FSUNDAY14TH AMILYDAY

Fossa came to a standstill on Tuesday as the town mourned the loss of Ellen Clifford.
Ellen passed away peacefully last Saturday after a battle with illness.
Less than 24 hours after her passing her two sons, David and Paudie, played starring roles in Kerry’s Munster Final victory over Clare.
Her love of the GAA was evident at her funeral Mass in The Prince of Peace Church on Tuesday morning.
Jerseys representing Kerry, Fossa and her native Ballymac were brought to the alter during her requiem Mass.
Alongside her husband Dermot another stalwart of the Fossa and Killarney communities, she worked for the Department of Justice for 30 years.
But she will be best remembered for her love of the GAA and her support for her two superstar sons.
Ellen was one of the first people to join
the Kerry Supporters Club and never missed a game David and Paudie were playing in.
“She went to every single game,” Paudie said in his eulogy.
“We will miss her so much when it comes to football of course, but it is at the centre of our family she will be missed most.
“She would do anything for Dad and the three of us, probably too much. As well as being our mam she was also a great friend,” he said.
Her kindness extended beyond GAA circles as she had made over 100 donations to the Blood Bank over the years.
Ellen was laid to rest at Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery on Tuesday evening.
She is survived by her husband Dermot, sons Paudie and David, daughter Shelly,
father Pat, sisters Mary (Reidy), Margaret (Fitzgerald), Joan (Wharton), Anne (Black) and Teresa (Gilroy), brothers Michael, Tom, Con, Pat and Dominic, her grandson Óigie, Paudie and David’s partners Orlaith and Shauna, brothers-
in-law, sisters-in-law, aunt, nephews and nieces.
She is remembered by neighbours, work colleagues in the Department of Justice and her many friends including those from the GAA community.

Killarney has lost over €100 million in tourism revenue as an indirect result of international protection seeker contracts with hotels, new figures reveal.
The town has welcomed some 3,000 refugees , the majority fleeing warn torn Ukraine in the last 18 months. However, this is having an effect on the allied tourism trades like cafes and souvenir shops.
Government figures given this week to senior ministers confirm that several towns in Ireland are suffering. Killarney tops the list, with the government analysis saying that the town has lost €100 million in allied tourism busi-
National Parks and Wildlife Service staff at Killarney National Park have revealed that White Tailed Eagles have again nested in the Old Oak woodlands of Killarney National Park.
This is not the first time that such an exciting event has happened in the Park. Over the past 10 years White Tailed Eagles have sporadically nested and successfully fledged young back to the wild from nest sites located within Killarney National Park.
This is particularly gratifying considering that Killarney National Park was the first release site for the White Tailed Eagle reintroduction in 2007.
This iconic flagship reintroduction project now has White Tailed Eagle nest sites in Kerry, Cork, Tipperary, Clare and Galway.
Divisional Manager National Parks and Wildlife Service, Éamonn Meskell, said:
“Killarney National Park is particularly
suitable for White Tailed Eagles because of a readily available fish supply from the Lakes of Killarney. Also, the habitat is particularly suitable with a plentiful and healthy suite of Woodlands and suitable trees within those woodlands to accommodate White Tailed Eagle nest sites.”
The White Tailed Eagles have worked their way into the lore and culture of Killarney and many visitors to Killarney National Park experience the sight and sound of birds soaring above the Lakes of Killarney and onto Tomies and Purple Mountain and also Knockrower to Molls Gap.
“This apex predator is now firmly establishing itself into the landscape and ecosystem and is a credit to the sterling work that National Parks and Wildlife Service staff have put into this project over the past 16 years,” added Eamonn. A rare sighting of an Osprey was also recorded on the Lakes of Killarney last week.
ness from the start of the year until the end of April.
Other Kerry towns feature prominently too, with Tralee said to have lost €32.4 million and Dingle €13 million.
The figures also reveal the estimated number of allied sector jobs lost in the country and once again Killarney tops this list with 2,722 jobs displaced.
By comparison, Tralee has lost 874 jobs and Dingle a total of 350 positions.
It was ironic that in the same week that Cllr Donal Grady announced his official retirement from Kerry County Council that construction started on the Killarney Skate Park.
Grady has been a long-time advocate of the project and as recently as the March Killarney Municipal District meeting he pushed for a construction commencement date.
Now, as he nears the end of his political career, one of his favoured projects is up and running.
Construction workers moved in to a small site adjacent to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centres on Monday.
And while works are weather dependent, it will only be a matter of months before the Skate Park is open to the public given that construction of the Tralee Skate Park began in March last year and it was open by July.
Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has expressed gratitude to Cllr Donal Grady for his commitment and contribution over many years of faithful service during a long and distinguished career in local politics.
The Chamber has wished him a very happy and healthy retirement and stressed that he can take life a little easier, secure in the knowledge that he has helped to make Killarney a better place.
Kayleigh Cronin has been named as the PwC GPA Player of the Month for April.
The Women’s Player of the Month and PwC GAA/GPA Player of the Month winners for April have been announced, rewarding fine performances from some of the country’s top players as the championship got underway.
The Dr Crokes star was instrumental in Kerry’s Allianz League final win against Galway, while she put in a strong performance in Kerry’s opening TG4 Munster Football Championship win against Waterford.
“It was a massive surprise,” the Ballycasheen woman told the Killarney Advertiser.
“Awards like this don’t come around too often.”
The PwC GPA Women’s Player of the Month and PwC GAA/GPA Players of the Month Award winners are voted for by the GPA’s membership.
“It makes it all the sweeter because this is voted by players you play against,” she added.
“Cllr Grady’s decision to step down from frontline politics, after close on a quarter of a century of service, marks a real end of an era,” Chamber joint presidents Johnny McGuire and Pádraig Treacy said in a statement.
Paying tribute to the role he has played in so many facets of Killarney life, they said his commitment to many community causes was admirable and he leaves a real legacy of public service of which he and his family and supporters can be immensely proud.
“Cllr Donal Grady always put the welfare and the wellbeing of his town and its people first and his was a strong and influential independent voice for the people that voted for him, with such consistency and enthusiasm, in all of the elections he contested since 1999,” the statement read.
“He was approachable, courteous, willing to listen and always willing offer help and that’s the hallmark of a very effective local politician.
“When he wasn’t kept busy in the town hall in Killarney or in county buildings in
Tralee, Cllr Grady was a familiar sight on the streets of his home town, meeting and greeting the people and keeping a close eye on the town he loved representing,” the Chamber statement added. “Donal can reflect on a job very well done when he looks back on his contribution to his town and his county. He worked hard and he left his mark."
The Chamber said it is appropriate that Cllr Grady’s final municipal district meeting coincided with the turning of the sod for the new Killarney skate park which has always been a project very close to his heart.
The Chamber said Donal’s family has been a political force in Killarney for many decades with his late father, John, and his brother Sean also serving on the local council and that great tradition will now be carried on by the next generation.
To mark ‘Bike Week’ in Ireland, the Kerry Cycling Campaign will show the acclaimed Dutch cycling documentary ‘Together we cycle’ in the Great Southern Hotel on Wednesday next.
The film investigates the critical events that led to the revival of the Dutch cycling culture. Many people think that cycling in the Netherlands is a natural phenomenon.
However, until the 1970s the development of mobility in the Netherlands followed trends across the globe. The bicycle had had its day, and the future belonged to the car. The only thing that had to be done was to adapt cities to the influx of cars. Then Dutch society took a
different turn. Against all odds, people kept on cycling.
A spokesperson for the Kerry Cycling Campaign said: “This documentary is important for us too, when we consider our climate obligations and also the desire to encourage people to be more active and to consider the bicycle as a mode of transportation. in Kerry towns and villages, including Killarney, we are confident that in the coming years, more people will cycle and walk as the local authority improves the public realm across the county.’
‘Together we cycle’ will be screened in the Great Southern Hotel on May 17 at 7pm. There is no charge for the event that is supported by Kerry County Council and the Great Southern Hotel.

