Grandad is the bestman at the sprightly age of 91 years young JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@ GMAIL.COM

IT WAS a beautiful wedding day. A story of true love and romance. It was a family celebration at which the bestman stole the show. The latter who would have enjoyed the title paranymph at ancient Greek weddings, a ceremonial assistant to the bride and groom, was ebullient, charming, emotional, kind and caring. As well as tending to the young couple, he also proposed a toast to the newly weds, uttered words of wisdom, recalled his own wedded bliss, sang to the bride and groom and was the heart and soul of a day of family celebrations.

He had more energy than a 100 watt bulb and he made light work of a memorable wedding party. The bestman at a Humanist wedding ceremony was a mere 91 years young. He is perhaps the most senior bestman ever at a local wedding. He was as proud as punch as he graced the marriage of his beloved grandson. Wed were Kennyswell, Kilkenny, sweethearts, John Kealy, son of Paula and Michael Kealy and Aisling Ryan, daughter of John and the late Rose Ryan. Dressed to the nines in a new suit, shirt, tie and silk handkerchief, retired traffic warden, Jerry English of Cypress Avenue did two families and their friends proud as he steered his way through one of the greatest days of his very active life. Wedding ring is a family heirloom Continued from Page 3 “My son John has always been very close to his grandad,” the former Paula English told The Reporter. “Since he was a child, he has always called my father ‘dad’. “John came to me, said he was getting married and added that he would like to have his grandad as his bestman. “Would grandad be up to the occasion in his senior years,” he asked me, Paula explained. Grandad Jerry answered the six mark question with a resounding ‘yes’. “Daddy was over the moon,” said Paula. “ It gave him a new lease of life.” To mark the occasion, Jerry English made a gesture that would marry his own wedding to the marriage of his grandson. When Jerry and his wife, Pauline who passed away nine years ago, celebrated 25 years together, Pauline arranged to have a silver wedding ring made for her beloved husband. The ring, fashioned by Dessie Byrne at Kilkenny Design Workshops, was passed to grandson John at

the marriage ceremony and will now become a family heirloom. “I’d prefer John to have the ring, I am not bringing it to the grave,” were Jerry’s words.

The service was at Butler House, Patrick Street, followed by a champagne reception in the beautiful gardens. Continued on Page 8

Crafty lot at our Beer Festival Mao is not a sun worshipper

Cats tend to avoid hot tin roofs in warm weather. Our Mao is no different. The Clever Tom Cat is not a sun worshipper but loves to wallow in the shade, watching his local world go by. Dominique Borello photographed the Kilkenny Cat in his own little cool retreat, surrounded by foliage and flowers, as snug as a bug in a rug. But, more important, as cool as a breeze.

THE Kilkenny Craft Beer Festival is focused on growing the Irish Craft Beer Industry. The festival runs from July 5 to 10. The week will have a grand finale on Friday, Ireland’s Largest Craft Beer Tasting ever with over 300 Irish Micro Brewed Beers. Celebrations continue on Saturday with the Craft on Draught Fest, a draught beer festival with over 20 breweries and all the trimmings. With engaging and valuable events for the Industry, fun and entertainment for the public, the festival is now a a must attend event for all involved in the craft beer Industry and beer lovers alike. Continuing the industry focus and following on from last year’s Speed Mash In – Buyer meets Brewer, event organisers are reaching out to every Irish Micro Brewery in the country and off-trade partners. The belief is that the

relationship between brewery and retailer is of critical importance to the industry. The offtrade retailers supply in the region of 50% of the Irish Craft Beer to the consumer annually. Beer lovers In true Kilkenny festival style, the craft event has a full week of activities, see facebook.com/KilkennyCraftBeerFestival. There are events for beer lovers of all guises. Film buffs, historians and craft beer enthusiasts are all catered for. The festival comes courtesy Kilkenny’s local brewery, Costellos. At Costellos they are all about the craft. They started the brewing company to ensure the craft of brewing thrives in Kilkenny. Their motto is that we need our brewers as much as we need our butchers, bakers and candlestick makers. All events are held in participating pubs. Tickets can be booked on Eventbrite, search for #KKCBF16 and follow us on Twitter (@KKCraftBeerFest) and Facebook (facebook. com/KilkennyCraftBeerFestival) for updates.

