby is but a game. It has been a very emotional year for Munster and the announcement of a new head coach last week ensures that the dream lives on. Let’s hope that Thomond will be a Red Fortress tomorrow. Come on Munster!

morning. U12 DIV 2: Killarney Athletic 3 Mastergeeha 4 In this local derby, the boys just shaded in this close game. Danny Coffey 2, Barry Collins and Adam Whitty got the goals. All played well. U14 NATIONAL CUP: Mastergeeha 1 Killarney Celtic 2. Mastergeeha were unlucky to exit the cup on Saturday in this local derby. The visitors started the better and went a goal up early on. However, the boys battled hard and got a deserved equalizer just before the break when Donagh Fahy finished well. In the second half both side created some chances before the visitors took the lead in the 50th minute. After this Mastergeeha pushed forward with Colin O’Leary and Darra O’Callaghan having good efforts saved. All played well. MASTERGEEHA 2 FENIT SAMPHIRES 1: The lads made it 2 wins out of 2 in the league and moved up to joint top following this tough battle against Fenit. An even 1st half-finished scoreless but the deadlock was broken by centre back Chris Moynihan 10 mins into the 2nd half when he swept home a Philip O’Leary corner. The lads doubled their lead with 10mins to go when Ian O’Connor bundled home following good work again by O’Leary and although Fenit scored in the final minutes the lads held on to claim the points and continue their good start to the season. Killarney Athletic A.F.C. Results: Munster Junior Cup 1st Round - Killarney Athletic 1-1 Fenit Samphires. Fenit won 4-3 on penalties after extra time. With Shane Lynch scoring the goal. Senior B Windmill United 7 Killarney Athletic B 3 goal-scorers Chris O’Meara x 2 and Francis Quirke. This was a tighter game than the score-line suggests. With the addition of 3 youths who performed very well. The future is looking brighter. Well done to Finbarr, David and Jason. Youths - Killarney Athletic 1 Ballyhar Dynamos 0. A good victory for Athletic in a hardfought battle against Ballyhar. In very blustery conditions it was hard for either team to get the upper hand. Both sides had chances in the first half but it remained 0-0 at half time. Athletic knew they would be under pressure in the second playing against the gale force wind. They worked hard and late in the game were awarded a free just inside their own half. The long ball in met the right boot of Harry Potts who sent it to the back of the net to break the deadlock. A great performance by all players and a valuable 3 points gained.

Sam Casey when introduced was relentless in his tackling and Cian Murphy came on at full back and showed his quick mind and feet with some well taken clearances. Tomas Clifford also appeared and was hungry to show his speed and took his try very well. Adan Cronin, Josh Campbell and James Kennelly also made their u16 debuts. The introduction of rolling subs for this season gives a great opportunity for all players to showcase what they are learning on Tues and Thurs nights. Try scorers on the day were Dion O Neill, Peter Walsh, Adam McSweeney, John McCarthy, Liam Randles, Tomas Clifford, Craig McKensie Vass, and Ozdeniz Koyun.

U16 BOYS: Minus the service of some regulars the U16 boys acquitted themselves very well against Rathmore in the East Kerry Championship. In a tight game played in Direen scores were hard earned and it was only the final moments that Rathmore hit the front with 2 points in as many minutes. With the score at 0-4 to 0-3 at halftime it was still level at 0-6 apiece with 5 minutes to go before Rathmore got the all-important scores. Next up now is a date with Gneeveguilla this weekend with the winners facing Rathmore in the final. A very competitive championship with 3 of the top 6 teams in the county all still involved, whoever wins out with certainly earn their corn. SATURDAY MORNING ACADEMY: Our troops had a busy weekend just gone when they travelled to Connolly Park to play a series of games on Sunday morning with Austin Stacks. The final was an excellent game of football played in ideal condition in Kilcummin. The win was a fitting finale for the season for the Kilcummin girls who showed great commitment to training throughout the year. Well done girls. Hard luck to Glenflesk SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Our seniors face Kerins O’Rahillys in Austin Stack Park on Sunday next at 1pm to determine if we will be playing senior club football in 2018. This is a curtain raiser for the county final and our players would welcome a large support for this huge occasion. Sean O Leary capped a marvelous year adding this medal to his All Ireland and Hogan cup awards, Paul O’Shea despite being under 16 turned in a powerful performance and Tomas O’Connor was a valuable member of the panel.
