Up to 650 Ukrainians - who had no option but to flee their war torn country - are to be rehomed in Kerry including two Killarney hotels, some by the end of the long weekend. | By Sean Moriarty

The refugees are also to be housed in hotels in Tralee and Cahersiveen. Some have already arrived at the Earl of Desmond Hotel just outside Tralee.

The Killarney Advertiser understands that two local hotels are being prepared to welcome refugees as early as this weekend.

A new interagency group was established in Kerry yesterday (Wednesday).

They have already shipped close to 200 pallets of goods to the Polish border and one local truck load is said to have made it all the way to Kyiv, the under-attack Ukrainian capital.

Giant sunflower shows solidarity with Ukraine A giant creative sunflower – the national flower of Ukraine – has been installed on the steeple of the landmark St Mary’s Church of Ireland in Killarney as a gesture of solidarity with the people of the war-torn country.

The spectacular artistic display can be viewed as Killarney extending a warm hand of welcome to the refugees from Ukraine who are arriving in the town this week.

An initiative of the St Patrick’s Festival Killarney committee, the 15m high sunflower has been designed and created by Kilgarvan-based artists Sophie Lodge and Maitiu Gray who are part of the creative design team for the world famous Notting Hill Carnival.

“This can be considered a gesture of solidarity with the people who are arriving here from Ukraine and their loved ones who have been left behind," St Patrick’s Killarney Festival Chairman, Paul Sherry, said.

“It’s just a very small way of showing them that we are with them, that we are here for them and that we warmly wel-

come them. Basically, it shows them that we care."

Emerging from the stalk of the decorative sunflower on the church steeple are several shamrocks – the national symbol of Ireland – and creative butterflies in the colours of the national flags of Ukraine and Ireland.

The Killarney sunflower will be illuminated after dark and the festival team has thanked the Venerable Simon Lumby of St Mary’s Church of Ireland for his enthusiasm and cooperation.

The theme of this year’s parade in Killarney is Earth: An Chré and there will be a special focus on butterflies, particularly focusing on the 12 species native to Killarney: The Holly Blue, Painted Lady, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Common White, Silver Washed Fritillary, Admiral, Marsh Fritillary, Brown Hairstreak, Green Hairstreak, Orange Tipped and Clouded Yellow.

The charity is being led by well-known Killarney photographer Konrad Paprocki and he and his team have held back several pallets of vital equipment in anticipation of the arrival of refugees.

“I want to praise their wisdom in retaining a number of pallets,” Mayor Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser.

Retained donations include nappies, toothbrushes and other essential hygiene products.

Mr Paprocki is awaiting confirmation from the Saint Vincent de Paul Society on what products he and his team need to set aside in Killarney, but they will continue to collect goods and essential products.

Shipments to Poland will continue alongside localised distribution once the 650 refugees are re-housed in Kerry.

Killarney centre to help new Ukrainian support group The Killarney Immigrant Support Centre (KASI) is part of a newly formed interagency group that will coordinate the response to the arrival of Ukrainian refugees in the county.

“This year’s celebration will really be something very special and we are delighted to see so many local groups, clubs, organisations and individuals taking part,” Paul said.

The parade, organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce in association with Kerry County Council and Fáilte Ireland, will be the focal point of this year’s festival in the town – the first time it has been held since 2019.

The new group was established yesterday (Wednesday) and has already met to discuss the needs of the arriving refugees.

Included in the new group are representatives of the HSE, Kerry County Council, An Garda Síochána, the Department of Social Protection, Kerry Education and Training Board, the community and voluntary sector, local development companies, Kerry Chambers, local transport providers, and organisations working with refugees in the county including the Killarney Immigrant Support Centre.

“The interagency group will work closely to ensure that refugees receive a range of supports, interventions and advice for the foreseeable future and will ensure that this can be achieved in a targeted and efficient manner,” said an agency spokesperson.

IFTA win for Jessie Buckley Killarney's Jessie Buckley is celebrating this week after winning an IFTA for 'Best Supporting Actress Film'. | By Michelle Crean Winners were revealed at a virtual ceremony during Saturday night's Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) awards on Virgin Media One, with Deirdre O’Kane at the helm.

Connecting from his home in Los Angeles, Irish actor Colin Farrell presented the award for Best Supporting Actress Film.

Farrell announced Jessie Buckley as the winner for her role in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s 'The Lost Daughter'.

She paid tribute to her fellow nominees saying “Thank you so much, this is so lovely. Thanks, IFTA. It’s not mine it’s all of ours, you are all amazing women, I’m so proud to stand beside you now and all of our life".

Buckley thanked her director Maggie Gyllenhaal before signing off with a tribute to her fellow actresses saying, “long live the brilliant women!”

The Virtual IFTA Awards 2022 was a star-studded affair, with Chris Pine, Colin

Farrell, Michael Moore, Roma Downey, Fionnula Flanagan among the stellar lineup of guests at the ceremony, presenting awards to the likes of Ciarán Hinds, Jessie Buckley, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Moe Dunford, Kin and An Cailín Ciúin.

The incredible array of guest presenters also included Nicola Coughlan, Chris O’Dowd, Charlie Cox and many more who virtually presented awards to Irish talent for their extraordinary achievements.

Nominees joined the show virtually and were clearly enjoying the camaraderie of talking with their fellow nominees in the various categories and many of the nominees hosting their own IFTA-viewing parties with their fellow cast and crew, as well as friends and family.

Oscar nominee Jessie was pictured at the BAFTAs at the weekend after receiving a nomination for 'Best Supporting Actress' in ‘The Lost Daughter'.

Next up is the Oscars which will air live on ABC on Sunday, March 27.

Anne Dolan (59), who lost two brothers to cancer before coming through her own diagnosis, says she is glad to be able to spend time with her grandchildren after receiving treatment for breast cancer in 2016.

“It was an awful worry after losing my brothers to cancer – Tommy in 1997 and then Donie in 2004 – when my own mammogram picked up a lump,” she said.

“My daughter was expecting our first grandchild during my chemotherapy treatment. It was such a terrifying time, not knowing if I’d be around to see the little child grow up.

“Thankfully it was a good outcome for me. She is nearly five now, and is the love of my life. We also had our second grandchild last July, and it was so different this time. I’m determined to see both my grandchildren grow up.”

During her illness she reached out for support from the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Centre in Cork University Hospital during her time there.

“I was always one of the first to get my daffodil every year and wear it with pride. Especially after the experience with my brothers, we’ve always been very supportive of it,” she added.

gramme and it was amazing. At the time you have no hair and you’re feeling like crap, but it makes you feel like a million dollars, it’s a fabulous service.”

Daffodil Day returns to the streets for the first time since 2019 on March 25.

The Irish Cancer Society is calling on the public to take part in any way they can to show solidarity and support for anyone affected by cancer.

Multi-storey car park plan back on agenda | By Sean Moriarty A multi-storey car park on Beech Road – first mooted in 2005 – could be back on the Council’s agenda.

One of the key findings of a recent survey carried about by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce was the lack of available parking in the town particularly during the peak summer tourism months.

Several ideas have been discussed at Killarney Municipal District meetings, but apart from the car park that opened on Rock Road there has yet to be any sort of meaningful solution found to the longstanding problem.

Earlier this year elected councillors vent-

ed their disappointment after plans for the long-idle Áras Pádraig were unveiled but did not include a provision for a multi-storey car park on the site.

This prompted Mayor Marie Moloney to investigate previous plans for a multi-storey car park in Beech Road.

This was first mooted 17 years ago and fell by the wayside for various reasons but it could be back on the agenda again in the coming weeks.

“The proposal for the provision of a multi-storey car park in the Beech Road car park is contained within the Killarney Urban Master Plan 2005 which was prepared by Murray O'Laoire Architects. Killarney Municipal District Office will make this plan available to the [elected] members,” a Council official said.

Jackie's off to New York to mark 80th birthday What a gathering it was for Jackie Foley as 55 members of his family came together for a very special birthday celebration. | By Michelle Crean Jackie, originally from Beaufort but living in Countess Grove for 45 years, turned 80 on March 5 and enjoyed a celebration in Killarney Golf & Fishing Club last weekend.

His life-long dream is to travel to New York and knowing this, his family surprised him with a ticket to mark the milestone birthday.

He's now planning to travel there in October with his daughter Karen and granddaughter Emma to see Ellis Island, the immigrant inspection station where his father went when he moved to America.

Jackie, who worked in Liebherr as a fitter from age 16 to 65, was joined at the

sit down meal by his children Shane, Norma and Karen, his siblings Denis (Kenmare) and Mick and Noreen (Beaufort), his in laws, his nine grandchildren aged from 25 to eight-years-old, Cillian, Emma, Grace, Lillie, Jean, Noelle, Paddy, Jack and Sarah, and many others.

"We surprised him with a ticket to New York," his daughter Norma told the Killarney Advertiser.

"He always wanted to go to New York as his father went through Ellis Island, so he'd love a tour of it."

And she added that he really loved the party.

"He was the last man standing. He doesn't drink and has been a pioneer all his life. We have to celebrate these things if the last two years are anything to go by."

Temporary footpath repairs for Muckross Road | By Sean Moriarty Temporary improvements are to be made to two separate sections along the Muckross Road - but major works are going to take more time.

This is according to Kerry County officials who were responding to requests for upgrades by Cllr John O’Donoghue at a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting.

Mr O’Donoghue called for works to be undertaken along the cyclist/jarvey path along the Muckross Road near Hegarty’s Shop and on the footpath between the Woodlawn and Countess Road junctions.

“Kerry County Council have inspected the location and a short section of the jarvey/cycle path requires drainage works and minor surface repair works. Killar-

ney Municipal District Office will carry out these specific repairs by Q2 2022,” a Council official told the meeting.

