Couple dash to Ukraine to meet newborn son

But their ordeal is far from over as risk of war remains | By Sean Moriarty A Killorglin couple have this week experienced the most intense emotions - as they entered a potential warzone - to meet their baby son for the very first time. Yesterday (Thursday), parents Dermot and Dorothy Moynihan were awestruck and overcome with relief to finally meet their newborn son Luke - who was born by surrogacy in Ukraine this week. His parents travelled from Kerry to the city of Lviv on Wednesday despite the Irish Government warning against travel to the country that is on the brink of an invasion by the Russian Army. Yesterday the surrogate mother and baby Luke were discharged from the maternity hospital and Dermot and Dorothy are now caring for their baby in a Lviv hotel - but their ordeal is far from over. Lviv is about 100km east of the Polish border and a four hour drive from Krakow where they need to get to as soon as they can overcome the red-tape they face. The Moynihans needed to get an Irish passport for the baby and are awaiting the results of a DNA test to prove that Dermot is the father, before they can bring baby Luke home.

JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME: Dermot and Dorothy Moynihan travelled to Ukraine despite the immediate risk of war.

Tralee-born and Dublin-based solicitor Tracy Horan is handling the situation for the family. She was able to secure a passport for Luke. It was initially anticipated that the family would have to travel to the Irish Embassy in Kiev to get the paperwork and the situation there is quite volatile at the moment. Ukraine’s capital city lies about 300km from the Russian border – an area that is heavily occupied by Russian troops. “This is a victory – we won,” Ms Horan told the Killarney Advertiser.

“The DNA test is standard procedure, it could be back anytime between Sunday and next Wednesday. Once they have that they are free to leave Ukraine, get to Poland and get home as quick as possible.” The city of Kiev sits on the banks of the River Dnieper which allows direct access from Russia to the Black Sea and Asian shipping routes. If the war threat escalates Kiev will be one of the first cities in the country to come under attack adding to the risk for the Moynihans or the possibility of not being allowed into

Gardai target young drug dealers in dawn raid Seven properties in Killarney were raided by the Garda Drug Squad in the early hours of last Saturday morning. Quantities of cocaine and cannabis were discovered in four of the properties during the operation. One person was arrested and charged following the raid. The seven properties included some in the town centre and more on the outskirts of town. A garda dog, trained in the detection of drugs, was used in the search operation. The coordinated operation targeted the sale and supply of illegal drugs in Killarney. “Gardai will continue to target young people involved in the sale of controlled drugs in the town,” a Killarney Garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “Saturday’s raid is a clear statement of this intent.” the city at all. There were reports of military shelling in rural areas north of the city yesterday afternoon (Thursday) as the Killarney Advertiser closed for press. Without the passport for the baby they could not bring him home – and the Irish Government is advising all Irish citizens to leave the country. Instead they face an anxious few days as they await the DNA results and prepare for their journey home.

Skateboard Park rolling thanks to funding | By Sean Moriarty Skateboarders who have been campaigning for nearly 20 years for a dedicated park for the sport have welcomed funding this week to get the project off the ground. Kerry County Council was awarded €133,188 in funding for the Killarney Skateboard Park as part of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme for 2022. The local authority has already identified a site on the grounds of the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. “I remember attending a meeting in the

KDYS Killarney in 2003 when plans for the project were being discussed,” Sean Murphy, Chairperson of the Killarney Skatepark Committee, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Skateboarding and similar sports offer significant physical and mental health benefits. The addition of a skatepark will offer a healthy and safe outdoor amenity which the pandemic has shown is a really important outlet for young people.” Sean praised the efforts of local politicians, especially Cllr Donal Grady and TD Brendan Griffin for their support of the project. "Through countless hours of dedicated

and persistent work from Donal Grady and Brendan Griffin and other local TDs, the KDYS, Kerry County Council officials and members of the Killarney skate-

boarding community, the project is finally looking like it's going to proceed,” he added. For a breakdown on further funding for local clubs turn to page 14.

New bus is latest addition to St Francis Special School | By Sean Moriarty There was great excitement this week for pupils and staff who welcomed the addition of a brand new Ford Transit minibus.

SINGLE RELEASE: Junior Brother has this week released his brand new single 'No Country For Young Men'.

Housing crisis the inspiration behind new single Moving from the countryside to the big city has been the inspiration for a new single by a well established local artist. | By Michelle Crean Junior Brother, AKA Ronan Kealy from Kilcummin, this week released his brand new single 'No Country For Young Men' and is preparing for a UK tour in April followed by an Irish tour. "At the moment I'm preparing for my UK tour in April with my new band, before embarking on an Irish tour supporting my latest single, 'No Country For Young Men', which is out now and available on gold 7'' vinyl from my website," Ronan told the Killarney Advertiser. "I wrote the song soon after I moved from Kilcummin to Dublin, and it reflects the anxiety I felt regarding the housing crisis and other pressures tangible both there and across the country." And although the pandemic was "very tough", he said that he's "excited to present" his new material. "It [the pandemic] presented a whole set of roadblocks which among other things have slowed the making of my next album down a bit, but now that restrictions are lifting, everything seems to be getting back to normal and I'm really excited to present the material I've been working away on over the last while," he said.

"A positive of the lockdown was that it granted me a break in my fairly hectic schedule early in 2020, and as a result, I enjoyed a replenishing few months at home in Kilcummin - this time allowed me to reconnect with the landscape, and allowed the rural atmospheres around me to bleed more deeply into my new music." Ronan has been involved in music since around the age of eight. "I've been writing and recording my own stuff since I could play an instrument, so from about the age of eight I've been hacking away creating songs. I began gigging when I was about 12, in a band called Titus Groan with musicians from Killarney, in which we wrote and performed our own material. I started gigging on my own near the end of my time with the band, and started exclusively doing my own thing around the period after I finished secondary school. A few years later I moved to Dublin to fully give the music a proper go, and I've been based up here ever since." For more information on tour dates and to buy 'No Country For Young Men' on Ltd. Edition Gold Vinyl go to www.juniorbrother.com.

On Wednesday St Francis Special School took delivery of the new minibus, one of two that will be owned and operated by the school. There'll be even more trips out now for the pupils as the minibus will offer the school the freedom to organise their own days out rather than relying on the support of others who loaned the school buses as and when they were available. A second bus is expected to be delivered in the coming weeks and their purchases were made possible thanks to money donated by participants in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. “The generosity of the people of Kerry knows no bounds and that’s coming from a Cork man,” Principal Liam Twomey told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are delighted with our new bus – it is a culmination of many years of fundraising by a lot of people.” Liam is retiring from the Beaufort school at the end of the month. He has thanked the people of Kerry for their generosity after three of his projects were realised; the bus, the construction of a new bike shed and the purchase of specially adapted bicycles suitable for the children attending the school was completed earlier this year.

By the end of next week, a new playground will be officially opened to complete his three personal ambitions. Mr Twomey said the new buses will allow the school to broaden the educational needs of the school’s pupils. “We can now plan and organise our own day-trips without waiting for the availability of other buses,” he added. “A day on the beach, in the National Park or just the supermarket is all part of the overall educational package for the pupils. Our own buses means our own freedom.”

Iconic town takeaway set to change hands | BySean Moriarty A landmark food business on Plunkett St has been placed on the market as a going concern for €650k. Mike’s Takeaway, described by auctioneers Sherry-Fitzgerald Coughlan as “a Killarney icon”, is one of the town’s best known and loved late night restaurants. Frequented by locals and tourists, the traditional takeaway operates until 4am seven nights a week during the busy summer season. It is one of only three late night takeaways licenced in the town until this time – Den Joe’s and The Mayflower are the other two. New businesses are restricted by the Town Development Plan and must close by 12 midnight. The Buckley family are retiring after 40 years serving the people of Killarney. “Mike’s is a Killarney icon and even more

Move it this March to support a worthy cause

Completing 30 minutes of exercise each day will not only benefit your health but also a charity during the month of March. | By Michelle Crean The National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) has launched its latest fundraiser and is calling on all challengers who are interested in participating in their Move Into The Light event. Paul O’Connell, who is the NCBI Shop Manager on High Street, is appealing to locals to get involved. Participants can walk, run, cycle or swim - whatever exercise they want, with funds going to the charity which helps people with sight loss. The 30-day challenge offers the perfect opportunity to fundraise for NCBI to enable them to provide vital services and supports to the 55,000 people spread across Ireland who are living with sight loss, Paul explained. "It's great to see NCBI organising an event like Move Into The Light because anyone, anywhere can get involved," Paul told the Killarney Advertiser.

"It’s a great opportunity for members of our community here in Killarney to get out and about as the evenings get brighter, all the while raising money for a good cause. We encourage many participants in Killarney to pass our shop while they're out on their 30 minutes of exercise a day throughout March. If you do pass the shop, don’t hesitate to pop in - you might bag a bargain while you’re on your travels!" Every person who signs up will receive a free Move Into The Light t-shirt, along with a dedicated sponsorship pack. Those who wish to sign up can do so on NCBI’s website www.ncbi.ie/move-intothe-light/ or by email fundraising@ncbi. ie. Challenge progress pictures and more can be shared on social media through the hashtag #TeamMoveIntoTheLight or by joining our dedicated Move Into The Light Facebook Group.

The 22-year-old won gold in both the 60m and 200m races at the Athletic Association Ireland National Indoor Games in Dublin. Her run of 7.39 seconds for 60 metres ranks her third in Ireland, just behind the two national records of Rhasidat Adeleke and Molly Scott. “With the national seniors competition a little over a week away it will be another exciting event for Sarah," Athletics Kerry PRO Tessa Dennison told the Killarney Advertiser. "Other Killarney Valley athletes in attendance [in Dublin] were high jumpers, Jordan Lee and Ciara Kennelly, where both took silver in their events.” Leahy’s run in Dublin last week comes just two weeks after she took home three medals at the Intervarsity Indoor Championships in Athlone. Racing for the University of Limerick team she won gold in the women’s 4x200m relay, took silver in the 200m race and bronze in the 60m race.

Try your hand at CPR training | By Sean Moriarty Three Killarney cardiac charities have joined forces and plan to run a CPR training course next week. The Michael Linehan Heartsafe Group, Killarney First Responders and HeartBeat Killarney have come together to present a special night of instruction On Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on Tuesday next (February 22). “This is for and open to everyone. People need to know how to do CPR. If you do know CPR but would like a refresher this is also for you,” HeartBeat’s Billy O’Sullivan said.

The training courses will take place in the community room beside the Church of the Resurrection on Park Road. The first session starts at 8pm. Participants will learn all aspects of CPR including that you don’t need to be a specialist to perform CPR, how to tell if someone is in cardiac arrest, and how not to panic and to be prepared in such situations. Meanwhile, the Killarney HeartBeat Strutters group held its first outing with cardiac exercise specialist Kevin Murphy on Thursday last (February 10). A group of approximately 70 people gathered for the walk.

