PAGESIX Hotels accepting large amounts of refugees and asylum seekers into their premises risk destroying the town’s tourism industry - councillors said this week. | By Sean Moriarty Concerns have been raised as to the future of the town's tourism industry come March or April next year following the large influx of refugees which they say is having a detrimental effect on businesses in the town centre.

Councillors raised the issue during a respectful debate at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

Killarney is currently home to 572 International Protection applicants, and a further 1,300 Ukrainians fleeing from their war torn country also housed in the town.

This marks an approximate 10 percent increase in the town’s population, putting core services like schools and healthcare facilities under considerable extra pressure.

Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan asked the meeting if Killarney Municipal District would: “Write to the relevant Minister to ask for a plan in relation to the resettling of asylum seekers to Killarney and the support structures that are in place as our town is struggling to cope with the influx in terms of GP services etc.”

He also asked if the KMD would: “Write to the Minister for Finance to ask for a

plan for the business community in Killarney that is struggling to survive after the Government decision to remove more beds from the tourism system and thus reducing the footfall and spending power. This is a decision taken by this Government that directly affects our business.”

These two requests prompted a lively debate within the Council chamber.

While all elected members understood the need to offer help to those fleeing difficult circumstances in their home countries, they said something needed to be done too to protect Killarney’s tourism offering in the future.

“Where are they going to go? The country can’t cope right now and more people are coming. What’s going to happen in March or April? Are these businesses going to put these people out?” Cllr Brendan Cronin said.

“We must look within at our business sector also because you can’t take with one hand and expect it’s all going to be rosy next March or April.”

Cllr Marie Moloney warned that the system is at breaking point and that the town will not be able to cope. She said this is not fair on both those seeking refuge and town’s residents.

CONCERN: Cllr Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan warned that the influx of refugees is having a knock on effect on smaller businesses.

“We cannot bring people from the Ukraine into Killarney and then not be able to provide the services. They are going from one hell to another,” she said.

However, she pointed equal blame at the business people of the town who are continuing to accept refugees – a potential off season boost for such businesses – but one with long-term ramifications for the tourism industry.

“They are the ones that are actually destroying the tourism trade in town by

cutting down on the bed nights,” she added.

Cllr O’Callaghan warned that the influx of refugees is having a knock on effect on smaller businesses, like cafés and bars who are not getting the same footfall as usual. He cited the recent closure of two town centre cafés as an example of how businesses are suffering.

“The decisions being taken are taking more bed nights out of the town. A lot of it is greed,” he said.

People now living in fear | By Sean Moriarty People are living in fear as a result of a large number of males acting aggressively in Killarney town.

A video was widely shared on social media showing women being harassed by a group of men - believed to be asylum seekers - who were also engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour on College Square in recent days.

According to the Department of Children, Equality Disability, Integration, and Youth there are almost 600 International Protection applicants (asylum seekers) living in various accommodation centres in Killarney.

Outside of Dublin, county Kerry has the highest number of refugees and asylum seekers nationally which currently stands at 4,708.

The town has hosted International

Protection seekers for the best part of 20 years but that has increased dramatically in recent weeks due to the Government's commitment to house an uncapped number of refugees.

There was widespread controversy last month when Ukrainian families

were given 48 hours’ notice to leave a hotel to make way for hundreds of male asylum seekers.

After a public outcry, the decision to move the Ukrainian families was reversed.

However, it has since transpired that

the 217 male asylum seekers were also taken into a hotel in town, as well as 100 women and children.

“Nowhere else would take the asylum seekers, no one,” Mayor Niall Kelleher told this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

Since the arrival of the most recent group of International Protection seekers locals have expressed their concerns for their own safety.

Several readers have contacted the Killarney Advertiser outlining their concerns while several more have been in touch with their local councillors.

“I know for a fact that there are people actually afraid to walk the streets or walk down along the road. I’m not being dramatic. I’m telling you the truth,” Cllr Marie Moloney told this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

“They [the new arrivals] are the ones causing all the trouble. They are not respecting our town. There are people afraid to walk down the Park Road,” Cllr Donal Grady told the Killarney Advertiser.

St Finan’s social Killarney still has housing too costly that golden touch | By Sean Moriarty

Converting St Finan's Hospital into social housing would be “cost prohibitive” according to one senior Kerry County Council engineer.

The future of the landmark building which has been vacant since 2012 was up for discussion again at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

Last February TD Peter Burke, Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage visited the site. He said at the time, citing St Joseph’s House, Manor Hill in Waterford City as an example, that the old hospital could be turned into apartments.

This has now been ruled out by Kerry

County Council despite a shortage of one and two bedroom accommodation in the wider Killarney area.

“Refurbishment costs are very prohibitive to turn in to social housing,” engineer Frank Hartnett told this week’s meeting.

Meanwhile, on the request of Cllr Marie Moloney, the Council will write to the National Valuation Office to seek the valuation of the HSE St Finan's lands.

The idea being that some, if not all of the outside property, could be used to build houses. The first step in this latest plan would be to get the purchase cost of the lands.

It is understood that the HSE is only interested in selling the entire parcel of land, including the hospital, and is not interested in sub-dividing the property.

| By Michelle Crean Killarney’s remarkable gold medal performance in this year’s national Tidy Towns competition should be a source of great pride to everybody in the town, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has said.

This year the hard working group increased its overall mark by nine points, to 361.

Competition judges were more than impressed by the high standard of upkeep and presentation in the town saying they were "very impressed at the small volume of fresh litter" that they saw.

Other comments included the KASI community garden which they said was "very impressive and where great crops of vegetables, fruit trees and fruit bushes are grown beside stunning floral displays", adding that the "the bin storage units at Chapel Lane with the colourful murals make the area bright and inviting".

There were a few negative points however, from weed growth to too many 'Bee Friendly' signs.

"You have installed addition ‘Bee Friendly’ signs throughout the town ….don’t overdo the installation of signage as remember it’s the streetscape or natural area we want to see not signage and their associated poles!"

Chamber President Niall Kelleher thanked and congratulated all the

businesses, residents’ associations, community groups and individuals who have played their part in ensuring Killarney is presented in the best possible light.

Mr Kelleher also thanked all those involved in the local Tidy Towns committee for volunteering their services for the weekly clean-up work throughout the year and, he said, it made all the difference when the adjudicators paid their annual visit.

“The outdoor staff in the Killarney Municipal District Council area, led by Noel O’Leary, are a real force to be reckoned with when it comes to polishing the jewel in the crown of Kerry tourism," he said.

“The work that they do on a daily basis has to be seen to be believed. They are a tremendously dedicated bunch of workers and Killarney owes them an enormous gratitude.”

Johnny McGuire from Killarney Tidy towns also praised the volunteers and Council staff.

"On behalf of the volunteers we'd like to acknowledge the fantastic work of the outdoor staff of Kerry County Council who we have the great honour of working with."

He added that it's also bittersweet without Yvonne Quill who passed away in September.

"I would like to acknowledge Yvonne's great contribution over the years.

It's the first time without her in 25 years and it's a huge void. She is sadly missed by all the volunteers."

Lewis Road junction works to start next week | By Sean Moriarty The new left turn only exit from Lewis Road on to the existing Killarney by-pass will be in operation

by Christmas.

Works placing bollards in the centre of the road, forcing traffic to head to the Cleeney Roundabout and make

a u-turn, could start as early as next week after a contractor was appointed this week.

“We will be placing a number of bollards in the centre, all in the name of safety,” Paul Curry of the National Roads Design Office in Castleisland told Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District Meeting. “It will start next week – we do not want to impact on

the Christmas traffic.”

However, Mr Curry added that the left turn only was an interim measure ahead of a much bigger scheme on the Lewis Road.

Plans to make the exit from the Kilcummin/Coolcorcoran side of the bypass will not go ahead at this time.

The Council is in the process of acquiring land near this junction to allow for

the re-alignment of the junction there and to build a new roundabout further east on the by-pass to accommodate Kilcummin traffic.

“We are making good progress with land acquisition for the main scheme,” he added.

“Hopefully we can secure the land in the next two months.”

Volunteers sought for Team Hope appeal | By Michelle Crean It's that time of year again when kind-hearted locals gather together gifts for children less well off around the globe.

Local volunteers for the Team Hope Shoebox Appeal are working hard putting the boxes together but they're seeking more volunteers to help out.