A gala concert of popular songs and music was presented by the Kerry Concert Choir, accompanied by Kerry Scotia Ensemble at the Church of the Resurrection, Park Road, Killarney on April 23.
The large attendance was entertained by the choir which was directed by Dr Sharon Lyons, Soprano. Sharon is a Dublin native now residing in Kerry.
The Kerry Scotia Ensemble, founded a few years ago, is the only professional orchestra in Kerry.
“We were delighted with the outcome and we are most grateful to Bishop Ray Browne and the Killarney Parish clergy for allowing us to stage the event at the lovely Park Road church location which proved to be an ideal setting for the concert” said Cathal Walshe, PRO of Killarney Branch, Kerry Hospice Fundraising Com-
mittee.
“The committee would especially like to thank Dr Sharon, choir and orchestra for a lovely evening of music and song which was much appreciated by the large audience. The generosity of all who donated raffle prizes and members of the public who came along to support the show is
very much appreciated.”
The proceeds of the show will go towards the provision of care for patients, which includes nursing support, specialist services and equipment.
Kerry hospice needs to raise in excess of €10,000 weekly to support these services.

The project will develop and expand Liebherr’s existing systems for ‘smart cranes’ which help to safely and efficiently move millions of shipping containers around the world every day.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Foley said: “This research project brings together two leaders in the field of research and development and shows the importance and the value of industry-academic collaborations. Since its formation in 2005, Lero has established itself as a world leader in software research and continues to underpin Ireland’s outstanding software research reputation. A team from St. Brendan's College, Killarney won a Young Social Innovators advocacy award for their ‘SEM for Inclusion’ project, which aims to raise awareness of and reduce exclusion faced by people with a disability.
High-impact social innovation projects by teams of young people from all over Ireland were among the winners at the Young Social Innovators of the Year Awards, which took place on Croke Park earlier this month.
The YSI awards celebrate excellence in youth-led social innovation. Now in their 22nd year, this year’s national finals event was the first live, in-person Young Social Innovators of the Year Awards since 2019.
The awards ceremony was co-present-
ed by broadcaster Zara King and former Hometown boyband member Dayl Cronin, in front of an audience of around 600 young people from secondary schools the length and breadth of the country.
“More than 5,000 young people from all over Ireland got involved in social innovation projects with Young Social Innovators in 2023,” said Roger Warnock, CEO OF Young Social Innovators.
“It was fantastic to be able to gather together in-person to celebrate at this year’s awards’ finals and I would like to congratulate the winning teams, including those from Kerry. I was blown away by these young people’s ideas, bravery and creativity. Their projects are proof that change is possible and that young people have the power to make a difference.”
long commitment to R&D that Liebherr Container Cranes has shown which, coupled with its apprenticeship and scholarship programmes, set an example for others to follow.”
Liebherr’s managing director, Mr Charlie McCarthy, said the partnership would help strengthen Liebherr’s market position and will allow Liebherr to remain at the forefront of container crane development.
“Liebherr is an industry leader in the manufacture of container cranes, and we enjoy an enviable reputation for providing cranes of exceptionally high quality. Our ongoing relationship with Lero and the team at MTU enables us to compete on quality and technological innovation building on substantial investment in research and development to help ensure the future success of the company and our customers,” he added.

The company is proud to have raised over €90,000 for DSI to date, due entirely to the generosity of colleagues, hotel guests, and the support of the Down Syndrome Ireland team. At an event in Dublin One, the iNUA Collection presented the fundraising cheque to the DSI team, represented by Gerard O’Carroll, DSI President and Aoife Gaffney, Head of Employment at DSI.
Ten of the group’s 15 Down Syndrome Ireland colleagues from across 12 hotels attended the event, along with their families.
Sean O’Driscoll, CEO of the iNUA Collection promised the groups commitment to continuing the €5 per €100 contribution to DSI for all vouchers sold across its hotels as well as introducing the ‘Clean the Planet, Not my Room’ campaign,
Sean also recognized the support of Aoife Gaffney, Head of Employment and the team at DSI in being critical in the success of the National Employment Programme in our hotels.
“With Community as one of our core values here at The iNUA Collection, we are delighted to continue supporting this partnership,” said Mr O’Driscoll.
“Using our group resources and expertise to make a positive impact and engaging both guests and teams in this
process. Our fundraising efforts are one crucial way for us to support DSI and the important work they do. These efforts allow us to engage with our guests and colleagues in a meaningful way, building a sense of community and a sense of social responsibility. We are privileged to be part of this journey with DSI.”

A Kerry Fianna Fáil Councillor has repeated his call for a dedicated testing and treatment unit for Lyme disease, to be set up in University Hospital Kerry, as well as the appointment of a Consultant in Infectious Diseases.
“The recently released report on the impacts of our deer population by the Deer Stakeholder Forum, does not appear to address the issue of Lyme disease being transmitted by infected blacklegged or deer ticks. Time is of the essence in the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme dis-
ease and a dedicated unit locally in Kerry would be a major advantage in the fight against this terribly debilitating illness. The herds of deer in Killarney National Park have been identified as a source for the ticks that spread Lyme disease and it is only common sense then, that we are prepared to deal with it," said Cllr Michael Cahill.
“This is not my first time calling for such a facility and I hope it will not fall on deaf ears on this occasion. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for those who contract this illness while simply walking in the open air."