€200k reallocated to Finnegan's Cross Kerry County Council is to benefit to the tune of €29,564,872 in funding for local roads in the county. | By Sean Moriarty The funding was announced on Tuesday by Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan and Minster for State Hildegard Naughton. The biggest allocation of funding in the Killarney Municipal District is the €200,000 earmarked for Finnegan's Cross, Kilcummin. The junction has been the scene of several serious, some fatal, accidents in recent years and had already been included in the 2021 Safety Improvement Works on Regional and Local Roads funding scheme. The latest round of funding is the re-allocation of last year’s money which could not be used for various reasons. Mayor Marie Moloney lives very close to the junction. She has been a longtime campaigner for safety upgrades at the junction. She explained to the Killarney Advertiser why the funding had to be delayed for a year. “I very much welcome the announcement of funding for Regional and Local Roads. In particular I very much welcome the reallocation of funding to carry out realignment and safety works at Finnegan's Cross, Kilcummin. This funding was allocated last year but due to time constraints, negotiations with landholders and the roads design department, this work could not be carried out in time to use the money in the last allocations, but assurance was given that the money would be reallocated this year. I have worked closely with the Area Engineers to progress this work and I am hopeful that work

can commence shortly to ensure the safety of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians at this location,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. Other funding announced this week includes a total of €23,500 for two different projects in Dunloe, €110,000 for road side drainage in Ballyhar and Aghadoe. A total of €80,000 was allocated for the construction of a retaining wall adjacent to the Flesk River in Ballycasheen and €50,000 for Listry Bridge.

Road funding "does not reflect cost of materials" - TD | By Sean Moriarty The €29m allocated to Kerry roads has been cautiously welcomed by Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae. The overall figure announced by Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan is a 4% increase on last year’s total. "I wish to welcome the announcement by Minister Eamon Ryan and Minister of State Hildegard Naughton of €29,564,872 in regional and local roads funding for Kerry. This is vital funding to allow works to begin on a number of road improvement and safety schemes

in the county," Danny Healy-Rae told the Killarney Advertiser. However, some of that money has been re-allocated from last year’s pot and the 2020 allocation does not reflect the increased cost of construction materials and fuel. “While I do welcome the funding that has been approved this week, more funding is still needed to deal with the many roads that are not on this programme. While we are being told that this is an increase of 4% on last year’s funding, this won't be reflected as the cost of materials, fuel and manpower has doubled in the last 12 months.”

The €50,000 funding for Listry Bridge announced under the programme for 2022 for regional and local roads won’t even cover the cost of “employing a stop and go crew” according to Cllr Brendan Cronin. Cronin lives close to the accident black spot on the Killarney to Milltown road. He has been campaigning for “the 23 years I am in the Council” to have the bridge upgraded or replaced. The €50,000 announced for this year is on top of €30,000 allocated last year

but Mr Cronin said: “I would have to go and check to see if anything was actually done there in the last year”. A similar situation in North Kerry – the Dale Road – received €2,200,000 in the funding announcement and Cllr Cronin is calling for a similar amount of investment for the Mid-Kerry road. “In all honesty, getting a €50,000 allocation in today’s world is useless. It would not over the cost of a stop and go crew setting up there for a couple of days,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “This road is a main artery. The people of North Kerry deserve Dale Road improvements and that kind of investment is needed in Listry.”

€80k allocated to Flesk River bank retaining wall | By Sean Moriarty A total €80,000 has been allocated for the construction of retaining wall adjacent to the Flesk River, in Ballycasheen under a regional and local roads programme announced by the Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan on Tuesday. Last year Cllr Donal Grady led calls for the construction of a safety barrier that is urgently needed in the area. He raised concerns after a number of cars crashed into the Flesk River across the road from Bowler’s Garage. “It is badly wanted,” he told the Killarney Advertiser shortly after Tuesday's announcement. “The road is in danger of being swept away and there is no protection for cars – they can drive straight in there.” Mayor Marie Moloney added: "I also

welcome the funding for the erection of a retaining wall to alleviate flooding from the Flesk River which has caused so much hardship to residents and businesses in this area."

Funding is provided to assist voluntary and community organisations, national governing bodies (NGBs) of sport, local authorities and Education and Training Boards and schools to develop high quality, accessible, safe, well-designed, sustainable facilities in appropriate locations and to provide appropriate equipment to help maximise participation in sport and physical recreation. Priority funding is also made available to support the needs of disadvantaged areas and groups (such as people with disabilities) in the provision of sports facilities while enhancing and improving grounds and facilities nationwide.

WELCOME

“I’m delighted to welcome this funding which will provide vital funding for the development of local sports clubs and organisations across Kerry," Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley said. "Throughout the past two years our nation's sports men and women both on a

local and national stage lifted the spirit of the country when we need it the most. Whether that was our Olympians, rugby stars, or the heroic on field performances of our county and club teams, the return from Government investment in sport has never been tangible. On a local level this funding will also benefit participants of all levels and abilities ensuring that the health benefits associated with sports participation can be enjoyed by everyone in their local community.” Deputy Mayor of Kerry and Cathaoirleach of Kenmare Municipal District, Fianna Fáil’s Michael Cahill also welcomed the news. “These funds are utilised by local organisations and sports bodies to provide facilities in their localities that they see as vital and that they would otherwise find great difficulty in funding. There are state-ofthe-art sports-halls, walkways, playing fields etc in parishes throughout Ireland that have been funded through the Sports Capital Grant over many years."

HIQA report praises Beaufort care facility | By Michelle Crean An unannounced HIQA inspection has given a Beaufort facility, which provides residential care for 29 residents with moderate or severe intellectual disability, its best ever report. HIQA carried out an unannounced inspection of St Mary of the Angels in November with inspectors noting marked improvements in many areas since the last inspection only a year ago. Out of 17 regulations that were inspected and marked, 14 were Compliant, three Substantially Compliant, and for first time ever, there were no non-compliances recorded. In comparison, a previous inspection in

November 2020 had seven Compliant, two Substantially Compliant and three Not Compliant judgments. Improved ratings from 2020 to 2021 are in the following areas: Governance and Management: Not Compliant to Compliant, Notification of Incidents: Not Compliant to Compliant, Fire Precautions: Not Compliant to Compliant, General Welfare and Development: Substantially Compliant to Compliant. Three areas in the current report are Substantially Compliant and plans are in place to address remaining concerns: Premises, Protection against infection, Residents' rights. The major remedial item involves a significant amount of new furniture for all of the houses on the St Mary of the Angels campus, i.e. DC1 and DC2. This will be

largely funded by the Parents and Relatives Association from previous fundraising efforts, including participation in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in 2019. A substantial proportion (75%) of the furniture order has been delivered as of today. According to the report all residents that were met appeared happy and content. Private and communal spaces within houses had been upgraded and were clean, bright and homely. The inspectors found that the overall care and support for residents was properly resourced. A significant development from the previous inspection had been the resourcing of the service to have dedicated staff to support residents with meaningful activities of choice and greater social integration. Individual care plans and person cen-

tred planning were further enhanced to improve residents lived experience. The effectiveness of previous care plans were assessed and findings incorporated into current care plans. “HIQA plays an essential role in ensuring the appropriate standards of care are being upheld in residential settings throughout the country. Notwithstanding the ongoing challenges in service delivery within the intellectual disability sector, SJOG Community Services will seek at all times to meet the statutory standards of care. Last year our service recorded 92% compliance with the regulations nationally following 79 inspections conducted by HIQA across a range of our 94 designated centres," Saint John of God, who are the service provider in St Mary of the Angels, said in a statement.

Two Mile School experiences huge growth in five years A small school which faced certain closure five years ago is now thriving and hoping to add a third teacher this September. | By Michelle Crean Two Mile Community National School, a State, co-educational, multi-denominational school opened in August 2017 with just nine pupils. Currently there's 40 pupils with plans to increase to 53 this coming September which would see a new teacher added to the staff. Located on the site of the old Cahooreigh NS, a five minute drive from Killarney on the road between Madam’s Hill and Ballyhar, it is run under the patronage of Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB). The move to open the school came after the Bishop of Kerry agreed to transfer the patronage of the old Cahooreigh National School to the State-run ETB. It serves the local community as well as the wider Killarney area. Like all primary schools, Two Mile CNS

follows the Primary School Curriculum as laid down by the Department of Education, Principal Catherine Barry explained. "What distinguishes the school from other primary schools is the ethos or characteristic spirit which is underpinned by the core values of Excellence in Education, Care, Equality, Community and Respect," she told the Killarney Advertiser. Described as a happy welcoming place, children of all religions attend and learn

about diversity from each other under the new model of learning. In terms of the education provided, the pupils experience all subjects and strands of the curriculum as they would in any other primary school. However, in place of religious education, the children engage with the 'Goodness Me Goodness You' programme (GMGY); a multi-belief and values curriculum which enables children to encounter

identity education, values education, philosophy and multi-denominational religious education. GMGY contributes to the holistic development of the child and as such aims to enable every child to realise their potential as a unique individual. "We have Catholic children, some with no religion, Muslim, Hindu, and we teach about all religions. The children's experience is brought in to it. We try to find links between them and they learn from each other. We also do philosophy for children and Community National Schools are the only ones doing that. The programme underpins the ethos of the school. It's really interesting. It encourages them to look at things from other peoples' point of view and that has a knock on affect." Catherine is keen to add that Two Mile CNS is like any other primary school - the only difference is the ethos. "We'll facilitate any religion. Any group that wants to organise religion classes, we would facilitate that. We aim to provide the highest standards of teaching and learning, where children are guided to become lifelong learners," Catherine said. "Children experience a very caring, child-centred environment which respects diversity and equality. Society is more diverse now than ever and Two Mile CNS provides a multi-denominational option for parents of children in the Killarney area. It's the way forward."

HOLLYWOOD HOME: Tony McManus pictured with his wife Imogen and son Kai, whose home featured on RTÉ's Home of the Year on Tuesday night.

Stunning "Hollywood" style home makes RTÉ final | By Michelle Crean A couple who brought “Hollywood Hills to Kerry” were thrilled when their stunning new home made the final of an RTÉ show on Tuesday night. The house, which has a traditional exterior but a very modern and contemporary feel inside with a large open plan throughout includes an “American vibe with the carport and big garage”, a cinema room, a basketball area outside, and a gym in the garage, impressed the judges on Home of the Year. Judges, architect Hugh Wallace, award winning architect Amanda Bone, and

new judge, award winning interior designer Sara Cosgrove, who seek out creativity and clever design, loved it so much that they marked it 26 out of 30 beating two other competing homes in the first episode of the new series. Hugh said there was an “American vibe with the carport and big garage”. And given that the owners Tony McManus, his wife Imogen and their son Kai, moved from LA back to Kerry, he was spot on. Tony, originally from Ballyduff, emigrated to LA 20 years ago but “home was always where the heart is” and during a six month stay in Kerry to spend quality time with relatives, they decided to pack up their beach life to settle in Killarney.

