Eight month wait for a driving test in Killarney

The current wait list for a test in Killarney sits at eight months.

Cllr John O’Donoghue raised the issue at Monday’s full meeting of Kerry County Council.

He proposed that driving instructors should be employed to carry out the final test to reduce the current backlog. At Monday’s meeting he asked that hat Kerry County Council would write to the Minister for Transport to ask him to consider giving driving instructors tempo-

rary powers to issue a temporary Driving Licence/Certificate of Competence to those on the waiting list for tests.

“The wait is currently far too long and the system is in danger of becoming completely overwhelmed,” he said.

“The huge waiting list for young drivers is well documented at this stage. In a case I am familiar with, a young person passed their theory test in January 2022 and he immediately applied for his mandatory 12 driving lessons. When

these were completed, he applied for his driving test on the 2nd of December 2022. Some weeks ago, he still had not received an application to apply for his driving test. This wait is placing him and his family under considerable extra cost and stress which is completely unacceptable.”

In the course of his research into the matter Cllr O’Donoghue discovered that the next available date for a driving test in Killarney is May 25, 2024, while Tralee is June 3 2024.

“Bear in mind, these are only the dates on which you receive an invitation to book your test, the test itself will then be an estimated three to five weeks later.

Killarney woman to drive sheep over a London bridge to mark her freedom of the city

An Aghadoe woman will celebrate her Freedom of London by driving sheep over a city centre bridge on Sunday. Tara Cronin was awarded the Freedom of the City of London last October.

She earned her award thanks to her tireless charity work which includes her role as the Events and Fundraising Manager with ICAP, an Irish Mental Health charity in London.

She was the founder of the London-version of the Darkness into Light charity walk and is the former long-serving secretary of the Kerry Association. She is also a board member of the Irish Women’s Network.

In 1835 eligibility for the freedom of the city was extended to anyone who lived in, worked in or had a strong connection to London.

“This is an appalling situation and one which needs to be rectified as a matter of urgency. I am proposing that driving instructors, which presumably are fully trained up on the rules of the road, be granted temporary powers to be allowed to issue temporary driving licences to young people. When the waiting list time has been reduced, I would still propose that these people sit the test as usual, but the current pressure needs to be alleviated as soon as possible. There is precedent as I believe that in the 1970s, a cohort in this country were issued driving licences without having sat a test as the wait time for the test was too long.”

These days it is largely ceremonial and bestowed upon people in recognition for their personal achievements and charitable work.

One of the rights connected with the award is permission to herd sheep over Southwark Bridge in the city and Tara is going to exercise that right on Sunday. She will be joined on the day by her parents Jerry and Margaret and brother Eoghan and a group of close friends that will make the trip from Killarney people who have strong Kerry, Mayo and Cork connections to the British capital.

“I feel extremely proud to have been awarded the Freedom of the City of London. It will be a special day and so privileged to be able to share with my parents Margaret and Jerry and my brother Eoghan and family and friends,” she said.

Sunday’s celebration will continue at the nearby Rising Sun, a renowned Kerry pub in the heart of the city.

Developing St Finan’s “cost prohibitive” – Council

Converting the idle St Finan’s hospital into social housing is cost-prohibitive according to Kerry County council officials. The historic building has been lying idle since it closed in September 2012. The hospital and adjoining lands are up for sale by the Health Service Executive

(HSE) since then.

So far no realistic offer has been made on the site despite suggestions that it could be used for social housing, a catering college and a hotel.

Each year the building, which was built in the 1850s, falls into further disrepair. There were fresh calls again this week as local councillors called for some sort of action to redevelop the site that is fast

becoming an eyesore.

At last Friday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting councillors called for action at the site .

Mayor Brendan Cronin wants the building’s protected status to be removed or at least reduced to speed up potential development work which ties in with Cllr Marie Moloney’s idea that the old hospital could be converted into apart-

ments or flats.

Cllr John O’Donoghue wants the HSE to find a way to hand over the property to Kerry County Council either by way of reduced payment or an intra-government agency ownership change. A Kerry County Council official told the meeting that any works to potentially convert the old hospital into social housing “would be cost prohibitive.”

Arts centre too expensive for community groups

ANAM – Killarney’s Arts and Cultural Centre – is too expensive for local community groups a Killarney Municipal District meeting was told.

The centre, opened in December 2019, after a complete refurbishment of the local-authority owned building on East Avenue.

The refurbished venue has an indoor seating capacity of 67 to cater for small events, but for larger events the venue can be re-arranged, utilising the auditorium as a stage area with outdoor seating of 131 seats.

However, the venue has only been used 53 times so far this year and 63 times in total last year.

Cllr Marie Moloney asked Kerry Coun-

cil officials to release usage data at last week’s Killarney Municipal District. She expressed disappointment at the poor figures.

“At €35 an hour community organisations cannot afford,” she told the meeting.

A council official replied: “Bookings for the ANAM centre over the period 20212023 has seen a steady growth with a wide range of community groups and representative bodies catered for as well as a range of performing and media arts.”

However, elected councillors disagreed with Maura Healy-Rae saying: “It is atrocious that the centre has only been used for 53 days this year.”

Climb Carrauntoohil three times in one day

A Tipperary woman is going to attempt to climb Carrauntoohil three times in one day to raise money for a sick child. Nikita Conlon from Roscrea is a personal trainer and care assistant who has been working in health care for 18 years.

While working at the Milford Care Centre she met the family of Noah Quish. The six-year-old from Monaleen, Limerick was born with serious health issues ranging from a heart defect, severe laryngomalacia, severe sleep apnoea, scoliosis and chromosome deletion.

‘I worked in the Milford Care Centre for five years where I met Una Quish, Noah’s mam, so I felt the need to do something to help his family. I decided to set up this fundraiser.

Killarney Mothers and Others enjoy success at national blitz

Killarney Mothers and Others Legion were one of just two Kerry teams to play in the Gaelic Mothers and Others National Blitz in Portmarnock, Dublin on Saturday.

Over 3,000 women from 148 teams contested what is regarded as the All-Ireland final for Mothers and Others football teams.

“A day of great football laughter, networking, friendships, costumes and socialising make this an event that just goes from strength to strength,” said a club official.

“There are 540 Gaelic Mothers and Others clubs nationwide and what they represent within their clubs and areas is powerful. We at Killarney Mothers and Others Legion would like to thank our coaches Mike and Jason, our sponsors Eddie Rocket’s Killarney and DeBarra Health/Safety Consultants, to the group of women who started this five years ago, to the LGFA for an amazing initiative that keeps growing and to all the Mothers and Others we have had the pleasure of playing in our own county and nationally.”

“I plan to set off at midnight on Friday October 6, and hope to finish at 5 pm on Saturday.

“I have previously Climbed Kilimanjaro in February 2023 and raised over €6000 for the Dean Maxwell Nursing Home in Roscrea,” she said.

“My whole life I have felt the need to help others and now it’s time to help Noah and I need the support to help him.

“This challenge is not going to be easy but I am going to give it my all.

“I have experienced hikers coming along on the day.’

Her plan is to leave Cronin’s Yard at midnight and to return to the starting point at 4.30 am. She will restart at 5 am from the bottom of the Devil’s Ladder. By 10 am on Saturday she hopes to have started her third and final lap.

Dr Crokes' Cronin nominated for All Star award

Dr Crokes Kayleigh Cronin is one of 13 Kerry players to be nominated for a TG4 Ladies Football All Star awards.

All-Ireland Senior Finalists Kerry and Dublin dominate the list of nominations for 2023.

Despite losing out in the showpiece decider to the Sky Blues at Croke Park on August 13, Kerry lead the way with 13 nominations, with Dublin receiving 12, while the long list of 45 nominees includes nine players from the 2022 TG4 All Star team.

Cronin’s teammate Rathmore’s Danielle O’Leary is also on the short list.

Dublin captured a sixth TG4 All-Ireland Senior title this year – and their first

since 2020 – with a powerful display in the final.