“To bring the Muckross Road jarvey/cycle path, which runs along the Muckross Road from the Flesk Bridge to the entrance to the National Park, up to a similar standard as other cycleways such as the Fossa Cycleway would require significant design and investment. The project would be potentially suitable for funding under ORIS and Active Travel.”

In relation to the second query the Council official added: “As part of the Muckross Road Safety Scheme, all the footpaths between Woodlawn Cross and Countess Road will be upgraded. In the interim, the Killarney Municipal District Office is applying for funding from the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to carry out minor repairs.”

60 tourists to join Mayor for parade | By Sean Moriarty

Killarney people could be among the first people to see a documentary on local adventurer Kevin Leahy’s exploits in the Arctic. | By Sean Moriarty

Kevin, who runs the Blacksheep Hostel on New St, has finished his second arctic ultra-marathon since February.

On Sunday last he completed the 500km Lapland Arctic Ultra in Sweden after five and half days in the frozen wilderness.

Last month he finished the 500km Yukon Ultra in Canada.

Alongside him for both journeys was local filmmaker and director Adrian McCarthy.

His Grandview Media production company is now in the process of editing footage from both races and footage of Kevin’s preparations over the last two years.

It will be turned into a documentary called ‘1000kms of Chaos’ and Adrian is hopeful it will be screened at the local film festival later this year.

“We start 20 weeks of editing this week and hope to launch it in September, so

hopefully we can show it at the Kerry International Film Festival,” Adrian told the Killarney Advertiser.

“That’s a story for another day. Right now Kevin is the story. He is an amazing man.

People that know this sport said finishing two Ultra races like this could not be done in such a short space of time. These athletes usually do one event every six months. The idea itself may have been crazy but the execution was meticulous.

Everything he said he was going to do over the last two years – he did it. No one knew if this could even be done but he has done it. What’s next – Everest would be too small for this man. He is the kind of fellow who would want to walk across Greenland or the South Pole but he would take a canoe to get there.”

Kevin enjoyed an extended holiday in Sweden this week but he will be home in time to give a talk on his achievements at next weekend’s Wander Wild Festival.

Mayor of Killarney, Marie Moloney, has welcomed a return to normality as Killarney prepares for its first St Patrick’s Day Parade since the pandemic struck.

However, she also urged caution as COVID-19 is still prevalent in the community.

“It has now been three years since our last St Patrick’s Day Festival and parade.

We are just emerging from two very difficult years due to the pandemic, however I would urge people to still be cautious as COVID-19 is still around and people are still contracting the disease, and to do what is comfortable with them to stay safe. With that being said, it is great to see things returning to some normality,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.

Dog fouling is “a serious issue” say councillors Kerry County Council plans to carry out a countywide anti-dog fouling awareness campaign after the issue was raised at a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting.

The Council say they will provide additional dog fouling signage “in identified areas throughout the town”.

The move follows complaints from both Mayor Marie Moloney and Cllr Niall Kelleher.

Cllr Moloney recalled a particularly distressing story at a recent Killarney Munic-

"I also want to invite the people of Rathmore, who unfortunately could not go ahead with their parade last Sunday, to come and join us in the Killarney parade this year.”

“Our Environmental Awareness Officer (EAO) has recently arranged an anti-dog fouling campaign which is being rolled out in 147 schools across the county and the EAO will also liaise with the press and communications office with a view to running a similar campaign on the Kerry County Council social media platforms and in the print/radio media.”

Community fundraise for couple's young sons One generous woman is calling on the community to rally together to help raise funds for children who recently lost both parents to cancer. | By Michelle Crean Valerie Foley, who works in Leading Labels in the Killarney Outlet Centre, says the community of Milltown and beyond is just devastated following the death of well-known couple Padraig and Elaine Clifford who both died from cancer within months of each other.

Padraig passed away in January, just five months after his wife Elaine succumbed to the same illness the day before her 41st birthday.

Now Valerie wants to help support the boys; Patrick, Jack, Andrew and Connor, by raising much needed funds for them.

She has organised a coffee morning at the Nagle Rice Centre Milltown on Saturday, April 23.

So far the support in Killarney from different businesses has been fantastic, Valerie explained to the Killarney Advertiser.

"Milltown and beyond is devastated with the passing of Elaine and Padraig so I decided to have this coffee morning," Valerie said.

"I knew the boy's parents well before they passed away. They were the nicest couple. They have two boys in the primary school. Andrew is in my daughter's class making their Communion this year

Minister focuses on students' future | By Michelle Crean

It was all about students exploring their future options as Minister Simon Harris gave an informative talk on CAO and apprenticeships last week.

On Thursday, the Minister for Higher Education, accompanied by Kerry TD Brendan Griffin, paid a visit to senior students in St Brendan's College to give them some sound advice.

He was welcomed to the school by Principal Seán Coffey, Deputy Principal Bridget Lucey, Board of Management Chairperson Lorna Larkin, and Student Council members Kasper Bogalecki and Ethan Fleming.

And students had their questions at the ready.

"His visit was to speak to Fifth Years about new CAO options he has introduced," Principal Seán Coffey told the Killarney Advertiser.

"He's expanding the CAO to include apprenticeships. He's trying to broaden the number of courses available. He's promoting a change of mindset with apprenticeships in schools. It was a Q&A session and it broadened to Ukraine, single sex education and church ownership of schools," he said.

"He was really open and forthright with students and he visited our new support centre, the Brendan Centre, for special education classes."

OPEN DAY: Killarney Golf and Fishing Club's Open Day is set for this Friday (March 18).

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club is to host its first post-pandemic open day this Friday.

The day-long event is open to golfers with registered golf handicaps and members and non-members are welcome to play on the four-time Irish Open Championship golf course.

“We have already had lots of visitors book in to play. Many are probably in Killarney for the Bank Holiday weekend

and taking advantage of playing Killeen our Irish Open course,” Killarney Golf and Fishing Club’s Marketing Manager, Meg Dalton, said.

“It is nice to welcome these golfers out to us again, some have most likely played with us before and are coming back for the first time this year and particularly post-COVID. Given many of the COVID restrictions have now been lifted, their experience is likely to be closer to what it was like golfing with us before the pandemic so that’s a big positive for them and for us as a club.”

Busy week for Little Heroes Killarney’s group of Little Blue Heroes and their families met each other for the first time last weekend. | By Sean Moriarty Little Blue Heroes is a not-for-profit charity operated entirely by Garda members and staff. It aims to help families who have children undergoing long-term medical treatment for serious illness.

Last Saturday evening the Bumble 1000 Supercar road run rolled into town raising funds for the Little Blue Heroes charity.

A grand total of €15,542.74 was raised over the two-day spectacular which began in County Kildare on Saturday and finished in Dingle on Sunday.

Five of Kerry’s Little Blue Heroes were invited to the event. Three of them, Alexis O’Mahony, Frankie O’Sullivan and Kate Lehane are from Killarney, and they were joined by Ardfert’s Sean Kearney and Alana Foley from Killorglin.

“These five children had to isolate all through COVID, they could not even go to school,” Garda Gillian McEoin the local rep for Little Blue Heroes, explained to the Killarney Advertiser.

“While this was a countywide event,

the main focus was on Killarney as the drivers overnighted at the Gleneagle.

It went very well and we made a lot of memories.”

Highlights included meeting some of the drivers and characters involved in the Bumblebee 1000 and getting up close

and personal to some of Ireland’s rarest cars.

It marked the start of a busy week for all five local children. Their next high-profile event is the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Tralee where they will lead the procession through the town.

Electronic parking signs could cost in excess of €1m | By Sean Moriarty Plans to install real-time electronic car parking signs in the town centre could cost over €1m.

In November 2019 it was proposed at a Killarney Municipal District meeting that such signs would help reduce traffic congestion in the town centre.

The signs could electronically display live car park capacity and the number of spaces left in the Rock Road, Lewis Road, Outlet Centre, Fair Hill, New Street and Glebe car parks.

It is hoped the signs would help reduce the number of vehicular movements which arise due to repetitive circulation of drivers seeking parking.

The plan was put on hold due to the pandemic but was back on the Council agenda for its March meeting after Mayor Marie Moloney called for such a plan to

“Quotations were sought for the supply and installation of this technology and the cost of installing same would be in excess of €1m. Funding for this project will be applied for again under relevant grant funding schemes as they arise,” a Council official told the meeting.

Margaret is parade's grand marshal Internationally renowned tourism administrator Margaret Cahill will be the grand marshal for this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade in Killarney.

She is a vastly experienced ambassador for the industry having headed up operations for the then Bord Fáilte and, later, Tourism Ireland in North America, Canada and the UK. Now retired, Ms Cahill, who divides her time between Killarney and the UK, managed the mainland European market for the tourism body having joined the then Bord Fáilte in New York in 1970, rising to the position of promotions and marketing manager.

She was appointed General Manager, Britain, with Bord Fáilte in 1987 and, in September 2000, Bord Fáilte appointed her to head up the mainland European markets, a post she was subsequently appointed to on the formation of Tourism Ireland.

Ms Cahill started her hugely successful career with Cork/Kerry Tourism and she was based in Killarney Tourist Office.

She went on to become one of the most influential and successful visitor industry administrators of her generation.

She headed up B&B Ireland and she is also the Ireland President of Skål.

Walk raises over €2k for the people of Ukraine | By Michelle Crean

It may have been bleak and dreary weather but that didn't stop one community from showing solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

HONOUR: Guest of Honour for this year's St Patrick's Day Parade is Margaret Cahill, one of the most influential and successful visitor industry administrators of her generation.

