Keep Away!

By Kids X-Press Reporter Silvia Hanna My friends made up a game called “keep away.” It’s a fun but simple game and all you need to play, is a basketball and at least four people. Here’s how you play: 1. Split up into 2 groups 2. Decide who gets the ball first. 3. The other team(s) chase the person with the ball, and try to get the ball. The person with the ball is allowed to try to throw the ball to his/her teammates. (However they are not allowed to sit or lay on the floor unless someone accidentally pushes them.) 4. At the end of the game (when the time you decided the game would end comes), the team with the ball wins.

Sports that help you get into shape By Kids X-Press Reporter Jorge Magarin

4

These are just two sports that I like, but there are varieties of different sports and activities that you can do to stay healthy and in shape. Find the one that you like the most, and remember to have fun.

Hi, I’m Jorge and I want to talk to you about two sports that will get you in good shape. The first sport is baseball. This is, without a doubt, my favorite sport. When we practice, we do things such as running the bases and practice tracking down fly balls. These are great cardio exercises. These exercises also help your brain, as good reaction skills are good to have to hit and catch the ball. They also help your hand-eye coordination. Playing baseball will help you get stronger, as long as you keep practicing. Another sport is basketball. Just like baseball, basketball is a good cardio workout. During practice you run from one side of the court to the other – sometimes while dribbling the ball. This is good for your legs, as well as hand-eye coordination. It will strengthen your legs, arms and mind as you play and practice.

The East Side win

Track Life

Once upon a time, I went to see East Side baseball. My cousin was number 13 and she made a home run! I was so proud of her, I promised I would buy her the world, but I can’t. She made me want to buy her everything -I tried but again I couldn’t. (Back to the story.) Her team won, so we had a feast. There were sausages, chicken nuggets, toys and big piles of water bottles. It was so awesome that I thought I would explode. Her team actually invited all of us to the party. Now that’s all folks.

Just face it – track is one of the best sports in the world. I am talking about how fun and exciting track can be. At the same time, track can be a very difficult sport. When I started track, it was a little difficult for me, but I picked it up quickly. I just needed to get my body used to it, because I was already fast. That made it easy for me. During practice we start with four laps around the track, for warm-ups. After that, we stretch and go on with practice. We start with three 400m, three 300m and three 200m. We get a five minute break between every 3 laps we do. We sometimes practice baton passing. We finally end practice with a 400m. The most difficult part about track was learning how to pass the baton. You have to time how to receive or pass the baton. I have traveled to many places to compete – the Bronx, Rockland, Pennsylvania, and Mount Vernon. I have raced against many fast and talented kids. The events that I race in are the 200m, 100m, 55m and sometimes the 400m. I have won some races, and lost a few as well. Track is a great sport. Give it a chance and try out.

My First Mets Game By Kids X-Press Reporter Quandel Jacobs

My Uncle took me to my first Mets game and we had lots of fun! They were playing the Yankees and we had really good seats. It was the first time I saw the Mets play live at a stadium. My favorite baseball player is David Wright. He serves as captain and third basemen for the NY Mets. D. Wright played well during the game. Even though I had fun, I’d much rather watch the game on T.V. because if I get bored I can just change the channel.

Basketball

By Kids X-Press Reporter Raseim Smith Hi Readers. My name is Raseim Smith. I love to play basketball. I'm only 4'10 and I can make a half court shot. I'm not on a basketball team but if I was I would love to be team captain. My favorite players are LeBron James, J.R. Smith, Stephen Curry, and the main man Micheal Jordan. My favorite teams are the Golden State Warriors Brooklyn Nets, and the Miami Heat. My fantasy team would be Lebron James, Stephen Curry, and J.R. Smith

KXP Storytellers

By Kids X-Press Reporter NeTonia Holliman

One day, the twins were walking through town. Mogli was getting frustrated at the people laughing and staring at him. They got to the end of the street and he noticed something that he had not before, a fitness gym. “Nala! Nala! Look, a gym. Let’s go check it out.” Mogli shouted with excitement. Then Nala replied “No way! I’m not going in there with a bunch of big losers. Ha! Get it? They’re big and losers.” Mogli then reminded her of her recent past by saying, “Well not so long ago you were one of those ‘big losers’, but now since you’velost weight you think that you are better than everyone else.” There was a long pause before Nala broke the silence. “I don’t think I’m better than anyone. I just have a sense of confidence now because I actually got off my behind and decided to make a change in my life. I will never regret that, no matter what.” Nala said, with salty waterfalls streaming down her face. “Well today is the day that I want to change my life and be more confident. I’m going do it whether you help me or not.”

