I have a love/hate relationship with science experiment instructions.

You’ve probably seen the science experiment page we’ve featured here in Kid’s Play this past year. You wouldn’t believe the behind the scenes work that goes into those projects (thanks to Chrissy from Teacher’s World for all her help!).

You see, I’m convinced that the writers of instructions for science experiments like to mess with people. Every once in awhile they skip a step or purposefully mess up the instructions, just to see if we’re paying attention. It’s their own science experiment- or at least that’s my story. You wouldn’t believe how many science “failures” we’ve had over here while searching for something to print. And I’m not the kind of mom who usually makes messes just “because.” Things like finger painting- are you kidding? Someone has to clean that up! Most days I can barely keep up with the regular messes.

Summer issue I tried three dismal disasters before we gave up and just made ice cream.

You know what? The kids were ecstatic. We made that ice cream several times this summer.

Last spring I tried that bean experiment- the one that froze in the cold windowsill and we had to start all over- we barely had a tiny root to show for pictures in the magazine. “Print date waits for no bean.”

This August I had procured materials for three different experiments to try, and prayed that one of them turned out. As we were mixing rocks and crayons in a jar on the stove (that one didn’t pan out…) my six year old pipes up “Mama, I really love all the science experiments we get to do for the magazine. They’re really fun.”

That’s when it hit me- this isn’t about our project turning out Pinterest perfect (though in my case I do have to take decent pictures for all of you:). This is about spending time doing something different and exciting with my kids. So what if we have a couple (ahem, a lot) of flops, my kids still learned something, even if it was what NOT to do.

So, to the rock candy that never solidified, the “playdough” that molded immediately, the sidewalk paint that had to be scrubbed off, the crayon candle that wouldn’t burn- thank you. My kids and I giggled together, we experimented, we learned something.

So what if it didn’t turn out perfect, life never is; the important part is that we laugh, learn, and enjoy the journey.

To reduce the risk of spreading illness at school, nothing beats proper hand washing with soap and water.

Make sure your child distributes the soap evenly over the hands and lathers it in between the fingers. Scrub well for approximately 20 seconds. Then, rinse thoroughly with warm water. When throwing away paper towels, try to not touch the garbage can.

Besides how to wash their hands, teach your children when to wash their hands: • Before eating food • After using the restroom • After blowing their nose, coughing or sneezing • After performing science labs such as touching an animal or mixing chemicals • After playing outside or performing other recreation activities

Did you know?

-November is National Adoption Month. President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first adoption week in 1984. President Bill Clinton then expanded the national awareness week into an entire month in 1995.

-National Adoption Day is November 21st, and focuses specifically on children in the U.S. foster care system. Over the past 15 years, more than 54,000 foster children have been adopted during this annual one day event (nationaladoptionday.org) -Over 50,000 kids were adopted domestically in the U.S. in 2012 (the most recent government statistics we could find. This doesn’t include private adoptions without state involvement).

-2012 also saw 8,668 kids adopted internationally. Most international adoptions come from China, Ethiopia, and Russia (for years 2010-13).

Many local dentists participate in candy buyback programs. Dentistry for Kids is buying back Candy For The Troops at both their Kennewick and Richland locations. Bring your kid and their candy into either location the first week of November and your child will receive $1/lb for all candy donated.

Forever Family

By Jennifer Tomasino Last fall during our Winter 2014 photo shoot, a mom of one of my models asked if I would ever be interested in doing a story for adoption awareness month (November). She told me that our little model, Jadyn, was adopted from China and had a pretty amazing story; “She was a blue baby.”

While reviewing the book “Red Butterfly” for the Summer 2015 issue I learned what “blue baby” meant and the precarious position of Chinese orphan girls. When this Fall issue rolled around I knew we had to catch up with Jadyn and her family to hear their story. I hope you find this wonderful, fairy-tale ending as inspiring as I do.

