It was originally launched as a summertime newspaper called the "Island Crier" (for your local news today, pick up the venerable "Block Island Times"). Block Island ferries are like unadorned, short-run cruise ships bound for one fun, exotic destination. You can count on this being an exhilarating, memorable trip. Exotic Rhode Island? Indeed, look at the color of the water and the sands along Crescent Beach. Hike into Rodman’s Hollow.

Ponder the grand scale of the Mohegan Bluffs. Be awed by the immensity and high perch of the Southeast Lighthouse. Consider the tall clay bluffs above the island’s southern beaches.

Block Island is a place like no other.

Its collection of wildlife you will find

nowhere else in the world. Island residents (unique unto themselves) have fought hard to preserve habitat for insects, birds, mollusks, flora and humans, too. Thus you’ll find abundant clean water, open spaces and countless pretty viewsheds. Block Island is one of just a few towns in this country with a main street that looks out over the ocean, with unobstructed views to the horizon.

Block Island has two commercial districts —

Old Harbor and New Harbor. The business center is Old Harbor, which fans out along Water Street with shops, restaurants and hotels. From there, Ocean Avenue leads to beautiful New Harbor, which hosts three marinas and four restaurants. New Harbor’s Great Salt Pond is a favorite with boaters, and it’s the landing point for the ferry from Montauk, NY.

An island head count taken annually on Groundhog Day typically finds 900 to 1,000 people “on-island.” Block Island, Rhode Island is unique in one special way: it is the smallest town (in both population and land area) in the smallest state.

There are hundreds of deer. Also common: mice, rats, turtles, muskrat, snakes, plus various freshwater fish and birds. But there are no squirrels, chipmunks, skunks, possum or raccoon on Block Island!

Just off the ferry, straight ahead, you’ll find restrooms at the Visitor’s Center.

You’ll also find public toilets at the harbormaster’s shack in Old Harbor, the Fire/Police Station, the Island Free Library, the Hog Pen Marina in New Harbor and the Town Beach pavilion. Port-a-Johns are set up at the Southeast Lighthouse and Mansion Beach.

hat can you tell me about the W offshore wind farm planned for Block Island?

Deepwater Wind is planning to build one of the nation’s first offshore wind farms. Five turbines generating enough clean, renewable energy to power the entire island may be situated in ocean waters three miles southeast of the island. Block Island electric customers currently rely on large diesel generators and pay some of the highest rates in the country; they could see a significant reduction in their power costs when the wind farm is operational.

THE NORTH LIGHT

Sites & Sights Places not to miss while on Block Island

It’s a half mile beach hike to this destination.

Arriving by ferry, the first bit of Block Island you’ll see is the North Lighthouse. Perched since 1867 amongst rose-strewn sand dunes, the granite sentinal presides over a National Wildlife Refuge and is open to visitors. Farther south, you’ll see the Clay Head cliffs; below are coves and beaches where Manissean Indians lit fires that were noted by Italian explorer Verrazzano when he passed by the island in 1527.

Past a crescent-shaped beach lie the tiers of Victorian buildings, one peeking above another. The Old Harbor area is a designated National Historic District. It boasts cupolas, porches and gingerbread architecture, all built when an emerging tourist industry discovered this isolated community of fishermen 130 years ago.

Poised 12 miles offshore, the island was plundered by French pirates four times—in the late 1600s and early 1700s.

During the American Revolution, islanders were essentially defenseless. General George Washington ordered Yankee www.BlockIslandGuide.com

Islanders to move their cattle and sheep to the mainland so Colonial livestock did not become rations for British soldiers.

A generation later, in the War of 1812, the island chose neutrality, as did other coastal communities. During war campaigns resulting in the cannonading of U.S. towns, British soldiers refilled water kegs in island ponds and purchased supplies.

The island is still a safe haven, but now for visitors and their families who disembark on the island’s wonderful beaches to write their own history in sandcastles and barefoot walks.

Southeast Lighthouse. This immense redbrick beacon with gingerbread detail, a National Historic Landmark, nearly fell into the sea! Years of storms had eroded the adjacent sand and clay bluffs to the point that, in the 1980s, the 2,000-ton lighthouse sat precariously close to the edge of the 150-foot-high cliffs. A grassroots movement succeeded in securing funds to move the massive structure to safety in 1993. The exterior of the lighthouse was recently renovated. Work continues inside, where there is a small museum. π466-5009. †Weekends from Memorial Day, daily from late June to Labor Day, then weekends to Columbus Day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to museum/shop is free.

