Six rescued from snowy Carrantouhil trek

Six adventurers who wanted to reach Carrantouhil's snowy summit spent hours stranded on Wednesday after making a navigational error.

26 volunteer members of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team were called out at 4.15pm to come to their aid and finished at approximately 1.30am. It was their first major callout of the year.

The climbers - made up of two separate groups - ascended the popular mountain after a Met Éireann Yellow weather

alert was issued warning of the presence of heavy snow on the MacGillycuddy's Reeks. The first two-person group made it to the top and on their way down met the second group of four.

All six decided to descend together, via the south-west face of the Bone on Maolán Buí, an area to the east of the Zig Zags

Son arrested in Miriam Burns murder case

The man arrested and charged with the murder of Killarney woman Miriam Burns will remain in Garda custody for at least two weeks.

Billy Burns (52), was arrested in a homeless centre in Tralee on Tuesday. He was charged with the murder of Ms Burns at 45 Ardshanavooley, Killarney between August 12 and 15 last year.

He appeared in Killarney Court later that day.

Ms Burns body was found in her home on August 15 last after neighbours, who had not seen her for a few days and had became concerned for her well-being, forced entry in to the house.

A murder investigation was launched following a post-mortem examination, which was carried out at University Hospital Kerry by State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster.

The 75-year-old was a hugely popular

- a well-travelled descent route - when they made a navigational error and attempted to go down an unrecognised route.

The six became cragfast 150m from the gully and raised the alarm around 4.15pm. “Conditions on the hill were very poor, rendering any approach to the casualties from the bottom of the gully dangerous. The team instead climbed up to a point near the top of the Bone above the gully, where a belay system was set up,” Colm

Burke from the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team said. A number of team members abseiled 200m from the belay point down to the casualties and secured them to haul lines that were used to bring them all safely to the top of the ridge. Once at the top, the casualties were short-roped down off the Bone to awaiting Landrovers in the Hags Glen.

“Apart from being very cold and fatigued, thankfully none of the casualties were injured and the rescue successfully concluded at approximately 1.30am.”

The team confirmed the six hillwalkers were well equipped and wore the correct clothing for a winter summit attempt of Ireland's highest mountain.

Two experienced hill runners dressed in shorts and t-shirts with head torches passed the rescue operation on their way to the top and later made it down safely.

figure in Killarney and is best remembered for her elegance and happy demeanour.

Her death sent shockwaves through the community.

One neighbour who did not wish to be named at the time said: “She was a lady, a lovely sociable person, a very good neighbour, private in her own way but a very good person. It is a huge shock, such an outgoing person, she was always dressed well, and off around town on her bicycle. We don’t need this – it is very sad.”

Another neighbour added: “It is an awful shock, she was such a lovely bubbly person. This is very hard for the neighbourhood.”

Dunrine traffic tailback to continue until end of April

Traffic delays faced by early morning motorists heading to Killarney from the Tralee side can expect a few more weeks of disruption.

Works on the long-awaited Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme has resulted in several road closures in the area. As a result, traffic leaving Kilcummin heading towards Killarney must travel via Lawlor’s Cross forcing extra traffic onto the already busy Tralee-Killarney road. With the slip road at Coolcorcoran also closed, traffic has been backed up from the Cleeney roundabout all the way to Dunrine every morning for the last eight weeks. Now, it's been revealed that con-

struction work has hit an unspecified problem.

Uisce Eireann has applied to Kerry County Council to extend the road closure order beyond its March 31 deadline.

"An extension of this road closure is being sought to the 21st of April subject to confirmation by the local Roads Authority," a Uisce Eireann statement said.

The Killarney Advertiser understands that the contractor is experiencing more-difficult excavation conditions, like bedrock, than originally anticipated.

Premiere

of ultra runner Kevin Leahy’s film revealed

A documentary on Killarney ice racer Kevin Leahy’s exploits in the Arctic will premiere at the Wander Wild Festival on March 20.

'1000km of Chaos' charts the Killarney hostel owner's adventure races above the arctic circle this time last year.

Last March he completed the 500km Lapland Arctic Ultra in Sweden after five and half days in the frozen wilderness.

A few weeks previous he finished the 500km Yukon Ultra in Canada.

Alongside him for both journeys was local filmmaker and director Adrian McCarthy of Grandview Media whose production company has edited footage from both races and Kevin’s preparations over the last two years. This has now been turned into a feature length 90-minute movie.

It will get its first public airing at St Mary’s Church of Ireland in Kenmare Place on the opening Friday night of the Wander Wild Festival.

“I have seen the edits as they get finished,” Kevin told the Killarney Advertiser.

“Adrian follows me training in Kerry too and there are some spectacular shots of Kerry scenery. That is the whole ethos of the festival; get out there and a have an adventure.”

Alan Corcoran’s 'Unsinkable' will also make its screen debut at Wander Wild.

In 2019, Corcoran completed a swim of the east coast of Ireland from Giant’s Causeway to his native Waterford. Footage from that adventure has been turned into a 52-minute film called ‘Unsinkable’.

Traders committed to outdoor dining scheme

Traders in Kenmare Place are committed to the future success of the outdoor dining scheme.

Tracy Coyne of the International Hotel has called for patience as early “hiccups are ironed out” ahead of “what will be an awesome community project”. She was reacting to comments made at last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting where several elected councillors questioned who was responsible for the management of the outdoor seating of the Fáilte Ireland Weatherproofing and Outdoor Dining Scheme, which is operational since late last year.

Exactly half the outdoor seating remains open to the public between 8.30am and 10.30pm every day, and consumers are free to buy products in other premises around the town.

A row broke out in the Council chamber after politicians questioned who was responsible for laying out tables and chairs each morning and securing the furniture

each night.

“We are all committed to making this a success,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.

“This will be a fantastic community amenity. We are in weekly contact with the Council [executive] and issues like heating and lighting are being addressed as we find them. Now is the time to iron

out any wrinkles as they arise while we are still in the shoulder season and before the summer season really kicks off.

Everybody needs to keep their eye on the prize, which is the delivery of an amazing community amenity for locals and visitors to enjoy during the summer sunshine.”

Staff from the International Hotel and other nearby businesses are managing

the seating arrangements every day. “This time of the year there is no point in putting out one hundred chairs while the weather is still so inclement. Perhaps the councillors were concerned that it is not fully operational just yet,” she added, “But we will stay level-headed knowing that."

Ms Coyne praised the success of the new scheme which has only been used in the winter months so far.

Students from town centre secondary schools are frequent users of the facility during their lunch hour.

“I had a group of seven or eight St Brendan’s students here the other day, I don’t know where they bought their food but they sat in our allocated section,” she added. “They cleaned up after themselves and left it as pristine as they found it. I'm sure Sean Coffey [Principal] would be very proud to see the way they conducted themselves. These are our future customers, and indeed some of them are our current staff so we are very happy to see them.”

Special presentation made to local angling club

A special presentation was made to Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club (KSTAC) this week in memory of an avid angler who passed away nine years ago.

The presentation was carried out in O'Neills of Plunkett Street on Monday.

The current proprietor of the family business, Denis O'Neill, presented the KSTAC with the Jeremy O'Neill Memorial Shield in memory of his late father Jeremy who sadly passed away in 2014.

The shield was designed by Gerdie Murphy of Vincent Murphy Sports in Castleisland and it will be presented annually to the Club Angler of the Year.

"O'Neill's has, for many generations now, been a focal point and gathering location for anglers both local and from afar and it's great to see the business still support-

Hotel staff help with Tidy Towns effort

Hotel staff from the town centre are part of a clean up campaign ahead of this year's Tidy Towns results.

Staff from the great Southern Killarney are out and about every two weeks making a special effort to keep their local area clean.

They're concentrating on the areas from the East Avenue access past the Railway station, all the way to the conference car park.

Staff take part in rotation with up to 10 members at a time from various departments taking part in this initiative. “The Great Southern has been a landmark in hospitality here in Killarney since 1854," Michael Jacobi, Managing Director of the Hayfield Family Collection, said.

"We are proud of our history and for still playing such an integral part of so many peoples’ life in Killarney and beyond. We are aware of our responsibility to give back to the community and one way to do so is to support the efforts of the Tidy Towns team and to present Killarney as a clean and world-class tourist destina-

tion.”

Co-Presidents of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Johnny McGuire and Padraig Treacy, welcomed the move.

"We really welcome this initiative that has been highlighted by Michael Jacobi, The Great Southern, one of our oldest hotels of Killarney town, with a proud tradition of welcoming community and visitors alike," Johnny said.