Just over eight years ago, a tiny baby girl was found in a Chinese parking garage in the town of Yang Zhou. She was estimated to be about one month old and had a major heart defect. Today this same little girl is a bouncing, healthy 3rd grader, who snuggled up on her Dad’s lap as her parents shared their story for this article.

Sue and Ames Zacharias, of Kennewick, have been married for 15 years. About 10 years ago they decided that they wanted to add to their family through adoption. Both had children from previous marriages, and they had one young son together, but Ames says he had always wanted to feel like he had contributed to making someone else’s life better.

After hearing about the plight of young girls in China, they knew this was the direction they were supposed to take.

Thanks mostly to China’s strict one child policy, and since baby boys are prized in Chinese culture, many baby girls are abandoned at birth. Babies with birth defects, even simple ones, are often abandoned as well. The lucky ones make it to orphanages where they are raised by the state. At the age of 14, children age out of the system and are turned out on their own, regardless of whether they have a home or place to go.

In 2005 Sue and Ames began their adoption journey: they filled out the mountains of paperwork, got their fingerprints done, submitted to a home study with a case worker, and began dreaming of their new baby.

It took over four months to get through the initial application process, turns out that China is incredibly picky about who can adopt their orphans.

Potential parents need to have a certain income, and even have to fall within “acceptable” height and weight categories.

Once paperwork was completed Sue and Ames were given a tracking number to watch their application move through the system, and told that average wait time was 6-8 months. Chinese adoption packets go in a stack and the adoptable children’s files in another stack, they pull files off the top of both stacks and call it a match; so it was simply a matter of waiting for their name to come up. However, the eyes of the world were on China as the clock ticked down to the Beijing Olympics in 2008. As the world watched, China started reducing the number of allowed international adoptions to improve their statistics.

Instead of a few dozen adoptions a month the stream slowed down to 2 or 3. The Zacharias family sat helplessly as their number barely inched forward on the list.

After three years of waiting, Sue heard about the special needs program. Turns out there is a different stack of adoption applications for kids with special needs, and that list hadn’t slowed down. Sue and Ames resubmitted their application and checked through a list of possible disabilities. One box they checked was minor heart problems. Over the next year they were “offered” (but had to decline) two babies who had serious heart defects, and very slim chance of surviving the adoption process. It was starting to look like their baby would never come.

Then, one Friday morning, Ames checked his email and saw the message they had been waiting almost half a decade to see, an application match and the photo of a beautiful little, two year old Chinese girl staring back at him. It was love at first sight, they knew this was their baby. Attached to the email was a copy of her health records, which showed serious heart complications, and the family had just 24 hours to answer the email. Ames got on the phone with Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital and OHSU and explained the situation to both hospitals. Within hours both pediatric cardiologists called him back personally and said “we can fix her, you just get her here.”

Six weeks of whirlwind followed as the family prepared to go to China to meet their new daughter: Visas, plane tickets, travel plans, etc. for Sue, Ames, their young son, and Sue’s sister who was helping on the trip. China wants adoptive families to spend time touring the country and getting to know the culture before taking their child home, so the adoption agency had set up a 3 day tour of Beijing for 19 families who were headed over at the same time.

Finally Ames, Sue and family members arrived at the Chinese adoption center in Nanjing, province of Jiangsu.

They sat in the waiting room as the orphanage workers brought out baby Jadyn. They were given 30 minutes together in the waiting room and then allowed to take her for the night.

(Continued from previous page) The next morning they could either bring her back or continue on with the adoption. Sue says Jadyn had no anxiety or concern, “she knew I was her mama.”

Jadyn was very quiet but not shy. The next few days Jadyn wanted held constantly, Sue carried her around in a baby carrier. Jadyn was 2 ½ years old, but due to her heart condition she was only 21 lbs and wearing 6/9 month size clothing. The orphanage nurses hadn’t allowed her to walk much, or exert any energy at all, they had sped up Jadyn’s adoption because they were worried about her catching a cold and not making it through the winter.

