eing a working mum, I’m very grateful that traditional family gender roles have blurred since I was a kid. Not only because I’m a terrible cook (and I loathe cleaning), but simply because doing everything in the household whilst also holding down a full-time job is totally impossible. The traditional nuclear family has also blurred for the better, with samesex parents, single parent families and blended families all with kids and thriving. This positive shift also means that partners are more involved in our kids’ lives nowadays. From changing nappies to sharing the load of Mount Washmore, modern dads are firmly in the parenting trenches… and we love it! So, this issue is a celebration of

the dads, of the partners, and of the diversity that modern-day parenting allows. We explore the positive benefits that male input and diverse role modelling has on a child’s early literacy skills. We chat with a Year 1 teacher Mr G to find out about the shifting role of the early learning educator, and we meet the dads making positive change in the community. And, as always, we have the latest news, reviews, events and activities for kids and their grown ups. Happy Autumn!

A BRICK-TASTIC NEW VENUE IN MAROOCHYDORE

We chat with Gavin Hodgkins from Bricks 4 Kidz Sunshine Coast about the new LEGO® Creativity Centre, and find out why this is tipped to be one of the Coast’s favourite party and play venues. CONGRATUL ATIONS ON OPENING THE LEGO CREATIVIT Y CENTRE! WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO TAKE THE LEAP AND OPEN A BRICKS AND MORTAR SPACE (‘SCUSE THE PUN!)?

I've been running Sunshine Coast Bricks 4 Kidz for seven years now—doing mobile parties, pop-up school holiday camps and school incursions. And it's always been somewhat of an ‘on-the-side’ venture for me. But as things got busier and busier, it became apparent we really needed a permanent centre to operate from. So, I took the leap and opened a dedicated Bricks 4 Kidz Creativity Centre.

18

A U T U M N 2022

The new centre means we have a fun, colourful space to hold heaps of regular activities. Parents can have confidence that our school holiday workshops are always on and are held in the same place. Plus, all the LEGO is in one spot now, rather than scattered across every corner of my house!

WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE AVAIL ABLE AT THE SUNSHINE COAST LEGO CREATIVIT Y CENTRE?

Now we have a permanent space, we can host a variety of regular school holiday workshops. We run creative workshops where we might focus on character building and how to build with Technic LEGO. We do a junior robotics program as well using Technic LEGO, in which we build then attach it to a laptop and they then program the motor to do different things, adding in backgrounds and sounds. It’s a really fun introduction to coding and robotics. And we also do the advanced robotics workshops, which are more of an introduction to real-world technology, where they are building battle bots and using touch sensors. During term-time, we now have a homeschool program too, where we might do a robotics session one day and then a Technic session another day. We aim to align these sessions with the central subjects required for home schooling. We do after school programs too. We'll run a central theme and make the builds a little harder each week for them. And, we still do our school incursions, where we bring the bricks to you for a fun session of LEGObased STEM activities.

AND YOU DO BIRTHDAY PARTIES TOO?

Yes! Doing the mobile LEGO parties, I’ve seen the challenges of trying to hold a party in a home. The chaos and the mess just isn’t something that parents want to deal with! So I wanted to offer a simple, really fun LEGO-themed party that could be tailored for any age and interests; where parents don’t have to worry, the kids have a great time… and it’s all very simple. The main thing that we’re trying to do with the parties is make it a personal experience for the kids. So, when people book a birthday party at the Bricks 4 Kidz Creativity Centre, they get the entire centre just for them. And we have a range of different activities and themes that we can run, each fully tailored to the child and the group. bricks4kidz.com.au/qld-sunshine-coast K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . child every day, try to arrange a regular time twice a week that is the special reading night with Daddy. If you work away, put aside time to read over video call.

3. Children respond

to your enthusiasm! So, read something that you are enthusiastic about. If you prefer non-fiction, choose books about famous people, how things work, animals or sport. If you need some ideas, head into your local library.