And Tony is no stranger to town. His grandparents Dan and Josephine Foley, and mom Marie came from High Street and he himself was a boarder for five years in The Sem finishing school in the early ‘90s. “We’re back to where we wanted to be,” Tony told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “We moved in January 2019 for six months for my son to spend time with his grandparents. Then my son and wife came to me and said they didn’t want to go back. We were looking for a while to buy a house and my wife wanted to be near Killarney National Park.” The couple purchased a site on Ross Road and hired the services of Denis O’Sullivan of Crossmount Construction

who managed to bring their vision to life. The build began in November 2020 and was completed in December 2021 with a three month shut down due to the pandemic restrictions. “He was fantastic to work with,” Tony said. “It turned out better than we hoped. We had nothing but the best of experiences with contractors and talented tradespeople. Without them we wouldn’t have our beautiful home. We love it, we’re so fortunate.” The new series of Home of the Year airs on RTÉ One at 8.30pm on Tuesday nights for the next seven weeks, and will be available on-demand on RTÉ Player each week after broadcast.

Close shave nets €10,000 for Kerry Parents and Friends Two Currans men who were looking a lot different after a charity shave have this week presented a €10,340 cheque to charity. Luke Fitzgerald and Brian O’Shea raised the staggering amount by having their hair and beards shaved in aid of the Kerry Parents and Friends Association (KPFA). The Killarney-based special education charity has suffered, like all organisations, over the last two years and the two friends decided to do something to help. Last October they organised a hair and beard shave at Jamsie’s Pub in Currans. Earlier this week the pair presented a cheque for €10,340 to the Kerry Parents and Friends Association at its headquarters, at the Old Monastery on Port Road. “The big shave took place on October 2. There was an abundance of music, food and drink on the night and from all accounts, it was a showstopper,” Marie

The town in the park will leave all others green with envy as it prepares to illuminate in emerald shades for the upcoming St Patrick’s Day celebrations. A colourful and gala parade is being lined up for March 17 but that’s not where the fun will begin and end as the St Patrick’s Festival committee is planning a truly spectacular return of the national day celebrations. Plans are underway to turn many of the town’s iconic buildings a fabulous shade of green in the days leading up to and for the week after St Patrick’s Day and the spotlight will fall on Ross Castle, St Mary’s Cathedral, the Franciscan Friary, Killarney Courthouse, Killarney’s Methodist Church, St Mary’s Church of Ireland and the town’s feature statues and monuments. Many of the local shops, hotels and business premises will all join in the fun by lighting up their buildings and workplaces in the most amazing shades of green while, this year, private households are also planning to turn green as Killarney well and truly emerges from two years of lockdown. Festival Chairman, Paul Sherry, is encouraging everybody to play a part in celebrating the big occasion and he said businesses that don’t already own colour

Children will enjoy the Fun4All Kid's Easter Camp from April 11 to April 14 from 9.30am to 2pm. A second camp will run from April 19 to April 22.

The multi-activity camps will be run at both the Killarney Alley AC arena and at St Brendan's College Gymnasium. "We're excited to be holding our multi-activity camps over the Easter holidays!" The theme for this year’s parade is Earth/ An Chré and it will be a celebration of the planet we occupy, the ground that sustains us and the world we live in. “We are putting the call out to everybody to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in Killarney like we have never done before,” Paul Sherry said. “Let’s make sure that if there is life in outer space, they can see Killarney shining bright and green on planet Earth. “It is so amazing to be back and after having to endure so much yellow with COVID signs for the last two years, what a difference it will make to be able to embrace the green once again,” he added. The people of Killarney are being encouraged to light up their windows, doors, buildings or premises and post a photograph on social media using the hashtag #letsgogreenkillarney. There is a special competition to find the best greened building and the judges will be out night after night to monitor progress and to see the effort that is being made. Keeping the conversation of women's safety alive is important By Ellen McSweeney and Méabh O'Sullivan Darcy ‘Transition Year Journalism’

The recent devastating murder of Ashling Murphy in Offaly has opened Ireland's eyes to gender-based violence against women. The reason this tragedy has struck a chord with our nation is because women all over Ireland can relate to not feeling safe even in broad daylight and public areas. This fear is limiting their every day movements and hence their equal participation in society, as the National Women's Council of Ireland survey shows, 69% of women in Ireland say they sometimes avoid certain areas and situations for fear of assault, and 1 in 4 women say they have experienced harassment within the last 12 months. A staggering number of 244 women have been violently killed in Ireland between the years 1999-2022, this in-

cludes Ashling Murphy, who was fatally attacked while she was out for a run, and Sophie Toscan Du Plantier who was brutally murdered in 1996. Orla Benson, a past pupil from our school St Brigid's Killarney, was killed in Boston in 1991 when she was aged 22-years-old. The root of the problem is a widely debated topic, with people having differing views. We investigated the opinion of the people of Killarney and responses were varied. Many said it comes from the home, that it depends on how a boy is raised. Some thought it was due to a lack of education. Others said that some people are just evil and there will always be bad people no matter what.

However, it is a common theory that the problem of gender-based violence can be traced back to society's perception of masculinity. Gender-based violence is deeply rooted in discriminatory cultural beliefs and attitudes that perpetuate inequality and powerlessness. Toxic masculinity is a huge issue. It is a desire for superiority that challenges women’s basic human rights and can be linked to the prevalence of harassment and sexual assault.

HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Ending violence against women seems an impossible task, but there are still ways you can make a difference. • Listen to and believe women when they tell their story. • When a woman shares her story of harassment or violence, she is taking the first step to breaking the cycle of abuse • Take a stand by calling out inappropriate sexual comments, catcalls, and sexist jokes when you see it happening in public or the workplace. • Set a good example for the next generation. By starting these conversa-

tions early on, we can influence the way that future generations think of gender and respect. • Challenge gender roles and the traditional characteristics that are assigned to men and woman. • Point out stereotypes that children might encounter and encourage acceptance. • Discuss consent, autonomy and accountability with boys and girls alike from an early age. Despite how modern we believe the world is becoming, today's women still must deal with harassment and violence. Although the recent event of Ashling Murphy's death has brought up awareness of these issues, it is important to maintain this awareness and keep the conversation of women's safety alive. Gender based violence has become extremely normalised and is almost seen as part of being a woman today. We need to change the perception of masculinity and femininity by taking small steps to slowly make a difference and make the world a more equal and better place for future generations of women.

Significant increase looking for support and safety Domestic abuse charities have seen a significant increase in the numbers looking for support. Kerry’s only service ADAPT is based in Tralee but provides support for the county. Not only does it provide crisis accommodation but also outreach services and is one of 39 frontline service members of Safe Ireland across the country. According to Safe Ireland’s Tracking the Shadow Pandemic Report, over 2,000 women and over 500 children, on average, received support from a domestic violence service each month from March to December 2020. In that same time, over 57,000 helpline calls were answered nationally. Nearly 6,000 new women and 1,100 new children looked for support from a domestic violence service for the first time. Last year ADAPT Kerry also received a

staggering 1,583 telephone calls for support compared to 549 in 2019. In 2021 ADAPT also had 237 first time callers, 101 calls for information from family and friends, 332 calls asking for a space, 127 of those times there was no space available and there were 95 admissions to the refuge. “ADAPT aims to give women a life free of violence and abuse, whether it be physical, emotional or sexual,” Catherine Casey, General Manager with ADAPT, said. “We help these women and children with emergency accommodation, housing and support. It is important that violence against women is being talked about currently, although, it’s also important how it is being talked about, not to victim blame the women and know women’s violence is very common especially in the pandemic.”

Killarney people have their say We recently interviewed people in Killarney to get their opinions on violence against women and whether or not they believe that Killarney is a safe town for them.

MARGARET DONNELLAN

MARGARET McLELLAN

When asked about the topic of women’s safety, everyone agreed that it was very good the issue of women’s safety was being brought up in the media and being talked about currently. “It’s very important to educate people on the importance of women’s safety,” Eimear Finn said. “I think it’s great that it’s being talked about,” Valerie O’Callaghan added while Eileen and Kaitlin Murphy said that “there’s no harm in talking about it and being aware”. When asked whether or not they personally found Killarney a safe town, there was a mixed reaction. While some said they find the town a safe place, others found that Killarney was mostly safe, although, walking alone in certain areas or at night is something they wouldn’t feel safe doing. “Generally, I feel safe, although we would avoid walking alone in certain places,” Margaret and Cara Martin said. However, Miriam Murphy said she wouldn’t walk alone at night. “Yes, I feel safe, I do the same route every day,” Valerie O’Callaghan told us while Niamh McSweeney added “to a certain extent” she feels safe. “It’s an ongoing issue and problem in Killarney although it’s hidden,” Eashal Imran

explained. Triona McGaley said that she does “feel safe” but “not when it’s too quiet”. “I’m always thinking someone might be there, it’s always at the back of your mind.” When asked about safety, both Aifric Rice and Cailin Roe said it’s been on their minds more since the murder of Ashling Murphy. “We’d definitely be thinking about our safety since Ashling Murphy, but Killarney is quite safe.”

ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

We then asked about their opinions on what they think the root of the problem of violence against women is and how gender-based-violence affects women. The majority of people found it was lack of education on the topic and seeing domestic violence from home life and it being normalised from an early age. “It’s definitely a lack of education,” Mary and James Kilgariff said. “It’s the deeply rooted misogynist stream that runs deep in society,” Aifric and Cailin added. “Domestic violence” was the opinion of Edward and Julie Nevin who said that there needs to be more awareness on the issue, while Margaret Donnellan added that “a lot of it comes from the home”. “It’s part of being a woman now, we have to be careful,” Felicity Brown said. “Women should be able to wear whatever they want and go where they want without worry,” Margaret McLellan said.

New mural to celebrate diversity and creativity | By Michelle Crean A new mural being created by local children manifests the ethos of their school in embracing and celebrating diversity and creativity.

Matthew Moynihan named London club’s Player of the Year

Former Spa GAA star Matthew Moynihan has been named as the 2020 Player of the Year by his adopted London club Tir Chonaill Gaels. The club’s awards night took place in Hendon, North London and was a combined celebration of the 2019 to 2021 seasons. He has been living in London, where he works as an accountant for an construction firm, since December 2017 and joined the Greenford-based club the following year. “It was a big surprise to hear my name called, there are a lot of good players in the club,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was very humbling – I was not expecting it all.” Moynihan is also playing for the Lon-

don team this season and picked up his award after he reached the final of the London County Senior Football Championship. London play Leitrim in the third round of the Division 4 National League in Carrick-on-Shannon on Sunday. The exiles are currently joint-third in the championship standings and could top the table after this weekend if they overcome Leitrim, depending on how the Cavan and Sligo games ends. “I think we will have a better idea of how the table looks after this weekend," he added.

