She’s hired! I’d like to introduce you to the newest member of the Kid’s Play Magazine team- Gretchen Lopez.

If you’ve been following Kid’s Play Magazine this year you already know it’s been an interesting ride. Last issue I announced that I was hiring for a new assistant and kicked off a candidate search. Thank you so much to all of you who applied. The only place I posted the search was here in Kid’s Play, and we received SO many qualified applicants. I feel so blessed by such a quality talent pool to choose from.

So, about that cover story- I talk a lot about the background for this article in the story, and how this idea came to be- but it bears repeating. This story came from one sentence, said in passing, in a different meeting: the notion of “in-season and out of season jeans.” I mentally chewed on the statement for weeks until finally I knew we HAD to write about it. This article really took on a life of its own and CBRC gives us some excellent advice on how to reach our health and fitness goals- including some info I’d never heard before and am looking forward to implementing.

I’ll be real with you in saying that my biggest challenge is resting- both sleeping and just relaxing.

Those who know me personally know a person who is always going and rarely slows down. It’s just how life happens for our family. But I’ve realized an important lesson the past two years, since the birth of our youngest daughter, that going wide open 24/7 is a recipe for utter exhaustion. I’ve hit that wall many times, and I always feel a bit sheepish when I do- logically, I know that staying up working most of the night, then charging through the day with 3 kids is a bad idea, but it doesn’t send me to bed any sooner. And in terms of fitness, my mentality has always been “well, I can’t take a day off, I’ll lose my momentum.” I took a lot of Morgan’s advice in this article to heart, especially as I did some further research on statistics that back up her recommendations.

About a year ago, our family started implementing a “rest afternoon.” An afternoon on the weekend where we specifically didn’t plan anything huge- sometimes we sit and play board games, sometimes we hang out with friends and do nothing collectively (it’s great!), or other times we pack up the family and go for a leisurely bike ride or family hike. It’s been really hard to work these hours of “downtime” into our busy schedule- but my husband put it very well when he observed that “because I know I’m going to take an afternoon off, I work a lot harder the other days to get everything done.”

I think that applies to so many things: exercise, work schedules, homework, yard work, etc. And I think this is a great skill to teach our kids. I use that word with purpose: skill. Being able to take time to recharge and relax has been a Skill I’ve had to LEARN. And I am still learning. But I believe, and research shows, that it is so important.

Relaxing in the summer vs. relaxing in the start of the school year are two different beasts. But I’m confident that if we PLAN for downtime and “work really hard the other days” that we can carry this habit into a hectic September. Will you join me in making this school year the one where we intentionally take some time to recharge?

YMCA Healthy Tips Corner Internet Safety

The internet can be both a great place full of ideas, resources and fun, and a negative place with images, videos and people that may frighten or hurt your children. As parents, it can be intimidating to try and navigate how to protect your kids and teach them how to be wise and safe on the internet.

Here are a few helpful tips and resources for you and your family to use to make sure your interactions with the online world are safe and balanced.

Some tops tips are: • Keep computer and internet use in common areas of the home • Set time limits for internet use • Set boundaries for which websites your kids can use • Check out and explore the websites your kids want to use or are using • Teach your children to ask before downloading anything • Encourage your children to tell you about anything making them uncomfortable • Encourage your children to tell you if they receive messages that make them feel uncomfortable, are cruel, or are designed to hurt themselves or someone else • Talk to children about not sharing any personal information online • Supervise younger children while they use the internet and talk about internet use in a non-threatening way with teens • Encourage them to think carefully before sending or posting anything • Learn about parental controls and search settings of your computer and other devices • Learn about Cyberbullying, and how to talk to your kids about it Overall, teaching your children how to be safe on the internet is about keeping the communications lines open. Talk to them about the internet, about the things they like on it, and let them know they can and should talk to you if they see or experience something online that makes them feel strange, scared, or unsure.

We talk a lot about Diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2, in this issue of Kid’s Play. And with good reason!

November is National and/or American Diabetes Month.

The purpose of this month is to raise awareness and support for the people living with Diabetes.

(From Diabetes.org) • Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.

• Another 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes.

• The American Diabetes Association estimates that the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $245 billion.

Just to give you scope for those facts- The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the United States population to be about 322.7 Million people. That means about 27.7% of our population have prediabetes (Type 2 Diabetes).

Simple Changes

really can make all the difference

We’ll talk more about how sometimes stories turn into other stories on page 16 of this issue.

Here’s another example of that fact- as we were talking to Columbia Basin Racquet Club for the ”Life Changes” article (pg 16) we got “sidetracked” talking about the term prediabetes. CBRC told us that several years ago they were involved in a pilot program with the CDC (Center for Disease Control) to help people with prediabetes try to manage their weight and diet to help prevent type 2 diabetes. But- they were overwhelmed with people with type 2 diabetes who wanted to participate as well. CBRC told us that due to the research based structure of that first program, they couldn’t open it up to people with type 2 diabetes. However, because of that interest Kadlec Regional Medical Center and CBRC have teamed up to create a program called “Simple Changes. Big Rewards” which is open to anyone in the prediabetes category AND those who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Simple Changes. Big Rewards is a 12 week program that focuses on helping people learn healthy eating and exercise habits. Its purpose is to give participants a healthy starting point on which to base their life changes and combat the risk of contracting type 2 diabetes.

