Welcome to the new Superkidz Magazine! You are probably wondering why it is ‘new’. That is because we are now incorporating selected sections from our other magazine, Kidz, for parents by parents and kids, which is currently not in print. After we announced that we would stop publishing Kidz we have had requests from parents and kids to keep the magazine going, especially after we received an Honourable Mention in the Prime Minister’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Award for Media Reporting. So we have chosen your favourite parts of Kidz magazine and included them in Superkidz. We hope you enjoy our new baby. Superkidz is two years old and like a toddler who has found his feet, we are now taking bigger steps. We are finding our voice and hope to give you even better stories. And like any terrible two year old, we will sometimes go against our parent’s wishes, or at least question authority. Parents, we need you to tell us what you want – more articles, more event news? And kids, do you want more activities or contests? Movie tickets? Any suggestions for our Kidz Day Out? In the past, we have visited SPCA, Domino’s Pizza and Hi-5 Bread Town, a fire station, chocolate factory and even an aviation museum. Tell us what you would like to do and we will try to make it happen. This is your magazine, so do give us your feedback and comments so we can make this the best magazine. I received Superkidz and Kidz magazines today (Mar-Apr2010 issue) and with much regret found out that Kidz mag will be discontinued. I think this magazine has great potential and should continue to reach the public, be it printed or online. I don’t think there are many magazines available in the market of the same nature. Nevertheless I would continue with Ga Hei’s membership with Superkidz Club, and read Kidz online. Crystal Low, sent via email

My parents said they will take me on a trip if I get 5 As in my school exam. So I tried my best and really got 5 As! Then my parents told me they will take me to Genting Highlands. I read that HJH. Mahanom Basri Kidz magazine is President, Association of Childcare Centres Selangor not being continued. That’s really a shame! It’s really a different parenting magazine. I cannot find any other local magazine like it in the bookshops. Kidz magazine is really one of a kind! Luckily my kids will still get their Superkidz magazines and get to enjoy all the games, general knowledge and contests. I just want to say, good luck Kidz in whatever you do! Chickenpox Care

Though chickenpox is considered ’normal’ during childhood, it is a rather “itchy” experience. However, you can help ease your child’s discomfort.

“What can be done to prevent scarring?” A real fear among parents when it comes to chickenpox is the scars that will form. Thus, it is very important that you prevent your child from scratching himself. Bacteria on your child’s hands and under his fingernails may infect the broken skin blisters. This will cause complications like skin infections, which may eventually lead to permanent scarring. • • •

Keep his fingernails short so he won’t run the risk of hurting his skin should he scratch. When he sleeps, let him wear cotton gloves or mittens. This is to prevent your child from accidentally scratching himself while he is asleep. Food rich in beta-carotene and vitamin-C is important for the growth and repair of skin tissues. Make sure you include plenty of carrots, spinach and cabbages (foods rich in beta-carotene) in his food as these may help heal your child’s skin.

“Should children’s diets be given any special consideration?” There are no food taboos when it comes to feeding a child with chickenpox. However, your child may suffer from a loss of appetite and refuse to eat much in the first few days of chickenpox. Additionally, blisters may sometimes form in their mouths and throats, making it difficult for them to eat. The general rule on how to feed your child during this period: • •