Artist Tricia O'Connor, who has a BA in Fine Art and an MA in Social and Art Theory, has been working with a small group from the Third and Fourth multidisciplinary classes in St. Oliver's Primary School in The Department of Education BLAST Residency initiative. "I'm currently delighted to be working in St. Oliver's Primary School Killarney," she told the Killarney Advertiser. "The children, coordinating teacher of Intercultural Education and the BLAST project Terry Landers, class teachers Mairead Greene and Amy O'Shea, the SNA team Mags McCarthy, Mandy Lynch, Martina Dineen and I based our initial idea on this year's St Oliver's intercultural poster and poem," she said. "Together we explored the words of the poem by Charles Bennafield "I'm diversity, embrace me and we'll journey far, I'm diversity include me and we will reach the shining star". She added that they focused on creating stars through different mediums such as modelling clay, paper and cardboard. "We also jumped on trampolines outside

to explore different forms of movement that our bodies can make while looking at the colours of the sky, the shapes of the clouds and faraway stars. I then designed a mural using figures and a colour pallet chosen from our group explorations." The mural has been very much led by the children and each child is bringing their own creativity and talent to the project. "The mural will be finished by Easter and will take pride of place mounted in the school's inner courtyard. This is a special meeting place for all classes from preschool up to Sixth. It is a place where children play, staff meet, parents gather and graduations are celebrated."

CCTV cameras "needed to reduce crime" CCTV cameras should be installed at strategic locations on key roads entering and exiting the county to help reduce crime. That's according to Councillor Michael Cahill, who has requested that the Joint Policing Board and Kerry County Council investigate the feasibility of providing CCTV cameras to prevent and deter "roaming gangs" that are "robbing and breaking into homes and businesses". The Fianna Fáil Councillor said at a recent meeting of the Joint Policing Committee that he understands that there

are cost and GDPR constraints that have to be considered. “This should only be considered on a highly regulated and restricted access basis and best practices of existing operations should also be examined, but it could be a very useful tool in the fight against crime in the county.” Responding to Councillor Cahill, Chief Superintendent Foster said that "An Garda Síochána are extremely supportive of any initiative which will support our efforts to prevent and detect Criminal Offences in the county". However, Councillor Cahill said he re-

ceived a negative response to his proposal from Chief Superintendent Foster who stated that due to the cost factor and strict legal requirements around GDPR, it would not be suitable, stating that "taking account of the above factors, it is not considered that the proposal as set out would meet the requirements as set out by the Data Protection Commission in relation to the use of such CCTV technology". "Almost every Community Council Committee, Tidy Towns Committee and Chamber Alliance Committee has campaigned for CCTV cameras to be in-

stalled in the towns and villages of Kerry," Councillor Cahill said. "If we are serious about preventing crime and bringing criminals and drug dealers to justice, then this is the way to go. I have stated on many occasions in the past, that CCTV cameras should be installed at strategic locations on key roads entering and exiting our county. This is the only way that the roaming gangs that are robbing and breaking into homes and businesses across the county, can be monitored and brought to justice," he added.

Barraduff tractor and car run is back The Barraduff Tractor and Classic Car Run will make a return on March 6 after lockdown forced the cancellation of the 2021 event. This year will mark the third year of the run that raises money for the Kerry/Cork Health Link Bus and Recovery Haven Tralee. It is organised by Marie O’Sullivan, the secretary of the Barraduff Tidy Village Group. She is a breast cancer survivor. When she got the all clear in 2018 she wanted to do something to repay the efforts of both the charities who helped her recovery.

The idea of a Tractor and Classic Car Run was born on 2019. The last time it ran in 2020, over 150 tractors and 50 classic cars took part. The run is also open to vintage motorcycles. “I founded it, but I get a lot of help from the Barraduff Tidy Village Group,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. The run will leave Barraduff at 1pm and follow a route via Gattabawn, Gneeveguilla, John Gow’s Cross, Rathmore, Shrone, Doocarrraig, Kilquane and back to the village. Survey to bring better broadband to Rathmore | By Sean Moriarty Rathmore is one of the latest areas in the county to be surveyed by National Broadband Ireland (NBI)

CELEBRATION: Eric, Tina and Austin O'Brien were announced as the prestigious winner of the Lee Strand Overall Milk Quality Award 2021.

These survey works enable ‘Fibre-to-theHome’ network designs to be completed for each of the 27,168 plus premises in what are deemed Intervention Areas under the National Broadband Plan. Rathmore and Sneem are two localities in the county that are currently being surveyed by NBI engineers. These initial works pave the way for the next stage

of deploying fibre on poles/ducts and includes the erection of poles, unblocking of ducts, and the insertion of sub duct into existing ducts, for the fibre to be installed. “Under the National Broadband Plan, Kerry will see an investment of €107m in the new high speed fibre network. This will enable e-learning, remote monitoring of livestock or equipment, e-health initiatives, better energy efficiency in the home, and facilitate increased levels of remote working,” NBI Chief Executive, Peter Hendrick, said.

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea Author: Axie Oh

Deadly storms have ravaged Mina’s homeland for generations. Floods sweep away entire villages, while bloody wars are waged over the few remaining resources. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair. In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering. Many believe that Shim Cheong, the most beautiful girl in the village - and the beloved of Mina’s older brother Joon - may be the legendary true bride. But on the night Cheong is to be sacrificed, Joon follows Cheong out to sea, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence. To save her brother, Mina throws herself into the water in Cheong’s stead. Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical

beasts, Mina seeks out the Sea God, only to find him caught in an enchanted sleep. With the help of a mysterious young man named Shin - as well as a motley crew of demons, gods and spirits - Mina sets out to wake the Sea God and bring an end to the killer storms once and for all.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Kayleigh Cronin Kayleigh is available for advice and fitness consultations, at info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

How to help your child build strong bones! It’s easy for us adults, as well as children, to take our bones for granted. After all, they do all their work behind the scenes, but when a bone breaks, it’s a pretty big deal and bones take time to heal. The very same as building a house, before you do anything else you will need a very solid foundation. Having strong bones in childhood is the exact same thing, this lays a foundation for bone health throughout life. We build almost all our bone density when we’re children and teens. Childhood is the time when you lay the foundation stone of your mental, emotional and physical health. Children, however, are unaware of how to make a healthy start. This responsibility, thus, falls upon the parents. As a parent or guardian, you should ensure that your kids are receiving sufficient nutrients needed for their growth. Kids with strong bones have a better chance of avoiding bone weakness later in life. As a parent, you can help by making sure kids get the three key ingredients for healthy bones: calcium, Vitamin D, and exercise.

HIGH-CALCIUM FOODS

Calcium is a mineral that’s known for building healthy bones. Developing dietary habits that support bone health should start at an early age. Instilling healthy lifestyle habits in young children will go a long way in protecting them from osteoporosis in the future. Foods that are great for building strong bones include: milk, yoghurt, cottage cheese, mozzarella, tofu, orange juice, and salmon. Plants high in bone-protective antioxidants such as kale, broccoli, and parsley will also help create healthy bones during childhood.

VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENT

Vitamin D (sometimes labelled Vitamin

D3) helps the body absorb calcium. But most kids don’t eat many foods that contain Vitamin D. And because this vitamin is so important, health care providers recommend all kids take it if they don’t get enough in their diet.

ENCOURAGE KIDS TO EXERCISE

If you want strong bones, you have to use them. Bones grow in both size and strength during childhood, and one major contributor to bone development is exercise. Children should have at least 35 to 60 minutes of exercise each day. The bone mass gained through physical activity during childhood helps determine how healthy bones will be throughout their life. Weight bearing exercise is the best type of exercise for growing bones. Bone is living tissue, and weight bearing activity causes bones to build more cells and become strong. Bone constantly reforms due to everyday stress placed upon it, and physical activities work bones and muscles against gravity. Exercises for bone health: walking, running, jumping, landing, hiking, climbing, crawling, dancing, football, basketball, skateboarding, gymnastics, lifting weights, and skipping. Activate has a youth Strength and Conditioning programme which is run five days a week in different age groups: • ActivateKids (5-8-year-olds) – Runs on Mondays and Thursdays at 3.30pm • ActivateKids (9-12-year-olds) – Runs Tuesdays and Fridays at 3.30pm • ActivateYouth (13+) – Runs on Wednesdays at 3.30pm and Fridays at 5.30pm Kayleigh Cronin is a Professionally Certified Youth Coach with Brand X as well as holding a BSc in Athletic Therapy and Training and a MSc in Strength and Conditioning.

Social Welfare Payments and COVID-19 With all the changes over the last two years, it’s difficult to keep up to date on current entitlements. Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, briefly describes the main payments for people affected by COVID-19 for people of working age (between the ages of 18 and 66). For more in-depth information, or advice on your specific circumstances Deirdre advises you to telephone or email your local CIC where staff will be happy to help you.

IF YOU HAVE NO WORK, OR LESS WORK THAN BEFORE

Your employer may have closed their business and sent you home. Where this is temporary, this is called a temporary lay-off. If it is permanent, you may be made redundant.

EMPLOYMENT WAGE SUBSIDY SCHEME

Your employer may have continued to pay you under the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS). EWSS is administered by Revenue through your employer’s payroll. The EWSS will end for most businesses on 30 April 2022. For businesses directly impacted by the public health restrictions introduced in December 2021, the EWSS will end on 31 May 2022. If you were getting a Working Family Payment, this will continue while you are being paid under the EWSS.

COVID-19 PANDEMIC UNEMPLOYMENT PAYMENT

The COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) is for employees and self-employed people living in Ireland who lost their employment due to COVID-19. The PUP payment closed to new applicants from 22 January 2022. If you have lost your job, you can apply for Jobseeker’s Benefit (JB) or Jobseeker’s Allowance (JA) instead of PUP. JB is based on your PRSI contributions. JA is means tested. You apply for both payments at the same time (on the same application form) and the Department decides which one you qualify for. If the number of days you work has de-

creased, you may be entitled to Short Time Work Support. You must be unemployed for three days per week (excluding Sunday) to qualify for this. You can get this even if your employer is paying you through the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS). If your hours have been reduced but you continue to work for more than three days per week (for example, you have been asked to work five mornings per week), you may qualify for Supplementary Welfare Allowance. You can call your local CIC to discuss your exact circumstances and possible entitlements.

FAMILY PAYMENTS

If you are parenting alone you may be entitled to One-Parent Family Payment. The other parent of your child may have reduced the maintenance they pay to support your child. You should notify your local Intreo centre in this case. You can get an increase to your payment for up to 12 weeks. After this, your payment will be reassessed. You should also check if you qualify for Working Family Payment if you have dependent children and your hours or pay have been reduced. If you are pregnant and getting PUP or being paid through the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS), you can still apply for Maternity Benefit, Parent’s Benefit and Paternity Benefit. The time you spend on PUP or being paid through TWSS or EWSS is treated the same as a period of employment. If you are receiving PUP and have not returned to work before you are due to start your maternity leave, you should ask your GP to complete form MB3. _________________________________________________ For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www. citizensinformation.ie for further information.