Half of the program (Tuesday sessions) takes place at the Kadlec Healthplex in Richland and includes advice and presentations on healthy eating, lifestyle changes, and self-care and management. The other half of the Simple Changes program is held at CBRC (Thursdays) and features coaching on healthy activity, staying motivated, and exercising.

What is type 2 diabetes?

And how is it different that Type 1 Diabetes that we discuss on page 11?

What are the signs of Type 2 Diabetes?

People who have one or more of the following risk factors should talk to their doctor about getting their blood sugar tested: -Being overweight.

-Being 45 years or older.

-Having a family history of type 2 diabetes.

-Being physically active less than 3 times a week.

-Ever having gestational diabetes or giving birth to a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds.

This from the CDC: “Definition of type 2 diabetes: People with type 2 diabetes either don’t make enough insulin or can’t use insulin properly. Insulin allows blood sugar (glucose) to enter cells, where it can be used for energy. When the body doesn’t have enough insulin or can’t use it effectively, blood sugar builds up in the blood. High blood sugar levels can lead to heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation of toes, feet, or legs.”

The differences between Type 2 and Type 1 Diabetes: In Type 1 Diabetes, as described in Ellie’s story on page 11, the immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. Type 2 Diabetes doesn’t involve the immune system- but the cells that produce insulin either don’t work properly, or your body doesn’t absorb insulin effectively, leading to either insulin deficiency or insulin resistance.

“More than a third of American adults—around 86 million—have prediabetes, and 90% of them don’t know it. With prediabetes, blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as diabetes. People with prediabetes have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Structured lifestyle change programs (such as the Simple Changes. Big Rewards. program) can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as 58%.”

The Simple Changes program not only coaches people on HOW to make lifestyle changes, but also provides support and encouragement of people working through the same challenges. Programs like this one have been so effective across the country that some insurance companies (even Medicare) are beginning to see the benefits. The American Diabetes Association (Diabetes.org) reports that we may even see Medicare coverage of approved Diabetes Prevention Programs in the next several years (which is great news all around as this may set an example for private insurers as well).

Type 2 diabetes, or being described as prediabetes, is NOT a life sentence. If there’s one good difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes it’s this: you may be able to prevent and delay type 2 Diabetes. And those who have been officially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes can often control the disease with diet and exercise (medication is often a part of the equation as well- always defer to your doctor’s individual advice).

Whether with a formal program, or on your own: reducing your body weight by 5-7%, staying physically active for a minimum of 150 minutes a week, coupled with healthy eating changes can move many people out of the prediabetes category.

Remember that it takes about 16 weeks to form a healthy habit. People who set out with encouragement and support are often the most successful, both in making the initial change, and in maintaining that change- so surround yourself with positive support!

Ellie’s Story

A local family’s journey into Type 1 Diabetes

What would you do if your child suddenly started showing the following symptoms?

-Lethargy/exhaustion

-Frequent urination/sudden bedwetting

-Increased appetite, accompanied by weight loss

-Extreme thirst

-Vision changes

The White family has had a life shaking kind of year. Last winter their 5 year old daughter, Ellie, started acting different. Ellie is an active, fun loving, super spunky little girl. But in the first week back to school this January Ellie was tired, weary, and had no interest in her favorite things; she didn’t even have the energy to argue with her brothers. Friends began asking if Ellie was feeling well, and, even though there were no visible signs of illness, the whole family could tell that something was not quite right.

One evening, as Ellie’s mom was lying with her at bedtime, she noticed that Ellie’s breathing was labored and shallow. Ellie’s parents took her into the Emergency Room and discovered that her blood sugar was through the roof and she had a high concentration of sugar (glucose) in her urine. Ellie was headed into a life threatening condition called Diabetic Ketoacidosis (which can lead to organ failure, coma, and even death). They had made it to the hospital just in time. The nurses told them “if you had waited until tomorrow, we would’ve had to airlift her to a pediatric hospital.”

In the days and months following, the White family has received the crash course on Type 1 Diabetes (referred to in the past as “Childhood” or “Juvenile Diabetes”). Ellie stayed in the hospital for three days as the doctors worked to rehydrate her with IV fluids and stabilize her insulin/glucose levels. Nurses taught Mom and Dad how to measure Ellie’s blood sugar, track her food intake, and administer the 5 shots a day that help to keep her insulin levels stable. It was a huge leap- Ellie’s mom, Melanie, says “We hit the ground running. There really isn’t a gradual process once you get this diagnosis.”

