Filmas „Kartą XX amžiuje“ sukurtas naudojant Lietuvos televizijos archyvinę medžiagą, kurioje užfiksuotas Lenino paminklo nukėlimas Lukiškių aikštėje. Sovietinės epochos pabaigoje iš viešųjų erdvių buvo pašalinta daugybė komunistinių veikėjų skulptūrų – taip išreikštas perėjimas į naujus laikus. Virš džiūgaujančios minios Vilniuje kabančios Lenino skulptūros vaizdas tūkstančius kartų buvo pakartotas visame pasaulyje ir tapo Sovietų Sąjungos žlugimo simboliu. Bet režisierius šiuos kadrus filme parodo atvirkštine tvarka ir sukuria įspūdį, jog Lenino statula pastatoma publikai plojant. Filme tiriamas asmenybės ir ideologinės simbolikos kultas, kuris, turėjęs pasibaigti prieš dešimtmečius, tebėra aktualus ir šiandien. The film “Once in the 20th Century” is based on Lithuanian television footage documenting the dismantling of the Lenin monument in Vilnius’ city square. At the end of the Soviet era, many sculptures of the former political leaders were removed from public spaces to mark the transition to the new era. The images of Lenin’s figure hanging above the cheering crowd in Vilnius has been shown thousands of times over by television stations worldwide as a symbol of the decay of the Soviet Union. But the director shows the shots in the reverse order to create the impression of the Lenin’s statue being erected with the applauding audience. The film examines the cult of personality and ideological symbols, which should have ended decades ago, but still re-emerge in the present.
