WHAT’SLOST NEW IN UKRAINE THE CITY

What’s New in the City Our pride: New Miss Ukraine 2017 hails from Kiev The new Miss Ukraine 2017 was chosen from among 24 charming candidates in ceremony at the Palace Ukraine on Sept. 6. Polina Tkach, 18, from Kiev, won the magnificent crown and the right to represent our country at the Miss World 2017 WHAT’S NEW IN THE CITY beauty pageant in China in November. But two other winners were also chosen to represent Ukraine: Diana Mironenko in the Miss Earth pageant, and Xenia Chipa in the Miss International competition. This year’s honorable jury included designer Andre Tan, showman Dmitry Komarov, restaurateur Nikolai Tishchenko, choreographer Alena Shoptenko, ballet dancer Ekaterina Kukhar, and others. The lavish show included performances by famous Ukrainian singers and groups and elaborate scenery including a huge eye and a robotic palm. Contestants in the pageant competed for prizes totaling UAH 700,000. This year’s theme was “Everyone can become Miss Ukraine“, an idea that seems to be borne out by this year’s winner. Polina Tkach is a regular student at the National Aviation University who is fond of exercising her creativity and was brave enough to test her mettle in this year’s pageant.

Ukrainian national football team in 2018 FIFA World Cup selection matches Ukraine’s national football team is in Group 1, along with Turkey, the Republic of Croatia, Finland, the Republic of Kosovo and Iceland, all striving to make it into the playoff round for next year’s World Cup. Ukraine gained a victory on Sept. 2 in a match against Turkey with a 2-0 score, but on Sept. 5 lost to Iceland 0-2. Currently, Ukraine has 14 points and two matches to go, against Kosovo and Croatia. The match with the Croatian team takes place in Ukraine on Oct. 9, but the date and place for the match with Kosovo have yet to be decided. The Ukrainian team doesn’t want to play the match on the Kosovo pitch because of that country’s current instability. According to the preliminary count, the Ukrainian team needs not only to take second place, but also to gain maximum points in the final rounds. If Ukraine wins these two games, it will have a real chance to get into the playoff. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Kiev’s biggest boost in tourists came from foreign visitors (up by 17 percent), an encouraging statistic. Significant changes were observed in the city’s top-five list of foreign visitors. Israel was the top source of foreign tourists in 2016, with 152,000 visitors.

www.kievcheckin.com

The previous and long-term leader, the Russian Federation, fell out of the top five altogether. Taking second place on the list was the Republic of Belarus, with 105,000 visitors, followed by the United States with 99,000, Germany with 85,000, and Turkey with 60,000. The Kiev City State Administration is working to attract more tourists to Ukraine, and it’s hoped the 2017 report will present even better results.

FOREVER YOUNG BBL

FOOD & DRINKS

REPROGRAM THE AGE OF YOUR SKIN!

Skin is in a state of constant turnover, with new cells being created in the deepest layers. This process includes gene expression, which is how a cell receives its genetic code. It’s also a critical part of how skin ages. As more genes associated with aging are activated over time, the structure and appearance of skin change. And there has been no way to change it back… Until now. Introducing Forever Young BBL™ from Sciton - a revolutionary treatment that sends light energy deep into the skin to boost the body’s natural ability to fight aging. Skin doesn’t just look younger—it’s genetically programmed to be younger!

Skin that looks ten years younger! Your DNA is a unique blueprint that is very individual. Certain genes can express themselves (turn on or off) based on factors like aging and other environmental factors. As we get older, the genes within our skin cells are programmed to express themselves differently than they did when we were younger. Forever Young BBL reaches deep into the cell and activates certain genes connected with youth, while turning off other genes tied to aging. As a result, you create more kinds of proteins and other building blocks you had when you were juvenile. New skin cells are actually programmed to be younger, giving you beautiful, fresh skin. It may sound impossible, but that’s what reprogramming of your skin’s age with regular Forever Young BBL treatments can do. It was proven in a 10-year clinical study—one of the longest studies ever to show the results of a skin care regimen. Befor, age 43.

The Kiev Water Museum, also known as the Water Information Center, is as entertaining as it is educational. Situated in the restored 19th-century city water tower, itself a historic site, the museum offers an inside look at Kiev’s water-supply and water-treatment systems. An experienced guide (English and French-speaking guides are available) will tell you about the city’s first water supply system, about the irreversible processes generated by human activity and their influence on the ecology as a whole, and how to use water more efficiently in daily life. A tour of 35 to 40 minutes will introduce you to the planet’s hydrosphere and take you deep into an interactive part of the exhibit. One hall is transformed into a grotto where you can take a virtual journey around the continents, discovering the way water shapes the planet through waterfalls, geyser eruptions and glacial melts. There are many interesting exhibits such as models of water towers and sewage systems, samples of ancient pipes, and a huge toilet bowl half the height of a man. Interactive exhibits give you the opportunity to alter a river bed, provoke lightning and thunder, and stand inside a soap bubble for a while — or blow the bubble yourself (a delightful activity for kids and adults alike).