Escorted tower tours, as staffing permits, $10 adults, $5 seniors and children. From downtown, take Spring Street.

North Light. This granite beauty sits at the northernmost tip of Block Island. The isolated North Light was built in 1867 and now presides over the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge. The half-mile beach hike from the parking lot is well worth the effort. The museum inside tells the history of the lighthouse (and its predecessors) and explains the role of the wildlife refuge.

You will also learn about the tragic 1907 sinking of the steamer Larchmont, and numerous shipwrecks. Even if you don’t make the hike, the scenery is beautiful at the end of Corn Neck Road, where you can see the lighthouse from a distance. You’re sure to enjoy Sachem Pond, one of the most serene bodies of water imaginable (look for the swans and red-winged blackbirds). Settler’s Rock is also here (see pg.

Abrams’ Animal Farm. A collection of exotic and domestic animals is maintained by Justin Abrams, owner of the 1661 Inn & Hotel Manisses. The extensive hobby farm between Spring and High streets is home to llamas, emus, sheep, donkeys, goats, swans, ducks, even camels! They all live happily together on the hillside meadow south of the hotel. Visitors are free to view the animals here all year long. A wonderful attraction you won’t want to miss. Feed is available for the hungry goats and emus.†Accessible from Spring Street from dawn to dusk.

Island Cemetery. While not exactly an uplifting site-to-see, Block Island’s graveyard features interesting headstones dating back to the late 1600s and wonderful views to the east and north. At this well-maintained, sprawling resting place, not only will you recognize the names of quite a few long-standing Block Island families (Ball, Rose, Champlin), but you’ll also get a wonderful perspective on busy New Harbor. www.BlockIslandGuide.com

Mohegan Bluffs.

Mohegan Bluffs. The 150-foot cliffs along Mohegan Trail, the island’s southernmost road, are named for an Indian battle in which, lore has it, the local Manisses pinned down an attacking band of Mohegan Indians at the base of the bluffs.

From the top of the bluffs you can see Montauk Point, at the tip of Long Island, NY. At Payne Overlook, a few hundred yards west of the Southeast Lighthouse, stairs with more than 150 steps (count them!) descend to the beach below. For many visitors, the steps, the beach below and the trip back up are the most memorable aspect of their Block Island trip. (The “overlook” platform is closed because of erosion problems.)

Painted Rock.

center. Tour the mill and see specialty yarns being made from exotics like alpaca, yak, camel, bamboo, silk and merino. The facility also sells its wares: hand woven and hand knit garments and home décor items range from scarves and hats to rugs and throws. Knitting and felting classes daily for kids and adults.

Painted Rock. This little round stone looks bigger than it is—because it’s covered in hundreds and hundreds of layers of paint. Visitors and locals have for decades painted it to commemorate a long list of events: birthdays, visits, losses, holidays and more. At times it’s a barometer for public sentiment. This paintwork, at left, refers to B.I.’s annual resident headcount. A curious rock, indeed, and a real piece of the Block, at Mohegan Trail and Lakeside Drive.

Rodman’s Hollow. This unique ravine is a fine example of what’s called a glacial outwash basin (a remnant from the last ice age).

The hollow was the first piece of property purchased in the island’s 40-year tradition of land conservation, an effort that has succeeded in saving about 50 percent of the island from development. From the West Side Road trailhead, you can descend along winding pathways to the base of the hollow or hike to the south coast of the island to lie on the beach, below cliffs of clay. You can make this a short hike to the beach or a longer hike to Fresh Pond.

The Sacred Labyrinth. Off Corn Neck Road is a labyrinth of small stones, with a beautiful view of the North Light and Sachem Pond. The labyrinth, unlike a maze, is a single winding path that leads to the center point and back out.

Walking the labyrinth is a universal ritual that has survived unchanged for thousands of years.

People report that labyrinths can heal body and soul. It’s on the west side of the road, halfway down the hill to Sachem Pond. Look for wooden steps over the stone wall.