It was also another stellar campaign for Kerry, however, as the Kingdom landed the Lidl National League Division 1 title before advancing to a second successive TG4 All-Ireland Senior Final. Dublin and Kerry claim 25 nominations between them, while Mayo, who lost out to Kerry at the semi-final stage, have five players nominated.

There are three nominations each for Armagh, Cork, Donegal and Meath, the 2021 and 2022 TG4 All-Ireland Senior

champions, while Clare, Galway and Kildare have one each.

Dublin’s 12 nominees are goalkeeper Abby Shiels, defenders Niamh Crowley, Leah Caffrey, Martha Byrne and Lauren Magee, midfield pair Jennifer Dunne and Eilish O’Dowd, and forwards Orlagh Nolan, Caoimhe O’Connor, Kate Sullivan, team captain Carla Rowe and Hannah Tyrrell, who was the All-Ireland Senior Final Player of the Match. Kerry’s 13 nominees are goalkeeper Ciara Butler, defenders Cronin, Eilís Lynch, Emma Costello, Cáit Lynch and Aishling O’Connell, midfielders Louise Galvin and Lorraine Scanlon, and forwards Niamh Carmody, Anna Galvin, Louise Ní Mhu-

ircheartaigh, who was top scorer in the 2023 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship, O’Leary and captain Síofra O’Shea. Cronin, Lynch, O’Connell, Carmody and Ní Mhuircheartaigh were all named on the 2022 TG4 All Star team.

The 2023 TG4 All Star team will be announced at a gala banquet at The Bonnington Dublin Hotel on Saturday, November 18.

The 2023 TG4 Junior, Intermediate and Senior Players’ Player of the Year award winners will also be revealed on the night, while the 2023 inductee into the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) Hall of Fame will be acknowledged.

Green flag accreditation for Killarney House

Killarney House and Garden has retained its Green Flag Award and Heritage Site Accreditation for 2023.

The Green Flag Award for Parks was awarded to 101 parks, gardens, grounds and wildlife sanctuaries around the country. The award benchmarks excellence in the management of green spaces which are open free the public.

The Green Heritage Site Accreditation is an extra award given to sites that showcase their unique landscape and built heritage. With the support of the NPWS and the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage, 12 Irish Green Flag sites were accredited to Green Heritage Accreditation standard this year.

Patrick O’Donovan TD, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works said:

“I am delighted to see that many of our Office Public Works (OPW) sites has continued to receive the recognition, with the awarding of the Green flags which highlights the wonderfully diverse parks in our care. I particularly would like to congratulate all the OPW staff whose dedicated work and commitment to each property has contributed towards these Awards.

“The OPW places great importance on the sustainable management and conservation of the State’s Heritage sites, and the Green Flag Awards scheme is a wonderful way of recognising and celebrating these high standards.”

Tracing an Australian family with Aghadoe roots

FAMILY TREE

and Eliza Spillane possibly came from Dromduhig [a townland in Aghadoe], or his mother’s Spillane family did.

Margaret Coffey is a PhD candidate in history at the Monash University in Melbourne.

Jeremiah Coffey and his wife Catherine Brosnahan were among a group of emigrants from Killarney who travelled to Van Diemen’s Land in 1837 on board the Bussorah Merchant.

Although the author shares the same surname she believes they are not related.

“Like most of the group, they soon crossed the Bass Strait to the very new

colony at Port Phillip, Victoria. Their colonial story is too long to tell here, but Catherine and Jeremiah were a talented pair who played a significant role in establishing an Irish community. I’m trying to find out more about their Killarney backgrounds for a thesis about early Irish settlers in Victoria,” she told the Killarney Advertiser

“This I do know, Catherine was the daughter of Thomas Bresnahan, Doonryan and her mother was a Tangney, and Jeremiah, the son of Jeremiah Coffey

“I’d like to get a better sense of Jeremiah’s place of origin, what kind of people he came from. Were they farmers townspeople?

“I also wonder if any letters they may have written survive, since it seems likely that Catherine and Jeremiah or their daughters would have kept in touch with their families in Kerry, through to perhaps the early 1900s.”

Over 400 take part in Lily’s Pink Challenge

With over 430 individuals from all over Kerry and beyond taking on Lily’s Pink Challenge last Saturday in Killarney Race Course it was a reflection of individuals, communities and community groups getting behind the Lily Daly Foundation and Daly Family from Ballyhar, Firies.

Lily’s Pink Challenge involved a 60 km cycle through the Gap of Dunloe, and/ or a 10 km run/walk around Ross Castle and Killarney National Park.

A worthy cause with all proceeds going towards the Heart Centre in Crumlin Hospital and the Ronald McDonald house in Dublin.

Individuals that could not attend in person in Killarney on Saturday, completed Lily’s Pink Challenge last Saturday in Boston, Geelong Australia, Dubai, Lon-

don, Chicago and Portgual.

Speaking after the event, Caroline Daly (Lily’s mom and managing director of the Lily Daly Foundation) said: “We were truly blown away by the support leading up to the event, the ground swell of support from individuals and communities from all over Kerry, Cork and beyond partaking on Saturday.

“Words can’t describe what it meant to us. Also, the level of donations have been phenomenal from all across Ireland

but also all across the word, from across Europe, Dubai, America and even as far as Australia. Also, with over 50 volunteers helping out on the day, they also deserve special mention, we could not have done this without their help, support and generosity and I want to say a special thanks to all of them. Finally, we would also like to thank DJ Pat Dilworth, our MC Niall O Callaghan, Killarney Race Course and Secret Balloons .”

The Lily Daly Foundation’s primary mis-

sion and purpose is to support children and their parents when in hospital with heart related issues. Lily Daly was born in June, 2019 and suffered from Pulmonary Vein Stenosis, a very rear condition affecting the heart and surrounding arteries. Unfortunately, after frequent visits to Crumlin, major heart surgery in both Crumlin and the Presbyterian Hospital in New York, Lily passed away on in February 2021.

Students interested in pursuing a career in traditional skills are especially welcome to come and meet practitioners working in traditional skills.

Minister Stephen Donnelly and others in the public domain have been outspoken over the use of mobile phones in schools these past few weeks. Discussing the issue last week Minister Donnelly said he supports the banning of phones in school due to the “incontrovertible” evidence of the damage that is being caused to young people’s mental health. There is no doubt that over the last two decades we have witnessed a rapid evolution of social media platforms which have fundamentally transformed the way in which we connect, interact and communicate with one another but a ban on phones in schools is going to do little to address the associated mental health issues - an educational program

needs to be integrated into the primary school curriculum. Just like you need a license to drive car, a similar approach should be taken with young people and phone ownership. Starting from the age of 11 or 12, children should be engaging in an educational programme that pro-

motes a safe and healthy relationship with phones and social media apps. Social media is neither inherently ‘bad’ nor ‘good’ for us, in fact we can see many positive impacts social media has had on our lives.

We can now connect with friends and family on the other side of the world with just a few clicks, eliminating the barriers of time and distance to keeping in touch. Not only has it kept us connected, but it has also expanded our social circles. Platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn allow us to connect with like-minded individuals or groups we might never have met otherwise. It has given the ordinary person on the street a platform to amplify their voice and share their stories. Whether it's raising awareness about social issues, advocating for a cause, or expressing

personal opinions, platforms like Twitter and Instagram provide a platform for young people to express their views. This should be encouraged. For better or for worse social media is also redefining relationships. The concept of friendship and relationships has evolved. Online friendships are seen to be as meaningful as in-person ones, and the majority of romantic relationships now begin with an interaction on a social app. Despite all the positive applications, to have a healthy relationship with our phones and social media young people need to understand the pitfalls. So what

Let's talk about young people, phones and the impact of social media
20 OPINION
Do we really believe that banning phones in schools is going to address the issues outlined by the minister?

kind of conversations should we be having at home and in school with our kids?

