JUNE 2017 The development of yoga can be traced back to India more than 5,000 years ago. The first mention of the word ‘yoga’ is found in ‘Rig Veda’, a sacred ancient text containing Sanskrit hymns and verses relating to Sanatana Dharma now popularly called as ‘Hinduism’. Experts credit the origin and practice of yoga to the Indus valley civilization, which is regarded as the most sophisticated and matured ancient civilization in the world. These texts were used by the Vedic priests, also known as Brahmans, and they had songs, rituals, and other mantras. During this time, the Brahmans and the Rishis, also known as mystic seers, were developing and refining yoga as we know it today. They documented their beliefs and practices in the Upanishads which was an ancient work that had more than 200 scriptures in it. One of the most well known of these scriptures was made around approximately 500 B.C.E. and is the Bhagavad-Gîtâ. This scripture talks about sacrificing the ego through wisdom (jnana yoga), self-knowledge, and action (karma yoga). The Classical Period (500 BCE - 800 AD) witnessed the elaboration and rendering of physical postures (asanaas) to yoga philosophy. The ‘Yoga Sutra’ of Sage Patanjali, now known as ‘father of yoga’, delves on the Eight Limbs of Yoga or the Ashtanga Yoga outlining the significance of inner restrain, outer action, physical postures, breathing techniques, withdrawal of senses, focus, meditation, and oneness.

Practice and Benefits of Yoga

Did you know that June 21 is International Yoga Day and a grandiose Yoga Marathon with 10,000 participants will be held at Khreshchatyk Street on Sunday June 18 starting 8 a.m.? Therefore, in this article, we have decided to give you a holistic understanding of what yoga is all about so you may consider it as a means to awakening the serene self or finding the elusive inner peace; or you may have been inspired by the super-toned body of the yoga enthusiasts whom you voyeuristically follow on the Instagram or simply have no choice

but compelled to keep company of a yogi partner or friend. Regardless of your reasons to pursue yoga, we promise that after reading this article, you will be a more enlightened individual!

MEANING AND ORIGINS OF YOGA So what is yoga really? The word ‘yoga’ means ‘union’ with its ultimate goal of acquiring freedom from worldly suffering and to experience full body and mind integration through mental and physical exercises. Yoga, in general, is sectioned into three parts, breathing, exercise, and meditation. Breath is seen as the source of

It is only during the Post-Classical Period (800 AD -1700AD) that there is a greater emphasis on physical postures or asanaas. It is during this period the yogis explored the potential of physical body or the ‘matter’ that was the temple of ‘spirit’. They attempted to energize and strengthen the physical body through asanaas to prolong its life as a holder of the immortal ‘spirit’. This saw the advent of Hatha Yoga that expounded postural practices. Alongside emerged several other forms of yoga. Following this, in the Modern Period (1700 AD -1900) fuelled by the prominence of gurus such as Ramana Maharishi, Ramakrishna Paramhamsa and Swami Vivekananda, yoga gained reputation as a discipline for health, vitality and spirituality. It is during this period that the West’s penchant with the exotic East discovered yoga and fell in love with the practice. A great deal of literature exploring the mysticism of the ancient philosophy and practice of yoga emerged.

YOGA BENEFITS Today Yoga has caught on, spreading all over the world as a practice for good mental and physical health. Now we have several schools of yoga catering to the needs of enthusiasts from diverse age group, culture, and interest. The popularity of yoga is attributed to the plentiful mental and physical benefits that among others include: • Overall Wellness - the combined practice of meditation, breathing, and physical exercises ensures holistic health that covers all aspects of your life – be it professional or personal. On the flip side, you may have to fake sickness to take a break from work J • Energy and Vitality: The practice of yoga infuses you with positive energy and enthusiasm. Like your phone’s power bank, yoga empowers you with a power backup that never lets you feel drained. • Inner Peace: You don’t need to visit the Himalayas or attend spiritual retreats to awaken the inner peace; anytime, anywhere you can switch to your Zen mode with the help of yoga. • Stress Buster: stress triggers are plentiful in our modern life, not just boss and spouse cause stress but events as mundane as a few minutes of broadband outage or a broken water pipe can flareup the stress. Regular practice of yoga just for a few minutes can calm your mind.

• Weight Management - the top priority of the calorie counting generation. With regular practice, yoga not only helps you burn calories but also instils sensible eating habits and controls food intake.

life to your body, and meditation helps you achieve inner happiness. Exercise is also very important in yoga because the body is seen as your instrument that lets us live, move, and make a difference in the world.

• Improved Health - The systematic stretching of yoga postures releases muscular tension, helps increase circulation, enhances digestion and helps eliminate toxins more efficiently.

Each of these aspects of yoga is equally important, and one cannot be done without the others. The constant desire of humans for longer lives, better health, and overall happiness created the yoga practices that we see today. What’s amazing about yoga is that since it is passed down from teacher to student, everything that makes up yoga today is a collection of experiences of individuals from thousands of years ago to now. www.kievcheckin.com

Later the great teachings of Mahavir (Pancha Mahavrata or five great vows) and Gauthama Buddha (Ashtanga Marga or eight fold paths) also contain references to the philosophy of yoga.