They added that the Tidy Towns ethos is at the heart of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce for many years and the great work being shown by the Great Southern team "is tremendous".

"We would love to see this being supported by the many other businesses across all sectors in the town," Padraig added.

"Under the new management structure of Kerry County Council there is a fresh impetus to bring Killarney as a town back up to a higher ranking in IBAL and Tidy Towns, and this can only be achieved if we have full support from you all."

ing and supplying anglers today," Mike Doody, Secretary Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club (KSTAC), said.

"The Killarney Salmon and Trout Angling Club are very grateful to the O'Neill family to have been honoured with receiving this lovely shield and are very proud of the connections that it has with angling in Killarney."

He added that Denis was delighted to be able to acknowledge the ties with local angling through his family's sponsorship of the shield and in further support to the club, he will sponsor a prize for the winning angler as well.

"No better incentive for club members to dust down the rod and reel and contemplate taking to the waters for the season ahead! We are delighted to be presented with this shield and to be able to support a traditional local business which still has angling to its core today."

Rotary celebrates International Women's Day

It was a day for celebrating women all over the globe and Killarney Rotary Club did that in the Great Southern on Wednesday.

The day was about recognising women's achievements, challenges, and focusing greater attention on women's rights and gender equality. At the Rotary's lunch they did that and more as Rotary President Rayla Tadjimatova addressed guests while Abbie O'Sullivan from St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School, winner of the Rotary Youth Leadership Competition, spoke about her recent Rotary trip to Stormont, Dáil Eireann and Strasbourg and the experiences she had and the lifelong friendships she made with 23 other students from all over Ireland who won their places on this trip.

"Killarney Rotary Club extended an invitation to their own family members and friends to join them for lunch," Ciara Irwin Foley told the Killarney Advertiser.

The gathering was welcomed by Rotary President Rayla Tadjimatova and all were

The magic of ABBA comes to Rathmore!

Excitement is at fever pitch in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra this week as the final rehearsals are underway ahead to the much-anticipated school musical.

‘Thank You for the Music – The Musical' takes place in the school's gym on Tuesday next (March 14) and Wednesday (March 15) at 7.30pm.

Preparations have been underway since September when the auditions took place and the lead cast and chorus members have been busy rehearsing since October. This is a whole school event with cast and chorus members coming from First to Sixth Year groups under the stewardship of director Rebecca Stryker, who teaches music in the school. Behind the scenes, Transition Year students have played vital roles both

on and off stage. Those who are not performing are involved in set design, programme design, advertising, ticket sales, hair and make-up, ushering and helping backstage, supported by teachers of all subject departments.

"The entire school and local community are looking forward to this fabulous show which will showcase the wonderful talent in our students," said principal, Denis Kerins.

‘Thank You for the Music’ is an ABBA inspired musical, set on the little Greek island of Kalakari where Sophie dreams of a perfect wedding - one which includes her father giving her away.

The problem is that Sophie (played by Ali Doyle) doesn’t know who he is!

Her mother Donna (played by Saoirse Casey), refuses to discuss the past, so Sophie sneaks a peek into her mother’s

ancient diary, to discover three possible fathers: Sam, Bill, and Harry (played by Sean O’Keefe, Setanta O’Callaghan and Mollie Herlihy).

Sophie secretly invites all three to the wedding, convinced that she’ll know her father when she sees him. But when all three turn up, it may not be as clear as she thought!

Great turnout for Barraduff charity run

There was a great turnout for the Barraduff 5k charity run/walk on Saturday.

Organised by Triumph Coaching Killarney in association with Barraduff Community Field, the 5km course was laid by the periphery of the community field necessitating each participant to complete seven laps of the course.

Teas, coffees, buns, cakes and goodies were served by the ladies committee in the community centre following the

event.

Kerry Hospice/Palliative Care were represented by Chairman of Killarney branch of Hospice Pat Doolan and branch secretary Julett Culloty.

It would be fair to say the event caused a great buzz given the weather was so suitable and all for a good cause!

Book to remember the late Johnny ‘The Rock’ O’Brien

A Glenflesk man who died in tragic circumstances at Christmas is to be forever remembered in a book.

The Glenflesk community woke to the worst possible news on St Stephen’s Day when they learned that Johnny 'The Rock' O'Brien, had died in a house fire.

A passing motorist alerted emergency services after seeing the fire in the early hours of December 26.

A popular local figure, ‘The Rock’ was a farmer who lived his entire life at the roadside farmhouse near Glenflesk. He was well-known to passing motorists, a friendly honk of a car’s horn was always met by an equally happy salute from the bachelor farmer. His love of his animals made national headlines a few years ago as he saved them from flooding after a severe storm. A central part of the local community, ‘The Rock' was supposed to climb The Paps with a group of locals on the Monday morning of his death to raise funds for two charities. Now a friend and neighbour wants to remember him and she is looking for old

March launch for new book 'The Liebherr Story'

photos and anecdotes to compile into a book.

“The idea is to gather stories and anecdotes from as wide a group of Johnny's friends and neighbours as possible and combine them with as many photos as possible.

“[Photographer] Valerie O'Sullivan is completely behind this project and has promised to help with photos of Johnny,” said his neighbour and friend Lucy Chisholm Greenfield in a social media post.

“The plan is to self-publish a little book to keep Johnny's memory alive. I will absorb the costs and the price will be set low to encourage everyone who knew him to buy a copy.

“All money from the sale of books will go to the two charities that Johnny was intending to raise money for by walking to the summit of one of The Paps with Sam McGuire on St Stephen's Day. The walk went ahead in the snow but without Johnny and with heavy hearts.”

The two charities that the book will support are the Kerry Cancer Support Group and the Brian Lawlor Trust.

'The Liebherr Story' – a new book about the history of the Fossa crane factory - will be launched at the Europe Hotel and Resort on March 20.

Tom Foley’s new book traces the history of Liebherr Container Cranes in the locality since 1958.

“For 65 years, the Liebherr factory in Killarney has had a significant impact not only on the economy of the Southwest but also on the lives of families in the region and beyond. It brought wealth, prosperity and opportunity to the region,” said Trevor O'Donoghue, the marketing manager at Liebherr Container Cranes.

“New skills and trades were developed and passed along within Liebherr and eventually filtered out into the community. New businesses supplying the factory were established and grew through their connection with Liebherr.

“Of course, Liebherr’s presence extends further than the factory in Gortroe. The Europe Hotel and Resort, The Dunloe

Hotel and Gardens along with the Ard na Sidhe Country House are all part of the extended Liebherr story.”

The March 20 launch will take place at 6.30pm and guest speakers include members of the Liebherr family and author Tom Foley.

The book will be available on the night ahead of its general release on March 21.

A Killarney hotel receptionist has been named the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) 'National Employee of the Year'.

Sonia Smith of the Cahernane House, was announced as the winner during the IHF’s national conference which was held in the Great Southern Killarney this week. Now in its sixth year, the award celebrates and recognises the hotel team member who has made an outstanding contribution to their workplace.

“This award truly showcases the immense talent and dedication shown by hotel and guesthouse teams right throughout the country. I am delighted to congratulate Sonia on being awarded the IHF Employee of the Year,” said Denyse Campbell, President of the IHF. "Her outstanding dedication, hard work,

and commitment to providing exceptional service to guests are truly commendable. We are grateful to have such wonderful teams of hotel employees right around the country who consistently go above and beyond to make our guests' experiences unforgettable. It is their passion and dedication that make our hotels truly special places."

Sonia started in 2018 in the accommodation department of Cahernane House after completing her Leaving Certificate. She quickly showed immense aptitude and ability and soon moved to reception in 2019 where she was promoted to Reception Supervisor in 2022.

Receptionist named 'National Employee of the Year' Students experience French culture

C O’Sullivan, gave their account of their four fabulous days in the French capital.

"On this trip we not only developed our conversational French and appreciation of the French culture, but also formed life-long friendships and bonds with the people around us," Anna Cashman said.

"There were a variety of highlights throughout the trip, from viewing the city of Paris from the top of the Arc de Triomphe, enjoying a cruise down the river Seine, visiting the architectural and his-

torical masterpiece that is Palace of Versailles and experiencing French cuisine in local restaurants in the heart of the city."

Another memorable highlight was visiting what they described as "the happiest place on earth", Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney Studios.

"Not all highlights stemmed from the itinerary; evenings spent in the hotel, airport and the bus trip is something we will hold near and dear," Abbie C O’Sullivan added.

"We have studied the French language

for the past five years which has made this trip even more anticipated."

