“There’s nothing to do in Tri-Cities!”

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard that phrase…

When I started Kid’s Play Magazine five years ago, this was one of my main goals: dispel the myth that there’s nothing to do here. That’s the driving force behind our family events calendar each issue.

There ARE things to do here, you just have to know where to look for them.

So that’s what we did- My assistant and I (we’re the Jennifer and Jennifer team:), have spent months combing the Tri-Cities for cool things to do this summer. You’ll find our list on page 16 of this issue.

I have to say I’m pretty proud of it.

Did you know Tri-Cities boasts four different interpretive centers? I didn’t. I knew we had one, the REACH (which we featured last fall), but I had no idea about the other three.

Did you know there’s a BMX racetrack out at Horn Rapids where you can go watch races for free?

Again, I was oblivious. How cool would that be to make an evening activity out of?

Did you know that the CBC planetarium is open to the public and shows movies on the ceiling? It’s as close to an Imax as we’ve got right now.

We’ve got fish ladders that you can watch, hydro-electric generating stations you can tour, wildlife preserves to explore, performing arts to take in, a national monument you can visit, walkways and pathways and hikes. Mini golf, and Frisbee golf, and kayaking opportunities, art galleries, farmer’s markets, and ice skating. And that’s not even including all the calendar events we list.

LEGOS:

Enemy to barefooted night walkers, friend to visionary future engineers.

I love to build things, especially IKEA furniture. To take a box of pieces and see it turn into a table or bookshelf or whatever is incredibly gratifying. I’ve also convinced my hubby to let me borrow his power tools on occasion to build decks, benches, and flower boxes. When people remark on this obsession I just shrug my shoulders and say “I played with Legos as a kid!”

When I was playing with Legos they weren’t nearly as cool as they are today. But I can tell you the difference between pneumatic and hydraulic power and how gear ratios work, all thanks to a bunch of little plastic building kits that “technically” belonged to my brothers.

That’s the cool thing about Legos, for several generations of kids, little plastic bricks and pieces have been encouraging imaginations, developing problem solving techniques, helping kids follow directions, and a whole bunch of other useful skills. So much so that many schools utilize brick play in their S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs and Sylvan Learning Center has whole summer camps based around learning and building with Legos.

Summer Learning Loss is a buzzword this time of year, but brick play can actually help combat that slump and keep kids’ minds engaged over the summer break. Becoming engrossed in a box of bricks can help kids think three dimensionally, develop problem solving and critical thinking skills, hone fine motor development, encourage creativity and imagination, and recognize patterns and sequencing.

So what are we talking about here? When we say Legos, what do we mean, and where can you get them? Walking the toy isle at the store, parents are bombarded with dozens of different play sets, from bags of the standard blocks, to intricate themed kits; and while the themed kits are cool, there’s only so much learning that comes from following enclosed assembly instructions. Most of the learning we are referring to takes place when kids follow their imagination and have to problem solve in order to build their creations. Lots and lots of bricks work best for this task, though some specialty pieces definitely help make the job more interesting. If you’re wanting to build your brick collection, look for bags of bricks on Amazon, or visit the Pick a Brick shop on Lego.com (which sells pieces individually). Also keep an eye out at yard sales and second hand shops, when kids age out of Legos (which we could argue should never happen:) families often donate their collections or sell them for super cheap at yard sales.

And what about those S.T.E.M. concepts we mentioned earlier? Legos and robotics go hand in hand.

There are many kits and classes out there that teach kids basic programming with bricks. You’ll usually see at least one of these exhibits at your school science fair, it’s the booth with all the kids standing around it. Kids can learn to use pneumatic (air powered) cylinders, or simple gear ratios to power their machines and discover the importance of sequencing as they program their robots to move. Kids can take this knowledge to the next level with competitions in the First Lego League. First Lego League is an international competition where teams of kids are challenged to build robotic contraptions and with their inventions judged on functionality, ingenuity, and the teamwork it took to create them.