• Improved relationships: The regular practice of yoga makes a person have a balanced view of life. The person eventually exudes awareness, understanding, and positivity that improve relationships. Often times you will find yourself playing the ‘agony aunt’ for your friends and relatives.

INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY

Many people who practice yoga do not know the history of this unique art form and only think of it as an exercise found in their local workout studios. However, knowing the history of yoga can help further an individual’s exploration of full body integration, mind, body, and soul.

CULTURE & TRADITIONS

• Improved Fitness - Pairing a yoga routine with an activity that gets your heart pumping (such as running, walking or biking) will improve your overall level of fitness. Many competitive athletes incorporate yoga into their workout programs to take advantage of the flexibility training, which among other benefits, helps reduce the risk of injury. www.kievcheckin.com

fused thermostatic environment reverberating with calming music, or a scenic idyllic nature spot where people with svelte and lithe physique or muscular and well toned bodies dressed in loose comfortable linen outfit or figure hugging lycra suits, manoeuvring their limbs and torso into complex contortions at the crack of dawn or at the fall of dusk... Let me stop you right there. This is absolutely not necessarily!!! These are luxuries without which you are just as fine as any regular yogi to enjoy the bliss of yoga. Even in the midst of your cluttered cubicle, while wearing your snazzy outfit and sporting a double chin and potbelly you can still get into a quick and simple yoga pose or just do pranayama to convey yourself to an idyllic state. Whether you are an exhausted mother, busy executive, stressed boss, fatigued sportsperson or a person recuperating from illness or injury, you do not need all that ninety minutes to experience the wholesome goodness. Just about everyone can benefit from the yoga practice. Yoga is noncompetitive and easily adapted to different ability levels. If you haven’t exercised for a while, yoga can be appealing because it emphasizes the quality rather than the quantity of movement. Yoga classes can be a great way to get started with yoga the right way. If you’re not aware of bad postural habits, a video or book will only reinforce them. A teacher will tune into these habits and help change them. Consider the type of yoga being taught: if a morning class fits into your schedule but it’s a rigorous style, you may be unlikely to continue if you’re looking at yoga as a chance to relax and meditate. Yoga is a lot like music; there’s jazz, classical, rock and so on, you need to find the one that resonates with you.

CULTURE LOST & TRADITIONS IN UKRAINE

SPINAL TWIST/ MATSYENDRASANA

CORPSE POSE / SAVASANA

This can be done seated on a chair sideways. It is helpful in stretching and relaxing the spine.

For this you have to lie down, so you may need your own private space. It can be done before going to bed and it is immensely helpful in relaxing and calming your mind.

This exercise improves balance and strengthens the leg muscles and tones the glutes. This can be done while waiting for the water in the kettle to boil or inside an elevator. Stand with your feet together, inner ankles and inner knees touching. Bring the palms of your hands together at the center of the chest. Exhale, steady your feet and firm up your balance while shifting your weight to your right foot. Lift your left leg and place the sole of the left foot on the inner thigh of the right leg. Lengthen your spine, lift up your chest, straighten your shoulders and tighten your stomach and stand tall and look up in front. Maintain the pose for a minute or more and repeat for the other leg.

Sit sideways on the chair, facing to the left. Twist your torso toward the left, holding onto the back of the chair. Lengthen your spine on each inhale and twist on each exhale for five breaths. Move your legs around to the right side of the chair and repeat the twist to the right side.

BOAT POSE/ NAVASANA This helps to build a strong core. Before you spring up from your bed in the morning or just before you shut your eyes for the day.

Lie down on the floor, stretch out your arms and legs and close your eyes and relax and focus on breathing for three to five minutes.

PIGEON POSE/ KAPOTASANA

Lie down in the supine position, legs stretched out, toes facing the ceiling, and palms resting on either side of your body facing the ground. Inhale deeply, as you exhale, lift your torso and legs from the ground with your arms lifted and stretched parallel to the floor with fingers in line with toes. Focus on your breathing and feel the stomach muscle contracting. Breathing normally, hold the posture for a minute. Slowly relax and come back to the supine position.

Again can be done at the comfort of your chair and it helps in relaxing the hips and pelvic region. Sit straight on a chair, then bring your right ankle to rest on your left thigh, keeping the knee in line with your ankle as much as possible. Hold the position for five breaths. Repeat the opposite side by bringing your left ankle up to rest on your right thigh. Lean forward for a good stretch.

YOGA ON THE GO While taking yoga classes is a great option, we also encourage you to fit yoga into your daily routine. What you essentially need is the desire and commitment. Eventually, your efforts will payoff and it will become a natural ritual that will find its own time and space in your routine. Make sure that you squeeze your yoga quickies discreetly without invading the space and peace of others at office or public spots. Your earnest quest for peace may get you branded as a weirdo. At home, issue sufficient “Do not attempt to duplicate, re-create, or perform the same or similar stunts and tricks” disclaimer/ warnings to your toddlers.

FINAL WORD How much and how long you practice is a personal decision, but to improve flexibility and to tone your muscles, you’ll need to do yoga on a regular basis. For starters, try practicing at least three times a week. Ask yourself what your intentions are as they formulate your experience, so if you can focus on what you want, you’ll get it.