He was guided through the various sections of the Early Years Education Centre by manager Theresa O’Neill. "It's hugely important to host such visits

Figure Dancing got the ball rolling and from there to the final discipline of the evening in Set Dancing we were treated to a fantastic five hours of evening entertainment.
Kerry was involved in three of the onstage disciplines and first up in the fourth category of the first half were Glenflesk in the Ballad Group. Not alone was this the club’s first Scór na nÓg title but it so hap-
History was made in the INEC last Saturday when the Glenflesk Ballad group won the All Ireland Scor Na nOg final.
This was the first time a Kerry club won the final in the Ballad group discipline. The group consisting of Cliona Moynihan, Muireann Healy, Aoise O Donoghue, Abby Cronin and Patrick Mullane and super sub Sarah O Donoghue performed their two songs “The land of the Gael” and “Sailing off to the Yankee land” with grace and style and superb harmonies. Competition was of the highest level,
but the group's teacher Rosie Healy had them well prepared and tutored to Rosie and the group on this outstanding achievement.
A huge crowd turned out to greet and welcome them back to Glenflesk Club House on Monday evening.
Excitement was definitely at fever pitch and a standing ovation was the order of the day as they gave another top class rendition of their two winning songs.
Chairman Jerry Mullane made a presentation to their teacher Rosie Healy and also to the hard working Scor Officer Allison O Sullivan.
They sang 'Land of the Gael'and 'Sailing off to the Yankee Land' getting a great response from the audience; an audience which clapped along with the latter song. So the history makers were; Aoise O’Donoghue, Muireann Healy, Abby Cronin, Cliona Moynihan and Sarah O’Donoghue.
Crotto O’Neills represented Kerry in Instrumental Music. A first for the club to reach the All-Ireland final having been knocking on the door for several years at District Board level.
The musicians; Conor Brennan, Thomas Breen, Sarah Murphy, Ellen Trant and Grace Hannon Linnane received fantastic rapture from the audience with some stirring music with; the ‘Banks of Newfoundland’ and ‘Andy McCans’ but unfor-
tunately with stiff competition, not the judge’s choice this time round as Armagh lifted the title.
The Set Dancers from the Spa Club were going for their fifth National title in Scór na nÓg.
Dancing two parts of the ‘Lackyle Set’ in the final discipline of the evening and making it two-in-a-row they were simply unbeatable and were head-and-shoulders over their opponents on stage. The members of the victorious Set Dancing team were: Róisin O’Sullivan, Isabel, Waters, Grace O’Connor, Áine O’Sullivan, Ciara O’Donoghue, Dara Brosnan, Diarmuid O’Donovan, Colm O’Connor, OisÍn O’Sullivan.
The fourth Kerry club taking part was Tralee Parnell’s in the Trath Na gCeist. Labhras Mac Carthaigh, Uachtaran Chumann Lúthchleas Gael was on hand to present all the winners with their medals.

The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition returns to the RDS from January 10 to 13, 2024, and will celebrate 60 years of the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition.
The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people on the island of Ireland. It is an all-encompassing celebration of science and technology under one roof.

The three-year sponsorship extension will see BT Ireland continue as custodian and organiser of the exhibition.
BT Ireland has been the title partner of the Young Scientist & Technology exhibition since 2000 and will mark 25 years as custodian and sponsor of the exhibition in 2025.
Applications for the 2024 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition will open in late August 2024 and students from across the island of Ireland are encouraged to submit project proposals and be part of the country’s leading live

“The exhibition is much more than a competition, it is an unforgettable experience of a lifetime for the students who take part. We continue to see the positive impact the exhibition has on fostering young talent in the areas of science, technology, engineering and maths in Ireland, and we look forward to growing the exhibition further in the years to come with our exhibition partners.”
Independent Senator Rónán Mullen has criticised the Minister for Justice for ‘smuggling’ a radical new definition of ‘gender’ into “an already controversial hate speech law’.
Senator Mullen said that there was considerable public unease about the threat to freedom of expression in the Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred and Violence and Hate Offences Bill, which prohibits communication or behaviour that is “likely to incite hatred” but which doesn’t define ‘hatred’.
“Given the many controversial aspects of the Bill, it seems like the Government
is smuggling a new definition of gender in the hope that it won’t get the scrutiny it needs,” Senator Mullen said.
“The danger is that concerned citizens, including parents and teachers of school-going children, may feel intimidated about expressing concern about radical new definitions of gender being pushed by the State and activist groups,” he says.
“The Government never consulted with the public about this.”
Senator Mullen says the Government’s new definition of ‘gender’ is one “at odds with all previous definitions and with no basis in reality”.
In a tweet series covering aspects of the Bill, which is due before the Seanad soon, Senator Mullen said: “Since the foundation of the State, our legislation has always defined gender as binary, while referencing gender identity as something different.”
This new definition, Senator Mullen said, conflates gender with gender identity. “This is not an accidental mistake in draughtsmanship,” he added.
Senator Mullen goes on to say the time-honoured, scientific binary definition of male and female will be replaced by a definition which recognises “at least 105 genders that are currently inter-
The bull was eventually caught but not before he cause chaos and had players from both teams running in all directions in the hope that could escape.
Guasch is a colourful character and often makes the news for dubious reasons.

In 2021 he was fined £10,000 after saying he will never again allow his side play under English officials after losing a rugby league final at Old Trafford, Manchester.
net-listed by gender engaged organisations.”
The Bill defines ‘gender’ as “the gender of a person or the gender which a person expresses as the person’s preferred gender or with which the person identifies and includes transgender and a gender other than those of male and female.”
“It is reckless to include a new open-ended vague definition of gender in a criminal law bill,” Senator Mullen says. “If passed this Bill will have the effect of prioritising in criminal law the views of those who hold with gender novelty over those who accept the time-honoured definition of gender as being binary – that is male and female,” Senator Mullen said.
He is calling for the Government to withdraw the Bill at this stage to allow for a full and proper re-drafting.