Remembering their experiences in France will be a useful point of focus for them in their French oral exam at the end of Sixth Year whilst also allowing them to reminisce about a trip they will never forget. As Audrey Hepburn once said “Paris is always a good idea”.

"Thanks again to all the teachers involved in organising this trip and making it truly unforgettable for all."

They're busy bees in St Oliver's

There was a great buzz in St Oliver's School last week as pupils got their hands on a colourful and educational robot.

It was education whilst having fun in Ms O'Brien's Senior Infant class as they got to grips with the new Bee-Bot supplied by Kerry Education Centre who have invested significantly in STEM equipment for primary schools

Bee-Bots are exciting robots designed specifically for use by young children and have become part of modern technology in the classroom. They are bee-like in appearance with a series of buttoned commands, are colourful, and easy-to-operate - essentially the perfect tool for teaching navigation, sequencing, estimation, problem-solving!

The robot enables learning colours, shapes, orientation, alphabet and lots of other skills. An inclusive activity for all abilities where navigation tasks can be simplified and more difficult depending on the circumstances.

Double celebrations for The Brehon Hotel and Spa

The wonderful team at The Brehon have not one, but two reasons to celebrate this week.

Their hotel was named as one of a select few in Ireland to receive the Best Employer Certification from Workbly, which identifies organisations who score in a high percentile in a number of key areas including; communications, training, culture and employee engagement.

“We are overjoyed to have been presented with the Workbly Best Employer Award. This certification places The Brehon firmly in the top percentage of hotels in Ireland, and shows that our hotel is not only a rewarding place to work, but also, has so much to offer to current and future employees,” Sinead Murphy, General Manager, said. Following on from an employee survey, the results were independently assessed by a team of experts in the employee engagement space.

“The Brehon’s core values focus on de-

is to get from one area on the map by programming the Bee-Bot with instructions and navigation throughout its journey from A to B.

Team play among pupils, concentration, anticipation and memorisation of programmes are done without realising that they are working on their learning.

"The Bee-Bots have arrived in St Oliver's as part of our Changemaker School project. The goal of the project is to promote children's learning, problem solving and critical thinking skills," teacher Leanna O'Brien told the Killarney Advertiser. "The children love programming the BeeBots. It encourages learning in such a fun and interactive way."

Senior Infants were also selected as one of the winning classes for Scríobh Leabhair with Foras na Gaeilge, after they compiled a colourful book with Irish themes including a drawing by each child in the class.

livering exceptional service standards to our guests, and without our incredible employees, this wouldn’t be possible. The culture of our organisation is centric to our staff, and we’re delighted to see such rewarding results from our recent employee survey,” Caroline Daly, People and Culture Manager, added.

Following on from their recent accolade, The Brehon hosted their Annual Employee Awards, in recognition of the contribution their staff have made over the past 12 months.

The main award winners were; Aoife Lynch – Employee of The Year, Caitriona Ashe – Manager of The Year, Tania Almeida – Best New Starter and a Special Recognition Award was presented to Liz O’Sullivan who recently celebrated her 30 years tenure with the O’Donoghue Family.

PAINT LIKE A PRO: How to paint your kitchen cabinets

Kitchen due a refresh? A lick of paint can instantly transform your kitchen and extend the lifetime of your cabinets. At Pat McDonnell Paints, we help customers achieve a full makeover at a fraction of the cost of a new kitchen.

STEP 1: PREP

As with all painting projects, preparation is key to achieving an attractive and long-lasting finish. Firstly, protect the surfaces you don’t want to paint! Empty cupboards and drawers and remove all handles. Place dust sheets to protect your floor.

Over the years, grease, dirt and dust can build up on your cabinets. These wreak havoc on paintwork so it’s important to fully clean the units before picking up a paintbrush. Household cleaners leave a film, so we always recommend a de-

greaser or sugar soap. Mask hinges and where the cabinetry meets walls and tiles. Deltec Gold Masking Tape ensures sharp lines and zero residue.

Tip: Always clean before sanding, as sanding can compress any dirt into your cabinets!

STEP 2: SAND

To improve paint adhesion, lightly sand your cabinets with fine-grade sandpaper. Once done, wipe down cabinets with methylated spirits to remove any trace of dust. Allow to dry.

STEP 3: FIX

Apply a quality filler to any imperfections (holes, cracks etc.) with a wet filling knife. We like using the Prestonett Filler Range – ask in-store for the right filler for your cabinets. Once dry, lightly sand and wipe with a clean damp cloth.

STEP 4: PRIME

Apply one coat of primer. The primer you use will depend on your cabinets, so check with one of our team for the best primer for your project. Leave plenty of time for the primer to fully dry, check the tin for drying times, we often advise leaving it overnight if you can. (Plus, it’s a great excuse to order a well-earned takeaway!)

Tip: For most kitchen cabinets, we rec-

ommend using Ralston All-Primer. Not only can this primer be tinted to the colour of your choice, but it is also biobased and kinder to our environment.

STEP 5: PAINT

For a smooth, durable topcoat, we recommend one coat of quality paint from the Ralston Aqua range in the colour and finish of your choice. Cut-in and apply your paint with a good quality brush or roller. Leave to dry fully before re-affixing cabinet doors.

Tip: If you feel a second coat is needed, it is important to allow each coat enough time to fully dry before applying the next coat. Don’t be tempted to put the cabinets back too quickly and risk an accidental smudge!

South Kerry Jobs Fair a huge success

Both employers and attendees described the South Kerry Jobs Fair, held in the Great Southern Killarney, as an overwhelming success.

Almost 1,500 people attended the event on Thursday last, while there were more than 50 exhibitors from across a broad range of employment sectors and agencies also present. Some of the employers present confirmed that they employed people directly at the event. It is the second year of the event which is organised by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG, in conjunction with the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, and sponsors included The Great Southern Killarney and Red Chair Recruitment.

SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that they were delighted with the turnout which was larger than expected.

“An excellent range of candidates with broad skillsets attended, particularly from the Ukrainian community which is a testament to their desire to work and integrate into the communities across South Kerry,” he said.

Senior Executive with Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce Bridget O’Keeffe echoed this and added that there was a super atmosphere in the Great Southern as jobseekers spent time with exhibitors looking for the best opportunity for them.

“All exhibitors put in a huge effort to select suitable candidates from a very strong talent pool aided by interpreters where necessary,” she noted.

REELING IN THE YEARS

Muireann King from Killarney Distilling and Brewing Company described it as an excellent event and said that they had some excellent candidates that they are looking forward to following up with and hopefully placing.

The level of interest from the candidates attending was highlighted by Siobhan Whelan from the Sheehan Group who described it as an excellent event. TJ O’Connor from MTU also noted the enthusiasm of the candidates who attended, both those seeking employment as well as those interested in pursuing further education opportunities while Madina Zikare from the Muckross Park Hotel said it was a very busy day with a lot of applicants and they are hopeful of filling the positions they had on offer.

SKDP’s Enterprise Officer Joanne Griffin said she was delighted with the event overall and thanked both the candidates that attended as well as the employers for their commitment to the event.

“We were also delighted to have a team of interpreters in place to assist in translation for some of the Ukrainian candidates,” she said, noting that many of them are attending English classes and are very anxious to take up employment positions. Joanne added that they are hoping to expand the event further in 2024 and may look to add new elements to it.

Challenges still remain tourism conference hears

Securing a long-term sustainable recovery in tourism was centre stage on Tuesday as hoteliers gathered in Killarney for the Irish Hotels Federation’s (IHF) 85th annual conference.

Speaking at the opening of the ‘A Shared Vision’ themed conference, Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) President Denyse Campbell said that tourism has witnessed unprecedented upheavals over the past three years with a number of challenges still remaining.

“While we saw a welcome uplift in tourism activity during the last six months of 2022, significant uncertainty persists this year in relation to the global economy – particularly given the challenges we face around the cost of doing business, high levels of inflation, increasing interest rates and an ongoing cost-of-living crisis across key overseas markets,” Ms Campbell stated.

A particular concern for hoteliers and the wider tourism industry is the outlook for bookings from Great Britain given the very challenging economic environment this market is facing. Traditionally Ireland’s largest source of overseas visitors, Great Britain continues to face very significant economic headwinds, and this is having an impact on the outlook and levels of forward bookings. According to recent industry research carried out by the IHF, 60% of hoteliers report that forward bookings from Great Britain are still down on pre-COVID levels. The rest of Europe is also challenging while the prospects for North America are brighter this year. Despite lingering economic uncertainty, hoteliers remain focused on recovery

and building on progress made in the second half of 2022 with 54% of hotels and guesthouses planning to increase employment levels this year.