So far over 200 boxes have arrived at the new check-in centre in O'Connor's Unit on the grounds of St Finan's Hospital, which was the former admissions office.

This week Sheila Rice, co-ordinator for the Team Hope Shoe Box Appeal, visited Lissivigeen NS to collect their boxes and is encouraging everyone to have them ready before the November 14 deadline.

More volunteers will be out and about in the next week or two to pick up the shoe boxes from schools and other community groups. However, locals are encouraged to drop in to the check-in centre to drop theirs off.

Other drop off points include Daly's SuperValu on Park Road, Dealz in Deerpark, The Works at the Outlet Centre, O'Donoghue's Shop Barraduff and Hickeys Centra Rathmore.

"We have about 200 boxes so far as a few schools had them done before the Hallowe'en break," Shelia told the Killarney Advertiser.

"I'll be going around to schools, as will other volunteers to collect them. The check-in centre is also open from next week. If anyone wants to volunteer they can contact me on 087 7932482."

Camera club to host Time to honour the exciting exhibition McShains' contribution to Killarney town

Images taken through the keen eye of amateur photographers will feature in a new and exciting exhibition tomorrow (Saturday).

As part of its 21 year celebration, Killarney Camera Club will be launching its '21st Anniversary Exhibition' at Killarney House at 2.30pm with Mayor of Killarney, Niall Kelleher, in attendance as guest of honour.

The club was established in 2001 by a group of local photography enthusiasts. It offers a warm welcome to everyone with an interest in photography, from complete beginners to those with many years experience of using a camera, and the club's activities include invited speaker nights, outings, competitions and project nights.

"The club is delighted to have the opportunity to mount its 21st Anniversary Exhibition in the beautiful venue of the Garden Room at Killarney House," Deirdre Donohue from the club said.

"The club members hope that the images in the exhibition convey their deep appreciation of the wonderful landscapes, seascapes, wildlife and cultural heritage of county Kerry - a place any photographer is blessed to call home."

A committee is to be established to find a way to honour the McShain family and their incalculable contribution to Killarney.

John McShain was a millionaire Irish American construction magnate.

Among his achievements were the construction of the Pentagon and the completion of the White House in Washington DC. In the late 1950s McShain joined a consortium that had purchased the 25,000 acre estate of the Earls of Kenmare.

His partners sold their shares to him in 1959, at which time he took over lands that included Killarney House, the ruins of Ross Castle, Glena Mountain, and two of the famous lakes including Loch Leane.

In 1973 he signed over most of his properties to the Irish State – what is now Killarney National Park.

They handed the remainder of their property, Killarney House, over to the State also and that period building has become a tourist attraction in its own right. John died in 1989 and his wife Mary in 1999. Next year will mark the

35th and 25th anniversaries of their respective deaths and the Council wants to mark the occasion with a permanent remembrance to the McShains.

Cllr Marie Moloney raised the issue at this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

“I am asking Killarney Municipal District to set up a committee of Executive, Elected Members and a number of interested members of the public to determine the most fitting and appropriate way to honour the late great John McShain for what he has done for Killarney,” she said.

Áras Phádraig masterplan approved Plans for the redevelopment of Áras Phádraig on Lewis Road, were given the go ahead by elected councillors this week. | By Sean Moriarty However, some had reservations about the inclusion of a HSE Primary Care Unit within the project.

Plans for the site, which has been idle since the Franciscan Friars donated it to the people of Killarney in 2009, were approved by elected members at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District Meeting.

Councillors were told that the inclusion of

the Primary Care Unit was a redline issue as without it funding under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund would not be forthcoming for the entire project.

This did not sit well with elected councillors. Many felt that the HSE had enough of land lying idle within the town already.

St Finan’s was given as an example.

They even sought to delay voting on accepting the masterplan put forward by Kerry County Council on Wednesday to

allow more time to discuss issues with the HSE. “If we don’t proceed with the primary care centre, this project won’t proceed, it is an intricate part of the funding,” John Doyle, a senior engineer with Kerry County Council told the meeting. “It is important that we adopt this plan.”

Additional plans include a theatre, an outdoor public plaza, office space, and a 392-space car park.

The project is being funded by the Urban Regeneration Development Fund for Killarney which was announced in March last year. A total of €21 million has been

set aside for the regeneration of the town centre of which Kerry County Council is providing €5.5m.

There remains a faint hope that a multi-storey car will be included in future plans at Áras Phádraig but as of Wednesday there is no funding available for this element of the project.

Official documentation, circulated at the meeting and seen by the Killarney Advertiser, said: “However, given the overall objective to provide the multi-storey car park in Killarney, the masterplan includes provision for this multi-storey car park as an objective to be pursued.”

MASTERPLAN: The Áras Phádraig masterplan was approved by councillors this week.

Students learn all about European politics | By Michelle Crean Visiting the "capital the European Union" was one exciting trip for local students as they got to see world politics first hand.

Over three very busy days, Transition Year students from St Brigid’s Secondary School, learned about the work of an MEP, the functioning of the European Parliament and Ireland’s place in the EU. Their programme included information sessions, tours and briefings at the European Parliament and the Irish Representation to the Council of the EU. They were under the guidance of Killarney man and MEP for Ireland South and leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament, Seán Kelly. He brought them, and other students from Ireland South, there to experience the EU Parliament first hand after winning the annual ‘Meet Your MEP’ essay competition.

Those that travelled wrote winning entries on the question ‘How will the EU adapt to the effects of climate change?'.

“I am very pleased to have had the opportunity to welcome such engaged and enthusiastic students to Brussels to learn about the inner workings of the EU institutions and my work as an MEP," Mr Kelly said.

"Approximately 70% of Irish legislation originated from EU law. The work we do here in Brussels has real impact on the day-to-day lives of Irish people, and as we deal with more shared challenges - like climate or health for example - decision-making at EU-level will become even more important.

For this reason, I am passionate about engaging young people in the EU. This trip was an opportunity to show students first-hand what it means to be an EU citizen, and it has proven to be extremely successful.”

During their tour of the Parliament, the students were asked what they hope for the future of the EU, Aoibhin Kelly, St Brigid’s Secondary School, said she hoped for “peace across the EU”.

“Pre-COVID-19, I organised the TY essay competition annually,” Kelly explained. “I am delighted to have it back up and running. A personal highlight from the trip was meeting with each student and hearing them present their ideas on the future of EU climate and energy policy. I was incredibly impressed with their detailed knowledge

on conservation efforts, the EU energy union and renewable technologies.

Our children and grandchildren will inherit the world we leave behind, it is essential that we give them a voice on such issue."

MEP Kelly will attend COP27 this weekend as a member of the delegation from the Parliament’s Industry, Energy and Research committee.

"As I told the TY students following their presentation, I will take the ideas that they shared with me to COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.”

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

Ambitious Prince Charming proves he has The Voice UK ​​​ Next week he'll appear on stage playing the lead as Prince Charming - but Killarney student David Lynch has just completed the first round of auditions for The Voice UK! The Killarney Community College student has some real talent and it was double the excitement when I visited the school for their promo panto shots for their upcoming production of 'Cinderella'.

Just back from the first round of auditions for The Voice UK - I was bursting to hear about the audition process and his first attempt at applying.

“I didn’t apply at all Marie," David explained.

"The team sought me out through my TikTok account would you believe! At first I thought it was through my busking post on the streets of Tralee, but once I had time to think about it, the post that got the most views on my account was Viva La Vida by Cold Play. It had over 32,000 viewings. I had tagged my sister Emma, who is away at college, on this performance, and gave it the hashtag #fyp (For You Page). I couldn’t believe it. I processed my application with three demos and, sure enough, the production team came back to me with a date. Soon my dad and I were off to Manchester, thanks to my sister Emma who booked the flights instantly on receiving the exciting news.”

Both David and his dad Mike travel to Killarney Community College (KCC) from Tralee. Mike is a PE and Maths teacher there and David is in Second Year. He is currently cast as ‘Prince Charming’, the lead role, in the school's upcoming panto alongside Cinderella, played by Amy Healy. It takes place on stage at the school next week on November 8 and 9.

“My sister Emma attended KCC too, so I

"We stayed close by at the Premier Inn, a stone's throw from the set of Coronation Street. So well organised, I think there were four auditions per hour with two people on the adjudicating panel. I thought to bring my guitar but I might as well have brought a third person as the price was pretty much the same. I did think there would be an option of instruments available which there was thankfully. Apart from two guys on sound, the two adjudicators and dad and I, that

was it. I was there and ready to perform.