6

Mogli stated firmly. “Bro, you have to remember, it’s not all about being physically active and fit. You have to eat the right foods and the right amounts.” Nala said, giving her brother a sense of encouragement. Mogli stared at his blue eyed sister, tears still slowly falling down her face, and said, “I’m willing to do whatever it takes, let’s get started!” Illustration by NeTonia Holliman

Once upon a time, in a magical land far, far away, there was a set of twins. One was a boy named Mogli and his younger sister’s name was Nala. They were only 23 seconds apart. They were 17 years old, and some might assume that since they were twins that they were supposed to be the same size. Those people would be absolutely incorrect because Nala was much smaller than her brother. Mogli was what you would consider obese. Everywhere they went people noticed Nala before they did Mogli. She had a flat stomach and a small waist. They only noticed her because of her looks, but failed to recognize her bad attitude. Mogli always felt like an outsider. His size upset him because he never got as much attention as his slim sister.

A Comedy

By Kids X-Press Reporter Yania Fair Hello my name is Yania and I am going to be writing about a something funny that made me laugh. One time long ago when I was in school, I had a teacher that was named Mr. Boyd. It all started when we were watching a movie. The movie was called Beethoven. My teacher showed the movie because we had to do a movie review. While we were watching the movie, Mr. Boyd was handing out ice cream. After that he went to sit down in his chair, but his chair was not there so he fell. He fell on the classroom floor and everyone was laughing (he did not get hurt; we made sure he was okay). But the funniest part was when my friend Marcella was laughing, she laughed so hard that her face turned as red as a fire truck. It was funny. And that was the funniest comedy!

extraordinary. And I am sure that most of you agree when I say, that Kids X-Press paves the path for children to do just so. This magazine allows for kids to feel like more than just a kid. It allows for us to feel like authors, journalists, poets, artists, and most importantly, it reminds us that we have the ability to accomplish anything as long as we believe in ourselves and put our minds to it. My journey of writing for Kids X-Press began in the Spring of 2012, when I was just in 7th grade. I started off minute, testing myself with a poem. I soon became more comfortable as I wrote informative and argumentative pieces, exposing my opinion on gun control, global warming and more. With each published piece, I grew more and more confident in my writing, in my capability, and in myself. It is an absolute pleasure to be standing here today, in front of the people who make it all possible. Together, we look forward to a better and brighter future with Kids X-Press. Thank You.

What’s Cooking? Pizza is Chemistry

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Baking By Kids X-Press Reporter Chiara Ochoa

I like to make chocolate chip cookies with either my mom or my aunt. When we make cookies we need eggs, flour, sugar, butter and chocolate chips. We put everything in a big bowl. We mix it until everything is smooth. My mother and I bake in the kitchen, before dinner. We make them before dinner, so we can eat them for dessert. After putting them in the oven we put the cookies in the fridge for about 5 minutes to cool. When they are small we have 2 or 3, but when they are big we have 1 or 2.

Sometimes I cook with my mom. I love cooking with my mom. When we make a big chocolate cake we use eggs, oil, water and cake mix. Then we put it in the oven. After we take it out of the oven, my mom and I eat the big chocolate cake.

By Kids X-Press Reporter Rayonna Johnson I like to make pizza with my mom and dad. We start with Jamaican dough. I spread it out with a roller. Next we add the sauce. Our special Jamaican cheese goes on next this cheese is called Tastee Cheese. Then we add the toppings. I like bacon, pepperoni and jalapeños. We put it in the oven. When it’s all done we eat it; making pizza is chemistry!

Watermelon Omelets By Kids X-Press Reporter Tishawn Blackwell My mom and I like to make omelets on Thursdays. To make an omelet you need eggs, mushrooms, watermelon and cheese. You crack the eggs onto a plate and mix in the mushrooms and melon. Now put everything in a frying pan and cook it. Put the omelet on a plate and eat it.

Chocolate with Joselin

I’d like to create a new dessert. It would have chocolate cream, with a vanilla crust and chocolate sprinkles. There would be raspberries and whipped cream on top. I’d name my dessert “Chocolate” by Joselin. It would be delicious!

