“Dan was a gentleman, very helpful and great company” | By Michelle Crean There’s a deep sense of shock and sadness at the sudden death of Kilcummin man Dan Healy who died suddenly whilst cycling the Tralee-Killarney road in Rockfield early on Monday morning.

67-year-old Dan, of Rockfield and late of Dooneen, Kilcummin, Killarney, was involved in an accident at approximately 8.20am. Emergency services rushed to the scene and the road was closed off for a number of hours to facilitate the services of Forensic Collision Investigators.

Life after the current Coronavirus pandemic will be very different for tourism - particularly pubs - according to two well-known Killarney bar owners.

Pubs were the first to be asked to close as the country strived to contain the spread of the virus, but it looks likely to be the last type of business to be allowed to re-open.

Publicans say they agree with the current measures to protect the health of the country’s citizens, but their thoughts are already turning to measures they will need to take once they are given the green light to reopen.

Patrick O’Sullivan, who runs the Tatler Jack on Plunkett St, is calling for a Government-led aid package to stimulate growth in the sector.

“There has to be a package and it needs to come from the Government and be thrashed out with the Vintners Federation,” he said. “There will have to be a lot of thought put into it."

He also says any delay in reopening pubs will only further postpone the tourist season as he feels Killarney’s nightlife is equally part the tourist package as the scenery and other attractions.

In his early days Dan was a footballer with the club and was part of the 1973 O'Donoghue Cup winning panel.

The former ESB worker was a familiar face on the Tralee-Killarney Road as he cycled to and from town every morning and evening.

“There’s a sadness in Kilcummin for people that had known him,” Michael O’Riordan, PRO with Kilcummin GAA, told

“Can I open the restaurant and service it from the bar?” she asked. “How will we manage social distancing in a bar? Some people outside will decide themselves if a place is too busy and won’t enter, and the days being wedged into an Irish pub could change, people won’t be comfortable to be elbow-to-elbow in a bar.”

Kate also raised concerns about potential claims against owners of a public building if a cure cannot be found for COVID-19 and if someone takes legal action after they, potentially, catch the virus in such a building.

“We live in a very litigious society, we are at risk of being open to claims,” she added. the Killarney Advertiser.

“Dan was a gentleman, very helpful and great company. Anybody that would meet him regularly would enjoy his company. He was a great character.”

He added that those who formed the guard of honour wanted to pay tribute to him as restrictions meant that they couldn’t attend his Funeral Mass.

“We had a presence close to the graveyard. Needless to say, we maintained social distancing. About 40 from the club turned out, along with his neighbours and friends.”

Killarney Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and for any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, who were travelling in the area at the time to make it available to Gardai on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

They will operate a number of checkpoints across the county and will target known visitor spots as well as additional checkpoints on secondary routes and in towns and villages.

The operation will run until the end of the May Bank Holiday weekend on Monday night, May 4.

“Places are closed, beaches are closed, there is no point in travelling,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “People may consider accessing the county to visit holiday homes and the like, but they are not welcome.”

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Kerry Cllr Niall Kelleher, said that the long weekend must not be an excuse to change behaviour and he reiterated the appeal of the public health authorities for everyone to stay the course.

“I am appealing to everyone in Kerry to stay at home this weekend and thereby show support for those on the frontline who are leading the response on the Coronavirus,” he said. “There are signs that the sacrifices we are all making are having an impact in the battle against this dreadful disease. It is hugely challenging for everyone to stay at home, to limit social contact and to stay away from our loved ones. But at this critical juncture, we must stay the course and not be tempted to relax our approach or change our behaviour.”

Closing county bounds would speed up reopening | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Councillor Donal Grady says Kerry should close its county borders to stop the spread of the Coronavirus in an effort to speed up reopening the county.

MEGA CYCLE: Josh Hewerdine from Ballytrasna, cycled for 36 hours over three days to raise funds for Kerry Cancer Support Group.

He is calling for such action after getting increasingly frustrated at the number of visitors to Kerry. He says his idea would help speed up the re-opening as soon as lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Each county should operate on its own timetable, with counties worst affected, like Dublin, re-opening last.

His calls come ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend. Before Easter, the veteran councillor was concerned at the number of Airbnbs still operating in the Killarney area, a practice he believes is still continuing despite repeated warnings that

people should only travel for essential business.

He praised the efforts of the Gardai, but feels tighter controls at on the county’s boundaries with Cork, Limerick and Clare via the Shannon ferry, would be a better way to use their resources.

“The guards should be at the county borders and anyone on a non-essential journey should be turned around at that point," he told the Killarney Advertiser.

"People are still coming in droves and Airbnbs are still open,” he said, adding that the same should apply when the HSE give directions towards reopening. “Reopening should not even be considered until we get the correct advice from the HSE. Dublin should be the very last county to reopen – each county should be able to decide its own timeframe – and if it was the other way around do you not think Dublin would telling us to stay closed?”

Killarney teen completes 36 hour cycle for charity Cooper's All-Ireland winning A keen young Killarney cyclist, who found he had extra time on his hands - completed a mega task by cycling for 36 hours over three days - to raise funds for a Kerry cancer charity. | By Michelle Crean Josh Hewerdine from Ballytrasna, who turns 16 on May 11, decided to put others before himself and took on the mammoth task last weekend.

As of yesterday (Thursday), Josh has raised €1,055 of his €2,000 target for Kerry Cancer Support Group, and is hoping for some more donations by leaving the page up for the next week or so.

“I got the idea as loads of people were doing it for charity online,” Josh, a member of Killarney Cycling Club, told the Killarney Advertiser.

“My grand-uncle, my dad’s uncle Graham, died a few weeks ago and he used the bus. He was dedicated to it and I

thought it’d be a nice way to help them.

I was trying to raise money as people are in difficult times. The bus helps loads of people to get them where they need to be.”

Josh, son of Lisa and Craig, began his long cycle on his stationary bike at home on Saturday and finished on Monday, only taking short breaks to eat and use the toilet.

He used a simulated cycle game called ‘Spike’ to pass the time and also watched Netflix.

“I was in a bit of pain in the end but now I feel unreal. It’s a massive achievement.”

boots raise €11,000 | By Sean Moriarty A pair of football boots worn by local legend Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper in an All-Ireland football final raised €11,000 in an online charity auction for a very ill young boy.

Baby Dan Donoher from County Laois, was only eight-months-old when he was diagnosed with a rare genetic neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. A ground-breaking treatment is available in the USA but costs $2.1 million for a once-off infusion.

Dan's parents Niall and Aisling Donoher, who are both former inter-county footballers with Laois, set up the ‘Do it for Dan’ GoFundMe campaign and called on

other national GAA stars to support the campaign.