When asked for my backing track I asked for the use of their piano. A deep breath and just a few bars in, all I could hear was CUT! I thought, that’s it, I’m done! Thankfully not the situation at all. It was merely a quick tweak on the outage of sound and I was back again banging out Cold Play's ‘Viva La Vida’ to the very best of my ability. From start to finish, I was happy with my performance.”

"And did you have another song prepared if they asked you to give them a feel for something else?" I asked.

“There was a lot of whispering going on Marie and they did, they asked me to sing another song. Although I am a huge fan of Ed Sheeran, I didn’t submit any of his songs. As I left Killarney Community College and Prince Charming himself, David added “I’ll be delighted if I get through to the next round Marie. Put it this way, if I get through to the next round I’ll let you know. I will surely be taking Emma with me this time but only on the condition she promises to stay well away from Pennys!” David laughed, but all the while he was hugely sincere about the terms and conditions.

Shock and sadness at the passing of Pádraig Harnett There was widespread shock and sadness across the town this past week when the news broke that Pádraig Harnett had passed away suddenly. | By Sean Moriarty The popular club official and sports journalist died on Thursday evening last (October 27) in University Hospital Kerry after a short illness.

There was no aspect of Killarney sporting life that did not have Pádraig’s fingerprints on them.

While best known for his role in soccer throughout the county, he was also heavily involved in basketball, cycling and motorsport.

He held almost every role possible within the ranks of Killarney Celtic FC, including chairman.

Nationally, he represented Kerry at the Football Association of Ireland’s General Assembly and was one of the driving forces behind the foundation of Kerry Football Club which will play League of Ireland football next season – the first Kerry team do so.

Locally Pádraig was Press Officer for the

Kerry Schoolboys and Girls League.

“We lost a friend, a companion, a mentor, and a big brother to us all,” said Aidan Murnane, Chairperson of the Kerry Schoolboys/Girls League.

Pádraig was also popular in basketball circles and Scotts Lakers (St Paul's) held a minute's silence ahead of its game on Saturday night.

He was also the Kerry Area Basketball Board PRO. Without doubt, he was the county’s cycling expert and a familiar face at all the big events like the Rás Tailteann and Ras Mumhan when they passed through the county.

As a sports journalist he worked for Radio Kerry, the Tralee Advertiser and Kerry’s Eye, and was a frequent contributor to the Killarney Advertiser.

Ukrainians experience their first ever Hallowe'en For Ukrainians, celebrating Hallowe'en is not a tradition.

In Ukraine, people celebrate more for Christmas than they do for Hallowe'en. It is then that children change into costumes of biblical characters and go from door to door singing carols and glorifying the birth of Christ. Adults reward children's groups with sweets and money. | By Natalya Krasnenkova “But once we were in Killarney, we couldn't help but join in the celebration of a new holiday for us, this will be our first Hallowe'en, we must spend this evening unforgettable,” thought the Ukrainians from Innisfallen Hotel.

As early as noon on October 31, little Ukrainians in traditional costumes were knocking on the doors of the rooms at the Innisfallen Hotel, shouting "trick or treat"! All the adults were ready and generously gifted the children with sweets. For example, several skeletons, several ghosts, a couple of witches and scarecrows in pumpkin masks knocked on my door during the day!

But the real event unfolded at the Innisfallen Hotel in the evening. Then the adults prepared a performance for the children in which the evil pumpkin

monster came to feast on the children.

The forces of good together with the children had to go through quests and guess all the riddles in order to defeat the pumpkin monster. The children really enjoyed running around the hotel and looking for clues to solve the riddles. The hotel was filled with children's laughter, noise and happy exclamations when another mystery was solved. As a team, the children were able to defeat the pumpkin monster played by Vasyl Melnychuk.

He not only came up with the scenario of the holiday, made a costume, but also expertly carved the head of the pumpkin monster. In Ukraine, Vasyl worked a lot as a wood carver, so he skilfully performed carving.

Farranfore to Killarney route to be revealed within weeks | By Sean Moriarty The preferred route corridor for the construction of the new Killarney to Farranfore road could go on public display as early as the end of this month.

Paul Curry of the National Road Design Office in Castleisland, told Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting that initial route surveys have been completed by his office.

Four potential routes for the N22 Farranfore-Killarney project were identified and were put out to public consultation in May 2021. These have now been whittled down to just one.

Documents prepared by Mr Curry’s office have been submitted to senior Transport Infrastructure Ireland engineers for peer review.

Once they release the documents the new road layout will go on public display in the Great Southern Killarney within “the next four to five weeks”, Mr Curry told Wednesday’s meeting.

“We hope to have it on display in the hotel by the tail end of November,” he said. “This will allow interpersonal interaction.”

The project will then move to design stage early next year. This stage will also include increased interaction with landowners and residents affected by the project.

ROUTE: The preferred route corridor for the new Killarney to Farranfore road could go on public display at the end of the month.

Business bursary awarded to fledgling business A popular artisan ice cream company founded 2019 has received a boost with a bursary from Three Ireland. | By Michelle Crean Muckross Creamery is one of 10 winners of Three’s Grant for Small Businesses 2022, securing a portion of a €100,000 bursary to enable them to scale production and increase recruitment.

Run by John Fleming with the help of his family, the fledging business with a green ethos, managed to survive the pandemic and has seen huge business growth.

John is a fifth-generation dairy farmer from Muckross. In 2019 he and his family started making ice cream using their own fresh milk, cream and free-range eggs.

The business sources all ingredients from local suppliers, as well as providing fully sustainable packaging, and are part of the Kerry Social Farming initiative.

Following high demand from the hospitality industry, this funding will assist in the purchasing of a new ice cream machine, allowing the business to increase

production scales and grow further.

This bursary will be made up of a combination of cash, connectivity solutions from Three Ireland, as well as professional advice and support from Three Ireland’s expert business advisers.

"We received €5,000 in cash and €5,000 worth of business coaching and connectivity solutions," John told the Killarney Advertiser.

"We are delighted to get it. We started in 2019 and didn't know if it was a runner, then COVID hit but it has all kicked on and gone from strength to strength. We only have a small production facility and demand has grown."

He said they have future plans to grow the business.

"Expanding the production facility is the number one aim," he added.

"We also have a pop up ice cream parlour in the old cottage and we're looking to expland that also."

Gavin was praised for his excellent performance, talent and collaboration in his role as apprentice with Bus Éireann.

Ireland’s national bus company, has celebrated its employees’ achievements in 2022 at the regional annual Go the Extra Mile Awards, which recognise excellent customer service, community impact, performance and forward-thinking.

Awards were issued in a number of different categories including Driver of the Year, Depot of the Year, Supervisor of the

Year and Apprentice of the Year.

"I am incredibly proud of our team of committed and dedicated employees in the Southern Region who ‘go the extra mile’ for our customers every day,” said Aled Williams, Bus Éireann Senior Operations Manager, South. “I would especially like to recognise Gavin O’Sullivan who has been awarded Apprentice of the Year for his demonstration of Bus Éireann’s core values. Plans for international karate competition next summer | By Sean Moriarty Killarney will host an international karate competition next July.

Kerry Shotokan Karate School is organising the tournament in Killarney Sports Complex on the weekend of July 29-30 next year.

It will be the school’s second time hosting an international meeting following on from its Killorglin event in 2011.

However, this time around the school hopes to make it into an annual event.

Officials recently attended the World Championships in Poland.

“The world competition in Poland inspired us to host an international karate event in July next year. We are thinking of doing something similar to what they did in Poland but bigger and with cash prizes to attract delegates

and professional athletes from Ireland, Europe and the rest of the world.

It is guaranteed that this competition was never done before in Ireland. This in turn should bring significant revenue to the whole Killarney town both locally as well as attract more tourists from abroad,” Charles Neri the Chief Sensei with Kerry Martial Arts School, said.

“We are well capable of running an international event professionally as we did back in 2011. With the help of the national and world bodies that we are affiliated with we are hoping to run this event on a yearly basis, once it gets popular and we are hoping that it will be a national event in the coming years. This will be an amazing opportunity for our young Kerry athletes to participate in international level events instead of travelling abroad.”

Two new Kerry greenways officially opened Two parts of the Kingdom of Kerry Greenways network were officially opened on Friday last.