Jordans

By Kids X-Press Reporter Tyonna Kelley Jordans are my favorite sneakers. They are really cute and stylish. Not all of the Jordans are cute, mainly the # 3s and #12s. Those are my favorite Jordans. They are the best looking ones in my opinion. One word to describe a pair of Jordans is “colorful” because there are lots of colors and designs on them. That’s what makes them look pretty and different. When I get Jordans I make sure I get the most outstanding Jordans because I want to stand out in crowd. When a person sees your sneakers and asks you where you got them from, you’re actually helping the store get more business. When I get older, I would love to help design sneakers because most of the time that’s the main thing people look at. You can’t wear just any sneakers with any outfit. If I could, I would help people dress, because that’s what I’m good at. When I turn into an adult and you need help getting ready for an event, you can always count on me!

Fashion girl By Kids X-Press Reporter Taniya Drakeford

I am proud of myself for being a fashion girl. I like dresses, skirts, jeans, shirts and belts. I like pretty colors like pink and purple. I like red because my mother likes it. I like hearts on my shirts, skirts and dresses. I like to wear my dresses outside. I like to wear my regular clothes outside, too.

Hi Taniya, Do you think I’m a fashion Piggy? This is my Winter look!

KXP-On-Call An Interview with Henrik Lundqvist, Professional Athlete and Humanitarian By KXP-On-Call Reporter Jalen Sermon, Matthew Gordineer, KXP Cinematographer and Sandy Aitchison, KXP Photographer. Growing up with I read that your kindergarten teachers would freeze the sand pit so that you could practice your ice skating. Yes, that's where we started. Growing up in a town where it's pretty cold, we would skate on lakes and eventually rinks were built outside our town. Was this always what you wanted to do as an adult? Who would you say inspired you the most; your father or your teachers? At the age of 7, I started dreaming about hockey and it’s stood out to me. I also played soccer, but hockey was number one. Sports are extremely important to me and are my life. The teachers inspired us as they played the game themselves. I believe watching it on TV inspired me a lot too. I loved watching the game and I wanted to be like them. With my brother having the same dream, we inspired each other. We worked hard and we stayed determined to see how far we could go. My dad wasn't big into hockey, but he inspired us by showing us his support and teaching us different things.

a twin brother helped me because he is my best friend and we had the same hobbies. What do you enjoy more; being a music artist or a professional athlete? Hockey is always number one! Music is a hobby and it really helps me to relax. It helps me get away from hockey a little bit. Hockey is number one when it comes to my focus and attention. When did you learn how to play the guitar? I had a guitar teacher at a young age. These days it's easier to go online and teach yourself how to play. Back then we didn’t have the internet so I had an instructor for a few years. Who is your favorite music artist/group/ genre? I like a lot of different types of music. I like John Mayer because he's a great performer. I listen to the Foo Fighters, that's a little more rock. I enjoy the blues and I listen to the radio a lot. I enjoy listening to a lot of different music.

What made you become a spokesman for the Garden of Dreams Foundation? Did this foundation influence or inspire you to start your own foundation? I came to New York about ten years ago and I immediately got involved with the Garden of Dreams Foundation. I did different events to help children and supported many causes. I tried to make a difference there and it inspired me to begin my own foundation. I was so honored when they chose me to be the spokesperson. The first few years inspired me to want to make a difference. Making a difference grew on me, and I wanted to do more to help others. What is your biggest challenge playing hockey? Consistency! We play a lot of games so we always try to do our best. I like to get prepared and focus before I play a game. It takes a lot of dedication and focus. I read that you use the “Butterfly technique”. Can you please elaborate on what the “Butterfly style” is? It’s hard to explain. In ice hockey, the butterfly style is a technique of goaltending distinguished by the goaltender guarding the lower part of the net by dropping to the knees to block attempts to score. The butterfly style derives its name from the resemblance of the spread goal pads and hands to a butterfly's wings. What is your greatest accomplishment? One of my greatest accomplishments was making it to New York and playing in the NHL.

Lundqvist explaining the butterfly technique.