A huge aquarium stocked with Japanese fish is another popular exhibit, but be careful not to have your fingers bitten off! As the Kiev Water Museum is very popular, at times you may need to wait in line for 10 or 15 minutes. And be sure to bring cash for the ticket; cards are not accepted. Welcome to the subterranean world of water and sewerage!

There are only four museums in the world that show us the universe of micro miniatures, and one of them is situated in Kiev, in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra monastery complex. This unparalleled collection is the work of artist Mykola Syadritsky, who employed special technologies, much passion and great patience in creating each of its 20 delightful hand-made exhibits. You’ll marvel at Syadritskiy’s creativity in conceiving such masterpieces as a twining rose inside a hollowed-out hair, a life-size flea made of gold and wearing golden shoes, a camel caravan sculpted within the eye of a needle, a balalaika in a poppy, and so on. Just the descriptions sound extraordinary, but when you look at these incredibly tiny works of art through a microscope you will be absolutely amazed. The museum’s micro miniatures delight not only with their beauty and size but also with the artist’s engineering genius. Just imagine: the smallest operating electromotor in the world, on display here, is www.kievcheckin.com

almost 20 times smaller than a poppy seed. The most miniature of all books that have ever been made is the illustrated 12-page Kobzar (The Bard) containing poems by the great Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, its size a mere 0.6 mm. It won’t take more than an hour of your time to examine these one-of-a-kind masterpieces. I highly recommend you to pay attention not only to the miniatures

themselves but also to the descriptions accompanying them. Visit this museum and you will not only see tiny and beautiful items but also understand that there are no limits to our capabilities when we’re doing what we love. To get to the museum, use the central entrance to the complex, where you can buy a separate ticket if you don’t want to visit the rest of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

If you’ve been to Kiev, you will no doubt have seen the majestic statue of a woman with a sword in her right hand and a shield in her left. Installed on the slopes above the Dnipro, she is visible even from the most remote points of the city. The sculpture is a part of the World War II Museum, considered one of the country’s largest museums and devoted to the World War II conflict between the Soviet Union and Germany. Be ready to walk a lot, because the museum covers approximately 25 acres and contains more than 300,000 exhibits and related memorials. The main exposition stretches through 16 halls, and the so-called node of the exposition is “The Road of War,” which unites

and connects all the halls thematically and chronologically. A lot of artifacts, including every type of weapon, uniform and machine imaginable, are represented in this museum, presenting a deep look at the war and its impact on Ukraine. The museum’s cool, quiet halls are a somber testament to the gravity of the conflict and vividly evoke those hard times. Loud, patriotic war songs are played through the museum sound system, while documents, photographs, newspapers and other materials in the displays explain the war, often through the personal stories of those who experienced it. The pleasant surprises here begin on your way into the museum. Built in an attractive neoclassical style, the National Art Museum is one of Kiev’s architectural jewels. The entrance features massive columns and is guarded by two lions of a very unusual appearance. About 40,000 items are exhibited on the museum’s two floors, including Ukrainian painting, sculptures, and graphics from the periods of Kievan Rus till the present. The museum is highlighted by the best collection of iconography in Ukraine, going back to rare pieces from the 12th century. There are also wonderful landscapes of picturesque Ukrainian nature by Serhiy Vasylkivskiy, portraits by Ivan Murashko (including the famous A Girl With a Red www.kievcheckin.com

Hat) and unique examples of the works of Taras Shevchenko and his followers. Also extremely valuable is the museum’s collection of Ukrainian Baroque art: paintings, icons, polychrome sculptures and old printed books. On the first floor, you will be amazed by a large-scale painting that occupies the entire wall — The Entrance of Bohdan Khmelnytsky to Kyiv in 1649, by artist Mykola Ivasyuk, who spent two decades finishing it. The collection of the Ukrainian avantgarde of the 20th century is a very special one, thanks to the works of such recognized avant-garde masters as A. Exter, A. Arkhipenko and D. Burlyuk. There are many new works of art coming to museum’s collections today, such as the unique icon

relief St. George in His Lifetime, dating to the 12th century; and works of the founder of international abstractionism, Kazimir Malevich, who was a native of Ukraine. Items drawn from the collections of the National Art Museum of Ukraine often become sensations when they go on tour with international exhibitions. And no wonder. You won’t notice how the time is flying while you are standing and staring at a charming landscape, or examining the depth of the eyes in a portrait. The National Art Museum of Ukraine is not the oldest in the world list of famous museums, but its prestige is growing steadily. On the last Sunday of the month, entrance to the museum is free.