Locally both Gooch and Kieran Donaghy supported the cause with the former Dr Crokes star offering the boots he wore during the 2006 All-Ireland final victory over Mayo for auction.

A mystery bidder in New York gave €11,000 for the boots and a signed Donaghy jersey.

"Delighted to say the items have been purchased for," Cooper tweeted. "The boots are off to New York. Also want to a say a huge thank you to some bidders who donated privately. Amazing generosity.”

Schools send out heartfelt message to confirmation pupils | By Michelle Crean Four local schools pooled their resources and created a heartfelt online message for their pupils who couldn’t make their confirmation this week.

Wednesday was supposed to be Confirmation Day in Agatha's Church, Glenflesk for the pupils of Raheen NS, Knockanes NS, Glenflesk NS and Barraduff NS. However, due to restrictions currently in place, it meant that the big day they had all looked forward to, had to be post-

poned.

To mark the occasion and to acknowledge the disappointment of the children, the four confirmation teachers organised a short video clip of themselves holding a candle showing that their pupils were in their thoughts.

Teachers, Caroline Kissane Raheen, Lucy O’Sullivan Knockanes NS, Paul Favier Glenflesk NS and Gearoid O’Sullivan from Barraduff NS, and Fr George Hayes, Parish Priest of Glenflesk, took part in the video which received over 4.1 thousand views within 24 hours.

“We got a lot of feedback to the schools

from parents and pupils saying it was a lovely gesture and they were very grateful for the sentiment,” teacher Gearoid O’Sullivan from Barraduff NS told the Killarney Advertiser.

"There is great comradery between the four schools and staffs in the parish. It has been widely shared within local community groups, GAA, Tidy Village Group etc., and it is being well received as a very uplifting idea and gesture in these challenging times. Everyone was so enthusiastic about taking part and we are delighted that it meant so much to our fantastic pupils."

Local beautician plans free treatments for frontline workers | By Michelle Crean

Killarney rent freeze welcomed Killarney is one of the latest towns in Ireland – and the first in Kerry – to be designated a Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ). | By Sean Moriarty RPZs are located in areas of the country where rents are highest and where households have the greatest difficulty finding affordable accommodation.

A new report by the Residential Tenancies Board reveals that Killarney is now one of the most expensive towns to rent property in the country. The average cost of rent in Killarney is €923. The report states that the national average outside the Greater Dublin Area stands €872 pre month while the Kerry average stands at €790.

Elected members of the Kerry County Council were informed of the initial de-

tails of the report at an online meeting on Wednesday, and further details are expected to be released in the coming days.

“This was warmly welcomed by the elected members of the Killarney Municipal District as it will provide security for renters,” Mayor Michael Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser.

“Rent cannot be increased by more than four percent in any given year and this will give certainty to people who are renters.”

RZPs court controversy, while designed to keep rents at an affordable level, the cap means landlords, potentially, have a ‘target’ to set rental prices in line with the cap.

Hairdressers and beauty therapists around Ireland – including one local business – are planning to join forces for a "massive day of thank you" to frontline healthcare workers.

The 'Frontline Give Back Day' will take place when the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and will see salons offer a day of free treatments to frontline healthcare workers.

The day is the idea of Tullamore, Co Offaly, business-owner Olivia Murray who put a call-out on Instagram for other businesses to join the initiative.

Businesses are encouraged to offer six treatments or six hours of personal care to frontline staff.

And one local beautician who answered the call is Jill O’Donoghue from Killarney Toning and Beauty Salon located in Fair Hill.

Jill says that although she’s currently closed to the public, she more than happy to give something back when she reopens.

“I have signed up for ‘Frontline Give Back Day Campaign’ whereby I will be offering free treatments to our amazing frontline angels in the hopefully not too distant future!,” Jill told the Killarney Advertiser this week.

“I will be opening my salon doors some Sunday to offer some much needed and deserved massage, beauty or body treatments absolutely free of charge.

Our amazing frontline staff are working tirelessly to keep us and our loved ones safe during these challenging times. We will never truly be able to thank them

She said it’s hard to know when to open as they'll have to wait and see what happens on May 5 first.

"When we do reopen we will put the health of our clients first and have stringent safety measures in place. We can’t wait to meet all our clients again.”

Seasonal workers short- changed

by COVID payment scheme Employers from several tourism-sector services are backing calls for COVID-19 welfare payments to be extended to seasonal workers for the duration of the current crisis. | By Sean Moriarty The tourism industry in Killarney is largely staffed by local seasonal workers who commit to the full season from March to October but who then sign-on for Jobseekers Allowance for the months that hotels and restaurants are either closed or operating at a reduced level.

The Government led COVID-19 weekly payment of €350 has been in place since the crisis started in mid-March, with any worker who was in employment up to and including February 29, in receipt of the weekly payment.

However, seasonal staff, who should be back in the workforce by now, continue

to get their Jobseeker Allowance which is capped at €203 a week.

Industry leaders believe this is unfair, saying seasonal staff who would have budgeted through the winter now find themselves short on income through no fault of their own. Up to 15,000 seasonal workers in the Kerry hospitality industry could be affected and this figure does not include ancillary services like bus drivers and seasonal employees of services like bicycle hire shops and even jarveys.

Local hotelier Bernadette Randles, who is the chair of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotel Federation and vice-chair of the national federation, has been lobbying Government officials in an effort to re-

verse the issue.

“It is simple, the Government staff need to look at the revenue records of these staff and see that they have been regular contributors to the State over the last few years,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “These are seasonal workers, who worked six days a week last year and now find themselves living on €203 or less a week. It is not right. As a federation, we can fight for the reduction in rates and other issues but this is more important, this is about our people.”

Ms Randles added she has been involved in high-level talks with senior Government officials to highlight the situation

to those who might be able to change it including local TD Brendan Griffin who is the Junior Minister for Tourism and Sport.

“The Kerry and Irish federation will continue to fight this, it is not going to go away, it is not right. This is about individuals – our people are most important.”

Others campaigning on behalf of seasonal workers include Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher.

Tatler Jack’s live lounge goes from strength to strength | By Sean Moriarty The 'Tatler Jack’s Lockdown Lounge Live' weekly music session is attracting thousands of viewers each weekend and will expand into a three-day format to coincide with the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Tatler Jack on Plunkett St has been hosting online live music sessions every weekend since pubs were closed as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

The idea was a joint initiative between bar manager David Looney and local musician Ray Kennedy.

Last weekend’s gigs, hosted by local musician Kieran Healy and Simon Hall, a UK-based musician that David met while on holiday in Portugal, reached 13,500 people all over the world.

