Kid’s Play

Worms. Seeds. Flowers. Dirt. You should’ve seen the excitement over our photo shoot this spring. We had a perfectly sunny day (in February, pretty thankful for that one), and we had kids climbing in garden beds, getting dirty knees, and holding worms. Four of our kid models asked if they could take worms home, and we were happy to say yes. A couple kids went home with flower petals. And most kids left with dirty knees.

Isn’t that childhood and springtime in a nutshell? Fun in the dirt and the sunshine. Ending the day desperately in need of a bath.

In the following pages you’ll find all sorts of Springtime related fun. We talk about playgrounds, we list sport signups, we talk about avoiding concussions, we introduce you to the Girl Scouts, we show how to watch seeds sprout, and much more.

One of the “much more” is an article on seasonal allergies. As a lifelong allergy sufferer I was very excited to sit down with one of the best experts in our area. Kids and seasonal allergies are a real concern, but having seasonal allergies doesn’t mean we need to hole ourselves inside waiting for the pollen to stop floating by. Understanding seasonal allergies has been half my battle, managing exposure the other half of the equation. And I found it very encouraging to hear Dr. Wannarachue say that one of the best ways to protect my kids from a life of allergy symptoms: Play in the grass. Enjoy the Springtime. Get dirty. Be a kid.

Working with the doctor we put together some ways to feel a little less stuffy this spring.

Many of these tips are ones I have used for years and took me a long time to learn. I wish someone had shared them with me decades ago. Just now, in the past 5 years, do I finally feel like I can control my allergies, not the other way around. Spring has always been my favorite season, but 7 or 8 years ago- sitting in the park under a tree in April would never have happened. Now I know how long I can spend in the grass or the garden before heading inside for a shower, change of clothes, and a huge glass of water.

That was the reason I wanted so badly to include this story- allergies can be a hard thing to try and live around. But, armed with some education, expert knowledge, and maybe a few tissues, we can all love springtime a little bit more. Which means more time spent swinging.

More dirt on your jeans. More time enjoying springtime and being there to introduce kids to the wonders of nature waking up.

“a youth athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game shall be removed from competition at that time” and “...may not return to play until the athlete is evaluated by a licensed health care provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussions and received written clearance to return to play from that health care provider”

According to the CDC, A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a fall or a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth.

Concussions can last for a short time, or some people have symptoms that last for days or weeks, however, even short concussions can be serious.

Below are some warning signs of a concussion that all parents should be aware of: . Dazed or stunned appearance . Change in level of consciousness or awareness . Clumsiness, talks more slowly than usual . Shows behavior changes . And/or asks repetitive questions or shows memory concerns.

More common symptoms of a concussion include: . Headache . Nausea . Dizziness . Sensitivity to light or noise . Feeling mentally “foggy” . Problems with concentration and memory, and confusion.

Injured athletes can show many or just a few of the signs or symptoms of a concussion.

The best way to prevent a concussion is to take care of your head. Always wear a seatbelt in the car.

When you are walking on the street, make sure to look both ways before crossing, and obey all streetlights and traffic signs; always use a crosswalk. In sports always wear helmets or headgear and other safety equipment when biking, skateboarding, or riding your scooter.

Playsets and Property Values We have a story featuring the What, Where, & How of play structures on page 20 of this issue. But what do you do with that playset when it’s time to move on? Heather Derryberry with Windermere Tri-Cities says that it all depends on the potential buyer you are working with. To some buyers a great playset could be a selling point, and something you can bargain on, to others it might not make much of a difference.

Austin Winchester, Certified Playground Safety Inspector with Rainbow Play Systems, says that as long as proper precautions are taken, well designed play sets can easily be moved and set up at your new home.

Girl Scouts

Some may say that when they think of Girl Scouts, the first thing that comes to mind is “cookies!” Truth be told, there is much more depth beyond the promoting and selling of those delectable and irresistible morsels of goodness.

Perhaps you’ve seen the “5 essential skills” (goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics) listed on the cookie boxes. Each of the skills explains how the Girl Scout Cookie Program helps transform girls into intelligent, courageous and confident young leaders. It’s hard to deny that these fundamental skills are valuable to an individual’s success in life. But what else does Girl Scouts have to offer?