Once inside you can also rent an Englishlanguage audio guide for UAH 50 (you’ll need to provide a deposit of UAH 100 that will be returned to you after you return the device). Entrance free on April 26 and May 18. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. (Monday - Saturday) chornobylmuseum.kiev.ua

One thing many foreigners know about Ukraine is that it experienced the terrible Chornobyl tragedy in 1986, which became the most severe nuclear accident and ecological catastrophe of the 20th century. Unfortunately, it was not a passing concern for Ukrainians; the devastating impact of this event continues to be felt and will be transmitted to our descendants, too. The museum, opened in 1992, makes clear the scale of the catastrophe through the fate of thousands of people — participants in the event, witnesses and victims — and makes sense of the lessons learned through this tragedy in an effort to ensure they are not forgotten. The museum exhibits a variety of artifacts from the scene of the accident and is also decorated in a special way, including a cradle containing toys of children who lived

in Chornobyl, paintings by contemporary artists on the topic of the catastrophe, a working model of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, a diorama showing the station before, during and after the explosion, and an electronic remembrance book dedicated to the “liquidators” — the military and civilian personnel who were called upon, at great risk to their own health and safety, to enter the site to prevent further devastating consequences. The exhibit stays away from conjecture, presenting simply facts as revealed through documents, photographs and even clothes. Above the entrance, a signboard proclaims the museum’s slogan: “Est dolendi modus, non est timendi.”

(“There is a limit to sadness, but there is no limit to anxiety.”) Visitors cross a barrier with flashing lights and walk up the “Chornobyl Road” staircase, which shows the towns and villages that had to be abandoned forever as a result of the disaster. The ceiling of the main hall is in the form of a map of the world showing nuclear stations. We recommend booking a tour or paying for the audio guide, which is available in English and other Western languages. It will take no more than two hours to examine all the exhibits and learn about the disaster. Nobody remains indifferent after visiting this museum. Come and experience it yourself!

At the heart of the museum, there is a complex of dioramas, some 30 landscapes depicting various bio groups. There is also a karst cave that you can enter for a nominal fee. The next exhibit made me really astonished - the hut made of mammoth bones. The museum’s vast collection means you’ll want to spend at least two hours here. It’s a great place to learn about chemistry, biology, geography and natural history, for both kids and adults looking to broaden their perspective on the world.

It’s a busy place on weekends, so if you can, try to visit on a weekday. Unfortunately, descriptions on most of the exhibits are in Russian only, very little in English. But the museum is a great visual delight, so don’t worry too much. While it may not have the technological whiz-bang attractions of many modern museums, there’s an endearing quality to this museum, as well as a small gift shop with interesting items to purchase. If you are interested in the natural world, you won’t regret a visit here.

The National Museum of Natural History at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is one of the biggest scientific research museums of its type in the world. Located in the center of Kiev, the building itself draws attention, as it’s an old mansion with impressive architecture. Geological, paleontological, zoological and botanical museums are united under one roof, on four floors. There are 24 halls with more than 30,000 items on exhibit. LOST INTERVIEW IN UKRAINE

THE ONE WHO BRINGS LIGHT:

ILLARIA 10 Illuminating Questions

When she was 5 years old, little Kateryna (who will later become famous through her stage name ILLARIA) said to her parents: “If you don’t take me to music school, I will stop attending kindergarten!” Now she is known as “the soul of the country,“ a new breath of Ukrainian ethnic music and mystical maiden. ILLARIA is famous all over the world for her amazing voice, original image and genuine love of life and native country. We asked ILLARIA about her professional plans, traveling, favorite places in Kiev and her own key to success. 1. Kateryna, would you be so kind to tell us your stage name origin? I know that ILLARIA in Greek means “one who brings light.“ When and under what conditions did you come up with your pseudonym? How do people usually address to you: by your real or stage name? I am Kateryna only for close people: my family and my friends. Ten years ago, I started to feel and understand a special kind of music and then decided to create a musical project. I tried to find the

22 Kiev Check-In

perfect name that matched my music. I believe the name ІLLАRІА was sent to me from heaven because I got the idea for my name while traveling by plane. As I found out later, this name has wonderful significance and energy. Since then it has become my talisman. 2. It is a well-known fact that you are called “the soul of the country“ among your fans, do you know why? Is it because of the musical genres you work in or some other reasons?