It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. The typical symptoms include red, itchy skin rashes that eventually develop into thinwalled blisters and general symptoms such as fever, abdominal pains, sore throat and headache. This illness will usually run its course in about 5 to 10 days, although it takes about 10 to 21 days to develop after a person has been exposed to the virus. Chickenpox is one of the most highly contagious diseases and can spread easily from person-to-person through air, saliva or direct contact with another person with chickenpox. Thus, anticipate that your child will probably get chickenpox at some point during his childhood and that you may also get infected from him or his friends if you have not had it or had never been vaccinated. Care For Chickenpox Parents frequently do not pay much attention to information on chickenpox until the disease afflicts someone in the family. Questions only start to arise when they are at home worrying and caring for their sick child. So, what are the common questions about chickenpox care that you should know the answers to? Read on to find out. “The itchiness caused by the chickenpox rashes and blisters is driving my child crazy. How do I reduce this itch?” Chickenpox rashes are very itchy, so anticipate that your child will be very irritable and will attempt to scratch a lot. While you are not able to completely relieve your child of the itchiness, you can make him more comfortable. Try these methods below: • Give your child either lukewarm or cool baths every 3 to 4 hours. If you have to, use soap that is milder than his normal one as the latter may be too harsh for his overly sensitive skin. After the bath, pat him dry instead of rubbing him to prevent breaking the blisters. • Calamine lotion can help relieve itchy rashes. The lotion is a cooling agent that soothes by absorbing excess heat from the surface of the skin. It also has mild antiseptic properties that will prevent secondary skin infections. • Dress your child in lightweight clothing. Stay away from wool and heavy clothing as they tend to irritate the skin. • If your child suffers from severe itch, check with your doctor about prescribing him antihistamines. Remember to always refer back to your doctor before giving your child any medication.

Ensure that your child gets plenty of fluids to stay well-hydrated. If your child gets tired of plain water, offer him fruit juices instead. It is not necessary to load your child with any specific food groups or nutrients. Keep in mind that a well-balanced diet is key to helping your child to recover from the disease. Offer your child foods that are soft in texture, cold and bland to make eating more comfortable. Steer away from foods that are spicy, acidic and salty as they may irritate the blisters in his mouth and throat.

“ How do I prevent my child from spreading chickenpox to his siblings?” Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily. More often than not, one infected child can spread the disease to almost everyone he comes into contact with, especially his siblings who have not been infected before. The only way to completely halt the spread among siblings is to separate them before any sign of chickenpox rash appears and until the rashes clear up. Moreover, ensure the healthy siblings wash their hands as often as possible, particularly before eating and after using the washroom. Caregivers must also take extra care of their hygiene when around the healthy child, particularly after they have come into contact with the infected child. Preventing Chickenpox Chickenpox is considered a “typical”, but mild childhood disease. Most of the time it is mild, but seeing your child suffering such discomfort can be distressing. Additionally, there is always a chance that the disease may develop into a more severe condition. Thus, if parents want to avoid all the hassles that accompany chickenpox, there are a few things that they can do; ► Breastfeeding Mothers who already have had chickenpox will be immune to the disease and will most likely be able to pass on this immunity to her newborn baby through the antibodies in her breast milk. Thus, mothers are encouraged to breastfeed their newborns, especially in the first few months of their newborn’s life. ► Vaccination According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chickenpox vaccine is the best way to prevent chickenpox, with complete protection to about 80-90% of children who are immunised. The vaccine, which contains the weakened form of the live varicella-zoster virus, may cause mild symptoms in rare cases. .

Four diseases–in-one By now, the new tetravalent MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella & varicella) vaccine, which combines the compulsory measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine with the chickenpox vaccine, is available. Parents can now opt to give their child additional protection against chickenpox without increasing the number of injections for their child. Talk to your doctor if you would like to explore this option.

Additionally, wholecell pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine has also been replaced with acellular pertussis vaccine, which causes fewer reactions and less fever. These are improvements to the national schedule and are given in the form of combination vaccines.

What are Combination Vaccines? Combination vaccines consist of two or more individual vaccines that have been combined into one single injection. This is a practical way to protect children against as many preventable diseases in as little time and hassle as possible.

Why should I give my Child Combination Vaccines? If you are in doubt on whether or not you should give your child combination vaccines, take a look at what both you and your child stand to gain;