The whole family flew to a city just outside Hong Kong and waited for several days for the paperwork to go through. During this time a Chinese physician examined Jadyn and the family learned just how bad her heart condition was. Jadyn’s heart was working at about 60%, her little lips were blue from poor blood flow. Sue says the doctor listened to Jadyn and then “looked up at us like ‘are you crazy, do you know how bad this is?’”

Surgery appointments for Jadyn had been established before they left to get her, so two weeks after arriving in the states she had her first open heart surgery.

This surgery increased her heart function to 80%.

Eleven months later a second open heart surgery pushed her heart function to 98/99%. Jadyn recovered from both surgeries remarkably well, the nurses at Sacred Heart called her a model patient.

In that first year home Jadyn worked with a physical therapist to learn to walk and climb stairs and do all the normal things a two year old should do, she passed the mandatory home studies with flying colors. Ames, Sue and Jadyn went to the Benton County courthouse and stood before a judge for the official adoption ceremony which allowed Jadyn to finalize her U.S. citizenship. Sue says that from day one Jadyn has been a girly girl, “I put a bow in her hair as we left the orphanage that first day, within days she was asking for bows or pretty things. I think she was just so happy to feel pretty.”

Today Jadyn is an active, happy eight year old. You would never guess she had such a rough beginning.

She’s doing very well in school, and runs around playing like any other kid. It’s easy to see that her parents are completely in love with her. Jadyn sat and showed me pictures of herself at the orphanage and flashed the biggest smile when I told her she was a very cute baby.

From a tiny, sick baby left in a parking garage, to a healthy, bright little girl with an even brighter future.

Sue and Ames, you sure did change someone’s life for the better. Your story is amazing and your dedication admirable, you’ve made a tiny piece of the world a happier place.

The Zacharias family went through the adoption process on their own, but there is an organization here in Tri-Cities who helps families navigate the adoption journey.

Heart for the Fatherless is a Christian orphan ministry that seeks to create awareness and educate the greater Tri-Cities’ community about the plight of orphan and foster children. Heart for the Fatherless was started in 2007 as a small ministry at Calvary Chapel by just a few families seeking to emotionally and financially support those that had decided to step out and adopt or foster a child. As HFTF grew, so did their understanding of the great need for many vulnerable children to be placed in forever homes. In an effort to further equip and empower families, Heart for the Fatherless began holding a yearly conference to educate those who were interested in adopting, fostering, or otherwise supporting both orphans overseas and foster children in our own community. In 2014, HFTF received their official 501c3 and is now an independent organization in the Tri-Cities, but the mission to be a support and resource to area families remains largely the same.

Heart for the Fatherless has monthly support groups for adoptive families; quarterly family gatherings for those who have adopted, foster, or are just interested in doing so; offers grants to qualified families in the process of adopting; and is personally available to those who have questions.

Heart for the Fatherless also partners with other area ministries to offer the annual ONE conference which promotes the needs of disadvantaged children. The ONE Conference features nationally known keynote speakers and breakout sessions that include both local resources and regional organizations and is free to attendees.

This year it will be held November 7, 2015, at First Baptist Church in Richland. See their website heartforthefatherless.org for more details.

Healthy Kids = Healthy Adults

Editor’s note: As parents we spent countless hours shuffling our kids to and from activities. I’m the first to admit that somewhere in the hours spent on the sidelines at gymnastics classes and t-ball games I’ve wondered: What’s the real benefit here? I know it’s good for them, but how?

“Participation in sports and fitness activities can lead to better fitness for kids and long term participation in sports. This is very important today as more and more recreation pursuits for kids and young adults are based on more sedentary activities such as video games and social media,” says Stan Johnson, Recreation Coordinator with Richland Parks and Recreation and lifelong athlete. Being active from a young age increases heart health, muscle and bone strength, endurance, PLUS it helps children develop good exercise habits for later in life.