This weekend’s line-up includes Listowel blues artist Fiachara Mac Iomhair, Beale’s country-rock performer Stefan Gleeson and founder Ray Kennedy who is a regular performer in the landmark town centre premises in more-normal times.

“It started off with around 4,000 viewers the first week but that has now grown to over 13,000 last weekend. Each of the performers would have their own fan base and they are tuning in too,” David told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are sharing it with quarantine music groups all over the world and that is helping it grow too.”

Looney and Brickley met while the latter was busking on the streets of Killarney and was invited to play a few gigs in The Tatler by the bar's manager.

Further performances in May include Jennifer Lyons (Cork); Seamus Harty (Tralee), Shane Kennedy (Firies) and the return of Simon Hall (Worcester), and Ray Kennedy (Roscommon/Killarney).

Annette O’Brien , who lives in Killarney, is asking ladies to donate just €10 for a live two hour tutorial – which takes place next Thursday - with all proceeds going to Pieta House.

“I choose Pieta House charity as unfortunately so many of us know someone who has passed away through suicide or else we have close friends who have lost someone dear to them,” Annette explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week.

“I do the Darkness Into Light walk every year and it was due to take place on May 9. I decided to do some fundraising as the walk has been postponed.”

She is planning to do a glam look for the tutorial.

“The best part about this is that I will be on hand to guide people along, they can follow my techniques and ask

questions throughout the tutorial. I will chat everything from skincare to brows to make-up. The best part about this is that if they can’t attend the tutorial on the night they’ll have access to it whenever they want and re-watch it again. It will be a fun event, nothing too serious.

It’s a chance to sip some wine, learn a new make-up technique and have a bit of time on your own.”

At present, Annette says that she is busy helping to organise dates for her brides as most of them have had to postpone their weddings to 2021.

“Hopefully towards the end of the year I will be back doing bridal make-up once the social distancing lifts. It’s a hard job to do as we work so close to the client.

I will be doing plenty more tutorials and offering one-on-one makeup lessons when things get back to normal. My make-up parties will be back in action again once the ban lifts.”

Hotel thank frontline staff with free meals | By Sean Moriarty Staff at the Tan Yard are saying thanks to frontline emergency workers by feeding them from free.

The restaurant, which is part of The Killarney Plaza Hotel and Spa in Kenmare Place, is open for takeaway meals from Friday to Sunday each weekend.

Manager Denis McCarthy wanted to do something to thank emergency frontline staff for their efforts during the current medical emergency.

Last weekend, meals from the restaurant’s popular menu were offered, free of charge to the members of Killarney Fire

and Rescue.

This weekend, local ambulance staff will be fed free of charge.

“We just wanted to say thanks for everything they are doing,” Denis told the Killarney Advertiser.

“I know some of the lads in the fire station. At least this way they can be sure of a hot fresh cooked meal while they are working over the weekend.

Staff at Killarney Fire Station were thankful for the kindness.

“They have been very good to us,” station officer Paudie Managan told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is nice, greatly appreciated, and was a treat for those working over the weekend.”

Chinese State has not been upfront about this pandemic I see where China is going on “an aggressive defence” to calls for Coronavirus compensation.

There is going to be a diplomatic push and a global push back, according to the New York Times. Well, they can push away, and pull too! The Chinese State and its officials have not been upfront about the pandemic.

They will be the only ones to gain economically out of it, while life as we knew it has come to an end for the rest of us.

COVID-19 is only the latest virus from China.

I have long stopped trying to buy things “Made in China”. The truth is the West handed over its liberty to a China that has been brutal to its own people and with a terrible human rights record. Tiananmen Square, anyone?

For the sake of profit margins, all manufacturing was relocated there. Even Google bows low and only Trump cried stop!

We have abased ourselves in this country too. Remember the visit in early September 2001 to Killarney of the Zhu Rongji, then Premier of the People's Republic of China? Everything was closed off to the public – Muckross House, the whole of Killarney.

More than one hundred of the Chinese delegation travelled to The Kingdom where the main group stayed at the Hotel Europe by one of Killarney's celebrated lakes, Lough Leane. The bill there was £17,746, including the cost of the banquet hosted by Mr Cowen.

Some Chinese officials and press stayed at the Killarney Park Hotel, where the bill was £9,265.

Almost £1,400 was spent on accommodating the Chinese staff who couldn't get a room in Farmleigh at the Four Seasons in Dublin.

The final tab picked up by the department included a bill from Bewleys for £385. Other incidentals the department took care of included more than £21,000 paid to Aer Lingus for the charter of an aircraft to take the premier and some of the party to Kerry and back to Dublin.

Animals seek human interaction Fungie is lonely for people – it is one of the stories of the year so far, because not only does it give a different perspective on this awful COVID crisis – but it throws light on the whole man v animals thing.

We are so used to the narrative that man interferes with animals, that we forget animals like humans and want their company. The Clydesdale horses down in Muckross are plainly down hearted and won’t stop gazing when you pass, I am told.

It is the same with Fungie. He misses us.

Jimmy Flannery, the Dingle boat man, spoke movingly about how much he misses his friend Fungie – a family member he has known since he was a young fishermen in the early 1980s.

COVID-19 restrictions mean that there is no leisure boating. Jimmy wants dispensation to visit Fungie, for himself and his friends. He should get this.

There is a story nearer to home too. The anglers on the Lakes of Killarney should be allowed fish, Danny Healy-Rae says.

One man cycling through the Park to go out alone in a boat cannot do that much harm, now can he?

It is worth remembering that this lock-

down is hit and miss anyway. Few walkers and cyclists are observing the 2km rule. If they were, the National Park would be empty and there would be no cars parked to go walking.

Woods and mountains around Muckross and the Demesne are host to cyclists and walkers from all over. But to be honest, I am in two minds about it all.

Sweden, which has had no lockdown but trusted people to be sensible, is recording the same death levels as us.

At least open the hardware and garden centres and outdoor cafes and let people fish in the lake.

REAPING THE REWARDS

We have reaped the rewards, haven’t we? Everything from electric heaters to jumpers is now manufactured in China. In turn, we got them hooked on dairy. Our fields are full of farting cows to satisfy the Chinese market which has become our second most important dairy market. An astonishing 1.5 million is the national dairy herd these days.

Drive up around North Kerry any day and take a look at the fields, if you don’t believe me, and see how shockingly “dense” with cows any one field is. Our water, our carbon emissions and not to mention the happiness of cows, are succumbing to China.

Think global but act local Is it time to get back to making shoes in Hilliard’s Factory, tights in Pretty Polly and face mask material in Moriarty’s?