How often do you see a child sit still and utter not a single sound while receiving a shot? Hardly. Many parents have to deal with their child’s tears and fears whenever they take their little ones for the scheduled vaccination injections. It can be equally tormenting for the parents as they watch their child going through the pain and distress. 10 Diseases, 8 Injections Did you know that under the National Immunisation Schedule (NIP), children in Malaysia are protected from up to 10 diseases? The diseases that are covered are tuberculosis (TB), Hepatitis B, diphteria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus (‘lockjaw’), polio, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), measles, mumps and rubella. Children receive more than 8 mandatory doses of vaccination (excluding booster shots) through injections by their first birthday. While it may be a harrowing process bringing your child for their shots, remember that missing any one of these vaccines is a risk to your child’s health, exposing him to potentially fatal diseases. Just because we do not see these vaccine-preventable diseases any more does not mean we should stop being vigilant. Things have now changed for the benefit of both children and parents worldwide, including Malaysia. With the availability of what is known as combination vaccines, parents can now lessen those dramatic moments in the doctor’s office, minimise their child’s distress, and at the same time ensure their child is well protected against several common diseases. Read on as we try to answer these questions and more. 1. Are combination vaccines effective? There are many aspects that need to be considered before vaccines are combined, including the reactivity of vaccine components against each other and the stability of all components in the vaccines. Combination vaccines that have been successfully produced and used are as safe and effective, and possibly more so than individual single-disease vaccines. It has been shown that combination vaccines produce similar or fewer reactions at the injection site and throughout the body when compared to single-disease vaccine. 2. Will children be able to handle the high dosage of antigens introduced in one single combination vaccine shot? Most vaccines contain a weakened form of antigens from the bacteria/virus that will elicit a response from the immune system, but will not cause the development of a disease. Even with combination vaccines, studies have shown that combination vaccines cannot “overload” your child’s immune system. Children’s immune system is capable of handling many more times the antigens compared to those introduced through combination vaccines.

Safer and Better The Ministry of Health has recently replaced live oral polio vaccine (OPV) with inactivated injectable one (IPV), which is safer (no vaccine associated paralytic polio and other serious complications) and also more flexible as it can also be used by people with impaired immune systems, autoimmune diseases and organ transplants.

3. Where can I get the option of combination vaccines? Combination vaccines under the National Immunisation Schedule are typically accessible in both government and private hospitals or clinics. Among a few combination vaccines that are now under the schedule are MMR (trivalent) and DTaP-IPV-HiB (pentavalent). Additional combination vaccines (eg; tetravalent MMRV that covers measles, mumps, rubella and chicken pox or hexavalent DTaPIPV-Hib-HepB) are only available in private practices. At first glance, combination vaccines are not necessarily cheaper. However, it saves parents’ time by having lesser doctor visits and injections, thus lowering the total costs.

Morocco offered over 100° Fahrenheit temperatures during production. Due to this, massive, air-conditioned tents were erected in Marrakesh. One was as big as a football field and housed wardrobe, hair and makeup for the film’s background players. An adjoining tent was built just for washing and drying. It was a mind-blowing 124° Fahrenheit on the last day of Moroccan filming. It was reported that during filming in that country the Prince of Persia company consumed 1,114,894 bottles of water!

The person I admired most is my great-grandmother, AMBROSIA C BERNARDINO. She was born on December at the province of La Union, Philippines. She grew up in the town of Bacnotan. Her father was a farmer and so was her mother.

jewelries that she kept over the years or that she bought from her hard-earned money. She had been a very good example to younger generations. She received awards from the church and government organisations as well as non-government organisations. She passed away at the age of 100. I admire her so much that I would like to develop such character traits, most especially her being a Godfearing woman.