Hailey Ellis, a 10th grade Girl Scout from Kennewick, Washington, has some insight to share.

“Participating in the Cookie Program is just a part of what Girl Scouts do,” she said, “we also help people in need, protect the environment, plant trees, improve neighborhoods, design robots and much more.” Girl Scouting is more than just what activities girls do but about how they do them.

The promotion of fun, friendship and community improvement is integrated into every Girl Scout experience.

Girl Scouts are also passionate about helping people and doing kind things for others, such as pulling weeds at a local park or picking up recyclable trash at a retirement community. While these activities are about the importance of helping the community and people, it is more about how girls lead and learn by doing. Girl Scouts select the activities most important to them, which not only makes it fun but enhances the learning experience.

At age 15, Hailey has been involved with her local Council, Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho, (GSEWNI) since she was in Kindergarten. “I have had a lot of amazing opportunities,” said Hailey. “I met the national CEO, I was able to go to camp for a 2-week counselor training and I have had the privilege of being a Program Aid for the past 3 years for my Council. Being a Program Aid allows me to help the younger girls and be a positive role model for them.”

s e i k o o C t s u J (Continued) More Than Behind every Girl Scout, like Hailey, is a team that encourages her to excel. Parents, volunteers, troop leaders, co-leaders and event directors all work together to help girls realize their potential in becoming girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Carol Ellis, a local volunteer and Hailey’s grandmother, has been a Junior Troop Leader for GSEWNI for the past seven years. When asked what her most rewarding experience was she replied, “The organization welcomes girls from all walks of life. Each girl is special with her own personality and passion.”

Girl Scouts encourages any girl in grades K-12, who wishes to better herself and the community around her, while having fun doing it – to get involved with their local council. This is a chance for girls to be part of a movement that is valuable on a global scale.

Carol sees it on a daily basis. “They get to learn new skills, explore new areas and have fun as they build leadership skills and lifelong friendships,” said Carol.

When a Girl Scout discovers her special skills and talents while connecting with others, she discovers how to take action, making the world a better place.

Coping with Seasonal Allergies?

It’s that time of year again. The beautiful blossoms on all the trees and flowers, the light spring winds blowing gently, and…. Sneezing.

Most allergy sufferers have at least a dozen ways they cope with this time of year, and all the pollen it brings. But what about kids? Can kids get seasonal allergies? What kind of options do kids have available to help deal with allergy symptoms?

Lucky for us, we were able to ask those very questions to Dr. Nik Wannarachue, Trios Health pediatrician and pediatric allergist (and the only Board Certified pediatric endocrinologist in Tri-Cities).

Dr. Wannarachue has 40 years of experience treating kids with allergies and is a wealth of knowledge to talk to.

The first thing we asked: Can kids get seasonal allergies?

The answer is yes. Children can start to show allergy symptoms as early as newborn stages, however, most early allergies are a reaction to foods and not to pollens. Most kids don’t start getting seasonal allergies until they’re a few years old, and really starting to spend a lot of time outdoors. Ages 3-4 is when Dr. Wannarachue says he starts seeing most of the pollen reactions in patients.

Dr. Wannarachue describes asthma like a loaded weapon. All you need is for one little thing to pull the trigger, and you’re faced with an asthma attack. When it comes to breathing difficulties, please don’t wait it out, call your pediatrician or get it checked out at the doctor’s office as soon as you can.

What do kids allergies look like?

Just like adult allergies. Sneezing. Watery eyes.

Itchy throat. Coughing. Notice how all of those symptoms are from direct contact with pollen, either breathing it in or getting it into your eyes?

The same pollens can also cause rashes and skin problems if kids get it on exposed skin. It really depends on how strong the allergy is and how much pollen the person came in contact with. Even more serious are potential headaches and even migraines that can come from repeated exposure to whatever is causing the allergic reaction.

Sometimes those respiratory symptoms can lead to bigger problems such as wheezing. Sometimes that wheezing can be a warning sign for asthma, other times it’s a symptom of infection.

So what causes allergic reactions?

