Carter’s Story As always, this space is dedicated to bringing you up-to-date on our cover child from the previous year. Sadly, despite a valiant fight, our 2003/04 cover child, Carter, aged 5, was overcome by the cancer he so courageously kept at bay for three years.

Carter showed his fun-loving spirit and zest for life in his fierce desire to learn to skate and play hockey, and his enthusiastic cheering for the Calgary Flames during their playoff run. He demonstrated his newfound confidence by attending Camp SunRise two years in a row, learning tae kwon do with his sister, Teagan, through a Kids Cancer Care of Alberta (KCCFA) sponsored program, and spending a night at Camp Horizon, squeezed into a teepee with 30 campers and volunteers, and sleeping through a thunderstorm.

Carter was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a solid tumour cancer, at 26 months. He represented the classic case – a boy around two, with a tumour on his right adrenal gland. Following 16 months of aggressive treatment and with the help of his parents, Bev and Murray, his sister and many aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends, Carter finally achieved remission and celebrated by going to Disneyworld in February 2003.

For kids with solid tumours, like Carter’s, radiologists look at the tumour image and painstakingly draw it by hand␣ –␣ a time-consuming procedure. But, thanks to two University of Calgary researchers, one of whom received two KCCFA summer intern grants, analysis of tumours will become more precise. Using X-ray computed tomography (CT), researchers can create a 3-D image of the tumour and locate different kinds of tissue within the tumour. This new procedure will help pinpoint treatment and surgery areas, and hopefully bring scientists closer to finding a cure.

Our sincere sympathies go out to Bev, Murray and Teagan. Carter’s beautiful spirit will live on in their hearts, and he will be deeply missed by all his friends at KCCFA. Carter, 1999 – 2004.

dear friends, The Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta celebrated its 10th anniversary of operations with yet another solid year in 2004/05. We stayed focused and kept doing what we do best – providing supportive programming to children with cancer and their families and investing in a brighter future for pediatric oncology care.

The strength of our operations and our unique capacity to raise funds over the past 10 years speaks volumes about the hands that are at the heart of our organization – volunteer hands, medical hands, helping hands. The Foundation’s supporters have been there since the beginning and we’ve accomplished so much because they believe strongly in our vision – a cure for every child, care for every family.

KCCFA evolved from a small committee of parents, nurses and volunteers that organized the first cancer camp for 36 kids in 1991. In 1994, we set up a charitable organization, began collecting donations and launched Kids Cancer Camps of Alberta. Three weeklong camps quickly grew into six, serving hundreds of childhood cancer patients and their siblings. In 1999, Kids Cancer Camps evolved into the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta and expanded its mandate to include funding for pediatric oncology research and clinical support.

Today, KCCFA’s straightforward strategy depends largely on our ability to harmonize the objectives of Camp & Community Outreach, Clinical Support and Research. The kids need year-round, high quality programs; the medical practitioners need the best training and equipment; and the scientists need a nurturing environment, technology and talent to conduct collaborative research. This approach has brought about major progress and impressive results. In just over a decade, we have increased our revenues tenfold, broadened our services to include more than 20 programs for childhood cancer patients, long-term survivors and their families and invested $4.2 million towards finding a cure.

The Foundation now has an 11-member board, 12 full-time staff members and some 275 volunteers. This talented and dedicated group has implemented numerous initiatives and projects to ensure KCCFA’s sustainable growth. Some of the accomplishments that we are most proud of include: • KCCFA’s $3 million commitment to the establishment of the $6 million Chair in Pediatric Oncology at the University of Calgary – This prestigious award will intensify research activities at an international level, leading to an exceptional clinical environment and unique training opportunities.

THEIR RESOLVE TO LIVE LIFE TO ITS FULLEST, AND EMBRACE THOSE FAMILIES WHOSE CHILDREN DO NOT SURVIVE.

• Our support of the Southern Alberta Children’s Cancer Program – Funding educational opportunities for medical practitioners translates into consistent, high quality treatment and care for the children.

• The inclusion of siblings at the cancer camps since 1993 – When a family experiences the physical and emotional roller coaster of a child with cancer, siblings often suffer from feelings of separation, guilt, anxiety 3

and even jealousy. KCCFA reaches out at this critical point and gives brothers and sisters the tools to cope with their feelings and experiences.