4. If Dad isn’t around, is

there a male in your child’s life that can take the role of reading champion? Grandparents, uncles, family friends. It takes a village to raise a child so involve the men in your life. K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

5. Tell stories about when

you were young. Kids love to hear about their parents as a child, and they are easy to recount.

6. Get your child

involved when you are doing household projects. Describe what you are doing, let them help write shopping lists, label items in the garage, or assemble furniture.

7. When you are driving, read out billboards and signs that you see. And Read the menu together whenever you go out to eat.

8. Involve your child in everyday writing tasks, such as shopping lists, labelling things, writing thank you notes.

9. If you play a board

game with your child, pretend you’ve forgotten the rules and then read them with your child.

10. Make up your own

stories. Kids love dads being silly, and this is the perfect opportunity to use those silly voices and get into a story with your child as the main character. A U T U M N 2022

EARLY LITERACY RESOURCES AT THE LIBRARY

tips

READING FOR EVERY AGE

BABIES Even young babies can learn from reading books with you. Read slowly and spend time on each page, giving your baby time to focus on the shape of words and the pictures. Turn the page slowly—this shows Bub how to use a book. Point out and name familiar and new things your baby sees; the more words babies hear, the more words they learn. Change the tone of your voice as you read. This makes it easier for your baby to pick up on different speech sounds, which is an important step towards your baby learning to make sounds. Look for books with different textures so your baby can hear, see and feel the book. Waterproof plastic and cloth books that can go in your baby’s mouth and into the bath are fantastic. Choose books with bright colours or simple high-contrast pictures, as these are interesting and easy for babies to focus on. Babies enjoy books that have rhymes, rhythm and repetition.

22

A U T U M N 2022

TODDLERS At this age, reading with your child is all spending time together and about having fun with books, so it’s time get silly! Help your child choose a book, and have them hold the book and turn the pages. Get your child to fill in the words in a story they know. Try pausing, they might well finish the whole sentence for you! Ask your toddler to describe actions in the book. For example, ‘What is the cow doing?’ or ‘What sound is the dog making?’. Choose books with animals and animal noises, books about playtime that relate to their own experiences, and books about a favourite topic such as cars, castles, the ocean. Also, lift-the-flap and pop-up books are wonderful at this age, where toddlers can have fun with books with moveable pieces. Books that you can read in 4-5 minutes are a good length for this age. PRESCHOOLERS Reading at this age is all about exploring stories and spending special time together, so it’s the perfect age to chat and ask questions. Before you even start reading, ask your child questions, such as ‘Who is the author?’ ‘What do you think the story is about?’ ‘Who might be in it?’ Encourage your child to use their finger to trace the words while you read them. Changing your voice and expression for different characters can also be fun. Repeat repetitive phrases and words together. Vary the pace of reading and stop to ask questions during the story. For example: ‘What do you think happens next?’ Also ask them questions that will help them relate to the story, such as, ‘How would you feel if this was you?’ or, ‘What would you do if this happened to you?’ Preschoolers enjoy books that tell simple stories, especially ones with rhythm and repetition, and books about families, friends and going to school. They also enjoy books with characters who are about the same age as them, and characters who have quirky traits. Some preschoolers are very interested in non-fiction books, such as inventions, food, planets and animals.

PROFILE

to rely on data to help inform my decision making. Utilising existing SCGS data, I am keen to explore and develop emerging opportunities within the existing highquality offerings here at the School. I will also seek investigate other opportunities into the future. My style has been described as energetic, curious and collaborative but when I reflect on your question, I would say my style is also analytical.

WHAT MOST EXCITES YOU ABOUT JOINING THE SCHOOL?

M EET T HE P R IN C IPA L Sunshine Coast Grammar welcomed a new School Principal at the start of 2022. We sat down with Principal Owen to get to know more! WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I have recently moved here from the ACT where I was Principal at Canberra Girls Grammar School. However, I definitely consider myself a Queenslander. I was born and bred in Western Queensland. Apart from Canberra Girls Grammar, all of my previous schools have been in Queensland and include Somerset College, Ipswich Girls Grammar School, Moreton Bay College and Brisbane Girls Grammar School. I have a son who is a 4th year Commerce/Law Student at the University of Queensland and my daughter has just finished Year 12 and has now commenced Engineering/Science at the University of Sydney.