Here are some of the yoga quickies that you can fit into your busy routine anywhere and anytime:

“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” - Mahatma Gandhi

As a nation, Ukrainians are curious, always ready to learn something unusual and surrender completely to new experiences and impressions. Some who practice yoga are tempted by its miraculous potential to heal disease, while others like its more philosophical aspect. Still, others practice yoga just to follow a booming trend. However, the main reason yoga has prospered here is that Ukrainians are busy, hard-working people who need to tear themselves away physically and mentally from work and their daily routines to take an all-too-important pause for their well-being.

to Feel the Summer Breeze in Kiev The temperature is 25 degrees, the sun is shining brightly and the sky is completely blue. What does all this mean? Finally, summer has come, a season full of delights and exciting events to look forward to! Take your sunglasses and a bottle of water and join me for a stroll around the city. Here are my favorite routes to enjoy perfect harmony of magnificent architecture and spectacular nature perfectly combined in Kiev.

POSTAL SQUARE AND DNIPRO QUAY As it’s hot enough in June, let’s start our walk not far from the river, in order to completely enjoy the experience. Both Ukrainians and tourists like to start their walk along the quay from Postal Square, considered one of the loveliest places in Kiev to take a rest. There’s an additional way to get

here, via Saint Volodymyr Descent, through the newly-built observation deck, which gives you the chance to extend your walk along Dnipro Quay. In the center of the Postal square, there’s a wonderful multi-coloured fountain which attracts much attention, especially in the

evening. You’ll see many children and even some brave adults splashing water and playing in the fountain’s cooling jets during the day. The River Boat Station is also here in Postal Square. Dnipro Quay is one of the best locations for photo shoots – the natural environment and the nearby buildings combine to create a stunning backdrop. After your walk, enjoy views on the Dnieper river from one of outdoor cafes or restaurants, conveniently located there.

If you turn right from Postal Square you’ll reach the Parkovy, or as it’s also called, the Pedestrian Bridge. It’s a light construction, 400 m long, connecting Kiev to the park area of Trukhaniv Island. This is the only bridge constructed specifically for pedestrian traffic over the Dnipro. If you are daring enough, try bungee jumping from this bridge and experience a huge adrenaline rush! Having crossed the bridge, you arrive at Trukhaniv Island which is just perfect destination for active leisure activities! First of all, it’s a great landscape for riding a bicycle,

Landscape Alley is one of the most unusual places in Kiev, thanks to its talented and imaginative creators. In one minute from the National Museum of History of Ukraine you will turn out in a fabulous alley with amazing benches made in the form of a cat, birds and rabbits, fountains with zebras and elephants, and sculptures of famous cartoon heroes! All the exhibits are made of mosaic, which makes the alley more colorful and exceptional... A cat-centipede, 30 metres long, is the most popular among keen

photographers. Nowadays, this area is protected by UNESCO and is part of the reserve known as Ancient Kiev. Landscape Alley is a must-visit place with children or even without. It will remind you of your own childhood and cheer you up. On the one hand, visitors are treated to a panoramic view of Podil and Castle Hill (Zamkova Hora). OBOLON QUAY Obolon Quay is one of the most romantic places of Kiev being very popular with Kiev residents, especially couples who come here for a romantic walk near the riverside… Among Kiev residents, Obolon Quay is unofficially called “Kiev Europe”, because of the great variety of upmarket restaurants, cafes and bars with wonderful outdoor terraces. In the evening, it can seem as if you are somewhere in Turkey, and after a few cocktails you could even imagine you’re in the heart of Spain! The whole quay is pedestrian, so you can wander at will, enjoying the fresh breeze blowing across from the bay and numerous remarkable sculptures of ancient Greek heroes, located all along the embankment. During daytime it is also a great place for roller skating, fishing, playing with your children, a walk with pets or just relaxing in the sun. In summer it’s a popular place for sunbathing and swimming, as the shoreline along

What else is there to see? Well, there’s a beautiful Church of the Nativity near the quay, playgrounds, a private golf club and countless other attractions to seek out. In short, Obolon Quay is well worth a visit. As people

How to get there: walk from Minska or Obolon metro station (Blue line), through Heroiv Stalingrada Prospect in the courtyards. Your landmark is the Church of the Nativity.

RUSANIVKA QUAY AND NAVODNITSKII PARK If you’re weary of the concrete walls of the big city, Rusanivka Quay is an ideal place to find refuge from the hustle and bustle and gather your thoughts. Located on the left bank of the Dnipro river, Rusanivka Quay offers you magnificent views of the Motherland Monument, Kiev Pechersk Lavra and the right bank of our city itself, so it’s no secret that Rusanivka Quay is the best spot in Kiev to watch the sun go down, especially in summer. The green space with plenty of benches, playgrounds and places to take part in sporting activities, it is perfect for picnics and family events. Pick up a pizza and enjoy eating it al fresco! Or if you prefer spending some time in a bar, a cafe or a restaurant, there are plenty to choose from along the quay and on the opposite street...