•Physical activity can help students perform better academically (CDC research) •Daily activity can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity (CDC research) •Regular exercise, helps to build self-confidence and self-esteem, and helps with stress management (American Psychological Association)

In addition to scheduled time at school; after-school sports and family activity go a long way towards promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Outside of involving your child in a sports league, it’s important for physical activity to be a norm in the household. Kids look up to their parents as role models, and if they see us modeling healthy behavior, they’re more likely to adopt those habits as well. Exercise is like any other habit — eating well, reading, cleaning up after yourself… With encouragement from family and other role models, positive reinforcement, and even simply participating with your child, you can create an environment where exercise is a positive, integral part of life.

But what do we mean by ‘daily activity,’ and in what ways does regular exercise physically reduce these risks?

The CDC recommends at least one hour of physical activity each day for children. Most Tri-Cities schools have a lot of activity built into their day — long recess is still the norm in our Elementary schools. Jason Lee Elementary as well as other schools in Richland allow for 45 minutes of recess each day alongside 50 minutes of Physical Education each week. Most Kennewick and Pasco schools have similar offerings. This is compared to the national average of under 30 minutes a day for recess and just 25 minutes a week for PE (national statistics from Center on Education Policy).

Lucky for us, the Columbia Basin is a wonderful area for outdoor activities: •Hiking is a great way to exercise, get outdoors, and spend time together as a family. We have a number of excellent day hikes around the Tri-Cities. Since trails often have obstacles, and many are uphill, hiking is a form of cardio that also works on leg strength and coordination (Why do you think Badger Mountain is always packed?).

•Cycling, another form of cardio, can be just as much fun as hiking. This can help kids with leg strength and motor skills, and going fast is a bonus too.

•Swimming is a full-body workout in addition to cardio. Nearly every muscle in the body is being used during proper swimming, and it’s also lowimpact, which makes chances of injury slimmer than with other, hit-the-ground-running sports.

•Tennis can make a great family outing and you’ll find it is a good sport for all ages. Tri-Cities has several newly refurbished tennis courts that are public access. Tennis is another activity that works multiple areas of the body, it’s a good cardio exercise as well as great upper body workout.

•To deviate from the cardio, Golf is another way for the whole family to get out and enjoy some sunshine. Golf, while lower impact, can help kids learn patience and the importance of technique — both important from an academic and overall life standpoint.

•Many other activities can be done at local parks, or even in your backyard — tossing around a frisbee, wiffle ball, one-on-one soccer, and other classic schoolyard games like red light/green light are great fun for kids and parents!

A strong body accustomed to activity is less likely to suffer injuries. Often, injuries happen as a result of being unprepared for a particular activity.

If exercise is a norm, the body is more prepared to handle otherwise difficult tasks — for kids, this can be anything from spending all day at the lake to roughhousing with siblings. Increased reflexes, hand-eye coordination, and dexterity can help keep kids from getting hurt.

The social aspect of sports is critical to children’s development. Even sports based on individual progress, such as running, swimming, or golf, can help kids make friends with similar interests, especially as they get older. Have you ever called up a workout buddy when you needed extra motivation? Kids enjoy the comaraderie of exercise with friends as well.

In addition to making friends, exercise of all kinds help kids learn other important social skills, such as perseverance and goal-setting. To quote Stan again, “Kids learn about teamwork, dealing with adversity, sportsmanship and many other life skills when participating in sports.”

In terms of stress relief and mental health, exercise boosts endorphins, neurotransmitters in the brain that trigger positive response. While this effect is often called ‘runner’s high,’ it does not apply exclusively to running — any form of activity will increase endorphins. The production of these chemicals within your body as a result of exercise gives a physical link between exercise and feeling happier.

Exercise also has meditative properties. Sports and games can demand a high level of mental and emotional involvement along with the physical. This intense, full-body focus serves as a release for everyday stresses. It forces us to temporarily let go of things we’ve been dealing with, and gives an alternate route for that energy. In recent years, many doctors and psychiatrists have

recommended that their clients exercise (in addition to other things) as a form of treatment for mental health issues like depression and anxiety(Mayo Clinic). With stress levels only rising in today’s world, among both adults and youth, consistent exercise can help kids cope with day-to-day anxieties.

To put it all in a nutshell: healthy, active kids are more likely to grow into healthy, active adults.