What is Type 1 Diabetes? It is a commonly misunderstood disease that affects up to 3 million Americans. “Each year, more than 15,000 children and 15,000 adults—approximately 80 people per day—are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the U.S.” (Junior Diabetes Research Foundation, www.JDRF.com) Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that we can’t understand yet. No one knows what causes it (there are expert speculations, but no one knows for sure, yet). There is also no cure for the disease at this time. Unlike some other “childhood” conditions, you can’t grow out of Type 1 Diabetes eitherthis is a lifetime diagnosis. (continued on next page) Kid’s Play Magazine, Fall 2016

What we call Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the pancreas stops (or greatly reduces) insulin production.

The immune system in a person with Type 1 Diabetes begins to attack the parts of the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin is a very important hormone that moves glucose into your cells. That glucose (or sugar) is what fuels your cells and keeps your body going. If your body doesn’t produce insulin, then your cells can’t get the sugar they need. This causes two immediate problems- Your cells begin to starve and can’t function properly, and, secondly, all of the glucose in your entire body stays stuck in your bloodstream. Your body frantically starts trying to get rid of the excess glucose via urination (see symptoms above). This can lead to increased appetite as your brain tries to tell you that you need more fuel, however, as your body keeps trying to remove the glucose you may start to lose weight as food never gets properly utilized.

And those are just the first complications. Conditions such as Diabetic Ketoacidosis, which Ellie was beginning to experience, can send your body into a coma.

Other complications of uncontrolled Type 1 Diabetes include eye damage, kidney damage, nerve damage, heart disease, and skin conditions.

While there may not yet be a cure for Type 1 Diabetes, there are treatments available. Insulin injections and frequent monitoring of glucose levels can help people of T1D to live active and relatively normal lives.

There are two major pieces of treatment for Type 1 Diabetes: -Monitoring blood sugar/glucose levels. This is done with finger prick testing, and, recently, with a new device called a Continuous Glucose Monitor (or CGM for short).

-Administering insulin. This is done with injections of two different types of insulin: Basal insulin is a long acting insulin administered via shot every 24 hours (or as prescribed). Basal insulin carries your blood sugar levels through periods of fasting (like at night).

Bolus insulin is a fast acting variety that can be given as needed (using info gathered from glucose testing).

Bolus insulin is often administered in direct response to carbohydrates consumed. Insulin pumps deliver basal insulin 24 hours a day, as needed or prescribed, through a tiny catheter inserted under the skin. The pump will also deliver bolus insulin for food or blood sugar correction when directed to do so by the user.

-Food and activity play into this equation as well.

Type 1 Diabetes requires that you constantly monitor your carbohydrate intake- that carb count directly affects your bolus insulin dosage. Since every person processes carbohydrates differently, it is especially important to work with your doctor and dietician to determine proper insulin dosages for each person.

Blood sugar and Insulin levels require constant oversight. With Type 1 Diabetes, if blood sugar levels fall too LOW then you’ll go into hypoglycemia: which can cause unconsciousness and serious complications. If blood sugar levels go too HIGH then you’ll experience hyperglycemia, which is what Ellie was experiencing when she went into the ER. Severe hyperglycemia can end in coma and organ failure.

Ellie uses a relatively new (recent to market) device called a Continuous Glucose Monitor (mentioned above). The CGM is a small device, about the size of an adult’s thumb, that is inserted using a tiny needle and leaves a tiny glucose sensor under your skin. A transmitter attaches to this sensor and sends real time blood sugar information to a receiver or via Bluetooth to an iPhone (currently only compatible with Apple phones). The transmitter sends new information every 5 minutes, regardless of where the wearer is. With this device Ellie’s parents have been able to remotely monitor her blood sugar while she’s at school or at friends’ houses. The device also sends an alarm to attached phones if Ellie’s blood sugar ever gets too high or low. While the device isn’t perfect- there are some false nighttime alarms, and the reaction time for a CGM is about 15 minutes later than the results you can get with a finger prick testEllie’s mom says this gives them huge peace of mind, has reduced the number of nighttime finger prick testing, and has helped them understand exactly how T1D affects Ellie’s body. Each day’s data is automatically compiled into a graph which helps Ellie’s parents and doctors see exactly how the day’s food and activity relate to her blood sugar.

There are several different types of insulin pumps – Ellie is currently still in the process of getting a pump so her parents have to administer her insulin manually with many small injections. The whole family is looking forward to the day when a pump can take the place of constant calculations and shots.

Traditional insulin pumps are attached to the wearer with a catheter, then connected to a small pack with a tube. This pack contains the “brains” of the pump and the insulin stores. The wearer can program carbohydrate intake into the pump’s computer, then the pump automatically delivers the necessary insulin dose.

The insulin pump Ellie is waiting for is also a relatively new design. The whole thing is just a few inches square and holds the insulin stores right there- no tubes or pack required (which can be very important for a super active kid). Ellie’s parents still need to program in the number of carbs consumed and monitor the insulin dosage. However, one of the goals of T1D researchers is to eventually have two devices that work together so seamlessly that the person wearing them doesn’t even have to think about it.