Conversions: The Road to Damascus and Larchfield JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@GMAIL.COM

THE BIBLE reminds us of the conversion of St Paul on the Road to Damascus. Today, The Reporter highlights a modern day conversion that features St Paul and a cast of young Irish, English, African and Asian students. At the fulcrum of the drama, a story to warm hearts, broaden horizons and promote cultural relations is a GAA club in South East London and a school in the same area that proudly sports the name St Paul’s Academy. Throw in an international Gaelic Football Challenge at James Stephens GAA Club KRPH JURXQGV LQ /DUFK¿HOG Herculean work by a husband and wife team with roots in our city and a host of local families that opened their homes to sporting visitors and we have a fascinating adventure. Circa 15 years ago, St Paul’s $FDGHP\ KDG D JDS WR ¿OO LQ LWV sporting calendar. Soccer-mad students played from September to Easter. (QWHU WKH LQÀXHQFH RI D collection of Irish teachers, welcomed to London where at the time there was a dearth of masters. Innovation was to be the name of the game. Someone suggested Gaelic Football to keep students active from Easter to end of term. A new craze took hold and ÀRXULVKHG A smash hit Here we skip God only knows how many planning meetings and progress reports to a stage where the schooling saints were to become a feeder club for their GAA neighbours, Dulwich Harps GAA Club. From kicking and heading a ball, big numbers of students swapped to catching and kicking.

An experiment proved to be a smash hit. Fast forward to last week and a few days before that and a school cum club, representing St Paul’s Academy and Dulwich Harps GAA Club came, saw and conquered a James Stephens U14 Gaelic Football team.. A game that up to about the \HDU GLGQœW HYHQ ¿JXUH RQ the sporting Richter Scale in a South London School is now a way of life for a multitude of kids, chunks of whom have no Irish heritage. A school of 1,200 boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 16, a team of 90 teachers, at least half of them from some part of Ireland, now has a twin sporting curriculum of soccer and Gaelic. Many are credited with the sporting spectacular, none more so than Cavan-born Tom Denning, chairman of Dulwich Harps. Musical fame Throw in a congregation of Irish-born teachers, including Aisling Irish from Glenmore in South Kilkenny who teaches religious knowledge and Kilkennyman Eddie Brophy, a master of design and technology and you have the nucleus of what some might term a revolution. Or perhaps it was the renaissance of a game that may have been popular during the years when many Irish families emigrated to England. The Kilkenny connections continue with Michael Hogan and his wife, Mary, a member of the Brady family of musical fame from Fr Murphy’s Square in our city. Mary and Michael moved to South London in their younger years, set up in the bar business and ran a very successful White Hart Pub in Peckham until recent times when they returned home to live in Castlecomer.

It was Michael and Mary, long time admirers of St Paul’s and Dulwich Harps who smoothed what we might call 6W 3DXOÂśV 5RDG WR /DUFKÂżHOG LQ Kilkenny when they arranged local family accommodation for a visiting party of 20 young players and their mentors. Pat Winston, a son of Castlerea, Roscommon parents, principal of St Paul’s Academy, takes up the story. Brilliant vehicle “Our school takes part in lots of small Gaelic Football competitions around London. Many of our students have played for South London in the FĂŠile, with successes at several age groups,â€? he told The Reporter. “We were based in Kilkenny IRU ÂżYH GD\V RI RXU ,ULVK WRXU and we received a mavellous reception from club chairman, Tommy Lanigan, Fran Whelan and all at James Stephens GAA Club and the wider local community. It was a fantastic experience for everybody, our players, managers Michael Maher and Paul O’Donoghue. “Michael and Mary Hogan were absolutely brilliant. The time here was a fantastic experience for all of us. Sport is a brilliant vehicle to help young people with personal development. We exchanged mementos with James Stephens and we received a book on the history of the famous Village club.â€? During a hectic tour, the visitors played Gaelic Football against a collection of GAA clubs and were guests of the Munster Council at the Munster Football Championship game between Waterford and Tipperary. At home and away, it would be fair to say, the academy and their Dulwich friends are always on the ball. Big match pics Pages 98&99