The 16km Listowel to Abbeyfeale Greenway and the 11km Tralee to Fenit Greenway, which follow the route of former railway lines, are now fully open to walkers and cyclists.

The new projects in Kerry were funded by the Department of Transport and delivered by Kerry County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

In a joint statement, Cathaoirleach of Listowel Municipal District, Cllr Aoife Thornton and the Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, said that "this is a historic day for the county".

"The opening of new two greenway routes not only enhances the reputation of Kerry as a prime location for

walking and cycling infrastructure, it also greatly enhances our tourism offering as well as the local economy.

“We can look forward in anticipation to the development of a new link between these two greenways as well as the development of the South Kerry Greenway and the linking of the various routes which will enable users to enjoy the county’s beautiful landscape,” they said.

N69 LISTOWEL TO ABBEYFEALE GREENWAY

The N69 Listowel to Abbeyfeale section of the Kingdom of Kerry Greenway includes a 16km stretch of greenway from Listowel town centre to the Limerick County Bounds. The Greenway has been developed along a disused railway line and will link to the Great Southern Trail which ex-

tends from Abbeyfeale for 50km into County Limerick. When the Listowel to Fenit phases of the Greenway are complete, it will extend over 90km in length from Limerick to Fenit.

TRALEE TO FENIT GREENWAY The Tralee to Fenit Greenway consists of the construction of a 11.2km Greenway on the Tralee to Fenit old railway line. It stretches from the townland of Ballynahoulort in Tralee to the village of Fenit. The Greenway will provide locals with a sustainable transport corridor linking Tralee town centre and Tralee train station to Mounthawk at Bracker O’Regan Road. It will also give tourists and recreational cyclists a safe route to enjoy the views over Tralee Bay and provide a key link with the trans-European EuroVelo Route.

First €200 electricity credits to appear on bills From Tuesday of this week, the first of three €200 electricity credits inclusive of VAT will be paid directly

to over 2.2 million domestic electricity accounts, including both bill pay and pay-as-you-go customers.

The credit line will appear on bills from the start of November and into December, depending on a household’s electricity supplier and billing cycle.

The credit is automatic; people do not need to apply for it.

The second and third payments will be paid in January/February and March/ April.

Smiling sun caught on camera The sun really looked like it was having a positive day when NASA captured an image of it smiling.

The image by NASA’s space-based Solar Dynamics Observatory shows what looks like a jack-o’-lantern-esque smile on the sun’s surface, but it is in fact showing cooler splotches on the sun’s surface against the heat of the sun.

It also has a similiar resemblance to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the 'Ghostbusters' movie or various snack foods that bear smiley faces.

"Seen in ultraviolet light, these dark patches on the Sun are known as coronal holes and are regions where fast solar wind gushes out into space," NASA's said in a Twitter post.

The dark patches are in fact coronal holes which appear as irregular black spots when the sun is imaged in ultraviolet light or certain types of X-ray images, according to the space agency.

Their magnetic field structure also sets up coronal holes to release streams of solar wind, or charged particles, at speeds of more than 1.6 million kilometres per hour. These winds are powerful enough to reach Earth but this planet’s magnetic field, which acts as a shield, largely deflects solar wind activity, but it can disturb the atmosphere. ulation of Utilities (CRU) shows that the roll-out of the first Government electricity credit in April/May of this year resulted in a decline in the number of domestic electricity customers falling into arrears. National Park guides to go electric Staff working for the National Parks and Wildlife Service within Killarney National Park are set to get electric cars as part of a national environmental scheme.

Electric buses will also be introduced to Killarney National Park in the future.

A pilot scheme in Glenveagh National Park in County Donegal is set to be rolled out nationally.

Currently the NPWS operates five e-vehicles for education and guide staff across the country.

“There are plans to extend the use of such vehicles for all education staff and we are also extending the infrastructure for e-charging points across the entire National Parks network,” Ronan Casey from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage said.

“The introduction of low-carbon, climate protection measures, such as electric vehicles, is very much congruent to our remit. In 2020, two electric buses were secured servicing Glenveagh National Park, thanks to funding from the Rural and Regional Development Fund.

“These buses were the first to enter usage in the Irish transportation network and support the Government’s aims to reduce emissions. The introduction of these electric buses followed on from the successful introduction of e-charging points for members of the public in Glenveagh National Park in 2018.

“Two further electric buses were procured in 2022, one of which is in operation in Glenveagh National Park, with the second one to be delivered to the Western Division of the NPWS later this year.”

Longest passenger train breaks world record A Swiss railway company has broken a World Record for driving the longest passenger train.

At almost two kilometres in length using one hundred carriages and weighing 2,990 tonnes, the record was made in St Moritz.

On Saturday the country's rail industry came together to run the world's longest-ever passenger train in the Swiss Alps town to mark the 175th anniversary of Switzerland's first railway.

The record-breaking 1,906-metre train included 25 new 'Capricorn' electric trains and took almost an hour to cover around 25 kilometres (about 15 miles) over the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Albula Line from Preda to Alvaneu in eastern Switzerland. Its tight curves and steep inclines restricted the train to just 35 km/h, resulting in an hour-long jaunt to cover the distance. A regenerative braking system was employed to control the speed - similar to what is often seen in electric cars.

Thousands of rail enthusiasts were out

along the valley to watch the train wind its way through the Alps.

Renato Fasciati, Rhaetian Railway company director, said the record attempt was intended to highlight some of Switzerland's engineering achievements and to celebrate 175 years of Swiss railways.

Seven train drivers and 21 technicians onboard had to make sure "that all 25 trains do the same accelerating and braking" at the same time, and were all "guided by the first driver," he said.

The 62-kilometre line between Thusis and St Moritz took five years to build despite requiring 55 bridges and 39 tunnels and is a world-renowned masterpiece of civil engineering.

Before it was built in July 1904, visitors had to endure a 14-hour journey in horsedrawn carriages or sledges over rough tracks.

Previous holders of the world's longest passenger train record - Belgium and, before that, the Netherlands - used standard gauge railways through flat landscapes to their advantage.

Priest suspended after controversial remarks The Bishop of Kerry has suspended a priest after controversial remarks made at a Listowel Mass on Sunday.

Fr Seán Sheehy didn't hold back on his views about same sex marriage and people who are openly gay.

He also attacked transgenderism and the HSE claiming they're “promoting promiscuity” for handing out free contraception.

Over 30 parishioners walked out of Mass in St Mary’s Church as a result.

Fr Sheehy, who was filling in for Listowel Parish Priest Canon Declan O’Connor who is away on a parish pilgrimage, is no stranger to controversy as he also had to step aside as acting Parish Priest in Cas-

tlegregory in 2009 after giving a character reference for a convicted sex attacker from Listowel during a court case.

Fr Sheehy also said that Irish politicians who support same sex marriage and are openly gay, such as Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, are “absolutely” going to hell if they “don’t repent on sin and seek forgiveness”.

On Tuesday the Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne, issued the apology for the priest's remarks during his homily.

“I apologise to all who were offended.

The views expressed do not represent the Christian position. The homily at a regular weekend parish Mass is not appropriate for such issues to be spoken

of in such terms. I regret that this has occurred while a parish pilgrimage to the Holy Land is taking place,” Bishop Browne said.

On Wednesday afternoon, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys condemned Fr Sheehy's comments and called for him to apologise and retract the remarks.

“Those are absolutely unacceptable comments, and I'm disappointed to hear that a priest would make comments like that,” Ms Humphreys said.

A defiant Fr Sheehy has since said that the Bishop was “totally wrong” to issue the apology.

“I couldn’t care less really because I know

myself that what I said cannot be disproven by any honest to God Catholic, Christian or Catholic teaching and that’s the bottom line,” he said.

“I think what he is doing basically is, he’s actually sacrificing the truth or he’s muzzling the truth in order to appease people because they don’t want to face reality that they need to face before they die, and that’s a given."

“He [Bishop Browne] should have said to the people, ‘Fr Sheehy was only preaching the truth, that’s it. He’s only preaching the gospel, he’s only preaching the catechism, that’s it’.”

Anxiety in teens is rising: what’s going on?

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), nearly 1 in 3 of all adolescents ages 13 to 18 will experience an anxiety disorder.

These numbers have been rising steadily; since 2012, anxiety disorders in children and teens went up 20%.