WHAT DREW YOU TO SCGS? I have spent many of my professional years hearing stories about Sunshine Coast Grammar School, and most overwhelmingly

hearing about the wonderful community and culture of the School. The unique rainforest location on the Sunshine Coast, its significant history and link with the excellence provided and shared amongst the PMSA schools, including Somerville House and BCC. Finally, and this has been confirmed in my many conversations with the staff, parents and students, I was drawn to SCGS as it is poised, indeed is already moving with great momentum into the next phase in its growth. The next decade in SCGS’s history will see great growth, and the school will take its place in the Australia wide education market. It’s a very exciting time to be here.

WHAT WILL YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE BE AT SCGS? I am very strategic in my approach and by nature of my own academic pathway, I tend

Everything. I am excited about being back in Queensland. I am excited to start at a new school and despite the delayed start of the school year I am most excited about meeting the students, staff and community of Sunshine Coast Grammar. Noting the delayed start for students to the school year (school campuses are meant to be full of students, full of ideas, learning, sport and fun), welcoming back students, brimming with energy, noise and laughter has been brilliant.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO ON THE WEEKEND? Catching up with my family. I enjoy riding, swimming, running and reading.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT MOST PEOPLE , DON T KNOW... I love Chemistry and Physics. I love numbers, statistics, analysis and quadratic equations. This is a bit embarrassing, but most of my teachers and my friends from my own schooling years cannot believe I am a teacher and a principal. Apparently, and I am not sure I agree, I was a little rebellious at school.

WHAT IS YOUR SUPERPOWER? Growing up in rural Queensland, I have several skills that country children develop through working on properties, but the one skill that seems to be admired most is my ridiculously loud whistle.

COMMUNICATING IN A WHAT IS SEEN AS THE TYPICAL AUSSIE FAMILY HAS SIGNIFICANTLY SHIFTED OVER THE GENERATIONS. WITH GENDER NORMS MORE FLUID, PARENTING NOW FALLS ON A SPECTRUM OF ROLES.

modern family

D

uring previous generations, the viewpoint of traditional families was described as Mum at home in a nurturing, gatekeeper role. It was Mum keeping the wheels turning at home; she was the nurse, cook, tutor, cleaner and about a million other jobs to boot! Dads back then were viewed as the breadwinners, the disciplinarian, the weekend outdoorsman, and the tutor (usually to sons). And while the buck tended to stop with Dad, it had to get past Mum to get Dad first. Now, we know that these roles have morphed over the years. We can see the changes in which Mum and Dad both have careers. There are single-parent families and LGBTQI families. Can it hurt to ask the question: ‘Does my gender identity impact how I parent? Are there still some roles that seem to be defined by this in my family?’ A scenario to try: Take some time; sit down, and think where your family fits on this spectrum of roles. What does it mean to be you in your home? What kind of parent are you? Is this affected? If both parents work, does it feel even? It might be clear that your family is a pretty up to date 2022 family. But what about the more subtle things? How does communication and supporting your children feel in your family? Does this feel equal?

We want to balance our communication able to be the parent that says no, provides between teaching, protecting and boundaries, protect their children in a way emotionally nurturing our children. that emotionally connects and is kind. The importance of positive male educators in early education.

he early childhood education sector has traditionally been seen as a female role. However, more men are now seeing it as a worthwhile career—and with great benefits for the kids. We chat to Mr Matt Griffiths (aka Mr G), Year 1 teacher at Mooloolaba State School to find out more.

I really love psychology and how the mind works, I ‘rolled the dice’ and completed the two-year Postgraduate teaching degree. I am so happy that I made that choice.

WHAT LED YOU TO CHOOSING A CAREER IN EARLY EDUCATION?