Testing is in process to produce a new pump which can communicate directly with the CGM and operates without the wearer’s help or input. The seamless communication of these two devices is referred to as an “artificial pancreas.” The technology isn’t quite there yet, but encouraging progress has taken place the last few years.

Ellie’s mom, Melanie, says that she wouldn’t wish this disease on anyone “but if this had to happen to a kid, Ellie is the kid who can handle it. Ellie is brave, feisty, and so independent; she has risen to this challenge.

She inspires ME.” The White family says that this year has deepened their appreciation for so many things: their family, their faith, and the preciousness of life. They’re also very grateful for all the doctors and experts that have come alongside and helped them re-learn life with T1D. Melanie originally approached us with this story idea because she wanted to help other families learn the signs. “We just didn’t know. Hindsight is always much clearer, but there were so many signs we missed because we didn’t know anything about this disease. If we had to do it over again we would’ve recognized Ellie’s condition so much faster.” Unfortunately there are cases where children develop T1D and the parents and doctors don’t recognize the disease until it is too late. Thankfully Ellie made it to the hospital in time, and has recovered well- but not everyone does.

We agree- we hope that this article is a seed. And if ever you are faced with the symptoms described here, that you’ll immediately seek medical assistance. You never know- this could save a life.

Just add color:

There are so many cool things you can do with food coloring, and they don’t have to be complicated in order to be fun!

Colorful Carnations

Special Thanks to: See ad page 26

All you need: -White carnation flowers (available at most grocery stores) -Food coloring -A knife -Tap water -A couple of containers -Patience Note: PARENT HELP IS NEEDED FOR THIS! Splitting the stems is dangerous and HAS to be done by an adult!

Cut the carnation stem to a manageable length (you don’t want them so tall they fall out of the vase). Using the knife and a cutting board, have AN ADULT carefully slice the stem about halfway up, you’ll need one section of stem for each color. Fill your containers a few inches full of strongly colored water (we used about 10 drops per vase and could’ve used more).

Set your flowers in a safe place and wait 24-48 hours.

As the carnations soak up water they will slowly change color.

You can have lots of conversations about cells, xylem (tiny tubes in the flower stalks), mineral distribution, and other cool things you have to ask google about.

Or you can just admire the pretty flowers- your choice ;)

Color Mixing

This is so simple, it seems embarrassing to write up a description for it.

Really- it’s just playing with colored water.

However, all of our kids love this little activity and ask for it often.

You’ll need: -Clear jars or glasses (use clear plastic cups if you’re worried about breaking glass) -Food coloring -Tap water Fill up half the jars with water and let the kids add food coloring. The darker colors are really cool to watch slowly swirl and spread into the water. Then let the kids mix the colored water into the empty jars and see what colors they can come up with. It’s amazing how long this keeps kids entertained!

You can talk about the color wheel and primary vs. secondary colors- or just enjoy the peace and quiet and let them play. :)

Life Changes

A different kind of health and fitness article

This summer I was collaborating with Columbia Basin Racquet Club on a different (non Kid’s Play related) project.

I was sitting there talking to several members of CBRC’s management team about kids’ fitness when their Fitness Director made a passing comment about how she tells her 16 and 17 year old soccer girls that they will have “in season and out of season jeans, and those may differ by as much as 4 sizes.”

Our conversation went on that afternoon, but days, and even weeks, later I was still coming back to that comment. I called up CBRC and said- this is a total rabbit trail, but there’s a really important story here, I’m sure of it!

Here’s why that comment/concept is so important- how many adults, especially women (this is where I raise my hand as well) beat ourselves up constantly for weight fluctuations and how regular LIFE affects our waistline? And here is a fitness professional telling TEENAGERS- girls who are the most fit they will probably ever be in life- that “you’re not going to be the same size year round/all the time.” Wow. While there is some great info in here for both moms and dads (and non-parents, and grandparents, and everybody), I chose to focus a bulk of this story towards women with kids.

That’s my personal frame of reference and it helped me to disseminate the concepts we talked about.

We sat down with Morgan Fewel, CBRC Fitness Director and CSCS Certified Personal Trainer, and several other CBRC management members to explore how the idea of weight fluctuation relates to adults. “Tell me more about this idea.

Pretend I’m just walking through the front door and know nothing- what would you say?”

The first thing Morgan told us was to chuck our scales in the garbage can. “No really, just throw it away. It tells you nothing.” Except maybe how much water you should be drinking each day (more on that later). This is a really hard concept for us, especially as women, and especially because there are so many mixed messages out there. Take, for example, the sign I stare at while waiting in line at Fred Meyer which states that “weighing yourself every day can help you lose weight and keep the weight off.” Also in that grocery line I’m faced with publications of all types (and varying reputations)- but even the legit fitness magazines are touting “lose 5lbs before____” or “How to keep the weight off.” Notice that: lose pounds, lose weight? That must be what we need to do to feel healthy, right?