L’Arche: Born Kilmoganny 1978 THE International federation of L’Arche has celebrated its 38th birthday in our country. The first community here was founded on May 31, 1978 in Kilmoganny, County Kilkenny. Since then, communities have been established in Belfast, Cork and Dublin, helping people with intellectual disabilities live and thrive, by providing a home, daily care, and support for education and employment. L’Arche, a French word for the Ark, is an international federation of faith communities where people with and without an intellectual disability share life together. Their mission is to make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities revealed through mutually transforming and interdependence relationships. L’Arche was founded in 1964 in a small French village by Jean Vanier, Canadian Catholic philosopher, theologian and humanitarian. Distressed by the appalling conditions he saw in institutions where people with intellectual disabilities were being treated, Jean invited two men with intellectual

disabilities to live with him. The three created home life together, sharing daily tasks and times of relaxation as a family. From these simple beginnings L’Arche has grown into an international federation of 147 communities in over 35 countries. “We believe that each human being has the capacity to grow and fulfil their potential for contributing their gift to the world. People with intellectual disabilities have gifts that are needed by our world”, Mairead BolandBrabazon, CEO at L’Arche Ireland says. First community L’Arche Kilkenny was the first community in Ireland. Jean Vanier and his sister Thrésé were personally involved in its foundation, with the people of Kilmoganny. During the past 38 years the community has grown . Today L’Arche Kilkenny includes four residential houses, a Café, four Independent Living Core Member houses, a garden workshop and a craft workshop. L’Arche houses are home to 14 people with intellectual disabilities and many inter-

KCAT: How great thou art JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@GMAIL.COM

AN EXHIBITION by artists, young and young at heart, is well worth taking a detour to enjoy. The end of term show at Kilkenny Collective for Art and Talent (KCAT) was unveiled in Callan on Friday. It is a magnificent collection of 160 pieces by resident and other artists at the Art and Study Centre who attended a course throughout the year.

On an evening when some 150 family members and friends of the artists turned up to celebrate the end of another term, there were several reasons to be happy as many paintings sold on the first evening of the exhibition that runs until June 15. Also on display was a collection of pieces of sculpture and wood-carving by students, splendid works of art. Visitors were welcomed by tutor, Paul Bokslag and the

exhibition was opened by Alice Bennett, training co-ordinator at KCAT. There was a magnificent display of masks created by students, ranging from butterflies to cats. All students were invited to contribute to an inter-active group collage which turned out to be a fantastic collection. The attendance was a mix of families, friends and supporters of the KCAT Centre. Artists at the centre are

male and female and range in age from 18 upwards. The exhibition will be open on week days from 10am to 4pm and on Sundays from noon to 4pm. Sun blazes on Super Saturday JIMMY RHATIGAN JIMMYRHATIGAN@GMAIL.COM

FOR AS long as some of us care to remember, our national broadcaster gave us Scrap Saturday, a satirical radio sketch show created by the talented Dermot Morgan of Fr Ted fame. The show was very popular and at the end of practically every week, a huge audience tuned in to what many then called the wireless to lisen to the antics of prominent politicians and their allies. Saturday became known as Scrap Saturday. Last weekend, Saturday to be precise, we had what we could have called Super or Sensational Saturday. Our city was as busy as a fish ‘n’ chipper after the lads had enjoyed their fill of porter.

The city centre was what we colloquially call jammers, packed to the gills perhaps, in keeping with fishy parlance. Dubs, thousands of them, were here for an inter-county Gaelic Football joust with Laois in Nowlan Park. That in itself is worth recording. For a Gaelic Football clash of such dimension is certainly a rarity for our hallowed turf that is more used to sliotars and camáns. Business bonanza Throw God only knows how many thousands of Cat Laughs aficionados into the mix and you had what we might call a Super Saturday that brought a business bonanza, particularly for restaurants, hotels, B&Bs and local bars. Kilkenny was on a high, metaphorically speaking of course,

wearing its best as the sun splashed down, blessing a city that was enjoying perhaps its busiest hours for many a day. Dublin supporters were in a good mood that got even better as they pushed Laois to one side. A Sensational Saturday finished some time in the early hours of Sunday morning. The Cat continued to Laugh right through the weekend and was voted another spectacular success. Many more extravaganzas are on the way for our festival city that, married to sport, can bring welcome financial injections for our progressive business community. The pendulum is certainly swinging in the right direction for Kilkenny City and County. Long may that continue.