WHAT IS ANXIETY?

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness. They are characterised by intense and prolonged feelings of fear, distress, excessive worry, preoccupation, obsessive thoughts, and apprehension. In addition to mental symptoms, those who experience anxiety disorders also exhibit physical symptoms, such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, rapid breathing and heartbeat, and myocardial ischemia.

Anxiety disorders can be classified into sub-groups such as general anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder.

Be aware of the signs of anxiety.

Sometimes children may say that they are anxious, but other times it is less clear - especially as they may not even realise it themselves.

Signs can include: • recurring fears and worries about routine parts of every day life • changes in behaviour, such as irritability • avoiding activities, school, or social interactions • dropping grades or school avoidance • trouble sleeping or concentrating • chronic physical complaints, such as fatigue, headaches, or stomach aches.

Inactivity and increased sitting time are associated with numerous diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome.

Individuals who are affected by an anxiety disorder tend to have large amounts of sedentary time and fail to meet exercise guidelines, which puts them at an increased risk of chronic diseases associated with low physical activity.

We caught up with Eric Kavanagh, Head Chef at the Killarney Park Hotel Introduce Yourself I’m originally from Douglas, Cork and started working in the culinary trade 20 years ago. Following my training, I worked in the Sheen Falls Lodge Kenmare, then went to Australia and then New Zealand. I went on to work in Longueville House 3 AA rosette restaurant and country house for 10 years and then to the Cahernane House before moving to Killarney Park Hotel (KPH). I knew the hotel well as I’d eaten there previously and was really pleased when the job opening came up.

What does your job entail?

I oversee all the kitchen activity for the hotel. We have a team of 14 chefs working across our kitchens. We have a very strong sustainability system in place which I oversee for the kitchen operation as well as overseeing the general running of the kitchen.

What festive dishes are planned at Ross/Park this festive season?

The dishes we will have on will be strongly seasonal and some will be traditional in the bar.

For the restaurant we will have

pheasant ravioli with chanterelles and smoked bacon jus, smoked Lough Neagh eel, smoked fillet of Cronin’s beef, with stout jus.

In the bar we will have traditional turkey and ham with all the accompaniments among other fantastic dishes.

Tell us about some of your local suppliers?

We have Paudie Spillane out in Fossa who supplies us with some of our fish, Mary from Black Hill Farm who supplies our veg and micro herbs, Dingle goats cheese, and Knockatee dairy for our Kerry blue, Gareth Kiely for our edible flowers, Cronin’s for our beef and Ros Carberry pork for our pork belly.

Aside from the food what is the best thing about KPH? It’s the friendly atmosphere of working in an independently owned small luxury hotel and the dedication to high standards.

When do you start getting excited about Christmas?

I love Christmas! It’s when the lights go up in town and you get that sense of Christmas around the place.

What will you be serving for Christmas day at home?

All traditional; my family only want a traditional family Christmas dinner.

What is your ultimate Christmas dinner cooking tip?

Brine your turkey and cook the legs separately from the crown.

Dine in the Dark at Danú

Get ready for a unique gourmet experience this month where diners will be invited to enjoy their meal blindfolded.

On Saturday, November 12 the team at Danú Restaurant at The Brehon will host an exceptional Dine in the Dark evening.

The challenge is part of a national campaign promoted by the National Council for the Blind Ireland (NCBI). Over 200 restaurants across the country are set to take part in this campaign by hosting a Dine in the Dark evening between November 6 and 13 and €10 from every meal will be donated to NCBI. “We challenge our customers to dine in the dark on Saturday November 12. The entire team here in Danú Restaurant are really looking forward to taking part in this fantastic initiative in aid of the National Council for the Blind. Our customers can expect a wonderful dining experience when the taste, textures and flavours of our food will tantalise

the tastebuds,” Sinead McCarthy, General Manager at The Brehon, said.

Without their sight to guide them, guests experience complex tastes, flavours and textures in a completely new and innovative way. Senses are heightened, altering taste, touch, smell and communication during the meal.

Sight loss affects one in six people in Ireland. This event brings people together to raise awareness and vital funds, and of course to have fun.

NCBI is the National Sight Loss Agency.

Their services include emotional support and counselling, low vision solutions like magnifiers, assistive technology advice and training, rehabilitation training including independent living skills and using a long cane, and a large print, audio and Braille library. The organisation also has an online shop

with lots of practical solutions.

Exploring the sea creatures and the impact humans have on the ocean has helped a Killorglin school get top marks in a national programme. | By Michelle Crean The Explorers ‘We Are Ocean Champions’ all-school project by the Marine Institute reached more than 3,500 children nationally with Scoil Réalt na Mara receiving one of the top six awards presented.

The children who received an 'Award of Excellence – Ocean Literacy Creative Project' celebrated their win at a school ceremony on Thursday last.

"The children’s enthusiasm, knowledge, and creative ideas for the future of the marine environment is inspiring and is evident in their class work, from creating musical pieces and models to clean the ocean, to cooking with seaweed," Cushla Dromgool-Regan, Marine Institute Explorers Programme Manager, said.

"The fact that each class contributed to this project was an amazing accomplishment by everyone involved.

Through their ocean literacy project they demonstrated how the ocean impacts all our lives and also the impact we all have on the ocean."

School principal Elaine Kelliher said

they were delighted, not only to have participated in the Explorers programme, but to be Ocean Champions 2021-2022.

“We’re a school based in a rural coastal community situated in the beautiful Cromane," she said.

"This project has served to heighten our awareness of the relationship we have with the sea and in keeping our oceans healthy. For our project ‘We Are Ocean Champions!’, the children created projects based on food, art inventions and music, and participated in seashore safaris on Cromane Beach with LH Sea Synergy marine biologists," she added.

“Their work was displayed in the local beach café, ‘The Boathouse’ which was an opportunity for the community to view the work being undertaken in our school. We would highly recommend the Marine Explorers to all schools.”

The Ocean Champion Project and Awards initiative is led by the Programme Manager, Camden Education Trust.

Details of Historic Rally revealed Killarney and District Motor Club have announced details of their Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally.

Scheduled for December 2 and 3, the rally will form part of the Christmas in Killarney festivities.

It will kick-off on Friday night (December 2) with a ceremonial start in the town centre.

The rally proper takes place on Saturday (December 3) with crews taking to the

traditional stages of Moll’s Gap and Ballaghbeama and Kilgobnet.

“Plans are at an advanced stage now and it is all systems go for the 2022 event. It is a really tough route and anyone who takes home silverware on Saturday will be deserving of their victory,” Clerk of the Course, Anthony O'Connor, said.

“The rally is always used to kick off the festive season in the town and I hope, as ever, the historic rally will give tourism in the town a well-deserved boost ahead of a busy Christmas period.”

Being robbed by the bank This week, inflation in Europe hit 10.7%. Just 12 months ago, this figure was 4.1%.

Painfully high energy and food prices continued to push inflation to record levels. Over the past 12 months, energy prices rose by 41.9%, while food prices increased by 13.1%. With Russia's withdrawal from an agreement that allowed grain exports from Ukraine, grain prices are likely to go up even more.

Of course, we don't need to be told the exact figures. We can see it all around us; the food we buy, the bills we pay.

The precarious balancing act that the ECB now faces is too layered a discussion point for this short article, but it is a fight they are currently losing.

Statements from the IMF this week reiterate this point.

"European policymakers face severe trade-offs and tough policy choices as they address a toxic mix of weak growth and high inflation that could worsen."

As the outlook worsens, the knee-jerk reaction may be to do nothing. But this is not the answer.

One point I have been trying to press home with clients lately is - the price of inaction in the current inflationary environment is immense.

In economics, the Fisher Effect is the tendency for interest rates to change to follow the inflation rate. As inflation rates rise, so too should interest rates, or at least this was the case before the mass amounts of credit in the system made this an unviable option.

Historically, the Fisher Effect held true.

In the late '70s, inflation ripped through economies and in turn, interest rates rose to nearly 20%. Those battling inflation had the ability to offset these rising prices by simply leaving their money accumulate the higher interest rates available in their savings accounts at the bank. Doing nothing was an option.

Since then, things have changed. Bank interest rates in the US reached an all-time high of 20% in March of 1980 before a precipitous decline brought interest rates

to a record low of 0.25% in December of 2008. Europe took it a step further and introduced negative interest rates.