An absolute must-see at Rusanivka Quay is the astonishing array of 15 geyser fountains along the waterfront. In the evening, soaring jets of water are illuminated by lanterns. This enchanting spectacle has become a main attraction in this residential area and in our capital in general, a huge draw for locals and visitors alike. The fountains start functioning from May and operate until the middle of autumn. Also don’t miss here a monument in honor of the Russian writer of Ukrainian origin, Mykola Gogol, a sculpture, called “Stairs”, and other unique artworks. If you come to Kiev, take just an hour of your time to discover our city from the other side. Places like this will make you feel completely part of Kiev. Not far from Rusanivka Quay there is yet another popular place – Navodnitskii Park, which provides a truly spectacular setting...

HYDROPARK How can we imagine summer without a trip to the beach? If you would like to feel as if you’re at the seaside, pay a visit to Hydropark... Conveniently located on the banks of the Dnipro river, it will offer you all you need to cater for your relaxation needs. It’s a vast landscaped area with tennis courts, ping-pong tables, swimming pools, the open-air free gym fully sponsored by sports enthusiasts, cafes, restaurants, discos, and even amusement park! You are welcome to relax in one of numerous clean beaches or even rent a boat, a catamaran or a water scooter here.

30 minutes to explore all the exhibits, with about 60 models, all made by hand! The park covers an area of 1.6 hectares with all the exhibits are faithful renditions of the original locations.

At some moments you’ll really feel that you are near the sea, and this illusion will bring a gentle sense of harmony inside. The Kiev Sea is one of the six reservoirs in cascade on the Dnipro river within the Kiev and Chernihiv regions, created with a dam by the Kiev hydroelectric station. An interesting fact is that a stage of the Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship has been held in the area of the Kiev Sea in 2011.

Some of the powerboats achieved a speed of more than 200 km/h. Today, there are also convenient tracks for cycling beside the sea, and scenic spots for picnics.

When it’s hot and you’re longing to go somewhere for a swim, take a stroll in the fresh air, or just eat a shish kebab by the water, Hydropark is one of the best solutions in the city. How to get there: from Hydropark metro station (Red line).

THE KIEV SEA You can walk here along shady pathways, admire the views of the Dnipro river, examine unique plants and take pictures of famous monuments. One of them is the symbol of our capital – the monument in honor of Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv and their sister Lybid, shown in a bronze boat – the founders of Kiev, according to legend. Navodnitskii Park is a traditional place to visit for all newly-weds to take photos and throw bouquets for luck. Once you are here, don’t miss opportunity to dine at one of the numerous floating restaurants, made in the shape of old sailboats, just down from the park, perfect for unwinding and resting after your walk.

If you’re a sea-lover, but can’t afford to take a break at the moment, we have our own Kiev Sea not far from the city. It’s not the type of the sea with sun loungers and girls in bikinis, though. The area is tranquil, but with a touch of the wild, and very inspirational. Swimming is forbidden, but it seems that this place was never destined for swimming, more for standing and staring, listening to nature and to your inner self.

LOST IN UKRAINE

JUNE 2017 ment of homing heads. Joint development of air-to-air missiles has significant potential and is generating great interest from our Indian partners.

Education

There’s a huge market heading your way...

INDIA IN UKRAINE Which country is famous for Bollywood movies, dazzling dances and colorful Holi festivals, invented yoga, chess, geometry and algebra and is the second most populous state in the world? Where can you find an extremely rich culture, traditions in which all religions are recognized and peacefully co-exist, and at the same time one of the fastest-growing economies on the planet? India, of course. Today this country has the eyes of the whole world on it. Here in Ukraine, we’re fascinated by India too! So why this fast-growing relationship? Well, for a start, Ukraine and India have a great deal in common. Both are peaceand freedom-loving nations that fought for independence for a very long time. In 2017, India and Ukraine mark their 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 70th anniversary of India’s independence. Today our two countries cooperate successfully throughout economic, political, scientific and technical, defence and cultural areas, and enjoy warm and friendly relations. There are around 35 Indian companies represented in Ukraine. In 2016, exports to India rose by 132 percent and imports by 110 percent when compared with 2015. This has resulted in a positive trade balance of 1417 million USD. The most prominent areas of partnership between Ukraine and India are:

Medicine The pharmaceutical sector accounts for 30 percent of Indian exports to Ukraine. Indian pharmaceutical products have excellent benefits for Ukraine: they’re high quality but cost relatively little when compared with similar European products. Today, regional offices for around 15 Indian medical companies, such as Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Ranbaxy have been set up in Ukraine, together establish-

ing the Indian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association in our country (IPMA). This organisation helps representatives of Indian pharmaceutical manufacturers with their activity in Ukraine, creating an accurate insight as to the international quality, achievements and potential of the Indian pharmaceutical industry.

