“He was in so much pain; I had to give up work to take care of him.”

Two-year old Mohammed was a healthy, happy boy until he developed a sharp pain in his stomach. His mother rushed him to a local hospital where she was told that her son could not be treated.

Standing in the overcrowded hospital with her poorly son in her arms, a doctor tried to explain to her why they couldn’t help. There was no surgeon available, no anaesthetist, no tools, no time and no capacity.

Quite simply – there was No Room to Operate.

With his condition worsening by the hour, there was thankfully an option – to take Mohammed to the University Hospital Centre of Treichville in Abidjan, a large district hospital in Côte d’Ivoire 200km away with a dedicated paediatric facility. This had been installed by Kids Operating Room.

Mohammed underwent life-saving surgery on the state-of-the-art Operating Table. Without this dedicated Kids Operating Room facility, Mohammed’s story would have been very different – and the outcome would have been devastating for him and his family.

“I’m so grateful for the operation and excellent care Mohammed received,” his mother said. “Like every parent, I just want to see him living a happy, normal life.”

• You’ll hear more about the specific hospital and Operating Table you are twinned with. Video messages from the surgical teams to stories from children and families who have received life-saving care.

• Our Twinning partnership will last for an initial two years. The Kids Operating Room team will be there throughout to engage, update and inform you and your colleagues.

Through your Board Table, you can make sure we’re always there for the next child who needs us. To partner with KidsOR and help more children to thrive:

• Donate £10,000 to twin your Board Table with an Operating Table. This can be done in one donation or over two instalments. You can also encourage your team to fundraise the money over the course of the partnership, which is a great way to connect your team and engage in this important work; we can support you to do this.

• The KidsOR team will do the rest - get your sponsorship pack ready, present to your team to explain the huge difference you are making and, most importantly, get support out to the surgical teams who desperately need it.