I started to be called this after I had participated in the 2nd season of the musical show “The Voice.” In one interview during the show, I mentioned that it is more important for me to become not just the voice of the country, but its soul. People believed me, felt my sincerity and passion for Ukrainian music and started to call me “the soul of the country.” You know, I am very pleased with it and at the same time, it’s a great responsibility to have such an honorary title. www.kievcheckin.com

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2017 3. Was it your childhood dream to become a musician or did you want to do something else in life? What other professions could you have worked in? What do you understand well, besides music, in case it will be necessary to ask you for some advice? Ever since I can remember I have had a passion for music. When I was 5 years old, I said to my parents that I would only continue attending kindergarten if they enrolled me in music school. I have never been forced to attend my classes there, I have been fond of my studies. In secondary school, I was an excellent pupil as I really wanted to sing in the band, where only “А“ pupils were accepted. My hobby from the childhood developed into professional activity. I studied at college for nearly 10 years and then at R. Glier Kiev Institute of Music where I teach singing now. As a matter of fact, teaching also brings me much pleasure. I have already had my “little stars“ and I am also planning to found my own vocal studio. I also write music for cinema, theatre, and create hits for other singers. 24 hours is not enough time to do everything I would like to. Besides all of this, I am a young mother and this important part of my life brings me so much happiness too. 4. What inspires you? Have a “crisis of creativity“ ever occurred in your life? If yes, how did you overcome it? Honestly, it is difficult to answer unambiguously when and how inspiration comes to me. I can be inspired by something good or bad, sad or happy, white or black and so on. My heart is always opened to the muse. Most of all, I am inspired by my family now – my beloved husband and my small daughter, who are my wings and my consolation. My family always supports and gives me reasons for creating great things. I also can be recharged easily after spending some time outdoors or going somewhere for a trip. Traveling usually inspires and develops us. www.kievcheckin.com

LOST IN INTERVIEW UKRAINE

5. What factor or traits of character contributed to your success so far? I think it is love of life and people, humanism, and perfectionism. 6. What is your favorite country and your favorite city abroad? Why? I have already mentioned that traveling is a very important part of our family life. Actually, it is our passion. Currently, we are traveling all over Ukraine very often, discovering its new, unexplored corners. We find this inspiring and exciting. We are also fond of traveling abroad, of course. Greece provokes the warmest memories for me and my husband because we passed the first stages of our relationship there. We both have Greek roots, so together with our friends, we travel there regularly. It was in Hellas, where we met, fell in love, and finally got engaged. 7. What attracts tourists to our country and vice versa what frightens them off? Why would you suggest them visiting Ukraine? My friends from other countries always pay attention to the beauty of Ukrainian people, landscapes, and ancient architecture. They are also fond of Ukrainian culture and cuisine. At the same time, they are upset because of mass poverty, the condition of our roads, and the war. I think there will be peace in Ukraine soon, as well as decent living conditions for Ukrainians and our business partners. I believe the whole world will come to Ukraine for inspiration and study. I dream that listeners from abroad will recognize and admire us and for my part, I try to do my best to attract people to our country through my music and Ukrainian language. If each Ukrainian develops our culture, science, economics and does it with love, we will be respected everywhere and what is more important, we will appreciate each other. There is no doubt, that Ukraine has enormous potential!

8. What is your favorite place in Kiev for listening to music, going for a walk, having dinner, meeting friends? Kiev is my native city, my great love, and inspiration! Every street, every corner breathes with history, romance, and mysticism here. I prefer performing in large halls, but I prefer listening to music in chamber halls, like St. Nicolas Cathedral, National Philharmonic of Ukraine, or St. Sophia’s Cathedral – places like these with perfect acoustics. I like to walk along the Landscape Alley and the Andriyivsky Descent. As I am not fond of restaurants, the best place for dinner with my family and friends is forests or coasts of the Dnipro river. 9. What are your artistic plans and what is your professional dream: perhaps some music award or millions of views on YouTube? Sometimes I want to achieve the first place in a contest, win a prestigious award, or collect millions of likes on social networks. However, eventually, I realized that the greatest value for me is to be an independent artist, who may remain free in her creative work. I really appreciate my fans and work with total dedication for those who are deeply connected with me at the level of the heart chakra. I dream of having my own «soul» network all over the world. Nowadays, the Internet helps musicians to find fans without any producers and immerse them into a music world, just touching the screen on their smart gadgets. This simplicity of communication really helps artists realize quickly all of their bold ideas and find those who are interested in them. I am so happy to live in present time. 10. What would you like to wish our readers, who are mainly tourists from different countries? Perhaps, you would like to give them some pieces of advice? Being a native Kiever, I invite everyone to my homeland. Come and experience your own impression of our country and its capital. I wish you all strong health, freedom, by all means, real peace, childlike kindness, and boundless love!

