Excellent Edel Hits All The Right Notes At Rotary Contest RESOUNDING rounds of applause rang out for talented Edel Crowley who took a bow when she was crowned overall winner of the prestigious Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition on Saturday night. The Franciscan Friary in Killarney hosted the 16th annual event, which followed competitions in the nearby Kerry Diocesan Youth Service Centre, Fairhill, on Friday and Saturday. The event, held in association with Killarney Advertiser, showcased some of Kerry’s brightest and best singers and instrumentalists. Edel, from Tralee, represented Rotary Ireland last year in the Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland Young Musician competition in the UK. Killarney Rotary president-elect Angela O’Connor described the event as a huge success and paid tribute to all involved. Angela, together with Rotary Ireland District Governor Declan Tyner presented the prizes. Killarney’s Hannah Sherry, on piano, won second prize while Catriona Fitzmaurice, Tralee, voice, was in third place. The runners-up were Caoimhe Doyle, Muckross, Killarney, on violin, and Charlotte O’Halloran, Tarbert, in the voice category. Orlaith O’Sullivan from Killorglin won the James Gleeson Memorial Trophy. James’s wife Grace and son Eoin presented the trophy in James’s memory. The competition, which had Tomas O Tuama and Donal O’Callaghan as adjudicators, has contributed hugely to raising the standards of classical music performance in the county over the years. Organisers Sean Treacy and Barry Murphy of Killarney Rotary Club established the contest in 2001. “It’s great to see that the competition is holding its numbers that every year with so many young performers taking part,” said Sean. “Killarney Rotary Club is already looking forward to next year’s event and is delighted to be keeping the bar raised in the music world. The Friary was a unique venue with its wonderful natural acoustics.”

Liebherr Retain All-Ireland Senior Inter-Firm Crown CONGRATULATIONS to Liebherr, Killarney, who retrained their All-Ireland Senior Inter-Firm crown in Tuam on Saturday last against 2015’s defeated finalists Medtronic on a scoreline of Medtronic (Galway) 0-7 Liebherr (Kerry) 0-10. Liebherr, who were playing against a strong breeze in the first half, were dealt a harsh blow when they were reduced to 14 men on 20 minutes and at that stage trailed four points to two. Liebherr upped their game and rallied late in the half to draw back level and go in at the break four points apiece. Liebherr started the second half on a mission and were three points up with 44 minutes played, Medtronic were not giving up though and with 10 minutes left to play their was only two points separating the sides. Liebherr tagged on another point and defended heroically during the closing few minutes as Medtronic tried in great numbers but ultimately in vain to get an equalising goal. “This was a superb team performance from the Liebherr team who were playing away from home against a team desperately trying to avenge last year’s defeat,” said a spokesman.
