Open doors 2019... Explore Hidden Treasures of Wales’s Culture and History Free of Charge. It’s that time of year again when families can discover and explore the hidden treasures of Wales is culture and history. Cadw, The Welsh governments historic environment service, Offers both local people and visitors alike the chance to explore free of charge. Many free days are listed in the Kidscene ‘Whats On guide’ but for a look at everything on offer go to Cadw.gov.wales

It’s Theatre Season! The coming months are the best time of year to take a family trip to the theatre. There is plenty of choice for everyone’s tastes, whether you like comedy, history, a great family show (The Scarecrows Wedding, showing at Swansea Grand) or a good Halloween scare (Frankenstein for Kids, showing at the Ffwrnes Theatre)

Gwili Railway Ghost Express Halloween Trains This year the Gwili Railway are pleased to announce that due to the massive success of last years Ghost Express Halloween Train we will be running it again over three days and nights. This year we will be running on the 29, 30 and 31st October. With our spooky Ghost Express running at 11:00/13:00/15:00 during the day and at 17:00 and 19:00 in the evening. Please note we have changed the times advertised in our leaflet to make it a family friendly event. The railway will be dressed for

Giveaway! New York City Big Book Award Winner – The Short Straw!

take your pick! One of the best shows coming up, which is a must see, is Horrible Histories. The live show is as good or I might say, even better than the TV programme. It is funny and extremely entertaining for all ages which makes it the perfect half term treat! See the Terrible Tudors and also the Awful Egyptians at Swansea Grand Theatre from Oct 30th Nov 2nd.

Dare you enter the haunted house? If you enjoy a good fright then you’ll love Irene Mathias’s picture book – The Short Straw! A great book to tingle the spine at Halloween whilst out trick or treating. The dark tale is told in a lilting lyrical rhyme that builds up a rhythmical pace and suspense as we follow the young boy into the haunted house. Irene’s wellcrafted poetry has been beautifully interpreted by Anja’s breath-taking illustrations as together with the spook we spy on the unlucky lad! It’s a sure fire classic to be enjoyed every October holiday. And there’s a great hair standing on end twist in the tale!

Halloween as well as our trains, carriages and stations. The family friendly event will include in the event tickets, Trick or Treating, Live Magician, Special Guests, Food and Drink and refreshments will also be available alongside the spooky fun. Prizes will be awarded on the days we run for best costumes.

The first name to be drawn out will win the prize!

Tr y S o m e t h i n g NEW This year! Prepare to exercise every one of the 638 muscles in your body while being low impact, low stress and revitalising. Rebounding is suitable for all shapes and sizes, from the young to elderly, men and women and from absolute beginners to professional athletes.

in it, rebounding helps you reduce fat and increase your muscle to fat ratio.

‘the most efficient form of exercise yet devised by man ' Three times more effective than running.

NASA

Whether you want to lose some extra weight, shift that stubborn cellulite, de-stress or just feel that little bit healthier, lighter and brighter, rebounding with Just Jump has it all covered. Just Jump rebounding classes started at the beginning of April 2019 and are already going from strength to strength. Working from local community centres around Swansea, the classes lasting 45 mins are small with 12 bellicon® rebounders per class. The bellicon® is an extremely high quality rebounder with incomparably high elasticity due to the bungee ring suspension and top quality bungee cords. Training on a bellicon® is therefore quite different to the conventional spring trampoline. Workouts are pure fun with great music and not too much choreography, so don't worry if your rhythm or coordination is not the best, it will improve quickly! What i can guarantee though, is that rebounding will change your body shape as it tones and tightens your muscles and skin. I can also guarantee that it will de-stress you!

A fun way to relieve stress... Rebounding is not just about working out and losing weight, it’s also a fun way to relieve stress. People are now very aware of the power of exercise to combat the negative effects of stress, and bouncing on a rebounder is the best way to release that stress, increase balance and move your lymphatic system, all while burning fat and having lots of fun without adding extra stress on your joints.

So how does it work?