1. Social media can be a useful way to keep in touch with friends, but it does not fulfil our need for face-to-face human connection

Social Media can be a useful tool to connect with people or make introductions but emojis, likes, and brief comments reduce complex emotions and thoughts into bite-sized, often misunderstood, fragments. Young people need to be educated that in a world where scrolling through a news feed takes precedence over engaging in meaningful dialogue, real human connection requires mean-

ingful conversations.

2. Not everything on social media should be taken as fact. Young people need to be educated around critical thinking and fact checking Helping young people understand how information flows is another key component. News, both real and fake, spreads faster than ever before because of social platforms. Algorithms are designed to show us content that aligns with our existing beliefs and preferences. This creates echo chambers, reinforcing our biases and limiting exposure to diverse viewpoints. As a result, meaningful discussions and the potential for personal growth through interaction with different perspectives are hindered. To combat this, Media literacy, critical thinking, and fact-checking skills are competencies that we can instil in our kids from a young age.

3. A social media profile is not a true reflection of a person’s life, and so you shouldn’t compare or measure yourself against people you follow Unfortunately social media can play a significant role in shaping young people’s self-identity. With influencers curating their online personas, carefully selecting what they share and how they portray themselves, young people find themselves in a culture of comparison, where individuals often measure their worth against the highlight reels of others. As outlined by Minister Donnelly, research has linked excessive social media usage to heightened levels of anxiety and depression. Constantly comparing our lives to others can certainly trigger feelings of inadequacy and jealousy and lead to mental health issues. Additionally, the fear of missing out (FOMO) often drives individuals to stay plugged in, making these issues worse over time.

We need to teach students how to become more self-aware of the type of content they consume on social media, and take back control by un-following people and pages that give them negative feelings.

4. Cyberbullying is dangerous, we must recognise that irresponsible actions online can seriously impact people's mental and physical health Social media has amplified the issue of bullying, causing young people harm in new ways. Online platforms can provide anonymity and distance, allowing young people to engage in hurtful behaviour they might avoid in person. Victims of cyberbullying endure emotional distress, anxiety, and even depression as they face constant harassment through messages, comments, or sharing humiliating content. While the platforms themselves have a huge responsibility in ensuring robust moderation, young people still need to be thought to practise kindness and empathy online, recognising the human impact behind every screen. Making young people aware of the negative impacts of cyberbullying will foster a safer and more compassionate digital world.

When used excessively and mindlessly, social media can certainly have a negative impact on our youth and it is essential to strike a balance between our digital lives and our real-world relationships. The platforms are not going away however, and while banning them in schools will reduce student's screen-time, the real focus should be on educating student's to use social media mindfully, harnessing its power for positive change while being aware of its potential pitfalls.

Lissivigeen School awarded ‘Active Flag’

The pupils and teachers of Lissivigeen National School celebrated the awarding of their very first Active Flag last week.

The Active School is a Department of Education initiative, supported by Healthy Ireland, and part of the National Physical Activity Plan- the aim of which is to ensure physical activity is valued, promoted and enjoyed by all. The children were joined on the day by three past pupils for the raising of the flag: Kayleigh Cronin, Kerry Senior ladies footballer along with Oisín Lynch and Jason O’Reilly, both of whom represented Ireland in the European

Youth Olympics this summer. All three were very gracious with their time and answered lots of questions from the children. The children took part in many activities and challenges last year to earn their Active Flag and the teachers worked hard to incorporate movement into all aspects of the school day. The activities were varied and included athletics, dancing, obstacle courses, orienteering and active break challenges.

N22 Killarney to Faranfore road further delayed

The revealing of the preferred route corridor for the construction of the new Killarney to Farranfore road has been delayed – again.

Four potential routes for the N22 Farranfore-Killarney project were identified and were put out to public consultation in May 2021. These have now been whittled down to just one.

It was previously promised that the pre-

ferred route would be published late last year.

This dragged on in to the Spring and there is still no sigh of the preferred route being revealed.

A recent Kerry County Council meeting a council official explained that there are further funding requirements to allow the council complete various reports and investigations required before the road can move to its next phase.

Highlight of Killarney National Park Nature Calendar

This year marks the second Autumn Gathering - ‘Samhain’ in Killarney National Park, on October 21 and 22 2023. Autumn is considered the highlight of the nature calendar.

The programme of events will be presented by the Conservation Rangers of Killarney National Parks - National Parks and Wildlife Service, (NPWS).

Killarney National Park was the first National Park in Ireland, established in 1932. It encompasses more than 10,000 hectares of diverse ecology, ancient oak and yew woodlands - the most extensive covering of native forest of international importance, the famous Lakes of Killarney, the monastic 6th century Innisfallen Island, Muckross House and Killarney House and Gardens. The renowned Native Irish Red Deer - the largest and only native species with a continuous presence in Ireland since neolithic times.

Autumn in Killarney National Park, in particular the month of October, is considered the most amazing time to observe the Irish Red Deer activity during the annual rutting season. The

audible bellows and tribal behaviour is fascinating. The rich colours of Autumn, the clear crisp air of the mornings and shadows of evening light make the park so spectacular. To celebrate this wonder and designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a number of events will be taking place during the weekend. Saturday will feature the annual Paudie O’Leary Lecture. Paudie was the Head Conservation Ranger at Killarney National Park, who sadly passed away unexpectedly in August 2012. His gentle presence left a huge void among his peers and people of Killarney. His knowledge and love of the National Park was incredible, his legacy - enormous. This year to honour Paudie’s memory, Áine Ní Shúilleabháin, Biologist, will deliver the Paudie O’Leary Lecture. Áine worked with Paudie for many years, and always treasures the wonderful memories of their time in Killarney National

Park.

She is the longest serving volunteer in Killarney National Park, with over 41 years volunteering as a research biologist - dedicated to the recording of valuable scientific data on waterfowl and water quality in Killarney National Park. Her research has been an invaluable source of material with recordings dating back to 1982.

Áine’s contribution, observing ecosystems and reporting on her findings, will be recognised for generations to come. She is well known in GAA circles, and immersed herself with Glenflesk GAA Club. With her strong Kerry roots, she served as Club PRO and now as Health Club Officer. She was appointed to the role of Kerry County Board Children’s Officer, a role she is very proud to hold. The lecture takes place at Killarney House Auditorium on October 21, at 3.00pm. Booking for the Annual Paudie O’Leary Lecture - email: infokillarneyhouse@ npws.gov.ie

Other events include Autumn Photo-

graphic Workshops on Saturday and Sunday with renowned International landscape Photographer Michéal O’Sullivan.

Michéal will deliver two half day photography workshop & National Park Shoot. This tour is a unique opportunity for those who would like to explore, learn and capture beautiful images of ancient woodlands, historic castles and breathtaking landscapes of mountains and lakes.

Morning Deer watch with well known Conservation Ranger - Padruig ‘Brac’ O’Sullivan, both Saturday and Sunday Mornings meeting at Knockreer front gate at 7.30am. Padruig’s informative walks are always very popular.

Also a firm favourite, Family Nature FunDay at Muckross School House, Saturday and Sunday 10.00-12.30 noon, and Nocturnal Nature Ramble - at Knockreer, with Killarney National Park Nature Education Centre, meeting at Knockreer front gate 6.30 pm on October 21.

Practicing self-compassion A conversation with Chloe Enright

Mindfulness and breathwork, two ancient practices that have revived in popularity in recent years as powerful tools to cultivate a sense of calm and balance in our lives.

Compassionate Co was set up and founded by Killarney Local - Chloe Enright, a Public Health Practitioner and Breathwork Facilitator who has extensive experience in health research, health communications and surveillance. With a particular passion for mental health, Chloe began to research the area of self-compassion and based on her own experience, developed ‘Your Self-Scribbler’, a guided journaling experience for improving self-compassion. Chloe’s background is in Public health, which encompasses health promotion, epidemiology and health protection. Public health as a discipline focuses on prevention of disease, rather than treatment. Her recently launched business, Compassionate Co, follows these same principles – the upstream approach.