Locals in Kilcummin got their walking shoes on and helped raise funds for war torn Ukraine at the weekend.

On Sunday, over one hundred people braved the cold wintery conditions to show help to the beleaguered people who are having to flee their country as a

result of Russia's invasion.

The Kilcummin GAA Club fundraising walk, was held in conjunction with Irish Red Cross, and raised €2,400 towards the Ukrainian Refugee Fund. The walk gave members of the local community a chance to come together to show their support for the Ukrainian people, Chairperson Ciara Kelly explained.

“The GAA club wish to express their thanks for the generosity of locals who joined us on Sunday and we are all hopeful of a peaceful resolution as soon as possible,” she said.

Moloney and her husband, Michael, and President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Niall Kelleher.

The parade, organised and funded by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Kerry County Council and Fáilte Ireland, will commence on Mission Road at 2pm today (Thursday).

Mother's Day lunch event to benefit Ukraine A Mother’s Day Buffet Lunch which is supporting the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine has received overwhelming support.

The Europe Hotel & Resort will host the event on Sunday, March 27 and all proceeds will go to those affected by the devastating humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine.

Inaugural women's hiking event deemed a success | By Sean Moriarty More guided hikes that encourage women to partake in outdoor activity and mindfulness could be on the cards after an inaugural event was deemed a success.

New logo for Kerry Biosphere Reserve

A group of 23 women, mainly from Kerry, but including some from Cork, Donegal and Longford, climbed Torc Mountain on Saturday.

The event was organised by the local branch of the national organisation 'Galz Gone Wild' which raised money for Women’s Aid. The walk was led by Tralee woman Lisa Griffin. During the hike Listry’s Lorraine O’Sullivan, a qualified mindfulness instructor, gave short talks on being present.

“I encouraged everyone to switch off their phones and be fully present for the chats and craic going up the moun-

tain and to not dwell on the events of the week gone by or focus on upcoming plans for the weekend ahead," Lorraine told the Killarney Advertiser.

“I did a guided loving kindness meditation on the way up, sending our thoughts to any women availing of Women’s Aid, which was enjoyed by all accounts. The wind picked up and the mountain got pretty wild but it didn’t blow away the spirits.”

The hike was timed to coincide the same week as International Women’s Day which was celebrated on Tuesday of last week.

“We all reported that we had hiked alone a lot throughout lockdown so it was phenomenal to be out on a Saturday morning socialising and chatting to a group of like-minded women,” she added.

“I would love to run more social hikes like this with some guided mindfulness in Kerry.”

A unique design has been selected by popular vote as the new logo to represent the Kerry Biosphere Reserve.

The open competition received over 30 entries from designers all over the world. These were shortlisted by the Kerry Biosphere Management Committee made up of representatives from South Kerry Development Partnership, Kerry County Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The three shortlisted designs were then put forward to a public vote held via social media in October 2021.

Akos Csontos, who has been living in Killarney for over 14 years, received 55% of the votes submitted and won a €500 cash prize that was kindly donated by the Killarney Hotels Group.

The new logo represents several key elements of the Kerry Biosphere Reserve.

"I have been always captivated by the natural beauty surrounding us here in Killarney and together with my beautiful wife Julia, our six-year-old son Logan and now nearly three-month-old newborn Layla, we always try to spend as much of our family time as possible in the Killarney parklands and Muckross woodland areas," he said.

"Up until December 2020 – when unfortunately, due to the pandemic my position has been made redundant - I had the pleasure to work as an in-house graphic designer and online content creator in one of Killarney’s five-star hotels. Due to its location right in the heart of Killarney National Park, I always felt even that much closer to nature as well and I think it is fair to say that all of Killarney and even greater Kerry residents are

so lucky and truly privileged to call this little piece of heaven a home.

Needless to say, I was only delighted to come across the competition details online and I instantly felt connected with the call. In my approach to the logo - apart from the official requirements - I hoped to fit in as much of the core values as possible while maintaining a clean and modern look. I hope the Kerry Biosphere and its rebranding will be successful in raising more awareness on their mission to protect and preserve all this natural beauty, especially after some of the devastating events of last year with woodland fires or not to mention their ongoing battles with rhododendron. If my logo design aids just even that small step in achieving more visibility through their representation, I will feel truly honoured to have helped them along the way."

The competition was sponsored by Killarney Hotels limited who donated the prize money awarded to the selected entry.

During the events the hotels management teams celebrated their businesses, with long service and customer service excellence awards.

Monday evening last saw the Great Southern awards held in the Dromhall Hotel, followed by the Killarney Royal awards which were held in Great Southern on Tuesday evening.

DANCING: Kilcummin National School pupils and staff were delighted to get back to traditional dancing and music as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge.

Dance and music back in Kilcummin school Following a two year break due to COVID, pupils and staff in Kilcummin NS were thrilled to finally get back to dancing!

As part of Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations they enjoyed an outdoor music session followed by a céilí.

"Our outdoor céilí has been a tradition at Kilcummin NS as part of our Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations, so we were thrilled to return to our pre-COVID-19 traditions," Principal Gillian Sheehan said.

"A special word of thanks to Kilcummin dancing teachers Mary, Adrian and John Moriarty for organising our céilí. We are

looking forward to next year’s céilí already!"

Teacher Michael Kelliher organised a traditional Irish music session with the school's talented pupils.

"There was a great buzz and excitement as the children were reunited in our Seachtain na Gaeilge festivities. Our celebrations will continue this week also, when we will hold our Lá Glas, parade and many more exciting activities."

Pupils scoot to school As part of the Green Schools initiative, Kilcummin NS participated in Scoot on a Weekday (SOW), which was held nationwide from last week.

"We were delighted that all our pupils Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class brought their scooters and helmets to school for our SOW day," Principal Gil-

lian Sheehan, told the Killarney Advertiser.

"Senior pupils will participate in the Cycle on a Weekday (COW) initiative in May. It was a great opportunity for the children to revisit their road safety lessons and they were thrilled to participate in this fantastic initiative, after a break due to COVID-19 restrictions!"

Keel goes country for community hall renovation

The community hall in Keel, Castlemaine will be rocking to the country sounds of Eddie Lee and The Paudie Coffey Band next month as locals plan a fundraiser.

The ‘Keel Goes Country’ fundraising concert takes place on Saturday, April 2 to assist with funding for recent and ongoing renovations to the hall.

With the unrivalled popularity of the headline act and the undoubted appetite for live music events, following a two-year hiatus, the 'Keel Goes Country' concert is expected to be a sell out.

The community hall in Keel was renovated to exceedingly high standards and reopened in October 2019. The venue was beginning to attract bookings from a variety of community groups, sports clubs and businesses when the pandemic hit, leaving the Keel community with financial holes to fill following the renovation and short of funding for further planned improvement projects.

The ‘Keel Goes Country’ concert is the first of many events planned to put the hall back at the centre of community activities in the parish.

“We are really looking forward to hosting this concert,” Keel Community Council chairman, Gerard O’Dowd, said. “We are seeing interest in attending from all over the county, which is not surprising, given the profile and popularity of Eddie and the Paudie Coffey band. It will be great to see quality country music and dancing in the hall after such a long time and hopefully provide some much needed funding for ongoing community projects."

The 'Keel Goes Country’ concert kicks off at 8pm on the night. Refreshments will be available throughout the evening, together with a prize raffle.

Tickets are €10 each and are available to order online from the Keel Community Facebook page and from Culloty’s Electrical, The Mall Tralee, Hickey’s Music Shop, Main St. Castleisland and all local shops in Keel and Castlemaine.

Intake for the apprenticeship begins in spring 2022 and training will be delivered in the workplace, as well as through classroom workshops and online learning modules.

The theoretical element is a mixture of on-site tuition from Liebherr experts along with modules from providers, ICATS and Train the Painter both of whom are the world’s leading, industry recognised and accredited Industrial Coatings Applicator Training Programmes.

“For us at Liebherr it is an honour to lead the way and be the first to introduce an Industrial Coating Apprenticeship to Ireland," Liebherr’s Managing Director Engineering, Charlie McCarthy, said.

"Industrial coating, is typically a multistage process involving shot blasting, priming and painting. We have made significant investments in both our shot blasting and painting facilities and now have the most advanced and sophisticated facilities in Ireland. Many of our container handling cranes are destined for port environments and are subject to

harsh corrosive coastal conditions, with expectations that the coating protection will last the entire lifetime of the crane.

With this in mind, we have recognised that the introduction of an accredited trade which can provide the necessary skills and knowledge is long overdue."

He added that this apprenticeship will be a great opportunity for someone to get trained on the latest techniques from experts in the field.

"Over three years, the apprentices will benefit from a mixture of theoretical and practical tuition. As part of the training the successful applicant will also have an opportunity to visit our sister companies in Austria and Germany where they will get to take part in our apprentice exchange programme in year three, an added bonus to add to an already valuable training experience.”

To apply, applicants should send an up to date CV and a cover letter specifying why they are interested in this apprenticeship to apprenticerecruit.lcc@liebherr.com.

Further documents such as academic results, training certificates, references, project details and awards etc. should also be included. The closing date for receipt of completed applications is March 25 next.

Do you really need to take supplements?

The question about taking supplements is something we often get asked during our nutrition consultations.

In an ideal world, we eat a diet rich in whole foods with a variety of different coloured fruits and veggies, quality protein and healthy fats. If this is the case, supplementation should not be necessary. However, we know in our ever-moving society, supplements can often be seen as convenient. The supplement industry is huge and continues to grow almost daily. Whether it be a multivitamin as a child, Vitamin C to fight off colds, protein powder to help hit our protein target, we’ve all likely taken some form of supplement in our life.