• Our ability to remain responsive to the ever-changing needs of our families – This commitment is at the very core of the Foundation. KCCFA continues to identify new program requirements and address them in the most effective and unique ways. Retreat weekends for newly diagnosed and bereaved families are two of the latest examples of our flexibility and readiness to respond.

These and countless other efforts have turned KCCFA into a solid and efficient non-profit organization. We are constantly amazed and humbled by the generous response to our community fundraising events, and we are delighted to share this fundraising know-how with other fledgling cancer organizations in developing countries.

Our good standing has been bolstered by the challenge of creating a centre of excellence for pediatric oncology right here in Calgary. KCCFA funds a number of research establishment awards, educational opportunities and the newest equipment and laboratory infrastructure to attract leading researchers and clinicians. We anticipate that they will achieve distinction and international recognition in children’s oncology research and experimental therapeutics.

To firmly establish this promising new direction over the next three years, the Foundation has completed a comprehensive strategic plan. This plan provides a concrete business framework for the future delivery of programs and services and the implementation of fund development activities.

This report also honours and embraces the families whose children do not survive. Nigel Scott battled neuroblastoma for six years, and our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends on his recent passing. We'd also like to thank Carter's family for sharing his story with us on the inside front cover.

operations overview 1. Camp & Community Outreach In 2004/05, 1,203 children, teens and parents participated in KCCFA’s Camp & Community Outreach programs. This includes summer residential and day camps, teen and family retreats, community outreach and a young adult conference.

The goal of Camp & Community Outreach (CCO) is to achieve excellence in recreation and outreach programming to meet the changing needs of patients and families. In 2004/05, this arm of the Foundation identified four key objectives to guide the evolution and growth of our best practices programs.

The first objective is to ensure that KCCFA’s programs are meeting the needs of all its constituents. To determine this, the Foundation conducted a series of informal interviews with children and their families about their experiences during and after treatment. These discussions identified a significant programming gap in social support in between treatment at the hospital and going to camp. The CCO team has incorporated plans to fill this gap in their strategic planning process and have redistributed resources, which included the hiring of the Community Outreach Coordinator.

kids the opportunity to participate in a variety of artcentred activities, including arts and crafts, music and theatre. We also connected with community stakeholders who can supply tickets to sports events and concerts, to which our families might not otherwise have access.

Enhancing the personal growth and leadership training components is CCO’s third objective. The 2004 Young Adults’ Conference offered participants an array of interpersonal opportunities to enhance self-awareness, promote personal growth and develop leadership skills.

Our Mentors for Life program also continues to grow, with 25 long-term survivors. They provide volunteer support at KCCFA activities, participate in fundraising events and promote awareness of childhood cancer in communities throughout the province.

The fourth objective involves exploring and potentially developing or acquiring residential camp and family retreat facilities. KCCFA’s opportunities to use Easter Seals Camp Horizon are limited. With approximately 100 newly diagnosed kids every year, our residential camping programs are already near capacity. If the current rate of growth continues, we anticipate having to turn kids away. The CCO team is dealing with this challenge strategically by examining other facilities and programming options.

HANDS THAT GUIDE ENHANCING THE PERSONAL GROWTH AND LEADERSHIP COMPONENTS IS A KEY OBJECTIVE OF

KCCFA’S CAMP & COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM.

Camp & Community Outreach’s second objective is to continue expanding the recreational programs for kids on treatment and their siblings, so that there are yearround activities. In 2004/05, we examined the possibility of increasing the number of events for the newly diagnosed and the SunDance program, and we enhanced the itinerary to include a unique art appreciation component, called Graceful Arts. This program will give

In addition to our regular activities, this year we were honoured to host the 22nd annual Children’s Oncology Camping Association (COCA) International Conference in Calgary in November, with 163 delegates from the United States, Ireland and Canada. COCA champions excellence in oncology camps around the world.

Informative sessions included music therapy, kinesthetic learning, and discussions on the unique psychosocial needs of childhood cancer survivors and the value of the camping experience.

2. Research KCCFA recognizes that, over the next 20 years, emerging technologies will result in dramatically different treatments for children with cancer. This will require major monetary infusions, and this year, the Foundation invested a total of $1,129,987 in research.

Our goal is to make a significant impact on childhood cancer research by supporting and encouraging excellence in scientific discovery. We fund specific projects, infrastructure and incentive awards to attract leading researchers and clinicians to Calgary and to provide them with the necessary resources.