PREVENTION IS KEY

“I like to say the interventions I provide arm people with tools to protect and support their own mental wellbeing, rather than letting it get to the stage where illness has developed, and treatment is required. These tools are in the form of guided journaling and breathwork. Both of which support the development of mental resilience as well as other positive health benefit”

“I was always fascinated by the complexities of health as a discipline and that deepened even further when I was faced with health challenges myself, relating to my physical and mental well-being. Through my own journey, I realised the huge connection between mind to body, and body to mind and the degree of influence one has on the other.”

DISCOVERING SELF-COMPASSION

It was on this self-development journey that Chloe came across the concept of self-compassion. She described self-compassion as “treating yourself with kindness through difficult or challenging thought and emotion”.

It’s treating ourselves like we would a friend in times when these emotions or thoughts arise, and choosing to be kind over harshly self-critical.

“There is a choice! We are hard-wired to criticise ourselves, but we can change that. There is a framework that supports cultivating self-compassion. It is based on three pillars (mindfulness, self-kindness and common humanity). Being mindful of what we are feeling rather than over-identifying (mindfulness), choosing to be kind to ourselves over harshly self-critical (self-kindness), and realising that imperfection is part of the common human experience”

“I worked hard on learning the concept, as I was probably the most un self-compassionate people you would meet! Always criticising myself! Once I learnt the

concept, I began to notice how good I was feeling. If I made a mistake in work?

It happens, rectify and move on! If I noticed I was critiquing my body, noticing how that made me feel, and making a choice to replace it with kind phraseology. It started to veer into every area of my life, and I truly became my happiest version of self.”

YOUR SELF-SCRIBBLER

Late last year Chloe got news that she needed another major spinal surgery and she was devastated. Knowing what was ahead, she knew that there would be lots of difficult emotions involved pre and post recovery and she was looking for resources to help her cope.

“I went and looked for a journal which allowed me to practice self-compassion during this time. And there wasn’t one! And so, Your Self – Scribbler was born, the guided journaling experience to help you cultivate self-compassion”

“The journal is guided and is based on the three pillars for self-compassion: mindfulness; self-kindness and common humanity. The journal asks you a series to questions that require you to dig a little deeper than you average journal, but there is plenty of examples to draw on. Mindfulness – helping you to put words on how you are feeling and helping you to identify what you need based on those feelings. Self-kindness – breaking down unhelpful negative judgements you have made about yourself. Common humanity – discussing any difficult emotions you are feeling, reiterating that these are completely normal”.

Chloe is also a breathwork facilitator and runs a number of classes and workshops both locally and around the country. Breathwork is engaging in conscious breathing practices, where you move your focus completely to the breath. “Breathwork allows you to practice mindfulness as it allows you to connect with your body, and move into the present moment – which is mindfulness! So, you could say breathwork is a mindful experience. Every attendee to my classes has a mindful hour, through connecting with their bodies through their breath. There is a huge amount of evidence that has been published in recent years on the benefits of breathwork, and the evidence base continues to evolve”

Chloe is due to launch her online facilitation classes in the coming weeks. She feels this was important to make it accessible to all, as it’s not always feasible for people to attend her classes in person, she will be sharing details on her socials in the coming weeks!

If you are interested in finding out more about Chloe and joining her on a journey of practising self-compassion you can find her on Instagram: @compassionateco, Facebook: Compassionate Co, TikTok: @compassionate_co and her website is www.compassionate-co. com, email: info@compassionate-co. com.

Join The Human Chain Challenge On Strickeen Mountain For Kerry Mental Health Association

Kerry Mental Health Association (KMHA) has launched its first Human Chain Mountain Challenge Walk to the top of Strickeen in the Gap of Dunloe near Killarney at 9am on October 8. The challenge is a show of support for people with mental health challenges, their families and carers in Kerry.

The General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, said: “The Human Chain Challenge will take place two days before World Mental Health Day and will be the first in a series of annual walks of a similar nature throughout the county. A key aspect of our 2024 to 2027 strategy, which is be-

ing developed, is to have the necessary funds to roll-out of free and affordable educational activities aimed at ensuring society is better informed about how to take care of its mental health. We are grateful to the local landowners and the MacGillycuddy Reeks Access Forum for facilitating the Human Chain Challenge for Kerry Mental Health Association.” As the land is privately owned, advance registration is necessary with every

walker receiving a FREE bright KMHA-branded bandana to be worn for the Official Human Chain Challenge Drone picture.

The registered walkers will need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, children must be accompanied by responsible adults and dogs are not permitted. Car-pooling is also recommended as limited parking spaces will be available.

In the interest of safety, Kerry Mountain Rescue will be on 24-hour call and the Killarney Order of Malta will be on site at the foot of the mountain to provide First Aid assistance if required.

Kerry Mental Health Association sup-

ports the Leave No Trace campaign and will be encouraging all participants to leave Strickeen Mountain in the spotless condition that they found it.

The Human Chain Challenge at Strickeen on Sunday 8th October will be preceded by the annual #TieDayFriday Fundraising event on Friday 6th October – both taking place to coincide with World Mental Health Day on 10th October.

Walkers are invited to register at https://kerrymentalhealth.ie/human-chain-challenge to join the human chain at the top for a fun and colourful show of support.

Elon Musk: X behind a paywall?

Elon Musk, the owner of X, formerly Twitter, has said that the company will start charging people “a small monthly payment” to use the service.

May and Séamus McGee could never have imagined that their bid to lift a contraceptive ban in 1972 would change Irish society forever.

When May and Séamus McGee approached a solicitor in 1972 to raise concerns about a banned contraceptive, they had no idea that the resulting case would lead to a change in the law, one that has had a profound effect on Irish society.

In 1972, contraception was illegal in Ireland. Although women could obtain the pill through their own GP, all retail sale of contraceptive products was prohibited. May McGee, however, had suffered se-

vere medical complications during her first three pregnancies, and her doctor unequivocally warned that another pregnancy could prove to be fatal. In response, therefore, May attempted to import a spermicidal jelly. But her intended package was seized, and the young mother was threatened with jail. Undeterred, she and her husband, Séamus, boldly challenged the law. Although the High Court ruled against them, a year later, in 1973, the couple won their case on appeal at the Supreme Court, and six years later contraception was legalised.

In a one-hour documentary, May and Séamus share unseen personal archive

and deliver intimate and revealing moments, charged with emotion. As well as contributions from other family members, prominent historians and human rights activists praise the actions of this unassuming couple from Skerries.

McGee v Attorney General has become a landmark case in Irish history. This defining, heart-warming documentary for TG4, by Midas Productions, relives the urgency of that period and the significant implications it delivered for married couples.

“It’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots,” Musk told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a live conversation that was streamed on the platform on Monday. However, Musk did not specify details. Since he bought the platform last year, Musk, has made a lot of changes including lifting the ban on former US President Donald Trump. But putting the entire social network behind a paywall seams his most drastic move so far. Bots are automated accounts that can be used for good things but can also be used for malicious purposes. Requiring payment to use X would make running bot armies financially unfeasible. Other platforms use technical solutions like machine learning, artificial intelligence to pinpoint them rather than charging. In 2021, Twitter’s integrity team flagged nearly 10 million malicious bots a week using machine learning and training. However, Musk fired the team after buying Twitter. Requiring people to pay for the privilege of simply using the service to get rid of bots would risk causing many to stop using X altogether.

SpaceX deploys another 22 Starlink satellites

Elon Musk's SpaceX this week launched a Falcon 9 rocket with a payload of 22 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit.