Athletics of all kinds contribute to a child’s health, on both a physical and mental level. It helps them learn to control their mind and body. Like so many other traits and habits we bring with us from childhood to adulthood, exercise has the potential to grow with your child as well as help them grow!

Food Allergies: Gluten-Free!

Egg- Free!

Dairy-Free!

Nut-Free!

Walk into any grocery store and you’re sure to see these labels. They make life (and shopping) much easier for people living with food allergies. For someone suffering a food allergy these labels might as well read, “SAFE! You can eat this!”

But what are food allergies all about? It seems that everyone has, or knows someone who lives with, some sort of food allergy. And how can you catch food allergies in kids? Especially the younger kids who can’t yet communicate well. Dr. Glen Ello, a pediatrician with Trios Medical Group, was kind enough to sit down with us and answer all of our food allergy questions.

Before we go any further, let’s define “food allergy.” What does that phrase mean?

A food allergy is when the body exhibits an allergic response to a food item, either internally or externally. This response is triggered by a person’s immune system and usually involves swelling, rashes, or digestive upset, but can be as serious as closed airways or anaphylactic shock. A true allergic reaction to a food happens almost immediately after exposure. And you don’t have to eat a food to have a reaction to it, some people can break out in hives just from touching a certain food. True food allergies affect up to 8-10% of kids, and around 2-3% of adults.

This isn’t to say that allergies are worse than intolerances, just different responses. Neither Jayden nor Callie is a very happy camper when they eat tomatoes, and they probably both wish to avoid nightshades at all cost.

We asked Dr. Ello why it seems that food allergies have spiked in recent years. His answer was twofold: For starters, there is a whole lot more awareness about food issues now than there were a few decades ago. Secondly, many people group allergies and intolerance into the same category.

Since awareness of food allergies has been such a hot topic in recent years, the science behind food allergies and what we know about our body’s responses are still evolving. We know more now than we did ten years ago, and Dr. Ello believes that in another ten years we’ll understand even more. What we do know now is that a true allergy is caused when your body decides that whatever input (food type) is a threat and starts attacking it.

“There is a whole lot more awareness about food issues now than there were a few decades ago. (And) many people group allergies and intolerance into the same category.”

Now here’s where it gets tricky- Food sensitivities are not considered true food allergies. A food sensitivity or food intolerance is still pretty uncomfortable, but the body’s reaction isn’t triggered by the immune system, and therefore isn’t a true allergy.

For example: Callie is allergic to tomatoes and other nightshade vegetables, if she touches a tomato her skin breaks out immediately, if she eats it her throat starts swelling and her whole body breaks out in hives, she also may complain about dizziness and start throwing up. On the other side: Jayden has a intolerance to the same tomatoes, if he eats a tomato, a few hours later his stomach gets really upset, he can’t sleep that night, and he’ll spend most of the next day sitting on the toilet. Jayden’s problem is a gut issue, Callie’s is a immune system response.

There has been some fascinating research done on the antibody allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE). Turns out that every person has a tolerance level for every different type of food or input, these tolerances can vary per food/allergen. Once your tolerance level is reached for that specific allergen, your body will trigger an immune system response.

That all sounds really complicated and technical, but it’s pretty simple. Every person has a tolerance threshold for eggs: some people could never eat enough eggs at one time that they would exhibit signs of a reaction. For other people that threshold is non-existant, so even traces of eggs will cause a reaction- this is what we call an allergy.

That same tolerance level, and the IgE process, is why we can do blood testing for allergies. When blood testing for egg allergies, the lab will expose your blood to eggs and watch for those IgE markers to pop up. If markers appear then you probably have an allergy; how many markers appear will determine where on the sliding scale (mild to severe) your allergy falls.

eats shellfish for the first time their body might have an allergic reaction, even though they showed negative for shellfish allergy on their testing. This is why most doctors aren’t always quick to prescribe allergy testing for very young children.

You can allergy test babies, but the test results may not be as useful as you would hope.