HANDS THAT DISCOVER

The Health Research Innovation Centre (HRIC), the first such lab facility in Western Canada, is under

construction at the Foothills Medical Centre. This world-class international research centre will bring together people, facilities and ideas. One of the many research initiatives that the HRIC will house is a new Children’s Cancer Research Centre (CCRC), a focal point for research and clinical care excellence. The overall goal of the CCRC is to develop novel and innovative therapeutic approaches for children with cancer that will ultimately enhance patient survival and quality of life. It is our hope that this centre will attract leading researchers from around the globe. As part of our unwavering commitment to research, KCCFA pledged $1.5 million to the CCRC, of which $500,000 was paid in 2004. KCCFA will raise the remaining $1 million through a special campaign.

The Foundation made its third payment towards the $3 million commitment to the Chair in Pediatric Oncology at the University of Calgary. In keeping with our promise to complete this pledge in five years, KCCFA has now paid $2.2 million to the Chair and will pay our final installment in 2007. We anticipate that the Chair will inspire excellence in pediatric oncology research.

KCCFA also provided funding renewals for three grants totalling $150,000. Each of these multi-year projects focuses on a very specific element of cancer: Wilms tumour (kidney cancer), medulloblastoma (childhood brain cancer) and solid tumour research. We also supported a psychological study that is examining the impact of physical activity on the physical, social and emotional well-being of adolescent cancer survivors, and funded a second study that is exploring pain in children with bone tumours.

In our quest to keep the best and brightest working here in Calgary, KCCFA provided financial awards to Dr. Steve Robbins and Dr. Doug Strother, two key research contributors who are part of the multi-disciplined team dedicated to extending and improving the lives of kids with cancer. The Foundation also funded three research summer students, with the dual intention of assisting the researchers while attracting new candidates to the field.

3. Clinical Support KCCFA’s support to the Southern Alberta Children’s Cancer Program (SACCP) at the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) provides the funding to help push pediatric oncology beyond the status quo, from just treating kids, to finding new and better ways to provide optimum care. In 2004/05, the Foundation contributed $139,859 towards specialized medical equipment, bereavement and sibling counselling, family education, and to support the educational development of key medical practitioners. Collaborating with the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) is vital to progressive pediatric oncology research. COG is an international consortium that develops and shares new and better ways to treat childhood cancer. Several members of the SACCP’s medical staff play leading roles in COG, and must attend biannual meetings to exchange ideas, share successes and failures and plan new avenues to cure children experiencing poor outcomes. KCCFA provides funds for additional staff to attend the meetings because we believe that the SACCP benefits by giving more practitioners the opportunity to access this international

knowledge pool. The Foundation’s ability to support staff development in this way brings new findings back to Calgary, and helps to retain and motivate frontline staff.

HANDS THAT TREAT CLINICAL SUPPORT FUNDING PUSHES PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY BEYOND JUST TREATING KIDS TO FINDING NEW AND BETTER WAYS TO PROVIDE OPTIMUM CARE.

In 2004, the Foundation purchased four blood pressure oxygen monitors for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Oncology unit and a small pharmaceutical freezer for the storage of trial drugs. We also provided a refrigerated micro-centrifuge to be used in the laboratories at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

4. Fundraising KCCFA continues to increase its revenues year over year through a highly diversified fundraising program that generates income from a variety of sources. The Foundation derives substantial revenues from community fundraisers – special events organized by community groups or businesses on KCCFA’s behalf. This year we were thrilled to accept the proceeds from many events, including:

• Vehicles & Violins – The Calgary Motor Dealers Association presented KCCFA with a cheque for $81,439 – half of the proceeds of the 2004 Vehicles & Violins Gala. This 4th Annual gala raised a record amount, which was shared between KCCFA and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.

• Golf a Kid to Cure – Three long-term cancer survivors, friends and families organized a spectacular golf tournament at the Alberta Springs Golf Resort in Sylvan Lake, Alberta. With 144 participants, they raised over $90,000 for childhood cancer research.

In 2004/05, ENMAX and Trico Homes each contributed over $100,000 to the Foundation. KCCFA appreciates that these visionary companies have joined with us to create meaningful partnerships, so we can do more for our families.

The Foundation’s own fundraisers delivered our biggest source of revenues. The 2nd Annual Trico Homes Ride for a Lifetime raised an astounding $207,317. This year, each of the 60 riders was paired with a child with cancer, and collected pledges in that child’s honour.