PROTEIN SUPPLEMENTS

One of the most popular amino acid supplements is Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs). We count one gram as one gram of protein. The theory behind these is that they help prevent muscle breakdown during intense exercise, however, does the research support this? Not all research has found positive benefits from a BCAA supplement. BCAAs will likely not have an impact on endurance, but a dose of six to 15 grams can help improve recovery following a hard training session.

However, if you are consuming a diet high in protein and consuming a variety of different protein sources, BCAAs are not necessary.

Creatine is made naturally in the body and can be found in meat and fish, or taken in higher doses as a supplement.

Hundreds of studies have been done on the effect of creatine supplements and much of these studies were done looking at anaerobic performance training. A little more than half of the studies report a positive effect on performance, while the remainder showed no real effect.

Collagen is growing in popularity and is one of the most abundant proteins in the human body making up one-third of the total body protein mass. If your diet is high in collagen-rich foods such as beef, pork, poultry, fish, fish skin and shellfish, a collagen supplement is not necessary.

Given that collagen is found in animal protein, it will not be appropriate if you are vegetarian or vegan. There are, however, vegan options available that are called "collagen boosters", although these do

Ukrainians in Ireland Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, gives an update on the supports available to Ukrainians coming to Ireland, those who have recently arrived in the country or for people who want information on how to support them.

“When Ukrainians, or people travelling from Ukraine, first arrive in Ireland they need to go to the reception centre at Dublin Airport and give their details," Deirdre said.

"This is where they will get the papers they need to show that they can stay in Ireland. The staff at the reception centre can also help them to get somewhere to stay and help with money.”

POWDERS, BARS AND READY-TO-DRINK SHAKES

Typically, these supplements will include whey protein, soy protein, casein or a mixture of a few different proteins. These supplement products are meant to provide a high concentration of protein to supplement usual food intake. Most of us can meet our daily protein requirements from food choices; however, protein supplements may benefit those who have a particularly high protein requirement and/or cannot consume enough protein through food. You should be cautious when relying on too many shakes or supplements in order to hit your protein targets as this can lead to increased hunger.

Shakes and supplements will not keep you as satiated as whole foods.

CARBOHYDRATE SUPPLEMENTS

Energy gels consist of simple sugars. Generally, these come in squeeze pouches and will contain 18-25g of carbohydrates.

So, do we need them? Energy gels are a convenient way to consume carbohydrates during prolonged endurance training, but they require around 350ml of water with each 25-gram carbohydrate gel pack. This looks like approximately six big gulps of water with half a gel pack every 15 to 30 minutes, which may not be convenient for everyone, particularly those who do not want to always carry a water bottle. If one does not drink enough water, they can end up with gelatinous goo in the stomach which pulls water from the blood-stream and can increase the risk of dehydration.

Citizens of Ukraine do not need a visa to travel to Ireland. They also do not need proof that they have a COVID-19 vaccine, or need to take a COVID-19 test before they arrive. If they do not have a current passport, they can use another form of identification to travel to Ireland for example; national ID card, expired passport or birth certificate. The Irish Government has asked airlines to accept these documents. Deirdre cautions that if you are travelling with family members who are not Ukrainian citizens, they may need a visa to come to Ireland.

If you are already in Ireland and you need to bring children here from Ukraine without their parents, you should contact the Department of Foreign Affairs at 01 4082000 and ask for their Ukraine Unit.

IMMIGRATION AND INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION

The EU, including Ireland, is using the Temporary Protection Directive. This means that Ukrainians are allowed to work and access services and benefits without making an application for international protection (refugee status). This applies to Ukrainian citizens and their families. It also applies to people who live in Ukraine and cannot return to their country of origin.

HOUSING AND ACCOMMODATION

You can get help with somewhere to stay at the reception centre at Dublin Airport.

If you are already in Ireland and you have nowhere to stay, you can email the International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) on ipasinbox@equality. gov.ie.

HEALTHCARE

You can access healthcare in Ireland. You can also apply for a medical card. This allows you to access healthcare services for free and get medicines for a reduced price. Contact your local CIC for more information and help with the application.

SOCIAL WELFARE

You can apply for Social Welfare (financial support) when you arrive in Ireland from Ukraine. You need to get a PPS number (an Irish social security number).

You can apply for a PPS number when you arrive in Dublin Airport. If, however, you are in Ireland already, you should go to your local Intreo centre or branch office. You should not apply online for your PPS number. The Irish Government has published Social Welfare information for people arriving from Ukraine under the Temporary Protection Directive. This information is also available in Ukrainian and in Russian. If you have children, you can get Child Benefit. This is paid to the parents or guardians of children aged under 16. It is also paid for children aged 16 and 17 in full-time education. You do not have to have proof that your 16 and 17-year-old children are in full-time education for the first two months after you arrive in Ireland.

WHAT CAN I DO IF I WANT TO HELP?

• PLEDGING ACCOMMODATION You can pledge accommodation on the Irish Red Cross website by registering your profile on the Register of Pledges on www.redcross.ie. Someone from the Irish Red Cross will contact you to get further details. The Irish Red Cross is working with the Irish Government to match people who have accommodation to offer, with refugees who have come to Ireland. You can pledge a spare room in your house or a completely vacant property. Pledges can be offered on a charitable basis or you can request to receive Housing Assistance Payment. Shared properties must include direct access to cooking facilities, shared or private bathrooms and private bedrooms of a reasonable size. All properties must be close to public transport and within a short commute to villages, towns or cities.

Tenancy agreements are entered into and the period requested is usually 12 to 18 months. Buy a seat to show solidarity for Ukraine Three top Irish charities have come together to call on the people of Ireland to take their seats at a Virtual Stadium of Peace which they have created to help donors to show their support and solidarity for the people of Ukraine.

The three humanitarian aid organisations, Adi Roche’s Chernobyl Children International, UNICEF Ireland, and the Irish Red Cross, are hoping to turn the virtual stadium green by the time the final whistle blows on Ireland’s closing Six Nations Championship game against Scotland this Saturday.

Anyone can make a donation to buy a seat at the Virtual Stadium of Peace and each donation will help to turn a piece of the stadium green. The virtual stadium is modelled on the design of the Aviva Stadium and the concept is to create a sea of green around a pitch sized Ukrainian flag.

Supporters all over the world can buy their seats by making a simple online donation of €5, €10, €20 or their preferred amount at www.stadiumofpeace.com.

The three organisations have also teamed up with over 7,000 pubs across Ireland to raise much needed funds during Ireland’s Six Nations Championship game against Scotland, thanks to the support of the Vintners Federation of Ireland and the Licensed Vintners Association. Kerry service marks 30 years This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre (KRSAC).

In early 1992 a group of committed individuals opened the centre to provide professional counselling, advocacy and support services to all survivors of sexual violence. This was the first-time survivors of sexual violence in Kerry had an opportunity to avail of a safe, compassionate counselling and support service.

The centre celebrated this milestone on Friday last with a candlelight walk through Tralee Town Park followed by refreshments, music and speeches in the Kerry Diocesan Youth Centre in Tralee.

"The centre was and remains unique," Manager Vera O'Leary from Killarney said. "We are the only specialised free professional service for sexual violence in Kerry. We are committed to healing the hurt of rape and sexual abuse. Our aim is to offer a safe and confidential space

where survivors/victims of all ages can be listened to and supported without shame or self-blame. We provide experienced professional counselling and supports to anyone who has experienced any sexually abusive incident at any time in their lives. This could be a recent or past experience of sexual abuse."

Vera outlined that they are constantly evaluating service provision whilst engaging with survivors on how service levels can be augmented and improved.

Yellowstone National Park is 2.2 million acres in size and it's believed that there are just six or seven wolverines in the entire park.

Former park ranger MacNeil Lyons is a guide for a private guiding company, Yellowstone Insight, based in Gardiner, Montana, at the north gate of Yellowstone National Park.

And it was while guiding a father and his 9-year-old daughter through their first experience of Yellowstone that the encounter with the ultra-rare wolverine occurred.

“About 11.38am, we were returning from the park’s Northeast Gate after an already amazing wildlife day,” Lyons said. “We rounded a corner heading westbound, and in the oncoming lane was a low-tothe-ground, dark animal loping away from us!”

Initially they thought it was a regular bear.

However, they stopped the car and spent three minutes observing it from about 200 yards while Lyons shot his photos with a 100-400mm zoom lens fully extended to 400mm as he feared getting closer would have caused the wolverine to run away.

"By its size, I assume that it is a healthy male,” Lyons explained. “The wolverine was definitely curious for a bit. It jumped up onto the snow berm adjacent to our lane twice and returned to the road to size us up as our tour vehicle was stopped, idle."

Antarctic ship with Crean connection found 107 years after it sank The ship central to Tom Crean’s story of bravery and resilience has been located in the Antarctic 107 years after it sank - hailing the find as a milestone in polar history.

Dingle church selected for heritage scheme St James’ Church and Graveyard, Dingle is one of five monuments in locations across Ireland that have been selected for inclusion in the 'Adopt a Monument Scheme 2022'.

The historic St James’ Church and Graveyard in Dingle is situated in the centre of the town and has been adopted by the 'Friends of St James’ Dingle.

They wish to conserve the church and graveyard to ensure that it can continue to be a spiritual and cultural centre for many years to come.

The scheme offers communities expertise, mentoring and support to help them to care for their local heritage. Following a call for applications in September 2021, more than 40 community groups applied to adopt a monument in their locality.

The five sites were chosen following a selection process that also involved the National Monuments Service, the Discovery Programme, a community archaeologist, and Abarta Heritage.