Settler’s Rock. At the northern end of Block Island you’ll find this granite marker on a pretty spit of land between Sachem Pond and Cow Cove, at the end of Corn Neck Road. The mo­nument lists the names of the island’s original English settlers and marks the spot where

She was erected in 1896 by the local Women’s Christian Temperance Movement, which hoped to curb the consumption of alcohol on Block Island. Aquidneck Island (officially named Rhode Island) is the biggest island in Narragansett Bay and home to legendary Newport. “Rhode” is believed (by some) to refer to the “Isle of Rhodes” (similar to BI in shape) in the Mediterranean.

Fishing Fishing is a big draw for Block Island.

From almost any Block Island beach, skilled anglers can land striped bass and bluefish. Fluke and flounder are often hooked in the New Harbor channel. Tautog and mackerel are also common. Offshore, the catch is striper, blues, tuna, sea bass and other species, depending on the season. Beaches A quiet morning on Crescent Beach.

Among this list of public beaches, Fred Benson Town Beach and Ballard’s have lifeguards, bathrooms, food and rentals.

Most are wonderfully primitive—carry in what you need; carry out what’s left (there are no rubbish barrels). On busy summer days, parking spaces fill up, so consider riding bikes, sharing rides, taking a cab or going early. Yield to caution when swimming or wading in high surf. Children are asked to stay off the dunes to preserve the beach grass.

Ballard’s Beach is backstopped by a restau- Black Rock is named after a large, dark rock rant with the same name. This deep-sand beach is located on the south side of the Old Harbor breakwater. Drinks are served by beachcombing waitstaff. Frequent live music at the restaurant is one draw for beachgoers. It is also an excellent setup for a deep-water swim. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer.

Fred Benson Town Beach has Block Island’s only fully equipped bathhouse and pavilion. It’s owned and operated by the town and staffed with lifeguards. Public restrooms, changing areas, hot showers ($2 per token). Rental items such as chairs, umbrellas and boogie boards.

Hot food, cold drinks. No admission fee. Free parking. Open weekends beginning Memorial Day; daily mid-June to Labor Day; weekends ‘til Sept. 15. Corn Neck Road. π401/466-7717.

hidden under 10 feet of water. The sinister rock has been the demise of many ships. You’ll want to hike or bike into this area; it’s not accessible by car. There are a couple of beaches at the base of the bluffs. While certainly not the best place for lying on the beach, sandy stretches can be found here. Stunning scenery. Black Rock is the end point of a few trails through Rodman’s Hollow.

Use caution when swimming; the surf can be very rough here.

Charlestown Beach is a sandy, peaceful beach that is popular with fishermen. The beach is quite large, and the waters are tranquil.

Beachgoers will find plenty of solitude. The jetty is an interesting walk. From here, you can watch boats entering New Harbor and get a look at the Coast Guard Station (where you’ll find parking).

It is a good beach to find collectible driftwood.

Walk soutward and you will reach Grace’s Cove.

Dorry’s Cove is a black-sand beach. It is small and generally uncrowded, with nice sunset views of Long Island. The waters are usually calm and access is easy, making this an excellent beach for swimming and snorkeling, and for picnics! Hike northward and you will approach a second cove, Grace’s Cove. Lots of interesting stones and driftwood here. The kids will enjoy this! Park carefully at the end of Dorry’s Cove Road, a dirt road off West Side Road. Good bike destination.

Scotch Beach is a quarter mile north of Fred

the south end of Crescent Beach. Here, kids can play in shallow waters, catch small crabs, find mussels, wrestle with seaweed, maybe even find a sand dollar. Adults can wade out for a peaceful swim while the kids play in the sand. This is the closest beach to town, which may be the primary reason so many adults bring their little ones here.

It’s also an easy walk from the ferry docks.

Benson Town Beach. It’s at the center of the larger Crescent Beach, which comprises the island’s eastern beachfront stretching from town to Jerry’s Point. There is a small parking lot off Corn Neck Road, but you can park along the road, north of Town Beach and hike marked trails over the dunes.

Bring a cooler, an umbrella and chairs, and dig in for the day. It’s a nice walk to Mansion Beach.

Conservation Groups Working on Block Island Block Island Conservancy

The Block Island Conservancy was established in 1972 to “maintain habitat for birds and animals, to protect the view of hills rolling to the sea, to provide walking trails and quiet recreation to islanders and visitors.” BIC is a private nonprofit with a 12-person volunteer board of directors. π466-3111.