Despite the changing narrative, the old belief that 'your money is safe in the bank' still rings true for many. Unfortunately, the residual advice of a previous generation who benefited from a different economic framework muddies the clarity for many trying to save in this new environment.

What worked for your parents won't work for you. A lot has changed. Simply putting away a little money every week into a savings account isn't enough anymore if you want to be able to function as an independent adult. It's a harsh reality, but it's true.

What you are saving for is rising in price faster than you are saving, so you need to do something to tie yourself to these higher prices.

Take the first step They say the price of inaction is far greater than the cost of making a mistake. This is especially true for so many investors in the current market.

turned roughly 10% annually since 1974.

A far more enticing return than the pennies on offer in your savings account.

Fines to double for 16 Road Safety offences Drivers caught speeding, using a mobile phone whilst driving, or not wearing seat belts will now pay double the fine amount.

The increases were announced by the Minister for State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton.

The fines that are doubling include speeding from €80 to €160, mobile phone use from €60 to €120, non-wearing of seatbelts from €60 to €120 and failing to ensure that a child is properly restrained rising from €60 to €120.

Fines relating to offences committed by learners and novice drivers are also increasing. The fines for a learner permit holder driving a vehicle unaccompanied by a qualified person will increase from

€80 to €160. The fine for novice drivers not displaying ‘L’ or ‘N’ plates (or tabards in the case of motorcyclists) will double to €120.

Minister Hildegarde Naughton also announced that three new Fixed Charge Notices would come into force in the New Year.

These relate to the misuse of a disabled parking permit (€200). Illegally parking in an electric charging bay (€80) and breaching an HGV ban and entering a specified public road without a valid permit (€200).

Liz O’Donnell, Chairperson of the Road Safety Authority, said the fines continue to increase if not paid within 28 days.

"In addition to the fines it is worth remembering that the choice to speed, use a mobile phone while driving or not properly restrain a child could lead to you losing your licence,” she said.

"If you are detected speeding you will receive three penalty points on your licence, if you get 12 penalty points in three years you will be disqualified for six months.

"A lower threshold of seven points applies for learner and novice drivers.”

Change of lending rules welcome Reacting to the announcement by the Central Bank of Ireland that it will be relaxing some of the macroprudential lending rules from January 1, 2023, leading property advisors DNG welcomed the changes, stating that they would be “significant” for the residential property sales market.

The rule changes mean that the Loan To Income (LTI) limit for first time buyers (FTB’s) will be increased to 4 times gross income from 3.5 times, which will help first time buyers struggling to enter homeownership due to affordability constraints. In addition, the Central Bank announced a change to the criteria required for a borrower to be classed as a ‘First Time Buyer’. Borrowers who are now divorced or separated or have

undergone bankruptcy or insolvency may be considered FTBs for the mortgage measures and added to that, buyers who re-mortgage or get a top-up loan where the amount borrowed increases, will also now be classed as first time buyers assuming they remain in their principle private residence.

For Second and Subsequent Buyers (SSB’s) there is also a significant increase in the Loan to Value limit from 80% to 90% meaning that those people wishing to trade up or down, or simply move home will require a 10% deposit as opposed to the 20% deposit needed under the current rules.

This loosening of the macroprudential rules is very significant given they have not been materially changed since their

introduction in 2015. The fact that SSB’s now only require a 10% deposit will help with the return of a properly functioning market and we would expect transaction levels to increase through 2023 and beyond because of this very measure. Far too many homeowners are ‘stuck’ in their current, often unsuitable, accommodation because of this very reason and some of this cohort will soon be in a position to move house.

The ability to trade your home and move house is a very important factor in a functioning housing market and the lower 10% deposit rule will mean that many buyers who want or need to move house for work or other reasons can now do so with a much lower “upfront” financial outlay.

Many people looking to move house have the ability to repay the new mortgage but do not have the capital readily available to meet the 20% deposit requirement.

“These changes will be particularly welcomed by buyers, especially first time buyers in rented accommodation, as this relaxation will assist them to get

on to the housing ladder. Other buyers such as those who are divorced, separated, or have gone through an insolvency process and as a result lost their homes, will also be very relieved to be treated the same as first time buyers," Ted Healy, welcoming the new changes, said.

From today (Friday) the CAO 2023 applications opened for all those looking at their future career choices.

This includes school leavers, those applying to colleges of Further Education, mature applicants and students applying from outside of Ireland.

The CAO processes applications for almost 1,800 courses in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) all over Ireland so there is plenty of choice and there is plenty of time. The normal closing date for applications is February 1 at 5pm but the Online Change of Mind facility opens on May 5 and closes on July 1 at 5pm.

Before registering it is well worth spending some time navigating the CAO website as there are lots of really helpful resources for applicants and parents. They include video guides on all aspects of the application, a guide to the points system, a course search facility, information about restrictions, a list of Open Days in the HEIs, and a comprehensive FAQ section. For anyone who may be eligible for Access Routes linked to the CAO, there is detailed information on the HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) and the DARE (Disability Access Route to Education).

There is no need to panic as you have lots of time to do course research, but my advice is to start the process early. It gets you focused on your career research, helps with goal setting and it will take the pressure off later when you are finalising your decision about course choices, in what is a very busy year!

Our sincere gratitude to all those who sent mass cards, text messages, to those who called in person to our home, to those who travelled long distances to be with us, those who lined the route from her home to the church on the day of the funeral mass and to all who forwarded thoughtful messages and tributes through the RIP.ie Website.

We will forever be indebted to all doctors, nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit in University Hospital Kerry, along with the palliative homecare nurses for the exceptional care, kindness and empathy shown to Phil in her final weeks.

A special word of thanks to Fr. Pat O’ Donnell and Fr. Dan Cashman who concelebrated Phil’s funeral mass and for their touching and meaningful words of comfort. Men from the East prevail in one-sided county final East Kerry made it three county titles in four years with a resounding 1-16 to 0-10 victory over Mid Kerry in Sunday’s Kerry SFC final in Tralee.

Things hadn’t quite clicked for this star-studded East Kerry team in the previous rounds – they barely squeaked through tough battles against Kenmare Shamrocks and Dingle – but everything fell into place for them in the finale.

With newly-crowned Footballer of the Year David Clifford to the fore, ably assisted by a former Footballer of the Year in James O’Donoghue and two-time AllStar Paudie Clifford, the favourites built up a four-point lead by half-time.

When the younger Clifford capped a fine team move with a well-taken goal midway through the second half, East Kerry led by seven and it was game over.

Captain Paul Murphy accepted the Bishop Moynihan Cup on behalf of his team-

mates as the team who were tipped by 84% of our readers to win the competition at the outset fulfilled their potential.

For many on the panel it is their second or third county title at this level, but for the Legion contingent it was a first. This was the first time O’Donoghue and co. were eligible to link up with East Kerry having been demoted to intermediate at the end of last season. Naturally, they will hope they aren’t eligible again next year but they will savour this win nevertheless.

It was a special moment for one of Kerry’s most famous footballing families, the Lynes of Cleeney, as cousins Jonathan and Darragh picked up their first County Championship medals. Their respective grandfathers, Denny and Teddy, were part of the Legion team that won the club’s only county title in 1946.

New Legion officer Joanne wants safe space for all Adam Moynihan speaks to Joanne O’Riordan about her new role with the Killarney Legion The Killarney Legion’s new Diversity and Inclusion Officer Joanne O’Riordan has set her sights on creating a safe space for everyone who wants to join the club, including wheelchair users, asylum seekers and members of the LGBT community.

O’Riordan, a 26-year-old journalist from County Cork, is a wheelchair user herself and is widely know in Irish sporting circles for her work as an inclusivity advocate.

As well as writing for the Irish Times, she also presents A Sporting Chance, an RTÉ documentary exploring women’s sport in Ireland.

She was given a lifetime membership of the Legion in 2014 after a chance meeting with club legend and Radio Kerry broadcaster Weeshie Fogarty.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, O’Riordan said she is “delighted” to be taking up this new position with her adoptive club.

“For me, what it’s about is trying to get more people involved in Legion GAA, and it’s not just people in wheelchairs,” she revealed. “It’s about creating a safe space for LGBT players, refugees, asylum seekers, a whole spectrum of people.

“We’re very fortunate [in the media] that we get to meet an incredible amount of people who do incredible work every day, so I don’t have to reinvent the wheel. I just have to reach out to these people and hope that they can share their expertise and their experiences. Maybe I can rob some of their ideas!”