GARDENMAGIC €75,000 available for various festivals and events this year Get ready to grow some rhubarb Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

In the vegetable garden this week I planted rhubarb. I know, one of the old staples which everyone can grow - except me! I have the worst luck when it comes to these plants, but have decided it probably comes down to my awful soil. Rhubarb prefers free draining soil, which retains moisture. This sounds paradoxical, but waterlogging is not good! Add plenty of compost or well rotted manure, as fertile soil is key. It needs space to grow, so one plant per square metre is sufficient. Watering during dry summer months is important, as is cutting out any flowers that appear. Rhubarb prefers a sunny, or partially shaded site. The best way to grow rhubarb is from crowns. These are divisions from a parent plant, and can be cut from a vigorous plant in autumn. Make sure there is at least one bud per offset, and I prefer to plant them in a pot until the following spring, so that I can keep an eye on them and ensure they root properly. Rhubarb can also be grown from seed – sow it thinly in May, outdoors in a prepared seedbed. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 20cm, then again to 40cm, before choosing the strongest plants to keep. The advantage of growing from seed is that you can get some different varieties, the disadvantage is that it will take a few years before you can harvest. Rhubarb will remain productive for

about a decade, but this is very dependant on the richness of the soil. It is a very hungry and thirsty plant so mulching in the summer/autumn is imperative – use manure, homemade compost or leaf mould. Liquid feed in the spring can also give them a boost. I find seaweed based liquid feeds best. When your plants are well established and strong, you can try forcing them in early spring. This just involves putting a bucket, or special terracotta rhubarb forcer, over the plant. This induces them to grow, due to lack of light they will produce tender, pale, sweet stems. To do this, a lot of energy is required from the plant, which is why it is best not to do it with a young plant. The only real problem you will encounter when growing rhubarb is ‘crown rot’ – which is a fungus which attacks the base of the stems, causing the crown to rot. I have had this problem repeatedly, and I suspect heavy soil and wet weather. I have now planted my new plants in a specially prepared bed which is sloped. Hopefully this will prevent water from sitting on the crowns in the future. I have also moved away from planting the most popular variety, ‘Timperley early’, and tried ‘Victoria’, a very old variety which has a good reputation for being strong! ‘Stockbridge Arrow’ is another good variety to try, especially in a smaller garden as it does not take up as much space. Finally, please remember the leaves are poisonous, but ideal for composting!

Kerry County Council is inviting applications from festivals in Kerry for funding which has been provided by Fáilte Ireland under the Festivals and Participative Events Fund for 2022. Funding of €75,000 is being provided to Kerry events for this year. Festivals are an integral part of what Kerry offers as a destination and afford an opportunity for local people to attract increased visitors and revenue into their communities, often outside of the traditional peak tourism season. They provide opportunities to showcase culture, people and places, and greatly enhance the visitor experience. The funding scheme will support festivals and events that will drive domestic tourism and help to improve the visitor experience. To be considered for funding under the programme, the following applies: Events must have a minimum expenditure of €10,000.

Festivals must generate a minimum of 500 visitor or tourist bed nights in paid accommodation. Other participative events must generate a minimum of 800 visitor or tourist bed nights in paid accommodation. The key objectives of the fund are to attract and develop domestic and international visitors in the shoulder season; to increase bed-nights and benefit the local economy; and to raise awareness of the region internationally. Eligible costs which may be funded include marketing activity, programming of events, and development activities such as training and feasibility studies. Application forms and the programme guidelines are available to download at www.kerrycoco.ie/tourism/ and queries can emailed to tourismoffice@kerrycoco.ie. Applications must be submitted by Tuesday, March 1, 2022. Further information is available from the Tourism Unit at 066 7183591.

The words "To commemorate the Platinum Jubbly of Queen Elizabeth II" were printed by mistake instead of what it meant to read "To commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II". Two weeks ago Queen Elizabeth II marked her 70th anniversary of the accession to the throne which took place on February 6 1952, making her the longest reigning British monarch ever. The United Kingdom will mark the occasion in style this coming June including a four day Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend from Thursday, June 2 to Sunday 5. With plenty of money to be made from souvenirs, a Chinese manufacturer made 10,800 items to mark the special occasion. However, the funny inscription is like Del Boy's favourite catchphrase "lovely jubbly"! Wholesale Clearance UK has picked up the collection. Andy White, from the company based in Dorset, said it was a "bit of fun". "I think the online trader rejected the items pretty much straightaway, but, in hindsight, with the exposure it's getting, they're probably wishing they didn't. Their loss will be someone else's gain."

British lorry driver saves man's life The quick action of a man driving a 44-tonne truck helped save a man's life on a British motorway. After spotting a motorist having a heart attack while driving on the M6toll, Kirk Mount (35), from Burnley, swiftly manoeuvred his truck to block traffic before racing to the man and administering CPR. Kirk, a father-of-two, was travelling on the southbound carriageway near Burntwood in Staffordshire when he noticed the man in distress. He had spotted a Range Rover stopped in

the middle lane and at first thought it had broken down. He managed to gesture to the motorist to move to the hard shoulder when it suddenly moved and then crashed into the central reservation and rolled backwards, before stopping. The former soldier then positioned his lorry across all three lanes to slow down oncoming traffic and proceeded to break the glass on the car to get access to the patient. Meanwhile a quick thinking medical professional who had a defibrillator

with him saw what was going on and by the time an ambulance arrived the man had a pulse. He's expected to make a full recovery. “It was a combined effort by several of us to save this man’s life," he added. "It’s really nice to hear he is recovering. It could have had such a different, tragic outcome. My first thought was to position my lorry to protect the driver and others approaching, to prevent anyone hitting his vehicle and causing further incidents. His car was in a very dangerous position."

Baptisms deemed invalid after priest’s simple error Thousands of baptisms performed for possibly decades have been deemed as invalid this week - after a priest used the wrong wording.

Former patients get behind fundraising cycle Three cyclists who were airlifted to hospital in separate incidents last year have appealed to people to get on their bikes and raise funds for the Irish Community Air Ambulance. The organisation has been chosen as one of the official beneficiaries for the 2022 Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Ireland’s only charity-funded Air Ambulance has set a fundraising target of €100,000 The 175km event returns on Saturday, July 2 this year starting and ending in Killarney. Registration opened on Monday, and is limited to 8,000 participants. Cyclists are invited to select one of six charities to represent on the cycle. Each helicopter mission costs an average of €3,500, all of which has to be raised or donated. Barry Cunningham, Diarmuid O'Donovan and Darren Lynch are among more than 500 people aided by the Community Air Ambulance last year. All three sustained serious injuries after coming off their bikes in North Cork, West Kerry and West Cork. They’re encouraging cyclists to register and take part in the Ring of Kerry on behalf of the organisation.

Barry from Dromahane was mountain biking on a forestry trail in North Cork when he fell off his bike. He broke his wrist and several ribs. “I was on my own at the top of this mountain, I couldn’t see houses, roads or anything. I was in a lot of pain and was finding it difficult to breathe. However, when I saw the helicopter approaching it was a fantastic feeling. There was a huge sense of relief when the chopper landed next to me and I knew that everything would be okay." This year will be his 10th year in a row participating in the Ring of Kerry. "The distance can seem daunting but the atmosphere plus a bit of training in advance will carry you through. I hope that as many cyclists as possible will choose to participate on behalf of the Irish Community Air Ambulance this July.” The Irish Community Air Ambulance was tasked to 512 missions in 14 counties during 2021, its busiest year since the service first launched in July 2019. The organisation relies entirely on fundraisers and donations, it expects that it will cost €2.1million to run the organisation in 2022. To register for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle visit www.ringofkerrycycle.ie.

Rev. Andres Arango, a Catholic priest in Arizona has resigned after it became known that he used one wrong word every single time he welcomed new members into the church since he entered the priesthood in 1995. During baptisms he used the phrase "we baptise you in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" when he instead should have said "I baptise". On its website, the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix said that it determined after

careful study that the Rev. Andres Arango had used the wrong wording in baptisms performed up until June 17, 2021. "It is not the community that baptizes a person and incorporates them into the Church of Christ; rather, it is Christ, and Christ alone, who presides at all sacraments; therefore, it is Christ who baptizes," the Diocese said. "If you were baptized using the wrong words, that means your baptism is invalid, and you are not baptized. What this means for you is, if your baptism was invalid and you've received other sacraments, you may need to repeat some or all of those sacraments after you are validly baptized as well."

Irish citizens advised to urgently to leave Ukraine Irish citizens in Ukraine are being urged to leave the country. There are growing concerns the stand-off between Russia and Ukraine could escalate into military conflict. A total of 114 Irish people have registered with the Embassy in Kyiv but more are expected to come forward as the crisis deepens. “While recent reports of a move towards de-escalation on the ground – if confirmed – are welcome, it is urgent that Russia de-escalate, abide by inter-

national law and engage constructively in dialogue,” Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney TD, said. “My Department’s advice in respect of Ukraine remains not to traveI. I encourage any Irish citizen in Ukraine who has not already done so to register with the Embassy. Citizens currently in the country should leave now using available commercial options.” Any citizen who requires emergency consular assistance can contact the Department of Foreign Affairs at 01 4082000.

Aqua Dome to reopen in time for St Patrick’s Day The Aqua Dome will reopen its doors on Tuesday, March 15 - almost two years to the day since it was forced to close due to the pandemic. Coinciding with the extended St Patrick’s Day Bank Holiday weekend, the reopening of the facility will bring a timely boost to the tourism industry in Tralee

and other parts of Kerry. The leisure pool, with its fantastic features such as the waves, slides, and rapids, are a big attraction for children and the Vitality Spa is a huge draw for the adults. “We are delighted to be reopening once again," CEO of the Aqua Dome, Kieran Ruttledge, said. "We are very aware of the importance

of the Aqua Dome as it brings so much business to Tralee. It’s widely known that many people visit the area primarily because of the Aqua Dome. We hope it will be business as normal for the years ahead and we look forward to welcoming our staff and regular customers back.” The Aqua Dome retained a core staff who have kept the place in excellent

condition but plans for a new major attraction at the site were shelved because the funds were needed to offset losses caused by the closure. Management remain mindful that the reopening of the Aqua Dome, which is powered by both gas and electricity, comes at a time when energy costs are on the rise and insurance premiums continue to be high.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Huge variety of courses available for school leavers and adults Try a blackhead bursting facial for glowing skin

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

There are over 200 colleges of Further Education (FE) nationwide which provide approximately 70,000 places on a huge variety of courses for school leavers and adults.

Looking after your skin is so important for confidence, hygiene, appearance - and the odd selfie! As with all our professional facials, they have to be tailored to suit the client's skin type and condition. A course of facials is always recommended, with maintenance facials thereafter and specific home care for your needs. The first step if you have never had one is to book a skin consultation, and the facial will be done on the same day. It's suitable for both men and women over the age of 18. At the moment the blackhead busting facials are the most popular. You start off by lying on a warm comfortable couch under a cosy blanket. A discussion about your skincare routine, water intake etc with your therapist is then completed. Then it's time for a skin scan under a magnifying lamp to highlight the main areas of concern. Dry patches, open pores, blocked pores, milia, congestion, oily, redness, bumps under the surface.... all the issues you have will show up during the scan. The outline of a facial would be; double cleanse, tone, exfoliate with an exfoliator that suits your skin type. I sometimes have to do two exfoliators but it really does depend on the skin that I'm

presented with. I always do the exfoliation under the steamer with ozone on. The steam will activate the sweat glands and this leads to healthier skin texture and tone because of improving blood flow. When you combine this with ozone, the steam opens the pores and ozone begins to penetrate the skin. Ozone has higher penetration levels than steam alone, and it can reach up to the lymph tissue and fat layer. The steam can be on from five to 15 minutes. We do the extraction when the skin is softened. Yes it may hurt a little, but the results are amazing. If the pores have been blocked this is a serious reason why your pores can look enlarged. It's very important to have them cleared out especially for men. The facial is finished with a double clay mask which tightens the pores and has an anti-ageing effect. Finally, the eye cream is applied, serum and appropriate day cream and SPF. We have a microdermabrasion facial which might suit if you like a machine based facial. We will recommend which facial will suit you the best, but if you have a preference, we can tailor it to suit your skin requirements. To book your skin consultation and facial call Jill on 064 6632966.