Strathmore first in dementia

Dementia first: Staff and families of Strathmore Lodge

A LOCAL nursing home has recorded a first in Ireland. Over half the staff at Strathmore Lodge Nursing Home, Callan, along with family of some residents have just completed a course in dementia which gives them a whole new insight into the care that residents with the condition require. Director of Nursing at Strathmore, Sarah McGrath is very passionate about dementia and has paved the way for all staff to become ambassadors for residents with a dementia illness. She is continually improving her knowledge to enhance the lives of residents in her care. Her other passions are Palliative and End of Life Care, big parts of dementia illness. Sarah feels that this captures the person-centred and life enabling approach that underpins dementia care. Aim of Dementia Care is to enable every person to live as well as possible right up until he/she passes away. Staff and families started their Dementia Training taking on a model by Dr Gemma MM Jones, dementia care consultant. Training focused on covering key aspects of developing knowledge base for professional dementia care. It provided a conceptual framework for understanding behavioural changes and the range of options for care, communication and environmental intervention.

Better relationship Staff can now explain differences in approaches for “frail elderly” versus “people with dementia”. They can use up to date language to describe dementia and care interventions, have a framework for understanding and describing the changes that can occur in dementing illnesses, sensory, perceptual, cognitive, emotional, behavioural and physical. Staff can access different types of fear behaviour in different behavioural stages. They also know about other illness/injuries/conditions that can cause cognitive difficulties and thus further exacerbate dementia symptoms. They are aware of the need for documenting, reporting and having the symptoms further investigated and treated. Sarah McGrath told The Reporter the course will enable staff and families to have a better relationship with residents. Those who completed the course but are not included in picture are Geraldine O’Meara, Kayleigh Moore, Frances Hickey, Christine Channon, Shino Mathew, Teresa Brennan, Cathriona Holden, Melanie O Driscoll, Leoni George, Sandra Pestana, Sabine Fullbrook, Maria Garcia, Pauline Donovan, Jill Callanan, Kate McDermott, Carrie-Ann Holden, Susan Kinsella, Joan McCormack, Linda Houlihan.

Flashbackter s to the Leinrling Senior Hu een final betw nd Kilkenny a Dublin in 2014

Leinster Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final

Dodgy: But Cats can lick cream BY PAT TREACY KILKENNY begin the defence of their Leinster and All-Ireland titles when they take on Dublin in Portlaoise on Saturday, 7pm. The champions are heading into this game without Richie Hogan who is ruled out with a serious hand injury. The fitness of Michael Fennelly and Jackie Tyrrell will also be monitored closely while the return to action of midfielder Conor Fogarty and

ace attacker Eoin Larkin will be welcomed by management and fans. James Maher who broke his knee cap in an accident at work on the farm is back doing light training. Dublin have the advantage of a championship game under their belts with an impressive 13-point win over Wexford, 2-19 to 0-13 in mid-May. The challengers looked impressive as they swept aside the Model County. The speed and skill of Eamon Dil-

lon, Niall McMorrow, Darragh Plunkett, David ‘Dotsy’ O’Callaghan, Mark Schutte and free taker David Treacy was very impressive. Defensively. Dublin have Liam Rushe back in his best position at centre back with Ciaran Crummey on the wing. Oisin Gough is doing well at corner back while Paul Schutte should be back in contention for a starting position in defence after recent surgery. The Kerry-born Darragh O’Connell has blossomed

into a fine midfielder as John McCaffrey’s sidekick. Ryan O’Dwyer made his first appearance of the year when he came on as a sub at centre forward and scored a point. Kilkenny are heading into this game under the radar. They haven’t played since their league semi-final defeat to Clare in mid-pril. Vulnerable There is a feeling that the champions could be vulnerable going into this game as they have a number of injuries and no match practice.