Is it time the EU – which has given poor leadership in the crisis brought back jobs to Killarney and to Europe? Killarney has emerged as especially vulnerable in the crisis.

We are too dependent on tourism and dreadfully exposed, and if we are to come out of this we must start thinking outside tourism and in terms of digital hubs for remote work, and learning. I can’t see the industry return as it was.

Is there any reason we cannot set up remote academies in places like Muckross House, say for two hundred third level students attached to the universities?

That way we would get back to the original idea of a university of small numbers in mixed faculties all interacting - but saving the cost of accommodation and travel in cities.

There is a real demand now for local food and the old shop counter serving goods from behind it might make an appearance in the town centre. For a start, it is far more hygienic than self-service with everyone pawing packaging. At the very least this crisis has shown us how important it is to think global - but to act local.

There’s no bank holiday from COVID-19 – says frontline staff The bank holiday weekend isn’t a break from the hard work of dealing with COVID-19, front-line public sector workers in Kerry have warned.

Staff from the HSE, An Garda Síochána and Kerry County Council joined together this week for a photo demonstrating that they’re standing together – but still apart – in the county’s battle to keep COVID-19 at bay.

Doctors, nurses, mental health services staff, Gardaí and staff from Kerry County Council came together with one main message – asking the people of Kerry to keep up their trojan efforts.

“We’re working so hard to make sure that essential services keep running despite the impact of COVID-19,” Mary

O’Mahony, Areas Director of Nursing, Kerry Mental Health Services said.

“We’re asking the people of Kerry to support our efforts by continuing to stay at home where possible, and following all other guidelines. Sadly, the more we move around, the more risk we create.”

The frontline workers praised the people of Kerry for the way in which they have faced COVID-19 as a community, and asked them to continue to work together and support each other in these difficult times.

ease. I am appealing to people in Kerry to continue to stay home, particularly over the long weekend. There can be no room for complacency. The shortterm pain will be worth the long-term gain. Ideal time to carry out essential repair works | By Sean Moriarty

Reduced number of gorse fires in the region | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Fire and Rescue Service is reporting a reduction in the number of gorse fires it has attended in recent weeks.

The months of March and April is the traditional gorse burning season as farmers, sometimes illegally, try to burn off last winter’s foliage and allow for new spring growth.

In recent years these fires have burnt out of control, putting people and lives at risk as firefighters could spend days in the mountains trying to control blazes. Wildlife, especially nesting birds, are badly affected by the fires. carelessly discarded cigarette butts, especially in drier conditions.

The last major gorse fire in the area was at the end of March when two units of

Kenmare and one unit from Killarney fire stations spent hours tackling an illegal blaze.

However, since that date, Killarney officers are reporting a reduction – by at least a third – in the number of gorse fires they attended compared to the same period last year.

“It is down to a few things,” Station Officer Paudie Mangan told the Killarney Advertiser. “Kerry County Council ran a massive awareness campaign and that seems to be working. There are less people out and about too, and less people in the National Park so less discarded butts.”

He warned people not to become complacent despite the reduction in the number of gorse fires as every incident the fire service has to attend is preventing resources from attending other serious incidents in the area.

The current lack of traffic on the streets of Killarney is an ideal time to carry out essential road maintenance in the town, according to Cllr Donal Grady.

Grady was speaking after yet another water mains burst on Park Road earlier this week.

The Upper Park road area of Killarney has been the scene of countless burst water mains in recent years and already this year there have been several issues in the area.

Cllr Grady is calling for Kerry County

Council to do the work now while traffic is at an unprecedented low-level as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

Other works, like the repaving of Main Street, first mooted by Cllr Brendan Cronin at the March meeting of Killarney Municipal District, resurfacing of Muckross and a bigger project delayed over the now cancelled Kilcummin Water Scheme, could all be tackled in the coming weeks before traffic starts to return to normal levels.

“Now is the time to do it," he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I don’t care if Kerry County Council has to beg, steal or borrow the money.”

Kerry footballers in action in Fitzgerald Stadium in either the Munster or All-Ireland championships are unlikely to happen this year - Kerry GAA Chairman Tim Murphy said this week. | By Sean Moriarty The Kerry GAA county board are monitoring the national health situation but as each week passes there is less time available on the calendar to host a full summer season of intercounty action.

The Government announced recently that all major events involving more than five thousand people would not be permitted to run until September 1 at the earliest.

GAA officials in Croke Park have said that localised club championships would be first to get up and running once any restrictions are lifted.

That means time is running out for any meaningful intercounty championship and rather than run a championship-style season which includes the Super 8 format, this year’s provincial and All-Ireland series will run in the old-style knock-out format with the winner of each province going straight to an All-Ireland semi-final.

The Kerry V Cork Munster semi-final fixture, regardless of a date, is set in stone to be played in Pairc Ui Caoimhe in Cork City and with the Super 8s championship kicked to touch, the net result is Killarney will not host a major intercounty game this season.

“It [Super 8] will not happen,” Tim Murphy, Kerry GAA Chairman, told the Killarney Advertiser. “The first thing is club activity will be eased back once restrictions are lifted and this will allow some format of club activity. Once we are in a position that intercounty could resume, it would go to a straight knock-out. All of this depends on what the HSE tells us in relation to running events.”

There is some glimmer of hope but that depends on other results within the Munster series. Assuming Kerry beat Cork and either Limerick or Tipperary qualify for the Munster final, then that game would be played in Killarney. If Clare make it through, it would have to be played at a neutral venue and there is no precedence with sharing alternate venues with Wa-

terford. Regardless, none of these counties would bring a travelling army of fans like the number of Cork fans who would descend on the town at any time.

"The longer this goes on, the likelihood there won't be any games," added Murphy. "There is a possibility and some hope of a game but it all depends on how this evolves (in terms of other results) first and then there are possibilities."

The Super 8 championship format was introduced during the 2018 season and last year Kerry hosted Mayo in Fitzgerald Stadium. A glorious summer’s day, a stadium packed to capacity and a Kerry victory made it one of the most memorable occasions in the town.

Murphy said fans will have plenty to look forward to in 2021, the home and away arrangement with Cork will swing in Killarney’s favour next season and a good run in the Munster Championship will ensure at least one Super 8 fixture on home ground.

“The Mayo match last year, there wasn’t an occasion like it anywhere in the world,” he added. “It is devastating for our players and supporters and there will be financial implications too, but that is for Croke Park to manage. Things might improve in the next six or eight weeks but the only viable solution is that the Super 8 are, most likely, gone.”

Murphy added that all decisions regarding match fixtures and spectator numbers at each ground will only be taken after speaking to senior HSE officials.