Kerry Motor Club has announced details of the running of a Hillclimb on Sunday, July 16 in the Ballyfinnane area outside Tralee which will mark a very special occasion in the county.
The club will mark the 120th anniversary of first motorsport event in Kerry
On July 15, 1903 the very first closedroad motorsport event in the county took place on the hillside in Ballyfinnane, 120 years ago this summer.
That event was won by Charles Rolls, who later went on to become to founder of the Rolls Royce Motor Company
To celebrate the historic occasion, Kerry Motor Club will run a Hillclimb in the same location, 120 years to the weekend that Charles Rolls took home the Kerry Cup from Ballyfinnane.
Hillclimb racing is one of the oldest forms of motorsport disciplines in the country. While similar to rally stages, a Hillclimb course is relatively short, usually between 1 and 1.5km in length with multiple quick runs over the same course across a day.
While there will be some regular faces in rally cars on the day, single seater cars (in a similar style to a Formula One car) are normally the fastest over the quick course and some of single seater formula races are expected at the event. The hillclimb will be run under Motor-
Thousands of people across eight locations in Kerry took part in Darkness Into Light, the annual fundraising event organised by Pieta and supported by Electric Ireland, on Saturday morning.
One of the biggest in the county was the Killarney edition held in memory of Nathan O’Carroll. Over 3,000 people took part in the Killareny walk making it one of the biggest in the country. His mother Marie organises the walk locally each year.
She thanked the many business and individuals who made this year’s walk possible.
They were: Electric Ireland; Killarney Racecourse; Killarney National Park; Sheahan Group,; Daly’s Supervalu; Emergency Services and Order of Malta; MC Brendan Fuller of Radio Kerry; Videographer Dan Devane; Photographers Marie Carroll O’Sullivan and Konrad Paprocki; Samantha Nagle for Instagram and all the volunteers and supporters.
Stephanie Manahan, Pieta CEO, said: “We are beyond grateful for the thousands of people who supported the event this year. To see so many people come out each and every year is truly inspiring and each and every person makes a valuable contribution in enabling Pieta to provide free, professional therapy for suicide prevention and bereavement in Ireland. On behalf of the entire team at Pieta, we want to thank every single participant, volunteer, and supporter. Thanks to you, we can continue to support those who need us most.’’
Meanwhile in London, Aghadoe native Tara Cronin was the lead organiser of Darkness into light, Cricklewood. TV celebrity Laura Whitmore also took part in the London walk.
The annual helps to raise almost €4m nationally to fund Pieta’s lifesaving suicide prevention services. This figure is expected to increase over the coming weeks as public fundraising and corporate donations for the initiative continue.
sport Ireland regulations and safety visits to the course are now at an advanced stage.
The first planning meeting took place on Monday last, May 8 in the Shanty Bar, Ballyfinnane with some 50 motorsport enthusiasts getting to work on what will be a historic occasion in the county. Events will get underway on the afternoon July 15 with car safety inspection, drivers meetings and drivers parades.

We are very much looking forward to bringing the sport of Hillclimb Racing back to Kerry and to celebrate this important milestone in Kerry motorsport history.”
Mr Moriarty thanked Kerry County Council officials who are currently process the road closure requests. More details will be announced in due course including a classic car show and a a host of family entertainment.

This week a judge in Tullamore has done more for the Irish mortgage market than any government minister has in 5 years. Judge Mary O’Malley Costello put Pepper Asset Management Service under notice with the approval of a 25 years, 2.5% fixed rate mortgage as part of a personal insolvency plan.
The judgement is a lifeline to distressed mortgage holders with asset management companies, especially as they are on variable rates of up 8%. These companies are making a huge profit on the back of mortgage holders, so much so, Pepper refused to divulge any commercial information in court. This was a critical part of the Judges judgment; she sought mortgage costs from Pepper, but none were forthcoming.
Upwards of 60,000 mortgages are held by asset management companies and so called vulture funds who bought loan books at a discount while pushing up interest rates on these loans.
In my own case, I was trapped by the system and with a mortgage that never
under performed. I initially had a mortgage with EBS, moved to National Irish Bank to get a better rate. Subsequently NIB was bought by Danske who after several years exited the retail banking sector and hired Pepper Asset Management Services to manage the mortgage. Dankse Bank eventually sold their loan book to Capita Finance who after a few years then sold the loan book to Pepper. It was a game of mortgage table tennis that I had absolutely no control over. A few attempts at moving were not successful due to negative equity and only in the past year did I secure a fixed rate mortgage.
There are many like me who were caught out by buying at the peak of the property market in 2007 and have faced over a decade of negative equity, locking them in with their mortgage provider. This judgement now paves the way for customers of these funds to force better deals and fixed rate deals that will make their loans more affordable.
It took a judge in a district court to make these companies accountable. It says much more about the state of our government and their effectiveness.
The Central Bank of Ireland has published a mid-year report (to end June 2022) providing key statistics on the private motor insurance industry in Ireland.
This is the first such report undertaken and captures data using the National Claims Information Database (NCID).
THE KEY FINDINGS ARE
The average premium per policy was €578 during this period. This represent-
ed a 5% reduction from the average premium in 2021. The average cost is €135 less than in 2017.
Claims settlements – there was in increase in the number and cost of damage to vehicles claims and a decrease in the number and cost of injury claims. However the data is being compared to the first half of 2021 when restrictions were in place.
48% of personal injury claimants settled directly with insurers representing 15% of total costs.
13% of claimants settled through the Personal Injuries Assessment Board
(PIAB) making up 6% of total costs. 39% of claimants settled through litigation making up 79% of total costs.
The Central Bank of Ireland noted that there have not been enough litigated claims settled under the new guidelines to assess the impact on the average cost of a claim in the litigation channel.
The Personal Injuries Guidelines were adopted by the Judicial Council on 6th March 2021. However some claimants received compensation awards calculated with reference to the previous structure known as the Book of Quantum. It will take a few years of data to get accu-
rate trends of the new Guidelines.
The average Irish car insurance premium of €578 is almost half the UK average. The average premium in the UK is £929 (€1062.14) having increased by 21.1% in the year up to February 2022.
This week we are going to look at some of the additional costs one should budget for when buying a property and things to look out for.
When you are lucky enough to have found your dream home and have an offer accepted, your new mortgage will certainly be the biggest item coming out of your bank account but there are other costs that you just need to keep in mind so there are no surprises.
As soon as you receive ‘Approval in Principle’ from your lender, you will need to choose a solicitor to help you purchase the property. Once an offer has been accepted for your new home, the selling agent will request your solicitor’s details. Your solicitor will conduct all the legal tasks to transfer ownership of the property to you. Your legal costs will vary depending on the solicitor and the price of the property but should be clearly set out from the outset.
Local Property Tax is an annual self-assessed tax charged on the market value of all residential properties in Ireland. It came into effect on 01st July 2013 and is collected by the Revenue Commissioners. Property Tax will need to be paid on your new home. It is a good idea to budget this into your monthly/yearly spending. Property tax is calculated on your property value and location.
Mortgage Protection cover assures your lender that if you die before you’ve finished your repayments, your mortgage loan will be repaid in full. It is there to protect both the lender and the customer and is required by the Consumer Protection Code for all applicants that purchase a non-investment property, unless they are over the age of 50. There are some exceptions to this but as a rule of thumb, you will need to be prepared to budget
for the additional fees each month. As with legal fees above, prices will vary across the board depending on your own personal circumstances.
Of course, in the excitement of buying your new home the very thought of fires or floods will not be on your radar but home insurance is an essential add-on. It is required for all purchases. Prices on home insurance will vary depending on the policy type, the rebuild value of your property and location.
As soon as you request drawdown of your mortgage, lenders will look for a guarantee that you’re paying a fair price to the seller, and that this price matches the value of the home. This protects both you and the lender. Lenders will have their own registered panel of valuers from which to choose to conduct the property valuation.
Yet another tax! Stamp Duty is a government charge on your home transaction and is calculated on the price paid for your house. The rate of stamp duty chargeable on a residential home purchase is 1% on the value of the property up to a value of €1m and 2% on anything in excess of €1m. This is a charge that should be budgeted for before purchasing your property.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all those that sympathised with us, sent mass cards, took the time to write letters of sympathy, send online condolences and to all who attended the funeral home, requiem mass and cremation, some travelling great distances.
Thank you to Dr. Gary Stack and his team for the care and compassion shown to Eddie over the years. To Dr. Sheehan and all the staff at Kerry Palliative Care who gave us valuable time to enjoy Eddie’s last few days with amazing dignity and care.
To Claire and Majella, from home help and Karen Moore, who assisted Eddie in the early days of caring for Joan.
To Mary and all the staff of Rockmount Day Centre who also supported Eddie in the care Joan and continue to support us each day.
A special thank you to Fr. Jim Lenihan for all his help in preparing for Eddie’s funeral Mass. To Aidan & Sean Moynihan for the beautiful music, to Eamon Mulvihill for the wonderful mass booklets and Mary & Mike O’Shea and their team for all their professional services provided throughout the funeral process.
We are so grateful for ladies of the “Kitchen team” who swopped in and took over the catering needs of the many visitors. We are also so grateful to Joan’s sisters & family who continue to rally round Joan and us, we know how much it meant to Eddie in the final days knowing ye would be there in his place.
Eddie’s passing caught many people off guard, and we are deeply grateful to the many people who continue to stop and share stories and tales of their times with Eddie, it gives us all so much comfort and peace. Dad, Harold may never have said it outloud but we know you how much he loved your friendship.
As a token of appreciation, the sacrifice of the mass has been offered for the intentions of all those mentioned as well as those impossible to mention.
First Anniversay Mass for Eddie will be Friday 12th May 2023 at 6.30pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.
May he Rest in Peace.
Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. KOC

