Perpetration of child abuse has affected some of our respected and loved institutions – Jerry Sandusky with Penn State, Adrian Peterson with the National Football League, leaders with the Boy Scouts of America, and within the halls of religious organizations. It even makes its home here in the sunny desert of Central Oregon.
In January 2014, child abuse was discovered in the heart of Bend when a long-time business owner and community member was sentenced to nearly 33 years in prison for sexually abusing young girls during a New Year’s Eve party at Acrovision Sports Center. In February 2014, shock collars and a Taser were used to physically abuse two young girls here in Central Oregon. The accused is currently being held in the Deschutes County Jail. As a community, we all have a role in keeping our children safe. For some children this truly is the difference of life and death so please speak up and you may be the one to save a child. What can we do to keep our children safe? Get Involved. By talking about child abuse within our community, we increase awareness. Talk about abuse with family members, friends, and neighbors. Become an assistant soccer or baseball coach, be a volunteer with your church, offer to help at school. Be Aware. Listening to, and believing, our children is key to the detection of child abuse. Be attentive to the friends and schoolmates of your children. Be Educated. One of the most effective tools in preventing child abuse is education. KIDS Center encourages everyone, individuals and businesses alike, to attend a Darkness to Light training to provide them with the tools and knowledge necessary to combat and prevent abuse. Darkness to Light, and many other KIDS Center educational offerings, can expertly prepare you for the realities of the world around you and your children. Each and every one of you deserves our sincerest and most profound thanks. We don’t exist without you, our community. It’s because of you we are here and working to keep Central Oregon a safe home for each and every child. All of us at KIDS Center are so thankful for your continuous support and appreciation.