“At the heart of every successful hotel and guesthouse are its people, and supporting and developing them is key to our long-term success," Ms Campbell added.

"We are encouraging people of all ages to consider a career in the hotel sector. There are an enormous variety of career

paths and training opportunities that are constantly evolving in our sector. It is an ideal time given the wide range of exciting options available for people at every stage of their working lives.”

Ms Campbell noted that, since the lifting of restrictions in 2022, the industry has achieved a remarkable restoration in employment with over 250,000 livelihoods now supported by tourism businesses throughout the country including 60,000 employed directly by Irish hotels and guesthouses.

Meanwhile 85% of hotels are planning to invest in refurbishment and additional capital expenditure over the coming year – making up for lost ground since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

Ms Campbell noted that sustainability is a major focus for the sector with 67% of hotels planning to invest in sustainability initiatives this year while a further 25% are actively exploring options for potential investment in this area. Key priorities include renewable energy and heating, energy efficiency, retrofitting of buildings, waste reduction and water conservation.

“Needless to say, our industry has been through an exceptionally difficult period, but we are now beginning to see a cautious optimism for tourism as hotels look to invest in their businesses and product development this year with a particular emphasis on investing in our people, sustainability and business development.”

Irish actors well represented at this weekend's Oscars

The success of Irish films at this Sunday night’s Oscars in Hollywood could be a springboard to expand the movie industry in Ireland.

This year marks a record-breaking 14 nominations for Irish stories and talent across the awards, including the history-making nomination for Irish language film ‘An Cailín Ciúin’.

Representatives from Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, Tourism Ireland, the IDA, Enterprise Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs will lead a trade mission in Los Angeles to promote the Irish screen industry and Ireland’s cultural power ahead of the Academy Awards this Sunday.

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin will meet with world leading US studios and production companies including Sony and Disney, which includes representatives from Marvel, Searchlight and Lucasfilm.

The trade mission – a key part of the Government’s St Patrick’s Day programme – aims to build on the recent critical success for the Irish screen industry and the recognition of Irish talent on the world’s stage.

“The global reputation of the Irish screen industry has continued to grow over the last number of years, with Irish projects achieving incredible critical and commercial success. This trade mission aims to further strengthen relationships with

our US partners and build towards future industry growth and success,” Désirée Finnegan, Chief Executive, Screen Ireland, said.

“We hope the industry’s success, and record-breaking number of Academy Award nominations, will inspire and pave the way for the next generation of Irish filmmakers to be ambitious in telling the cultural stories that matter to them.” Meanwhile, Aer Lingus has flown the Irish stars and their families to Los Angeles in time for the celebrations on Sunday night.

Tralee family helped by Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust

Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust came to the aid of a Tralee man’s family following his sudden death in Canada.

Brad Duffy from Racecourse Heights in Tralee died unexpectedly on February 19.

The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust: “Aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the body of loved ones who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances back to Ireland.”

Alligator bites Florida homeowner

A man living in Florida got a painful surprise when he opened his front door - only to be bitten by an alligator!

Aer Lingus rolled out the red carpet in Dublin Airport for the star-studded flight on Wednesday.

Among those who travelled was the talented Catherine Clinch from 'An Cailín Ciúin', alongside her cast members Carrie Crowley, Andrew Bennett, Michael O’Sullivan, and Kate Nic Chonaonaigh, and director-producer husband-and-wife team Colm Bairéad and Cleona Ní Chrualaoí. Another Irish actor who is hoping to fly home with the coveted gold statue as cabin luggage is 'Aftersun’ actor Paul Mescal.

On Saturday night Scott Hollingsworth heard a noise and opened the door thinking it was someone looking for his son - but an animal lunged at him and bit his upper thigh at the man's home in Champions Drive in Daytona Beach.

Initially Scott thought he was bitten by a dog as he had not turned on the light when opening the door - only to realise after that it was a gator which wildlife officials estimated to be nine feet long following the attack.

"Went outside and didn’t turn the light on and just got a step outside and something grabbed me on the leg, started shaking violently," Scott said. "I really didn’t get a good look at it. When I saw what it was, I stepped back in the house and closed the door. Looked down and I had a large gash in the side of my leg. I was trying to put pressure on it."

Thanks to the funding, Brian’s family were able to get his remains home for his funeral in Tralee which took place this week.

The family have set up a GoFundMe to help future repartitions for Irish citizens by raising funds for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.

“The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust was of great help in assisting with Brad’s repatriation from Vancouver to Ireland,” said the GoFundMe page.

“The funds raised will go to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. The money will

be used for future repartitions for Irish citizens. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Rest in peace, Brad.”

To donate search Brad Duffy Repatriation Trust Fundraiser on GoFundMe.

He was brought to hospital where he underwent surgery while Florida Fish and Wildlife captured and euthanised the gator.

"Fortunately, there’s no damage to my knee, which I was concerned about. Everything’s going well."

Scott had a lucky escape as just two weeks ago an 85-year-old woman was killed while out walking her dog in Fort Piece, Florida.

The shocking incident was captured on a wildlife camera showing a gator emerge on land and pull the woman underwater.

Rodent droppings found at Tralee store

Food was pulled from the shelves at a Tralee store after the Food Safety Authority (FSAI) found rodent droppings under shelving on the shop floor.

'Fiddler on the Roof' actor Chaim Topol dies

Israeli actor Chaim Topol, who became famous for his portrayal of Tevye in the stage and screen musical 'Fiddler on the Roof', has died. The Oscar-nominated actor, who was diagnosed with dementia a number of years ago, was aged 87. Topol was described by the President of Israel as a "gifted actor who conquered many stages in Israel and overseas, filled the cinema screens with his presence and especially entered deep into our hearts".

Topol was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor after the 1991 Broadway revival of 'Fiddler on the Roof'. He also played the role of Tevye more than 3,500 times until 2009 and scooped a Golden Globe for Best Actor for this role. He was granted permission to attend

the awards ceremonies even though he was on active service with the Israeli Army at the time.

Topol was born in 1935 and grew up in a working-class area of Tel Aviv. His career really took off after starring in the 1964 Israeli comedy 'Sallah Shabati', and this won him a Golden Globe for Most Promising Male Newcomer.

Topol starred in several Israeli and American films including the 1975 adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's 'Galileo', the 1980 sci-fi film 'Flash Gordon' and 1981 James Bond movie 'For Your Eyes Only'.

In 2015 he was awarded the Israel Prize for lifetime achievement and special contribution to society and the State. Topol is survived by his wife Galia, who he married in 1965, and their daughters Anat and Ady and son Omer.

Referendum on gender equality this November

The people of Ireland are to be given the opportunity to vote on gender equality later this year.

A clause in the Irish constitution regarding a woman’s role in both the home and the workplace is “outmoded” according to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

Article 41.2 contains a line that says “by her life within the home, woman gives to the State a support without which the common good cannot be achieved” and “endeavour to ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home”.

Both these clauses will be voted on in referendum that will be held in November.

It follows recommendations from the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality and by an Oireachtas committee last year.

However, at this point it is not clear if other Bills will be added to the referendum.

Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman, said he intended to publish the general scheme of one or more referendum Bills by the end of June.

The Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality issued 45 recommendations, including that Article 41.2 should be deleted and replaced with non-gender-specific language.

Homesavers, located at Unit 4, Mile Height Retail Park, Tralee was ordered "To cease the sale, packaging and/or processing of all food products on the premises" after a HSE inspection.

"I make this order being of the opinion that there is or is likely to be a grave and immediate danger to public health at, in or on the said premises for the particular reasons set out in Part 2 of the Schedule," the inspector said.

Under the FSAI Act, 1998, a Closure Order is served where it is deemed that there is or there is likely to be a grave and immediate danger to public health at or in the premises; or where an Improvement Order is not complied with. Closure Orders can refer to the immediate closure

of all or part of the food premises, or all or some of its activities. In the case of the Homesavers store, only part of the premises was closed. It has since reopened. The inspector also reported evidence of non-compliance stating: "An Authorised Officer was prevented / obstructed from carrying out an inspection in order to fully determine the nature and extent of a pest infestation and the extent of any contamination of foodstuffs, after establishing during the inspection the presence of rodent droppings on the premises."

Five Closure Orders were served on Super Asia Food, Dublin, White Rabbit (restaurant/café), Dublin, Il Capo (takeaway) in Dublin, Cork Oriental Supermarket Ltd in Cork, the East Oriental Take Out in Dublin 8, Top Oil Gala, Dublin, Dook's Fine Foods (restaurant/takeaway) Tipperary, Gianny's (takeaway), Edenderry Co Offaly and one Prohibition Order was served under the FSAI Act, 1998 on Fish Seafood Deli Ltd in Skibbereen, Cork.