Mariyinsky Park is one of the most popular and romantic parks in Kiev, probably because it is located in the heart of the city and for its incredible loveliness and cleanliness. Combining natural beauty and architectural elements, Mariyinsky Park is one of Kiev’s oldest parks, founded in the eighteenth century. You can see many decorative trees (around 80 species), beautiful flowers and lush bushes. The Mariyinsky Palace was built in 1755 and named after Russian Emperor Alexander II’s wife Mariya, who admired the palace and actively participated in the reconstruction of the park in front of it. Nowadays, Mariyinsky Palace, located next to the Parliament, is a ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine (since 2002, the Palace has been under reconstruction). The park was opened to public in 1890 as "the University Botanical Garden." IN SEARCH FOR THE BEST

SEAFOOD IN KIEV

Although Ukraine’s maritime capital is Odessa, Kiev citizens are also crazy about the fresh seafood served in many local cafes and restaurants. This article is dedicated to fish lovers who, like me, are always on the lookout for the finest seafood places in Kiev, the ones that serve a vibrant collection of dishes that will almost have you smelling salt air right in our inland capital. … Here we go!

Odessa Thanks to its special atmosphere, fantastic service, originality in details and wonderful flavor matches, high-concept Odessa has become a bright spot for Kiev citizens and visitors who appreciate “the art of eating” and is at the top of the TripAdvisor rankings. The restaurant is a family business, currently run by a third-generation manager. Its notable interior design references its theme (the city of Odessa) only in passing, but emphasizes innovativeness, uniqueness, and atmosphere, using elements such as 30 km of nautical rope and a whole flock of toy lambs! Yuriy Pryemskyy, one of Ukraine’s best chefs, enthusiastically rules in the kitchen. “All the dishes — whether the part of traditional gastronomy or a whole new invention — are created on the principle of interesting and complex combinations of ingredients,” he explains. The menu is refreshed every month to allow guests to enjoy seasonal products served in a very non-standard way. As creative table service is a highlight of the restaurant, don’t be surprised to see your dish being cooked in front of you, or served in a cloud of dry-ice “smoke”! Many of Odessa’s meat and fish dishes are cooked in

Big Green Egg ovens, which lend incredible juiciness and an appetizing smokey flavor to the entree. Dishes are also often cooked using sous vide technology, which likewise makes for a juicy and flavorful result. Among the pearls of this gastronomic menu are trout fillet with hollandaise sauce, potatoes and asparagus (UAH 185), numerous seafood salads and snacks (mussels tempura with avocado aioli sauce, for example), fillet mignon with mushroom tortellini and green pepper sauce (UAH 249), and super-delicious creme brulee with mango and coconut (UAH 85).

The cocktail card is no less intriguing. Bright cocktails, favorites from the best bars worldwide, fruit lemonade, and other unique drinks perfectly complement the menu dishes with their own special wow factor. This restaurant pulls out all the stops to impress you! 114 Velyka Vasylkivska Str. +38 044 238 84 13 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. (till 12 a.m. on Friday and Saturday) odessarest.com.ua www.facebook.com/Instagram: www. instagram.com/ odessarest www.kievcheckin.com

5 Questions for

MISS UKRAINE 2017

This year, stunning Polina Tkach, an 18-year-old student from National Aviation University, has won the title of Miss Ukraine 2017. Despite her youth, Polina demonstrated not only outstanding natural beauty but also a strong personality and great performance during the competition. With this title, she becomes Ukraine’s official representative for the Miss World 2017 pageant, to be held later this year in China. INTERVIEW

4

How did you get interested in the Miss Ukraine National Contest?

Actually, I didn’t think of participating in the competition myself. One of the managers of the Miss Ukraine Contest contacted me after they had seen my pictures on Instagram and invited me to participate in the casting this year.

3

Apart from physical beauty, which other traits do you think helped you win this competition?

What are your secrets of beauty, and how do you manage to keep yourself in a good shape?

Well, loving yourself maybe sounds like a cliché, but it’s important. I would say it’s necessary to accept yourself just as you are, with your strengths and weaknesses. Apart from that, I think every girl should pay special attention and care to her skin and hair. If you are inclined to be overweight, in particular, you should stick to a healthy diet. Also, I would say that makeup does not always make you better. I am for natural beauty, first of all. You’ll often see me without any makeup while walking along the street, for example.