Agriculture There’s significant potential for cooperation between Ukraine and India within the agricultural sector, with opportunities for expanding this huge market and providing tremendous prospects for trade. India’s population is growing by around 15 million per year. If we can capture just 1 percent of the total Indian market, our target audience will be 13.4 million people! Ukraine’s fertile land and mild climate have genuine potential to help India solve its serious hunger problem. As a country where 40-80 percent of people are vegetarian, India is extremely interested in our bean cultures and grain crops, and it’s a major buyer of Ukrainian sunflower oil. By 2016, India had become the largest buyer of Ukrainian wheat in the world, importing approximately 1.5 million tons. This is closely related to the reduction of import duties on wheat from 25 percent to 10 percent, at the beginning of the

Nowadays, cooperation between the two countries for Indian specialists studying at Ukrainian universities is one of the key directions for bilateral relations. Ten percent of all international students in Ukraine are from India. Most study in the medical field as being a doctor in India is not only prestigious, but also profitable. The average doctor’s salary varies there from two to five thousand dollars per month, depending on the specialization. However, due to the massive demand for medical education, the cost of studying is often beyond the means of Indian families (it can cost between 10 and 15 thousand USD per year), forcing Indian students to enrol at foreign universities. Between 2000 and 2010 the number of Indian students enrolled in universities outside their own country rose from 2 million to 3.6 million. Ukraine, with its high quality education system introduced in accordance with the Bologna process, its attractive location in Eastern Europe, and cheaper course fees, at around 2.5 thousand USD per year, is a wise choice for Indian students.

BUSINESS CORNER

Still, cooperation in this area could be much more effective. Since around 40 percent of the Indian population is below 35 and another million people turn 18 every month, India could open up a huge market for Ukrainian universities.

Culture Currently, Ukraine-India cultural exchange is on the rise. This is strongly supported by the Indian Embassy in Ukraine (www.embassyofindiaukraine.in), which regularly organizes opulent celebrations of Indian holidays and festivals such as Diwali, the breathtaking Hindu festival of lights, and actively promotes Indian culture and values among Ukrainians. The Indian Ambassador, H.E. Manoj K. Bharti, often delivers lectures to Ukrainian students about his homeland: its diverse culture, rich history and future prospects for collaboration with Ukraine. And what’s more, there’s even an India Club, founded by a few Indian expats in 2001 and intended to encourage cultural and social interaction among its members and all Ukrainians with an enthusiasm for Indian culture and heritage. More and more people in Ukraine dream of visiting India in the hope of finding inspiration and a path to enlightened living. In Ukraine there are now more than 10 schools of Indian dance and a growing number of prestigious Indian restaurants,

including such famous places as Himalaya, Sutra, and New Bombay Palace.

Tourism Doubtless, collaboration in terms of tourism plays an important role for both countries. However, at a time when more than 20 million foreigners come to visit Ukraine every year, the share of Indian tourists among them remains quite small (only 9274 people in 2014). The main reasons for this are the lack of an effective Ukrainian promotional campaign, the absence of direct transport connections between the two countries, and visa issues. In order to strengthen bilateral ties, Ukraine has recently simplified the visa procedure for Indian travelers. So from April 17, 2017, Indian businessmen and tourists can obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) for trips lasting up to 15 days. We anticipate that many more tourists from India will visit Ukraine this year. Despite excellent potential, the current level of collaboration between countries doesn’t correspond to the amazing opportunities open to us. Both sides want to increase international cooperation and agree that it should be expanded. India offers us a huge market. The question is: are we ready to make the most of this huge potential for future India-Ukraine collaboration?

crop harvesting season. It should be noted that India has quite high standards for agricultural products, while Ukraine faces increased competition from Russia, which also targets the Indian market.

Metallurgy and Machinery For many years now, India has imported a considerable amount of base metals, including ferrous metals, composing about 49 percent of total Ukrainian metal exports. As for machinery, special attention should be paid to military-technical cooperation and partnership in aircraft engineering between our countries. Ukraine signed 15 memorandums during one of the world’s largest international expos of land and naval weapons, DefExpo, which took place in South Goa in 2016. Among these were memoranda on the joint development of multipurpose military transport aircraft, AN, fulfilling the needs of the Indian Air Force, and for civilian purposes, an agreement on long-term cooperation to supply gas turbines, made by Zorya-Mashproekt in Mykolaiv, and on their further installation as part of Indian naval forces equipment. Industrial cooperation projects are happening in the fields of aeronautics, the production of radar and maritime surveillance equipment, the modernization of armored vehicles, air defense systems, aircraft, and the developwww.kievcheckin.com

deep state of meditation. The word “Yoga” is Sanskrit for “combining”. Yoga combines the physical aspect of the body with the mental element of the mind. There’s a famous proverb in Sanskrit, “yoga chitta vritti nirodha” which means that the purpose of yoga is to control a wandering mind. If the mind is focused and the body toned up through exercises (asanas), people experience peace, harmony and a total sense of well-being. Illness is reduced and can be self-corrected through yoga practice. I’d emphasise that prevalent notions of yoga as just a form of exercise are completely misleading. Whatever form of yoga is practiced, unless there’s an element of complete mental focus, the practice is not really yoga. My favourite aspect of yoga is a breathing exercise,“Pranayam”.

HE MANOJ K. BHARTI -

Ambassador of India in Ukraine

4

On the occasion of International Yoga Day, Kiev Check-in arranged an interview with HE Manoj K. Bharti - Ambassador of India to Ukraine since September 2015. Prior to arriving in Ukraine, he served as India’s Ambassador to Belarus, worked at the Indian Embassies in Tehran, the Hague, Kathmandu, Ankara and Yangon. The ambassador was a charming and informative interviewee, telling us about the growing popularity of yoga worldwide, the development of the India-Ukraine relationship, the benefits of visa simplification and new travel opportunities, and much more.

