First off, l just want to thank each and every one of you who have reached out to us this past quarter for your kind words and encouragement. It solidifies what an amazing community we live in. I’m grateful for the disappointment with kindness that you’ve communicated, and I’m thankful that so many of you understand where I’m coming from as I try to make more time and space for my family. For anyone just joining us, this is a reminder that there will not be a Fall 2017 issue of Kid’s Play.

I’ve realized this past issue though, that after Summer I will have a whole lot more time, but no idea of what is going on.

We have past issues of Kid’s Play (and you have those too, here on the website) to look through and see what happened last year- but it will take researching each individual event, just like in the days before Kid’s Play started to figure out what is going on. So, someone needs to pick up the calendar idea and make one for me, please. :) I am So. Very. Excited for this Summer. I share a lot of our ideas on the following pages, but I wanted to share one more tradition we have at our house- the whole “Morning Basket” or “Morning Time” concept as a wonderful way to “avoid summer learning loss” and keep the kids looking for books. I’ve shared before that I’m an (obsessive) planner, and we’re a homeschooling family. Other homeschooling families will recognize the Morning Time buzzword (it’s a pretty popular trend in the HS’ing circles). But anybody can do it.

Morning time is super simple- it’s a time for everybody to get together and do something in the morning/afternoon/ whenever. I like to keep our time pretty un-fussy: We sing some silly songs to get my 3 year old engaged (Itsy Bitsy Spider, Monkeys on the Bed, just nursery rhyme songs), my 6 year old loves Mother Goose rhymes and silly poems so we read a couple of those, we do some mad libs and try to make them as goofy as possible (really sneaky way to get some language arts review!:), and we read a chapter book together, usually something the 8 year old really wants to read. Most days the kids spread legos all over the floor as I read and it makes me happy when they beg for “one more chapter.” The secret is in doing something everyone will enjoy (including the parent), and making this more fun and less “to do list.”

And it’s not something we do every day- we just try to get to it a couple times a week, more often if there are complaints of boredom.

I’ve got my summer planned out (big shock:).

Here’s what we’re including in our summer basket: the summer vacation Mad Libs book, Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein (goofy kids poems), Wee Sing Nursery Rhymes and Lullabies to sing along with, a bunch of Frog and Toad books to keep the preschooler/kindergartener’s attention, and some chapter books.

Depending on whether we read every day and how many chapters we get through I hope to read aloud: the original Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne, My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George, Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard Atwater, The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White, and Caddie Woodlawn by Carol Ryrie Brink. I haven’t read the last two books before, but they come highly recommended- and supposedly the Caddie book is similar to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series (which I am tired of re-reading:).

So that’s what we’re doing. I hope you find some helpful ideas in the rest of these pages as well. I wish for a relaxing, renewing kind of summer for all of us.

Summer Safety

Summer is just around the corner and there are so many great places to go and explore in and around the Tri-Cities! With the right tools and preparation, summertime can be a relaxing and safe time for you and your family. Charge into summer with these safety tips….

BEAT THE HEAT AND SUN

- Never leave infants, children, or pets in a parked car, even if the windows are cracked open.

- Schedule outdoor activities carefully, for morning and evening hours.

- Cover up. Clothing that covers you and your child’s skin helps protect against UV rays.

- Use sunscreen of at least 15 SPV (30 SPV for better protection), even on cloudy days.

- Apply sunscreen every 2 hours, more frequently when swimming of sweating.

- On hot days, take a break every 20 to 30 minutes to drink water or an electrolyte sports drink.

- Watch for heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, fatigue, headache, confusion and dark-colored urine. Get out of the sun and cool off.

MASTER WATER SAFETY

- Always supervise children when in or around water.

A responsible adult should constantly watch young children.

- Teach kids to swim. Formal swimming lessons can protect young children from drowning.

- Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Your CPR skills could save someone’s life.

- Install a four-sided fence around home pools.

- Wear a properly fitted life jacket every time you and your loved ones are on the water.

BURNS

- Keep children and pets away from outdoor grills and at a safe distance from campfires and fire pits. Watch them carefully.