All factors are important, so I can’t say it’s just one thing. In my opinion, it’s important to be honest and open, and not to make an impression that you are better than you really are. Also, I think my good social skills and ambitious nature helped me so much.

2

What were your goals before the competition, and how have they changed since your win?

My aims did not actually change, but they became more ambitious. I’d like to improve my level of living, and therefore personal development and self-improvement are my everyday tasks. I want to develop in many ways, so I participate in various kinds of training and educational activities, and I’m learning a lot these days. I would like to do something significant with my life. Also, I really like to spend time on my hobbies, especially dancing and drawing.

5

Tell us, what features should a man have to attract your attention?

(laughing) Well, I appreciate honesty and fairness in people, and what I really dislike is impudence. The man should be also responsible, with a good sense of humor and strong charisma. For me, it’s also important that I find him interesting to talk to. (I also like it when he uses a nice cologne!)

TOP 7 TIPS

for Kiev Visitors this Autumn

Kiev is considered the cultural and spiritual center of Eastern Europe with more than 14 centuries of rich history. Below we have compiled a few top tips to help you in navigating the city and get the best out of your stay in Kiev this month.

HIRE A LOCAL GUIDE Immerse yourself in the fun, fantastic, magical atmosphere of the city, get acquainted with its historical background, discover nightlife, or learn hidden secrets of Kiev by hiring a local tour guide. Tour guides are quite inexpensive in Kiev (A full day private tour will cost you < $100) and starting your stay in Kiev with a tour from a professional guide can be a great way to get acquainted with the city quickly. Need help with arranging a tour? Email us at kievcheckin@contactukraine.com for recommendations.

TIP 1

ACCOMMODATION

TIP 2

If you are traveling on business, you will feel quite at home staying at one of the many well-established international hotel chains such as Hilton, Radisson, InterContinental, Hyatt, Fairmont Grand, etc. in Kiev. However note that their prices in Kiev can be quite steep for a non-business traveler (in the $200-400 range per night). For individual travelers, staying in a local hotel or one of the service apartments can be a very attractive option. Local hotels are usually cheaper but their quality varies greatly. Do your homework before

you book a local hotel. Alternatively, daily rent of a serviced apartment in the city center is very popular among foreign travelers. You can find such accommodations through websites such as Dobovo, Airbnb, Booking and others. The price would be usually around USD 30-80 per night (depending on location and quality of internal design). Typically you will get a cosy furnished apartment consisting of bedroom, living room, bathroom, and a kitchenette.

MEETING WITH LOCALS Ukrainian nation is one of the most hospitable on Earth. People are generally friendly and glad to meet new people. Visiting theater, opera, concert or other Kiev activities can be a great way to meet locals with common interests. Also, there are a lot of opportunities to make friends with them during various networking events and local meetup groups. Here are some online resources for such events: • Fryday Afterwork - the most popular weekly social event in Kiev: www.facebook.com/fryday.kyiv • Meetup: www.meetup.com • Speaking clubs: lec.link If you want to arrange a meetup place

in Kiev, the most popular outdoor meeting points are near central metro stations. Some popular meeting points include: • Stella (independence monument) on Maidan metro station • In front of the Central Post Office by the Monument with the Globe on Maidan metro station • McDonald’s on Khreschatyk or Lva Tolstogo metro station • National Opera house on Teatralna metro station • The monument of Skovoroda in Kontraktova Ploshcha metro station During rainy days, you may want to pick

TIP 3 one of the cafes in city center such as (“Coffee House” at Kreschatik 7/11 or “Shokoladnitsa” at Kreschatik 24).

LOCAL SIM CARD If you are going to be in Ukraine for more than a day or two, we highly recommend that you get a local pre-paid SIM card. There are three major mobile operators in Ukraine: Kyivstar, Vodafone, and Lifecell and you will be fine with any one of them. You can get a monthly tariff plan that offers relatively inex-

pensive mobile communication and unlimited 3G Internet at just $4-6 per month. You can buy the pre-paid SIM card at the airport or just about everywhere in the city-centre including supermarkets, press kiosks, street stands, and stores selling cell phones. www.kievcheckin.com

MONTHLY TIPS

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

TIP 5

The easiest way to navigate the city is to use Uber or Uklon (a local Uber like service) taxi service. Traditional taxi service companies in Kiev often have very poor and unpredictable service and therefore it’s better to avoid them. Both Uber and Uklon can be booked online through their mobile application, have very good service and are very cost-effective as well.