1

HE Manoj K. Bharti, thank you for taking the time to talk with Kiev Check-in magazine. First, can you share with us your initial reactions and impressions from when you were appointed Ambassador to Ukraine?

I came to Ukraine from Belarus and already knew a great deal about your country. Then when I took on my role here and saw everything with my own eyes, I found Ukraine far more beautiful than I’d imagined. To begin with, the attitude of Ukrainians towards India and its people is exceptionally friendly. The Ukrainian people are genuinely interested in Indian culture and philosophy. I’ve also discovered that Ukraine really is the food basket of Europe. In terms of territory, it’s the largest European country and forty million highly educated people live here. So I was very happy and enthusiastic about working here as Ambassador of India.

This interview coincides with International Yoga Day on June 21, 2017. For the past few years the Indian government has been very active in organizing promotional activities worldwide in honor of Yoga Day. Is the Indian Embassy in Ukraine planning any special activities to mark the occasion this year?

In September 2014, the Indian government tabled a resolution at the United Nations to mark 21 June every year as the International Day of Yoga (IDY). Much to our surprise, the proposal was supported by 177 countries, a UN record. By December 2014, the UN had passed this resolution unanimously. The very short time between tabling the resolution and its passing was another UN record. Since then, IDY has been observed in almost every country in the world, mostly supported by Indian embassies in global capitals. The scale of the celebration increases year on year. This year will be the 3rd IDY, and it goes from strength to strength. In Kiev, a Yoga Marathon is planned for 18 June at Khreshchatyk.

JUNE 2017

We intend to set a new record: 10,000 people all doing yoga together. The event starts at 8 a.m. with a formal inauguration, then a 50 minute yoga session will be followed by a short Indian cultural performance. On 21 June a yoga fair, the Yoga Mela, will be held at Mariyinsky Park between 4 and 9 p.m.. Stalls for various yoga groups, along with others promoting a range of Indian customs and traditions such as Ayurveda, vegetarian food, Henna painting and other enticing activities will be set up and a folk dance performance from a visiting Indian troupe and other cultural performances will take place at the outdoor Rakushka summer stage.

3

How is yoga connected with India, and what are the benefits it offers for the overall well-being of an individual? What’s your favorite yoga exercise?

Yoga is deeply connected to ancient Indian philosophy and culture. One of the main pillars of Indian philosophy is the practice of meditation, to attain the spiritual growth of the human soul. Yoga is a way of preparing both the body and the mind to achieve a www.kievcheckin.com

How close is the business and cultural relationship between Ukraine and India?

The relationship between India and Ukraine has been developing for a long time. There’s deep understanding of India, Indian culture and its traditions in Ukraine. Since independence from the former USSR our ties have become even closer. Very few people realize that bilateral trade between India and Ukraine is as high as $2.35 billion, making India the seventh largest trading partner for Ukraine. More importantly, Ukraine exports almost $1.95 billion worth of goods to India, so India is the sixth largest export destination for Ukraine.

5

What initiatives exist to promote trade between Ukraine and India? How is the Indian Embassy promoting trade and investment between our countries?

As well as long-established connections in defence-related industries, there are new niche areas under discussion with the Ukraine government to enhance our economic and trade relationship. These include exporting pulses from Ukraine to India. India imports around $2 billion worth of pulses every year and Ukraine could supply much of this. And taking advantage of the excellent educational facilities in Ukraine by bringing in Indian students has already begun. There are almost 8,000 Indian students studying here, generating more than $40 million for the Ukrainian economy. This could increase to $150 million if improvements can be made to attract the best students, by offering them a high quality education and comfortable accommodation at Ukrainian universities. Corruption-free administration is also vital. The Indian Embassy is working with the government of Ukraine to promote www.kievcheckin.com

Indian tourism. Extending the Visa on Arrival facility to Indian nationals is a welcome step and should result very soon in an influx of Indian visitors, contributing $30 million to Ukraine’s tourism industry.

6

What opportunities exist for Ukrainian businesses wanting to explore the Indian market? Do you have any tips for Indian businesses interested in Ukraine?

Some new spheres of economic cooperation between our countries have already started since 2016. Blood products produced in Ukraine have a great potential market in India. The Ukrainian company Biopharma has visited India to discuss this and are enthused by the demand for their products in India. I’ve already mentioned the export of pulses from Ukraine to India. Pharmaceuticals are of immense potential for export from India to Ukraine. In 2016, Indian pharmaceutical products worth USD 135 million were imported to Ukraine from India. But there’s a need to increase this significantly. Importing pharmaceutical products from India is a huge advantage for the Ukrainian budget, because for every $100 of pharmaceutical products imported from India, Ukraine saves around $300 on the cost of similar products from Europe or America. There’s a need to streamline procedures to facilitate the import of high quality, certified pharmaceutical products from India to Ukraine.

7

What’s the current state of cultural, educational, and tourism ties between the two countries? What growth do you predict in this area in the coming years? Are there any special initiatives to strengthen these links?