Jalen and Henrik pose for a quick selfie! Having daughters and my family is a new chapter in my life. Raising children gives my life a broader perspective. Who inspired your passion for fashion? Who is your favorite designer as of 2015? I don’t really have one. I just go with the trends and I like looking good. My sense of style came by trial and error because there are a lot of different styles in New York. I tried a different look and it works. I made a lot of mistakes and learned from them. Did you get drafted by or did you come here on your own? I was drafted by the New York Rangers, but I didn’t play immediately. I played in Sweden for five more years before I came to New York and signed a contract. Education, proper health for families and children in NYC, Sweden, and the Dominican Republic. What would you like to change in these locations? I plan to provide books, support and try to make a difference in all of these locations. I just want to support these different areas, assist and give back as much as I can. What’s one thing you would tell young people that are hoping to become an athlete? Choose what you want, but find yourselves. It’s important to have dreams. I have a big question for kids today. What inspires you? Discover what inspires you and make the most of it.

Vine a Nueva York hace unos diez años y enseguida me involucré con Garden of Dreams Foundation.

Each age group had a different focus for their day. The elementary school students focused on chemistry and nutrition, while middle schoolers focused on genetics, the high schoolers were put in different groups that focused on different parts in the field of science, including Research, Bioinformatics, Journalism, Graphics, and Business. The middle schoolers worked with DNA extraction and Dr. Croll said that, “I love watching the middle schoolers extract DNA it’s such an elusive concept and then they’re standing there holding it.”

Third-grader Gabrielle Fitzgerald smiled and laughed as she cut the tiny Skittle candy in half, opening up the gummy, sugary center. The point of this project, and Regeneron’s 6th annual Kids’ Science Day, was to use everyday objects to explain science. “I just watched the candy change in water,” Gabrielle said. “It was a lot of fun.” Kids’ Day has grown from 25 kids in the early days to about 500 this year. Susan D. Croll, PhD., Director, Neuroscience and Postdoctoral Program and Kids’ Day lead said her greatest joy is, “Looking at the smile and the light in the kid’s eyes discovering something new about science.” It’s really important to show kids early that science is a lot of fun before they hit those hard terrible science courses before high school. I want to show them that joy before they hit that.

Regeneron Kids’ Day 2015

By Regeneron Student Reporter Aaliyah Demitro

Q: How long did it take you to become a scientist? A: In high school I leaned toward science classes. Then I went to college for four years, then after that I did a PhD. that took five years, then I had to do something called a post doc that took another five years. Q: Wow, that’s impressive! Do you have any advice for kids that want to be a scientist? A: Find something that interests you and something you’re passionate about. It’s a long road but it’s very rewarding. You can apply curiosity to problems and help better the world.

The people here at Regeneron are really great, and really smart. It’s great to see activities like Kids’ Day help motivate students in the sciences. It’s a very cool day, and a very cool place to work.

Q: When did you know you wanted to be a scientist A: I knew I wanted to be a scientist at a very early age. I always had a curious mind and I think it gave my parents a headache. For one of my first “experiments,” I saved eraser shavings from all my pencils and was going to melt them together into a giant eraser on my Mom’s stove. She was not happy!

Q: What’s your favorite part about your job? A: I’m constantly working to solve problems. It’s really fun to do new things all the time, and fun to learn and challenge yourself.

Learn how food is broken up in the stomach with this easy at-home experiment. Elementary school kids at the 6th annual Regeneron Kids’ Day event were entertained by a wacky and whimsical way of learning how the stomach works, and what happens to your food after you eat it. Here’s how you can do the experiment at home:

Materials • Chocolate graham crackers

• Water

Procedure The chocolate graham crackers simulate the food. The water simulates the saliva, and the lemon juice simulates stomach acid. 1. Open the Ziploc bag and place the graham crackers in it. 2. Close the Ziploc bag. 3. Crush the crackers (simulating chewing). 4. Open bag, and pour in water (simulating saliva). 5. Continue to crush the mixture. 6. Pour in lemon juice (simulates acid in the stomach). 7. Continue to crush. 8. Cut a corner off the bag. 9. Get a plate and squeeze out the product. The result is a really nasty looking chocolate poop! The elementary school students at Kids’ Day loved it. “I liked this activity because it showed us how our poop works, and we played with chocolate!” Second grader David explained. “I would love to be a scientist when I grow up!”