The Cats have looked vulnerable in front of their own goal at different times during the league campaign. The concession of three goals to Clare in the league semifinal is something Brian Cody and his management team will have looked to rectify in training during the past number of weeks. Dublin have everything going for them and they will be looking to get a good start and put Kilkenny on the back foot from the opening whistle.

The challengers attack has huge pace with Eamon Dillon a major goal threat and Mark Schutte is a very mobile target man on the edge of the square. Niall McMorrow plays a roving role at centre forward. He helped himself to four points from play in a Man of the Match performance against Wexford. Kilkenny will have to be at their best if they are to overcome the Dublin challenge. The presence of Michael Fennelly in the middle third of the field will be very desirable for this game and for future challenges. The Ballyhale man’s fitness is paramount to Kilkenny’s championship ambitions this year. He played with his club in their three championship games in April and May but he retired in the closing stages of the game against Danesfort with a slight hamstring twinge. Brian Cody is a master at having Kilkenny in the right frame of mind for the next challenge and we can expect them to be fully prepared for Dublin. This will be a difficult game for the champions but they should have enough know how to overcome the Sky Blues.

Omega 3s deliver results for mums and babies THE health beneďŹ ts of omega3s are well known in relation to heart health, cholesterol lowering beneďŹ ts and reducing inammation e.g. rheumatoid arthritis. The speciďŹ c beneďŹ ts of healthy fats for pregnant women and their babies is relatively new. Key beneďŹ ts for babies include improved vision and cognitive development, better sleeping patterns and a healthier distribution of body fat. For mums, beneďŹ ts include a more healthy duration of pregnancy and a possible decrease in postnatal depression. Unfortunately many expectant women and ladies planning pregnancies are regularly consuming enough of the Omega 3 (EPA & DHA) fats in their usual diets. DHA is an abbreviation for Docosa – Hexanoic –Acid! BENEFITS FOR BABY A scientiďŹ c study published in the journal Lipids measured improved visual acuity in 4-month-old infants whose mothers received DHA- Omega 3 fats daily during pregnancy. Research published last year in Nutrients looked at cognitive development in infants born to mothers consuming seafood throughout pregnancy compared with non-seafood eaters. Important insights included signiďŹ cantly improved language and social activity scores at 15 -18 months of age. Researchers also observed a signiďŹ cant reduction in the number of children with suboptimal IQ and behaviour scores. Another beneďŹ t for baby is better sleep. In 2012, researchers measured improved sleep / wake states in infants of mothers who consumed 300 mg DHA daily during pregnancy compared with infants whose mothers received a placebo. It found more appropriate healthy patterns of fat deposition in babies born to mums consuming more omega-3 DHA through diet compared with mums who had lower intake during pregnancy. BENEFITS FOR MUM In a recent study published in BioMed Research International, the gestation

period lengthened by four days for mums who increased DHA intake by 300 mg per day through ďŹ sh and other dietary sources. A shorter gestation time is associated with greater risk of ADHD in school-age children. It is thought that oily ďŹ sh consumption more than once per week correlates with a decreased risk of hyperactivity compared with women who ate no ďŹ sh during pregnancy. Some studies indicate that 300mg DHA omega 3 fats during pregnancy reduced symptoms of post-natal depression, however further studies are needed to conďŹ rm this. DAILY REQUIREMENTS AND BEST SOURCES The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends that all pregnant women should consume an additional 7001400mg/week of DHA (EFSA, 2010). This is in addition to the requirement of 1750mg/week combined EPA and DHA. This increased intake can be achieved by consuming 1-2 portions of oil-rich ďŹ sh per week (FSAI, 2011). The best sources of DHA are trout, salmon, mackerel and sardines (FSAI, 2011). MERCURY Certain types of ďŹ sh can be a source of environmental contaminants such as methylmercury. High levels of methylmercury may be harmful to the foetus. Pregnant women should avoid the consumption of marlin, shark, ray and swordďŹ sh and limit consumption of tuna to one serving of fresh tuna (150g), or two 240g cans of tinned tuna per week. App of the week

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Battery Share

Now a major motion picture staring starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, Me Before You is an existential work that’s masquerading as a beach read, a novel with beautiful characters who have complicated, textured souls. After a motorcycle accident leaves Will Traynor paralyzed, he loses his desire to live. What Will doesn’t know is that Lou Clark is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they’re going to change the other for all time.

