Maple Madness • Trolling for Trout • Sweet Signs of Spring There you have it Naples, three wonderful local news topics that are guaranteed to please! Maple Syrup, Rainbow Trout and Spring emerging! This winter was full of cold and loss. I lost members of my own family and members of my community. Naples has had much grieving this winter with these many tragic and sudden losses. Yet, I saw members of this community rally around those that are grieving, those that are chronically ill, and those that are struggling. Dinners were provided, fundraisers rolled through the town, Facebook members agree to disagree, and Spring returns with the sweet smell of boiling sap, the DEC shocking of Naples Creek set for March 19th, Trout Derbies are on the horizon and the Naples St. J’s 5K is just up ahead. We can chose to linger in the cold and darkness or we can chose to lift our spirit up to the returning sun in celebration of Life, of changes, of growing wiser and of the beauty of the world around us. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t things that are going to tick us off, what it means is that we have a choice every day to sourly complain or to savor the sweetness of another day in this natural beauty we call home. Go for it. Fish. Go to a sugar shack. Enjoy the local music(Hello Dolly at NCS March 6-8). Relish in the melting snow and near balmy weather ahead of us(27-32!)Seek ways to heal, to stand up for what you believe in, and to be the best Spring Chicken you know how to be. Or not. But either way know that the sap will still flow, the trout will still swim upstream, and Spring will still emerge as life continues long after we are gone. Driving up Coates Road on a very cold but sunny day in February we made the right decision in taking Kim’s Subaru in visiting Wohlschlegel’s Maple Farm. I met Bobbi Wohlschlegel at Vintage Vines & Valentines a week prior where she was serving Maple Syrup and a host of other Maple products. When asked if I could come to the Farm to do an interview Bobbi enthusiatically invited me up anytime and got me in touch with her husband and business partner Garry. Kim and I parked a top Coates Road which felt like being on a small mountain overlooking the Valley.

Wohlschlegel’s Maple Farm is nestled right at the top of the Hill. The views are amazing. We found Garry in the Sugar Shack running Maple Syrup through one of the last filters before bottling to sell. The thick humid air smelled heavenly of sweetness. Garry Garry Wohlschlegel greeted us with the same enthusiastic welcome as Bobbi did. Garry described what he was doing-the final filtering and as that finished up we began not just an interview, but a tour of a process so grand and beautiful-a harmonious arrangement between Mother Nature and man.

We left the Sugar Shack and proceeded to walk a trail to the edge of what seemed liked endless rows of Maple Trees. Garry proceeded to tell us about how the farm came to fruition. A few years back at a crossroads in his life Garry and his family chose to invest and expand their Maple Farm. Garry is the Co-owner of Wohlschlegel’s Naples Maple Farm and hard farm work is not new to him as he was raised on a Dairy and Vineyard in Naples, NY. He has been a hobby Bruce “Harley” Wohlschlegel maple syrup producer for ~ 20 years with his Father, Bruce “Harley” Wohlschlegel. Bruce has been a hobby Maple Sugar Producer for over 70 years. Garry said that Bobbi, his wife and Co-owner, who also grew up on a small farmstead, was really the driving force in all aspects of their business. Garry walked spiritedly ahead of Kim and I as we walked the snowshoe trail packed by Bobbi’s trip down to the Pump House earlier that week.

The breathtaking views, the breeze in the top of the trees, the tubing and taps all aligned, and the occasional snap of a cold tree was inspiring and comforting. As we walked I could not help

to think that in the world of Sap collection not much has changed over the years. Indigenous people of this region tapped trees with wood, boiled with heated rocks and sweetened their venison with Maple Syrup. They passed knowledge on to colonist and there are historical stories of indigenous folks and colonist having huge Maples Sap celebrations and week long fires for boiling down. We still tap, collect, boil and enjoy the sweet nutritious syrup. Maybe our tools have Nature’s sweet treat changed but the benefits, and the relationship between man and nature have not.

The Wohlschlegel family has been making maple syrup for the last 15 years as a hobby in a converted chicken coup (Harley’s Sap Shack).