The rocket launched Tuesday at 11:38 p.m. EDT from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The orbitals were deposited into space where they will join the ever-growing constellation of thousands of Starlink

satellites that provide low-latency, highspeed Internet to customers worldwide. The first-stage booster of the two-stage rocket was on its 17th flight and returned to Earth where it landed upon SpaceX's A Shortfall of Gravitas autonomous barrage awaiting it in the Atlantic Ocean. The launch comes nearly a month after SpaceX put its 5,000th Starlink satellite into orbit. It has been approved to deploy 12,000 of the orbitals but it has requested clearance for another 30,000.

Security Review of Leinster House

A review of security at Leinster House is underway after TDs and staff were unable to leave the grounds for several hours Wednesday afternoon due to protests.

The Ceann Comhairle of the Dail, Seán Ó Fearghaíl, said serious concerns have been raised about some aspects of the protests. He said that the right to protest is an absolute part of life in a democracy, but that he believes that the nature of yesterday's (Wednesday) protest warrants a review. Wellie throwing Macra breaks Guinness World Record

Macra is thrilled to announce that it has achieved the extraordinary feat of breaking the Guinness World Record for the "Most Persons Simultaneously Throwing Wellington Boots” on Wednesday.

The Guinness World Record attempt took place at the National Ploughing Championships, in Ratheniska, Co. Laois where 995 participants from across Ireland gathered to participate in this world

record breaking event.

Excitement was in the air as the countdown began, at the signal participants launched their wellington boots into the air in unison. Hundreds of wellingtons flew through the air, which was a sight to behold in itself.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Healy-Rae said that awful language was directed towards journalists, Dáil staff and others, who were subjected to "vile abuse".

Amazon secures planning permission for three new data centres

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has secured planning permission to construct three new data centres in north Dublin.

This follows Fingal County Council giving the go-ahead to AWS for the three new data centre buildings with a combined power load of 73MW for the AWS data centre campus on a 65 acre land-holding at Cruiserath Road, Dublin 15. In addition to the three granted planning permission, one AWS data centre is already operational at the campus while construction work continues on two others.

The council has granted planning permis-

sion despite major opposition. The planning authority has included a condition that prior to the operation of the data centres, that AWS have in place a Corporate Purchase Power Agreement (CPPA), which demonstrates that the energy consumed by the data centres is matched by new AWS renewable energy generation.

The council has stated that the new renewable energy projects shall be located in Ireland and the amount of electricity generated by the renewable energy projects shall be equal to or greater than the electricity requirements of the data centres in operation at any given time.

Eligibility for Fuel Allowance

As the days get shorter and temperatures drop, many people will be anxious about the cost of heating their home over the winter.

The Fuel Allowance is a means tested social welfare payment to help with the cost of heating your home during the winter months.

What is the current rate of Fuel Allowance?

The current rate of Fuel Allowance is €33 per week. If you qualify for the allowance, it is paid with your social welfare payment on the same day. You can choose to get the Fuel Allowance paid weekly or paid in 2 lump sums. If you opt for the lump sum, the first instalment will be paid in September 2023. The second will be paid in January 2024.

ble income limit for a single person is €465.30 (€200 plus €265.30). The current assessable income limit for a couple (where the qualified adult is aged under 66) is €642. The current assessable income limit for a couple (where the qualified adult is aged 66 or over and under 70) is €703.10 (€200 plus €265.30 plus €237.80).

Is there a different means test for people over 70 for the Fuel Allowance?

Yes. The Over 70s Means Test for Fuel Allowance is as follows:

1. Tentacles

2. Electronic reminder

3. Pinocchio, e.g.

4. Sign up

5. Defunct USAF branch

6. Lengthen

7. ____ Macpherson

8. Surrealism's Salvador ____

When will the Fuel Allowance be paid? The Fuel Allowance season normally begins in late September of each year and ends in April. This year’s Fuel Allowance season starts on Monday, 25 September 2023. It will be paid for 28 weeks (until 5 April 2024). Who can I live with & qualify for the Fuel Allowance?

You must live alone or with:

A spouse, civil partner or cohabitant who qualifies for an increase on your pension or social welfare payment or is getting a qualifying payment in their own right

Dependent children

A person who is getting Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Benefit and is caring for you or for your spouse, partner or cohabitant or qualified child dependant on a full-time basis

A person getting short-term Jobseeker’s Allowance or basic Supplementary Welfare Allowance

Other people who are getting a qualifying payment and who would be eligible for a Fuel Allowance in their own right

A person aged 70 or over

Are there other qualifying conditions?

You must be getting a qualifying social welfare payment or pension (unless you are 70 or over). You must also satisfy a means test. Contact your local Citizens Information Centre to check if you are on a qualifying payment and they will also explain the means test. What are the income limits for people under 70?

To qualify for Fuel Allowance when you are aged under 70, your total means from all sources must be less than the current maximum rate of State Pension (Contributory) including any increases that you might get for living alone and dependants, plus €200. This is called the assessable income limit. The current assessa-

a single person over 70 can have income of €500 per week and a couple can have income of €1,000 per week people over 70 no longer need to be in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment to be eligible for Fuel Allowance in the case of a couple where one person is over 70 and one is under 70, they will be assessed under the Over 70s Means Test criteria the amount of savings that are disregarded in the means assessment for the Fuel Allowance payment for people aged over 70 has increased from €20,000 to €50,000

How to apply for Fuel Allowance?

You can apply for the Fuel Allowance online. You must have a MyGovID account to apply online.

If you can’t apply online, you can use a paper application form. You can get a form from your local Citizens Information Centre. You can also get a form from your local post office or by phoning 0818 200 400. You should ask for the relevant form for your age.

If you apply for Fuel Allowance after the start of the Fuel Allowance season, it will not be backdated. If you previously received the Fuel Allowance you do not need to reapply for it each year as long as your circumstances remain the same and you continue to get the same social welfare payment.

For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. World Rally Champion Phil Mills’ Killarney visit

Former World co-driving champion Phil Mills will be one of the guests of honour at a special Killarney and District Motor Club event next month.

The club is celebrating Prodrive’s association with the Rally of the Lakes on October 14.

The legendary British motorsport preparation firm was responsible for building some of the most iconic associated with the local rally.

The celebration, which will raise funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation, will be hosted by the voice of Irish motorsport Alan ‘Plum’ Tyndall.

Welshman Mills, who won the 2003 World Rally Championship, alongside Petter Solberg has confirmed his attendance at the Killarney Racecourse-based event.

He is just one of many superstars attending the showcase.

“Accompanying the stars will be a collection of iconic Prodrive machinery, ranging from the BMW E30 M3, all the way through to the Subaru Group A and World Rally Cars the 1990s and early 2000s,” said Killarney and District Motor Club vice chairman and organiser Mike Shea.

“All proceeds of this event will go directly to the Jack & Jill foundation helping provide support and special care to children across the country and is a once in a lifetime event.”

This event is in association with: Lyons of Limerick; C.Wharton Tool Hire Ltd; BG Motors Ltd; Castleisland Tyre Centre; Aherns Motor Group; Reen’s Rathmore Peugeot; KC Print and Moriarty’s Central Car Sales

Ballymac charity vintage run on October 1

The Ballymac Vintage Club is hosting a classic car, tractor and Honda 50 run on October 1.

The run will leave from and return to the Halfway Bar, Ballymac.

Registration begins at 9:30am and set off at 11am.

“There will be two separate routes with one for tractors and the other for cars and motorbikes. Proceeds on the day are in aid of Castleisland Day Care Centre and we’ll have plenty of spot prizes to giveaway too in the morning,” said the club’s PRO Kieran Glover.

O’Sullivan chases National Rally glory in Clare on Sunday

It is hard to believe that it is four years since the Triton Showers-backed Motorsport Ireland National Rally Championship last visited Clare.

Between the pandemic and the new event rotation system, the last time the Liam Cleary Autoworld Clare Rally ran was in September 2019.

But it has been well worth the wait. Organisers Clare Motor Club have attracted a stellar entry that has both strength and depth.

The Triton Showers National Rally Championship enters the home straight this weekend and all of the title protagonists will be in Ennis for the penultimate round of the eight-round championship.