And then we go to the doctor’s office- and what’s the first thing they do? Weigh you. Fully clothed, probably wearing shoes, maybe right after lunch? It ties back into our thinking that the scale is an all-important number. Your doctor then takes that (possibly faulty?) scale number and relates it to your height to get a general BMI number (or Body Mass Index- which is supposed to estimate what percentage of your weight is body fat).

Morgan tells us that the number staring back on the scale is just a number- it’s only a simple snapshot of how much you weigh at that given moment, which may or may not be how much you’ll weigh tomorrow, or even a few hours from now.

Your scale measurement is determined and affected by so many things: How much water you drank that day. Whether you’re stressed. If you’re retaining water. If you just ate lunch.

If you’ve got some inflammation going on. And the list could go on. What that number doesn’t tell you is whether you’ve Kid’s Play Magazine, Fall 2016

traded fat for muscle, or if you’re in better shape physically than you were a week ago. How many times have you spent an entire week (or perhaps longer) eating everything you’re supposed to, staying active- you’re feeling so much better than you did a week ago, your favorite jeans are even a tiny bit looserbut then you step on the scale and it’s the same (or higher) than last week? Chances are good that your happiness, and a good portion of your resolve, just melted into a big puddle- all because of a shiny number.

BUT, there are some numbers that DO matter, and that you should be paying attention to. Circumference is a good thing to watch. Body fat (using accurate testing methods- such as BodPod, caliper testing, and others) is another number that’s important. Both of these numbers are directly related to your overall fitness. And it’s a lot harder to fool these numbers.

When you start trading fat for muscle, your overall body fat is going to start decreasing (though the scale might show that you’ve gained weight). When you start to lose fat, you’ll see those results show up on the tape measure. Body fat and measurements aren’t going to be as subjective to daily fluctuations ( ok yeah, your waistline and turkey dinner are definitely related, but your bicep and thigh measurements aren’t going to increase after a single helping of candied sweet potatoes).

Here’s the other reason that the scale should be thrown away: Pregnancy. Yes, doctors use the scale to measure many things during pregnancy- but it’s often very hard to watch those numbers climb higher as your baby grows. And then once you finally give birth, you’ve delivered this little baby and all the fluids surrounding him/her.

After your first baby you’re all excited to step on the scale.

(Mentally going through: “Ok, baby was 8lbs, guessing placenta is another 2lbs? Plus all that water- So. Much. Water. I’ve got to be down at least 15 lbs, easy!) But you’re not. The scale says something dumb like -4 lbs from before birth. What the heck?! Seriously. Just the baby weighed more than that. You feel smaller, you look smaller, your poor ankles are finally visibleand the scale says a measly 4 pounds. I think Morgan is rightthat number on the scale tells us nothing.

And mamas- please, please, please- if ever there was a time in your life that you need to be kind to yourself, it’s right after you have a baby. We live in a society where airbrushed models post “victorious” selfies just days or weeks after pushing out a baby- proclaiming things like “got my body back!” We all know it isn’t real, that those photos are sucked in, photoshopped, and over-hyped. Or the celebrities who claim to be “back in pre-baby shape” at 6 weeks- that family has a chef, a nanny, a personal fitness coach. But we still make comparisons, don’t we? (Every once in a long while there is a mother who really does magically drop the baby weight- but our point is, don’t look at a photo and assume to know the whole story- we don’t know that mom’s journey. Chances are good that the “magical” transformation wasn’t such an easy road in reality.)

Having a baby is a long, complicated process; it’s unrealistic to think that the journey back to your fitness goals would be anything different. It’s hard while dealing with post-birth, new baby hormones to look in the mirror and remember that this is just a phase. But, it really is, especially in the first few months post-partum, just focus on taking CARE of yourself (and baby).

Taking care of your body in the first few months, and not pushing or stressing things can actually help you later on when you do decide that “you know, I’m feeling like a human again- let’s get active and healthy and change the way I feel when I look in the mirror.”

Life Events- Changes all “around”

We’ve been talking specifically about babies as a life event, but so many other events can have an effect on your health as well, and these events aren’t just related to mothers. A change in jobs, going back to school, your youngest kid going IN to school, an illness in the family, being primary caregiver to an elderly relative- this list could go on forever. Each of these events are chapters, each are going to require different attention attention to your health and fitness goals. Did you just move from an active job to a desk job, or go back to school and find yourself sitting a lot more? You might want to look at making that activity up in other areas. Are you caring for a sick or failing family member? You’ll have to be more purposeful in making sure you take care of YOU too. The bottom line here (no pun intended) is that what works in one season of life, isn’t necessarily going to work in all seasons. And just like the teen girls in our introduction, you might just be a different size in December than you are in July- all based on what is going on in your life. We need to stop looking at size fluctuation as a reason for beating ourselves up! Are you healthy, do you feel good, are you consistently active? <- these are the more important questions!

But how do we work towards a healthier body?

It really boils down to taking care of yourself- if you don’t give your body what it needs, your body can’t work properly.

Food. Morgan tells us that most women don’t eat enough-

that they don’t consume enough calories. Why is that?

