It’s Destination Sunshine For Holidaymakers TOURISM stakeholders in Kerry were given a sneak preview of the choice of destinations from Cork Airport for those looking to travel this summer. At a special event hosted in the Killarney Park Hotel by Cork Airport last Thursday, the range of destinations from the airport was highlighted. It was also a chance to identify the opportunities for local tourism in the county resulting from significant inbound passenger growth. 2016 has already seen a number of new routes for Cork Airport as well as increased capacity across some of the most popular routes used by people from Kerry and other Munster counties. This has already resulted in an increase of 10.5% in passenger numbers at Cork Airport, which will welcome at least nine new routes this year, with a further three in the near future, from key tourism markets Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain and the US. New routes include Düsseldorf with Aer Lingus, London City, Nantes and La Rochelle with CityJet, Madrid with Iberia Express, Cardiff with Flybe, Southampton and Leeds Bradford with Aer Lingus Regional as well as Menorca with Lee Travel and Stein Travel. Management at the airport also warmly welcomed the news that the US Department of Transportation said that it “tentatively” finds that Norwegian Air International “should be issued the foreign air carrier permit”. This paves the way for the first transatlantic service from Cork to Boston. The airline has also committed to launching a Cork-Barcelona service and as well as New York service soon after. For anyone from Kerry looking to fly to the UK, Cork Airport has 14 destinations available including London City Airport. Sun seekers from the South West have a choice of 11 destinations in Spain, including firm favourites of Canary Islands, Alicante, Malaga and Barcelona. France is also very well served from Cork Airport. Kevin Cullinane, head of communications at Cork Airport, said: “Thousands of passengers from Kerry use Cork Airport each year for their travel needs, which is in easy reach of anywhere in the county.”