Closing date extended for Community Support Fund The closing date for submissions to the Community Support Fund 2022 has been extended by a week to allow as many community and voluntary organisations as possible to apply. The extended closing date will now be

Monday, February, 28. Application forms are available for completion online, through the following link: https://arcg.is/HKnqO. Queries can be made by email to the relevant Municipal District or the Community and Tourism Department of Kerry County Council on 066 7183680.

This year for the first time ever a link to these courses is available on the CAO website www.cao.ie/options so that applicants are made aware of the broad range of training and education options available outside of CAO courses. In recent years about one in four Leaving Cert candidates has opted to do a Post Leaving Cert course (PLC). These courses which result in QQI FET/FETAC awards are generally one or two years in duration and are accredited at Level 5 and 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications. It is possible to use these standalone qualifications to go directly into the work place after completing the course but there is an ever-increasing number of students using them to progress onto Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) annually by applying to CAO as a QQI FET/FETAC applicant. A quota of college places each year are reserved for QQI applicants in universities and institutes of technology (HEIs) which students can apply for on a competitive basis. This allows students to progress onto and complete undergraduate degrees at Level 7 and 8. In 2021, 13,125 applicants to CAO presented a QQI FET/FETAC qualification from Further Education colleges and centres. It is likely that many of these applicants did not secure their chosen CAO courses directly from Leaving Cert because of not having the required points or entry requirements. Taking the FE route is another chance to access places in third level and if you have completed the Leaving Cert Applied Programme (LCA) it allows you to progress into higher education which is not possible directly from LCA.

GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE FE COURSES

Missing out on your chosen CAO course because of points is not the only reason to apply for FE courses. If you are a school leaver who is unsure about what you want to do, a PLC offers the opportunity to try an area of interest out and gain work experience before jumping into a three or four year degree. It also prepares you very well for progressing onto studying that subject area in more detail giving you a great foundation for further study. Second level education has been impacted hugely during the pandemic so you may feel that you are not ready for the move onto university

or an institute of technology. FE colleges are similar in size to school so getting to grips with independent learning and living while developing confidence as well as key skills in communications, IT, referencing and research in that type of supportive environment makes the transition to third level easier. Figures show that the drop-out rates in higher education are lower among students who have completed a FE course first. Accommodation is also a huge problem for students so if you would like another year of living at home you will find lots of options within easy travelling distance.

APPLYING TO COLLEGES OF FURTHER EDUCATION

Applications are now open for autumn 2022 and entry is not based on Leaving Cert points. It is possible to apply throughout the summer, but it is advisable to apply early, as popular courses fill quickly. Begin by exploring the full list of options nationwide on www.fetchcourses.ie. You can also use the course search facility on www.careersportal.ie and www.qualifax.ie. For the latest information on the QQI FET/FETAC links to higher education courses and entry requirements for CAO courses if you plan to progress into HEIs, check out the relevant section of www.cao.ie. You can apply on www.fetchcourse.ie or on individual college websites, where you will find the entry requirements for each course. To explore options locally see www.kerrycollege.ie who are hosting an Open Week from March 22 to 24. Email openweek@kerrycollege.ie for more information and to book your place.

Car show raises over €20k for South Kerry man Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC) were amongst the many clubs that supported a fundraising motor show in Tralee on Sunday. The car show was organised by Kerry Motor Club to raise funds for Waterville man James Quinlan who is in a New York hospital after suffering a brain haemorrhage last year.

An estimated €20,000 was raised on the day to help the Quinlan family, who have extended relations in Killarney, to offset some of the medical bills they face. Around 250 cars lined the Brandon car park and at least 20 of them were supplied by the local vintage club while several members of the club volunteered as marshals on the day. “My father Michael and well-known car man Seanie O’Donoghue drove over a 1953 Ford Popular. It was bought new by my grandfather for £315,” KVCVC’s PRO Tom Leslie said. Tom explained how the car was so small that one of them had to sit in the back and the other in the front when they organised their own novel fundraiser on the day. “They had apple tarts with them, one of them in the front of the car and one of them in the back as it was too small for the two of them. They were selling slices of tart out the windows for €3 and all that money was donated.” Killarney and District Motor Club members showed off a range of rally cars on the day too. World Rally Championship star, Aghadoe’s Paul Nagle was one of the guests of the show and he displayed a Ford Escort Mk2.

Irish Car of the Year awards 2022 Several of the category winners in the Continental Tyres Irish Car of the Year Awards are available locally.

The overall winner of the prestigious 'Irish Car of Year' is the Kia EV6. McElligott’s Garage Tralee is the county’s Kia dealer.

The Irish Car of the Year Awards returned this year after a one-year hiatus. Motoring experts from across the country met in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Friday last to determine the award winners across a range of different categories. The Dacia Sandero was named as 'Compact Car of the Year' and can be seen at Donagh Hickey Motors in Rathmore. Local Opel dealers Ahern’s Garage are celebrating the news that the Mokka has been awarded the top award in the 'Small SUV' class. The Renault Arkana was named as the 'Medium SUV of the Year' and that car is also available from Donagh Hickey Motors. The 'Irish Performance Car of the Year' went to BMW’s M3/M4 and the local agents for the German brand is Ahern’s BMW in Castleisland.

VAN OF THE YEAR

The Citroën e-Dispatch/Opel Vivaro-e/ Peugeot e-Expert, an electrified joint collaboration of the three companies, has been voted 'Continental Tyres Irish Van of the Year for 2022'. Billy Naughton, Tralee is the local Citroen agent, Ahern’s Castleisland is the county’s Opel dealer and Reen’s Rathmore sell the Peugeot version of the van. “After missing out on a 2021 'Irish Car of the Year' awards programme, we are delighted to be back with these awards for 2022 as the whole programme provides a great guide to Irish motorists on what the best and latest cars coming onto the Irish market are. I am sure that the Kia EV6 will benefit hugely here from winning this much coveted award,” Tom Dennigan of Continental Tyres said.

AWARDS: A panel of motoring experts met in Dublin last week to decide the annual Irish Car of the Year awards.

What’s next for the property market? This weekend I spent much of my time scrolling through various property websites, virtually searching through houses both at home and abroad. Now don’t get me wrong, I do this quite a bit, but typically, I’m doing it out of curiosity more than intent. Generally my wife sends me a link to a house, I have a nose at the pictures, and then I carry on living my life, the end. This time it’s different. The fact that we might actually buy one of the homes behind the link this time around adds a whole new and altogether stressful layer to a previously beloved pastime. Like many, the idea of investing in property is something I have toyed with for a while. From a financial standpoint, I have never been overly drawn to the idea of real estate as an asset class. Despite our cultural obsession with homeownership, there are multiple downsides. Blasphemy, I know, but bear

with me. Mortgage fees, property taxes, insurance, maintenance costs, estate agent fees, lack of mobility, landlord duties to name just a few. All these seem to be conveniently forgotten when the back of the envelope property performance calc is being done. Since 1940, the median home value in the United States, adjusted for home size, has increased at an annualised rate of 4.6%. After accounting for inflation, the average home value has risen by just 1.5% per year. Stocks have generated roughly 7% per year over the long run after accounting for inflation. In other words, the stock market has generated returns at more than four times the rate of real estate appreciation.

With that being said, I do have some gripes with the stats above. Firstly, it ignores the excess volatility you get from the stock market. Secondly, and more importantly, you can’t just strip out the leverage effect. One final unique upside; if the capital appreciation isn’t what you expect, you can still live in it. The stock market doesn’t offer you a roof over your head. Like most things in life, nothing is ever as good, or as bad, as it seems. Property is no different. With the background out of the way, let’s get into the important stuff.

WHERE DO PRICES GO FROM HERE?

My opinion: Do I think house prices are cripplingly high for first-time buys? Yes. Do I think they can go higher? Absolutely. While I don’t think that property can continue to grow at the same clip into a rising interest rate environment, there are too

MARY MALONE’S PRAYER FOR HEALING Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly re-create me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged cells. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen

O Holy Mother Mary, obtain for me a share in the holy dispositions which filled your beautiful soul, during the nine months you bore your divine son. Make me a mother after Gods own heart forming my children to serve him here on earth, and to be a means of spreading his Kingdom and leading other souls to him. St. Joseph head of the holy family pray for the father of this child that he and I may rear our family so that our home may be like the holy home in Nazareth. May the children and we be reunited in the eternal home to rejoice for all eternity at the feet of God. Amen. AM

WILL SHOOT, WILL SCORE,

WILL SHINE Star forward William Shine kicks 0-9 as Sem reclaim Munster crown The Sem are back at the summit of Munster colleges football for the first time since 2017. The Killarney football nursery deservedly took down last Saturday’s Corn Uí Mhuirí final following an assured second-half display against Tralee CBS, with dynamic forwards Cian McMahon and Will Shine doing the bulk of damage. Attention will now turn to the All-Ireland semi-final and a possible return to Croke Park. If Brendan’s can get the ball into the hands of their marquee talents with regularity, they will give themselves every opportunity of going all the way.

REMATCH

Cheered on by an amusingly boisterous travelling support, Tralee CBS gave as good as they got in the opening period of this provincial decider. The Sem started brightly but the influence of the allStacks midfield pairing of Armin Heinrich and Conor Horan grew as the half wore on. This, coupled with a tricky wind, meant that the Sem struggled to win their own kickouts in the second quarter, but they still managed to remain in contention thanks in the main to the scoring exploits of the excellent Shine. The teams were tied at eight as they ran

CORN UÍ MHUIRÍ FINAL __________________________________________________________________________________

St Brendan’s College 0-17 | Tralee CBS 0-12 FITZGERALD STADIUM down the tunnel for half-time, and as they ran side-by-side down that tunnel, a shemozzle ensued. Thankfully it all simmered down without major incident but the flashpoint was perhaps a sign of things to come. What followed after the break was a raucous, high-intensity affair and if the Sem were caught a little on their heels in the first, they were very much on the front foot in the second. With the likes of Harry Byrne and Darragh Fleming on top at the back and Shine, McMahon and Alex Hennigan (the Sem’s youngest player) excelling up front, the men in green and gold finally began to put their stamp on the game. Quick, direct ball into the corners invariably spelled trouble for the Tralee school; McMahon and Shine were simply too strong, too fast, and too skilled to handle. Jordan Kissane (0-3) and Conor Horan (0-4) were the most likely CBS players to snatch a goal, but they were well contained.