The sites included in this year’s scheme

are an early medieval church and cross at Killaghtee in Co Donegal, which overlooks the Atlantic; a ringfort in Baltimore, West Cork, which is perched above Church Strand Bay; Dunmanogue Church and Graveyard in Kildare; St James’ Church in Dingle (home to the Other Voices Music Festival), and an Anglo-Norman motte castle in the heart of Inniskeen, Co Monaghan.

“We received more than 40 applications from energized community groups across Ireland. Each of the sites is unique and represents important aspects of Ireland’s heritage. We are really looking forward to working with the communities to uncover the stories of their sites,” said Chief Executive of the Heritage Council, Virginia Teehan, said.

The 'Adopt a Monument Scheme' is an initiative of The Heritage Council and is managed by Abarta Heritage. Support in surveying and investigation work for several sites will be provided by the Discovery Programme, which is the State’s archaeological research institute.

The Endurance sank in 1915 while explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew were attempting to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic.

The Endurance become stuck in ice as the 28-man crew made their way towards Vahsel Bay – the starting point of their land expedition. It sank in October 1915 forcing Shackleton and his six-man crew, which included Annascaul’s Tom Crean on to lifeboats. They ended up on uninhabited Elephant Island where after months of living in makeshift camps Shackleton decided to steer one of the lifeboats towards the whaling station at South Georgia 1,300km away.

Crean was included in the lifeboat crew that made the journey – one that is listed amongst the greatest feats of human endurance ever.

On arrival at the northern coast of South Georgia three of the crew, including Crean and Shackleton faced a 46km hike over uncharted territory to the whaling station at Stromness where the crew were able to organise a rescue party for the remaining men stranded on Elephant Island.

Some eight weeks after the lifeboat left Elephant Island the crew returned and rescued everyone without the loss of life.

The ship had not been seen since it went down in the Weddell Sea in 1915, and in February the Endurance22 Expedition left Cape Town, South Africa, on a mission to find it.

"The wreck is coherent, in an astonishing state of preservation. The Antarctic seabed does not have any wood eating micro-organisms, the water has the clarity of distilled water. We were able to film the wreck in super high definition. The results are magical,” historian and broadcaster, Dan Snow, tweeted.

St Patrick’s Day celebrated in London The annual St Patrick’s Day festival made a welcome return to London on Sunday.

Traditionally run on the Sunday before the big day itself, the London event was sidelined for the last two years as a result of the pandemic.

Now in its 19th year, the Mayor’s annual shindig has become a highlight of London’s cultural calendar. This year’s theme was 'Coming Back Together', as Londoners and visitors unite in celebrating the great contributions Irish people have made to the city.

St Patrick’s Day is the perfect opportunity

to celebrate the enduring strength of relationships between the British and Irish.

Key workers from across London were the Grand Marshals at the event, in recognition of their tireless work during the pandemic.

More than 50,000 people joined the annual procession of Irish marching bands, dance troupes and pageantry.

This year saw the return of the popular giant St Patrick and the Garda band from Dublin.

The parade started at Hyde Park Corner, then travelled through Piccadilly, St James’s Street, Pall Mall, Cockspur Street and Whitehall.

The action then moved to Trafalgar Square where host Gemma Bradley introduced a world-class line-up, in partnership with the London Irish Centre.

Alongside the main stage, International Chef of the Year 2019, Anna Haugh ran food demos. There was also children’s workshops featuring camogie games, medal making and face painting, and a great selection of food and drinks stalls.

And if that’s not enough, there were a number of events happening across London all week including busking in the Underground to a three-day film festival by Irish Film London.

An apprenticeship combines learning in an education and training institution with work-based learning with an employer, in a company or organisation.

At least 50% of apprenticeship learning is completed in the workplace and apprenticeships lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships are open to school leavers, mature learners, career changers, women and men with diverse backgrounds, talents, skills and abilities. They are ideally suited to individuals who want to learn practical and technical skills and who prefer learning-by-doing. Recent figures show that the number of people involved in apprenticeship training increased to 24,212 in 2021, with a record 8,607 new registrations in that year.

TYPES OF APPRENTICESHIPS

Currently there are 62 different apprenticeships available across multiple sectors, with 17 more in development and because they are industry-led, apprentices gain the most up to date and relevant skills for the jobs market. Apprentices ‘earn while they learn’ – they have an employment contract and are paid a training allowance or salary for the duration of their apprenticeship training. Most people are familiar with the craft apprenticeships often referred to as the ‘trades’. There are 25 of them categorised under motor, electrical, construction and engineering. In each case they last approximately four years and are made up of seven phases which alternate between on-the-job training with the employer and off-thejob training which generally takes place in an Education and Training Board (ETB) Training Centre or an Institute of Technology. In 2016 a number of ‘new’ apprenticeships were developed across 15 different industry sectors including finance, ICT, biopharma, arboriculture, hairdressing, hospitality and food, insurance, logistics, property services, recruitment and sales. The ‘off-the-job’ aspect of training in these programmes can vary between day/block releases, online and blended learning. Salaries for those starting off in these apprenticeships start at approximately €18,000.

One such example is the IFS (International Financial Services) apprenticeships which offer two year programmes for individuals who have an interest in pursuing a career in the Financial Services sector. Repot your Shamrock and watch it grow!

Seamair óg, or Shamrock, must surely be our featured plant this week.

Until last year, I had never taken much notice of Shamrock as a plant, however, in a fit of curiosity I bought little live Shamrock plants in a number of outlets to see what they would actually grow into.

We all know the religious story behind St Patrick and the little three leaved plant, but I was curious to know whether there is one specific plant which equates to Shamrock. After doing some research, I have concluded that it could have been any of a number of different plants which St Patrick held in his hand.

The word Shamrock derives from the Irish ‘seamair' meaning clover, and ‘óg' meaning young. The most common clovers in this country would be white clover, Trifolium repens, and meadow trefoil, or Trifolium dubium. However, red clover, or Trifolium pratense, is also a contender! One of the oldest herbal books, Gerard's Herbal, published in 1597 identified Irish Shamrock to be meadow trefoil, while the Irish botanist, Caleb Threlkeld, identified it as white field clover in 1726.

MEADOW PLANTING

Whichever one St Patrick might have used, it is clear to me that the growers

of Shamrock are still not in agreement which it was either! Out of 10 plants I bought last year, I have three meadow trefoil, which are the prettiest green, and flower yellow. These are ideal for meadow planting as insects love them.

I have one red clover which grows to a height of 30cm and is ideal in ditches and wild areas. I have one Persian clover, a slightly soft, tall, hairy plant with carmine coloured flowers. This is often included in wildflower mixtures as it is pretty and has a long flowering season.

It is the least hardy of these clovers.

I ended up with two oxalis which are wood sorrel, and finally three white clover. White clover is an ideal companion plant to lawn grass and I would encourage anyone setting lawn seed to include it in their seed mix. White clover stays low and can be mown along with the grass. It has white flowers, which are a rich source of nectar. It is not particularly invasive, and will not take over the lawn. It does however benefit your grass greatly by ‘setting' nitrogen, thus making nitrogen available to the grass, making it richer, stronger and greener.

This also means you do not need to fertilise your lawn as much.

So, if you have bought a pot of Shamrock, be sure to repot it and let it grow a little, then find it a nice spot in your garden, because, regardless of its historical accuracy, all Shamrock has great merit!

Unused or out of date medicine can pose a serious danger in the home.

Over the next few weeks, Kerry County Council, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, together with Cork City Council and Cork County Council are asking the public to use a free service to dispose of their medications safely.

The ‘Dispose of Unused Medicines Properly’ (DUMP) campaign is running from this week until this Friday April 22 with almost all pharmacies in Kerry and Cork taking part. This campaign allows the public to bring unused or out of date medicines to participating pharmacies to ensure that they are disposed of properly. The DUMP campaign has run successfully in both countries since 2007. In 2018, more than 280 bins, containing more than four tonnes of medicines, were safely disposed of as part of this important campaign.

Unused or out-of-date medicines can build up in the home for a variety of reasons. Storing these medications long-term is not safe and can result in accidental poisonings, intentional overdose, inappropriate sharing of medicines and environmental damage.

ACCIDENTAL POISONINGS In 2020, the National Poisons Information Centre in Beaumont Hospital received 11,687 enquiries involving poisoning. Over two thirds of these involved children and adolescents (67%) and most poisonings took place in the home (93%).

Intentional overdose In 2019, the National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF) recorded 7,763 hospital presentations due to intentional overdose of prescription or overthe-counter medications. Paracetamol was the drug most commonly taken in overdose followed by a range of prescription medications. Between 2008 and 2017 the National Drug-Related Deaths Index (NDRDI) recorded 3,715 poisoning deaths. Opioids or painkiller medications were most commonly involved in these deaths.

INAPPROPRIATE SHARING OF MEDICINES It is critical that medicines are taken as directed by the person for whom they were prescribed and that they are not shared. Sharing medications is dangerous and can result in illness mistreatment, consumption of incorrect dosages of medications, misuse of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance and unforeseen physical illness and side effects.

ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE Unwanted medicines are often inappropriately disposed of by being dumped with other household waste, flushed down the toilet or poured down the sink. These methods of disposal can seriously harm the environment with products ending up in landfill, permeating the soil and entering our food chain and water supply.

Nissan goes green for local soccer The Football Association of Ireland’s Regional High Performance Coach for Kerry, Darren Aherne, was one of the first to take delivery of the 100% electric Nissan LEAF.

It's all part of a new green initiative which is helping soccer's governing body reduce its carbon footprint.

FAI employees travel thousands of kilometres across the country each year and their transition to a more sustainable fleet is being driven by Nissan in its role as Official Vehicle Partner of the Football Association of Ireland.