CASH & CURRENCY EXCHANGE In Kiev most retail points you can use credit cards to pay, however, traveler’s checks are generally not accepted. It is highly advisable always to have some cash with you as well. Note that all cash payments within Ukraine are allowed in the local currency Hryvnia (UAH) only. As of this writing, 1 USD equals to roughly 26 UAH. You can easily exchange any major

TIP 7

www.kievcheckin.com

foreign currency to Hryvnia at the airport, one of the local banks, or endless exchange kiosks located around the city. Because of non-favourable rates at the airport, only exchange minimum amount at the airport. Whenever exchanging the money, you can ask for a “form 377” in case you plan to exchange leftover Hryvnia back to foreign currency when leaving the country.

Additionally, you can easily get around the city using metro, which is cheap and covers all the main destinations in Kiev. One way ticket regardless of your destination costs only UAH 5. Note that during morning and evening rush hours, metro can be quite crowded. For safety, keep your belongings under your watchful eyes in metro and any other crowded places.

TIP 6

IF YOU FELL IN LOVE WITH KIEV It’s quite possible that you might fall in love with Kiev once you visit the city! Consequently, you may decide to start a business or buy a property here. No worries, help is on hand! Feel free to get in touch with ContactUkraine - a professional services firm with English- speaking staff and specializing in legal and business support to foreigners interested in investing in Ukraine. IT OUTSOURCING TO UKRAINE A Guide For Foreign Companies

Ukraine’s plethora of highly qualified IT developers, moderate salaries, good English proficiency, and innovative approach to development are drawing increasing attention from foreign companies and investors, who view the country as a leading IT outsourcing destination in Eastern Europe. Ukraine is home to the largest number of IT professionals in Europe and currently employs more than 90,000 IT specialists, including 50,000 software developers. Number of certified IT professionals is growing in Ukraine for 30 % annually with approximately 30,000 IT students, who graduated from Ukrainian universities this year. The presence of R&D and development centers carrying the names of global companies such as Google, Microsoft, Samsung, Oracle, Transferwise, Boeing, eBay, Siemens, IBM, Huawei, and many others is strong evidence of the high quality of IT talent in Ukraine. Moreover, the salary expectations of Ukrainian IT staff are considerably lower than in other European countries. If you’re an entrepreneur or decisionmaker for an international company thinking of opening an IT branch in Ukraine or outsourcing IT work to Ukraine, this article offers a general guide to the most commonly asked questions.

SPECIALIZATION OF UKRAINIAN IT PROFESSIONALS Ukraine ranks fourth worldwide for its number of Certified IT Specialists (after the United States, India and Russia). Ukrainian software engineers are skilled in a variety of technologies, while the most popular programming languages are Java, C#, JavaScript, PHP, and Python. Ukraine ranks (in the world) •1st in the number of Unity3D game developers and C++ engineers •2nd in JavaScript, Scala, and Magento developers •3rd in the number of Node.js, Python, ASP.NET, Ruby, Symfony, and PHP developers •5th in the number of front-end developers There’s no shortage of Android app developers and iOS developers, either.

TALENT GEOGRAPHY Around 86% of all IT talent in Ukraine is concentrated in the top five cities, namely:

44 Kiev Check-In

1. Kyiv 2. Kharkiv 3. Lviv 4. Dnipro 5. Odesa The salary expectations of IT specialists vary depending on education, experience, and area of expertise (ranging from $400 to $5,000 per month in general). On average, salaries in Kyiv are 10-15% higher than in other IT hubs of Ukraine (for example, in Lviv and Kharkiv). According to this research, the top universities for IT specialists include Kyiv Mohyla Academy, Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, Lviv Polytechnic National University, Donetsk National University (now located in Vinnytsya), and Kharkiv National University, among others. The most popular job-search websites in Ukraine for IT professionals are jobs.dou. ua and rabota.ua. Other popular methods of finding suitable IT professionals include LinkedIn, local IT Clusters and communities, regular IT events, and personal recommendations from people in the industry.

STRUCTURING YOUR IT OUTSOURCING OPERATIONS

Option: Hire Freelancers as a Foreign Company

When deciding on how to establish your IT outsourcing operations in Ukraine, you have the following three most common choices: 1. IT outsourcing to a local company in Ukraine (based on a services agreement for contracted IT work) 2. Hiring IT professionals directly on a freelance basis (based on a freelance services agreement with each freelancer) 3. Opening a local IT company and hiring IT staff as a mix of salaried employees and freelancers. Each of these options is described in more detail below to help you choose the option that suits you best.