Leading the fray after six rounds are defending champions, Josh Moffett and Keith Moriarty.

The Hyundai i20 Rally2 crew have a 20-point advantage over Callum Devine and Noel O’Sullivan from Muckross. However, the Derry/Kerry crew has won the last two rounds in Sligo and Meath and when dropped scores come into play, they have started one less round than Moffett and Moriarty which suggests, mathematically, the advantage is maybe with the Volkswagen Polo Gti crew.

But anything can happen in rallying and it looks certain that the championship will go to the wire at the Fastnet Rally in late October.

52 Pinewood Estate, Killarney who passed away on 24th September 2022.

The pale moon was rising above the green mountain, The sun was declining beneath the blue sea, When I strayed with my love to the pure crystal fountain, That stands in the beautiful Vale of Tralee. She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer, Yet ‘twas not her beauty alone that won me; Oh no, ‘twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning, That made me love Ita, The Rose picked for Me.

Though her smile is gone forever, her hand I cannot touch I still have so many memories of my wife, I loved so much.

Always in my heart love and miss you, John Joe. X

Luckless Kerry seek famous home win

League leaders Galway visit Tralee as season draws to a close

Runaway league leaders Galway United are the visitors at Mounthawk Park this evening as new boys Kerry FC look to secure just their second win of the 2023 season.

Kerry’s record of one win, five draws and 25 defeats from 31 games makes for uncomfortable reading, though few expected them to pull up many trees in their maiden season.

The club only issued their first professional contracts in recent weeks (to Ryan Kelliher and Ronan Teahan) so it is understandable that a professional outfit like Galway are miles head at the opposite end of the table on the brink of promotion to the Premier Division.

Encouragingly for Kerry, their results against the league’s best team have improved markedly over the course of the season.

On Matchday 4, United demolished Kerry by nine goals to one in Galway. It was a record defeat for any team in First Division history. The next meeting between the teams on April 24 finished 1-4 to Galway in Tralee, a more respectable outcome for the Kingdom that had threatened to be far better when Kelliher gave them the lead before half-time.

The most recent encounter on June 30 also ended in victory for the league leaders but this time the margin was the bare minimum. Maurice Nugent scored the only goal of the game at Eamonn Deacy Park as the home team ran out 1-0 winners.

Things certainly appear to be trending in the right direction for Billy Dennehy’s youngsters, although he will be fully aware that the jump from creditable defeat to breakthrough victory is a big one. Opportunities to clinch that first ever home league win are running out; they only have three more matches in front of their home supporters before the regular season concludes on October 20. After Galway tonight they have Finn Harps away, Wexford at home, Waterford at home and Cobh Ramblers away.

Kerry will have to plan for the rest of the season without central defender Jonathan Hannafin who has walked away from the set-up. Tralee native Hannafin, affectionately known as Nonnie, is the latest player to leave the club following the departure of captain Matt Keane. Keane was on the scoresheet for Killarney Celtic in their recent 3-2 victory over Listowel Celtic in the KDL Premier A.

Results business: should GAA scorelines be simplified?

Let’s do a quick test. Here are some results from the world of sports. All you have to do is note the winning team as you go.

Wales 32-26 Fiji. Carlton Blues 74-68

Sydney Swans. Chicago Bears 20-38

Green Bay Packers. Denver Nuggets 94-89 Miami Heat. Clare 2-22 Cork 3-18.

The first four winners are easy. Wales. Carlton Blues. Green Bay Packers. Denver Nuggets. And then? Just give me two seconds… Clare.

The difference is obvious. The rugby, Australian rules, American football and basketball results do not require

any thinking beyond identifying which number is higher. The last one, a hurling result from this year’s championship, does. Granted, we’re talking about basic primary school maths and not higher level Leaving Cert maths, but is there really any need to bring maths into it at all?

Unlike soccer or hockey which operate under a ‘one goal = one’ system, the sports mentioned above have multiple methods of scoring, and each method is worth a different number of points. Rugby has tries, conversions, penalties and drop goals. Aussie rules has goals and behinds. American football has touchdowns, tries after touchdowns,

safeties and field goals. Basketball has three-pointers, two-pointers and free throws. Maths are needed to add up the scores but as the points are calculated, be it during the course of the game or after, the methods of scoring are excluded and only the total number of points is displayed. (AFL is slightly different in that the number of goals and behinds are often shown alongside or beneath the total score. But the total score is always there.)

In the GAA, we do things differently. We have goals (worth three) and points (worth one), and the score is generally displayed in a ‘goals-points’ format,

especially in print and online, as well as on scoreboards at most GAA grounds around the country.

Television broadcasters such as RTÉ, perhaps aware that some casual viewers might not understand the scoring system, do show the total running score during their live matches. But you don’t have to be a casual fan to get a little confused when reading a score like Clare 2-22 Cork 3-18. No matter how good your maths are, it will inevitably take a couple of seconds to complete your calculations. It could be argued that it’s a couple of seconds too long.

It would be a lot simpler and more efficient to either leave the scoring methods out of it, or to include them but to also include – as a rule - the totals. For example:

Clare 28-27 Cork or Clare 2-22 (28) Cork 3-18 (27).

Whether you’re an outsider or a GAA diehard, it’s immediately clearer who won the game – which, after all, is literally the point of writing the result down in the first place.

The GAA score is generally displayed in a ‘goals-points’ format in print and on most scoreboards.

Basketball season is almost upon us

St Paul’s men’s and women’s teams ready for big tip-off

With the start of the 2023/24 National League season just around the corner and with some new signings settling into their new hometown of Killarney, it’s an exciting time for the St Paul’s men’s and women’s senior teams. As these pictures show, players, coaches and officials met for the season launch in advance of the big tip-off on October 1.

Having come so close to gaining promotion to the Women's Super League last season, St Paul’s women’s team did a lot more than stick their toes in the Division 1 water to check the temperature.

James Fleming led his team to the MissQuote.ie Southern Conference title in impressive fashion and by the time the hard questions were being asked they looked to have all the answers. Unfortunately, they just came up short against a Jessica Fressle-inspired Portlaoise Panthers who stormed their way to the higher echelon with a power packed final quarter.

The summer months have been spent in a reflective mood and Coach Fleming has been busy finalising his squad. Now playing under the banner of new sponsors Utility Trust, St Paul’s, the main blocks are still in the wall. Rheanne O’Shea, one of the league's leading three-point shooters, is fine tuning her radar and Lorraine Scanlon, who spent the summer performing heroics for the Kerry ladies, has checked in for another winter on the hardwood.

Denise Dunlea will be eager to impress this year while Irish underage international Leah McMahon will have benefitted no end from the experience of her

debut season. Aisling Counihan is again answering the call to arms and in what is seen as a natural transition on court conductor Lynn Jones will lead the side alongside O’Shea. The squad will of course be without the services of Síofra O’Shea as her unfortunate cruciate ligament injury will requiring a winter of rehabilitation.

Yuleska Tejeda Ramirez and Sofia Paska were a high scoring duo last season and they have moved onto pastures new. But the club has scouted extensively and captured the signing of what will be seen as two key components for a promotion push.

Jess Huber, a graduate of the University of the Sciences, boasts an impressive record while attending there. The Hatfield, Pennsylvania native was CACC Player of the Year, made the All League first team and led her side multiple times in scoring, racking up 45 points in one particular game. The guard also possesses an innate ability to dribble at speed.

Colgate (USA) graduate Alexa Naessans arrives via the UK, having spent a season with the Essex Rebels. The 6’1” forward/ centre has genuine leadership skills having received both the Best Teammate Award and Coaches Award in her final season in Colgate. The team will be hoping to utilise her height and athleticism

at both ends of the court. The squad has been further bolstered by the addition of Maeve Barry, sister of Kerry GAA star Jack, who is a very accomplished ball player.