Engineers, architects, inventors, programmers: many professional fields pull from the skills learned with these tiny little bricks. And the best part, the kids practically teach themselves. Next time you have to pry your kids away from the lego box, smile a little and pat yourself on the back; “you go Mom and Dad, way to enable imagination!” :)

Eyes for Ethiopia

By Dylan Way, age 13 Editor’s Note: I’ve always wanted to feature a story by a local youth, but had never found the right story. When Dylan approached me before his trip and described what they were going to do, I knew this was it. Thank you to Dylan for sharing his experience with us, and for his willingness to serve his community, both near and far. We’re proud to share this story.

Never let anyone tell you a kid can’t make a difference in the world!

I have had several opportunities to volunteer and give back to the Tri-Cities over the years because of my Dad’s involvement in Rotary and other things. Most of the time I like the work and the reward for making a positive impact. He also takes me to several of the meetings where they have speakers that are usually boring. One time was very different.

Dr. James Guzek (Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute, Kennewick) was giving a presentation about a mission in Ethiopia.

He puts together a team of doctors and other helpers to provide cataract surgeries to blind people in rural Ethiopia. I was very interested in the presentation from the beginning.

Probably because part of the story was that an elderly blind person would often times use a child in the family to act as their seeing eye dog. The child would no longer go to school or play with the other children. I really liked the idea of helping two people with one surgery and will always remember that presentation.

A couple years later, Dr. Guzek invited me and my dad to go on one of the trips to Ethiopia. My dad sad yes for both of us and I decided to not argue. I was nervous and not sure I wanted to participate. Now that I am back, I am very glad we went.

We were gone for 15 days. Eight of those days were for travel. My job in Ethiopia, at the clinic, was to lead patients in and out of the prep room. I would then hold a light for the anesthesiologist while he numbed the back of the patient’s eye. On an average surgery day, we’d arrive at the clinic to a very large crowd of people waiting. We’d immediately go to work. There were about 50-60 surgeries every day. Helping with the surgeries was very interesting and cool. I liked knowing I was playing an important role.

Watching the needle go through the skin and behind the eye was fascinating. I wasn’t grossed out like my dad. I was intrigued by the process and the steps it took to have a successful surgery.

The people of Ethiopia were very interesting. They were stoic and serene and happy with what they had. Even though there were hundreds of patients waiting for surgery, they were very patient and friendly. The kids were friendly as well. Sometimes too friendly. They wanted to hug and touch a lot. Even though they had very little in their lives, compared to American kids, they really seemed happy and content. One evening I watched one of the girls at the girl’s home playing with a few rocks. It was really cool watching her use little pebbles to play the game “jacks”. I didn’t know the game, but my dad said he remembered playing when he was a kid. It was really fun and didn’t require any money to play. Then I surprised her with a Frisbee. Her friends spent hours playing catch and they really enjoyed their new toy, except when it landed on the roof.

This trip really helped me understand myself and another culture. I am very happy I went and will keep this experience with me forever. I still plan to volunteer and help the world be a better place, but I might wait a few years for a project as big as this one was.

It really feels good to make a difference and I hope other kids like me find ways to help others as well.

Summertime is practically made for relaxing with a good book., and we’ve found some great ones for you!

We are excited to review several new children’s works from talented authors who call the Tri-Cities home.

Red Butterfly

By A. L. Sonnichsen

I picked this book up and intended to sit down and take 30 minutes to check it out. I closed the back cover and looked up at the clock 3 HOURS LATER. This storyline is completely engrossing and more than a little enchanting.

The story is about a girl in China who doesn’t understand why her Amercan mother refuses to leave the apartment and keeps them both in hiding. She learns of her history, survives the deportation of the only parent she’s ever known, and journeys through the adoption process and orphanage life, to finally end with a family in the United States.

The book is written in poetic form which is completely captivating and makes for very easy reading. The author, A. Sonnichsen, lived through a similar journey which lends such credibility and emotion to the story. I highly recommend it, both for kids and adults.

Halley’s Hoodie

This is the second book in the Nosey Parker’s series (we featured the first title, Happy Go Lucky in the Winter 2012 issue of Kid’s Play). The Nosey Parkers’ adventures help kids understand injuries and disabilities. (The Happy Go Lucky book follows a pup through an injury and learning to use a wheelchair.)

Halley is the story of a beautiful show dog who suddenly faces an illness and loses her hair (cancer). Halley’s friends rally and create her a beautiful hoodie to wear.