Unfortunately, batteries have a knack for dying when we’re running late, and no doubt many of us have been on the receiving end of several missed calls and texts simply because our phone couldn’t turn on. Battery Share warns selected friends and loved ones when you have a low battery. It also notifies you when their phone is about to die. Ned Egan

*LUO $XFWLRQ 3DUW

‘Think of what lousers you are’ NED EGAN HELLO READERS, musing last night on the coming season of sun-stroke, heatquake, shee-gees’ and vulture dodging, I reflected on the permanent terrors of our lion-haunted summer. And then I woke up! We herewith proceed (retrospectively – and more factually) - to a viciously cold winter night back in the 1890s, and the tale of the resolute Molly Connolly, 15, and her wilful but brave little sister, Babsie, aged 10. The girls fled their old stone home at midnight, and fought a battle against the dire (and badly nicknamed) ‘Dacent Boy’ in the Five Acre. Said Boy was trying to prevent their escape – because he’d laid down plenty loot with Mikey Connolly, in order to secure the hand of the Mollers. This loopy dreadful creature now prowls Bilzies Wood, where the girls are holding out. He carries a shotgun, and would use it, to get his ‘intended’ back – and dragged to the altar. For even twelve year olds could be wed under the Brit law of the time. I have to cut the ‘look back’ a bit short, but a magic madra and Shem the swallow have shown up to help. Shem is almost ready to go spying, has been granted a tiny bit of the other threes strong points, so they’ll all have some contact when he spy-flies off to find what the Dacent and his Wiccan ma are up to. Long speeches The Shem has already made several long speeches, which have vexed the magic madra, and even strained the patience of the girls. But he’s a brave and good natured little bird; though rather overly fond and full of himself. Now, having (apparently) run out of things to praise himself about, he prepares to go. Although the ‘trio’ will have a sort of (nowadays speak) telepathic connection with him, no messages can be sent. They can see – through his eyes - if he gets into trouble; but they can’t help – or even warn him. Folks – even ‘ghostie creature/human’ contacts have limits. At least the trio will see what Shem sees. But if some dire fate befalls him, it’s ‘goodnight and goodbye, Shem’. And then they’re all

in the dark, for the madra would never get away with hiding in a skeoch bush, or an old crow’s nest. The Wiccan crowd have the odd limitation too; they can’t spot real small yokes. The same as we can see elephants in a jungle – but maybe not a lizard. As readers of previous episodes will know, Shem is a very voluble little flier, and miles – maybe millennia away – from his tiny rellies who signal our summers’ arrival. Not for them the bigdealing ways of Shem. The only way I can reconcile their differences in behaviour to our little Passerine pal is to accept that the bould Shem is a

spirit – not from the past – but maybe from the future. Which would explain things handy – as Shem then could be ultra-modern – and our present moth-hunters of a Neanderthal genre! Think about Heaven Hard to believe, folks – but don’t lots of us believe about Heaven? Which is all about Past and Future – but no Present – as far as I know. We are all still waiting for the Shem to depart. It seems as though his chirping has taken an enormous lump of time – but as we humans rock along vocally at a rate of 200 words a minute, it’s easy to imagine a fast twittering bird exceeding that. So, hardly any time at all

elapses; but the girls and the madra are still a bit nervous: the more seconds that they’re hanging about – the more likely the Dacent might show up. But now, at last, comes a promise from ‘Mr Busy Beak’ – as magic madra, quite irreverently, has begun to start regarding him. “Folks, Shem chirrups brightly, with a deft little slap of his wings – “I can’t spend all night entertaining you – must be off in a few secs. But first I have to tell you how I came to be selected for this important job. Years ago (it could be the future – but we’ll stick with ‘years ago) there was a deadly crisis among the