Minister launches new Primary Curriculum Framework

Minister for Education Norma

Foley TD launched the new Primary Curriculum Framework (PCF) for all primary and special schools yesterday (Thursday).

The PCF will shape the work of all primary and special schools for the coming years. This is the first curriculum framework for primary education in Ireland. Under the framework, schools will have a dedicated structure underpinning learning, teaching and assessment.

The PCF is designed to cater for all primary and special schools and sets out the vision and principles for a redeveloped, modern curriculum.

The framework introduces and expands aspects of learning including STEM Education, Modern Foreign Languages and a broader Arts education.

The Primary Curriculum Framework was developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) over a six-year period and draws on an

extensive body of national and international research.

“This is the first framework for primary education and therefore a watershed moment for primary school communities who will benefit from the rich experiences it will provide for children, teachers, parents and the wider community," Minister Foley said.

“The development of the primary curriculum also reflects the other interconnected developments in education and the progress of policies and strategies being worked on by my Department at this time. These include a new Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Strategy which is being developed at the moment and the second STEM Education Implementation Plan, which I published last week."

It is recognised that the introduction of the Primary Curriculum Framework will require time and support for teachers and school leaders to become familiar with the contents of the framework.

BYD to become major player in Irish market

Chinese car manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) has entered the Irish market.

BYD – said to be the biggest manufacturer of electrified vehicles – has recently appointed Motor Distributors Ltd (MDL) as its Irish franchisee. While Motor Distributors Ltd has not yet announced a dealer network, the Dublin-based company already imports and distributes Mercedes Benz cars in to Ireland.

"We look forward to introducing BYD vehicles to Irish motorists and to estab-

lishing BYD as a major player in the Irish market," said Paddy Finnegan, MDL chief executive.

"Whilst complementing the long-standing distribution interests we currently have, this new opportunity to represent BYD and introduce their vehicles to Irish motorists is one of great importance to MDL by enabling us to re-establish a strong presence in the volume-selling segment of the Irish market."

BYD’s Atto 3 mid-sized salon should be on Irish – and even Kerry roads – within weeks.

Farm robotics a highlight of Sunday’s tractor show

The manager of one of the first beef farms in Europe to go fully robotic will share some of her secrets at an event this weekend.

Tomies-resident Aine Sweeney is the manager of South Glen Farm near Banteer in Cork.

She is one of the guest speakers at the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club’s tractor show at Killarney Racecourse on Sunday.

South Glen is owned by Frank and Theresa Murphy from Killarney.

Theresa’s ate father Gerry ran the farm as a dairy concern but the Murphy family wanted to streamline the operation so they could concentrate on other busi-

ness interests.

In 2014 they introduced a Lely Vector automated feeding system to the now dry-stock farm. It was the first feeding robot to be introduced to a beef unit in Europe although Lely technology was already popular in dairy farms.

The robot allows manager Aine to spend more time on the operation and administrative side of the farm instead of the previous two times a day feeding regime.

“The robot does three things. It measures the amount of feed available, it delivers feed to areas once it knows feed is running low and pushes food back close to a wall to where the cattle will eat it,”

she explained.

The robot operates 24/7 and Aine can manage it all from an App on her phone. Other guest speakers at Sunday’s event include Michael Hoey who owns the biggest collection of vintage farm machinery in Ireland.

Tralee-based farmer Tommy Moynihan will explain how to overcome a farm accident and Aeneas Horan, of event sponsor Buckley Agri, will be on hand to describe the latest in New Holland tractors and ambulances.

All proceeds will be donated to CRITICAL - The Emergency Medical Response Charity, and gates open to the public at 11am.

Three reasons stocks will fall

I can’t recall a time in my career when the outlook was so ‘uncertain’.

I write to clarify my thoughts on the market, but right now, the market noise is deafening.

For me, the economic data points to an obvious slowdown, so my head screams ‘LIMITED UPSIDE’, but my pocket tells me I have been wrong plenty of times before.

Here are three areas I am watching that will dictate where the market goes over the coming months and how you can set up your portfolio accordingly.

1. There is an alternative Bonds have become a genuine alternative to stocks as the equity risk premium falls.

This is already playing out. More than $100bn has flowed out of stock mutual funds and ETFs on a combined basis over the past 13 weeks, one of the worst flow collapses on record while money market fund flows surge.

The narrative is simple. Why have all your exposure in ‘risky’ stocks if you can get

2. Earnings

Company earnings drive the stock market in the long run, and higher interest rates will squeeze margins and lower corporate profits over time.

- In Q4, S&P 500 companies posted an average earnings decline of 4.9% over the same quarter a year earlier. This marks the first quarterly decline since the third quarter of 2020.

- S&P 500 profit margin fell from 13.4% in Q4 2021 to 10.8% in Q4 2022.

- Forward earnings projections have fallen from +10% to +2% over recent weeks - a trend that will likely continue, (some of this is already priced in).

As company profits fall, the price investors are willing to pay to own a part of these companies falls as well.

3. Real Estate slowdown

In the US, ‘existing-home sales’ have been falling for 12 months straight. January year-over-year sales were down 36.9% and are now at levels last seen during the COVID low and Great Financial Crisis.

Even with supply constraints, housing affordability is far from where it needs to be for demand to return. We need to see either a big adjustment lower in interest rates, a realistic decline in prices or some combination of the two.

In Ireland, the trend is still developing. Europe is behind the US in the rate hiking cycle, so mortgage rates are still relatively low (but rising). The housing market has remained stable as a result. There have been some signs of a slowdown in activity but no significant price movement. The number of house sales in January 2023 was 11% lower than the same month a year earlier. However, supply issues and a lower mortgage rate relative to the US mean we are unlikely to see any significant price declines in Ireland just yet. As rates increase, however, I expect the Irish market to come under the same pressure we are currently seeing play out in the US.

Outlook

As we move forward, the question that determines where the stock market will

centre. Suit Professional or professional couple. Telephone 087 6724700.

How long can rates stay this high before something breaks?

In my opinion, any market rallies we see off the back of single data releases will be short-lived - but they will happen. Long-lasting bull markets require rapidly expanding valuations and/or strong earnings growth. I don’t see a reason for either in the data.

Art therapy helps explore internal feelings

Art therapist Eveleen Murphy has set up a private practice in Killarney town centre with the aim of using creative expression to explore feelings.

Art therapy is a mental health intervention that uses creative expression to tap into how we really feel. The psychotherapeutic process can be used to soothe anxiety, release emotion, communicate issues and tell our personal story.

Eveleen has worked primarily with children and adolescents in the areas of bereavement, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, anxiety, issues related to the family unit, learning difficulties, behavioural and self-esteem issues. She is client led in her approach, promoting emotional regulation, integrating self-identity through art-making, within the therapeutic relationship.

Eveleen is a professional member of IACAT, has a Masters in Art Therapy from CIT and a Masters in Fine Art from NCAD in Dublin.

She is now taking appointments for oneto-one sessions with children of primary school age and teenagers up to 16-years of age.

Self-expression is encouraged through art making, safe holding and can be reflected upon with the art therapist. It is with the aid of a therapist that feelings can be integrated when exploring the image, Eveleen explained.

"Art therapy is not about analysing the image but allows an individual to arrive at an understanding of what is happening internally for them," she explained.

"Art therapy sessions take place within a safe and confidential space and materials are provided to explore themes or individual led art making. Sessions are client led, meaning the young person will direct and control what is brought up in

therapy."

Eveleen’s approach is to gently guide individuals through their own feelings around the process of making and the image produced, helping them make sense of their personal experience and the world around them.

An introductory session will identify what goals are to be explored, sessions are 45/50 minutes and carried out weekly, at a set time.

Generally after six sessions a review will be arranged with the parents/carers to understand the best course for the child.

There are many benefits of art therapy for young people:

Audiology Medical Services opens new Killarney clinic

Ireland’s leading independent hearing healthcare company, Audiology Medical Services (AMS), has opened a new clinic in Killarney on Scott’s Street.

Located at the ‘Killarney GP’, this new clinic is part of AMS continued expansion plans for Kerry, with clinics already in the Bon Secours Hospital and Scotia House in Tralee.

“We are delighted and proud to be opening a new clinic in the heart of Killarney," Chief Operating Officer of Audiology Medical Service, Kay Lewis, said.

"It will now allow us to provide a full diagnostic, adult and paediatric audiology service to clients based in South and East Kerry with this new Killarney clinic, as well as North and West Kerry with our existing Tralee clinics.”