In loving memory of Eddie
Phillips Killarney and ThurlesWho left this world on 16th May 2022.
In my heart there is an ache that never seems to go away For every passing day I miss the love and warmth my father gave. He was my rock my guiding light My mentor, and my friend And now that he is gone from sight My heartache never ends.
I miss his hugs, his gentle voice And the way he always knew Just what to say to make me smile And chase away the blues.
I miss the sound of his laughter and the twinkle in his eye
His unwavering support and the endless songs and stories
I’d love to hear just one more time. But though he is gone He lives forever in my heart And every time I close my eyes We are never far apart.
So, here’s to you my dearest Dad I miss you more each day And though I can’t hold you close Your love is here to stay.
Deeply missed and never forgotten Emma & Pat.
St. Theresa the Little Flower, please pick me a rose from thy heavenly gardens and send it to me with a message of love. Ask God to please grant me the favour I thee implore and tell him I will love him each day more and more. Amen.

Don’t remember me with sadness
Don’t remember me with tears
Remember all the laughter
We’ve shared throughout the years.
Now I am contented
That my life it was worthwhile
Knowing that I passed along the way I made somebody smile.
When you are walking down the street
And you got me on your mind
I’m walking in your footsteps
Only half a step behind.
So please don’t be unhappy
Just because I’m out of sight
Remember that I’m with you Each morning, noon, and night.
Your passing is felt every day Dad.

