Halfway through the school year already? Gulp, how did that happen?

With school open days in full swing and many families considering their kids’ education options at this time of year, this issue is jam-packed with features, news and expert tips from education thought leaders across Brisbane and Northern Gold Coast.

We were delighted to sit down with Mr Patrick Innes-Hill, the new Principal at Coomera Anglican College, to chat about his new role, the bold ambitions of the College and why Terry Pratchett is the best author ever published. Read that interview on page 16.

The experts in early childhood play at Sanctuary Early Learning and Wearthy combine forces to explore the intricacies of loose parts play (page 21).

We also speak with Principal Merritt at John Paul College to hear his thoughts on

the key years for transitioning kids from school to school—does it really matter when you switch? Find out on page 26.

And, we visit the new Adam and Noah Early Learning College campus under construction in Marsden, which is sure to be a popular addition to the local community there (page 30).

Of course, it’s not all learn learn learn! We also get a little swept away with a love for turtles—baby turtles to be exact—when we were lucky enough to take the kids on a five-day eco-adventure on Heron Island. It is now officially my favourite place in the world for a family getaway.

And of course we have all the regular news, reviews and events to keep your winter as snug as a bug.

DIFFERENTIATED TEACHING: VISIT OUR WEBSITE FOR MORE NEWS: KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU LOCAL NEWS

fundamental to its success.

Last year, the primary school introduced the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), which measures students’ cognitive development across three batteries associated with academic learning: verbal, quantitative, and non-verbal reasoning skills.

According to St Margaret’s Assistant Head of Primary Curriculum Kate Frewin, it is this analysis that allows teachers to dig deeper into each student’s abilities to improve their learning.

At St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Ascot, each student’s learning journey is supported by teachers who identify what success might look like for each individual.

From Pre-Prep to Year 12, teachers use differentiated teaching as a strategy to ensure all students experience challenge, success and improved learning.

In the primary school, the Core Plus Cluster program is a manifestation of this commitment to differentiation and comprises two components—the Core program, taught to students in their

particular year level, and the Cluster program, where students learn within vertical groups based on like abilities and needs. These flexible groupings are clustered in Prep to Year 2, Years 3 and 4, and Years 5 and 6.

While all students have the same learning goal, the teaching process is differentiated according to their unique abilities. Critically, differentiation benefits a wide range of students, from those with learning challenges to those who are considered high ability. Knowing where students sit is

LIL’ PARTY ROCKERS IN THE HOUSE

A new modern dance class for tiny tots has launched in Brisbane, offering a real dance party vibe for preschoolers and their carers.

Created by a qualified and experienced teacher and mum of two, Caron thanks her three-year-old son for the inspiration in building Lil’ Party Rockers.

“Every day is a dance party in our house,” says Caron. “My son loves dancing to all sorts of music from the Wiggles to Calvin Harris.”

After searching for a similar class for her son to join, she realised most dance classes for under five-year-olds were predominantly

ballet based. Her goal was to create a space where children could dance freely and confidently in a less structured environment and to music that even the parents would love. They even take song requests!

In each lesson, children warm up, play dance games and learn basic choreography. And each lesson finishes with a dance party to your little one’s favourite tune, all under the colourful party lights.

“There is a big focus on the use of props and objects, and these classes develop a child’s sense of teamwork and responsibility,” says Caron. “But above all, the children really build their self-confidence as they

“Assessments like CogAT allow us to gain a richer insight into a student’s academic performance by comparing their ability and achievement. Sometimes there is a dichotomy between a student’s ability results, or what they are capable of, and where they are achieving, so teachers can explore factors contributing to why this is the case and then plan to ensure that every student is reaching their full potential,” Kate said.