The award-winning Nissan LEAF has been one of Ireland’s best-selling EVs for more than a decade. It has been at the

centre of Nissan’s charge towards electrification with a range of vehicles that also includes the all-new mild hybrid Nissan Qashqai and the new Nissan Ariya electric coupé crossover.

Fassbender’s Le Mans dream to become a reality Hollywood actor and motor racing driver Michael Fassbender is set to realise his lifelong ambition of contesting the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

The Fossa man has been gearing up for his participation in the world’s most-famous endurance race for years.

Since 2020 Fassbender has been racing in the European Le Mans Series, the recognised feeder championship to Le Mans, with Team Proton Competition.

He is also entered in this year’s European Le Mans Series which gets underway in Imola, Italy on May 15 and that is his only scheduled appearance in a motor race before the June 11 and 12 Le Mans meeting.

While his participation in next June's 24 hour race will be his first attempt at the twice around the clock race, it won’t be his first time racing at the famous La Sarthe track in the North West of France.

Back in 2020 the Hollywood star competed as the official VIP driver in the Mobil 1 Porsche Supercup support race that served as one of the curtain raisers for the main event.

On that occasion he drove a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup campaigned by Porsche AG and crossed the finish line in 38th place in the 53-strong field.

The goal of the actor, who has been nominated for an Oscar several times, has always been to contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche 911 RSR. “I found it exciting to drive here for the first time. It rained before the race, so the track was really slippery. I spun on the formation lap, but that was a wakeup call for the race. I simply need a lot of track time to realise my dream of competing here with Porsche next year,” he said after his 2020 race.

However, the pandemic stopped him from making the step last season.

Veteran car club first to appoint Youth Officer Kingdom Veteran Vintage and Classic Car Club (KVVCCC) has become the first organisation in Ireland of its kind to appoint a Youth Officer.

At the club’s recent Annual General Meeting Alan Fitzell from Lisselton was appointed to this new role to protect the future of the club. KVVCCC is the biggest car club in Kerry and the only one affiliated to the national federation for such clubs. It was founded in 1979 and continues to grow and expand to this day. The oldest car in the club is a 1922 Peugeot but there's a growing number of owners of modern classics from the 1980s and 1990s on the club’s books too.

Members felt that by appointing a Youth Officer the club would be able to protect its future by encouraging the next generation of classic car enthusiasts to get

more involved in activities.

A life-long Ford fan, he owns a 1956 Ford Anglia. “We have a lot of younger members that join and we don’t see them too much afterwards,” he said. “Part of my role is to get these members to attend more shows and runs and support some of the charity events. We also welcome new members.”

The full committee elected are: President Francie Cantillon; Chair Tony Hehir; ViceChair Joe O’Sullivan; Secretary Garrett Foley; Treasurers George Glover and Aine Doyle; Youth Officer Alan Fitzell; Club Merchandise Lukas and Sylwia Warcaba; Webmaster Chris Foley and Richard Bono who is entering his 20th year on the committee.

The club is preparing for its annual Ring of Kerry Run which will take place in May.

Back in a bear market Investors' wounds deepened last week as the S&P 500 fell nearly 3%, declining for the fourth week out of the past five.

The NASDAQ precipitous decline continued into Monday, putting the techbased index into bear-market territory, as it fell more than 20.0% below a recent high set in November. While this drop may seem alarming, the NASDAQ has compounded at 21% a year for the last five years despite experiencing three bear markets in the past five years.

As we remember our beautiful mother Mary Theresa on her first anniversary. We would like to thank all our family, friends and neighbours for their continuous support throughout the most difficult year of our lives. We would like to express a heartfelt thank you to all the people who sent Mass cards and messages. For all the phone calls and condolences on RIP and everyone who sent food during the funeral.Even though a lot of people couldn’t be with us due to the Covid restrictions the biggest comfort of all was seeing the turnout of people who stood out to pay their respects on mom’s final journey to her resting place. To Fr.Teddy Linehan ,Fr.Pat O’Donnell ,Fr Pat McCarthy and Donie O’Connor (sacristan) for celebrating mom’s funeral mass, and Tim Gleeson for the music. You were a great support during those difficult days.

We would also like to thank Sean O’Mahony for his care and attention during the funeral.

Mom was cared for with such kindness and compassion in the Mercy Hospital Cork, by oncologist Dr. Seamus O’Reilly and his team on St Theresa’s and St Bridget’s ward. We will be forever grateful for the care and support she received on her final days.

As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our sincere gratitude and appreciation.

The family of Marie O’Connor as we lovingly remember her on her first anniversary, wish to express our gratitude and thanks to all who sympathised with us on our sad loss. It is a big day for St Brendan’s College today (Thursday) as they will contest the Hogan Cup final v Naas CBS at Croke Park.

We wish all the players, management team and the parents/supporters the best of luck in this eagerly awaited decider.

On the way to the final Naas CBS have been the form team, especially in the recent All-Ireland semi-final where they trounced St Jarlath’s, Tuam, the leading college in Hogan Cup victories.

Jarlath’s have been by far the most successful team - winning the Hogan Cup on 12 occasions. Strangely enough Kerry colleges have fared poorly overall since the Cup was introduced in 1946. It is named after Brother Thomas Hogan, not the man who gave his name to the Hogan Stand. That was Michael Hogan and you guessed it, Thomas and Mi-

chael were brothers.

The Sem won the cup on four occasions, the first in 1969 and later in 1992, 2016 and in 2017.

Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, Daingean Uí Chúis won in 2014 and again in 2015.

Intermediate School Killorglin won their only title in 1996 as did Coláiste na Sceilge (2009).

The 2019 winners were St Michael’s College, Enniskillen and the competition was deferred since then due to COVID restrictions.

FREWEN CUP

St Brendan’s are very keen to lift the trophy for 2022. Going back two years they were Munster champions in the Frewen Cup U16 and a half and were due to play St Pat’s, Navan in the All-Ireland semi-final. TV pundit Colm O’Rourke is principal of that school. Cían McMahon was captain of that Frewen team, so he will be hell bent on lifting the Hogan Cup on the Hogan Stand today.

It is really almost the same cohort of players who are now bidding for glory.

GREAT BATTLERS

Brendan’s have battled very bravely to reach this final. They were pushed to the limit in most games including that late winner especially against Coláiste na Sceilge. They had to dig deep in the semi-final against St Mary’s Magherafelt, Derry.

The sides were level going into time added on. Who would blink, not so the Sem who drove on with two late glorious points and a deserved passage to the final.

INJURIES

Luke Crowley has been in and out of the team with a back injury during this campaign. He came on at the three-quarter stage in Mayo and kicked two valuable points.

He is a former Kerry minor in hurling and in football and is a current member of Declan O’Sullivan’s Kerry U20 squad. Team management and supporters will be hoping that all players will be available and fit to start including the versatile Glenflesk man Luke Crowley.

U16 rugby girls set for Munster final The Killarney U16 girls rugby squad have booked their place in the Munster final thanks to a huge performance at the weekend.

They kept up their recent good form to win a very closely contested Munster Cup semi-final in Ennis on Sunday.

Having defeated Ennis in the league final in January both teams knew it was going to be a tough battle and that it was from the very start of the game.

Killarney started the game very well and with some clever interplay by both backs and forwards a good scoring opportunity was created for the flying Killarney winger Niamh Dorian, but a last ditch Ennis tackle just prevented the winger from registering the first points of the game.

After a series of good strong runs by second-row Joanne O’Keefe and Ava O’Malley, eventually Ella Guerin forced her way over the line for the first score of the game.

Ennis asked a lot of questions of the Killarney defence, but just couldn’t find a way through a resolute Killarney.

Just before half-time the Ennis flyhalf was very close to equalising, but a brave tackle by the Killarney skipper Fia

Whelan prevented her opposite number from scoring.

In the second half Killarney started to make their dominance pay off.

The Killarney centre Bronagh Dorian made a superb break and was stopped close to the Ennis line.

Next up Whelan made a fantastic break and again the last line of the Ennis defence made a great try saving tackle.

Still leading by only five points, Killarney knew the importance of scoring next, and they duly did.

Holly O’Sullivan gathered a loose Ennis clearance and showed the Ennis defence a clean pair of heels to go over for an outstanding try, which wasn’t converted.

Killarney finished the game very strong with their replacements Jess O’Sullivan, Isabelle O’Leary and Grainne Kennedy all making telling contributions to a very solid team performance.

“This team is getting better and better as the season goes on, their defensive effort was just phenomenal, with none

of the girls taking a back seat from the first minute to the last, their appetite for work was brilliant,” said head coach Diarmuid O’Malley.

“The club is building something very special with the pipeline of girls coming through. We now have a Munster Cup final against Shannon to look forward to. We will be doing everything we can to ensure we do the league and cup double, but we will require another step-up to make that dream a reality.”

HOW GOOD ARE NAAS CBS?

I enquired from a friend in Naas very close to the Sem’s opponents.

“Naas are very strong, especially down the middle. They just edged out Maynooth by one point in the Leinster final. They have never won the Hogan Cup and were runners up last time out.”

I presume the CBS has a high student enrolment considering the population of Naas, effectively a satellite town of the over populated Dublin.

“They have in the region of 1,000 students (The Sem have up to 800) and what’s more they have head-hunted good players from Eadestown, Straffan, Rajendra, Sallins and Two Mile House, all well outside their catchment area.”

St Flannan’s College, Ennis know all about that strategy. They lead the way with 21 Harty Cup hurling titles strengthened by young good hurlers from neighbouring Tipperary, Limerick and Galway.