Muckross House is looking for children’s art and stories Have you ever wondered what kind of house you might have grown up in if you were born one hundred years ago?

Muckross House Library is eager to investigate how children might have lived in Kerry a century ago. If you are aged 12 years or younger, they would really appreciate your help with their research.

If you are 7 years and younger, they are asking you to draw or paint a picture of the house you think you might have lived in long ago.

Perhaps you can get ideas from your mum, dad or grandparents. Books and photographs from Muckross Traditional Farms, may also give you some clues.

If you are between 8 and 12 years, they’d like you to write a short essay, 250 words max.

“We would like you to describe what you

Fun Formal Friday for frontline staff | By Michelle Crean It was a day to have some fun but also to help raise funds as one local school dressed up in formal gear on Friday last.

St Brigid’s Secondary School urged its students, teachers, parents and staff to get dressed up for ‘Formal Friday’ which was a nationwide initiative organised by Today FM to raise funds to support charities aiding frontline staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

St Brigid’s Secondary School embraced the project which encouraged people to wear ball gowns, tuxedos or their favourite fancy attire and dress up in solidarity for those put on their uniforms every day to help those most in need.

All participants donated to the fund which raised over €150,000 nationwide.

All money raised will go directly towards supporting those working on the COVID-19 frontline including St James’s Hospital Foundation, Cork University Hospital, Mercy Hospital Foundation, Temple Street and Crumlin Children’s Hospital and Feed The Heroes.

“We in St Brigid’s were delighted to be part of the success of the Formal Friday initiative,” teacher Peggy Dowling said.

“We applaud the frontline staff who are doing phenomenal work in these surreal times. The school community stood together but remained apart in support for the frontline staff.”

Film producers Zoom into Kerry From as far as New York, Los Angeles, London and Vancouver – top film makers are connecting with Kerry – as film producers share their knowledge with local students.

With colleges and universities closed across the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kerry College and their media students are using Zoom video technology to take part in online video classes with some of Hollywood’s biggest names in film and television production.

Organised by critically acclaimed and worldwide award winning Knockanure man Gerard Barrett, the Writer/Director/Producer whose credits include ‘Pilgrim Hill’, ‘Glassland’, the television series ‘Smalltown’ and the Netflix film ‘Brain on Fire’, offered to arrange and moderate the online classes for the students, who are under quarantine and studying from home.

Renowned Irish actor and comedian Pat Shortt is also taking part in the classes from his office in Limerick city, giving advice on all aspects of production to the students. Other participants include Jeffrey Stott, the Producer of ‘Seinfeld’, ‘When Harry Met Sally’, ‘Drive’ and ‘Whiplash’.

Why? The Nutrition coaches at Activate implemented a three step plan as soon as we decided to shut our facility down on March 15 to help clients avoid the downward spiral.

We didn’t want our clients to take steps backward with their nutrition and derail all the progress that they have made thus far.

1. Assess The first step that you need to do when falling back into bad habits is to recognise that you are doing it. If you would rate your diet a B before the Coronavirus pandemic and now you rate your diet a D, why is that?

We ask our clients a series of questions to help with this assessment.

Here are a few of them: What has stayed consistent over the past few weeks?

What has changed over the past few weeks?

What does success look like to you over the next four weeks and six months?

Recognising that you are doing it so that you can bounce back faster is key to getting back on track.

2. Plan Once you have recognised that you have fallen back into bad habits, you need to create a plan.

What are you going to do differently to get back on track? Instead of trying to change everything. Focus on just one thing at a time.

Unsure of where to start? Start with what worked well in the past.

An essential piece of this plan is accountability. Find an accountability partner or hire a nutrition coach. Knowing that there is someone to check in with you will help you stay on track.

3. Act To avoid going back to old habits, you must actively implement new ones.

Stop thinking about it and take action.

We recommend tracking progress. You might write down what you ate in your planner or log your workouts.

You can’t see what you don’t track.

Tracking your actions and staying consistent will help you see results.

Now is the time to turn this obstacle into an opportunity to take control of your health and stay healthy. Don’t let the chaos around you derail you from your progress.

Cocooned 90-year-old leads danceathon for charity A milestone birthday should never go unmarked but Kathleen Lynch will have to improvise this year as she turns 90-years-old in lockdown.

Today (Friday), the Louth woman had been planning a one-woman 90-minute dance party in her back garden to celebrate the momentous occasion and raise funds for charity - but she’s since called on the rest of Ireland to join her.

At 3.09pm, the exact time that Kathleen was born, she’s asking that the people of Ireland dance for one minute to help celebrate her birthday and raise much-needed funds for the Irish Red Cross and Age Action.

Kathleen herself will be dancing on the hour, every hour, from 12pm. Her husband, 94-year-old Donnie, hopes to join her for a waltz during that time.

The Irish Red Cross and Age Action set up a Hardship Fund in March to help vulnerable older people who were experiencing added financial stress due to the COVID-19 crisis.

However, the huge number of applications means that the fund was oversubscribed, so Kathleen’s fundraising efforts are especially welcome and will ensure that as many people as possible can benefit.

Children’s art initiative seeks to honour Ireland’s everyday heroes A novel new art initiative ‘Draw Our Heroes’, launched this week, is asking budding young artists across the country to immortalise the everyday heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic by submitting their original portraits to a national competition.

Rose of Tralee Festival postponed until August 2021 For the first time in its 61 year history the Rose of Tralee International Festival has been postponed.

Anthony O'Gara, Executive Chair of the Festival, this morning said that it is the right decision given the ongoing health crisis.

“Over the past few weeks, our team have been considering how best we could safely deliver some, or all, of our 2020 Festival events,” he said.

“Taking into account Government guidelines, the safety of our communities and the ability to deliver a wonderful Festival; we have decided to postpone our 2020 Festival until August 2021.

“This is the first time in our 61-year history that the Festival has been postponed, but it is the right decision as we all play our part right now in keeping each other safe and well.”

The Rose of Tralee International Festival operates on a yearlong basis, in Irish communities worldwide; and will continue to harness the goodwill of its extended Rose Family in supporting communities and charitable efforts over the next 12 months, he added.

“Similarly, we will each have a role to play in restoring our community and local economy following this pandemic, and we look forward to coming together in celebration, showcasing Tralee and Kerry once more in August 2021.

“In the meantime, we salute the leadership and the selfless efforts of front-

line and support staff everywhere; and among them the efforts by many of our Roses, Rose Escorts and wider Rose Family, including our 2019 Rose of Tralee, Dr Sinéad Flanagan. Our immediate priority is to support the health and civic authorities in doing whatever we can to keep each other safe and well, and ultimately to protect lives.”