So let’s talk about allergy tests:

You’ve most likely heard of the notion that baby’s first foods should be introduced one at a time and staggered over several months. There’s a reason for that, and it all comes back to food allergies.

Some people claim that staggering food introductions can prevent food allergies. Dr. Ello says this idea is definitely helpful to identify potential allergic reactions. Babies should be at least 4-6 months old before taking their first bites of “real food.” “Be really conservative when introducing new foods.” Stay with one new item at a time, and space new food introduction a couple weeks apart, if possible. This will allow you to see exactly how your baby reacts to each food item. If you feed your 8 month old something like chicken noodle soup and they have a clear allergic reaction, you won’t have any idea which food triggered the attack. But if you introduced carrots, noodles, chicken, and celery individually and over the course of a couple weeks; you would be able to see that “hey, it looks like baby has a reaction to noodles.” You could then start looking at a possible wheat allergy from there.

When we asked about this, Dr. Ello was quick to point out the different types of allergy tests: scratch tests vs. blood tests. Ever had a scratch test? Your body is marked into quadrants and each area is injected with a tiny bit of different allergens. Technicians watch your skin for reactions. No reaction= no allergy. Dr. Ello says that he doesn’t usually recommend scratch tests for his younger patients, because it can be somewhat traumatic. “We have a hard enough time getting some kids to sit for one shot, 60 shots can be terrifying.” Blood tests are what we described above, where you go in for a blood draw and then the lab exposes your blood to allergens and counts the markers- much less scary for little kids! The only problem is that neither test is foolproof, and both tests only account for a small range of foods.

When testing for food allergies most doctors will start with the most common allergens:

-Eggs -Wheat (and/or Gluten) -Dairy -Peanuts -Shellfish Other tests are definitely available, and there are a wide range of possible tests, but this list is usually where they start. It’s also interesting to note that allergies run in the family. Kids with one parent who has allergies (food or otherwise) are 50% likely to have allergies themselves. If both parents have allergies, then there’s a 75% chance of the child ending up with an allergy.

The biggest challenge with blood testing for allergies is that your test will only turn positive for allergens your body has previously come in contact with. For example: shellfish. Dr. Ello says that a classic case is when a young child (toddler) comes in for allergy testing, gets the full bloodwork panel, and shows no allergy for something like shellfish.

Now, how many toddlers have actually eaten shellfish? If the child has never been exposed to shellfish before, then there won’t be any IgE markers show up on the test. Years later when that kid 18

Starting Solids

It’s also possible that breastfed babies can have reactions to something the mother is eating. The most common culprits are too much caffeine (sorry mom), seafood, dairy, wheat, and spicy foods. This is why some doctors also advise mom to eat mainly whole foods in the first few months of breastfeeding- so that if baby is suddenly fussy and obviously upset, it’s much easier for mom to determine if her diet had anything to do with it. If baby always starts crying after an early afternoon nursing, then maybe it has something to do with mom’s breakfast of wheat based cereal and milk (this is a conversation to have with your doctor).

The good news is that just because baby has a negative reaction to something they received through breastmilk, doesn’t mean baby will automatically have an allergic reaction to the same food when they eat it themselves later on.

Living With Food Allergies

Alright, so now you have a food allergy diagnosis; what next? Dr. Ello says that the single, best way to combat food allergies is to avoid the allergen in the first place. This is why it’s so important to identify what you’re allergic to. Yes, there are Kid’s Play Magazine, Fall 2015

medications you can take to help cope with allergy symptoms, but allergy sufferers usually find the best quality of life by just avoiding the food all together.

An allergy diagnosis is more than just a set of test results. Your doctor will also take into account your history of reactions (or not) to specific allergens.

You’ll likely spend a fair amount of time playing detective. When you go home with an allergy diagnosis your doctor will have discussed the big picture with you and helped you determine if this is a true allergy or more of a sensitivity issue.

Whether allergy or intolerance; a diagnosis can be overwhelming news. You leave the doctor’s office wondering “ok, so what CAN I eat?” This is where those labels we mentioned earlier come in really handy.