Rebounding relies on the repetitive bouncing on a trampoline and is lots of fun for many people but did you know that bouncing up and down this way actually has profound detoxifying, energizing and strengthening effects on the body? Think about your day. Most of our time living and exercising is experienced on the horizontal plane as we sit at work, walk etc... Rebounding is unique in that it takes our energy into the vertical axis, so that the beneficial forces of gravity related to acceleration (g-forces) can be accessed to maximize impact on the body. Cleansing and Cellulite During your bouncing, the thyroid gland is stimulated which consequently leads to less fat and cellulite. As you perform repetitive bounces on your rebounder, the thyroid wakes up and begins cleansing itself and the entire lymphatic system of any stored fat. This consequently leads to cellulite elimination from the inside. Apart from the cellulite-loss and calorieburning properties that are involved

Healthy Bones Regular rebounding also has a lot to offer to your muscles, bones, and your entire skeletal system. The G-force which occurs the very moment you land on the surface of a rebounder, applies gentle pressure to your bones, thus strengthening them, bounce after bounce. This also affects your joints, ligaments, and tendons which become stronger too. Training using a rebounder increases bone mass and bone density which in turn promotes a healthy skeletal system and prevents skeletal problems like osteoporosis. Older people can benefit from using a rebounder regularly as well. One of the most characteristic properties of human bones is that they become stronger under pressure. On the other hand, they tend to become weaker when there’s no stress involved. Balance & Coordination Many people who are new to the world of rebounders find it difficult to maintain their balance during their bouncing in the beginning. However, after some training, their bodies get accustomed to the landing on the rebounder surface. This can boost the balance of any individual as the body learns to re-adjust between consecutive bounces. Repeating this process frequently allows the body to learn how to quickly readjust at every loss of balance in the future. Moreover, as the ocular nerves and the inner ear canals are stimulated during your bouncing to allow you to land safely, a wholebody cooperation and coordination are promoted to give you an even greater sense of balance. One question i do get asked a lot is about bladder control after having children. The good news is that rebounding can actually be incredibly effective for bladder control. Bouncing on an unstable surface provides a constant balance challenge leading to the involuntary contractions of the deep core muscles and the weakened sphincter muscle (experienced by many women and new mums). Through low impact exercise, strength can be regained – it might not come straight away, but it will develop over time. To try out a class, get in touch to book your space. Title: Never Get Bored (aged 7+) Written by James Maclaine, Sarah Hull and Lara Bryan. Illustrated by Jacob Souva, Ellie O’Shea, Kyle Reed and Briony May Smith. Publisher: Usborne A beautiful scrapbook of captivating ideas for children to dip in and out of, with something for all weathers. Whether stuck in doors on a rainy day, fed up on a long hot weekend or passing time while waiting for something else, Never Get Bored encourages children to be more productive, develop creativity as well as literally stimulating children into activity.

Title: Young Heroes (aged 7+) Written by Lula Bridgeport Publisher: Stripes Learn about more than 100 extraordinary children from around the world. This thought-provoking book highlights a diverse range of outstanding young people who have used their talents, brains, guts or tenacity to achieve something. The real-life stories can be used as motivational pieces to encourage children from all walks of life as well as inspiring many adults too. Covering so many areas makes it an empowering read serving to remind us that we are all individuals with our own strengths and abilities, ideal for pupils struggling with difficulties in certain subject areas. The fields covered range from famous legends such as Mozart to contemporary big hitters such as Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook. Some of the other success stories included come from the world of business, sport, environmental champions to LGBT campaigners. A great book to keep in your school library to show what can be achieved if you put your mind to it. These young heroes could act as a catalyst for children to discover their own inner hero too.

The mini projects and tasks are easy to follow with attention to detail both with the instructions and the complementary high quality illustrations. A pot pourri of educational fun! Children can try lots of things from card tricks to drawing and crafts all interspersed with fascinating facts to interest children. They’ll be so engrossed in enjoying themselves they won’t realise they’re learning!