When she went to Manila, she got married and had six children. Their names are Eddie, Leonardo, Ricardo, David, Zosima and Lolita. She was able to raise them up through selling preserved fish sauce called bagoong. She went from one house to another persuading them to buy. She also sold fruits from their farm. I like her because she was diligent, hard-working and patient. She woke up everyday very early in the morning at 4:30 to clean the yard and the surroundings of the house. It took her one and a half hour to finish. She never complained of anything painful even in the event of being sick. In her poor status in life, she never complained. She learned to be contented with what she had, but she was always striving to be better. Despite her lacking in education she was invited to give words of wisdom during school graduation and commencement exercises. Not only that, she also managed to give gifts to her grandchildren. *minimal corrections have been made to article to preserve its originality My sister was born on 25th November 2008. She has celebrated her 1st birthday last November. Her name is Tan Ee Xin. Baby Ee Xin has small eyes and she has fair skin. She is a super size baby because she is tall and chubby. Her fingers are small but she holds things tight. Whenever I tried to take something away from her, she will never let it go but she screams like other girls. My sister likes to grab my book while I’m reading. She loves to play my keyboard too. She likes to eat porridge which I think is yummy and I would eat her leftover porridge. When she is hungry she will say nennen-no. She likes to copy (imitate) our words. She could say daddy, papa, mama, mummy, bye, koko, ball, book and bag now. When she is hungry, she will suck her thumb. She no longer crawls clumsily but is a fast walker now. Everyone at home has been waiting eagerly for her first step. We were so excited to see her walking. She has the sweetest smile even with only 11 teeth now. I love my baby sister because she is very cute. I’m happy to share with her all my toys. I hope that I will be having another sister like her. My present for her 1st birthday is lots of KISSES and HUGS. I’m looking forward to the day mum would say, “Edric, now you can carry your sister!”

Dr Billy Kueek: Congratulations on your baby girl! She must be a doll! Being a modern day parent is tough, juggling work, family and self so I am delighted you are enjoying motherhood.

The baby takes up both your time and attention, and therefore the time between the two of you is compromised. Find the opportunity and plan some time just for the both of you, with no distractions. From your message, I gather that someone looks after baby during work days, so perhaps both of you can take half day leave from work and check into the nice Hilton KL together, to enjoy an afternoon of sun and cuddling, private time enjoying each other’s company.

With the arrival of the baby, both of you had to make adjustments and it’s no longer life as before. While you are managing to juggle as well as you can, while still yearning for the affection from your husband, remember that he is also going through changes and adjustments. Since we all have

Focus and be thankful he is utilising his affection on the baby and is still trying to be loving with you and not hanging around outside after work with his colleagues and friends.

Dr Billy Kueek: Dear Youth, First off, be thankful that you have such loving and caring parents. Many parents I know pin their hopes on their child’s success and you have such parents, so be thankful and try to understand their loving intentions. While they may have their point, you have yours too. Their thinking that you might lose out by others snatching up the good jobs and reaping the rewards have some sense of truth, after all, they are only concerned for your future. Of course, if your friends who graduate earlier happen to face an economic crisis, then you are the one who might be blessed instead by graduating later. As we cannot see the future, there is no way to see who is right. They do not wish for you to lose out and suffer, neither do you. So, what difference would it make if you see the world now or later? I can think of a couple of things you can consider:

I’ll be finishing college soon, and before going to university I want to see the world. A few of my friends suggested that we go backpacking for a few months and I really want to go. But my parents are very old fashioned. They want me to start university straight away, so I don’t ‘lose out’ to others. They say if I start later, then all my other friends will graduate sooner than me, snatch up all the good jobs and reap all the rewards. I don’t really agree, and I really want to take a break and see how big the world is. How can I convince my parents? -- Disappointed youth (21 years old)

1. Speak to them and explain why you wish to travel first before continuing your studies. I believe their concerns are motivated by love and that could include worries about you going backpacking on your own. 2. How about going ahead with University first and then backpacking during holidays?

Raising a Bilingual Child PART 3 OF OUR FASCINATING THREE-PART SERIES ON RAISING A BILINGUAL CHILD

Knowing two or more languages can be a distinct advantage in life. Bilingualism enables children to communicate with a wider variety of people, and exposes them to different cultures. It can open up more job opportunities later in life, and research indicates that learning two different language systems can enable children to have advantages in thinking skills. However raising bilingual children involves some important decisions that involve the child’s identity, self-esteem, schooling options, as well as social factors.

Will my child become confused learning two languages? Children have an amazing capacity for learning languages and seem equipped with the skills to learn many languages simultaneously. However, certain strategies can assist in this process. Experts stress separating the two languages so that children instinctively learn to distinguish between different language systems, thus making language acquisition easier for them. Hence working out the boundaries between the languages is useful; for example having one parent consistently communicating in the same language, and not switching to another, creates a genuine need for the child to communicate with that parent in the target language.