Your child’s pediatrician can prescribe one of many over the counter treatments, or discuss allergy shots for specific cases(also, see helpful hints on the opposing page--> ). Well, it does make sense. Dr. Wannarachue explained it like this: every person has a threshold to every type of allergen. Sometimes we never reach that threshold and we never have a reaction – therefore never triggering allergy symptoms. For example, you could be allergic to horse hair, but if you’ve never been around a horse for more than a few minutes, you would have never met your threshold and exhibited symptoms. You could spend your whole life never knowing that you would make a really sneezy cowboy/girl.

You might have heard the saying: if you live in Tri-Cities long enough you’ll get seasonal allergies? Dr. WannaraThis question has many answers. Allergies getting the best of you?

Here are a few tips that can help reduce the pollen reactions: •Get out of the pollen. If you are outside, try heading inside to give yourself a break.

•Wash your hands and arms, touching your face with pollen on your hands will only fuel your symptoms.

•Even better yet, take a shower. Getting that pollen out of your hair can really help calm your allergies.

•Change into clean clothes. Pollen hangs out and follows you around on your clothes.

•Drink lots of water. Many times drinking a large glass of water can help calm an itchy throat.

Other things like hot herbal teas can soothe the throat and deal with congestion.

•Keep your hands away from your eyes. Wear sunglasses if it helps, but don’t touch your eyes.

•If your eyes are really burning, putting a cold wet hand towel over your eyes is magic. Gel eye packs that you keep in the freezer (made specifically for eyes) can also help reduce itchy eyes.

•Screen time can make itchy eyes even more painful. Turn off the electronics until your eyes start to feel better.

•Keep a “no shoes in the house” rule. Know what’s on the bottom of those shoes? You probably don’t want to. The simple act of taking your shoes off inside your home can cut down on a lot of unwelcome allergens in your living space.

•Try to avoid the pollens you know you have the worst reactions to. If you notice that pulling weeds always sends you into a sneezing fit, try to limit the amount of time you spend on the task, wear gloves while working, and be sure to shower and change afterwards. If a fresh cut lawn bothers your eyes, then close the windows and stay inside while someone else does the mowing. A quick watering after mowing can help tame the pollen so you can go outside again.

Common Core + Preschool

What Does It All Mean

Preschool, Kindergarten, Early Learning; we’ve talked about these topics before here in Kid’s Play Magazine. But it seems that the game is changing right now as education guidelines evolve in Washington State and across the nation. In case you’re just joining us, this is the third story (issue) that we have covered Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the changes that they bring to K-12 education. (The past issue stories can be found on our website at www.kidsplaytc.com) Last fall I sat down with several Richland School District leaders to talk about Common Core. One of changes we discussed was the new campaign by the Department of Early Learning to streamline early education guidelines across the state. Since that interview we’ve pored over the materials given to us, consulted with several local preschools, and tried to decipher exactly what these guidelines mean to parents of small children.

When I started researching preschools several years ago, I broke them into several categories, for my own purposes.

I categorized schools into 3 groups: Home Based, Center Based Church Affiliated, and Center Based Unaffiliated.

Then I took those categories and broke each one into four structures: Play Group Structured, Academic Structured, Parent/Teacher Cooperative , or Montessori. So of these categories and structures, a school could be a Home based Academic Structure, Center Based Unaffiliated Play Group Structured, Center Based Church Affiliated Montessori, or any other number of possible combinations. (Confused yet?

You should have seen the spreadsheet! : ) Using this method of categorizing preschools really helped our family decide which school was right for us. And now, with a second child in preschool, I’ve learned that just because one structure/group worked well for our family with one child, doesn’t mean that it will be a perfect fit for another child.

Whatever the structure or basis for preschool, all preschool programs should have one thing in common: the main purpose of the program is to prepare kids for success in Kindergarten.

Kindergarten Readiness:

Now that’s a buzzword if ever there was one. If you have a young child then you already recognize that many concepts are being taught grades earlier than they were when “we were kids.” Reading is being taught in Kindergarten now, and many preschool programs are working sight words into their curriculum as well. Last issue we printed a comprehensive list of the Kindergarten Common Core Math Standards- also listed is the website where all those standards are available.

When preparing for this article I went back to my old spreadsheet and tried to talk to one director from each type (category) of preschool to gauge how Common Core had or had not affected their program.