The data analysis is facilitating a much richer, personalised approach to evidence-based teaching and learning in St Margaret’s primary school, ensuring educators can reach and teach all learners. Lil’ Party Rockers offers weekly classes on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday mornings in Hawthorne and Morningside. The classes are aimed at tiny tots ages 1 - 5 years old. They also offer a mixed-age dance class. lilpartyrockers.com

A BULLSEYE FOR SCHOOL INCURSIONS AND PARTIES

Award-winning kids’ activity provider Lasertag in a Box has recently launched a brand new game in its laser tag arsenal. Called “Bullseye!” it promises to deliver a box-load of fun for all ages.

“Bullseye! is designed for all kids, even for tiny tots,” says Nicole Lander, Chief Fun Officer at Lasertag in a Box. It’s the fun and energetic game you need to get the party started!”

The goal of the new game is simple: tag the central box more than your opposition does, allowing kids to blast away to their heart’s content. This simplicity makes it ideal for a first game, or for younger kids who are trying laser tag for the first time.

Lasertag in a Box has made a name for

itself in the kids’ activity space over recent years, delivering everything you need for a full day of laser tagging—in a box. Bullseye is now one of several games that come preloaded onto the Lasertag in a Box system.

“When people rent our laser tag sets, the games are fully integrated and super easy to run. Batteries come fully charged so that you can play all day.”

The systems can be played in the daytime, nighttime, indoors or outdoors. Being so versatile, they can bring fun to a wide variety of occasions.

“We have vacation care customers that set up a full day of laser skirmish as a holiday incursion, birthday parties that hold small games inside the house, and schools that hire them for a fun activity for school camps,” says Nicole.

Boxes come with everything you need, including taggers and coloured bandanas. You can also add rent extra accessories such as camo netting and bunting to really set the scene.

Meet the Principal

AT COOMERA ANGLICAN COLLEGE

After 27 years of service, Coomera Anglican College's founding Principal, Dr Mark Sly, has passed this prestigious role to a new Principal. We were delighted to sit down with Mr Patrick Innes-Hill to chat about his new role, the bold ambitions of the College and why Terry Pratchett is the best author ever published.

16 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU WINTER 2023 EDUCATION

WHAT TEMPTED YOU TO ACCEPT THE PRINCIPALSHIP AT COOMERA ANGLICAN COLLEGE?

I feel deeply privileged to be taking on the role of Principal of Coomera Anglican College. It is an excellent school with still more potential, and I am incredibly excited to be able to be part of the next chapter in this unique school’s development. I’d known of Coomera Anglican College as a fellow APS (Associated Private School) when I was head of Emmanuel College. Emmanuel played sports against Coomera, and I worked on the APS committee with Dr Sly [founding Principal at Coomera Anglican College]. I’d been impressed by Coomera’s capacity to offer a genuinely holistic education at a very high standard throughout that period—that

successful balance between sports, arts and academics, and personal development and spiritual development. For me, that equilibrium is at the heart of excellent education.

So that was part of it. The other part is that it’s an Anglican school, and I’m Anglican. In southeast Queensland, Anglicanism is an incredibly inclusive expression of the Christian faith. That’s my instinct, my heart and my background.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD SCHOOL GREAT?

When it comes to what makes a difference to a school, schools have to care about the children first as whole people, not just as NAPLAN results or ATAR results, but as whole people.

A happy child will be a better sportsperson, a better musician, a better academic, and most importantly for me, a better future citizen and contributor to society.

I have a vision of a school that strives to nurture young adults who want to and can make a real difference in the world—young adults filled with what one of my educational heroes (Kurt Hahn) lists as: “an enterprising curiosity, an undefeatable spirit, tenacity in pursuit, readiness for sensible self-denial, and above all, compassion”.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE SCHOOL?

I want to build on that tradition of excellence and holistic education simultaneously. It’s a very privileged position because I’ve got the bedrock of an outstanding school here. So I can build on that bedrock.

That will involve looking at our programs to ensure we are offering the best and investing in wellbeing within the school.