Director of Audiology, Jessica Lewis, will be leading the Audiology team on site in Killarney. She has extensive experience of working with both adults and children, bringing with her an enthusiasm in audiology and microsuction ear wax removal, as well as an appetite for keeping up with the latest advancements in hearing aid technology.

A family-owned business, Audiology Medical Services is leading the way in Ireland when it comes to the provision of expert and comprehensive child-centred and family-friendly diagnostic audiological assessment of infants, children and adolescents.

At the forefront of hearing care, Audiology Medical Services constantly strive to introduce innovative techniques and practices to their comprehensive range of services. This includes microsuction; a quick, comfortable, safe, and effective way of ear wax removal, while as an in-

A Post Leaving Cert course could be the perfect option

Recent data from the Central Statistics Office (CAO) reveal that just over half of Leaving Cert students go straight onto a CAO-listed course.

dependent hearing healthcare company, Audiology Medical Services also have the luxury of not being tied to any single hearing technology manufacturer. This means they can provide each patient the best hearing solutions to suit both their budget and individual needs.

"Our ethos is always to provide a professional service in a clinical setting, using the latest technology available, and that’s exactly what we will be doing at our new clinic in Killarney," Kay added.

"Our experienced audiology team are expertly trained and are members of the Irish Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists (ISHAA) and the Irish Academy of Audiology (IAA). Their training is continuous, so we can provide the best in audiology health care."

Hearing can easily be taken for granted, but it is vital that a hearing test becomes part of your annual health check-up. Audiology Medical Services offer free adult hearing screening tests at all their clinics nationwide including their new Killarney clinic. Approximately 56% of school leavers accept a CAO offer and progress directly into courses in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). There are several reasons for this, the most obvious one being the huge variety and a growing awareness of options now available to students upon leaving school. These include over 1,900 Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses for school leavers and adults offered by over 200 colleges of Further Education (FE) nationwide. In recent years about one in four Leaving Cert candidates has opted to do a PLC and there is a growing number of adults returning to education via the FE route.

LOTS OF GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE A PLC

Many Leaving Cert students find it difficult to know what area they want to study in after school. PLCs offer the chance to try an area of interest out and gain work experience before committing to a three or four year degree. It also prepares students very well for progressing onto studying that area in more detail, giving a great foundation for further study. FE colleges are similar in size or a little bigger than secondary school, so getting to grips with independent learning, as well as key skills in communications, IT, referencing and research in that type of supportive environment makes the transition to third level easier. Students who may struggle to get the CAO points required for the course they are interested in should definitely consider applying for a PLC course. There are a quota of college places on lots of CAO courses reserved each year for students who use their QQI FET/FETAC results from PLC courses to apply for CAO courses. In fact, about 20% of CAO applicants each year have completed QQI FET/FETAC awards. PLCs also make good financial sense. There are no fees and students can apply for the SUSI grant if eligible.

APPLYING TO COLLEGES OF FURTHER EDUCATION

Applications for PLCs are now open for autumn 2023 for Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied students, adults and mature students. Entry is not based on points and details of entry requirements can be found on FE college websites. It is possible to apply throughout the summer, but some colleges may have earlier deadlines. It is advisable to apply early as popular courses fill quickly. Begin by exploring the full list of options nationwide on www.cao.ie/options and www.fetchcourses.ie. Make sure to use the course search facility on www.careersportal.ie and on www.qualifax.ie to help narrow down the courses that are best suited to interests, skills, aptitudes and career plans. The Education and Training Boards (ETBs) and individual FE college websites also have lots of information about how to apply. For options in Kerry see www.kerrycollege.ie. Completing a PLC course greatly enhances employment opportunities and opens up pathways into Higher Education for those who wish to continue their journey in education.

You always loved the cards we sent You saved them through the years You said they made you feel so loved Your eyes glistening with tears.

This year when I bring flowers In my mind I’ll hear you say They’re beautiful.. You shouldn’t have.. But I love them.. thank you dear. They say you’re in a better place I hope and pray it’s true But.. today is your birthday And I am really missing you.

Poll reveals gender gap in sports

Major discrepancies in how males and females see women in sport, Killarney Advertiser survey finds

A new survey carried out by the Killarney Advertiser has revealed striking differences in the ways that men and women view women’s current standing in sport. The poll, which was carried out online to mark Women in Sport Week, found that 91% of women feel that professional male and female athletes should get equal pay, compared to just 26% of men. When asked to expand on their answers, many of the male respondents said that pay should be commensurate to the revenue generated by the teams/leagues in question. “More people interested in men’s sport means more revenue because of the men. Why should females

get a share of this?” one man asked. On the other side of the argument, a woman noted: “They’re playing the same sport, in the same environment, putting in the same commitment and time. Why shouldn’t the pay be the same?”

When asked if they believe that equality exists between men and women in sport, the majority of respondents, male and female, said that they do not (90%). However, there were significant discrepancies between males and females within that percentage.

Just 0.2% of the women who took our poll said that equality does exist, compared with 21% of men.

There are also major differences in how men and women view media coverage. Just 15% of women said that women’s sport gets a fair amount of media coverage, compared with 57% of men. The issue of trans inclusion has been in the news recently as the LGFA adopted a policy that will allow trans women to play the sport, subject to conditions. Girls aged 12-15 will need to provide medical confirmation that they are transitioning while players aged 16 and over must provide records that show that their testosterone levels are at or below the required number.

Our survey indicates that the majority of

our readers are against the policy. Over half (56%) of women said they are not in favour with almost three-quarters (74%) of men stating likewise. Over twice as many women (27% versus 12%) said they are still undecided on the issue. The one thing that both men and women appear to agree on is the direction that women’s sport is headed. Roughly six out of seven (86%) of our respondents said that things are getting better for women in sport, with the remaining 14% stating that things are staying the same. None of the people who took the survey (0%) said that things are getting worse for women in sport.

Our women’s teams still need more support

Everyone loves a bandwagon. The success of the Irish women’s soccer team has done an awful lot for the visibility and popularity of women’s sport in this country, and both will likely slip into overdrive for the World Cup which gets underway in Australia in July.

We’re witnessing something similar here in Kerry with the ladies Gaelic football team. Last year’s surprise trip to the All-Ireland final captured the attention of a county that is obsessed with its men’s side. Kerry are currently top of Division 1 of the Ladies National League with a perfect record of five wins out of five. The run has people talking. Of course, it shouldn’t necessarily take success to make people sit up and take notice. After all, female athletes train just as hard as the men and make the same sacrifices. But winning naturally piques public interest and it should hopefully be a springboard to more support and more appreciation down the line.

There are still issues that need to be discussed. Media coverage, or lack thereof, continues to irk participants and officials in the female ranks. As a journalist I have to hold my hands up here and admit that more needs to be done. We

can be guilty at times of following the numbers but the reality is that for any sport to grow, it needs to be highlighted and promoted professionally and consistently.

That is something that I’m very happy to do and while we might not have the resources of larger, national papers, I absolutely appreciate that it’s important that we do our best.

I see it for myself when we share articles about Sarah Leahy or the Kerry ladies or St Paul’s or the Killarney RFC girls. The people I meet ask me about them and how they’re getting on. Even on that small local level, it generates interest, which can only be a good thing. In terms of professional sport, the question of equal pay continues to divide opinion. A sizeable portion of the sporting community seem to believe that pay should be commensurate to the revenue the sporting body in question is generating. Obviously organisations can’t pay out money that simply isn’t there yet but when men’s and women’s teams and athletes are under the one umbrella, equal pay should be a realistic target.

In the case of the GAA, the LGFA and the Camogie Association, there is no

question that the men are being looked after far better than the women are, but this can’t be used as a stick to beat the GAA with. They are separate entities. When the proposed merger happens, you would hope to see a more level playing field in terms of expenses. Trans inclusion is a hot button topic at the moment (particularly in light of the LGFA’s new policy) and it’s a conversation that stirs up strong emotions on both sides. There are, I think, legitimate

arguments to be made both for and against but we must be wary of misinformation. This suggestion that boys and men are suddenly going to “decide” to be women and turn up to football or camogie training so they can dominate is, frankly, nonsense.

Trans players who wish to play will need to provide medical confirmation that they are transitioning if they are under 16 and proof that their testosterone levels are less than or equal to 10 nanomoles per litre if they are 16 or over.

Anyone who thinks that boys and men are going to lie to their doctors and/or go through hormone therapy and/or try to trick the LGFA just to play football or camogie with women, is not living in the real world at all.