Patty Marcum, Director of Gateway Preschool in Richland, says they have followed the rollout of CCSS very closely. She feels that since it is the job of Preschool to prepare kids to be successful in Kindergarten, and part of that preparation is introducing kids to the background and teaching methods they will encounter in Kindergarten. Patty says that since all of her teachers hold teaching degrees and are certificated by Washington State, they have all been through the training on how to administer Common Core as part of their continuing education. In addition, all her staff have attended the trainings hosted by the Richland School District throughout the (rolling)implementation of the CCSS (the RSD trainings are open to all preschool professionals).

Another director, Jolene Hatke of Imagination Studios Academy in Pasco, says she feels that their school has always been ahead of the curve, so while they have watched the standards closely, they haven’t implemented any changes as a result. All of the milestones dictated by common core are already met or exceeded by the curriculum used at the school. Jolene says that it is important to her to let the teachers feel that they can be creative with their curriculum; as long as the milestones and standards are being met, teachers can choose how best to teach to that end. Jolene says that academics are only a portion of what they’re teaching at Imagination Studios, development of the whole child is what they focus on: behavioral development, academic development, as well as spiritual development, are all worked into the learning plans and school mission.

A local Montessori school (who wished to be unnamed) stated that the Montessori curriculum is already all encompassing, and they feel that their curriculum already does an excellent job of preparing young minds.

The method behind play based programs is more about “allowing kids to explore and learn at their own pace, and learn the structure of a classroom setting rather than trying to drill in bullet point style standards.”

Fair enough.

But, if you ask the Richland School District what Kindergarteners need to be ready for school: “more importantly these kids need to learn the dynamics of a classroom.” How to wait your turn, how to stand in line, how to raise your hand when you need to speak, how to follow 2-3 step instructions. -Participate in conversations. Take turns in group conversations, and listen to others in group for short period of time.

-Name most familiar things.

I appreciate that the inside cover of the DEL publication lists the following disclaimer- “Washington Guidelines are NOT an exhaustive guide to child development nor a development checklist. Children’s development is highly individualized and unique to each child.” And that “(this is) NOT a curriculum… (and) NOT permanent or unchanging.”

So what’s the conclusion on all this Early Learning information? How do these standards/guidelines REALLY affect Early Learning?

This is just me talking here, but we are fortunate to have some resources that generations before us might not have had- at least not all in one place and written down. I definitely see the benefit of having a comprehensive idea of where most kids fall developmentally. It’s nice to be able to look at a list and see that it’s “normal” for a 2 year old to “name items in a picture book, such as a cat or a tree” and “enjoy making animal sounds to represent familiar animals.” And as a mom it’s also handy to look down the list and see things that I could be working on with my kids, for example (gross motor skills ages 4-5) “use both hands to catch. Throw with good aim.” (Since I myself throw with horrible aim, this particular one is something we can learn together?)

So what should parents do with all of this information? I highly recommend reading through the DEL guidelines document. It’s a fairly easy read, and includes a lot of good information for parents and caregivers alike. Use the information to start a conversation with your family, caregivers, or preschool staff. Maybe highlight a few of the areas you think your child could improve on- sharing, waiting their turn, using a pencil properly. Chances are good that your support network- grandma and grandpa, aunts/uncles, care providers, preschool teachers, etc- will be more than willing to help you teach those skills.

Do I think these guidelines are ground breaking? No. But I do think we can all find them helpful and useful as we navigate parenting in the early years. I appreciate the fact that we have these resources available. As I’ve said before, and as these guidelines state- learning guidelines are a rolling target. I’m sure we will see these documents continue to evolve with time.

Whatever your kids use it for, play structures are the highlight of many backyards. Kids can spend hours, days, entire summers, swinging and climbing all over those beams. Since most play structures are so beloved, we wanted to know: Are all play sets created equal? How do we take care of those structures?

What can we do to help keep our kids (relatively) safe?

We turned to the experts at Rainbow Play Systems, who hold over 30 years of experience in manufacturing, installing, and maintaining local play structures.

What should families consider when shopping for a playground?

-Age appropriateness and longevity: buying a massive structure for a baby might seem overboard, but Cherryl Wood, President of Rainbow Play Spokane, says that you want to think long term. Look for systems with interchangeable components. The structure itself “should be something your children can grow into, instead of out of.” Swings especially can be swapped out- start with a bucket swing for toddlers, then move to a sling swing when kids are old enough. “Purchasing the right system for your child’s long term needs can be the difference in having one system for a lifetime or purchasing an additional system every 2-3 years” -How much room do you have available? First off, measure the area that you wish to use for the play system. Almost all play structures recommend 6’ of clearance on every side of the structure. This allows for space for those swings to swing, and keeps kids and surrounding structures from harm.