We also have some ambitious plans in place. We are just about to start stage two of our master plan, which is the building of a large secondary building that will contain communal spaces, a canteen, and a coffee shop, which will make the parents (and me) very happy! It will include a newly designed library which houses our history and languages departments and a bigger, more flexible library space, each on separate floors. It will contain a new tech study space for esports, film, television and ICT. And then, in the middle, there’ll be a 500-seat theatrecome-lecture theatre, which will become our main hall for house meetings, assemblies and such.

It also contains enough classrooms for us to expand to the size we want—between 1,500 and 1,600.

Due to the location of the new building, there will be a flow-on effect for other facilities at the school that are currently in the way. So we’re building new basketball and netball courts and a new art department.

We aim to have stage two of the master plan completed by around October 2024.

WHAT DOES THE TAGLINE ‘PROUD TRADITION, BOLD AMBITION’ REFER TO?

‘Proud tradition’ refers to Coomera Anglican College being part of the wider Anglican schools network and tapping into the wisdom of the APS group. It is a strong tradition of how you treat people and also how you educate them. And I’m delighted to be part of that.

But also in that, there is security for parents. Coomera Anglican College is a sibling of other Anglican schools, and it means that we, as heads, meet together and share information and ideas, which should

17 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU WINTER 2023
“I have a vision of a school that strives to nurture young adults who want to and can make a real difference in the world.”

bring added confidence. That’s a tradition we are very proud to be part of.

Coomera is one of the fastest-growing suburbs of the Gold Coast. It’s a suburb of young families looking to the future, asking, “What’s coming next?” and asking, “How can we equip our kids for the future?” And that’s our bold ambition: to nurture young people who will go on and be the change-makers and leaders of the future, using the skills they’ve learned here. Hence, a whole area of the new building is dedicated to ICT-related future-focused subjects.

And what is essential to get right is the point where tradition and ambition meet: nurturing the whole child. Yes, our future citizens will need to be ICT savvy, but they’ll also need collaborative, creative and empathetic work skills. Instilling these skills also taps into the ethics of an Anglican school. Anglican schools have always sought to produce excellence in young people and nurture empathetic, collaborative graduates who aim to solve problems of the future. It’s this area of equipping students with the skills they need and the qualities that the future will need.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

Family is really important to me. I have a lovely wife who is a school counsellor at another school. And she was previously a head teacher in Scotland, so she gets what I’m doing. I have two grown-up kids: my oldest works in an ICT department at another school, and my daughter works in

Q uick-fire QUESTIONS

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING? 30 years

WHAT WAS YOUR PREVIOUS ROLE?

Head of Cape Byron Rudolf Steiner School, Principal at Emmanuel and Josiah Colleges on the Gold Coast

WHERE WERE YOU BORN? England

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? Swimming, scuba diving, hiking, mountain biking

the Department of Community Development for the New Zealand government in Wellington. So, we spend a lot of our free time with our kids. And when I’m not with the kids, I either go scuba diving, go into the hills to hike and bird watch or read obsessively.

WHAT DEFINES A COOMERA STUDENT?

I’m going to answer that in two parts. What defines a Coomera student whilst they are still at school is—and I’ve experienced this firsthand when arriving here—they are incredibly warm and genuine young people. They’re an absolute delight to spend time with. There’s a friendliness and acceptance amongst them, which is astonishing and humbling to an old bloke like me. So they’re just really lovely kids, and that’s testimony to the staff and their families and that kind of partnership work that happens within our community.

What defines them when they leave Coomera? The former students that I’ve met (and I’ve met quite a lot) show the same characteristics.

They’re still really warm, friendly people, but they also demonstrate a desire to make a positive difference in the world. And that’s my ambition for our kids—that they leave equipped and also wanting to make the world a better place.

A student with academic skills needs to know how to convert that into something which benefits others. And that’s where holistic teaching comes in.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK? Terry Pratchett’s books are my favourite escape because they’re simultaneously ridiculous and funny. I like detective novels too!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO AT SCHOOL?