Those first few weeks after a food allergy diagnosis are definitely the most stressful. You’ll become a pro at reading ingredient lists. And you really do have to read Every. Single. Label. You’ll find allergens lurking in the strangest places. Did you know soy sauce is mostly wheat? Or that most bread is made with milk?

Or that there might be traces of eggs in your granola bars?

It takes some time and experience to discover what changes you can sustainably make to your diet to avoid whatever it is you’re allergic to, and still feel like you have food options left. Diet changes are best started at home, where you can control exactly what goes into your food. Once you feel a little more confident, there are many restaurants that work with special dietary needs. Just be aware that very few commercial kitchens are truly allergen free, and especially in a busy restaurant, you may run the risk of cross contamination.

Talk With Your Doctor

Food allergies can be scary, especially in life threatening cases like severe peanut or shellfish reactions.

If you suspect that you or a child may have an allergy, the first thing to do is to consult with your doctor. Dr. Ello says that personal research is great, but don’t decide you have a wheat allergy based off a survey you found on the internet. Bring your research to your doctor’s appointment and go over the information with a professional. Discovering and removing an allergen from your diet definitely increases your quality of life, but make sure you’re using your doctor as a resource in that journey.

An Ounce of Prevention

One of the goals of the Benton Franklin Health District (BFHD) is to help catch and obtain treatment for developmental delays in young children. Public Health Nurse Robin Henle shares about BFHD’s efforts to help parents proactively assess and deal with developmental concerns.

If you’ve ever looked at another 3 year old on a playground and thought to yourself “no way my 3 year old can do that” accompanied by a flash moment of worry about whether your child is “on track” – welcome to the parent club, you’re not alone.

Just about every parent has had at least one moment where they worried about whether their child was developing at a healthy pace. It kind of comes with the territory of being a mom or dad.

But what do you do when your worry becomes more than just a passing concern? Who do you turn to when you really are nervous that there might be a problem?

Don’t enter your concerns into a search engine (that can scare you to death), there are good, reputable surveys you can use, and we’ll show you where to find them.

First off, here are some things to keep in mind: -90% of brain development happens within the first five years of a child’s life.

-Currently, one in 6 kids in WA State has some sort of developmental delay/disorder.

-In Washington State only 25% of kids will receive a developmental screen at any point in their childhood (The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends general developmental screening at 9, 18, and 24/30 months of age).

-Only 30% of children in the United States with developmental delays will be identified before beginning kindergarten, even though the majority of children with delays will exhibit some signs or symptoms by the age of two.

These are some scary statistics, but the good news is that many developmental delays can be alleviated, especially if detected early!

In the first five years the brain grows faster than at any other time in a child’s life, which makes this a critical time for learning and development. During these early years, the brain is very adaptable, or what scientists call “plastic.” This means that even if a delay is detected in a child, with access to the right interventions and treatment, further progression of the delay can be prevented.

With early interventions, treatment will likely be less intensive, have a shorter duration, cost less, and most importantly have a much greater impact on overall health and development throughout the child’s life than intervening at a later time.

Children do not just “grow out of ” a developmental delay, and so the “Wait and See” approach is never appropriate. Delayed treatment or lack of intervention leads to a greater risks down the road. Kids that enter kindergarten with delays can have a hard time keeping up, though, sadly, that’s when most delays are recognized. It’s much better for children if we can find the delays before kids ever get behind in school.

But how do you identify developmental delays? The simple answer is: surveillance AND screening. And by screening we’re not just referring to the couple questions that the nurse asks at your child’s well child visit, though those questions can definitely help. What BFHD recommends is a standardized screening by the person who knows the child best (that’s YOU, mom and dad).

A developmental screening is different than developmental surveillance.

Developmental screening is the use of a scientifically validated screening tool designed to detect children that may need referral for a more thorough assessment and possible early intervention services.

Developmental surveillance is a checklist of yes/no questions asked by a physician (examples from a 9 month well baby check- Can your child hold a bottle?