For one, Mamas are super busy: chasing kids, up all night with babies, trying to juggle work and family, trying to make sure everyone ELSE is taken care of. How many moms drink coffee for breakfast, eat the kids’ leftovers for lunch, or maybe work straight through their lunchbreak, then realize that by 4 p.m. that “I might be starving to actual death” (or it feels like it:)?

Second, many of us are still stuck in the (old) mindset that you have to eat less to lose fat and meet your fitness goals. Morgan tells us this just isn’t true. You do need to make sure you are eating better foods, but if you are trying to trade fat for muscleyou actually need to eat MORE food. CBRC’s Certified Nutrition Specialist, Jeni Asmus, tells members that while they are trying to lose fat, they need to eat three full meals, AND three good snacks- so eat every 2-4 hours. The emphasis here is on better, quality food. Ideally all of your meals are going to contain a protein, a carbohydrate, at least one fruit/vegetable, and a fat. Morgan tells us that the closer you are to whole and natural foods, the better.

Drinking water. Here’s what your weight calculation is

good for- take your weight, divide it by 2. That’s roughly how many ounces of water you should be drinking each day. Simple, right? If you’re like me then you’re thinking “HA!” and trying to figure out how coffee fits into that number (sorry people, it doesn’t:). Sugary drinks, electrolyte mixes, teas; anything but plain ole water doesn’t belong in this category either.

Sources vary, but research shows that your body is made up of anywhere from 50-65% water. Without water your cells can’t rehydrate, your muscles can’t heal, your joints can’t move- it’s kind of a big deal!

Sleep. (You knew we were going to go here, didn’t you?)

When’s the last time you got an uninterrupted 8 hours of sleep per night- every night- for a week? Again- “HA!” *Raises hand * “Um, I have kids. How do you really expect that to happen?!”

Eight hours of shut eye might seem daunting- but that’s what your body truly needs. Many of us operate on a whole lot less than that- and there are even instances where people seem to excel on just a few hours of sleep. However, studies show again and again that adults NEED a solid 7-9 hours to function well. (SleepFoundation.org) Also, according to Harvard Medical: “People who sleep eight hours have the lowest BMI.” (1) And “studies show that sleeping less than five hours a night increases the risk of death from all causes by about 15 percent.”(2) The really scary part about sleep deprivation: “staying awake for just 17 to 19 hours straight impacts performance more than a blood-alcohol level of .05 percent…This level of impairment slows an individual’s reaction time by about 50 percent compared to someone who is well rested.” Staying awake for 24 hours is equivalent to a “blood-alcohol level of 0.10 percent.” (3) We talked about this whole need-8-hours-of-sleep, but-I’malso-a-parent thing during our conversation. Morgan said that when her daughter was tiny she would head to bed earlier, knowing that the baby would be up several times in the night, so that she could still get her needed 8 hours even though it was interrupted. Sometimes a mama of a tiny baby will have to fill in her sleep with daytime naps (good luck if you have older kids, though). But really, this whole sleep thing boils down to taking CARE of YOU. It’s hard, I get it- I stayed up till midnight writing this story (irony), but that’s when my house is quiet and I can think.

There’s also days (weeks) where if I didn’t stay up late and do laundry we would run out of clothes. But: what’s more important- laundry, or being healthy and alert for tomorrow?

Movement/Exercise. We know this part, don’t we? You

need to keep active to stay healthy- but the part we forget is that not all activity is created equal. YOUR fitness goals may require a completely different activity level/strategy than your best friend’s. And we all come from different starting places too. It can be hard to know where to start, and which direction to go.

Morgan tells us that overuse of cardio equipment (treadmill, elliptical, etc) isn’t always the best starting place. Especially as women, we’re still dealing with the remnants of stereotypes: thinking the weight section of a gym was the “men’s side” and that girls who hate treadmills are doomed- THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE. In order to shed fat, your body needs to replace it with muscle. You aren’t going to gain much muscle hanging out on the elliptical! Cardio equipment is called that for a reason- it is designed primarily to increase your cardiovascular function, which means raising your heart rate, getting your blood pumping, and increasing the amount of oxygen reaching your muscles.

This goes back to throwing away the scale- but “your goal here is to lose fat, not lose weight.” Hanging out on the cardio equipment is an easy place to start- it’s not very intimidating- but you can’t stay there. Morgan says that cardio will give you some quick results, but after just one or two weeks you’ll already start to plateau and need to start adding resistance training. And lifting weights isn’t going to “make you look like a guy” (Ladies, talking to you because we’ve all heard that one). What lifting weights WILL do is make you lose fat, tone your muscles, and help you reach your “shape” goals.

either. Doing a simple routine of a few reps with a challenging weight- that’s where you’ll actually start to get the results you want.

Foam rolling is the third piece to this exercise equation. What is it? Foam rolling is essentially self massage. Back in the “olden days” of fitness (where men stayed in the weights, and women on the “machines”) we were also told that stretching is an all important warm-up routine- that’s not necessarily true either! Morgan says that stretching before a workout is often disheartening “because your mobility is horrible.” It’s like trying to stretch a cold rubber band. BUT, instead of trying to artificially stretch those cold muscles, using a foam roller will actually help to massage the knots and kinks out of those muscles. Prepping this way means that later, DURING your workout, your muscles will be able to stretch as you need them to.