I love it when my EA isn’t looking, and I can sneak out the back door and go and kick a football around at break time.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SPORTS TEAM? Aston Villa Football Club in the English Premier League.

CAN YOU TELL US A SECRET ABOUT THE SCHOOL?

I only discovered once I got to the College that it has the most fabulously open, creative, friendly, and dedicated staff I have ever encountered in a school.

They deserve all the credit here; they are just extraordinary people.

Fundamental to anything I do here is making the staff at the school feel valued because they are critical to what we’re trying to achieve here. The dedication and warmth of the staff here are unparalleled.

Several teachers have been here for over 20 years, leading to a remarkable continuity of care for students. That is a massive strength of the school that needs to be more well-known.

PIECING TOGETHER PLAY

Have you ever walked into a room and seen toys scattered everywhere, like a Tupperware cupboard and a recycling bin had a wrestling match? This scenario is what loose parts play looks like. But what appears to be a chaotic mess to adults is actually a playground of endless possibilities for children.

Loose-parts play involves using materials that children can manipulate, construct, rearrange, and take apart to create their own play scenarios. These natural or synthetic materials offer open-ended learning opportunities for children to explore their creativity, concentration, problem-solving skills, social and emotional thinking, and innovative thinking.

While loose parts play can involve elements of risk, it also provides the foundation for physical, social, and intellectual development. Children can experience exploration, invention, and even

survival by taking loose-parts play outside. The Land, a Welsh adventure playground, is an excellent example of loose-parts play. It is a play space designed to empower children to manage risks independently, overseen by qualified playworkers. The Land has been featured in a short documentary by Erin Davis, showcasing how risky play can benefit children's development.

“To an adult eye, it may look chaotic and ugly – to the child, it’s just possibilities.”

21 KIDSONTHECOAST.COM.AU • KIDSINTHECITY.COM.AU WINTER 2023 EARLY LEARNING

overprotecting them does not promote resilience. Without resilience, children become timid teens and fearful adults. Risky play has become a topic of interest in recent years, highlighting its importance in early childhood education. It is essential to embrace risk, face fear, and find a solution to create self-aware, resilient, and courageous children.

“Even when you feel uncomfortable with what’s going on, that’s not what should inform your next move.”

Although it may be challenging to accept some of the scenarios children may create during loose parts play, it is vital to support them. By allowing children to navigate their environment, they learn and grow in ways that aren't possible through stationary equipment. Loose-parts play allows children to take the initiative and find and develop their innate skills.

So, how can we support children during loose parts play? Firstly, anything can become a toy, so use your imagination to

find play opportunities everywhere, especially outside. Secondly, facilitate the play by removing any hazards, but don't join in. Stepping aside allows children to control the play. Lastly, observe and enjoy! Watching children find their independence and take the initiative is incredibly rewarding.

Humans have evolved to feel fear and protect their young to keep our species alive. However, keeping children away from harm does not promote safety. By embracing risk, facing fear, and finding a solution, children can become self-aware, resilient, and courageous. Let's embrace loose-parts play and give our children the foundation for a lifetime of learning and development.

“Children have to learn to manage their own risks. It’s hard, as a parent, to allow your child to do that. But you’ve got to. Children these days go looking for the risks they need.”

Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure has collaborated with Wearthy to establish natural play areas within its facilities while also delivering ongoing education to its staff. Wearthy is a huge advocate of play, providing bespoke play environments that ignite creativity and curiosity in children. You can experience these inspiring natural environments first-hand by visiting Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure centres in Buderim (Sunshine Coast), Ashmore and Maudsland (Gold Coast).

Enrolling IN THE KEY YEARS

So, you’ve made the decision to enrol your child in an independent school. But have you considered whether choosing a specific year for the switch is essential? Mr Craig Merritt, the new principal of John Paul College, says that enrolling your child in a key entry year can provide them with a stronger educational foundation.