Is your child afraid of strangers? Can your child sit up? Is your child crawling?)

Developmental screening however looks for strengths and concerns in one of more of the following five areas: Cognitive-ability to learn and how a child learns; Physical/sensory- ability to move, see and hear; Communication- ability to understand language and express needs; Social/emotional- ability to relate with others; Adaptive Skills- ability to dress, eat and take care of themselves.

A screening tool does not provide a diagnosis of developmental problems: it can only indicate the need of further assessment or that a child is on track developmentally. But a screening tool is the first step in determining whether your child is on track.

Which tool to use?

The biggest challenge to screening for developmental delays is knowing which tool to use. There are literally thousands of checklists floating around on the internet- how do you know which one is reputable?

Two of the most valid and reliable tools are The Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) and the Parent’s Evaluation of Developmental Status (PEDS).

BFHD uses the ASQ because it is so easily accessible and designed to be administered by the parent themselves.

The ASQ is appropriate for children birth to 66 months and is designed to be completed by parents, while the PEDS is appropriate for children up to the age of 8, but is designed to be completed in the clinic setting by the physician. They are both quick, easy to administer, and usually only takes 10- 15 minutes to complete.

After you’ve completed the survey, you’ll have a good idea of any trouble areas in your child’s development. And once you have the screening results in hand, then it’s time to set up an appointment with your doctor. You might want to specify when setting up the appointment that you’d like to go over screening results with your doctor (so the staff knows to set aside a little extra time for your visit).

Make sure you take your screening results and any questions to your appointment with you. And don’t allow yourself to feel rushed- this is important!

Why be proactive?

Parents obviously know their children best. And one of the reasons so many developmental delays go undetected is because mom or dad might not know what to look for, and a dozen quick questions at your well child visit just doesn’t cover all the bases.

What BFHD hopes to do is to empower parents to use the resources available to assess their child’s development on their own. Then parents can come to well child visits with a solid picture for their doctor to see. With this information, parents and doctors can work together to determine if a delay exists and what help options/next steps are available.

As we mentioned earlier, many developmental delays go undetected until kids get to kindergarten. Then, halfway through the school year your child finally starts getting the help your family needs. By this time the child is usually behind in schoolwork and starts spending most of their time playing catch up. BUT, if that same child’s delay was discovered at an earlier age, and began getting professional assistance to overcome their delay, then they potentially could enter elementary school on track and empowered to learn at the same pace as their classmates.

Trust your gut

Remember, if you have a concern, it’s best to find out if your fears are valid. Developmental delays aren’t something you want to mess around with, especially when screening is so easy to administer. Early Intervention can have such a positive impact on a child’s life.

Make your own slime (with glitter!)

You’ll need: -Borax (available in the laundry soap section of any grocery store) -Glue (glittery or plain) -Water -Two glass bowls Optional: Glitter and food coloring Pour 1 cup of water in your larger bowl and add 1 teaspoon of borax. Stir until dissolved.

Add 1 Tablespoon of water to your smaller bowl and dump in the entire container of glue. We added ½ teaspoon of glitter and 2 drops of food coloring to our plain glue. Mix together well.

All at once dump the glue mixture into the borax mixture and let the kids squish away. The borax makes the glue solidify into slime. Don’t keep the glue in the borax too long or it can harden too much. Once your slime is the desired consitency, take it out of the borax water and play to your heart’s content. When you’re done playing, store it in a glass jar with a lid.

We thought the consistency of the plain glue slime was better than the glitter glue, it squished better. But the glitter glue slime was definitely more vibrant in color and sparkle.

Hint: if your slime is still too slim-y, put it back in the borax water and squish around for a few more seconds. It will keep solidifying as long as it’s in the borax water.

Another hint: you don’t want to pour the glue into the borax water too slowly, you’ll end up with hard chunks in your slime.

Also, don’t eat it. Poison control told us that you would have to eat a lot of borax and glue to be in any danger, but we still would recommend keeping slime out of little mouths.