- Set up the grill, fire pit of campfire in an open area away from walls, fences and other structures.

BUGS

- Use an insect repellent that contains citronella - Change clothes and wash off insect repellent when you come inside.

- Choose a product approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Kitchen Science: Gasses

We have two simple yet oh-so-cool experiments for you: Once you’ve done these experiments, go follow TheDadLab on Instagram. He’s a London based Dad who posts awesome activities almost every day!

Baking Soda Balloons: Empty water bottle White vinegar Baking soda Food coloring Balloon

Fill an empty water bottles about ¼ of the way full of white vinegar, add a few drops of food coloring. Pour 2 Tablespoons(ish) of baking soda in an empty balloon (a funnel will make this job easier) (your balloon may not hold this much soda, that’s fine, just fill as much as you can).

Once you’ve filled the balloon, carefully attach the balloon to the top of the water bottle- being extra careful not to dump any baking soda into the vinegar. Once the balloon is well connected- have the kids pick up the balloon to empty it into the bottle. Sit back and watch the smiles as the balloons fill with gas from the baking soda/vinegar reaction. (Just in case of explosion- you may want to do this outside:)

Lava Cups:

Drinking glass Water Vegetable oil Food coloring Effervescant Vitamin C tablet (like Airborne) Fill a clean, transparent drinking glass about 1/4 of the way with tap water. Add vegetable oil to within a ½” of the top of the glass. Add a few drops of food coloring to the cup. Carefully drop in an effervescent Vitamin C tablet. Watch the magic!

As we prepped for this issue I kept stumbling on the idea of a summer schedule: a semi-flexible framework for the week, with different themes for each day. I kind of love it. Summers can seem long and boring without a plan, and this promises to cut down on some of the “but what are we going to DO today?” whining (we’ll see if it delivers… :) Here are our suggestions:

Today’s theme: Get moving! Simple really, whether you’ve had an active weekend or a lazy one, Monday always seems to set the tone for the week. So make Monday a good one with something to get the blood and endorphins flowing! If you’re part of a gym that offers kid classes- go check it out. Grab the bikes and go for a bike ride. Take a hike outside. Head down to the gymnastics gym for open gym. Take a soccer ball or tennis rackets to the park and play. Whatever you decide to do, remember that it’s a whole lot more fun for little kids if mom/dad do it too. Turn the page for some of our favorite hikes and bike rides.

Goal of the day: think deeply. What makes you ponder? Science? Art? Nature? Books? Whatever it is, this can be as much for you as for your kids. Take a trip to the library and look for good books on a subject that interests you/the kids: poetry, sketching, geology, gardening, anything! Head down to the planetarium and watch a science film. Go bird-watching. Check out a museum or art gallery. Whatever makes you contemplate the world. See our suggestions on the next page.

Objective: find water- play in it. That’s it. Easy peasy. Turn the page for a full list splash parks, water parks, and public pools in the Tri-cities (and a few road trips)!

Mini road trip day! Who doesn’t remember road trips as a kid? Stop by the store, grab snacks, jump in the car and argue with your siblings all the way there because you’re so excited you can hardly stand it. While we can do without the arguing, road trips are a rite of passage, and we have so many cool things to do within just a few hours of Tri-Cities. While compiling the list on page 14 we found so many things that we had never heard about! And (semi)pro-tip: good audio books and dramatized adventures are lifesavers for road trips :).

Every structure needs a little bit of unstructure to stay sustainable- especially when you’re talking about little kids. So here’s your day to do whatever. Play dates, cook something together, make ice cream, go hang out at the pool again, take the kids to open gym again, go see a movie, whatever your kids want to do. If you and your kids like lists- go hunting on Pinterest for cool summer activities and make a big list to tape to the fridge. Then when Friday rolls around you can mark a couple things off each week: water balloon fight: check, tea party in the backyard: check, Movie at the park: check. Drove mom crazy? Nope! Sebastian was a longtime volunteer in the Therapy Dog Reading Program and Gunner was our first Registered Therapy Dog to come listen to kids read. All the stuffed animals up for adoption were donated to the library from Sebastian’s estate.