It will be a titanic battle for the Sem to bridge that gap since their last Hogan Cup victory in 2017 pitted against a Naas CBS side bidding for their first ever such title. However, spurred on by the pandemic hiatus and their never say die spirit, particularly in the closing stages with the outcome on the balance, this Brendan’s team will battle to the end. Hopefully, they will produce the goods today (St Patrick’s Day).

FINAL BOUND: The Killarney Rugby Club’s U16 girls team are on their way to a Munster Final after beating Ennis at the weekend.

Paul Shefflin RIP The Shefflin name is synonymous with greatness and excellence in hurling. King Henry, the 43-yearold current manager of Galway hurlers, holder of a record 10 All-Ireland medals with his native Kilkenny and 11 All Stars was a very sad man last week, when he laid his brother to rest in Ballyhale.

Paul (41) was also an accomplished hurler. He played for over 20 years, won three All-Ireland medals at half back with Kilkenny and several All-Ireland club medals with Ballyhale Shamrocks, who lead the way as the most successful club winning eight All-Ireland club titles.

He also won a Fitzgibbon Cup medal alongside Henry for the Waterford Insti-

tute of Technology in 1999. Paul went for his customary run last week and unfortunately he never came home alive to his wife and young family. His home club tweeted a tribute to Paul.

"Paul was an unbelievable player and won many county championships (6) and club All-Irelands wearing the jersey he loved. He was also a former senior club treasurer and was currently involved in coaching underage teams" Killarney connection Paul’s wife Aoife is daughter of Margaret and Denis McCarthy, Kenmare. Denis is a retired PE teacher from Killarney Community College and well-known in Kenmare GAA circles.

He is also a former Kerry senior football selector.

Kerry are odds on to win the league final Is he a lucky manager or what? I think he is. Jack O’Connor continued his luck as a winning manager with Kerry at rain-lashed Tralee on Saturday last, where they were fortunate to collect both league points as David Clifford slotted a close-in free well into the six-minute injury time to win 1-12 to 0-13. | By Eamonn Fitzgerald Kerry rode their luck to get out of Newbridge with an unlikely draw in the opening round of the league and even though Kerry were leaders all the way in Tralee, Mayo clawed it back to level in injury time.

The impetus was with Mayo when Ryan O’Donoghue levelled, but they couldn’t kick on and Jack’s luck prevailed once more. Micheál Burns was on the field for just two minutes when he sent an inch-perfect foot pass on to Stephen O’Brien who was needlessly fouled close to the Mayo goal by, who else, but the luckless Aidan O’Shea. No need for a silly foul but it allowed David Clifford to kick the winning point and stretch Jack’s unbeaten run this season.

LUCK IS NOT ENOUGH

Luck is one thing, but it is never enough to produce a title-winning team. A good manager with a vision of team play and a plan is also needed.

Then he has to manage the best players

to execute that winning formula. This team is shaping up well, as I, in a recent column, indicated the starting 15 for the championship and the reasons why the Kerry management has pinned down 11 of the starting 15 for May 7 and hopefully lifting the Sam Maguire on July 23.

THE SWAGGER

What impresses me most about Kerry 2022 under the management and leadership of O’Connor is that they now play with authority. Every ball is contested and none of the opposition goes unchallenged for the ball. Kerry are playing with a winning swagger and are not bossed about by any opposition. They call the shots and force the opposition into retreating. Kerry move the ball quickly, except in the opening quarter against Mayo.

Yes, they engage in short passing when it is necessary, but it is the mantra to ‘give and go’. The player’s role does not end with a pass to his colleague. He must also drive forward creating options for the ball carrier and the overall play pattern is the quick kickball sent accurately to the

best-placed colleague invariably turning defence into an attack.

KERRY'S SKILL SET

Kerry’s skill set is very good and it isn’t all about David Clifford. All of the basics are present in this Kerry team and they play as a team. Each one knows what his teammate is doing and what he is likely to do.

Topping it all is the work ethic. There is no place on Jack’s team for a slacker. Hard graft and skill will deliver match-winning scores.

WINNING CAMEO

Just one cameo from last Saturday’s game illustrates the point.

Tony Brosnan was over 50 metres from the Mayo goal when he did very well to contest a slippery ball among two.

MAYO DEFENDERS

But he gripped the ball securely with his back to the goal, executed the necessary double shimmy to outfox the two Mayo men, released the ball to the on-running David Clifford and Adrian Spillane.

His job was not done yet. He sprinted forward to pick up a difficult enough pass and rifled the net for the only goal of the game.

It came early, but it was still the decisive score. That goal separated the sides as Mayo were in catch-up mode thereafter.

17.03.2022 Fair deuce to Mayo they didn’t buckle thanks in large to their midfield supremacy of Jordan Flynn and the excellent Matthew Ruane. They held the upper hand of Na Gaeil duo Diarmuid O’Connor and Jack Barry.

Free taker Rory O'Donoghue was also impressed for Mayo.

NO GIVEAWAY FREES

While I liked much of what Kerry did and how they did it. I wasn’t happy with the result of the style of tackling. Yes, the opposition must be tackled throughout the field but not at the expense of giving away frees. Most counties have score-getting specialist free-takers. Conceding a free within 50 metres of the goal is handing a point to Seánie O’Shea, Dean Rock et al.

Kerry were rightly whistled for unfair tackles gifting O’Donoghue six points.

Add in a converted ‘45’ by goalkeeper Rob Hennelly and those seven points put Mayo in a game which Kerry should have won with plenty to spare.

In contrast, Mayo rarely fouled (apart from O’Shea) and Kerry only got four points from scoreable frees.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

A great display by Kerry and I feel that Jack has 12 of the championship starting 15 sorted. Two league matches to go and a perfect finish away to Armagh and at home to Tyrone the All-Ireland champions on March 27 in Fitzgerald Stadium to look forward to.

Kerry are odds-on to win the league final.

YOUTUBE PUNDITS:

The Micah and Roy dynamic I had to laugh at the fallout from the clip of Micah Richards laughing at Roy Keane. I didn’t laugh as hard as Micah Richards did, granted. Only Micah Richards can laugh that hard. Nevertheless, I was amused. | By Adam Moynihan City brushed United aside in the most recent derby and afterwards Keane launched into one of his trademark tirades about honesty of effort. It was a pained, two-and-a-half-minute critique of his former club, and you could tell that he was really annoyed because his voice reached that special octave that only irritated Corkonians can reach.

After a brief moment of dead air, Richards responded with his trademark laugh - an impossibly consistent cackle that has charmed a multitude of viewers ever since he became a regular fixture of Sky’s football coverage.

Keane branded Richards as “childish” and the ex-City players’ antics were roundly criticised online. Miguel Delaney, the chief football writer for the Independent, described Richards’ conduct as “a touch disrespectful”.

I can see where observers like Delaney

are coming from. One pundit is giving a serious assessment and the other pundit responds by laughing in his face. It’s not exactly professional, is it?

But if I was in Micah Richards’ position last week, trawling through all those negative tweets, I’d be shouting, “is this not why you are here?” Or rather, “is this not why I am here?”

Let’s be honest about it: Richards isn’t being kept on the books purely because of his analysis. In fact, he really doesn’t seem to offer much analysis at all. Who knows, maybe he has a lot more to say but he just isn’t being pushed in the right direction?

Judging by what we’re seeing on screen, he appears to be employed as Keane’s comedic sidekick. Keane seethes. Richards pokes fun. Rinse.

Repeat. In fairness to Richards, Keane and Sky, the routine has been working for them.

Keane’s on-screen persona is that of an

aggressively cynical, at-odds-with-theworld, misanthrope. The type of guy who sits alone at the corner of the bar and is avoided by everyone.

Richards, meanwhile, is the one lad in the group who isn’t afraid to take the mick out of him. He draws a smile from the grouch, everyone laughs, and the two become unlikely mates. That’s basically the winning formula that Sky have stumbled upon, and that’s why the public outcry over the most recent clip is funny to me.

Of course, the aforementioned ‘winning formula’ refers to online engagement rather than educational, award-winning punditry. Views on Keane-Richards videos often number in the millions but in terms of being informative and providing expert analysis, their efforts pale in comparison to those of Sky’s other dynamic duo. Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher generate debate. Keane and Richards generate content.

For all his achievements in the game, Keane’s input as a pundit invariably revolves around footballers not working hard enough. He’s not wrong when he calls out this current United team for their lack of application but, broadly

speaking, he seems to think that almost every goal is avoidable if the defender simply has the “desire” to close down the shot. If that were the case then you’d have to ask why anyone bothers with silly things like coaching or tactics or formations.

His stick about having to “go out and do it” is well worn by this stage. He even has his own catchphrase: “That’s your job”. There must be times when he feels like Bart Simpson sitting at the back of Mrs Krabappel’s classroom. Say the line, Roy! That being said, we all still enjoy it when Roy Keane goes on a rant because who doesn’t love it? And a lot of people will continue to enjoy Micah Richards laughing at the grumpy old man at the corner of the bar.

Together the pair are a massive asset to Sky because of their ability to go viral. They produced another certified hit, and they will undoubtedly produce more hits in the future.

There’s nothing wrong with it but, ultimately, they are YouTube pundits for the YouTube generation.

As a great man once said, “that’s showbiz, baby”.

Bumper Killarney entry for West Cork Rally The West Cork Rally returns this weekend after a two-year hiatus and the traditional St Patrick’s Weekend event always attracts a strong local entry.

This year’s Clonakilty-based rally is no exception with over 20 locals entered.

Killarney and District Motor Club member Liam Moynihan continues his successful partnership with Cathan McCourt. The Ford Fiesta crew are the fifth seeds after taking fourth place on last month’s Galway International Rally.

Daniel Cronin and Shane Buckley start at seven in their second outing in their new Volkswagen Polo R5. They finished fifth in Galway last month.