On Saturday last, the local community was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Ellen Clifford. A staunch GAA woman, mother to Shelly, Paudie and David, and wife to Dermot, Ellen passed away at her Fossa home after a long illness. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Death puts many things into perspective, sport included. The relative triviality of something like a Munster football final, which was being held the following day, is laid bare. Nevertheless, there was the question of whether or not David and Paudie would line out against Clare in Limerick. It’s not that anyone on the outside was fretting about it either way, but it was still something that needed to be decided.
Behind the scenes, Kerry manager Jack O’Connor spoke to both players and to Dermot. It would be totally understandable if they didn’t feel up to it, but the Cliffords – as a family – were “adamant” that the boys should play. “They felt it was the
best way to honour their mother,” O’Connor said afterwards. And that’s exactly what they did.
Team captain David put in a Man-of-theMatch performance, scoring 2-6 including a pair of well-taken goals. Paudie was also excellent, teeing up his younger brother for the first of those goals before adding one of his own in the second half. In the end, Kerry ran out comfortable 5-14 to 0-15 winners to secure their 84th Munster football title and to set up an exciting home match against Mayo on May 20.
David accepted the cup before being ushered through the crowded pitch with Paudie in tow. As they reached the gate to the dressing rooms, Paudie put his arm round David’s shoulder.
The courage, selflessness and quiet dignity they showed on what must have been an incredibly difficult day was remarkable. Their mother would be proud. The rest of us certainly are.
Kerry 3-11 | Clare 0-15
GAELIC GROUNDS
First-half goals by Tony Brosnan, Dara Moynihan and David Clifford killed this tie as a contest as reigning All-Ireland champions Kerry secured their 84th Munster title - their 11th in the last 12 years.
It was an emotional occasion for the Clifford brothers following the death of their mother, Ellen, the day before but both David and Paudie exhibited class in abundance at the Gaelic Grounds. David added another goal in the second half and Paudie capped a fine performance with a three-pointer of his own to complete the rout.
Kerry looked sharper, hungrier and fitter than they did in the league and the 14-point margin of victory didn’t flatter them one bit. In truth, Colm Collins’ underdogs barely laid a glove on them. Was it that Kerry were too good, or that Clare were too bad? A little from Column A, a little from Column B.
Clare, buoyed by recent victories over Cork and Limerick, were hopeful of causing an upset reminiscent of 1992 but the gulf between the finalists was evident from the off.
Dylan Casey – making his first start in the championship – gave Kerry an early lead with a fisted effort and points by Dara Moynihan and David Clifford (free) quickly followed.
Clare got off the mark in the eighth minute via the boot of goalkeeper Stephen Ryan. At the other end, Gavin White burst forward to kick a lovely score and make it 4-1.
Some bad errors in attack and gaping holes at the back were ominous from Clare’s point of view and sure enough they were punished in the 14th minute when Brosnan played a one-two with Casey before rifling an unsavable shot that rattled the back of the net.
The writing was already on the wall for Clare by this point and when Paul Geaney found Dara Moynihan completely unmarked in the middle of the large parallelogram five minutes later, the Spa man made no mistake. His confident strike widened the gap to eight.
Keelan Sexton and Eoin Cleary tagged
on some points for the Banner but Brosnan and Clifford did likewise for Kerry, and it would be fair to say that Kerry were working their openings with far greater ease than their opponents. The play of the game arrived in the 32nd minute when Paudie Clifford gathered possession inside his own 65 and burst forward. As the elder Clifford carried the ball into Clare territory, he pointed for younger brother David to cut back inside his man towards the centre of the goal before lobbing an accurate through ball in between attacker and goalkeeper.
Kerry’s number 14 got there first, steadied himself, sat down a retreating defender, and finished. It must have been a lovely moment for the Clifford and O’Shea clans watching back home. The remaining 40 minutes or so counted for little, really, although Jack O’Connor’s side deserve credit for the way they applied themselves throughout. The only slight concern was a late injury picked up by first-choice full back Jason Foley. The Ballydonoghue man looked to be holding his upper hamstring or glute when he was forced off in the 70th minute.
Both teams will now turn their attention to the new All-Ireland group stage. Kerry have Mayo, Cork and the losers of Dublin and Louth. Clare will need to regroup quickly if they are to successfully navigate a pool that contains Monaghan, Donegal and whoever wins Ulster.