It’s interesting to note (and the survey that we carried out this week backs it up) that opposition to trans inclusion in women’s sport is far more fervent amongst men than it is amongst women. Ruminate on that for a minute. There are things that need to be ironed out across the board but, all in all, there are lots of reasons to be optimistic about the future of women’s sport both locally and nationally.

If supporting your local women’s teams isn’t something that you’d normally do, there has never been a better time to start. There’s still room on the bandwagon.

As part of Women in Sport Week, Adam Moynihan reflects on the major issues affecting our female athletes

The success of the Irish women’s soccer team has done an awful lot for the visibility and popularity of women’s sport.

Hi Sofia. Thanks for speaking to me today.

No problem. Thanks for asking.

How have you found Killarney since arriving last year?

Killarney is a refreshing change of scenery, especially for myself coming from a big city back home.

You were in Limerick before you came to Kerry?

Yes, I played for the Limerick Celtics for two years.

Tell me about your background in basketball before coming to Ireland. Has the game always been part of your life?

I started playing basketball when I was 10 years old. Once the doctor told my parents I was going to be quite tall they decided to put me into basketball. Growing up I played on club teams, school teams, and summer travel teams. I played five years of college ball at Ryerson University (Toronto Metropolitan University) in Canada, where I got my degree in Early Childhood Education and a certificate in Human Resources. Then I went on to play professionally in Denmark before I came to Ireland.

Was a professional career always on the cards?

I only saw myself playing professionally when I was near the end of my university career. My mom and dad and coaches back home really pushed me to play overseas because it’s an experience and an opportunity that not everyone gets.

What do you think of the standard of basketball here, and the style of play?

I think the standard of play in Ireland is comparable in some aspects to how it is at home. It’s very physical and can be fast-paced at times.

What attracted you to the St Paul’s project?

I wanted to sign for St Paul’s because they were a new team in the National League and I thought that being part of a new club in a different part of Ireland would be good for me. Especially teaming up with Yuleska Ramirez Tejeda (my rival last season), I knew playing together would bring a new level of competitiveness and talent to the team.

I was also coached by James Fleming last season in Limerick and we have built a good relationship over the last couple years.

How would you sum up this season so far?

This season has been very rewarding. Coming in as a new team after not hav-

Paska and Paul’s are tuned in

ing a women’s team in years, we have really showcased the talent that we have. We’re finishing the season as one of the top teams in the National League and I think that’s really great for the club. Tell me about your teammates and your coach. What kind of relationship have you developed?

James has played a pivotal role in the team’s success. If you don’t know who he is, he’s usually the loudest coach on the sideline! He’s tough on us but he knows what we need to do to win games. And my teammates this year have been great. We have all built a good relationship with each other and I think the relationship has gotten stronger as the season has gone on. I think we have all learned something from each other and that has helped the team to be successful.

What’s the mood like in the camp as the regular season draws to a close?

We’re all very tuned in during trainings. This Saturday we play our last game of the regular season before playoffs. It’s a big game for us - with a win Saturday we place top in the Southern Conference. Then with playoffs around the corner we really need to improve on our strengths as a team and dial in on what we need to improve on.

As it’s Women in Sport Week, I wanted to ask you about the issues facing female athletes today. What do you think is the biggest challenge for women in sport?

I would say the lack of exposure, financial support, and lack of confidence women have compared to male athletes. Female athletes at any level really go under the radar or get overlooked

because they’re not advertised or acknowledged for their achievements as much as male athletes are.

I know this has been circulating the internet recently too about the wage gap between female and male athletes at any level which makes it harder for female athletes to make a living just off of playing a sport.

I also feel from my own experience that female athletes lack confidence and self-esteem when talking about themselves or comparing themselves to others. A big message to all female athletes is to believe in yourself and know your worth!

That’s great. Thanks for your time and good luck on Saturday. Thanks Adam!

Gold Cup evokes great memories

Celebrating St Patrick’s day, our national feast day, is special worldwide for parades such as the big one in Dublin and the marvellous effort here locally in Killarney, with a parade the centrepiece of a wonderful programme of events. The Gold Cup evokes so many memories of Irish spirits raised as Florida Pearl, Forget Me Not, Beef or Salmon and so many more lifted the treasure of National Hunt racing, An Corn Óir. Look no further than 2002, 2003 and 2004 and Killarney’s outstanding jockey Jim Culloty charging up that Cheltenham hill to victory. Those were famous years for the local followers of the equine stakes. Three years in a row by the outstanding Lewis Road jockey. Best Mate won his third Gold Cup in 2004, becoming the first horse since Arkle 40 years earlier to seal the treble. Trained by Henrietta Knight and ridden by Culloty, the horse ran in the claret and blue colours of Aston Villa. No

doubt Jim’s mother Maureen will be following all the action at Cheltenham from her home in Killarney.

I suppose it was a longshot for Jack Kennedy to be fit to ride in this year’s big race. The Dingle jockey has not fully recovered from a broken leg sustained early last January. Disappointment for the 23-year-old Dingle man, so it looks like 43-year-old Davy Russell will take his place.

GREATEST

Move just a few miles down the road on our bothairín na smaoite from Moss Keane’s Currow to Castleisland and, more specifically, the Latin Quarter of same for memories of one of the greatest sports writers of all to come rolling back to us. Con Houlihan was different and what’s

more he made a difference in sports journalism. Not for him the blow-by-blow account of who scored what and how many minutes were left in the contest. He saw the bigger picture. He ever went into a press box in his life, be it Croke Park, Fitzgerald Stadium, Cheltenham, Harold’s Cross, Lansdowne Road, Old Trafford, or wherever there was a sporting contest. He wanted to be among the plain people of Ireland, savouring how much sport meant to them.

Who can ever forget Con’s take on his annual trips to the Cotswold Hills to be among the plebs with the ham sandwiches wrapped in the racing pages of the newspapers - in stark contrast to the wellheeled ‘beef or salmon’ upper classes. However, when Killarney’s own Jim Culloty coaxed Best Mate for more coming up that hill, the Irish roar and the mini-tricolours signalled supremacy for the small nation over the best from the British Empire. A win over the auld enemy is special in any sport. Big Con reported from Cheltenham as follows:

“When Arkle stormed up the hill to his first Gold Cup, few of his myriad admirers realised that nibs of snow had started to come with the wind; yesterday it was very cold in the Cotswolds but in retrospect most of those who were on Chel-

tenham’s racecourse will remember the time between about half past three and four o’clock as a fragment of Summer. Such was the enormous outburst of emotion that for a little while the thin wind seemed not to matter. And no doubt there are decent men and women who will dip into their imaginations at some distant date and say that they were there – and they will be right.”

Con died in 2012 and I had the privilege of a two-hour visit with him at St James’ Hospital, Dublin a very short time before he died.

What a wonderful report he would have had in 2022 when Rachael Blackmore became the first female jockey to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the 182-year history of the race. She also became the first woman to be leading jockey at the Cheltenham Festival with six victories, including the Champion Hurdle on Honeysuckle, in 2021. The following year she became the first female jockey to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup aboard A Plus Tard for Henry de Bromhead.

Cheltenham will hold centre stage next week. Even people who say they have no interest in sport are enthused by the Aintree Grand National and the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Kennedy goal lifts spirits in Tralee

Kerry FC lifted the spirits of the home fans at Mounthawk Park on Friday last when they earned their first LOI point in a 1-1 draw with Limerick side Treaty United.

Seán Kennedy had the simple task of tapping the ball into the net after a great run by Leo Gaxha. He sent a low cross into the path of Kennedy to score his first goal for Kerry FC. They might have had a second goal in that first half when Gaxha’s cross was out of reach of Nathan Gleeson. Curran equalised for Treaty FC and the Kerry side had to be at their best when reduced to 10 men after Andy Quaid was sent off for a second yellow card offence.

Kerry face a tough away game in Round 4 against Galway United, the league leaders. Manager Billy Dennehy is experienced enough to know that it will take some time to get the team to gel and get those wins in this long campaign. Meanwhile, Killarney Celtic’s dreams of advancing to the FAI Junior Cup semi-final were shattered at home in Celtic

Park when they were beaten on penalties by Ballynanty Rovers.

Realistically, Neilus Hayes’ side were up against it having forfeited three of their best attacking players to Kerry FC. However, Neilus was magnanimous on the trend that leaks the club’s best players to sample LOI soccer, or even to try and make it cross-channel.

The game ended scoreless, and two periods of extra time could not separate the sides. Then came the penalty shootout. 4-4 was the score when all the first 8 penalties were converted. Celtic lost out with the last kick.