There’s huge interaction between Indian people and Ukraine. More than 20,000 Ukrainian tourists visit India every year and are highly aware of Indian culture and traditions. This is clear from the large number of yoga classes taking place in many cities here. Schools are now teaching Indian classical, folk and modern dance classes. Recently an Indian dance festival was organized in Kiev, with around 350 artists and children participating. The government of India offers 25 ITEC scholarships for professional Ukrainians in 65 different areas, including English language, IT training, audit and finance, and leadership training. Details of these courses and application forms can

be found on the Indian Embassy’s website: embassyofindiaukraine.in. The Indian government also provides annual scholarships for learning Indian classical dance, music, Ayurveda and Hindi. Information about all these initiatives can be accessed on the website.

8

How can Ukraine attract more tourists from India?

The most important requirement has already been met, now that Indian nationals are allowed to visit Ukraine using the Visa on Arrival facility. The next step to attract more Indian tourists is to promote the shooting of Indian films here. Once the country is seen on film, huge numbers of Indians will want to come to this extraordinary land to see it for themselves. The Embassy of India is constantly working to promote Ukraine as an ideal destination for film shoots. One Indian film has already been shot in Lviv and Kiev, in November and December 2016, and six new projects are in the pipeline. The Ukraine government could take further innovative steps to lure Indian film producers here, such as concessional tariffs and easier permission processes.

9

Tell us about your favorite place in Kiev. What do you like most and least in the city?

Kiev is a stunning city, so there are many places to enjoy. The Botanical Gardens in spring is a particularly wonderful sight. The vast expanse of the Open-Air Museum of National Architecture, Pyrogovo, is another favorite of mine. I love the views from the footbridge over the Dnipro River, the Friendship Arch, the Mother Ukraine Statue, Trukhaniv Island and Kiev Pechersk Lavra. There are countless other places I could choose as my favorite. What I don’t like so much in Kiev is city walls covered in mindless graffiti.

10

Do you have a special message for the Indian community in Ukraine?

Though the Indian community here is small, they play a very important role in spreading the message about Indian customs and traditions. I congratulate the Indian community for being responsible citizens in Ukraine and encourage them to play an even more prominent part in spreading the message about India. All this could be summed up by a well-known Sanskrit proverb, “ ” . It means “the entire world is one family”.

BUSINESS CORNER

DOING BUSINESS IN UKRAINE -

• Both work permit and temporary residence permit applications are subject to review and approval by government authorities. However, under valid grounds, there should be no problem with the approval process.

Tips for Foreigners Following the recent reforms and closer ties with West, Ukraine is gradually becoming an attractive, albeit still difficult, place to do business and invest for the foreign business community. Regardless of the still weak political, legal, and financial climate in the country, Ukraine has an excellent geographic location, the largest territory in Europe, rich natural resources, and a low cost but skilled workforce. Ukraine’s confusing regulatory regime, ever-changing regulations and significant red tape can cost foreign investors significant money and time. In our experience, every day we encounter front-facing government staff, bank representatives, private consultants, and notaries who are not aware of the latest changes and provide incorrect information. But these challenges are by no means insurmountable, the savvy entrepreneur can easily find his/her way past to make some great investments. Here’s a list of business tips for any foreign individual exploring doing business or investing in Ukraine. Note that law and regulations change frequently, therefore always consult for the latest updates before making any decisions!

PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNTS As a foreign national (resident or non-resident), you are allowed to open the following types of personal bank accounts in Ukraine: • Regular current and savings accounts in the local currency UAH and selected foreign currencies. • An Investment Account that allows foreigners to make investments into Ukraine and subsequently repatriate profits and capital out of the country. Keep the following points in mind when opening and operating your bank account in Ukraine: • Rules for bank accounts vary depending on the type and are strictly regulated by Ukrainian Banking law. For example, you are not allowed to withdraw cash from your investment bank account (whereas it is possible from a regular current bank account). Therefore, use the type of

• You can use your debit card (linked to your regular current account) when making purchases overseas as well as withdraw cash, subject to certain limits.

STARTING A COMPANY While there are a number of different business structures available in Ukraine, the most suitable limited liability structure for a small- to mid-sized business in Ukraine is a Limited Liability Company (LLC). Both resident and non-resident foreigners are free to incorporate a LLC and can be 100% shareholders of the company. Points to note when opening a LLC: • The process of incorporating a company is fairly straightforward and can be completed in 1-2 working days after all the necessary documents are ready.

WORK AND RESIDENCE PERMITS Work permits and residence permits are two different permits issued to foreigners. With the exception of few situations, both permits are required when relocating to operate or work for a company in Ukraine. Keep in mind the following: • Foreign entrepreneurs who have opened their LLC company in Ukraine will need to apply for both permits if they wish to relocate to Ukraine. The same is true when the LLC is hiring other foreign staff.

• The director of an LLC can be only an individual who has right to reside in Ukraine (a citizen of Ukraine, or a permanent citizen or foreign individual who has obtained a work and residence permit in Ukraine). Corporate directors are not permitted.