The sad news of the passing of Ellen Clifford on Saturday last was felt far beyond the parish of Fossa. Ellen, mother of Shelly, Paudie and David and wife of Dermot, had fought a courageous battle with ill health for the past five years and was there in Croke Park to see her sons winning All-Ireland titles with Kerry and Fossa. Beannacht Dé len a h-anam.
It was a difficult decision for David and Paudie on the eve of their Munster final in Limerick. The family decided that Ellen would have been so happy to know her boys lined out with Kerry. They did her proud, as David captained Kerry to a runaway victory over Clare. Both excelled with David scoring 2-6 and Paudie also scoring an excellent goal to complement his work ethic throughout as a score-provider.
The great news is that the plum tie of the next round in the current round robin format will be played here in the Fitzgerald Stadium tomorrow week
(May 20) at 3pm. It will be the clash of champions: Kerry the All-Ireland winners meeting Mayo the winners of the National League.
It will be a Central Council fixture, but Der Bros and his helpers will be busy preparing a welcome for the Westerners. Kerry were in clinical championship mode against Clare but their opponents were way off the mark and that was not surprising after a very poor league campaign ending in relegation. The Mayo game will be a better indicator on how well Kerry are shaping up. It will be a bonanza to the coffers of the hospitality sector in Killarney, too, even if some of the Mayo supporters will not travel. Why? It is too expensive. It was €35 admission for the stroll in the park in Limerick. You can imagine the cost for a family weekend in Killarney including accommodation (if they can get it) and admission to the Park. What is more, the game will not be available on RTÉ, but streamed on GAAGO. Many older supporters in particular do not have broadband or
decent Wi-Fi, especially in remote rural areas.
The GAA has persisted with the cashless admission procedure making no allowance for some spporters who arrive at Lewis Road without a prepaid ticket. In the past I devoted two articles to this unsatisfactory arrangement and offered solutions. The dictat from Croke Park stood. No cash; use your phone. Go online.
I recalled some games including colleges fixtures where prominent local GAA OAPs were denied access and their cash refused. Who trained all the local club teams of all ages, lined the fields, acted as umpires when the referee had no helpers and collected the lotto each week to fund the ever-increasing cost of running any GAA club. Volunteerism is the central plank of clubs, all clubs, all sports. The GAA needs to learn that wonderful story and the truism: ‘don’t bite the hand that feeds you’.
I hope Dónal Óg will succeed in his mission. Puck it out there Dónal.
There is nothing like a local derby in any sport and, in a dramatic finish, the Cork ladies came from nowhere to earn a draw with Kerry (2-14 each) in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
This Kerry team have been in splendid form all season and they must have been confident meeting Cork in the championship. They were coasting to victory, but Cork scored 2-4 without reply down the stretch. Orlaith Cahalane, from that famed multi-sport family that includes Niall Cahalane, did the damage with her well-taken goal after being sprung from the bench. Once again Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh was outstanding, scoring 1-7, but she went off injured in the closing stages. Kerry will be hoping the western star will have recovered for the next round. Now they must beat Tipperary (Sunday at 2pm, Galtee Rovers GAA) to qualify for the Munster final.
HURLERS
No joy for the Kerry hurlers who lost out 1-24 to 0-16 in Tullamore. Offaly will now go directly into the Joe McDonagh Cup final.
This is the one title that has eluded Kerry after coming up short in three finals in recent years. In the last round of games, Offaly do not have to beat Carlow but can do Kerry a favour – if Kerry can also succeed in defeating Laois at Austin Stack Park tomorrow (5.30pm).
Kerry will be expected to win. Nothing else will do. They are very dependent on sharpshooter Shane Conway to build up a winning score and usually need in the region of 10 points from him. He scored 0-7 in Tullamore. The other main scorers were Pádraig Boyle (0-3) and Gavin Dooley (0-2).
scored from a set piece. A quick corner should have been dealt with, getting it away from the centre of the box, but up popped Shane Elworthy to finish. It did not make for a happy interval period.
It's hard to win when you don’t win, or more precisely when you have yet to win one game. That is the situation for Kerry FC. Draws and heroic performances against the odds and a few terrible drubbings has been their lot so far in their first season in the League of Ireland.
There was hope that the first win would materialise at home in Mounthawk on Friday last but it wasn't to be, losing 3-2 to Longford Town.
Kerry manager Billy Dennehy had no illusions about the task for Kerry FC to do well in their first season, but he must have hoped for a bright new summer. It was a beautiful summer May evening at Mounthawk Park, sitting in-between the houses in the St Brendan’s Park area, just above the Top of the Rock.
The Astroturf playing surface, the small but well-presented stand, and the terracing caught one’s eye 30 minutes before kick-off. Closer to kick- off a steady flow of supporters flowed in, and the most
popular vantage point was behind the nearby town goal. That was one of the real attractions for spectators. One could almost reach out to retrieve the ball for Callan Scully.
Longford Town proved tough opposition for Kerry and showed form after recently coming off a 1-0 win over the hitherto unbeaten Galway Utd.
Trpimir Vrljicak very nearly got Kerry off to the perfect start. The ever-energetic Seán O’Connell crossed from the right flank and Vrljicak's header looked to have deceived the Longford defence only to be taken off the line.
The visitors took control and were far more direct in their game plan and it reaped early dividends when a long ball over the Kerry left full was exploited in clinical fashion. The first-time low cross from Giurgi’s pass was met by Stephen Meaney who tucked it neatly to the right of the Kerry keeper. One down at home; the fans were disappointed. But worse was to come when Kerry went two-nil down at a strategic time just before half-time. The Achilles heel of this side was exposed when Longford
Dennehy changed tack for the second half and significantly brought attacking nous into play in the form of Leo Gaxha and Ryan Kelliher. Now we saw Kerry at their best, attacking and taking the game to Longford. They improved no end and, even though they were two goals in arrears, the crowd responded.
Gaxha showed what Kerry need to do by taking the game to the opposition, any opposition. A shot troubled Brady, the Longford keeper, as Giurgi cleared if off the line.
In the 16th minute of the half, Kerry were rewarded for their play. 17-year-old Togor Silong made his debut count with a welltimed tackle, and he got the ball to Gleeson in the box who shot low. Brady saved well but could only parry and McGrath slotted his first goal.
It was all Kerry now, but Longford stole a march eight minutes later. A direct high ball into the Kerry goalmouth was cleared by Matt Keane, or so it appeared, however the header inadvertently went askew and Callan Scully had to retrieve the ball
from the net for the third time. It was a sickener, but Kerry responded magnificently by chasing down that two-goal deficit.
Gaxha was the instigator as Longford tried to curb him, but he did so well to get the ball across to Ryan Kelliher and the Lissivigeen and Killarney Celtic man headed home.
He certainly has the scoring touch. His father, Tomás Seve Kelliher, the brilliant golfer up to international quality, was close by to see him score
Now Kerry had 20 minutes to do it, just one goal down with the young supporters chanting “Leo! Leo!”.
They should have equalised but sadly they suffered yet another defeat. Dennehy has to come up with a strategy to avoid conceding goals from set pieces. Only then will Kerry FC earn their first three points.
Tonight, Kerry FC are away to Athlone Town.
KERRY FC: Callan Scully, Rob Vasiu, Samuel Aladesanusi, Kevin Williams (c), Andy Quaid, Sean O’Connell, Cian Barrett, Togor Silong, Trpimir Vrljicak, Ryan Kelliher, Seán McGrath. SUBS: Aaron O’Sullivan, Leo Gaxha, Matt Keane, Alex Ainscough, Ronan Teahan, Cianan Cooney, Nathan Gleeson, Kennedy Amechi, Shane Guthrie.
Kerry were defeated by Sligo in the All-Ireland U20 semi-final played at Galway on Saturday last. They were beaten 1-9 to 0-9 by a better Sligo team. Sligo will now meet Kildare in the final - I expect the latter to win that one.
Kerry were poor in the earlier games before the championship started but with colleges players available one expected Tomás Ó Sé’s charges to be well in the hunt for an All-Ireland that has eluded Kerry for far too long. Kerry last got to the All- Ireland final in this age group in 2008. Kerry were haunted to edge out Clare at Tralee, did well beating Cork, but disappointed against Sligo. Mind you this is a good Sligo team, backboned by Summerhill College students who defeated St Brendan’s.
They have reached the All-Ireland final the hard way, retaining their Connacht title by defeating Galway, Mayo and Roscommon - all away games.
Furthermore, they had to go without star player Dillon Walsh (good to hear that he is recovering well). Sligo were dealt a
huge blow after 10 minutes when their captain and Connacht Player of the Year Canice Mulligan went off injured.
Kerry opened well with two excellent points from Rob Monahan and the industrious Luke Crowley added a fine point. However, the Sligo goal scored by Niland was the game-changer from which Kerry never really recovered.
It was level at half time 1-3 to 0-6, but aided by the breeze in that second half Kerry could not shake off the Connacht champions.
Kerry won a senior All-Ireland in hurling last weekend - and not in football as one might expect. There was great jubilation at Clane, Co Kildare on Saturday last when Kerry won the All-Ireland Minor C camogie, title defeating Down. No goals but all points, Kerry 12 in all to eight for Down.
The jewel on the Kerry crown was Tara Burke wearing the number 11 geansaí with distinction. She was superb throughout, but particularly in the closing stages when Down were shortening the deficit. Tara from Causeway scored nine of Kerry’s 12 points and was the unanimous
choice for ‘Laoch na h-Imeartha’.
For the record the All-Ireland winning Kerry team was: Lauren Bowler; Yen Leniston, Roisin Quinn, Leonie Walz; Ruth O'Connor, Ciara O'Sullivan, Niamh Quinn; Kathryn Ryan, Hannah Ryan; Amy
McCarthy, Tara Burke 0-9 (5f, 3 ‘45), Shannon Collins (0-1); Amy O'Loughlin, Emma Conway (0-1), Yasmin O'Brien (01). Subs: Chloe McCarthy for O'Brien (38), Niamh Gentleman for Conway (60), Lana O'Connell for O'Loughlin (62).