And finally, REST. (What? I thought we were talking about working out?!) We still are. But just like how your body can’t run on minimal sleep- your body also won’t respond well to constant overuse. To drive home this point Morgan shared the accompanying graph and example with us (see: right).

Every year CBRC has a 100 day fitness challenge, one of the guys involved in the 2016 challenge saw these results. He worked out really hard (daily cardio, weights, or both) for 4 weeks, and lost a significant percentage of body fat- but check out where his real results came in, the week where he did NOTHING. It may seem counter-intuitive, but just like how your body uses sleep time to rejuvenate your cells, your body uses rest time to apply the changes you’ve been working so hard on.

So here’s the bottom line: your body needs food, water, and sleep to function properly. And you need exercise to keep it going. If you’re not giving your body enough fuel (food), how is it supposed to carry you through the day? If you’re not sleeping, how are you going to think clearly? If you’re not drinking enough water, how are your organs supposed to function properly? What would happen if you refused to fill your car up with gas, or take it in for oil changes? We all know the answer to that one- it would break down on the side of the road and refuse to run anymore! So why do we expect any different from our bodies?

And, here’s my “Aha” from writing this piece: fitness professionals, the real and qualified ones, know their stuff. So much info came from my talking with Morgan- and I wish I had the space to share it all. I (re) learned that not all workouts are created equal, you should be catering your workouts to your personal strengths (and weaknesses/ injuries)- and there was significant conversation about how Pinterest workouts aren’t always what they’re cracked up to be. If you want real advice, talk personally to someone with the letters behind their name.

Friends, here’s what I’ve learned: It’s ok to change, for our bodies to change. Some changes are beautiful (like babies). Some changes are really difficult (like coming back from baby). Some changes are going to require a different approach (like when life gets messy or your hormones evolve). They’re all chaptersChapters of YOUR journey.

Refueling your body is a huge part of the equation- but we can’t stop there. You also have to use your body, to keep it moving, and give a chance to rest. Being “in shape” means feeling good in multiple ways: Feeling good as you run around with your kids at the park, not feeling winded as you teach them to run bases or kick goals. Feeling good as you catch a glance of yourself in the mirror- knowing that your hard work has gotten you somewhere and you are stronger and leaner than you used to be. Feeling good as you rest- knowing that your rest is well deserved and helping you be better equipped for tomorrow.

There are two final pieces to making healthy life changes, and they’re very similar: You shouldn’t be doing this alone.

One: get connected to people in the same boat. Find friends, mentors, even an online support group, to help keep you accountable and cheer you on when the going gets tough.

Two: talk to qualified professionals. We kind of picked on doctor office scales earlier in this article, but your doctor can be an excellent ally in your health and fitness journey.

Lots of excitement comes with Fall. Warm pumpkin spice lattes, children getting back to school, the changing of the seasons, cheering for your favorite football team (Who Dat?!). As the weather begins to cool, most of us will begin to participate in more indoor activities. So long, pool time. We’ll see you next year.

Such a big to-do is made over Spring cleaning. I get it. It’s the season of new life. We all want to get out with the old and in with the new. But, Fall! Fall is when “Spring” cleaning is really needed. Spending more time inside, snuggled up next to the fire makes me want to make sure my home is in top notch shape.

The time has come to bring organizing, de-cluttering, and even sorting out your dreaded multi-purpose space to the top of your to-do list. As you nestle in for a cozy Autumn with a clean and orderly home, you’ll be all the more relaxed. Below are a few cost effective and fun ways to not only organize your home’s interior, but set clear boundaries between each of your multi-purpose room’s functions.

But first, what is a multi-purpose space? It can be a bonus room, office/ guest room, playroom/ storage area, a crowded corner of the dining room, or even worse… the kitchen counter. Any space in your home that serves more than one function for your family.

STEP 1: DEFINE THE PURPOSE OF EACH SPACE. PLAN ACCORDINGLY. LAUNDRY ROOM EXAMPLE: Is your laundry room a catch-all? Let’s define its functions as part laundry, part storage.

The laundry section is fairly easy, you have a washer and dryer there. Done. That wasn’t so bad, was it?! For the space in your laundry room that will be used for storage, let’s take a moment to be thankful that it’s college move-in season. Because it is, storage bins can be picked up for five dollars or so at any big box store. Color coordinate or label each box so that everyone in the family knows what goes where. The laundry room is used fairly often, so it is a good idea to store things there that will be used on a regular basis: extra-curricular accessories (baseballs, gym bag, etc.), or even cleaning supplies.

KITCHEN BAR EXAMPLE: Does your kitchen bar hold all of your children’s electronic devices? Add a cute little tray with a multi plug surge protector on it to the counter to keep everything in one spot. Having a designated area will keep you from feeling like your countertop is exploding with wires.