The obvious answer is that males are really under-represented in the teaching profession and especially in early education. Some students can go through the whole of primary school and not experience a male teacher. I think it is important that students have experiences with males and females throughout their schooling. Young boys who are disengaged or aren’t interested in reading

I had just finished my psychology degree at QUT on the Northside of Brisbane and was tossing up the 2-year internship. I had two good mates in my football team who were a couple of years into their teaching career. They were always sharing the wonderful achievements of their students. WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S IMPORTANT FOR SCHOOLS TO HAVE MORE MALE TEACHERS IN EARLY EDUCATION?

might really benefit from having a male teacher in the early year levels modelling some positive reading behaviours.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT TEACHING YEAR 1? I really enjoy the enthusiasm from all the students. In Year 1, I get to see this amazing growth from every student. I love teaching them to read and I enjoy all the science behind it. The reading programme here at Mooloolaba State School is the best I have seen or heard about. Another really enjoyable part of Year 1 is talking and communicating with the parents and caregivers. It is a Year level where I am able to catch up with them and share their child’s experiences regularly. A U T U M N 2022

Mr Peter Wilson DO YOU SEE ANY DIFFERENCE IN TEACHING STYLES BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE TEACHERS? I don’t believe the differences in teaching style is gender based. We are fortunate at Mooloolaba State School to have great male and great female teachers. What is important is that they develop positive relationships with their students so they can support and challenge them in their learning.

WHAT DO YOU THINK COULD BE DONE TO ENCOURAGE MORE MEN INTO EARLY EDUCATION?

school, that is a problem for me. I need to adjust something to ensure they jump out of bed excited about the possibilities of their school day. I love inventing games relating to Mathematics and English concepts.

I think many young men might still have the thinking that teaching is a ‘female occupation’. I am not sure how many young boys in Year 10/11/12 have the hopes of being a teacher. I entered my teacher WHAT DO YOU THINK education as a mature aged student at 23. WHY DO YOU THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO HAVE MORE MALE TEACHERS IN EARLY AND PRIMARY EDUCATION? I think it is good to have a balance of male and female teachers in primary education so that our children are supported by positive role models.

WHAT DO YOU THINK COULD BE DONE TO ENCOURAGE MORE MEN INTO EARLY EDUCATION? I would love education and the role of teachers to be more valued generally in our society. My perception is that the role of teachers has been more valued in our community over the past few years, partly due to the impact of many of our students having to some of their learning from home. The more we all speak positively about education and the benefits for our children and their teachers the more people will choose a career as a teacher.

DO YOU NEED ANY MUSICAL SKILLS TO ATTEND? “Absolutely not. No music skills required! I firmly believe that anyone, when given the opportunity, can ignite their innate creativity and use that creativity to improve and enhance their overall health and wellbeing. Access to music and the creative arts is a basic human right. And we all find our own ways to express ourselves with music.” “I do find that a lot of young people want to learn an instrument so we work together on how instrument learning, beat making or or even music performance can help them achieve their goals.” “I also support young people who are already quite accomplished on an instrument, but want to use that relationship to go deeper and to explore more emotional regulation and emotional expression goals.”

WHY size MATTERS in an early years setting

If there are too many young children in a room, they can become unsettled and anxious.

A

s young children separate from family for the first time, it can bring about some anxiety and upset during the initial settling in period. This is expected, but what could we do in our childcare environment to assist and reduce children’s anxiety? Three areas we can work on are: • class numbers • room size • play space size. If there are too many young children in a room, they can become unsettled and anxious. At this stage of development, young children are not used to being part of a large group of similar aged children. If too many people are physically close to them for extended periods of time, children find it more challenging to regulate their feelings. We know it is important for educators to develop meaningful relationships with young children, interactions need to be

warm, caring, unhurried and responsive. This is hampered when too many children are in the class. At Out & About Care & Education we purposefully keep class sizes to a sensible and age-appropriate number so our children can learn to navigate the space and learning environment without additional ‘crowd related’ and ‘reduced adult’ connection stress. Room size and outdoor play space size also impact on children’s ability to learn well. If rooms are minimal size, younger children find it very difficult and stressful to manage their day. They bump into other children accidentally as they navigate the room, become upset at feeling crowded and agitation levels rise accordingly,

eventually causing unnecessary tears and upset. To prevent this, we ensure our rooms are much larger than required and our lovely outdoor play spaces are also green, very generously sized spaces with a fabulously relaxing water view. Children can be relaxed and open to learning in our environments without worrying about the proximity of others. As children settle into the new environment and relax more, they make friends and establish wonderful relationships with their peers and our teachers. In considering the spaces we provide and how they are designed, we are planning for the best outcomes for young children across all areas. So, as you can see, size does matter.