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council extended best wishes to the Rose of Tralee International Festival following their announcement this morning. Cllr Niall Kelleher said that the decision was disappointing but understandable.

"Kerry County Council is a long-standing sponsor and supporter of the Rose of Tralee International Festival and the event is a centrepiece of the Irish summer. This decision must have been a difficult one for the organisers and will be a disappointment to the people of Tralee in particular. But I am sure that public health was the primary consideration for everyone and that the decision is in the best interests of everyone in the community. The Rose of Tralee Festival will return in 2021 and Kerry County Council looks forward to again giving its support to this wonderful international event," Cllr Kelleher, said.

The Cathaoirleach acknowledged that many other festivals and events in Kerry would be cancelled over the summer and said that Kerry County Council would work with festival organisers to help them to resume their activities at the earliest opportunity.

The competition aims to recognise and celebrate the many different professions and people who are bravely working to bring Ireland safely through the pandemic.

“Heroes come in many forms and this competition will be a way to connect children directly with that concept and to draw on children’s creative flair to acknowledge the incredible stance being taken by an extraordinary range of our citizens operating every day in the face of great adversity,” competition

originator, Richard Mulcahy, said.

The drawings will initially be placed online, and a public exhibition is planned for later in the year as a permanent tribute to the heroic efforts of thousands of our citizens throughout the pandemic.

A prize pool of just under €5,000 will be awarded to the top 12 entries across four age categories. Their hero subjects will also receive a matched prize. The competition is open to any person up to and including 18 years of age.

Celebrated artist Graham Knuttel and RTE broadcaster Joe Duffy will lead the panel of judges for this exciting competition.

Entries should be original, unaided, and must be submitted by June 30.

President Michael Higgins marks International Workers' Memorial Day President Higgins marked International Workers’ Memorial Day with a ceremony on Tuesday, remembering all workers who died through exposure to the COVID-19 virus.

The President laid a wreath for all those

who died in the pandemic, at the ‘Plough and the Stars’ memorial in the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of workers who are at the forefront of efforts to contain the pandemic and care for those most affected.

It is very important to remember just how cold it can get at night, and how fragile seedlings are when they are just appearing. Remember to cover your young plants, and also geraniums if you have them already, with horticultural fleece at night. If you forget to take it off during the day, don’t worry, it will do no harm. In fact, it can stop seedling scorching in the sun too.

Cloches are also a great way of protecting young plants, these can be made of rigid clear plastic, or you can create them out of wire hoops covered with clear polythene or fleece. Another use of the fleece later is against carrot root fly. For carrots, sufficient light gets through the fleece, but the flies cannot get through.

As May approaches, all vegetable seeds can be sown outdoors. Lettuce, beans, peas, cabbages – there are too many choices! It is important, when planting veg, that you use a rotation system. The reason for this is to prevent disease becoming a problem. Use a different bed for different families of veg each year.

So, you will ideally have four beds, one for legumes; peas, beans, broad beans, one for brassicas; any on the cabbage family including kohl rabi, sprouts and broccoli, one for onions and root veg, and one for potatoes. Rotate it so the brassicas are planted after the legumes, as legumes set nitrogen in the soil, which will benefit your leafy greens. Keep in mind also that all members of the brassica family like to have their feet in firm soil. To prevent club root, add some lime if your soil is very acidic.

Salad plants, such as lettuce, rocket and

lamb’s lettuce can be planted anywhere you have a bit of space – they don’t tend to be in the rotation system as they are fairly pest free.

Ideally, if you are starting off a vegetable garden, beds should be raised for your own convenience, and about one metre wide so you can reach in easily.

You want to avoid compacting the soil too much by standing on it. Also bear in mind that peas and beans can grow to six or more feet high!

Vintage clubs hopeful Ring of Kerry Run can still go ahead Organisers of the annual Ring of Kerry vintage run say they are determined that the event will run this year – in some form – despite the current restrictions.

The 41st running of the county’s biggest classic and vintage car event was scheduled to run next weekend, May 9 and 10.

The Kingdom Veteran Vintage and Classic Car Club (KVVCCC) have taken the decision to postpone the event until mid-summer.

This year’s run was due to start from the Gleneagle Hotel and overnight at the Kenmare Bay Hotel, and those plans remain in place.

The Ring of Kerry Run has taken place each year since it began in 1979 de-

spite other restrictions like the Foot and Mouth crisis of 2001.

The KVVCCC will operate within Government guidelines when it does get the go ahead to run the event and has not ruled out a scaled back version. Last year’s 40th anniversary run attracted well over one hundred cars.

“If we have to run a restricted event, say to 50 cars, we can do that,” club secretary, Garrett Foley, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We understand the situation is serious and we won’t do anything without following the Government’s advice.

We were able to run the event in 2001, the year of the Foot and Mouth, restrictions were lifted at the very last minute and we were able to hang on and cobble together an event.”

The credit union has made some changes in light of the current pandemic. It has amended its opening hours, increased hygiene and hand sanitation stations in all branches and closed the Park Road office in the interim.

“We know a number of our members are cocooning or self-isolating and we encourage them to make contact via telephone or email and avail of our current account service which allows them to access their credit union funds via a debit card. Older members and students can avail of fee concessions on their current accounts.”

Now is the time to explore financial supports for college The financial impact of the COVID-19 crisis on households has been profound and has increased the anxiety for many of you as students and your parents in relation to financing third level education in the next academic year.

While this is always a concern at this stage of the year, it is compounded this year by the lack of opportunity for you to work during the summer to save for college. For the coming months you will need to use your energy to keep yourself balanced and as focused as you can. Life will get busy for you as you approach going back to school and start your exams on July 29. It is a good idea at this stage to explore the financial supports available to you for college.

SUSI Grants – Applications are now open for new and returning applicants. Eligible students who are attending approved full-time third level education and in some cases students studying outside of the State can access grant funding. As a Leaving Cert student, you are deemed a “new” applicant and July 9 is the priority closing date for the 2020/2021 academic year. If you think you may be eligible for a SUSI grant it is important to submit your application sooner rather than later. The online application system will remain open until autumn/early winter but ap-

plicants who submit their applications on or before the priority dates will receive priority assessment. The priority date for renewals (students already in college) is June 12.

Grants are issued based on certain eligibility criteria and are means tested. To check eligibility use the Eligibility Reckoner on www.susi.ie. SUSI assesses applicants on the basis of household income in the previous calendar year (2019) but a “change of circumstances” clause allows for a sudden drop in income in the current year. Education Minister Joe McHugh has confirmed that applicants affected by COVID-19 can apply to be assessed under the change of circumstances provision.