Mr Craig Merritt joined John Paul College in January 2023, committed to empowering young people to develop a strong sense of positive character, be optimistic, excel and ultimately be an instrument of positive influence in their communities.

“We are a College that is serious about academic outcomes. Our rich and diverse co-curricular program provides a quality and balanced all-round approach to our educational offering,” says Principal Merritt.

Located 20 minutes south of Brisbane’s CBD, John Paul College (JPC) is one of Queensland’s largest independent Early Learning to Year 12 co-educational schools. The JPC campus features extensive natural bushland and modern facilities with cuttingedge technology programs and wide-ranging cultural and sporting opportunities.

“JPC creates opportunities and pathways for all students to become world ready within our inclusive community. We want

them to be authentic young people who demonstrate responsibility and respect for others, and we want to set them up for future success,” says Principal Merritt.

JPC is a unique College in that, as well as being Early Learning to Year 12, it also has an International College on campus with students from more than 45 different nationalities.

“Our culturally diverse community is a remarkable reflection of the broader Australian population, and I am intensely proud of our harmonious and compassionate JPC family as we respect and nurture our multi-faith community,” says Mr Merritt.

“We know that being prepared for the future—setting goals, choosing a pathway, overcoming obstacles and conquering challenges—gives your child a head start for their life ahead. JPC presents your child with the ultimate preparation for that future, for the pursuit of their future self. We are proud to help prepare our students for their quest to change the world and make a difference.”

KEY ENTRY YEARS

Years 1 to 3: Start with the Right Foundations

Develop your child’s curiosity and love of learning by building solid foundations through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) at JPC, commencing in Prep. Our Primary school focuses on developing students who are motivated by the wonder of learning.

Years 5 to 6: A Smooth Transition to Secondary School

Get a head start for transition into Secondary school. Entry in Year 5 will provide an exciting journey into the world of entrepreneurship, where students enhance their analytical and critical thinking skills and build the foundations for design and innovation which will continue with them throughout their Secondary journey.

Years 7 to 9: Thrive in Secondary School

In Secondary, students study a broad range of subjects, following the Australian curriculum, as they develop subject-specific skills and make links across and between disciplines. We encourage innovative thinking and skills in creativity, design thinking, problem-solving and reflection.

Year 10: A Head Start to Senior Studies

Students start exploring the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) program in Year 10. This means they can gain an advantage in their senior studies while also getting access to career guidance and the opportunity to personalise their subject choices to suit them.

Scholarships are available for Years 5 and beyond.

Queensland Ballet Academy winter school holiday program for juniors

Junior dancers in southeast Queensland can take centre stage this winter with Queensland Ballet Academy’s Junior Winter School exclusively for younger dancers aged 7-9 years.

Across this 3-day program, children will enjoy foundational training in classical ballet, character dance, repertoire and contemporary dance classes under the guidance of Queensland Ballet Academy’s world-class faculty.

Queensland Ballet Academy Director Christian Tàtchev says it’s exciting to identify potential at an early age because the Academy offers a training pathway to prepare students for a professional career.

“Our Academy faculty offers outstanding training and guides young dancers with a focus on safe dance practice and wellbeing,” he says.

Prior dance or ballet experience is beneficial but optional. The Academy welcomes young dancers with a fledgling curiosity to an avid interest in dance. Further training opportunities will be available to select participants following the winter workshop.

Queensland Ballet Academy was

established to align with Queensland Ballet’s vision to nurture and support world-class ballet and dance training in Queensland and Australia. The state-of-the art training facilities in Kelvin Grove were opened in 2020 and the Academy now offers a range of training programs for young dancers. STATE-OF-THE-ART

Early Learning College to launch in Marsden

Australian Early Learning Colleges by Adam and Noah are set to launch a new state-of-the-art centre in Marsden this winter.