THE NUTS AND BOLTS

OF CHILDREN'S HEALTH

As parents and carers, our key goal is to give our kids what they need to grow, develop, build a strong immune system and be happy, right? Being at the root of where the immune system, moods, and development flourish, gut health is central. Here are the three tools to have in your gut health toolkit.

NOURISH

• A whole food diet, with lots of diversity makes for happy and healthy gut microbes, happy guts and ultimately happy kids. • Make plant foods the hero of the meal. • Include bone broth in the diet. • Include foods with probiotics like yoghurt and kombucha. PRO TIPS

Include bone broth in soups, cook rice in it, add to pasta, mashed potatoes and sauces. A dd protein to all meals. e.g. Having crackers - add hummus or nut butters. If you have a super picky eater, keep encouraging them to explore, but in the meantime you can always supplement by secretly adding in a superfood powder (like Nutra Organics) into pancakes, smoothies or icy poles. A lways have stewed apple-berry coulis on hand to add into unflavoured yoghurt.

DEFEND

• Get dirty: Kids need to play in the dirt and get exposed to a whole heap of different bugs to help strengthen their microbiome, therefore strengthen the immune system. So go easy on the hand sanitiser and let them play with the pet and make those mud cakes. • Sunshine: There is a strong link between Vitamin D (from sunshine) and gut dysbiosis. Studies have shown that sunlight exposure helps the cells that fight off infection (T-cells) to get to an infection and sort it out faster. So if your kids have the sniffles or around those that do, sending them out for some sunshine daily is a great idea.

PROTECT

• Reduce chemical laden products in the house: laundry powder, cleaners, skin products - all which can have a detrimental impact on our gut microbes. Although we cannot 100% get away from this, we can reduce the toxic load. • Go easy on the medications: although sometimes they are essential, often they are over prescribed. If prescribed antibiotics, always take a probiotic afterwards.

PRO TIPS

Keep a bottle of probiotics in the fridge, you can buy powders for the littlies. Hide it in smoothies, yoghurt or milk, just remember not to add it to anything hot otherwise you will kill the bacteria.

PRO TIPS

W hen the kids are sick and the sun is shining, get them outside for a picnic or time laying on a rug reading books. If they need encouragement, pillows and blankets on the trampoline work a treat.

A t home try naturally sweet desserts like apple crumble, yoghurt with berries, homemade banana frozen ice cream. For rewards, instead of sugary treats, how about stickers, small toys, or special choices of what to have for dinner instead?

Instead of constantly hand sanitising, switch to hand washing with soap.

e f i l b Gra Providing a much-needed environment for dads to chat and connect with other dads, the grassroots movement Grab Life by the Balls is steadily growing across the Coast. We chat to founder Sam Parker about barbecues, mateship, and men’s mental health. WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO START THE MEET-UP GROUP ‘GRAB LIFE BY THE BALLS’? It was accidental. There was a night in November 2017 when my mates and I were all free, so we had a burger night. It was an enjoyable break from life’s hardships, so I began organising official events and invited everyone to come along. From there I recognised the need and purpose of Grab Life by the Balls and mateship. WHY DO YOU THINK THERE IS SUCH A NEED FOR THESE MEET-UPS FOR DADS? There’s a need because men seem to be reluctant to start conversations surrounding mental health. There’s a stigma about men having mental pressure—that we don’t ask for help. From a dad’s point of view, it feels like the current system doesn’t speak to Aussie men. We have found that creating a space for men to hang out with other blokes,

42

A U T U M N 2022

have a laugh and create meaningful connections, has a lot of positive benefits. Men always have something going on in their lives. We might not always talk about it, but it’s important to acknowledge that fact. Mateship is a really good tool for positive mental health, and it’s easy and fun. WHAT FEEDBACK HAVE YOU HAD FROM DADS FOLLOWING THE MEET-UPS? Guys really appreciate the laid back environment and the “vibe”, if you like.