In England, Manchester United were beaten 7-0 by rivals Liverpool. It was their biggest ever loss in this fixture, a bitter pill for so many local fans, and for greats of the past such as Roy Keane.

The Cork man didn’t put a tooth in it, saying the players should be “ashamed” and “embarrassed”.

Nevertheless, United will rise again.

Tyrone still have the Indian sign over Kerry Ireland must beware the Ides of March

The Ides of March at Murrayfield?

Hopes are very high that Ireland will win the 6 Nations and head off to the World Cup with realistic notions, but first of all they will have to negotiate that banana skin match at Murrayfield tomorrow.

Ireland go in as strong favourites but Murrayfield has shattered dreams in the past, especially when the odds were stacked against Scotland. They will be down from the Highlands en masse for the 3pm kick-off.

Ireland have high hopes of the Grand Slam having beaten Scotland 26-5 last year, but home venue will spur on Scotland who are also in search of the Triple Crown.

The Scots have already beaten England and Wales. Ireland v Scotland has been evenly matched since their first encounter in 1877, but in recent years Ireland have been dominant, winning 12 of the last 14 encounters.

It is all to play for tomorrow at Murray-

field, the graveyard of some high hopers in the past. 2013 and 2017 caught Ireland napping. Beware the Ides of March, lads. Julius Caesar, the Roman emperor, lost his life on March 15, but that was a long time ago. Nevertheless, tabhair aire agus bígí curamach.

Head coach Andy Farrell has instilled great confidence in this winning Irish squad and the expertise and fighting spirit of Paul O’Connell, an Irish great of the not-too-distant past, is very obvious in his role as defensive coach.

The late, great Moss Keane, the larger-than-life Irish international from Currow, often said this to me: “They (Scotland) are not like the ‘other crowd’. A lot like ourselves, plenty rocks and rain. They are tough devils and they win when you least expect them.”

Well, that was the gist of Moss’ verdict; his language was more colourful, salacious and earthy. Direct quotes from the lion-hearted Kerry giant so loved by the Irish followers would not sit nicely in print in English or as Gaelige.

No joy for Kerry at Healy Park where Tyrone came with a powerful second half to earn both league points, lifting them out of their previous run of defeats and now pitching Kerry, the All-Ireland champions, into a possible relegation fight.

Possible? Yes, certainly. Probable? No. Kerry have two games left, at home to Roscommon at Tralee and the final round game away to Galway. Jack O’Connor will be very disappointed that they lost the Tyrone game. He hadn’t bargained for a must-win game in Tralee and will hope that they still will not be pressured into seeking a win or draw away to Galway.

They will beat a lively, in-form Roscommon team. Notice how Listowel native Conor Cox came on to score a great goal against Mayo. He was hovering on the Kerry panel some years ago but could never stake a real claim in the squad. Kerry management believed they had better players. It will make the game in Tralee very interesting.

These tough league matches are a godsend for Kerry, played at near championship fever and fervour, the ideal preparation for July in Croke Park. We all hope that Jack’s Army will be back to defend Sam on that All-Ireland final day. There will be many twists on the road. We’ll be giving our opinions on that saga as it unfolds.

Killarney Legion GAA

CLUB AWARDS NIGHT: The Club Awards Night is scheduled for Friday, March 24 in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. In the weeks between here and then we will be announcing the winners in the different categories. We begin with the Senior Player of the Year and the recipient of the John O’Grady Cup is Darragh O’Doherty. Having burst onto the scene in 2015 as an 18-year-old Darragh has been a popular and integral member of the Senior panel. By his own admission he didn't enjoy the best of seasons in 2021 but 2022 saw him return to his true form. A tough tackling defender he possesses an innate ability to read the game and be in the right place at the right time. Now in his mid-20s he is also displaying leadership qualities, a point emphasised by his appointment this year as Senior team Captain. Off the field he is not shy of work either, integral to any fundraising efforts and also very giving of his time to all club activities. Fair to say Darragh Dots O’Doherty is a worthy winner of the Senior Player of the Year. The Jim Trant Trophy is presented to the young player who has caught the eye in the year just past.

Sam Benson is the 2022 recipient of the Young Player of the Year and there's no doubt his late grandparents, Michael Doc and Carmel O’Donoghue, are looking down proudly on his efforts. A Special Recognition Award will be presented to club member and International Athlete Sarah Leahy.

Dr Crokes GAA

EK SUPERLEAGUE: Dr Crokes 2-16 Listry 0-06. Another win for our Senior Mens team in the East Kerry Superleague gave us 4 wins out of 4 which means we now qualify for the final v Kilcummin on March 12 at 2pm. The game got off to a slow start with the sides level at 2 points each after 15 minutes of play. Listry played their best football in the first half and trailed by just 2 at the half time break. Dr. Crokes 0-06 Listry 0-04. We took control of the second half and dominated from start to finish. Our goals coming from David Shaw and Cillian O’Regan. This was a great team performance. It was great to see Gavin White lining out in the black and amber after recovering from a long injury.

MFL: Dr Crokes 5-16 Kerins O’Rahillys/ St. Pat’s 4-10. A quick start set us on our way to picking up our first win in the County League. With the match being played 13 a side, it allowed for an open game which took a very hard-working team performance. Strong defensive displays from Muiris O’Donoghue and Nathan Cronin, Neil O’Carroll’s high fielding and strong running, along with the clinical finishing of Mark O’Carroll, Liam Hennigan and Ben Kelliher gave us a solid win.

ACADEMY: The academy returned on March 4 and continues every Saturday thereafter. We cater for Boys and girls aged 4 to 11 from the Killarney area. Hurling from 10-11 and football from 11.15-12.15.

showed great resolve to continuously chip away at the lead. The game ended Firies 3-11 to Fossa 3-15, Ted O’Gorman to the fore with the scores, ably assisted by Cathal Breen. However, to come back with the score at half time shows that everyone put in the effort, well done lads.

LADIES: Our U14 Ladies kicked off their season this fresh February evening with a challenge match at home against Naomh Abán Lgfa who made the trip down from Baile Bhúirne, Co. Cork. Mìle buìochas don chuairt ar Fossadh agus an cluiche maith spòirtùil.

COUNTY MINOR LEAGUE: Kilcummin 1-8 Ardfert 1-7. This was a hard-fought but deserved victory over Ardfert in Kilcummin on Saturday last. Despite an early setback of conceding a goal they battled back well and with Sean Doolan unerring from frees they trailed by a single point at half time. In a second half that saw scores hard to come by a goal by Sean Doolan following great work by Aaron Buckley was crucial while late points by Keelan O’Shea and Sean O’Leary sealed the victory. MID KERRY SENIOR LEAGUE: Hard luck to our Senior side who fell short against near neighbours Laune Rangers in the Mid Kerry Senior Football League

Semi-Final on Sunday afternoon. First half goals from Cathal Moriarty and Jerome Flynn kept us in the contest at half-time as Laune Rangers kicked 1-9 with their goal coming from Stephen Sealy. The visitors led by four points at the interval and deservedly so on the basis of their opening half performance. Milltown/Castlemaine tried hard to force their way back into the contest in the second half with pointed efforts from Eanna O'Connor, Sean Hogan and Conor Spillane but short a number of regulars it never looked likely as Laune Rangers matched Milltown/Castlemaine score for score in the second period to run out four-point winners. They will now advance to the Mid Kerry League Final next weekend against Beaufort.

MINIS ENJOY TRIP TO KILLORGLIN RFC: Last Saturday our Minis enjoyed a short road trip to Ballymalis to take on Killorglin and Listowel in the final West Munster blitz. A fantastic morning of rugby and a huge thanks to Killorglin for the fantastic hospitality. We also held a Girls only day, organised and run by our U10 coach Liam Murphy, for current and new girls to come along and play rugby and it was a huge success.

U14 BOYS: Munster Cup Killarney RFC 12 Waterpark RFC 10.

U16 BOYS: Munster Cup Quarter final Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne 13 Killarney RFC 13. Playing a place in the last 4 in Munster and draw from home wasn't sufficient for our lads. With scores tied at the end of the game - the verdict went to the team scoring the first try (number of tries scored being equal). Unfortunately, for us that was RCD. Killarney opened the scoring with a penalty to lead 3-0. RCD replied in similar manner, and a second penalty pushed our lead out to 6-3 at half time. Early in the second half, Corca Dhuibhne scored the decisive try. We replied with a Bryan Walsh interception to level score but at the final whistle with the score tied at 13-13, the team scoring the first try advanced. Though unbeaten, they exit the competition. Nevertheless, reaching the top 8 in Munster is no mean feat.