Setting up your playground

What is the best way to anchor your play set? Austin Winchester, a Certified Playground Safety Inspector with Rainbow Play says that “Most all little ‘box kit’ playgrounds, usually sold on-line or at big box retailers, come with stakes to anchor the system. The stakes are really just to satisfy a liability requirement and do little good. Quality engineered residential play sets usually don’t require anchoring as they have a low center of gravity and a broad foot print. Always refer to the manufacturer for details on properly anchoring your system” What’s this about “Safety Surfacing?”

Safety surfacing is the material bedded around your play area. This material can range from wood chips to rubber “bark” products, the purpose of this material is to avoid injuries from falling on the surface while at play. Austin says : “The recommended depth (of safety surfacing) is determined by two factors. 1. The fall height of the play system (specified by the manufacturer). 2.

What type of surfacing material will be used. This question can be answered by your playground professional to help you get it right. It is important to note that customers do not need to spend thousands of dollars on their play area in order to use their new play system. I would highly recommend letting your playground expert help you with this decision.”

What about assembling the structure?

If you hate IKEA furniture, then it’s probably not recommended that you try installing your own play system. :) Homeowners can, and often do, assemble their own playgrounds, but you need to pay very close attention to the manufacturer’s assembly requirements. Rainbow Play recommends consulting with a playground professional if you have any questions or need any help.

What is a playground professional? Playground professionals have completed safety training specifically for assembling and maintaining play structures.

Certified Playground Safety Inspector; CPSI, is a title awarded to trained professionals who have been authorized by the National Recreation and Parks Association. Always research your playground dealer and ensure they have qualified installation professionals.

How to keep that pirate ship in tip top shape?

As with many things, maintenance of your new play system is always a good idea. Keep an eye out for loose fasteners and tighten or repair them immediately.

We like the idea of picking a day on the calendar and making a comprehensive examination of your playground on the same day every year. (First Day of Spring perhaps?) Go over the entire structure and make sure to repair loose pieces, tighten fasteners, check for attachment integrity, etc. You can also hire CPSI playground professionals to come and do this for you.

Also on the topic of safety: Try to keep additional toys clear of the play area. Toys and clutter in and around the play area are quite dangerous and cause numerous safety hazards. Never add non-manufactured items to the system. Children often tie strings and ropes onto playground equipment which is very dangerous. Maintenance and eliminating toys and clutter is an easy process when a play area is supervised by an adult.

Gardening = Science

Growing a bean sprout for observation: What you’ll need: -Bean seed -Some type of tall glass jar (we used a mason jar, but a recycled mayonnaise/pickle jar or vase would work just as well) -Paper towels -Water It’s really simple. Roll up paper towels the size of your jar. Fill the jar full of rolled towels. Push a bean seed down in between the jar side and the towel roll. Add 1” of water. Set in a warm place and check on it every day.

Your bean SHOULD sprout in 3-5 days. You’ll be able to see the root system grow. Before sprouting the bean needs more warmth than sunshine (though a sunny windowsill will work just fine); after sprouting though it will need that sunny warm spot to continue growing.

Monitor the amount of water in the jar, try to keep it at about 1”.

Watch the root system develop and the bean plant grow!

A few notes: -Warmth is REALLY important when you’re trying to get this seed to sprout. We started this experiment two weeks before taking this magazine to print- thinking we would have plenty of time to document the growth. After 10 days in the windowsill and still not seeing the bean sprout, we noticed that the glass of the jar was getting pretty chilly after dark (it was still freezing at night).

Once we moved the bean to a warmer place it sprouted immediately- then we put the jar back in the sunshine.

According to www.gardening.cornell.edu beans need a steady “Germination temperature (of) 70 F to 80 F Germination is slow and poor when temperatures are below 60 F.” This is why our example is kind of small. Print date waits for no bean :( -We used actual bean seeds from the gardening store. However, you don’t have to. You can use any type of whole bean. We plan to plant our seedlings in the garden after this experiment, which is why we chose a seed package.