I’ve found that a lot of times, the guys had hardships happening in their lives and coming to these events actually helped them through those rough times. It’s not always about talking—sometimes, it’s just about hanging out with other blokes going through similar stuff. HOW WAS YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE OF BECOMING A DAD? It was bloody hard! There’s added pressure and expectation that comes with becoming a dad. You recognise where you should be, both in life and in terms of your mental health, and where you actually are, and for me those things just weren’t aligned.

A dad’s role today is so much more than a game of footy on the weekend. Lukas Ritson from Wearthy writes about stereotypes, nature play and the modern dad.

ender roles in a child’s nuclear family have significantly blurred over the last two decades. Today we have blended families, single parent families, same sex parents, non-binary parents. And with this, the ‘traditional’ role of dads has also (thankfully) shifted too. Though this blurring of lines has started, Lukas Ritson from nature play experts Wearthy believes that there is still further room for growth. “I think we need to move away from the stereotype that being a dad means rough and tumble play,” says Lukas. “While this can be developmental and fun for kids, the modern dad can offer so much more in terms of confidence and identity.”

44

A U T U M N 2022

THE MODERN DAD With the parenting load now more equally distributed, and the responsibility of raising the children no longer solely the mother’s domain, modern dads are far more available for their children and are more aware of the importance of their relationship and influence. “Presence is a powerful tool for dads,” says Lukas. “Like Joe Brumm said in his talk at Childhood Summit 2021: ‘childhood isn’t all about the milestones or the big events… it’s those small interactions we have with our children every day that matter that most’.” For our kids, these small yet critical everyday interactions are usually centred around play and sharing jobs around the house.

“Often men operate in the doing/fix it mindset, whilst mums tend to work on experience-based and more social play, rather than being outcome focused,” Lukas explains. “So, for Dads, it’s important to remind themselves to enjoy the process with their child, not the end result. I know for me, when I’m playing with my son Julian, we could be at my work bench and I will consciously need to put my own perfectionism aside—nails don’t need to be straight, cuts don’t need to be perfect.” NATURE PL AY Play is a pillar of learning for children. with themselves, the world and the people around them—and that’s where nature comes in. “Connection with nature creates the arena to think outside ourselves,” says Lukas. “Being supported by the environment increases the level of respect and value to the individual self." Every parent has had the experience of giving a child something for them to only toss it aside and focus on the box. Why? It’s the same theory when it comes to a humble stick and all the joys that nature provides. That box, or that stick, offers endless possibilities. "Nature activates children’s physiology, enhances physical health and creates selfesteem. Compared to anything on a screen, it gives children unlimited possibilities— possibilities to engage with elements that can be used in different ways." With opportunities for an array of

LOCAL LIFE

ABILITY is everywhere Able Cause is on a mission to neutralise the stigma around disability, and we couldn’t be more on board. By Angela Sutherland

I

t’s a hot summer’s day and I’m in the car in the Plaza carpark, primed to do another phone interview. I do a lot of these—many in the car, some at swimming lessons, some I even get to do at a real desk. Little did I know that this one would prove to be so one of those ‘seismic shift’ chats. My interviewee (also, ironically, hiding out in a different car park!) was Sam Hall—dad of Oliver (aged 5), and twins Eleanor and Ava (aged 2).

46

A U T U M N 2022

The twins suffered from twin to twin transfusion syndrome in the womb—a condition where one twin donates and the other receives fluids. As a result, Eleanor was born prematurely with a brain bleed, which led to cerebral palsy, epilepsy and severe vision impairment. In the first few years of Eleanor’s life, with the daily challenges she faced and the many hurdles she overcame, the family were constantly reminded that she is far more than a disability diagnosis.