As a new grant applicant you don’t need to have been offered or have accepted a place in college to apply. The application takes some time and requires submitting documentation so the sooner you and your parents start the process, the better.

It is expected that there will be a substantial increase in applicants this year, given the increased number of people whose income has been impacted by the economic consequences of COVID-19 therefore getting in your application ahead of the July 9 deadline makes sense.

Scholarships – Many scholarships exist across colleges and industry to support students financially. They are offered to students on the basis of academic excellence, sporting and creative excellence, volunteerism, socio-economic disadvantage among others. Industry based scholarships are generally offered for ability and competencies in specific areas such as STEM. While some scholarship deadlines have passed it is worthwhile looking up the scholarship section on the websites of the colleges you are applying for and ensure that you apply if you think you are eligible.

This week saw the launch of the Liebherr Engineering Scholarship Programme which provides a unique opportunity for Leaving Certificate students interested in a career in Engineering to attend a college of their choice, tuition fees fully paid, summer work experience, industrial placement and a graduate programme place. Some offer the option to defer the first couple of months of repayments. Your local credit union is a good starting point for advice.

All the expert advice we are getting from economists tells us that the economy will recover as it has done before, so while financial concerns are to the forefront of households at the moment, try to remember that things will improve over time. Research and apply early for any financial help that you may be eligible for and stay as focused as you can on preparing for the Leaving Cert itself.

Decision leaves us unprepared for the Leaving Cert With the announcement this week that there will be no official Junior Cert supervised exams this year for us, it will, without a doubt, leave us unprepared for the Leaving Cert.

It would be like Kerry playing an All-Ireland final without any training first.

I don't think I would be happy with another change of mind decision at this late stage in the year. At first, we were told that exams would take place on returning to school next term and hence didn't study as much as we should have over Easter break. If all schools were to turn around and say we have exams in three weeks' time, as is the most likely eventuality as of Wednesday evening, they would essentially be ignoring students' well-being and setting the ground work for lower results.

What will happen to our remaining assessment tasks has still not been divulged. Will our teachers correct only the ones we've done and we won't have to do the ones that remain to complete? As for me I've done my French, Business and

Irish but haven't done my Science or English assessment task. For those who don't know what an assessment task is, it is 10 percent of our grade in some subjects, so in that respect, it is very important.

It has also been announced that the Department of Education will issue a Certificate saying we completed the Junior Cycle; this is more than likely due to the 7 percent dropout rate post-Junior Certificate. Most schools, I hope, will also issue their own form of the JCPA with results they will give us either through assessments or predicted grades, but this is still not nearly enough to represent three years of hard work.

No-one in my school quite knows what is going to happen with the Junior Cert which is ridiculous considering weeks ago we were told exams were to go ahead in September. At one stage I didn't fully want exams in September, but now that my mind had accepted this, that is what I wanted and was geared up for. As of now it seems all the more likely we will have assessments of sorts in the coming weeks.

Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Blackrock Education Centre are running a national poetry competition aimed at Fifth and Sixth class primary school pupils in Ireland. It is an opportunity for students to get creative at home and learn more about fish.

New deadline for Youth Climate Justice Fund The deadline for applications for the new Youth Climate Justice Fund is May 15.

Last month, the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone, announced the fund to support youth-led action and innovation on Climate Justice at community, regional and national level.

MEATBALLS AND SPAGHETTI IN TOMATO SAUCE INGREDIENTS

METHOD

Meat balls

To make the meatballs:

• 500g lean mince

Gently fry off the onion and garlic, and allow to cool slightly before adding to the rest of the ingredients. Shape the mix into little golf ball size shapes by rolling between the palms of your hands.

• 1 egg • 1 onion diced • 1 clove of garlic, crushed or grated • 1 tablespoon of ketchup • Worcestershire sauce to taste •T hyme; fresh or dried (dried herbs have a stronger flavour so require less) • Salt to season You can cook off a small piece of mix in a pan to check the seasoning Tomato sauce

Place in an oven tray and pour the warm tomato sauce over and cover tray with tinfoil. Bake in oven for at least 20 minutes. Stir the juices into the sauce and serve with spaghetti. Side salads, garlic bread and grated cheese all make good accompaniments with it.

• 2 chicken stock pots or cubes

Heat everything in a small pan to allow the stock cubes to dissolve and set aside.

Killarney Advertiser GAA/COVID-19 Poll

Majority of local GAA fans would prefer matches behind closed doors to no matches at all

A poll carried out by the Killarney Advertiser this week has found that 55% of our readers would rather see the GAA staging senior intercounty matches behind closed doors than cancelling the 2020 championships entirely.

With mass gatherings of over 5,000 people prohibited until September at the earliest as the Irish government attempts to limit the spread of the coronavirus, supporters will not be permitted to attend any major football or hurling matches this summer – if any matches go ahead at all.

The GAA are currently weighing up their options with regards to this year’s championships, which were originally scheduled to begin in the coming weeks before tentatively being pushed back to July. It is believed that playing senior intercounty fixtures in empty stadia is on the table and reaction to that particular prospect has been mixed.

Some eminent GAA personalities, like Kerry and Dr Crokes legend Colm Cooper, have questioned the value of having matches without fans, while others have argued that it would be better than nothing at all.

The results of the Killarney Advertiser survey have confirmed that the local GAA community are also divided on this thorny issue.

Interestingly, over three-quarters of our readers believe that if GAA activity is allowed to resume in the near future, the club game should be prioritised over county. A whopping 76% of those polled feel as though club should come first and that smaller, local competitions should take precedence over the provincial and national championships.

For his part, GAA President John Horan has reiterated that club will be the first to get up and running once it is safe to do so as he dismissed “irresponsible” reports that intercounty panels would be permitted to start training again in the coming weeks.

"We're an amateur sport,” he told

RTÉ this week. “I know there's a lot of speculation that professional sports like rugby and soccer may come back here in Ireland and overseas, but that's probably in the sense that they've cocooned their players.

"Our amateur athletes, they go back to their families, they go back to their workplace. We can't put any of those people, or those people they come in contact with, at risk just for the sake of playing games. We won't be making any rushed decision on this.

"If and when we do return, the club scene will be our priority because 98% of our activity happens at club level.

"As we're looking at it at the moment, our return initially will be back to club activity before we engage in the intercounty playing."

Horan also revealed that competitions at club and intercounty level could now run into 2021, and that the GAA would be content to see that happen.

"We're open to that if that's a possibility," he said. "We'd just adjust the 2021 season. I think there's a hunger and an appetite out there among both players and spectators to see the games being played.”