Title: Let’s Perform (ages 7 – 11 years) Written by Cath Howe Publisher: Bloomsbury Education Drama practitioners, literature teachers or anybody working with children will love this godsend of a book. Devised by Cath Howe, a talented and passionate writer of drama resources for children. Let’s Perform is a treasure trove of material for anyone wanting to develop children’s ability in public speaking and performance by engaging them in creative and imaginative activities. Aimed at KS2 pupils, this book is packed full of classwork ideas with dramatic monologues, duologues and poems. A fabulous resource to have on the shelf if you need activities to stand by for short notice or warmups for your own projects and meetings. Using a foundation of humour to build these presentational pieces is ideal. It takes the pressure off children who are less confident with performing in front of others. Enjoyment to be had at all levels which will defuse worries if children are not yet accomplished actors. Great moral booster for the whole group!

sought after I found it hard to be a able to respond to the demand. I then created a clinic space where I was able to offer more appointments and manage my home life a little easier. Having worked for many years as a registered midwife, I found that I missed the contact with women and babies when I moved away from the NHS into higher education. Anyone who knows me knows that I am passionate about helping women to breastfeed, and it is ultimately this which motivates me to do what I am doing now. My passion for providing this care stems from having my own children and quickly realising that breastfeeding is not easy and mums who choose to do this sometimes need skilled help. It is important that this help is evidence-based and up to date, rather than old wives tales which worked for their neighbour! How many children do you have?

With Lily Evans

Tell us about your business.

I run a small business based in Swansea, called Breastfeeding Swansea. The service I offer is mainly breastfeeding support as I am one of the very few International Board Certified Lactation Consultants in Wales. A lactation consultant is someone who has undergone rigorous training to become a specialist in managing complex feeding issues. There are many reasons why I may be called upon. It might be that a mum needs help with getting her baby attached to breast breast comfortably, baby is not gaining weight as expected, or is showing signs of an intolerance or allergy to something in milk for example. I have a special interest in treating babies with tongue tie who are struggling to feed, either on the breast or bottle, and have undergone further specialist training to be able to do this. At the moment there are only three private tongue tie practitioners in Wales, and I am the only one in Swansea and surrounding areas. Where did you begin and what motivated you to start your own business? Once I had the correct insurances in place I was ready to start and began by setting up a Facebook and Instagram page. I am lucky enough to know a talented web designer who also created my website, www. breastfeedingswansea.com. I began by offering home visits which I really enjoyed, but as my service became more

I have two beautiful daughters, aged 4 and 9 who keep me very busy. Being a mum is not easy, but I feel incredibly privileged to be their mum and they have taught me so much. They make me laugh every day without fail, and a rubbish day can quickly be turned around by their little hands being flung around my neck! How do you juggle childcare? Childcare has also been very difficult for me as I live away from my family, so don’t have any form of constant, reliable help. I have had to rely on paid help much of the time as my husband has worked abroad for long periods of time since having the children. What’s been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? I would stay that childcare has been my biggest challenge so far! I have always wanted to be able to respond quickly to parent’s needs for a high quality service when they need it most, and this sometimes means evening or weekend appointments which has taken some master planning on the childcare front. I am fortunate to have some very dear friends who have helped me out when I haven’t been able to use paid childcare, which has helped to ease the burden of “mummy guilt” for leaving them to work. What advice would you give to other mums wanting to start their own business? Do it. Whilst this experience has been challenging in many ways, I have thoroughly enjoyed it so far and have started planning future projects. If you have a passion for something, you will succeed and the fire in my belly has definitely driven me to this place.

SCARY

Ghost

LOLLIES

YOU WILL NEED: · 250g White chocolate · 75g Dark or Milk Chocolate · 2 piping bags (available from all major supermarkets) · 12 Lollypop sticks (available at larger supermarkets, Hobbycraft and online) · Greaseproof/Baking paper

Its frightfully close to Halloween and lets creep it real, all the little monsters are after on the day is sweet treats by the bucket load! If you’re looking for an alternative to heading out in the cold on Halloween night, why not trick or treat yourself to these scarily simple ghost lollies. A perfect rainy day activity for kids and a fangtastic addition to a Halloween party. These lollies really are as simple as they look. Younger kids may need a bit of help to keep the top of the piping bag twisted closed, but older kids will be able to complete this independently. y Cover 2 baking trays with a sheet of greaseproof or baking paper and have your lolly pop sticks close to hand. y Break up the white chocolate and place into a microwave safe bowl. Heat in short bursts of 10 seconds on full heat in the microwave, stirring well in between until the chocolate is completely melted. y Repeat the above with the milk or dark chocolate. y Pour each colour chocolate into a separate piping bag and snip the end of the bag to make a small hole for piping. y Pipe wobbly ghost shapes with the white chocolate and gently place the lolly stick into the centre. y Using the milk/dark chocolate, add loose circles for eyes and mouths on top of the white chocolate shapes. y If your kids are anything like mine, you may not get the full 12 lollies due to some chocolate being piped directly into their mouths…if not continue until you have 12 creepy ghost lollies. Place into the fridge to set. Once cool the lollies should easily lift from the paper.