Adam and Noah Early Learning College has been operating in Heritage Park since 2014, providing children with a head start in life through an innovative approach to early learning and education.

Now, this forward-thinking education provider is set to open a new centre in Marsden. This new service will follow Australian Early Learning College’s advanced curriculum that covers language, maths, science, safety, health, social skills, engineering, drama, acting, music, sports, and much more.

The students that attend the new campus will also benefit from weekly excursions to the Adam and Noah Centre in Heritage Park,

where they will have access to the vast outdoor playground, aptly named ‘Outdoor Adventureland’.

This impressive playground includes an Ancient and Archeological World with pyramids, dinosaurs, fossil digging, two sports areas, an animal and vegetable farm, and a shaded picnic area.

The Heritage Park campus also includes an indoor play area called ‘The Fun Spaceship’, which consists of an indoor playground and soft play equipment.

THE ADAM AND NOAH STORY

When Georgiana Karam was looking for a long daycare and early learning centre for her children, she wanted more options that

provided the love, care and educational needs she wanted. With no facility meeting her high expectations, she created her own.

“I wanted an early learning service that cared for the children within but also focused on developing an exceeding educational program,” Georgiana says.

Georgiana built a state-of-the-art building and outdoor adventure area to complete her vision. Named after her two sons, Adam and Noah Early Learning College opened nine years ago with a mission to provide a strong academic foundation for every student.

“We wanted to go above and beyond, delivering unlimited early years learning opportunities with a focus on learning through play,” Karam says.

Heron Island

A TURTLE-Y AWESOME ECO-ADVENTURE

Located just off the coast of Gladstone, the coral cay of Heron Island offers a unique island experience that’s perfect for kids and adults.

Are you looking for a family holiday guaranteed to be turtle-y awesome? With no need for flights, incredible snorkelling, and hundreds of baby turtles, Heron Island is the perfect island escape for kids of all ages.

WHAT IS HERON ISLAND?

Heron Island is a coral cay, a low island formed entirely from the reef on which it stands—the Great Barrier Reef—the world’s largest and most diverse coral reef system. It is not a continuous barrier but a broken maze of coral reefs spread along

2,300 kilometres of Queensland’s East Coast. It includes about 2,900 individual reefs, 300 coral cays, and 600 continental islands. Heron Island is near the southern end of this immense natural structure and is the most frequented cay in the Capricornia Cays National Park, with 30,000 visitors annually for recreation and research. Heron Island is also home to the most prominent and longest-established coral reef research facility on the Great Barrier Reef. With 12 resident staff and a capacity of 80 visitors, research groups are regularly working on the island and the surrounding reef.

GETTING TO HERON

Boat transfers to Heron Island depart from Gladstone Marina, a five-hour drive from the Sunshine Coast. As the ferry leaves at 9.30 am, we broke that drive up with a night at Agnes Waters, which provided the perfect stop-off.

When you arrive at the Marina, check in your luggage at the desk, and they will deliver it straight to your room. Keep a day bag with everything you need for the crossing and the first few hours on the island—swimmers, sunscreen, toys, drinks—as you won’t get your bags and room until about 3 pm.

The two-hour crossing to Heron Island is smooth aboard the Heron Islander catamaran. They show a kid’s movie or a nature documentary on the screens during the trip, so there is something to keep little ones occupied.

WHAT TO PACK

We had only two clothing needs: swimmers and several shorts/t-shirt combos. We were either in the water, walking on the beach, playing games in the bar or eating in the restaurant. We didn’t need runners; we were either barefoot or in thongs. However, if your little one has sensitive feet, it could be worth packing an old pair of sandals or runners to use as reef shoes. During the turtle season, you can spend a lot of time walking the beach looking for hatchlings, and, as it is crushed coral, the sand can be pretty coarse.

Snorkel, mask and flippers are included in your stay, which you pick up when you arrive. They also have flotation vests and noodles for kids and unconfident swimmers. And they provide beach towels, so there’s no need to pack them either!