Passerine Nation. I may have mentioned it somewhere before, but we all make the round trip to Africa every year, when alive and on this planet, that is. Bad countries Anyway, going down the world, and coming back again, we have to land betimes to feed, and rest. There are bad countries we can’t avoid along the route - only a few of them - but when we drop down our weary little bodies, they massacre us. Yep, with shotguns like that big Purdey the Dacent reputedly carries. Thousands of Passerines, corncrakes; anything that wings it, gets topped. The losses were so bad in

this period in question that a great meeting of all the branches of the nation was scheduled for Blackbog, up near Tullahought. Tens of thousands of fliers showed up. Much chirrupings and twitterings were the order of the first few days, and a bit of romance thrown in here and there to keep the more physical members happy – and quiet. Anyway, the ‘Meeting’ was getting nowhere, fast – (as the more common aviators put it.) So I, the bould Shem, took matters in hand, or claw – if you’d rather have it. I hopped up on a big standing stone, waved my wings, and screeched: ‘Oi, you lot! Did you fly here from all over just to squeak, show off, and run amok with some naughty chicky? That’s not what we’re here for – we’ve gathered to try to solve this prob of foreign galoots douncing our rellies with bang-bangs full of death-lead missiles. So give up what you’re at, and pay attention to me, Shem, King of the Swallow (Passerine) Nation!’ Got their goat This statement got their attention – and ‘their goat’ – as the Hums are wont to say. ‘Who d’yiz think y’are?’ was the most intellectual of chirpy thrusts – as our mob isn’t real famous in literary circles. Another lad squalled: ‘you’re not the boss of me’ – to which I replied – ‘that’s what you think, chappie’ – and gave him a swift belt of my right wing – which appendage, folks, is not an inconsiderable weapon. All of a sudden, quiet ruled. They were all obviously thinking – ‘Hey! A violent Swallow! What’s going on here?’ That shock was needed: now, another: “Listen up, all you bloody Passerines: while you chatter and get all romantic – thousands of our little cousins are perishing in hails of killing-lead. While you frolic, brave wee fliers are diving towards the earth for the very last time. So I tell you now: talk serious about this disaster, or clear off – and think what a useless feathery mob you are, as you fly away. Think of the lonely little mud houses in a thousand old barns that will never again ring happy with the songs of cheery little Passerine chickadees. And think what useless lousers you are‌â€? The arrival of Venus as an Evening star on Monday just after Sunday’s New Moon, should be seen as offering a fresh start to all signs. True, these are early days and it will take some time to adjust to this cosmic tempo. It’s likely also the case that there are some matters still to be resolved before you feel you can move on Your ruling planet, Venus, appears as an Evening star from this Monday. Venus is associated with both relationships and with money. This new phase - which lasts for some months - could have accelerated development as it comes so soon after a new Moon. Before the end of this week a significant financial partnership could form Following Sunday’s New Moon in your sign, Venus arrives as an Evening star also in Gemini. At this point, it could feel as though all the lights are on you. Others may well be hanging on your every word yet are also concerned about your motivation and long-term plans. The middle of this week could find you caught up in tense negotiations. The special thing about this week is that it begins with a New Moon that is quickly followed by Venus’arrival as an Evening star. Though all this takes place in neighbouring Gemini, all signs are affected. For you, a fresh look at how you market yourself, revision of your CV and perhaps an updated wardrobe could all be manifestations of this vibrational shift. Mercury continues its journey across the apex of your solar chart.Talking about your career, hopes and aspirations may be necessary - especially as it becomes apparent that colleagues and partners aren’t working to your agenda. Hold the thought that Sunday’s New Moon andVenus’arrival as an Evening Star marks another phase and that dialogue is essential - even if it’s discomforting. Sunday’s New Moon followed byVenus’arrival as an Evening Star on Monday accents the career zone of your solar chat. Over the next couple of weeks you could launch an initiative for completion in March 2017. Putting together a team, relaying your plans, creating a business plan and generally organising this venture should suit you well.