AJ’s Ireland

readers. This book is hilarious. It’s the story of a large

family’s (somewhat reluctant) adventure through

Ireland on a prize trip that was won by AJ, the middle

child, and main character in the story. Full of funny sibling squabbles that every kid (especially the middle ones) can identify with and spending Christmas in a castle with a bunch of yodelers and aging tap dancers. It all fits together in an uproarious character cast. I challenge you to read through this whole book without bursting into laughter at least once.

Home Shopping? Building vs. Buying The Tri-Cities are booming. It seems that everywhere you look there’s a new group of houses being constructed. If you’re in the market for a home, the options can be a little overwhelming (though, in this case, lots of options are a good thing!).

Heather Derryberry, local Realtor/Broker with Desert Hills Realty, has been helping families navigate this landscape for years, and she helped us break the decision of new construction vs. existing home into some easy pros and cons.

As with many of the articles we feature here in Kid’s Play Magazine, this article isn’t meant to replace an expert’s advice, but to give you a starting point for your journey. We hope these tips help you as you decide where and how to find home.

There are some potential drawbacks when it comes to a Re-sale home.

While you are dreaming and scheming during a walk through, you may notice certain things that will need attention should you choose to purchase the home. This could range from updating appliances to revamping worn out landscaping. This can be fun and exciting to the right perOr maybe you prefer to step into a home and imagine what son. Can you walk through an empty lot and imagine where you’ll plant your trees and build your patio, or step into a model home and instantly visualize your own backsplash and counter height? Can you actively imagine what a floorplan would look like if it was flipped and had another garage bay on it?

Having some of these features in a home you are purchasing can save time, money and headaches. It can buy you a lot of time to customize your home after you have moved in and settled.

Are you a visionary? Can you look at a dirt lot and imagine what could be built on it? Then building a house might be the right path for you. Building a new home gives you the flexibility to tailor the house just the way you like it. With new construction you can add storage or extra garage bays, adjust ceiling heights, and pick your floors and wall colors.

Other new construction pros can include: •New homes are usually more energy efficient. New homes are built with current energy standards, building requirements, safety requirements, etc. A One Year Warranty comes standard with most homes •Greater flexibility for where to put your home: if you have a floor plan you love, you could build the same home in a variety of places and neighborhoods. You can build just about anywhere land is available •Customizable: Pick your colors, cabinets, carpet, counter tops, paint, light fixtures, etc •It only takes a couple months longer than buying an existing house (depending on who you use & what you’re building) •Some builders DO NOT require a construction loan for financing (Heather’s builder is one of the few that fits this category) •Brand new everything. No one has ever lived in it, ever spilled food on it, you get to make the messes yourself (and the memories too) •You get to watch the process and feel like you’re a part of it, plus you can see the materials the home was built with

As with buying a Re-sale house, there are some things that you have to watch for. Patience in the process could be the biggest one. Building a new home takes time and unforeseen hold-ups due to weather or sub-contractors being backed up can add to the time it takes to be move in ready.

Other new construction cons include: •Some builders require you to get a construction loan which requires a lot more money down and entails a lot more than a traditional loan •You’re moving into a construction zone. There’s noise & dirt from other sites. Bugs & rodents from fields nearby can decide to move into your home as their homes are displaced •Your new neighborhood is not established yet. You can’t determine traffic on roadways or see how busy your street will be until the development is finished •May not be able to walk-thru finished/built product. You have to solely rely on blueprints for feel of house & room sizes •Building takes longer and can cost more than pre-existing homes •Then there’s upgrade costs: Garage door openers are not usually included (unless paid for as upgrade option). Window treatments are not included (unless paid as upgrade).

Your walls will be white unless you pay for that too •Landscaping costs are an upgrade charge as well (most developments do front landscaping only, custom builds on acreage don’t include anything). Remember to count fencing costs into your equation as well. Everything can start to add up: Lawn, fence, sprinklers, plants, rocks, trees, curbing, garden beds, etc •Want a shed, shop, in-ground pool, or swing set? You’ll need to pay for those as well (most people add these things later) •You may have to move twice: first, sell your existing house and stay somewhere temporarily while your house is being built(or move into rental home), then move again to your new house once it’s completed.