Although O’Riordan believes that progress has been made in recent years when it comes to inclusivity in the GAA, she still feels there is room for improvement.

“I think the GAA are trying but where they fall down is they literally have one person for this entire job on a national level. That’s very hard for one person to do. I think we fall down there in that regard.

“These messages like ‘give respect, get

respect’ and ‘say no to racism’ get lost.

They’re all just taglines that have no real back-up.

“My niece plays U12 with our local club, Dromtariffe, and she doesn’t see any differences. It’s actually when she goes outside the pitch and she listens to adults talking, she learns that differences do exist and she starts picking up casual remarks. I think that’s really unfortunate.

“It’s about tackling people’s perceptions really, and that’s a very hard thing to do.

When you go to a GAA match you don’t expect to hear a racist or homophobic comment on the sideline… It’s really hard to tell someone that they have an unconscious bias because people don’t like to hear it. They like to believe that they think everybody is equal. It’s about raising awareness from that perspective.

“I think having a safe space to call it out is important too.”

As for her relationship with the Legion, O’Riordan fondly recalls being welcomed into the club seven years ago.

“I was honoured to be interviewed by Weeshie at a golf event in Killarney. That was insane for me. He asked me would I mind coming to Legion for their annual awards ceremony. Then he presented me with lifetime membership, which I didn’t expect.

“I think me and my father bonded with the club more than anything. We liked the players and they were incredibly sound.

They had a good run in 2015, reaching the county final.”

The team’s fortunes have been mixed since: they won the East Kerry Championship in 2019 before getting relegated from senior in 2021. On Sunday they face An Ghaeltacht in the semi-final of the Intermediate Championship. O’Riordan is optimistic.

“As dad says, you’ve got to have a lot of downs to have a lot of ups, so hopefully this year we’ll have another ‘up’.”

In pure football terms, nobody matches Clifford Adam Moynihan on the debate surrounding David Clifford’s place amongst the all-greats For most players, posting 1-9 and being named Man of the Match in a county final would define a career. For David Clifford, it didn’t even define his weekend.

Less than 48 hours before he led East Kerry to another title in Tralee, Clifford was in the Dublin Docklands picking up his fourth All-Star in five attempts. (But for the pandemic, there’s a good chance it would be 5/5.)

He was also crowned Footballer of the Year at the GAA’s end-of-season gala which effectively means that the 23-year-old PE teacher has already achieved all there is to achieve when it comes to intercounty football. His widely predicted ascent to the very top of the game is complete. The Fossa man is the best Gaelic footballer in the country. Or the world, if you want to be American about it.

That much is undeniably true but more contentious is the debate surrounding Clifford’s place amongst the all-time greats.

The reality is that it’s simply too early to judge his legacy and his career just yet.

All going well he could have a decade left in him. Maybe more, maybe less. Who knows what the future will bring for him and for his team, but right now the honours section of his Wikipedia page doesn’t compare with the likes of Colm Cooper and Pat Spillane. It doesn’t even compare with some of the Dublin players who have won it all in recent times.

For this reason, it’s not right to call Clifford the GOAT. I’ve done it myself online in emoji form, for instance when he executed his drag back and finish against Galway in 2021, but I think the term “GOAT” has become less literal and more symbolic over time.

In more real terms, you can’t refer to a player this young as the greatest ever.

As much as he has achieved, he hasn’t achieved enough. He needs to do it again and again and put together a body of work over a longer period to earn that

particular title.

But I will stand over what I said recently, and what I’ve been saying about Clifford for a good while now: he is the best player I’ve ever seen.

At this point you might rightly ask what I mean by “best” and how he can be the “best” but not the “greatest”.

“Best” to me refers to how good he is at football - in the purest form of that notion. Forget the accomplishments and the silverware. Things like that contribute to a player’s legacy but they have no bearing on the simple act of us, as observers, going to a match and watching a footballer on a pitch. How good is Clifford in this regard? To me, he is the best. The way he plays - his skill levels, his technique, his physicality, his creativity, his attitude - I’ve never seen anything like it.

You can make strong arguments for other wonderful players, many of them Kerrymen, who have gone before him, and that’s fair enough. Everyone has their own favourites and, when it boils down to it, judging a footballer is as subjective as judging a painter or a musician or any other kind of artist. Some people like James Corden. There’s no accounting for taste.

But when you really break down and analyse the games of other legendary players, are there many things they were able to do on a pitch that Clifford can’t?

Are there any?

Conversely, are there things Clifford can do on a pitch that they couldn’t?

Again, all-time greats are judged by their careers. Although his place in the pantheon of Kerry legends is already secured, he will only end up as a god of gods if he and the team sample even more success in the coming years.

In pure footballing terms, though, and judging him solely by how he plays the game, I firmly believe that there’s no one better.

Kenneally claims October fantasy football prize Cormac Kenneally was the highest ranked manager in the Killarney Advertiser fantasy football league in October meaning he claims the coveted €50 voucher for The Caddyshack.

Kenneally’s imaginatively named team ‘Manchester United’ picked up 442 points last month, six more than runner-up Cillian O’Regan and nine more than Ryan Murphy in third. The Spa native had Arsenal pair Gabriel Martinelli (16 points as captain) and Martin Ødegaard (10) to thank for a good share of his points in Gameweek 14, with Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier (11) also contributing to his 74-point haul.

Kenneally is now 236th in the overall Killarney Advertiser rankings. Daniel Walsh (899), Roy Hurley (895) and Paul Joy (887) lead the way with Cillian O’Regan and E Walsh completing the top five.

The competitiveness of the Killarney Advertiser league is reflected in the fact that our top two, Walsh and Hurley, are both ranked among the top 100 players in Ireland. Walsh is currently 65th and Hurley is 92nd. Walsh is also ranked 1,373rd in the world out of over 10 million participants.

| Irish trainer criticised for leading horse to the pub

A video of a US Grand National-winning horse being led into The Pint Depot bar in Bagenalstown, Co Carlow made national headlines this past week, and now animal rights activists PETA have slammed the “publicity stunt” as “stressful” and “dangerous” for the animal.

Irish trainer John “Shark” Hanlon brought Hewick into the pub upon arriving home to Ireland following their victory in the $500,000 race in New Jersey in October.

Hanlon shared the video on Twitter himself and another image appeared to show a pint of Guinness being placed under the horse’s mouth.

“Horses are not ‘show and tell’ playthings – they are sensitive animals who are easily spooked,” Elisa Allen, PETA Vice President of UK Programmes and Operations, told CNN. “Anyone with a scintilla of respect for horses knows that a rowdy, cramped pub without an obvious exit is a stressful and dangerous environment for them.”

In response, Hanlon said that precautions were taken to ensure the horse’s safety.

“When bringing him into the pub we double checked everything was safe. We brought him in, turned him around and walked out with him.”

It took Rangers 12 years to make it back to the top table of European football but it wasn’t a happy return for the Glasgow club.

They pocketed millions of euro, granted, but they finished the group stage with a brutal record of six defeats from six games and goal difference of -20 (two goals for and 20 against). Their negative results against Ajax, Liverpool and Napoli mean that Gio van Bronckhurst’s side have exited the competition with worst record in the tournament’s history.

Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia (2011) had previously held the worst record with no points and a goal difference of -19.

Nets fire Nash

after 2-5 start

Former NBA regular season MVP Steve Nash has been fired as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets after a sluggish start that has seen the team slump to a 2-5 record.

With a squad that includes frequent AllStars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, the Nets have the potential to challenge but Nash’s two seasons at the helm were plagued by off-court issues.

Most recently, Irving sparked controversy by tweeting a link to an antisemetic movie that is directed by a holocaust denier. Nash had to make do without Irving for stages during the pandemic as the skilful point guard refused to take the vaccine. (Irving also previously stated his belief that the Earth is flat.)

Star player Durant has been unsettled at Brooklyn while another major cog, James Harden, has since departed the club.

Nash is expected to be replaced by former Boston Celtic coach Ime Udoka, who was suspended from his previous post due to a “violation of team policies”. It was reported at the time that Udoka had a relationship with a team staffer.

Long time member of the club Pádraig served in many positions in Killarney Celtic but most notably as Chairman and PRO. Pádraig also served in many different positions in the Kerry Schoolboys/Girls League, in recent years as Chairman, PRO and fixtures secretary.