Your ruling planet, Venus, appears as an Evening Star as of Monday - and in Gemini, another of the Air signs. Coming just a day after the Gemini New Moon this signals a promising new start (especially where relationships are concerned). This could indeed be the start of something big! Tempting as it may be to think forward, there are matters from the past requiring resolution. An important new bond could form this week - and with someone who has your entire well-being at heart (financial, emotional and spiritual). The combination of Sunday’s New Moon and Venus’ arrival as an Evening star on Monday should suit you well. True, it might not seem that way midweek when Mercury opposes Mars in your sign.

Sunday’s New Moon (in your opposite sign) is followed by Venus’ arrival as an Evening Star (also in Gemini). It’s probable that those close to you are preparing new adventures - with one project scheduled for completion next March. Your role may be not just to support, but to advise and facilitate. It might help to know that the week begins with a New Moon (think fresh start) and Venus’ arrival as an Evening Star on Monday. Hopefully this heralds a break in stormy clouds that have gathered for several months. Fresh dialogue could open up. True, it’s likely that there are problems still to face and tricky issues to negotiate mid-week. Midweek Mercury and Mars oppose one another accenting the back-bone of your solar chart as they do. It might be as well to anticipate hiatus regarding a property, family or career matter: and yes, the issue may link all three together. If you’ve already moved you might think about doing so again - or det New Moons are said to bring fresh starts. Sunday’s lunation is enhanced by the appearance of Venus as Evening Star. Those Pisces forever waiting for‘something to turn up’may realise that wish come true. By next weekend and thanks to‘good’news brought about through connections with someone born under one of the Air signs , you could feel significant progress is made

Harmony continues family tradition GLENS Harmony from the Willie Mullins Stable stamped herself as a mare with a future when she pulverised the opposition in the mares’ bumper at Ballinrobe. Out of the nine time winner Glens Music, the daughter of King’s Theatre is an own sister to the 12 times winning mare Glens Melody and she looks set to carry the family flag with pride. Connections felt that she was good enough to make her debut in Listed company and while she acquitted herself well it was a bridge too so early. Back in maiden company, she was backed as if there was no tomorrow and she never gave those brave to trade at cramped odds the slightest cause for concern. Once jockey Patrick Mullins gave her the office, she finished in splendid isolation, 13 lengths clear of Bridge Native. While bumpers this time of the year are difficult to assess there

is no doubt but the winner is something special. When owner Barry Connell replaceed rider Danny Mullins with Adrian Heskin as retained jockey many felt that his career was on a downward spiral. Considerable talents In the very best traditions of this great game be bounced back and is now one of the most sought after riders. He gave racegoers a glimpse of his considerable talents when getting Reafadda home in a tight finish. A horse with fragile legs, the son of Zagreb has proved very difficult to keep sound but on his day he is a

match for the best. Mullins always had him in the firing line and he showed plenty of resolve the get the better of a protracted dual with the Gordon Elliott runner Uretheoneiwant. Owned and trained by John Ryan, the winner is equally at home over fences. Pat Flynn who trains not far from Kilkenny greeted Dixie Highway after it proved to be a most fortuitous winner of the 80-102 handicap hurdle. A well supported favourite, the five year old looked booked for second place. However, leader Urban Vic blundered badly, handing the initiative to Dixie and with Mark Enright riding like a man inspired held on a fast diminishing neck. Ballybrit target Danny Mullins and John Ryan teamed to again to cause a major upset in the opening maiden hurdle when Bitview Colin narrowly defeated the heavily supported Delegate. A 25/1 chance, Bitview had shown promise when

finishing third at Tipperary but was still friendless in the betting market and failed to read the script as he was always prominent before swooping late to land the spoils. Ryan told all and sundry that Danny was riding out of his skin. The JP McManus

owned Shanpallas landed the father and mother of a gamble when capturing the featured two mile and four Handicap hurdle in the hands of Barry Geraghty. Shanpallas went to post at 11/8 but he had to be well stoked up to do the business. The gamble looked in

some jeopardy at the second last when the favourite was being herd ridden and made a mistake, But he rallied well take the money by half a length from Cliff House. Winning handler Charles Byrnes intimated that the Plate at Ballybrit is the target.