Golfer Rickie Fowler was on the par-five seventh hole of his third round at the PGA Tour event in Charlotte when his tee shot went right towards the waters along the side of the fairway.
While searching for his ball, the American spotted a snake settled amongst some rocks. North Carolina is home to a range of snake species, many of which inhabit the waters of the Tar Heel state. Angling his wedge, Fowler gently hooked the snake to lift it out from between a gap in the rocks before it slithered away. He eventually took a penalty drop but he still managed to save par.
The deal would mean Messi potentially joins his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi league as the Gulf state splashes its oil wealth in the world of football. There was no confirmation from Messi's current club Paris Saint-Germain, who noted simply that he was under contract until June 30 when contacted by AFP. The source said Messi will sign a "huge" deal with an as-yet-unnamed Saudi club just months after the 35-year-old lifted the World Cup in neighbouring Qatar in December. "Messi is a done deal. He will play in Saudi Arabia next season," said the source, who is not authorised to speak to media and spoke on condition of anonymity. "The contract is exceptional. It's huge. We are just finalising some small details," added the source.

U14 DIVISION 1: Kenmare 2 Athletic 3 (Sean Lyne, Darragh O’Donoghue, Cian Hegarty). On lovely evening for football, our young blues travelling to Kenmare for what proved to be an epic encounter. HT Kenmare 1-0. Our boys started the second half on the front foot and drew level when Alex Doolan floated a free kick into the box and Sean Lyne headed home. We took the lead midway through the second half when the excellent Sergi Costa won and ball in midfield and played in the ever-dangerous Darragh
O’Donoghue who slotted home from the edge of the box. Athletic now on top created a number of great chances and we’re awarded a penalty only for the spot kick to sail over the bar. From the resultant kick out Kenmare to their credit went up the pitch and scored the equaliser. Athletic rallied again and in the dying seconds Alan Scannell weaved his way through the Kenmare defence, the ball popped up to Conor Moynihan who headed over the keeper and the onrushing Cian Hegarty headed to the net. FT Inter Kenmare 2 Killarney Athletic 3.

KERRY U20 ALL IRELAND SEMI FINAL: With the week starting on a high with Will Shine being named as the Munster U20 Player of the Championship, things took a turn for the worst in Pearse Stadium on Saturday. Sligo came out on top in this eagerly awaited All Ireland semi-final but fair to say Kerry will have been disappointed by the hours event. To be fair to Will, he top scored for the Kingdom with four points but the overall effort never really got going.
SENIOR MEN: Castleisland Desmonds visit Direen this Sunday, May 14th, for Round 6 of the Credit Union County League Division 1. The game throws in at 2pm. The Senior B team are facing Churchill away on Friday night.
JUVENILE BOYS UPDATE: The U15 boys had a busy week. On Wednesday night they put in their best display of the year so far when accounting for Na Gaeil in Tralee in the latest round of the County League. The win sees them qualify for the Division 1 Shield semi-final in what has been a great learning experience for them so far. The prestigious Féile qualifying competition was held in Direen Friday night where Dr Crokes and Fossa were the visitors. There was only a hair's breadth in any of the games, with Legion and Fossa drawing, Crokes narrowly defeating Legion but then falling to the same fate themselves to Fossa. It was Fossa who emerged from a very enjoyable evening of top-quality entertainment.
FIXTURES: In Round 6 of the Credit Union SFL we will play Milltown Castlemaine at home in Spa Saturday 13th May at 7pm.
LOTTO: Next week’s draw for a jackpot of €7,200.

SFL DIV. 1: Dr. Crokes 2-17 Austin Stacks 4-6. Our senior team returned to winning ways following a 5-point victory over Austin Stacks last Saturday evening in Connolly Park. Stacks started the better with a goal inside 30 seconds, but this young Crokes side responded well and led by 3 points at half time. Strong scoring returns from Mikey Casey, Charlie Keating and Alex Hennigan provided the basis of this victory and bringing 2 Co. League points back to Lewis Road.
SHL DIV. 1: Dr. Crokes 0-7 Crotta O’Neills 0-12. On Thursday last we welcomed Crotta O’Neills to Lewis Road. Having reeled off a number of good scores early on, Crotta looked strong, leading 5 points to 1 after the opening quarter. Points from Michael Lenihan and Tom Doyle, along with two long range efforts from the deadfall meant that we cut the gap back down to 2 at the interval, 8 points to 6. As the rain came down in the second half, scores were at a premium for both sides. Crotta made the best of the showers to move points clear after 45 minutes. Just a point from both sides in the closing 15 minutes meant defeat for the home side. We now sit 6th on the table at the halfway mark of the Co. League.
SHL DIV. 3: Dr. Crokes B 5-9 Tralee Parnells B 0-15. Our junior hurlers made it two wins from 2 in Div. 3 of the Co. League in Lewis Road on Friday night.
ELLEN CLIFFORD: Fossa GAA club lost one of our most cherished and loved members on Saturday with the passing of Ellen Clifford, Ellen, mother of Shelley, Paudie and David and married to our chairman of the past five years Dermot Clifford will be missed by all, far and wide. Ellen, nee O’Shea was a true lover of the
GAA and travelled the country supporting Kerry, long before the emergence of her star sons, and was probably in every club field in the county supporting Fossa, at all grades. Ellen, even through her illness, was at all the games, and being in Croke Park on club final day to see Paudie lift the “canister” will be one of many memories that will be cherished by us all. Ellen will be dearly missed in the Fossa field on match day, but we know she will be looking down on us and inspire us all to be the best we can. Ellen you will be sorely missed by us all. Suaimhneas síoraí dá hanam milis
U15: Fossa U15s had a good week, beating Milltown by a last-minute point on Wednesday and then qualifying for the Div 2 Féile by beating Dr Cokes and drawing with Legion. The winning run came to an end of Saturday morning when beaten by a very strong Kenmare team.
ALL IRELAND SCOR NA NÓG: History was made in the INEC last Saturday when Glenflesk Ballad group won the All-Ireland Scor Na nÓg final. This was the first time a Kerry club won the final in the Ballad group discipline. The group consisting of Cliona Moynihan, Muireann Healy, Aoise O’Donoghue, Abby Cronin and Patrick Mullane performed their two songs “The land of the Gael” and “Sailing off to the Yankee land” with grace and style and superb harmonies. Competition was of the highest level, but the group's teacher Rosie Healy had them so well prepared and tutored, making sure the title came to our proud club. Congratulations to Rosie and the group on this outstanding achievement.

The final against Ardfert was a much closer affair and we trailed at half time by two points 1-2 to 0-3, Rory O’Connor and Ronan O’Connor our point scorers. In a second half of fantastic defending and attacking we kept our opponents scoreless while we added on 1-04 to emerge victorious on a score line Kilcummin 1-07 Ardfert 1-02.