OPTIMISM

The outlook in the coming months remains uncertain but despite the doom and gloom, many people are still optimistic that our national sports will return at some stage in 2020.

When asked in our survey, which was carried out online via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, 57% of our readers said they think that GAA matches will be played at some stage this year, with the remaining 43% fearing that we may have already seen our last bit of GAA action until 2021.

With club activity officially scheduled to resume on May 5, an official announcement from the GAA is expected in the coming days.

A new decade, same old Kerry. In Part 3 of our Golden Years series, Adam Moynihan dissects The Kingdom’s bruising triumph over Roscommon in the 1980 All-Ireland final.

It was an unlikely rivalry. The two counties were, after all, at opposite ends of the honours list. But make no mistake about it: the teams contesting the first All-Ireland football final of the eighties did not see eye to eye.

The enmity between the Kerry and Roscommon players of this period is said to have started back in 1978 when the Connacht champions hosted The Kingdom in the final of the U21 championship. For some reason, apparently through no provocation or bad behaviour by the players in question, the home supporters engaged in some unsavoury chanting that was targeted at Beale clubmates Ogie Moran and Bomber Liston.

Choruses of “Ogie is a moron” and “Bomber is a monkey” didn’t go down too well with the visitors, and it also probably didn’t help that Roscommon halted Kerry’s bid for four-in-a-row at U21 level the same day.

With conditions poor and perhaps a few old scores to settle, it should have been no surprise that the senior final of 1980 descended into a battle, although the spectacle was undoubtedly more unedifying than anyone could have anticipated. Writing for the Irish Press, Peadar O’Brien concluded that “the best thing about this match was the final whistle”.

He wasn’t far wrong, but, for Roscommon, things could have been profoundly different.

Páidí Ó Sé’s remarkable block on the line in the 61st minute prevented a certain goal and stands out in a game that was largely bereft of individual brilliance at the attacking end of the field. Roscommon would have taken the lead at a crucial juncture were it not for Ó Sé’s intervention and that could very well have spelled the end for Kerry’s three-in-a-row hopes. The following morning, Mick O’Dwyer congratulated his heroic half back on his save. “That was tírniúlacht,” Ó Sé replied. “Love of country.”

John ‘The Jigger’ O’Connor capitalised on some stellar work by Tony McManus to palm the ball past Charlie Nelligan in the Kerry goal and the underdogs were in dreamland. Point by Séamus Hayden and John O’Gara followed and with just 12 minutes played, Roscommon, who were hoping to bring Sam Maguire back west for the first time since 1944, led by five points to nil.

The champions, playing into the wind and missing influential full forward Eoin Liston (appendicitis), were in danger of falling apart.

The ever-dependable Mikey Sheehy settled things down with a free and captain Ger Power, who would be forced off at half-time due to a recurring hamstring injury, fired over a cracker moments later. Then came the sucker punch that knocked Roscommon back on their backsides.

With 20 minutes on the clock, Tommy Doyle found Pat Spillane who cut like a knife through the heart of the Roscommon defence before playing in Sheehy.

Kerry’s scorer-in-chief drew the goalkeeper and popped a handpass over his head. All of a sudden, the holders were level.

It was yet another goal from the hand that typified Kerry’s style of play during this era, a style that had no shortage of ardent critics the length and breadth of the country.

Just weeks earlier, Kerry had defeated Offaly by 4-15 to 4-10 in the All-Ireland semi-final and just one of their four goals came via the boot. Writing for the Irish Independent, Donal Carroll called it “an utter abuse of the handpassing rules”, which at the time allowed for various examples of striking motions that would

not have been allowed in the decades preceding or succeeding the Golden Years. Of course, scoring a goal directly from the hands has since been outlawed entirely.

For his part, Mick O’Dwyer knew that Kerry were very good at moving the ball through the hand and he had no intention whatsoever of bowing to public sentiment. In fact, O’Dwyer would instruct one of his forwards – usually Spillane – to throw (quite literally) a dodgy handpass in the opening minutes of a game to see how the referee responded. If the pass was allowed, that was that. Kerry would toss the ball around like the Harlem Globetrotters so long as it worked to their advantage. Which it invariably did.

Referring to the GAA’s decision to allow more leeway when it came to handpassing, O’Dwyer was heard to remark: “If they want basketball, we will give them basketball”.

“We will win everything for as long as we can and after a few more years, they can have it,” he is quoted as saying in Owen McCrohan’s brilliant book ‘Mick O’Dwyer: The Authorised Biography’. “It’s not our fault if we wreck the game. We are like Liverpool in soccer.”

Now, after Sheehy’s latest fisted effort against Roscommon, they were well on their way to “wrecking the game” further still.

FOULING

After Roscommon’s lightning quick start, the first half rather fizzled out and the sides went in level, 1-3 apiece, at the break. The match was being ruined by constant flaking and fouling on both sides, although to borrow from the parlance of baseball, Roscommon did seem to be alone in swinging for the fences.

Sheehy gave Kerry their first lead of the game in the 38th minute and Spillane fisted over soon after to make it a twopoint game. Charlie Nelligan denied

John O’Connor from close range with a superb reflex save and the Rossies subsequently missed two kickable frees. On another day, they could have entered the final quarter with a healthy lead.

As it was, points by Mícheál Finneran and O’Connor (free) levelled matters with 12 minutes to play but midfield powerhouse Jack O’Shea responded with a big score at the other end. Then came a hugely important incident.

With Nelligan stranded after rushing out and crashing into the onrushing Finneran, the ball broke kindly to half forward Aidan Dooley who looked certain to score. His marker, Páidí Ó Sé, had other ideas. Ó Sé dived at the boot of Dooley and somehow not only prevented the goal, but also held onto the ball. Dooley proceeded to effectively kick the prostrate Kerryman over the endline but, thankfully for Kerry, the danger had passed. Roscommon didn’t raise another flag for the remainder of the game.

A pair of Sheehy frees sealed a threepoint victory as Kerry claimed their first three-in-row since the forties.

In his acceptance speech, Ger Power thanked Roscommon for a “good, clean game”. It was a throwaway comment that any winning captain would make but, in this instance, it drew uproarious laughter from the thousands of Kerrymen and women huddled below the Hogan Stand. The match had been anything but clean – there had been 64 frees in total – and O’Dwyer made no secret of his disdain for Roscommon’s approach when he and his soldiers landed back in Killarney.

“Ways and means to dethrone the present Kerry side are being tried throughout the country,” Micko said, “and those who do not have the skill must resort to other tactics. This was tried yesterday and we came out on top, and, no doubt, we will do so again next year.”