What do you do while the house is being built? Heather expounds on this dilemma a little more. Typically, you can’t start building until your current home is sold (depending on your agreement with your lender. Not many people have the cash or choose to carry both house payments simultaneously, though it is possible). Most common is to sell your house, put down a non-refundable payment to start construction, and either stay with friends/family or rent for a couple months. Building is not the easiest transition when you have a family and a home to sell first.

So what’s Heather’s best advice on home buying/building? “I always tell clients to buy a home you can grow into not grow out of. Moving is expensive and you don’t want to outgrow your home and need to move again in two years. When building on a budget, get the structure how you want it: the size, the ceiling heights, the garage size. Don’t focus on the finishes, those can be changed later on when you have more funds available (counter tops, carpets, flooring, paint, etc). Building a new home can be an economical option IF you’re willing to make some of the smaller changes down the road.”

The decision to buy or build is a BIG one. Do your research and due diligence. List out your own pros and cons and seek the advice of professionals. As far as each process goes, decide what you can and cannot live with and go from there.

#1 Mesa Fish Hatchery (Visit this one in JUNE!) The Mesa Fish Hatchery spans 500 acres and is open for the public to explore. They received 3.5 million baby fish in May, and will be releasing the groups at the end of June. They say the grounds are open in July and August, but you’ll be looking at mostly empty ponds. Those markings indicate that walkway is part of the Urban Greenbelt Trail. The UGT is a 3.25 paved, flat trail through central Richland. It takes you through Howard Amon Park, The Parkway, and the Marjorie Sutch Greenway (another great bird watching spot!). This is the summer to go hunt for some virtual treasure! There are over 1000 geocaches hiding around Tri-Cities. Geocaching is simple: go to www.geocaching.com on your smart phone. The basic membership is free. Head out with your phone’s GPS turned on and find the coordinates listed on the website. Once you reach the coordinates you’ll have to start searching. The GPS narrows it down to a general area, now it’s up to you to find the treasure! Look under rocks, behind trees, in holes. The caches may be underneath or inside of things, but caches are never buried (at least in Tri-Cities). The website rates the caches for size and difficulty.

Kitchen Science: Homeade Ice Cream

You know what’s great about the science projects we feature here in Kid’s Play Magazine? They work! After trying 3 different projects for this issue, that were all dismal failures, we tried this ice cream experiment.

It was ridiculously easy; it took more time to set up and take pictures than it actually did to make the ice cream.

The resident 5 year old happily exclaimed that “This is the best experiment ever!”

You’ll need: - Two different sizes Ziploc style bags, quart and gallon size - ½ cup milk (we used 1%) - ½ teaspoon vanilla extract - 1 Tablespoon sugar (we use organic cane sugar, that’s why the slight color) - Ice Cubes - ¼ cup- ½ cup salt (we tried 3 kinds, they all worked: table salt, pickling salt, and rock salt) Put the milk, sugar, and vanilla in the smaller bag, seal it, and give it to a kid to squish around. Fill the larger bag halfway full of ice cubes and add the salt on top (if using finer salt, use closer to the ¼ cup measure). Make sure the ingredient bag is FIRMLY sealed, and place it on top of the ice mixture inside the big bag. Close up the big bag and start smashing it around. The kids might want gloves because this gets pretty cold. After a few minutes (3-5) the ice cream will have frozen into a soft solid. Take it out and eat it! We found the easiest way to get the ice cream out of the bag was to rinse off a corner of the bag (get the salt off), then snip the bag corner with scissors and squeeze the ice cream out. Enjoy!

Here’s why it works: (from www.eduplace.com) Not all water freezes at the same temperature. Most ocean water begins to freeze at about 2 degrees below zero (Celsius), and very salty water can remain liquid as cold as 20 degrees below. When ice cream is made the old-fashioned way, by mixing salt crystals with ice, only a little water melts before some of the dissolved salt lowers its freezing point. Depending on the type of salt used, the ice mixture in this recipe may decrease to almost negative 20 degrees C! This allows the ice to absorb a lot of heat from the cream mixture without melting. When enough heat has been absorbed from the cream mixture, the water in the cream mixture begins to freeze rapidly turning it into what we know as ice cream.