Fittingly, it was the Crokes/Legion tandem that combined for the final two scores of the day. First McMahon scored his third point to make it a two-score game and then Shine tapped over a close-in free to put the icing on the cake. Shine (0-9) picked up the Man of the Match award for his efforts and captain McMahon accepted the trophy alongside Shane McGlynn.

HOGAN CUP

Next up is the Hogan Cup semi-final against St Mary’s Magherafelt on February 26/27. Venue TBD. Team manager Kevin Cronin will be hoping to have some of his injured players available for that fixture. Readers will recall that Derry won the All-Ireland minor title last year and some of these players are still students in St Pat’s. Indeed, one of their team is penciled into the Derry senior side. While we are on the topic of age, both St Brendan’s and Tralee CBS had most of their players up around the age of 18.

Normally, the Kerry minor manager and selectors look to these well contested colleges games to source players. Of the starting 15 for St Brendan’s, Alex Hennigan may be the only player eligible for minor intercounty this year (remember the minor age bracket now is U17). On last week’s performance, Hennigan is a good bet to start with the Kerry minors this year and a number of the subs may also get a call up. However, James Williams will sadly be out of luck. Unfortunately, the talented young Kilcummin player suffered the dreaded cruciate injury in the days leading up to the Sem v Green match.

ST BRENDAN’S COLLEGE: A O’Sullivan; C Lynch, T Clifford, H Byrne; D Fleming, D O’Callaghan, J Kelleher; L Randles, K O’Sullivan; M Moriarty, C Foley, C Keating; C McMahon, A Hennigan, W Shine. Subs: M O’Shea, A O’Neill, M Mullane, C Kelliher. TRALEE CBS: B Quilter; B Donnellan, J Foley, C White; C Browne, S McGrath, D Sweeney; A Heinrich, C Horan; B Hanafin, T O’Donnell, A Sheehy; J Kissane, D Sayers, J Brosnan. Subs: M O’Connell, D Moriarty, TJ Heaphy, R O’Connell.

Momentum key as Kerry look to keep on rolling During the McGrath Cup, Kerry manager Jack O’Connor stressed the importance of finding some momentum and confidence. If those positive vibes were significant to him in a pre-season tournament in January, you can be certain that he’s desperate for more of the same heading into Round 3 of the league. Positivity was all around us following that McGrath Cup final win over Cork, although much of it had dissipated by the time Jimmy Hyland popped over his late equaliser in Newbridge a week later. Kerry were poor that day, particularly in the second half, but they got the response they needed against the Dubs a fortnight ago. Now, momentum is key. Donegal are the next photo on the dartboard and Kerry will be fancied to hit their targets in the park on Sunday afternoon, but the fact that the men from Tír Chonaill made light work of Kildare is perhaps a cause for concern. Declan Bonner’s side had five points to spare against a team Kerry only just about drew with. Yes, Newbridge and the conditions were factors in that frustrating draw, but Kerry must be wary of Donegal nevertheless. Looking at the history books, the most recent meeting between these two teams can be written off. Donegal sent half a team to Tralee for the final game of the 2020 league – they were playing Tyrone in the championship the week after – and Kerry strolled to a facile 16-point win. That victory secured the league title for Peter Keane’s team and it’s worth remembering that Kerry are seeking a unique two-and-a-half-in-a-row after sharing last season’s title with Dublin.

NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1

_________________________________________________________________________

Kerry v Donegal Sunday at 1.45pm Fitzgerald Stadium Jack O’Connor should have the majority of his panel available to him - excepting the longer-term injury concerns, namely David Moran (groin), Joe O’Connor (knee) and Stefan Okunbor (shoulder). Mike Breen (hamstring) was initially expected back in early February but he has missed the last two fixtures, as well as MTU Kerry’s recent Sigerson defeat to NUI Galway. The good news for Kerry’s manager, and intercounty managers across the board, is that the third-level colleges season has now ended. The combined responsibilities had certainly been asking a lot of some players. David Clifford, for instance, played three games in seven days for UL and Kerry between January 30 and February 5. Clifford has another quick turnaround for this National League encounter. He played 60 minutes-plus against NUI Galway in Wednesday's Sigerson Cup final. Incidentally, the Fossa man made his competitive intercounty debut against Donegal at the same venue in 2018. As for Donegal, the man Clifford has cited as one of his favourite players growing up, Michael Murphy, went off injured in that Kildare match two weeks ago and he will naturally be a big loss if he is unavailable. Either way, Kerry will be eager to keep on rolling and with a strong lineup and home advantage, they should have enough to get the job done. VERDICT: Kerry by four.

Four-point win for Kerry ladies NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIVISION 2A __________________________________________________________________________________

Kerry 0-11 | Tipperary 1-4 FITZGERALD STADIUM

A typically eye-catching performance by Kerry great Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh fired Kerry to a comfortable four-point victory over Tipperary in the first round of the 2022 Lidl National League.

LEADER: Kerry's current stand-in captain Seán O'Shea in action against Donegal in 2019. Photo: Ray McManus/Sportsfile.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh kicked 0-8 (five frees) of The Kingdom’s 0-11 total, with Niamh Carmody (0-2) and Anna Galvin (0-1) also chipping in with scores on the day. It could and, perhaps, should have been more comfortable for Darragh Long and Declan Quill’s team – they led 8-1 midway through the second half – but in the

50th minute Angela McGuigan’s flicked finish gave Tipperary a lifeline. That three-pointer made it a twopoint game and all of a sudden an upset was on the cards. But Kerry settled the ship with points by Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Carmody, and the hosts held on to win by four. Next up for Kerry is an away match against a Clare team who were defeated by Laois in Round 1. That match takes place in Doonbeg on Saturday at 3pm. Kerry’s next home fixture is against Laois in Killarney on March 6.

Online ticketing leaves older fans out in the cold The GAA’s shift to cashless matches is unfair on supporters who are less tech-savvy, writes Eamonn Fitzgerald This week I am returning to an issue I have highlighted previously in this column. The biblical story of “no room at the inn” sprang to my mind prior to the colleges final at Lewis Road on Saturday afternoon last. As usual for matches in the stadium, the stewarding was excellent, but some supporters did not gain entry. Oh yes, there was plenty of room inside in the stadium, both in the stand and on the terraces. My estimate was an attendance of about 2,000, but it could - and should - have been more. Some people arrived at the gates with their tenners but were refused entry. I met many of these disgruntled patrons, all great supporters of the GAA over their lifetimes. Entry to the game was by pre-paid ticket only. The GAA is moving very much to the cashless norm of all-ticket games only, especially intercounty and also big club games. This colleges game was also cashless. I can see some logic to this relatively new departure by the GAA. One can buy a match ticket online. All you need then is your mobile phone to book a ticket, which can be scanned from your phone at the turnstiles. Scan yes, so easy, but while it isn’t a scam, some genuine supporters are

Eamonn FITZGERALD

I met too many disgruntled people outside the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday last. Genuine GAA supporters deserve better being denied access. And most of these are older people, who may not be tech-savvy. They have not embraced the digital age and are uncomfortable with modern technology. They are unable, or afraid, to press the correct button. There are still people who do not have a credit card and even if they do, they are very reluctant to give out their account details when the message comes up to ‘proceed to buy’. In the case of last Saturday’s game, the Munster PPS council, the organisers of the fixture, did not get the message out early enough and clearly enough that it

was an all-ticket game. Social media is not frequented by the cohort of supporters who turned up with their OAP rate of a fiver (great value by Munster PPC). Everyone does not log on to Facebook. How were they to know that admission had to be pre-paid? Imagine the grandparents arriving at Lewis Road to cheer on their grandchildren on this big colleges final day. Will the youngsters make the Kerry minors? It would have been a very easy thing to do on Saturday last to have a ticket van parked outside the grounds where people could give cash for a ticket and then proceed into the game.

x

That is done for the intercounty and big club matches. The facility to purchase match tickets from local retail outlets gives some people the opportunity to buy one, but we need only look at the experience in the week before the Kerry v Dublin game for clarification. The tickets went online on the Monday, but by lunchtime the online tickets and the availability to purchase in a local supermarket ceased to exist. The match was an early sell-out. I met too many disgruntled people outside the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday last. Genuine GAA supporters deserve better. Technology is not infallible. In December 2020, the GAA nationally paid out a reported €10 million to Ticketmaster, the USA company owned by Live Nation Entertainment, to provide a five-year service contract. On Sunday last the system broke down, causing pandemonium for people who wished to attend the National League hurling games. Get back to the system of allocating the tickets through the clubs. The genuine supporter will then be rewarded for attending club games and supporting the club’s lotto.

Historic first National League win for Cougars NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIVISION 1 ___________________________________________________________________________________

Killarney Cougars 87 | Portlaoise Panthers 67 PRES GYM The 11th of February 2022 is a date that will go down in the history books for the Cougars: it was the day the Killarney club secured their first ever victory at National League level. The Cougars first season at the top table has been a challenging one and heading into last weekend’s clash against the Portlaoise Panthers, they were winless after 11 games. Despite several promising performances, that elusive victory remained out of reach. That all changed on Friday last when the Panthers came to town.

CONFIDENCE

BIG WIN: Mark O'Shea was a key player for the Killarney Cougars as they notched their first win of the season.

A good, confident start that included two three pointers by Mark O’Shea gave the home support early cause for optimism. Portlaoise responded well with a couple of threes by Gary Morrissey and Rian O'Connell, as well as seven points by Kyla Burke. Then the Cougars’ recently acquired American Rich Dunham drained a three at the end of the quarter as the sides finished level on 19. The home team had a good start to the second quarter with baskets by O’Shea, Tommy Bowler and Jack Lynch, and two baskets apiece by Andrew Fitzgerald and Tommy Bowler pushed them out in front. Big Conor Gallagher was introduced by Portlaoise to provide more offensive options and Burke and O’Connell added further baskets, but the Cougars deservedly led 39-35 at half-time. The third quarter saw Cougars adding scores quickly and threes by O’Shea, Bowler and Dunham pushed the lead out to 13. Fitzgerald added five points as the Killarney men opened up a 13-point lead by the end of the period.

Cougars were playing with a lot of confidence and they maintained control of the game in the fourth, which allowed their coach Ignas Sijanas to run his bench. Meanwhile, Dunham and O’Shea continued to be real thorns in the Panthers’ side. Players and coaches embraced at the final buzzer as the club celebrated a maiden win in the National League. The challenge now is to build on this result and finish the season with a flourish. Next up is an away match against Fr Mathews in Cork on Saturday with a home game against the Waterford Vikings on February 26.