Block Island Land Trust

The Block Island Land Trust is a municipal conservation organization created by stateenabling legislation in 1986 and funded by a 3-percent transfer fee on island real estate transactions. The BILT has five trustees elected by town voters. Its mission is “to protect ecologically sensitive areas, open space and land for agricultural use, preserve

view sheds, and provide recreational opportunities.” π466-3207.

The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy was founded in 1951 “to preserve plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.”

TNC, an international nonprofit, has been working on Block Island since the 1970s and maintains an office and visitors center on High Street.

Other conservation organizations with a presence on Block Island include the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. π466-2129.

The Maze. Kids are a-mazed by this tangle Kid Beach. As the name indicates, this beach of interconnected trails. Follow Clay Head Trail (pg. 72) and take your pick of trails running to the west. They dip, wind and climb. You may get lost!

But not for long. (Wear shoes that can get wet.)

Hiking The North Light is in the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Despite having just 10 square miles of land, Block Island features an amazing number of ­excellent short hikes.

In fact, hiking may be the most popular activity on the island. A well-maintained trail system stretches across the island. These 25 miles of walking trails, or Greenway Trails, feature access points marked with small granite monoliths. Hiking trails are described below and can be seen on the center-page map. The Nature Conservancy sells detailed maps at its office on High Street, but these trails are well marked, so go take a hike!

Trail Hikes Clay Head Trail and The Maze. Some of the island’s best views are along Clay Head Trail. A half mile into the trail, walkers will find an intersection.

Right will take you to a wonderful sandy beach; left will lead you along the picturesque bluffs. At the top of the trail is an area informally known as “The Maze,” where walkers can wander through interconnected, unmarked pathways. To explore The Maze, just take any path heading westward; it’s a fascinating area. If you are short on time, be mindful of your turns, as you can get lost.

Elizabeth Dickens Trail. This trail is named after “the bird lady” of Block Island, who taught ornithology and natural history to BI school children and is credited with instilling Block Island’s conservation ethic. The trail traverses open fields that run to the edge of the bluffs. The trailhead is not easy to find. Turn onto the dirt road (Dickens Road) at the west end of Cooney­mus Road. Take your second left onto a narrow dirt lane and continue for an eighth of a mile. There is a small parking area.

To reach the trailhead: Take the marked dirt Fresh Swamp Trail. A combination of trees road heading east off Corn Neck Road. The road is opposite a big farm house, three miles from the four-way intersection in town, where Corn Neck Road begins. The parking lot and trailhead are at the end of this bumpy dirt road.

and open fields makes this trail a good place to observe such raptors as the northern harrier. The quiet scenery is invigorating. The trail begins east of Fresh Pond; look for wooden steps heading over a stone wall.

Be mindful of ticks. Deer ticks, common on B.I., can transmit Lyme disease to humans. Check for these small pests after your hike.

Long pants and long sleeves will help keep them off your skin.

Fresh Pond Greenway. This area is called Hodge Family Preserve. At the north end of “Smilin’ Thru” and inspired the 1920s song composed by Arthur Penn, who stayed on the island before creating the popular tune. Walkers should be prepared for steep slopes and some tricky footing.

The trail starts on Lakeside Drive near the intersection with Cooneymus Road, and heads west along the shore of Fresh Pond. This trail links to Rodman’s Hollow. Recommended: take this trail to Rodman’s Hollow, then south to Black Rock.

The Greenway. Inspired by the Greenway trails of England, the Block Island Greenway includes 15 miles of cleared trails winding through the southern half of the island. Nathan Mott Park, the Enchanted Forest, Turnip Farm and Rodman’s Hollow can all be accessed via the Greenway trail system. Starting points can be found on Lakeside Drive, and along Old Mill, Cooneymus, West Side and Beacon Hill roads. Look for granite Greenway markers, turnstyles and steps over stone walls.

Corn Neck Road is this picturesque 25-acre field sloping to Middle Pond and West Beach. The property was acquired for conservation in 2002 and is jointly owned and managed by the town, The Nature Conservancy, the BI Land Trust and the Block Island Conservancy. Walkers and others engaging in passive recreation are welcome.

A small, road dirt parking lot is available for visitors, along the roadside, at the high-point of the preserve.