LAKERS

Scotts Lakers coach for the upcoming InsureMyVan.ie National Basketball League is Brian Clarke who was an integral part of St Paul’s side who competed at the top table of Irish basketball in the 1990s and 2000s. A highly skilled and durable player, he could turn a game in an instant and his guile and craft marked him out as one of the finest players to pull on a vest in the county. More recently, Clarke has been an integral part of the education of the club’s young guns, and last year he coached the U18 side. That this team, with the likes of Jack O’Sullivan, Eoin Carroll, Mark Sheehan and Oisín Spring, will form the backbone of the National League squad going forward creates an exciting dynamic for the club.

Senan O’Leary has transferred to Galway Titans with his academic career taking him up the west coast while Marko Bencic is also unavailable. Mark O’Shea will be concentrating on GAA commitments for the time being but his return will be welcomed as he possesses a defensive grit that will be needed.

Ronan Collins has rejoined the squad also; his performances last season were

at a very high level. It is hoped that David Gleeson will overcome a troublesome back injury to play his part. Jamie O’Sullivan, though still only in his early twenties, could nearly be classed as a young elder as he enters his sixth season at this level.

Coach Clarke has spent the off season scouring for new recruits to complement his young Lakers squad. Braden Bell, a 6’7” native of Rowlett in Texas has experience of playing college basketball at the Marist Red and the Prairie View Panthers. He has a versatility which allows him to play across a variety of positions and his mobility is seen as being integral to the Lakers mantra. With Basketball Ireland's new regulations allowing for two American players to feature in the on-court five, another exciting addition to the lineup is Terion Moss. Standing at 5’10”, Moss is coming to Killarney off the back of a very impressive season with the University of Maine at Farmington Athletics.

Captain for the season will be Paul Clarke, the towering Killarney native being the most senior member of the panel. His game nous allied to his basketball IQ are seen as being essential in the development of the squads younger players.

Both the Lakers and the St Paul’s women’s team get their Division 1 campaign up and running on October 1 in an away double-header versus SETU Carlow. The club are once again grateful to Maurice O'Donoghue of Scotts Hotel who has been most generous sponsors to the squad in recent years.

Understrength East Kerry still too strong

KERRY SFC

The Kerry SFC got underway last weekend with all first round matches played. Will East Kerry, the hotly fancied side, retain the title or will newly crowned club champions Dingle win the Bishop Moynihan Cup that has eluded them for many decades?

Also, very much in the minds of the Kerry selectors is the hope that at least two good natural scoring forwards and one midfielder will emerge as a necessity if Kerry can plan to wrestle the Sam Maguire from Dublin.

Teams have been arranged into four groups and fortunately for the four local teams they will not meet each other in rounds 1, 2 and 3. They are spread over

the four groups. Naturally, this column will concentrate most of the coverage on the local teams. The county final is scheduled for November 19 and the Munster campaign commences on the following weekend.

East Kerry showed why they are raging hot favourites by proving too strong for a spirited South Kerry side in Austin Stack Park. What is remarkable is that they were without at least five marquee players.

Thankfully, East Kerry manager Jerry O’Sullivan gave the Clifford brothers a well-earned rest knowing that they will be that much fresher for the knockout stages. And it wasn’t just the Fossa stars who did not line out. Ruairí Murphy and

the two Kilcummin players Paul O’Shea and Kieran Murphy did not play. East Kerry just have that touch of class about them; there’s a reason they’re odds on to win.

It mattered little that such prominent players were not used as O’Sullivan had plenty other proven stars. Up stepped Fossa’s Emmett O’Shea with a personal contribution of 2-2. South Kerry were always chasing this game going 1-2 down after 5 minutes. Experienced Darragh Roche from Glenflesk was the early goal scorer.

In the 23rd minute Daly scored the goal South Kerry needed ,but East Kerry were comfortable leaders 1-7 to 1-3 at the half-way stage.

South Kerry started promisingly in the second half with 3 points, but the dye was cast when Emmett O’Shea goaled to put them 2-9 to 1-6 clear with his second on the 56th minute. 3-13 is a winning score almost every day and it could have been a much bigger margin, considering the luxury of shooting 14 wides. South Kerry are a very young side up against seasoned campaigners. The big scorers for the winners were Darragh Roche (1-5, 2f) and Emmett O’Shea (2-2).

Jerry O ‘Sullivan was able to run the bench in the final quarter.

Luke Crowley, the East Kerry corner forward, made his own bit of history. His father John starred with East Kerry in those Kerry SFC winning runs along with the great Séamus Moynihan during the victorious era managed by Seán Counihan.

Further back his grandfather Derry Crowley was full back on the East Kerry team which won four Kerry SFC titles starting in 1965, including the 3-in-arow in 1968, 1969 and 1970, going on to win Munster titles and the inaugural All-Ireland club Championship in 1971. Those teams were managed by Donie Sheahan.

Elsewhere in Group 1, Templenoe best West Kerry 2-13 to 0-18. This was a great test for one of the smaller clubs in Kerry, ousting divisional board side West Kerry. Just a point in it at the end, but Templenoe had the man of the match in Kerry senior Killian Spillane who shot eight points and none more valuable than his 8th white flag, in the 62nd minute which proved to be the winner.

Pity there wasn’t a decent attendance to see Tom’s son on target especially from frees, five in all with three more from play. Were there 300 people present?

Big wins for Dingle and Mid Kerry

Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews last weekend’s Kerry SFC group stage action

RATHMORE 0-20 ST KIERAN’S 2-14

All level at the end if this Group 2 match and Rathmore deserve credit for this result. The impressive impact sub Daire Keane (0-3) scored what seemed like the winning point for St Kieran’s, but Mark Ryan equalised with time almost up. A score of 20 points deserves to be rewarded. The first goal came in the 17th minute when Cathal Brosnan had the simple task of flicking the ball into the Rathmore net. No joy for Rathmore ‘keeper Willie Casey when full forward Adam Barry scored their second goal. As usual Rathmore deployed All-Star Shane Ryan as target man on the edge of the Kieran’s square. He ended with 7 points. Rathmore were well served by their Kerry stars, Paul Murphy and Shane Ryan as well as James Darmody and Brendan O’Keeffe (0-3 each) and Christy Spiers who scored his 3 points from frees. The All-Ireland Intermediate champions of 2022 showed that they are well able for the demands of senior fare. In this encouraging fightback no less than 8 players scored in that 20-point return. They won’t be afraid of Feale Rangers or Kenmare Shamrocks. That result may well come down to the marksmanship duel between the Kerry team mates Shane Ryan and Seánie O’Shea who finished with 7 points in their 0-13 to 0-7 win over Feale Rangers.

Rathmore will have Feale Rangers at home in Rathbeg in Round 2 and will have to travel to Kenmare Shamrocks for Round 3.

St Kieran’s always put together a good divisional board team, backboned by Ballymac, Desmonds, Currow, Scartaglin and Cordal.

SPA 0-14 MID KERRY 3-11

In Group 3, Spa managed a very creditable score of 14 points, 5 of these coming from captain Evan Cronin. In all 8 of the Spa team got on the scorers’ list. Spa were still in it at half-time just 2 points adrift 1-5 to 0-6.

However, the 3 goals killed their chances of an upset. The goal scorers were Cillian Burke, Daire Clarke and Caolim Teahan.

Mid Kerry kicked several bad wides also, but they had plenty to spare over Spa who had to do without black carded Cian Tobin for 10 minutes.

Mid Kerry were missing a few regulars and it took them some time to get going. Strangely enough Éanna O’Connor scored just 3 points, 2 from frees, a tribute to the Spa defenders not conceding fouls within the scoring range. O’Connor was replaced at the three-quarter stage. However, with a full squad they look to be the best bet along with Dingle to stop the runaway East Kerry train. Spa will have to travel to Strand Road to play Rahillys in Round 2 and will have Shannon Rangers at home for Round 3. Kerins O’Rahillys 1-21 Shannon Rangers

1-16

The Strand Road side will be happy with this win; after their fall from grace in the club stakes they face a relegation playoff. It was also a good start for their first outing in their brand-new design of jersey dedicated to the famous republican Charlie Kerins. They led 1-9 to 0-5 at the interval.