Pádraig served on many FAI and SFAI bodies over the years and was well known and well regarded all over the country. As a journalist and broadcaster Pádraig leaves behind a fantastic body of work in a variety of sports. Killarney Celtic extends its deepest sympathy to Pádraig's wife Maura, stepson Seán, brother Brendan and to Pádraig's extended family.

So they will be battle hardened. Ned English and his management have been busy preparing for the game with a series of challenge matches against good opposition and with the return of the East Kerry contingent all should be in good spirits. JOANNE O’RIORDAN: The Club is delighted that Joanne O’Riordan has accepted an invitation to join our Executive Committee in the coming year 2023. Joanne has been an Honorary Life Member since 2015 and joins the committee in an advisory role. Joanne, a native of Millstreet, is a prominent campaigner for disability rights and has addressed the United Nations in New York in 2012 and later that year at the

tender age of 16 she was honoured with the Young Person of the Year Award. In 2015 she was honoured with a JCI Top Outstanding Young Person of the Year Award. She has spoken at conferences all over the world, challenging the stigma surrounding disability.

LADIES COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: This is the first time the U13s, U15s and U17s have represented their District in the county championship. On Sunday last the U13s had a great win against Southern Gaels in Waterville and face North Kerry in the cup semi-final. The U15s are through to the cup semifinal (bye) v West Kerry and the U17s had a narrow defeat to Southern Gaels in Valentia are into the shield final against Tralee District. Next round November 5/6. The Girls were delighted to wear the East Kerry jerseys and wish of course the Seniors the very best of luck for Sunday.

East Kerry GAA KERRY MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Division 2 Final - Rathmore 4-9 Kilcummin 1-7. In a wet and windy in Rathbeg Kilcummin and Rathmore competed for the Tatler Jack Division 2 final. A minute silence started off the proceedings for the great Padriag Hartnett who passed away. Rathmore played with the wind and had a lot of possession and kicked two points. Kilcummin replied with a point Rathmore tagged on two more points and then a great run through the middle and in a great goal from Rathmore. Rathmore were in top in all sections and kicked three more points while Kilcummin added one more point leaving the halftime score Rathmore 1 goal 7 points and Kilcummin no goal 2 points. Kilcummin started the second half with the wind behind the and kicked two great points but Rathmore backs were making things hard for them. Then Rathmore put the game to bed with two great goals.

Kilcummin hit their best patch of the game with 2 goals and 1 point. A goal and 2 piping's for Rathmore who finished strongly. Rathmore were in top in all sections and finished out the game and the score line of Rathmore 4 goals

COUNTY FINAL: Hard luck to the Mid Kerry Senior Football team and management especially our own club representatives in Pa Wren, Eanna O'Connor, Gavin Horan, David Roche, Garry Murphy (Selector), Shane O'Sullivan (Strength and Conditioning) and Liam Doherty (Stats) who lost 1-16 to 0-10 against East Kerry last weekend in the Garvey's Supervalu County Senior Football Championship Final at Austin Stack Park, Tralee. The panel had a great year, winning 5 of their 6 Championship outings and we are all very proud of the lads for their efforts throughout the campaign.

MID KERRY QUARTER-FINAL: Milltown/Castlemaine's Senior side will take on Cromane in the Quarter-Final of the 2022 Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship on Sunday, November 6 (this weekend) at 11.30am in Cromane.

U10 BOYS BLITZ: Milltown/Castlemaine's U10 Boys participated in the John Lynch Memorial Blitz in Connolly Park, Tralee last Saturday, October 29 and had a very enjoyable outing. Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club COUNTY MATCHPLAY: We very nearly had a clean sweep of the Men’s grades in Tralee last Sunday as Damien Fleming (Senior), Adam Kelly (Intermediate) and Daniel Kelly (Junior) made the finals of their respective grades. Damien won his third consecutive senior title with a 1up victory over Jason Cregan of Tralee in the decider while Daniel won the Junior final with a 3&2 win over Newmarket’s Ben Murphy. Adam unfortunately was beaten 3&2 by Listowel’s Bobby McCarron in the Intermediate final.

SPORT NOTES McGrath presented Daniel Kelly with the County Junior Mens Matchplay Cup the pair faced each other in the Club Matchplay Championship final on Monday. Daniel won at the last hole to complete a Club & County Matchplay double for himself after he had beaten Noel Moynihan in the semi-finals while John had beaten Seán O'Brien in the other semi-final. In the Plate Bobby Kelly made it a father and son double after he beat Hugh O’Sullivan in the decider 4&3. Thanks to Murphy’s Bar for their continued sponsorship of the event.

U16 MATCHPLAY: On Sunday at the U16 event (sponsored by Trophyworld Tralee) Brian O'Leary beat Ryan Moloney in the Championship final 3&1 while Noah Sexton won the Plate against Ben Kelliher 1up. Special mention to Cathal Sugrue for a Hole-In-One on the 17th, his first in game. Both Nathan Cronin and Brian McCarthy were the beaten semi-finalists in the Championship event.

CLUB OUTING: Best Wishes to those travelling to Doolin on Saturday for our annual outing to the Clare course where Dermot Tuohy will welcome us with wide open arms after his win in the Limerick Senior Mens Matchplay last Sunday which we congratulate him on.

Killarney Rugby MINIS: For the first time in a few years, our Minis will host the full West Munster Blitz at Aghadoe. We will host teams from U7 to U12 from Tralee, Castleisland and Iveragh and this promises to be a wonderful day of Mini rugby.

So be sure to pop along and support the next generation of rugby stars. The action gets underway at 10am and all welcome.

COURSE: The West Munster Youths Committee are arranging a referees course in the coming weeks are seeking volunteers who are perhaps retired players, past coaches or parents of players who are willing to undertake the course and available to be appointed as referees to underage matches in particular u14 & 16 matches. Killarney RFC fields no fewer than 6 youths teams between boys & girls & all of these teams need referees for their games. Anyone interested please contact Stephen O'Brien on 086 3484337.

Muckross Rowing Club CASTLECONNELL: Well done to all our crews who competed in the annual Castleconnell Head of the River on Saturday last. Undeterred by the rain on the day, the club enjoyed a successful outing, winning the Womens Club Double, Mens J14 Quad, Womens J15 Quad, Womens J14 Double and Womens J15 Single. The club was second in the Mens J18 Quad, Womens J18 Quad, Mens J18 Double, Womens J16 Single (Faye O’Neill), Mens J16 Single (Ian Coffey) and Mens J15 Octuple. The club was third in the Womens J16 Single (Grace O’Connor), Mens Masters Single (Danny Lyne), Womens J16 Quad and Mens Masters Quad. A big club highlight of the day saw a rare feat for a Head event with Muckross placing first, second and third in the Womens J15 Single - congrats to Rachel Fuller, Angelina Kenny and Abigeal Real. Our thanks to Castleconnell Boat Club for organising a great event and to all who helped with the organisation of the club on the day, towing boats, trailer loading on Friday and boat unloading on Sunday.

Killarney Cougars U13 BOYS LEAGUE: Killarney Cougars 32 St Marys Castleisland 30. An exciting game at the Presentation Gym on Tuesday evening saw a late Cougars basket by Luke Clancy secure the win in a very good contest. Cougars had a strong first quarter to lead 11-4 with Callum Cox and Luke Clancy both scoring good baskets. The visitors had the best of the second quarter and trailed by just one point at halftime. A good second half saw the sides go basket for basket with the St Marys looking set for the win after a strong third quarter, only for a strong finish in the closing minutes by the home side secured the win in an entertaining and sporting game. Best for Cougars on this occasion were James O’Callaghan, Jaime Fleming and Luke Clancy.

U18 BOYS LEAGUE: Killarney Cougars 63 St Colmans 54. A good contest in the Presentation Gym needed overtime to separate the sides that finished tied 5050 thanks to a late comeback by the visitors in a game that saw Cougars ahead throughout but the Cougars dominated the overtime period to finish deserving winners. Cougars led 26-20 at half time and looked well positioned going into the last quarter 40-36 but St Colmans thanks to Gearoid Quirke tied the game, but baskets by Mark Daly, Jack O'Driscoll and Nathan Cox ensured a comfortable victory after a close call in normal time. Best for Cougars were Finn Kennelly, Andrew Riordan, Jack ODriscoll and Jack Kelliher.