Killarney Historic Rally Modified category winner Rob Duggan will make his first start of the season. He will have a new co-driver for the weekend. Regular partner Ger Conway is unavailable due to work commitments so John Falvey will deputise.

Duggan’s Agahdoe neighbour Sean Murphy and his Rathmore co-driver Sean Collins are another Ford Escort crew on the 140-strong entry list. A right rear puncture and clutch problems were just some of the issues they had to contend with on their way to

There are two Killarney crews entered in the Junior rally which runs over the Sunday stages.

Jason Farrell (Muckross) and Donagh Crowley (Rathmore) share a Honda Civic and newcomers Gary Healy (Clonkeen) and Kevin Doherty (Killarney) compete in a similar machine.

Jordan and Kennelly bring home the silver | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Valley Athletic Club took home two silver medals in the high jump category in Athlone over the weekend.

Jordan Lee put in his best performance of the year so far with his 1.90-metre jump taking second place in the Under 23 class at the Irish Life Health National Junior and Under 23 Championships.

Clubmate Ciara Kennelly also finished in second place in her high-jump competition, taking a silver medal on a jump of 1.70m.

Also competing for Killarney Valley was Sam Griffin who was unlucky to make the final of the junior long jump, missing out on a top-eight spot by just a few centimetres.

Killarney Valley had two other competitors in the junior race sprints section.

Jason Lee represented the club in the 60-metre and John O’Connor was in action over the longer distance of 200 metres but they were both outside of the qualifying times for the final.

Jack O’Leary (Gneeveguilla) did make the final of the Junior 800m finishing in eighth place in a time of 2m 07s.

Meanwhile the Irish Life Health National Schools Cross Country Finals took place in Mallusk Playing Fields, near Belfast on Saturday.

There was a large contingent from St Brendan’s College. Oisin Lynch finished 26th in the Intermediate Boys category while Ted O’Gorman came home in 60th place. The combined school team finished eighth.

| By David Ahern A thrilling finish to a very entertaining National League Division 1 game saw the Killarney Cougars season finish on a high note to overcome IT Carlow at the Presentation Gym on Saturday evening.

As both teams were going all out for the win it produced great entertainment with Cougars having to come from behind in the last quarter having led for most of the game.

The visitors were quickly on the board to lead 4-0 with Nate Shafer and Armand Vailkuls on target but two quick scores had Cougars in front with a two and a big three pointer by Mark O'Shea to excite the home support.

Cougars took the quarter 17-12 with three pointers by Rich Dunham and Tommy Bowler. As Cougars grew in confidence a massive second quarter saw the team’s offence play sharing 54 points with Cougars holding the advantage 47-36 with Conor Flynn and Rich Dunham scoring some big scores in an exciting spell.

The visitors continued their revival early in the final quarter as IT Carlow had good momentum to take the lead with Mateo Plaza Reino hitting three big three-pointers after coming off the bench.

Cougars were struggling with foul trouble

leading to Andrew Fitzgerald and Patrick O'Regan all leaving the game with five fouls. But the big home support played its part as Cougars regrouped and responded with the introduction of Jack Lynch who added with a big basket to give new energy to the team and begin the revival.

Two further scores by Mark O’Shea restored the Cougar's lead.

The game was on the line with both sides going for the win. The sides were tied again at 76 each with just over two minutes remaining, but Cougars were to finish the stronger in the closing stages with a Most Valued Player performance by Rich Dunham who was in top form with eighth points.

IT Carlow had no answer as Cougars took the win with a thrilling finish to complete the season on a good run of form at the Presentation Gym. The Cougars finish the season with the team recording three consecutive home wins.

IT Carlow are the Conference runners up which presented a tough challenge which the Cougars met with one of their best performances. The club can now look forward to next season with confidence.

Best for Cougars on this occasion were Conor Flynn, Jack Lynch, Mark O'Shea and Rich Dunham with American Nate Shafer in top form for the visitors.

Playing on the Friday night of the last weekend of the regular season the Lakers knew that only a win would keep them in the playoff conversation and they set upon their task with great gusto and determination. In a direct opposite to last weekend's victory over Killarney Cougars, everything the Lakers touched turned to gold and the normally clinical Midlanders were left reeling as they found themselves on the back foot straight from the tip off.

Coach Lee had the added luxury of running his bench and Lorcan Keane and Daniel Carroll got some well-deserved court time as Bencic hit another three to contribute a season high 18 points.

The game was also notable for the inclusion of the latest young guns from the St Paul's Academy as teenagers Brian and TJ O'Sullivan and Eoin Carroll were part of the team's match day plans.

With both Limerick sides, the Celtics and the Eagles, occupying third and fourth place this win saw the Lakers leapfrog, albeit temporarily, into a playoff berth. The Eagles had a routine win over Waterford IT Vikings on Saturday evening and this secured their place in the playoffs.

PLAYOFF QUALIFICATION

So all was down to the Limerick Celtics/ Fr Matthews clash. The Cork side knew a comprehensive win would swing the playoff odds in their favour and they duly obliged with a 90-76 victory. What this meant was Scotts Lakers, Limerick Celtics

and Fr Matthews were all tied in the table.

The Lakers agonisingly came up short with Fr Matthews clinching the final playoff berth by a hair's breadth. This meant huge disappointment for the Lakers but they can look back on their season with great satisfaction.

For a side whose average age was 22, they defeated every team in the conference bar one, UCC Blue Demons, and remained unbeaten at home in the final three months of the season.

When the club decided to embark on a policy of nurturing young talent it was to lay a foundation and certainly those young players now belong in National League Basketball. This season has been a huge stepping stone for the club and the support from the people of Killarney is very much appreciated. Scotts Lakers are one of the best supported teams in the whole country and this gives the young squad a huge boost.

Coach Jarlath Lee had two hats on after the weekend's action.

"Obviously we didn't make the playoffs, it was always the team's goal to make it.

The whole team is gutted but I am super happy the way we finished the season."

On the Carlow win he added "We played a complete game and we showed our quality in a dominant first half display and the experience we have picked up all season to kill the game off. Our goal was to be competitive this year but next season we will be pushing for the top of the league.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: This year's Senior Men's Player of the Year is Danny Sheahan. 2021 wasn't a great year for our senior team but very often it's during the roughest storm that you find your strongest anchor. Danny was ever present in the defence and throughout the year he put in a series of combative performances. Brian Kelly in goal can attest to the protection Danny gives while the other five defenders are always kept on their toes by the strong and authoritative full back. Often tasked with marking the oppositions best forwards, Danny went toe to toe with three All Stars, namely Tommy Walsh, Paul Geaney and Kieran Donaghy, and never wilted on any of those battles. As the senior team look to bounce back to the top table there is no doubting that Danny will once again be to the fore.

YOUNG PLAYER OF THE YEAR: The winner of the Jim Trant Trophy for Young Player of the Year made huge strides in 2021. It started with the delayed 2020 All-Ireland Minor Championship where Will Shine was an integral part of the Kerry forward line that agonisingly lost out in the final by the bare minimum to Derry. Will then went on to establish himself in the Club Senior panel where his performances belied his teenage years and in the latter stages of the year he was called up to the Kerry U20 panel.

As if that wasn't enough he is one of the big driving forces behind St Brendan’s path to the Hogan Cup Final which will be played today (Thursday). A Man of the Match performance in the Corn Ui Mhuiri Final win over Tralee CBS, Will is looked upon as being a real prospect in the future.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Legion’s Senior Men kick off their County League campaign belatedly with the Round 1 game against Kerins O'Rahillys on 25 in Direen with a 7.30pm throw in.

Our Senior Ladies are away to Listowel on Sunday in their opening round game in the Donal Curtin Cup with a 12 noon throw in.

MEMBERS MEETING: On Thursday March 10 the club hosted a very constructive and informative members meeting which was well attended. David Randles chaired an open discussion on all club matters and it is intended to run these meetings in a bi-monthly manner.

Fossa GAA TRIBUTE: Fossa GAA Club would like to wish Michelle Cooper Galvin a long and happy retirement. She served as Fossa PRO from 1996 to 2008. Muckross Rowing Club HEAD OF THE RIVER: It has been a long hiatus for the Muckross Head of the River event, but the current weather forecast suggests that we are in for a great day of rowing on Saturday at the National Rowing Centre in Farran, Cork. The

Muckross Head of the River has received over 360 entries from 17 rowing clubs across three provinces. This weekend will see rowers converge for the 3km time trial for the first time since December 2018. Weather conditions forced the cancellation of the event in both 2019 and 2021 while the 2020 staging fell victim to the pandemic and lockdown.

We are very grateful to all our members and supporters who have offered their time to volunteer at the event and look forward to seeing you all there.

REGATTA SEASON: The Muckross Head will bring the flatwater season of time trials to a close for 2022 with regattas kicking off in April and through the summer months. The Neptune and Commercial Regattas will be held in Islandbridge, Dublin on the first weekend of April while Skibbereen Rowing Club will host a 1km regatta for junior crews at Drinagh Lake on Sunday, April 10.

Killarney Valley Athletic Club WELL DONE: Killarney Valley Athletic Club distance crew Oisin Lynch, Ted O’Gorman, Jason O’Reilly and William Lyons who were part of St Brendan’s College Schools Team which finished eighth in the Intermediate Boys Cross Country National Finals in Belfast last Saturday.

The Athletics Ireland U20 and U23 National Indoor Championships was held in Dublin last weekend. Congrats to Ciara Kennelly on her silver medal for the U23 High Jump and also to Jordan Lee who came second and equalled his indoor personal best with a jump of 1.90 in the U23 High Jump. Well done also to John O’Connor who came second in his 200m heat with a new personal best of 23.37secs.