LAKERS

Across town, Scotts Lakers St Paul’s have a double-header this weekend as they look to bounce back from their narrow defeat to UCC Demons in the Mardyke Arena on Sunday. Lakers coach Jarlath Lee felt the team had a collective disappointment over last weekend’s result against the league leaders, which is a sure sign of the progress they've made this season. He was also left to rue the amount of points Demons gathered from the charity stripe. “Going down by 10 points to the league leaders, a seasoned team, has left us deeply disappointed,” he said. “We had two good quarters, the first and the third. The second went a bit scrappy while the fourth left us frustrated at some of the referee’s calls. But aside from that we know we can do better. "We have two games next weekend, two games we’re targeting for two wins. We are a strong team and we’ll be looking to return to winning ways in front of our own fans on Saturday night against Portlaoise (7.30pm).”

Sem tee up academy partnership The very best golfers will tell you that every day on the course is a school day. Now, thanks to a new initiative by the men’s section of Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, students at St Brendan’s College are about to find that out for themselves. Officials at the famous Killarney golf club were delighted to announce this week that students at St Brendan's College are to be schooled at the Killarney Golf Academy at Lackabane.

The innovative golf programme will see club professional Mark Heinemann providing a series of lessons to the Sem’s senior and junior golf teams. This new partnership is taking place at a great time for St Brendan’s, who will be participating in the National Schools competition in Newcastle West Golf Club in March. It is hoped that this new arrangement between Killarney Golf & Fishing Club and the Sem will help to develop and nurture new golfing talent in the greater Killarney area.

PARTNERSHIP: At the launch of the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club/St Brendan's College Junior Golf Programme were (back) Graham Spring (Director of Golf, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club), Tommy Galvin (Men's Captain), Alex O'Callaghan, Seán Coffey (Principal, St Brendan's College), Mark Heinemann KGFC Head Professional), Jason Arthur (Team Coach), Ryan Neeson and Junior Finnegan (President). HOME AGAIN: Kevin Cronin is getting ready for his first fight in Ireland since his pro debut in 2019. Photo: Sam Barnes/Sportsfile.

KNOCK-OUT: The Kingdom Warrior defeated Bosnian Boris Mrkonjic in Luxembourg in 2021.

Cronin’s motivation levels at ‘all-time high’ Highly rated Kerry boxer Kevin Cronin talks to Adam Moynihan about getting through the pandemic, switching to super middleweight, and his upcoming fight in Cork “Some good news, thank God. It’s about time, isn’t it?” You can hear the relief in Kevin Cronin’s voice. It’s a good job he’s a fighter because the Milltown native has really had to scrap through the pandemic. Fights called off. Opponents backing out last-minute. Expensive foreign bouts just to keep the show on the road. Now, three years on from his first professional fight on Irish soil, the Kingdom Warrior is preparing for his second. On April 2, he will try to improve upon his impressive professional record of 4-0 when he appears on ‘The Beginning’ card in Cork. In a word, Cronin is buzzing. “I’m excited to get back fighting on Irish soil and also delighted to get an eight-rounder. It will be an Irish title eliminator as well so I’m buzzing for that,” the 25-year-old told the Killarney Advertiser.

“Having a home crowd will probably take bit of getting used to. I haven’t even fought in front of a crowd for three years - it has all been behind closed doors. It’s going to be a nice buzz, and it’s even nicer that it’s in Cork rather than Dublin or Belfast or anywhere else. It’s nice and close to home.”

WILL

Going three full years without properly experiencing the thrill of competitive action would test the resolve of any athlete. Cronin accepts that it was a trying time for him, but he never lost the will to carry on. “It has been tough. Lockdown has everything to do with it. There have been no fights. I’ve had to travel to get fights. It has been costing a fortune. But in terms of motivation, I obviously do have the motivation if I was able to get

through what we’ve been put through. Only the tough last through that. There has been a lot of people retiring just because it has been costing too much, and they weren’t getting the fights. “But for me, the motivation has always been good. I always knew that things would come back to this stage. I got myself eligible for titles during lockdown and here I am, one fight away from fighting 10 rounds for an Irish title. I would be the first to ever do it from this part of the country, and the first to ever win it. “To be honest with you, seeing that opportunity in front of me, motivation is at an all-time high.” The Kerryman’s next appearance is made all the more intriguing by the revelation that he will be dropping down a weight division, from light heavyweight to super middleweight. The decision is a tactical one. “I wanted to try super middleweight at some stage anyway but there’s a title fight at super middleweight on the card in Cork so I’m chasing down the winner. The winner of that fight will be fighting

for the Irish title and I want to be there, standing in front of them. “I’m going to go down and get myself eligible at 168 pounds, and take the strap off them.” Cronin’s opponent on April 2 will be revealed in the coming weeks but, having experienced the uncertainty caused by late card changes in the past, he is determined to not let their identity affect his preparations. “I have to prepare for whatever opponent comes my way. We don’t know who it’s going to be yet and I don’t care really. I’m not asking questions about opponents anymore because I’ve seen the way they pull out. “The camp kicked off this week so I was sparring last night and I’ll be back up to Dublin for more sparring tomorrow, and then Cork on Saturday for more sparring. So it’s all picking up from here on out. It’s going to be a heavy seven or eight weeks ahead of me.” Interest in the event is expected to be high. Cronin has already sold his batch of tickets, although he has been assured that more are on the way. The venue is set to be changed from Glen Rovers GAA grounds so that’s another variable to potentially cause a distraction. But the big hitter from Mid Kerry is unbothered. He has waited too long for this moment. “I have enough on my plate, training for an eight-rounder. It’s going to be the biggest fight of my career. There’s no doubt about it.”

Leah welcomes Irish teammates to Killarney St Paul’s and Ireland U16 basketballer Leah McMahon will welcome her international teammates to Killarney this week as the girls in green continue their preparations for the FIBA European Championships.

FRIENDLY: The Killarney Celtic team who took on LOI side Treaty United on Friday last.

Treaty come from behind to beat Celts

Head coach Andy Gill is bringing his young charges to town for a training session at the Presentation Gym. The Irish team will also be guests of the club at Saturday night’s National League match between Paul’s senior men’s team, Scotts Lakers, and the Portlaoise Panthers. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, St Paul’s chairman Paul Sheehan said it was a great honour to host the Irish team. “It's great to welcome Leah and the Irish U16s to Killarney this weekend,” he said. “Leah is a standout talent everyone is very proud of her achievements so far.

And we’re pretty sure there is a lot more to come. “Hopefully Andy Gill, his team management and players enjoy their stay, and we’re looking forward to seeing them at the game on Saturday. “On behalf of the club, I’d like to wish Leah and her teammates all the very best this summer.” After two years of COVID-related disruptions, Coach Gill is hoping to build a team capable of competing at the 2022 European Championships, which take place in Sarajevo in August. On Wednesday Ireland discovered who their opponents will be in Bosnia & Herzegovina as the draw was made in Freising, Germany. The Irish were drawn in Division B Group A alongside Serbia, Netherlands, North Macedonia, and the host nation Bosnia & Herzegovina. The competition will run from August 18-27.

League of Ireland side Treaty United defeated Killarney Celtic in a preseason friendly last weekend, but they certainly didn’t have things all their own way.

In fact, on a wet and windy night in Celtic Park it was the hosts who drew first blood when Matej Vrljicak executed a neat, first-time finish with just 14 minutes on the clock. Celtic’s lead was short-lived, however, as Conor Melody equalised with a wellstruck half-volley from the edge of the box. The Limerick outfit, who operate in the second tier of the LOI, took the lead just before half-time after a well-worked set-piece was swept home by Kieran Hanlon. While Treaty are preparing for the start of their 2022 season, Celtic’s focus now returns to their 2021/22 campaign. They face Grattan United of Cork in the Munster Junior Cup on Sunday. Kick-off in Celtic Park is at midday.

Elsewhere in the same competition, Listowel Celtic travel to Waterford to take on Portlaw United. Back at home, there are two matches in the KDL Premier A on Sunday. Killarney Athletic can move up to second with victory over Camp; The Blues travel to the Dingle Peninsula in third place, three points behind Camp but with a superior goal difference (and two games in hand). Kick-off is at 2pm. Meanwhile, sixth place Tralee Dynamos host a Killorglin team still seeking their first win of the season. Kick-off in Cahermoneen is at 11am. In the Premier B, MEK Galaxy are away to Castlegregory Celtic, and Killarney Celtic B are at home to Rattoo Rovers.

KILLARNEY WELCOME: St Paul's Irish international Leah McMahon at Ross Castle.

MOTORSPORT BRIEFS... |

Killarney club’s first gravel rally since 2007

Killarney and District Motor Club member Liam Moynihan will have the honour of being first on the road for his ‘home’ forestry rally. The local club is running its first gravel rally since 2007 on Sunday. All proceeds from the Castleisland-based event will be donated to the Irish Community Air Ambulance. The Millstreet, County Cork native is co-driving for Tyrone’s Cathan McCourt in a Ford Fiesta Raly2. The pair arrive in Ker-

ry on the back of good form. They were fourth overall on last the recent Corrib Oil Galway International Rally in the same car. Last November they were third overall in the Killarney Historic Rally in a Ford Escort Mk2. East Kerry co-driver Donagh Crowley is on pacenote duty for Ballyvourney’s Ger Lucey in a Mitsubishi Lancer E8. |

Event sponsor enters rally

Event co-sponsor Cyril Wharton will make his gravel rally debut in a newly acquired Subaru Impreza. The former clerk of the course for the event has enticed Donal

Falvey out of retirement for the rally. Elaine Ní Shé, of Lissivigeen National School, is on pacenote duty for County Down’s John Gordon in a Ford Escort, while Rathmore school teacher Declan Casey will compete alongside Tyrone’s Hugh McQuaid in a similar machine. |

Race it again Sam

Sam Leech joked that he believes that this loose surface rally will offer more grip than the recent tarmac Galway International Rally. The Fossa man had an adventurous weekend in Galway earlier this month, breaking

two driveshafts and a misfiring engine on his way to a class win in his Opel Corsa, while also contending with torrential rain and flooded roads. |

Rally of the Lakes details

Early details of the Rally of the Lakes have also been released by the club. The April 29 to May 1 event will feature a town centre ceremonial start on Friday. The organising committee is promising a mix of classic and new stages with Moll’s Gap, Ballaghbeama and Gortnagne already confirmed to be included in the schedule.

Kilcummin KILCUMMIN LOOKING GOOD: We are aware that the issue of dog fouling is a major problem in the village at present, especially on footpaths and in the Biodiversity Park. We would like to remind everybody that it is an offence to let a dog under your control foul in a public place. If it does happen, you must remove the faeces and dispose of them in a suitable, sanitary manner. We must all respect other road/footpath users especially children, people with buggies, etc. There is a real danger of children playing in the park putting it in their mouth and, also, of taking it to school or home from the footpaths. KILCUMMIN LOOKING GOOD AGM: Kilcummin Looking Good is a voluntary organisation that has secured Departmental, Leader and Kerry County Council funding which has enabled us to complete and continue to do various projects throughout the Parish, Village and Biodiversity Park. We are currently seeking extra volunteers so if you have a bit of time to spare are interested in the environment or you are new in our community and would like to get

involved this is an ideal opportunity for you. We would love to welcome new members to our AGM. which will be held in the Parish Office beside the Church on Monday, February 28 at 8pm.