• Wet hands and apply soap. • Rub together to create lots of bubbles, either sing the Happy Birthday song 2 times or count to 30 potatoes. • Rinse well. • Dry with paper towels, and try not to use hand drying machines. The forced air lets small bacteria out that have the potential to make you sick.

All experiments should be done with adult supervision.

Dream

By Gerson Tigua, School of Information and Technology What is life?

By Chad Matthews, School of Information and Technology

The four letter word That no one can completely explain What’s to be? The feeling of And the emotions it brings Of this lie that was given to me Like a difficult math problem Is it just another illusion my mind can’t see? That only you and time can solve together An unknown emotion that can I think of all the things I want to be, And swiftly divert our mood But all the things I want never come to me. From happy to sad In the blink of an eye What is life? Like the feeling a first time mother gets What’s to be? When she first lays eyes on her new born Did it all really begin from an apple in a tree? Beholding her own lovely creation So overwhelmed with words that she is In this life I’ve come to see speechless My reality is nothing but a dream. A heartless, ironic emotion That hurts without hesitance But can still be The only reason to hold on

I practice touching my bones.

Blossom In front of my eyes. I stumble, Losing my balance.

She sets another plate on the table And stares at me.

Early mornings, I roll onto my back And lay silent and still As a prodding finger slides up my ribs

(stay strong) (it’ll pass) (stay strong) (stay strong)

Admiring the way The bones Roll under my fingers Like the bars of a steel birdcage.

As I teeter down the stairs, I hold my breath. The smell of butter Has the power to suffocate.

I shift a little on the floorboards, My feet squeak against the cheap wood. I can guess what she’s thinking Normal girls don’t do this.

I hike the frothy blankets to my chin And think This is what it feels like to be dead.

Breakfast is on the table, But I don’t look at it, I don’t breathe it in…

And I let myself decay. Shed my skin, which peels Like rubber from a rotten tire.

And I most definitely don’t Sit down Because I’d rather not Feel my thighs Ooze from underneath me Like pancake batter Or pizza dough.

The pearly hill caps of my knees, The dips and valleys of my hips.

I want to be clean. I feel my bones pressing into the mattress, Jutting swords/scissor blades, The armor of a dead girl. Then my hands Wander down to my thighs, Snapping me back to reality (too fast) Where I can roll An inch Of skin Between my fingers If I pinch hard enough. (too fat) (always too fat) Outside, the sky turns honey-amber, Rotting, Roiling. The smell of baking pavement Is ripe in my throat. I throw back the blankets. As I stand, Colorful mold spores

That’s when Momma walks through the doorway. She sees me standing there. Sees the way my t-shirt Hangs from my shoulders. See the way my legs Bow inwards. (still) (so fat) (never thin) (enough)

The heat is suffocating.

But who am I to argue? I am not a normal girl. I am a fawn, a fae, Encased in wax. The wax presses against my wire frame, Crushes my bones together, Stills my frantic heart. (if only) Once the wax melts, I will be light enough To float From my fingertips. I will be effervescent. But Momma doesn’t know that (I’ll never be thin enough) My breath crawls into my throat And roosts there. I wonder if I should leave the room. I wonder if I should say anything At all.

I avert my eyes To the monstrous orchids Which crane graceful green necks Through the open window. Not her. Anything but her.

Hey dude, Is this yours?

Coney Island Beach By Kids X-Press Reporter Emy Hanna Illustration by Emy Hanna

On the beach I had so much fun. In the sand I made sand castles and in then I put a seashell in the front that I found in the water. When I went in the water and put on sunscreen it was cold. When I moved a lot in the water it felt better. When the waves pushed me, salt from the water went in my mouth. Don’t worry there were lifeguards and the waves were calm. It was so much fun on Coney Island beach!

Frozen Movie Review By Kids X-Press Reporter Emy Hanna

I loved Frozen because when went to Pre-K my cousins showed the whole movie and I loved it so much. It was about when 2 sisters. One sister doesn’t want to freeze her sister again like when they were little. 26

On February third and fourth, I played the role “Maria” in the Sound of Music. I had the main role. You see, every year the fifth grade puts on a musical for the whole school and parents to watch. I auditioned by acting and singing and I got the main character! It took a lot of practice and rehearsals. However; it was A LOT of FUN! Everybody congratulated me at the end. The musical is a memory I will never forget.

Hey Emy, I watched that movie and I loved it too!