“She is able of growth, able of change, able to inspire… she is simply, able, in her own unique ways!” Sam says.

“She is able of growth, able of change, able to inspire… she is simply, able, in her own unique ways!” Sam says. And as the passion for her unique ability grew, the ideas did too. “12 months ago, we wanted to raise awareness for Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day. Yet, we couldn’t find anything that we’d be proud to wear. We started doing t-shirts and through that process, I realised we had the opportunity to spread a greater message that could connect with other families like ours.” And so Able Cause was born. Its mission? to neutralise the stigma surrounding disability. “Able Cause recognises that ability is not limited by mental or physical capacity. We are all uniquely different, yet we are all the same. We are all born into this world with the right to be seen, valued, respected and loved for who we are,” Sam says. “Our mission is to empower all people with the belief that they are capable of more than they realise. The #ablemovement exists K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

to celebrate strength of character, human spirit and individuality and to neutralise the stigma surrounding disability. “We are all able, whether you have a disability or not, we all have something to be proud of. It could be something huge or it could just be the smallest thing. But it all matters equally.”

WE ARE ALL ABLE

Sharing that message hasn’t come easily, and the 12 months since this started has been filled with challenges. “I think the biggest one that a lot of businesses would relate to at the moment, is the pandemic and the endless disruption. In terms of operating Able Cause, I also have a full-time job, so this is purely a passion project for me,” says Sam. “I've got my heart and soul invested in Able Cause, but there are many challenges for me with time and capacity. It’s crazy trying to wear all the hats, but we just continue with all the ideas and acting on them as they come.” And with little Eleanor as a constant source of inspiration, that passion never abates. “I think if Eleanor can achieve more than what was predicted for her and she’s kicking so many goals ... then so can we,” Sam says. “This message is for all the other Eleanors out there, and there are so many.” Raising awareness is a large part of Able Cause’s work. “At the time, when you are first experiencing something like this, it feels really isolating, But you do soon learn that there is a great community out there of likeminded people who have their own stories K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

that might be similar to yours, who can connect on that level. And that was where we wanted to meld the two worlds together with the Able message.” With a growing t-shirt line and the initiative gaining momentum, what’s next for Able Cause? “We are so excited to launch a fresh, bright summer series with the messaging,” says Sam. “I’ve got a couple of designs that I'm actually wearing. I wear my Able t-shirts every day, regardless of what I'm doing! “And at some point, I’d love to start an early education program in daycare centres for pre-kindy kids. Daycares are the hub of future societies, so I'd love to get an inclusive program going that helps kids understand that ability is everywhere. It takes many forms. So that when they do meet a kid with disabilities in school, whether it be an intellectual disability or a physical disability, there is a positive pathway to them thinking about that person. “It's important to tell the story so that other people understand that disability doesn't discriminate. It can happen to anybody at any time in any form. But it

shouldn't make a person seem lesser or less important or less valued. There's so much that people can offer in different ways.” Sam says it’s about gaining perspective. He says we need to better understand what it actually means to be able. “It’s not just walking down the street; it’s being able in overcoming obstacles, growing, inspiring ... If I can get that message out to everybody through our living example, then I think that’s our goal achieved.” Oh, yes, back to the seismic shift. Hearing Sam’s story and passion struck a chord so deeply with my own family, after we also experienced recently how indiscriminately childhood disability can strike. I painfully understand how the word ‘ability’ takes on such a different form, when your own child can suddenly no longer run and jump, and you find incredible ability in so many other ways. It was a phone call that shifted my thinking from anger and heartbreak, to energy and determination, to jump on board the Able Cause. #GotTheTShirt

Climbers ages six and over can traverse along tight ropes, scramble across nets, balance on bridges and soar through the air on a zipline! “There is something for every level of participant, starting from the age of six and ranging up through all ages and skills to the most capable climbers, who will enjoy the challenge of the three most difficult courses which reach up to 18 metres above the ground,” says Treetops Adventure Group, General Manager, Nicolas Dansin.