FOOD AND DRINK

You can’t take food onto the island, but don’t worry, the whole family will be well-fed! Your stay includes a daily buffet breakfast, which is an impressive spread. There you can fill up on hot items such as bacon, eggs and sausages, as well as pancakes, cereal, bread, pastries and fruit.

Sandwiches are available in the bar for lunch, or the restaurant offers a sit-down lunch menu. There is also a small shop with snacks, drinks and souvenirs. And then the restaurant is open for dinner.

Dinner is also buffet style, with a wide range of dishes, salads and sides. Even our fussy eaters could always find something to enjoy. You need to book your dinner time each evening so the restaurant has a steady flow of guests.

TURTLES, TURTLES, EVERYWHERE!

One of the main reasons visitors travel to Heron Island is to experience the turtle nesting season.

Female turtles clamber into the dunes from November to March to lay their eggs. Two months later, sometime between dusk and dawn, that nest will erupt with 100-150 baby turtles. Walk along the beach at dusk, and you are likely to see some. But it helps to take the guided turtle walk with a naturalist, as they know which nests will likely hatch. Watch where you step!

TIP: While this is an awe-inspiring sight, it’s important to note that it can also be a bit confronting for little ones as sharks and seagulls prey on the baby turtles as they run for the water’s edge.

SNORKELLING THE REEF

The snorkelling on Heron Island is some of the best you can experience across the whole of the Great Barrier Reef. But the primary reason it is so incredible for kids is that it is straight off the beach—it’s shallow, and it’s reeeeeeally easy to access. There’s no need to get on a boat out into the open ocean; you can walk straight out of your room onto the beach and into the reef. Even brand-new snorkellers will be happily exploring in a matter of minutes. For the more confident swimmers, there is a shipwreck to explore. The wreck is the best place to see larger marine species, such as rays, sharks, and turtles. However, we saw turtles in the shallow reef just outside the resort. And for those wanting to explore the deeper waters, a snorkel boat can take you to the outer edge of the reef.

DON’T FORGET THE BIRDS!

As well as being a turtle haven, Heron Island is a registered bird sanctuary. And there are birds everywhere! The island belongs to the birds first, so they sit on the paths, nest wherever they choose, and come into your room. They are tame and beautiful, and it’s a genuine honour to live amongst them for a few days. Each season sees different birds on the island; visit the Heron Island website for what species are migrating through during your stay. TIP: wear a hat, and don’t look up with your mouth open under the trees !

THINGS TO DO ON HERON ISLAND

As well as the incredible snorkelling, there are plenty of things to do on Heron Island with kids. Eco activities include guided bird walks, island walks and reef walks. There are also several animal talks throughout the week. A Junior Rangers club operates during the school holidays, which whisks kids away on an eco-adventure for an hour and a half.

Another must-do is the fascinating behindthe-scenes tour of the research station. We certainly came home with budding marine biologists following that tour!

The I-Spy boat is another wonderful experience for families. This semisubmersible boat takes you to the edge of the reef, where you can see the reef and all the sea creatures below the water—an aspect that most kids (and less confident grown-ups) would never see.

There is no mobile coverage or wi-fi on Heron Island, so pack a book and travel games. There is giant chess, two pool tables and several board games in the bar area. And a lovely swimming pool.

There is certainly plenty to fill at five-day stay. And we can’t wait to go back!

3. Preheat air fryer to 1800C. Divide half of the mixture among nine patty cases. Remove rack from the air fryer and carefully transfer cases onto rack. Return rack to fryer. Cook for 8-10 minutes or until the muffins are cooked through.

4. Transfer to a wire rack. Repeat with remaining mixture to make 18 muffins.

5. Brush tops of the muffins with maple syrup while still warm.

6. Serve with extra maple syrup, if you like.

You can store the muffins in an airtight container for up to three days. You can also store them in the freezer.