Another way of establishing boundaries between languages is when both parents speak only one language in the home, and the second language is used at school. Children’s language development is strongly influenced by their peers, and many children pick up an additional language because they have a genuine desire or need to communicate with their friends.

A third possibility is for one language to be spoken both at home and at school, and the second only with another group of people, for example the child’s grandparents. However, for this strategy to be effective, the child needs to have regular contact with the grandparents, and they in turn need to communicate freely with the child in the target language.

Consistency is key Consistency is a central issue in early language learning. If you mix languages in the same conversation, young children will experience difficulty separating vocabulary and grammar into the appropriate language. They may learn the “mixed” language as one hybrid language. An example of this is children who speak “Manglish” and who struggle to make themselves understood to either native English speakers or native Chinese speakers because of the adoption of this pidgin language.

Striking a balance If children attend school in one language all day and only have a short time to hear the other language at home, it’s likely the school language will develop much more easily than the home language.

Thus it is important to plan for additional time spent using the home language in a variety of situations and with a variety of speakers. Rich language experiences in both languages are essential for good bilingual development.

Language quality The language used with young children should not be too complex and should focus on developing language skills for genuine communication, rather than on meaningless drilling or rote learning. New words and phrases need to be reinforced through stories, songs, rhymes and general conversation. Lots of encouragement and praise should be given to the children for their efforts at communicating. As a parent you need to be a good listener and provide good language models by using a rich vocabulary and by engaging your children in conversations. Providing books, music, and even videos in both languages is a great way to stimulate language development.

Children are individuals As a parent, it is essential to be aware that all children are different. Each child learns language at his or her own speed and in his or her own way. Some children appear to have a greater natural aptitude for language learning than others. This is thought to be due to a variety of factors, such as:

Stability and mobility – A family that remains in the second language community for a longer period of time will increase the chances of the child retaining the second language.

Relationships within the family

- Interfamily relationships do affect bilingual language development. For example, if the father speaks a different language from the mother, but is often away from home, the child will not learn his language as easily as the mother’s.

Attitudes towards the target language - A child needs to understand and feel that the languages spoken by his family members, in his school and in his community have a sense of worth. Children are more likely to willingly communicate in a language if they perceive the language as positive and meaningful.

Each level will take up minimum eight to maximum 36 lessons, depending on student’s requirements. Before moving onto the next level, they will be tested to ascertain that they have mastered the necessary skills. So although it is fun, lessons are structured and each student’s progress is noted.

There are spacious cubicles for changing, showering and for washrooms right next to the pool. There is also a spacious indoor waiting area for parents, or they can opt to sit by the pool and watch their kids.

Teach children to be money-wise Kidz Smart Academy teaches children the value of money and the importance of being financially sound from a young age.

At what age do children discover money? It may be as young as the age of three when they see (or hear) coins and realise that this shiny stuff can be used to get things like sweets or toys. They may not know what it is or its worth but they grasp the idea that it can be exchanged for things they want. Kidz Smart Academy answers some common queries by parents about their Financial Literacy (FLiP) programmes. Q : Why should my children learn about financial literacy?

Q : Do you have other programmes other than Financial Literacy?

A : When children start school (in Standard 1), they are likely to be given pocket money. It is not uncommon for children to spend all their pocket money on snacks or little trinkets. Many of them do not think about what they should spend the pocket money on or do not know how to save their money. Our role is to show them how to put some money away each day and only buy what they need.

A : We have a Communications programme which teaches children how to speak more confidently in public. We will also be introducing more programmes in 2011.

Q : Since my daughter already learns Maths in school, how is this different? A : The programme does not teach Maths. Instead, we put their Maths knowledge into practice such as percentages and fractions, as well as how to calculate simple and compound interest.

Q : Are your classes conducted by qualified or certified trainers and if so, by which organisation? A : All Kidz Smart Academy trainers are MasterClass Trainers, trained and certified by Billy Kueek International, one of Asia’s leading training organizations.