“It’s our first ever urban outdoor ropes course, but excitingly we’re also able to bring everyone a little closer to nature with our ziplines flying climbers over the creek! Also, being located at the Sunshine Plaza means that anyone can enjoy a full day of adventure.” K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

RECIPE

CHOCOLATE EASTER RASPBERRY NESTS Easter baking, anyone? Here is a simple healthy Easter recipe that the kids can easily make with you. Using a variety of wholefood ingredients, there is sweetness, sour, crunch in every bite. They look cute and are utterly delicious! MAKES 12 | COOKING HANDS-ON TIME: 10 MINUTES | COOLING, FREEZING TIME: 1 HOUR INGREDIENTS:

• ¼ cup of coconut oil • 1 tbsp of honey • 1 tbsp of cocoa • 2 cups of puffed rice • 2 tbsp sunflower seeds • 1 cup of frozen raspberries • 1 tbsp of water • 1 tbsp of shredded coconut

METHOD

1. Warm the coconut oil, honey and cocoa on a low heat to combine, stirring the whole time. This can be done with supervision from around five years of age. For young children, the adult can do this then remove from the heat into a different bowl. 2. Once all the ingredients are combined, remove the pot from the heat and add in the puffed rice. 3. Stir the puffed rice through and sprinkle the sunflower seeds in while stirring. 4. Line a muffin tray with little patty cases and spoon out the mixture evenly amongst 12 patty cases.

5. Measure out 1 cup of raspberries and if frozen, add in 1 tbsp of water and using the back of a fork, mush them up a little. 6. Spoon out the raspberries evenly over the rice puff mixture. 7. Sprinkle a wee bit of coconut over the top and pop the muffin tray into the freezer for an hour to set. 8. When ready, take them out and enjoy! By Mandy dos Santos

AUTUMN READS FOR BIG PEOPLE THE BOOKS THAT ARE AT THE TOP OF OUR READING LIST THIS SEASON.

LATER

STEPHEN KING Jamie is a young boy with an old soul and a unique ability—he can see ghosts. His literary agent mother finally believes him after he knows where his dead neighbour’s wedding bands are hidden, but they both agree to never talk about it. Until one day, his mum needs him to speak to a recently deceased author who was set to help them out of a financial funk. And when his mum’s girlfriend, a police officer, bears witness to his gift, he gets dragged into something ugly. What follows is an interesting story that mixes crime with horror and a sprinkle of Stephen King’s larger supernatural world that he has built through years of narrative. Through Jaime, Stephen King has this amazing ability to make the surreal seem so normal and rational. Like it is an everyday occurrence to see dead people exactly as they were when they died (hence the horror component)!

NEVER SAW ME COMING

by Vera Kurlan Psychopaths. Murder. Suspense. Spicy romance. What else could you ask for in a book? A group of psychopaths are given free tuition to attend a chosen college. The only condition being that they must participate in a clinical study for the duration of their time at school. Sounds great right? Well there is one problem— someone is killing them one by one. But who? Never Saw Me Coming challenges the idea of what it means to be a psychopath and offers an insight into what it is like to live with this diagnosis. This book is definitely fun with a sprinkle of Michael Myers.

LUCKY

by Marissa Stapley What would you do if you were on the run from police for fraud and embezzlement but held the winning ticket to $360M !? If you cash it in, you go to jail. If you hold on to it too long, the cash prize expires. Lucky is a grifter by trade—having worked with her father for as long as she can remember. When her dad ends up in jail, she continues working on schemes with her boyfriend until they decide they have had enough and plan an escape. But things don’t work out. Fun, full of suspense and very well written, Lucky is the perfect weekend read.

HEART SICK

by Jessie Stephens Heart Sick is a look into heartbreak through the eyes of three individuals—Ana, Claire and Patrick. All three stories delve into one significant relationship of that person. The excitement, the intensity and the desperation of each is striking. You can feel their love, loss and pain. It is both a whirlwind and yet wonderful to read. Difficult to put down, the only thing that would make this book better would have been a happy ending for each person. But Heart Sick was never intended to deliver on that— because life isn’t like that.