• Certain categories of foreign citizens (such as permanent residents of Ukraine, employees of representative offices and permanent establishments of foreign companies, representatives of foreign mass media, professional athletes, artists and some others) do not need to apply for work permits when working in Ukraine (but they still need to obtain residence permits). However, in most other cases, a valid work permit is required before commencing work.

• A Ukrainian company must have a local registered address.

• The processing time for a work permit application is about 1 month.

• Foreign entrepreneurs who wish to relocate to Ukraine to operate their company can apply for relocation visa (work permit & residence permit), which is subject to approval by authorities.

• After the work permit application has been approved, the permit holder must obtain a temporary residence permit if he/she plans to relocate to Ukraine to work. Family members are also eligible to obtain the temporary residence permit.

It’s important to work with a knowledgeable and competent corporate services

• Obtaining a residence permit takes up to 15 days upon application.

• Prior to registration of an LLC, foreign shareholders need to obtain a Ukrainian tax number.

TAXES Tax rate in Ukraine depends on the type of taxpayer and her income. The base tax rates are listed below: • Corporate tax rate: 18%

bank account that corresponds to your planned purpose and transactions. • While you are free to deposit money into these accounts from overseas and bonafide local payments, cash withdrawals in foreign currency as well as overseas transfers are subject to certain limits at present (depending on types of bank account and transaction). These restrictions are a result of the currency controls imposed by the government mainly because of the political and economic crisis that started in 2013 and still lingers today. They apply both to businesses as well as individuals, although the specific rules may vary.

Due to attractive prices in the current Ukrainian real-estate market, foreign investors are increasingly interested in purchasing residential property here. However, the real-estate market in Ukraine is not very mature and therefore often fraught with significant difficulties and risks at almost every step of the transaction. It’s extremely important to work with a knowledgeable and trustworthy legal advisor when dealing with real-estate in Ukraine. Here are some basic guidelines: • It is important to perform the deal and payment strictly in accordance with Ukrainian Civil, Banking and Investment law to avoid future difficulties with repatriation of investments and investment income. • Proper due diligence as well as proper legal planning and examination of real-estate transactions are crucial while investing in real-estate in Ukraine due to risk of fraud. • The commission of real-estate agencies is typically around 3–5% from the real-estate purchase price, payable only if the deal is concluded. Real-estate agencies are not regulated and do not require a license to operate. Therefore, we highly recommend that you also use an independent real-estate legal advisor to assist you with proper advice when concluding your transaction.

• Individual income tax rate: 18% plus 1.5% military tax • Social security tax: 22% (applicable as part of payroll tax) • VAT: 20% • Individuals registered as Private Entrepreneur (similar to Sole Proprietorship in other countries) and listed under the Simplified Tax Scheme (3rd Group): 3–5% Note that the Ukrainian tax code defines specific rates for certain types of income or transactions which can be different from the ones mentioned above. In addition, some types of income/transactions are exempt from taxation. Therefore, to define applicable tax rate for each specific case, it is important to get professional advice.

GETTING A UKRAINIAN TAX NUMBER As a foreigner, if you are planning to work, invest, or start a business in Ukraine, most likely you will need to obtain a Ukrainian tax number. Therefore, it’s usually a good idea to get this done as soon as possible. If you are overseas, the application for tax number can be filed by your representative in Ukraine under a Power of Attorney. The application processing time is about 5 working days.

HIRING STAFF In Ukraine, a company can hire people either under labour agreement (i.e. as a

salaried employee) or under civil services agreement (i.e. as a freelancer, provided the person being hired is registered as a Private Entrepreneur (PE)). If hired as a salaried employee, the company should assume roughly 40% tax overhead on top of the salary in-hand to the employee. On the other hand, in a freelancing arrangement, the salary tax burden is approx. 5%. As a result of this anomaly, many companies tend to reduce their costs by arranging staff as a mix of freelancers and full-time staff. However, such a structure requires careful tax and legal planning in order to avoid getting on the wrong side of the law.

MISTAKES IN DOCUMENTATION This is the last tip we have for you today, but it is certainly not the least! Unfortunately in Ukraine, you will often find that important agreements and documents that are prepared for you may contain misprints and errors. This can be caused by a number of reasons including lack of professional quality controls, lack of use of computer technology and automation or overworked staff. What should you do? A simple solution is to presume that the documents have errors and have them double-checked by your trusted local professional advisor. This article is brought to you by Contact Ukraine LLC - a Kyiv-based boutique firm that provides consulting and professional services to international clients in the areas of business setup, immigration, real-estate investment, taxation, banking, and living in Ukraine. If you need our services, please contact us info@contactukraine.com or visit our website at www.contactukraine.com.

PAYING FOR INVESTMENTS Foreign nationals are allowed to pay for their investments in Ukraine (opening a business, buying real-estate or other type of investment) in two possible ways: • Directly from their account overseas (in this case, payment is made in foreign currency); -or• By opening an investment bank account in Ukraine. In this case, the foreign national must transfer money in foreign currency to the investment account, convert it to local currency hryvna (UAH), and then pay for the investment in the local currency. Note that an investment account is the only type of bank account in Ukraine for foreign individuals that allows them to make settlements for their investments. www.kievcheckin.com