If you enjoyed this and fancy trying a few more kidfriendly recipes head over to our website baking-with-kids.com or find us on Instagram @baking_with_kids.

Living, playing and learning are all the same thing for babies and young children. It is how they investigate, and learn about, the world around them. As parents, we play a vital role in how this happens. The key is to provide variety and stimulation through the play environment that you provide; this will help your precious little one to grow and to learn.

Playing with your newborn

“You can’t play with a small baby” or “how much can you really do with a small baby?” are questions we hear a lot. But the answers are “Yes you can!” and “there are so many valuable things to do”. Parents attending Baby College classes, for example, are amazed to find out how many fun games and activities are suitable even from birth. In those first few weeks and months play most often takes the form of touch-based interactions such as massage, cuddling (which you can never do too much of by the way), tickling, etc. The purpose of this is to strengthen the bond between parent and baby and for babies to learn about how to interact (mummy does something, baby will often react or copy; try singing, smiling and talking and watch those reactions!).

Older babies

Play is becoming more physical – in fact they never stop! Motivation and desire play a huge part in what your baby will want from their play. Rolling and crawling will mean that your baby will have more of a capacity for exploration and investigation (let the

‘baby-proofing’ begin). Being able to handle items with better fine motor skills will mean they will learn about cause and effect (if I do this…then this will happen). Language is also enhanced through play. As a parent, talking to your baby about things that you do helps them to assign words and categories to the things they interact with (is it any wonder we are shattered by the end of the day?)

Playing with a toddler

This looks more like what we might call ‘conventional’ play. Your toddler is still learning a huge amount about the world around them and doing this through play provides a safe environment for exploration. This stage comes with its own difficulties; your little one is also still learning about how to interact with others and turn taking, sharing and co-operation still need to be supported. You can teach this explicitly too. Try some role play between you and your little one; imagination play and role play (with help from a grown up) will allow your little one to establish social norms and learn rules and boundaries. If you need any more reasons to encourage play with your little one then I do have one more - it helps you to rediscover the joy of play yourself. I have seen many a parent enjoying bubbles or rediscovering the fun involved in being silly with their toddler (move like an elephant, copying a toddler dancing or toddler ‘handstands’ being a few of my favourites) Happy playing everyone!

Flexible Working When The Children Return To School. With the school year back up and running, many parents are looking to return to the workplace on a flexible basis and to work around school hours. While many businesses may be unable to accommodate this type of working pattern, more and more companies are seeing the benefit of providing flexible hours to tap into the pool of skilled and experienced parents looking to return to the workplace. Existing staff can benefit too and while there is no mandatory requirement to grant flexible working, parents of children aged 16 and under (disabled children under 18) and carers of adults who have been employed for over 26 weeks have the right to apply to work flexibly. Applications need to be made in a specific format detailing what arrangement the employee wants to propose and how they feel it would fit in with the needs of the business. Crucially, however, there is no requirement on the employer to accept all requests, but they must consider these applications reasonably and fairly.

BE GOOD AT BEING YOURSELF

There are many different forms of flexible working, from home working, part-time working, flexi-time, job sharing and shift-working, plus many other flexi-working options, so establishing the practice that works best for your business can benefit all concerned. Employees who work flexibly often have a greater sense of responsibility, ownership and control of their working lives, where an employee is likely to feel more able to focus on their work and to develop their career. Absenteeism and sickness leave could also decrease. Customers can also benefit, as flexible working potentially allows your business to operate under new hours, enabling better access to your products and services. To discuss a flexible working scheme that can benefit your business, contact our HR specialists Stuart Atherton and Nia Godsmark on 01792 450010 or email advice@plandp. co.uk For more information about drafting a Will, please contact Peter Lynn & Partners on 01792 450010 or email Advice@plandp. co.uk to arrange a free initial consultation and visit www.peterlynnandpartners. co.uk/wills-probate-trusts/for more information.