What is remarkable is that they played the last 20 minutes without Jake Foley who had been sent off at a crucial time when there was just 2 points between them 1-14 to 1-12 and 17 minutes to go on the clock.

Former Kerry players David Moran (0 -3) and Tommy Walsh (0-2) still showed they have much to offer a club that has had a terrible year of defeats.

Kevin Goulding (1-2), Mikey Boyle (0-3) and Jack Kennelly (0-5) were the best of the losers.

DINGLE 1-13 DR CROKES 0-14

he old adage that goals win matches and that goal opportunities spurned lead to inevitable defeat was played out in this highly competitive fast-moving game. The match-winning Dingle goal came

STAR: Tom O'Sullivan helped Dingle to an important victory over Dr Crokes. Photo: Sportsfile
22.09.2023 58

in the 50th minute and fittingly it fell to the star player on view, Conor Geaney. He broke the hearts of Dr Crokes shooting no less than 1-8 and he will certainly be in the sights of Jack O ‘Connor for Kerry in 2024.

I know he has been around the house with Kerry some years ago, but his ability to score has not dimmed one bit. I counted 9 attempts at goal and all 9 shots on target. He scored all of their 5 points in that opening section and ended the game as the scorer supreme with a tally of 1-8.

The goal was pivotal in determining the result but a total tally (1-8, 2m, 2f), by the Dingle corner forward was magical.

Crokes were in all kinds of trouble in their full back line in the first half and may well rue why they did not plug that gap much earlier. They were 4 points in arrears before John Payne and Fionn Fitzgerald came on for Neil O’Shea (inj.) and Mark Fitgerald with immediate effect particularly so with Fionn Fitzgerald who sealed the defence and projected those steals to launch attacks. Reducing that 0-8 to 0-4 margin to a single point at half time was a purple patch for Crokes with well taken points.

After early dominance Dingle faded and their lead was reduced to just a point at half time 0-8 to 0-7. Crokes were dominant in the 3rd quarter thanks to the ever-improving midfielder Mark O’Shea who shot 2 valuable points and should have scored a goal when they were on top. They had 3 attempts in the same sequence of play. First Cian McMahon’s shot for goal came off the right-hand butt of the Dingle goalkeeper’s post at the Mitchels end. Another Croke strike followed and then the inrushing Evan Looney sent a screamer across the goal mouth just outside the left post.

That missed goal chance re-ignited Dingle. Geaney delivered the sucker punch with a splendid shot. Ironically, it was Evan Looney who was directly involved. He had been having a fine game, unlucky to miss the aforementioned goal. Later his pass was intercepted by the Dingle midfielder who transferred it smartly it to the ‘couldn’t miss’ forward Conor Geaney. His strike was excellent, crashing it past Shane Murphy. From being 2 points in arrears Dingle went 1 point ahead. They crowded out the Crokes forwards and ended with that 2-point win.

Micheál Burns was very influential in the first half but was untypically welloff target with good scoring opportunities especially in the second half when they needed the scores to win.

The positives for Dr Crokes as they prepare for the must-win next game was the return to the forward line of Kerry star Tony Brosnan who has been out of football since before the All-Ireland final with a breathing difficulty. He fired over some great points for a tally of 0-5. He showed his class even when doubly marked. Fionn Fitzgerald has been out of football for over a year but made a big difference when he came on.

Tom Doyle also did well when he entered the fray scoring 2 carbon copy points from long range and kicked with the outside of the foot. Crokes will be hoping to have the injured David Shaw (hamstring) back. Out indefinitely with a very serious hamstring injury is All-Star Gavin White Kerry corner back Tom O’Sullivan was never able to move up-field until the final stages while Paul Geaney did a lot of work very far from goal just scoring 2 points.

So that leaves Dr Crokes with an away game v Na Gaeil and they will have home venue for the 3rd game.

NA GAEIL 3-11 ST BRENDAN’S 0-5

The margin of this victory was a big turn up to what was expected by many to be a close encounter. Na Gaeil struggled in the Club Championship and Brendan’s had the recently relegated Kerry SFC champions Austin Stacks in their ranks.

Of course, for so many years Na Gaeil contributed the majority of players to St Brendan’s, until they went out on their own.

A win for Na Gaeil was no way certain before the game, but to win by 15 points was incredulous.

The big plus for Na Gaeil and for Kerry in 2023 was the return to play of Stefan Okunbor after a very long layoff through injury. He will a big option for the Kerry midfield going forward. It was good to see Rob Monahan playing. The promising Ardfert 20-year-old has signed for the Aussie Rules, so we won’t see him in the plans for Kerry going forward.

Na Gaeil took control from the start and led by 7 points to 2 at half time. The second half was vintage Na Gaeil and St Brendan’s hardly raised a gallop managing just 3 more points.

Instead, 3 goals by Damien Bourke, and the two substitutes Jack Bourke, and Kieran O’Connor will give Na Gaeil a real gee up for round 2 of the Bishop Moynihan Cup. Na Gaeil put the game out of sight, but I have no doubt Brendan’s will come much stronger in Round 2.

rediced to fourteen men a renewed and battling second half showing saw them victorious on a 0-15 to 0-8 scoreline. On a crisp September evening i t was a satisfying win for both team & management. U13 BOYS: Our two teams played in the final round of the East Kerry League on Sunday morning at home against Keel/ Listry. The Division 1 game was a close and exciting match between the two teams with the lead exchanging hands numerous times throughout the game. In the end, a draw was a fair result. A very strong Keel/Listry was too good for our boys in the Division 5 game. Thanks to Keel/Listry for a great morning of football and also to Evan Horan, who did a great job as referee as always. This brings down the curtain on the U13 season. The coaches are very proud of the players for the effort they put in throughout the season and the many memorable games they were involved in. We look forward to continuing to help them in their development in the coming years.

Dr Crokes GAA

RESULT: Senior County Championship Dr. Crokes 0:14 Dingle 1:13. We had a disappointing start to our County Championship campaign with a two-point loss to Dingle in Austin Stack Park on Sunday last. We started the first half well, scoring the first two points of the game from the boot of Tony Brosnan, one free and one from play. The lead was short lived and Dingle were quick to respond, scoring two free within two minutes of play. Dingle saw an opportunity for goal in the 16th minute but Mark Fitzgerald cleared the line well to knock the ball over the bar for a Dingle point. The final 3 minutes of the first half were ours as Micheal Burns, Cian McMahon and Billy Courtney all kicked points from play, one after another to leaving us trailing 7 points to 8 points at half time. We started the second half with more determination to narrow the gap. Early points from Tony Brosnan and Mark O’Shea gave us a one-point lead after 6 minutes. We were very unlucky in the 7th minute when Cian McMahons shot at goal hit the post. The rebound fell to the feet of Evan Looney who was unfortunate not to find the back of the Dingle net. The turning point of the game came in the 20th minute of the half when Dingle’s Conor Geaney sent a bullet passed Shane Murphy and into the Crokes top corner. The last 5 minutes of the game belonged to Dingle and they ran out 2-point winners in the end. We now face Na Gaeil next weekend in Round 2.

EAST KERRY: East Kerry Club Championship Dr. Crokes 4:13 Spa 2:16. An incredible game on Saturday night that went to extra time. Played at 13 a side due to our numbers, the boys gave the supporters a fantastic night. We started slow and trailed by 1:02 to no score early. Eventually we found our groove and trailed 1:09 to 1:06 at half time, our goal coming from Liam Hennigan. We closed the gap in the second half and clawed our way back to a draw following a fantastic free from the 45 from Kacper Roebak who made some unbelievable saves to keep us alive. Spa who didn’t relent all night brought the game back to a draw again until the dying moments when Killian White kept his composure, sold a lovely dummy and finished beautifully to the net to send us to the final.