They started with 150 Taps on gravity fed tubing and buckets with a 3’ x 5’ evaporator. They would make about 30 gallons of syrup in a good year. In September of 2010 Wohlshlegels took a “huge step” and built a new Sugar house. Their farm operation expanded to approximately 4100+ Taps, a 3’ x 12’ evaporator, a Steam-away, and a Reverse Osmosis system on a wetAdvanced tap monitoring dry conductive vacuum system.

They boast a highly energy “efficient state of the art system”! When Garry described how they reuse the water that is boiled out of the sap, how the reverse osmosis system works, and the amount of energy they save when producing I was astounded.

The Farm is located on 60 acres, 43 which are maples. Much of the remaining land is leased to a local farmer for corn. The farm also has a small apple orchard and Christmas tree plot started. After stopping for a brief tour of the Pump House we continued our hike through the beautiful land. Garry told us of his son Cameron’s work to preserve and create a sustainable forest. The Wohlschlegel sugar bush is a Certified Tree Farm which is managed by Cameron who is a Forester. Garry pointed out a young grove of Maples that his son was managing and the benefits of the work he had done. Wohlschlegels are committed to sustaining forests, watershed and healthy habitats and they have a forest management plan to uphold these beliefs.

Both of their daughters are also involved with the Family Farm.

Caitlin Wohlschlegel Smith helps out with the Farmers Markets and the maple products business. Koral manages FB and the sale of Maples Products out west. The Wohlshlegels also have many friend farm hands that help with the Maple Season. As we were hiking back up the hill towards the Sugar Shack I could see why! It is physically a lot of work checking lines, managing the forest, walking the hill. My favorite part of walking the farm was the rest stops where I could turn and breathe in the crisp, clean air, take in the big sky, hills, sunshine, and feel the stillness all around. About half way up the hill I could smell the sweetness of the Sugar Shack. Garry’s father drove up to help bottle. His father, Bruce, is a spry man in his nineties and was ready to help out in the sugar shack.

When we got back to the Sugar Shack Garry showed us the retail store with Maple Products of all sorts and a poster caught my eye with the benefits of Maple Syrup.When I got home I looked up Article continued next page at top right...

the benefits of Pure maple syrup and found it to be very rich in many essential vitamins and minerals, especially zinc and manganese. Maple Syrup is an Antioxidant Against Cancer. I applaud their efforts in maintaining the relationship that has been handed down over generations.

Budding Readers - Naples

Submitted by Janice Murphy The Naples Library has partnered with Budding Readers to bring the Budding Readers Program to the Naples community. Watch for announcements in your school newsletter, the library, and fliers around town. To date, more than 70 “bundles of books” have been delivered to Naples families! Babies, up to 24 months of age in the Naples School District can receive a free “bundle of books” along with our Parent Guide, which contains tips for reading to babies and young children. In addition, a gift of age appropriate books is provided for siblings through age 10. Families who have received a bundle of books for their babies are also sent a coupon twice a year (up to age 5). They can bring the coupon to the Naples Library and select a new free book. The Naples Budding Readers Program is coordinated by Judy Kaminski, retired kindergarten teacher from Naples. The Big Green Boy’s Basketball completed their season with a 18-0 record(The first time in 55 years!). This marks the 3rd time in Naples School History. In 1949 &1960 the Big Green also went undefeated with athletes from these teams now a part of the Naples Athletic Hall of Fame. Dane Hoselton: set a new school record in IM, and the backstroke Section 5 Class D meet record and qualified for states.

March is Music In Our Schools Month Submitted by Julie Austin

Each year the Elementary school participates in a school-wide celebration based around a central theme. This year the theme is “Music From Around the World!” For the month of 3rd Grade Ukulele Players March students will be exposed to various music from Africa, Asia, India and South America, with lessons on listening, exposure to instruments and dance from other cultures and how music is valued and used in other parts of the world. March 12 is our Music In Our Schools Month Elementary Band and Chorus concert, featuring music from several countries and singing in multiple languages! The concert is at 7:00 PM in the Elementary School Gymnasium. Please join us!