Rodman’s Hollow. This dramatic hollow drops below sea level and features panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean as well as access to the beach. Owned and protected by the Block Island Conservancy, Rodman’s Hollow is a memorable hike. This “glacial outwash basin” is B.I.’s first preserved piece of land. Enter the hollow from Cooneymus Road, where a dirt road (Black Rock Road) leads to a wooden turnstile at the trailhead.

Beach Hikes

Some of the island’s best hikes are along its beaches. You can hike around the entire island in approximately eight hours. Start at any beach, and walk as far as you’d like. There are two breaks in the shoreline: the New Harbor Channel and the ferry landing in Old Harbor.

Hike the Roads

The West Side loop is gorgeous. Begin in New Harbor. From Payne’s Dock you can look across the harbor to see a spit of land called Beane Point. Owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department, this area is important to migrating birds and is part of the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge, which also encompasses the North Light.

Proceed west along West Side Road.

One-half mile down the road is the Island Cemetery. From atop this hill of passed souls, you can see the North Light and the Rhode Island coast: on a clear day, look for the gigantic Newport Bridge at 40 degrees east; it spans the eastern passage of Narragansett Bay. ponds. You can get some beach time by turning right onto Dorry’s Cove Road or Cooneymus Beach Road; both dead-end at the island’s tranquil west shore.

One mile from Dorry’s Cove, West Side Road jogs to the left, where it becomes Cooneymus Road. A half mile farther along, you’ll see Rodman’s Hollow, a deep ravine on your right. Cooneymus Road next veers sharply to the left and passes Fresh Pond. At the next intersection, turn left onto Center Road and walk downhill to the State Airport. To get back to town, turn right on Old Town Road; to return to New Harbor, continue on Center Road and go right onto West Side Road.

Amtrak (π800/872-7245) has three stations relatively close to Block Island. In New London, Conn., the high-speed Block Island Express ferry docks next to the Amtrak station. From the Westerly Amtrak station, mainland taxis get you to the Westerly Airport, where New England Airlines offers regularly scheduled flights to BI (see right column). Another stop, West Kingston, is a 15-minute cab ride to the ferry docks in Galilee. Mainland taxi service information can be found on pg. 86.

New England Airlines. The quickest way to get to Block Island is to fly New England Airlines. The 12-minute trip is the preferred means of travel for many locals. Flights depart hourly in summer. Vehicle reservations should be made in advance.

Passenger tickets may be purchased online or at the ticket window on the day of departure. Allow yourself enough time to park, purchase tickets and get on board. There are numerous daily departures during the summer season (see full schedule pg. 4). Schedule and rates are subject to change. Fuel surcharge may apply. This seasonal, passenger-only ferry service from Galilee is the quickest ferry run to Block Island. The voyage to Old Harbor aboard the catamaran Athena takes approximately 30 minutes. Passenger space is limited and reservations are recommended. The ferry departs Galilee three to six times daily (see full schedule pg. 5). The one-way adult fare is $19, roundtrip $35.85. The child’s fare (ages 4-12) one-way is $11.75, roundtrip $19.50. Infants (ages 3 & under) one-way $7, $12 roundtrip. Includes fuel surcharge. The Block Island Ferry and the Hi-Speed Ferry leave for Block Island from the Port of Galilee, in the fishing village of Galilee, Rhode Island. However, in ferry schedules and in common parlance, the ferry’s mainland destination is usually called Point Judith, which is actually a few miles east of the Port of Galilee. There are four large parking lots to choose from in Galilee.

Rental Cars on Block Island To avoid the cost ($50-plus) and time required to put a car on the ferry, consider renting a car on Block Island. A variety of car types are available, by the week or by the day. Call ahead to reserve your ride; demand is high in late summer. Block Island

Real Estate There are approximately 1,600 homes across Block Island’s 7,040 acres. The number of homes available in any given price range is always limited. Many potential buyers have spent years waiting for an island home that’s right for them. Even these discerning buyers generally agree that it’s a buyer’s market currently.

With each real estate sale there is a 3‑percent fee, payable to the Block Island Land Trust.

The transfer fee was established by the town and empowered by the state legislature to preserve undeveloped lands and protect Block Island’s aquifer.

One interesting aspect of the Block Island economy is its “cottage industry” of weekly rentals.

More than 400 homes are rented for 12 weeks (more or less) each summer. Rates for these homes range from $1,200 to more than $6,000 per week.