Under this option, you (as a foreign company) will directly hire IT professionals in Ukraine on a freelancing basis under a freelance services agreement. This is a widely used option for getting IT work done in Ukraine because it offers good benefits to both foreign companies as well as local IT professionals.

Option: Outsource to a Local IT Company In most cases, this option is ideal for short-term projects. You will not need to spend time and effort in hiring and managing your own IT staff and dealing with various regulatory and compliance laws. Your local outsourcing partner IT company will provide you with a ready staff and facilities based on the needs of your project, which will help you get started and be productive from day one.

Although Ukraine has a very large number of such IT outsourcing companies, ranging from small to large, your main challenge is to find the company that best fits the software development maturity and skills required for your project and your budgetary constraints. This is often not an easy task, and you run the risk of hiring the wrong IT outsourcing partner and thus risking the successful outcome of your project.

Specifically: • To work as freelancers, individuals in Ukraine must register as Private Entrepreneurs (PE) in Ukraine (a simple business structure similar to Sole Proprietor in other countries). Interestingly, this structure offers an extremely favourable and simplified income tax rate of 5% to freelancers. This is in stark contrast to a very high tax burden of more than 40% (split between the employee and the employer) when working as a salaried employee. • For foreign companies, this option not only reduces the Ukrainian tax burden for hiring a local IT workforce, it also saves costs associated with incorporating and maintaining a local company, setting up a local office, hiring administrative staff, dealing with Ukrainian employment laws, and so on. Please note that even though registration and ongoing compliance procedures www.kievcheckin.com

OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2017 for private entrepreneurs are simple, as a rule, foreign companies hire a local professional service provider to assist with registration and regular reporting procedures for their freelancers. You will need to send the salary of each freelancer directly from abroad to their special PE bank account (which is different from their regular personal bank account). If your freelance staff is growing, you can save time and money on multiple international bank transfers by using the settlement services of one of the local banks. They will generally charge a commission ranging from 0.5 to 1% for settlement services. This process works as follows: 1. The foreign company becomes a client of the Bank for the purpose of handling local multiple settlements. 2. The Bank opens a special “transit account for handling transactions related to such a client. 3. On a monthly basis, the foreign company sends in one installment of funds to the transit account in an amount sufficient to pay the salaries of its local staff, together with a registry containing information on the amount owed to each freelancer and their bank details. 4. Local bank sends money to each freelancer in the amount specified in the registry.

www.kievcheckin.com

BUSINESS LOST IN UKRAINE CORNER

Option: Establish a local IT company Under this option, you will open a limited liability company in Ukraine as a subsidiary of your parent foreign company, which will then hire IT professionals either as salaried employees based on a labour agreement or based on a freelance agreement (in most cases, there will be a mix of such arrangements). This option can be good for longterm projects in Ukraine, when you are planning to establish an office and hire a large number of IT professionals. As mentioned previously, the IT staff you will hire based on a freelancing agreement will be subjected to approximately 5% tax only. On the other hand, for staff hired as salaried employees, the company should assume roughly 40% tax overhead on top of the salary in-hand to the employee, namely: 1. 18% personal income tax (deducted from gross income of employee); 2. 1.5% military tax (deducted from gross income of employee); 3. 22% payroll tax (paid by employer, i.e. on the top of gross income of each employee). Most companies tend to reduce their costs by arranging staff as a mix of freelancers and full-time staff. However, such a structure requires careful tax and legal planning in order to avoid getting on the wrong side of the law and into trouble with tax authorities. Due to the weak political climate, lack of rule of law and enforcement of Intellectual

Property Rights (IPR) legislation, as well as a still-inefficient court system in Ukraine, in most cases foreign businesses tend to establish R&D centers only for the purpose of creating product, while the parent company retains product ownership and keeps the majority of its profits outside Ukraine. Here is a common practice when setting up an IT company in Ukraine: 1. A foreign parent company opens a local limited liability company in Ukraine (LLC). 2. LLC hires local IT professionals (a mix of freelancers and salaried employees). 3. The foreign parent company signs a services agreement with its local subsidiary (LLC) with monthly payment in amounts sufficient for local expenses. 4. Every month, parent company pays its local subsidiary under the services agreement, which allows the LLC to take care of its expenses, including salaries of the IT staff.

SUMMARY Ukraine is a great place for outsourcing IT work, thanks to the availability of a highly skilled workforce at very moderate salaries. Hopefully, this article has given you a good idea what will be the best way to structure your IT outsourcing operations in Ukraine in your particular situation. We at ContactUkraine offer a wide range of consulting services in the areas of business setup, outsourcing, regulatory compliance, taxation, and related fields.