SPARE ROOM EXAMPLE: Is your spare room a catch all but you need it for work and to supervise the kiddos? Spend a Saturday fixing it up (see step two). Remember that scale is important when using one room for two functions. I’m all about big statement pieces in a small room, but if you’re using a loft every day as a play room and a home office, small scale furniture pieces are going to help you not feel so cramped. Similarly, it’s best to opt for a Murphy bed when a guest room has double duty as a craft supply nook.

GUEST ROOM EXAMPLE: Does your guest bed pull double duty as a u-store-it place? Keep the space picture perfect as a guest room by allowing all storage items to remain behind closed doors in the closet. Then, when company arrives, all you have to do is fluff the pillows, open the blinds, and be a fantastic hostess!

STEP 2: CLEAR IT ALL OUT.

It’s hard to re-organize a space when you can’t see the space to begin with. So, haul everything out of there!

Build some time into your schedule for this part. Maybe while the kids are at a Saturday birthday party, or even a Friday night with glass of wine in hand. Whenever you do it, be sure to give yourself a couple of hours.

I guarantee you’ll feel more accomplished if you can tackle this part of the project all at once.

As you empty a room, sort every item into one of three piles or boxes: Keep, Donate, or Toss. (The “donate” pile can always be turned into a “garage sale” box.)

Once everything has been cleared out of the space, spend a little time deep cleaning and sprucing it up. Clean the walls, wash the baseboards and windows, touch up the paint as needed. These little touches go a long way towards making a room feel brand new again. To make the room even more picturesque, install window treatments and needed shelving. Maybe you’ve always wanted a picture “right there.” Now is the time to hang it!

Purchase or re-purpose a few things to bring character and life to your space.

STEP 3: MOVE BACK IN.

Now you get to fill the space again. Haul back in the furniture and accessories from your “keep” pile. Use any storage bins or boxes by labeling or color coordinating them. Remember to refill your room only with items from your “keep” pile!

Now sit down in your beautiful room for a “mommy moment” and admire your handiwork!

STEP 4: SET BOUNDARIES.

There’s a fine line between multipurpose and clutter. The best way to stay on the happy side of life is to separate the functions of your multipurpose space and keep them that way.

There are several methods to accomplish this. The possibilities range from Pinterest perfect to custom and complex.

Here are a few tips for my DIY lovers to try: Have children who share a room? Color coordinate their individual sections of the room, so each has things that are “their” color.

Separate mom’s office from the kids’ play area by strategically placing a rug or two. Or, pick up some painter’s tape in a fun color and affix it directly to the floor. It’s easily removable and super fun to “draw” a line right smack in the middle of a room.

If you work from home, install a bell the kids’ can ring if they need you. It’s a fun way for them to ring a doorbell to your home office. Or, bring them in to the office with you. I keep an old wooden school desk from the 80’s in my office.

It allows my children to have their own space for markers, paper, and other office supplies.

STEP 4: RELAX, ENJOY, AND MAINTAIN!

Get everyone in the family involved. If children know their toys are to stay on the blue rug or between the Seahawks taped lines, you’ll be less likely to find a lone Lego in your filing cabinet (though I still find them there from time to time).

With all the hustle and bustle of after school activities and the holidays quickly approaching, the easiest way to maintain a clutter free and organized interior space is simply to make a habit of it. Before habits are formed, work must be done. The best way to gear up your home for Fall is to tackle one space at a time. Please don’t become overwhelmed by viewing your whole home as one single project. Pick a small spot to begin, and when it’s complete, plan for the next.

Saturday, October 29 -The Haunted Forest at Sacajawea State Park (See October 7 for full details) YMCA presents Trick or Treat on the Trail, 9a-noon, Badger MountainTrailhead Park: 541 Queensgate Dr. Richland, at the base of Badger Mt. Enjoy a familyfriendly hike up Badger Mountain while dressed up in your favorite costumes! Children of all ages can trickor-treat for healthy goodies along the trail at various trick-or-treat stations. After the hike, there will be a Harvest Party which includes games and activities for the whole family to enjoy! This event is FREE! Registration: Starts September 6th, First 200 Kids registered receive a free t-shirt.

-Head Smart - It’s a helmet thing, 1-5p, Three Rivers Convention Center, Kennewick, Free. Presented

by Kadlec Neurological Resource Center (KNRC).

The goal of this event is to educate athletes of all ages and to make it “cool” for them to want to protect their brains. This interactive event for all ages will include Pacific Science Center’s traveling “Brain Power Exhibit”, The world’s most realistic walk through inflatable brain exhibit—The AmeriBrain®, Mini workshops—Helmet 101, Experience How it Feels to Have a Concussion, and more. The highlight of this event will be snowboarder Kevin Pearce’s presentation.

Kevin was a 2010 Vancouver Olympic contender who suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) while training for the Olympic trials in Park City, Utah. He will show a video clip from the HBO documentary – The Crash Reel followed by his story.