The Shave Your Lid for a Kid® program had a record 718 shavees willing to relinquish their tresses in 2004/05.

The highlight of our shave campaign was the Big Wig Challenge. Seven of Calgary’s top executives shaved their heads at the First Calgary Savings Stampede Breakfast and raised an amazing $344,024. This unprecedented donation, pledged by friends, colleagues and companies, was designated to pediatric oncology research.

University of Calgary students broke the KCCFA school shave record by raising $80,000 from 124 participants including professors, students and U of C staff. We also had a shavee surrender his locks for the fifth time.

KCCFA hopes to sustain enthusiasm for this program over the next few years by fostering more corporate challenge shave-offs and encouraging donors to make their pledges online.

KCCFA’s Don, Joanne and the Coach – Golf a Kid to Camp tournament raised $116,016 in 2004/05 thanks to the 221 golfers who sacrificed a day of work, and the generous sponsors, led by Arcuri Homes, who donated cash, prizes, silent auction items and food.

While special events are KCCFA’s revenue mainstay, donations from individuals also have increased. Our direct mail campaign, now in its fourth year, has become an important revenue source. In fact, the fall campaign raised over $100,000 – more than both the 2003 spring and fall campaigns combined. Some of the direct mail donors have signed on to the more convenient monthly giving program, which has swelled to 71 participants generating $21,000 annually. The Foundation continues to promote the benefits of planned giving and we have been informed by several of our supporters that they have included a bequest for KCCFA in their wills.

KCCFA is proud of the significant increase in revenue over the last few years. We believe it reflects a growing awareness of the Foundation in Calgary and throughout the province. However, as we seek to achieve more ambitious goals, we intend to place more emphasis on major gift donors and developing new revenue opportunities by cultivating our community partners. The Foundation has recently embarked on a major fundraising collaboration with the Calgary Health Trust and the University of Calgary to finance the new Children’s Cancer Research Centre.

we had 137 volunteers who helped out at camp, in the office and at our many special events. Our volunteers come to us with a variety of skills, ranging from the highly trained medical practitioners who are so essential to our camp activities to those with simply a willingness to help the kids.

With the planned expansion of all KCCFA’s activities, 2004/05 was a time to strengthen our volunteer program. First, we streamlined and standardized the administrative side to ensure our volunteer information is accurate and procedures are efficient. Then, we made recruitment and retention of a strong volunteer base a priority. Finding the right people for the right job presents an ongoing challenge, particularly with the continuing shortage of oncology nurses. To attract new volunteers, we have initiated community partnerships with targeted health and educational organizations. We also began developing a more comprehensive recruitment campaign in 2004, with rollout plans for 2005.

Telling our donors how we spend the money they donate to KCCFA is fundamental to our accountability as a charitable organization. Donors receive our newsletter with specific information on our activities. In recognition of their generous gifts in 2004, we invited major donors and volunteers to a special presentation

by Alan Hobson, a cancer survivor who reached the summit of Everest in 1997. Hobson’s inspirational message to “hold on to your dreams and persevere despite all challenges” certainly resonated with KCCFA as we work day to day to improve the lives of young people with cancer.

The Foundation is also placing greater emphasis on requesting feedback from our volunteers. Garnering ideas and suggestions for improvement from such a dedicated workforce is invaluable to our effective operations.

With a progressive and rewarding volunteer program that uses every volunteer’s potential and skills, minimizes organizational expenses, and is current with industry standards and trends, KCCFA is confident we will continue to attract the very best.

financial overview Our fundraising efforts continue to show steady increases year after year, with donors, sponsors and community organizations either renewing or making their first commitment to support the Foundation.

Revenue Fundraising Events KCCFA fundraising events continue to be a strong source of revenue. In 2004/05, our internally managed events grew in both size and scope. Our shave campaigns showed solid growth, generating $852,050 this year. Our newest initiative, the Big Wig Challenge, made the most significant difference by delivering 40% of the total. The Trico Homes Ride for a Lifetime resulted in a second successful year, increasing the number of riders to 71 and earning $207,317. Our extremely popular Don, Joanne and the Coach – Golf a Kid to Camp tournament, raised $116,016. While generating funds, these well-run events also help boost the Foundation’s profile in and around the Calgary community.

Donations from Other Non-Profits Our stepped-up fundraising activities associated with foundations, community organizations and service clubs are also beginning to bear substantial fruit. Donations from other non-profits increased by 12.8%, or $18,015, from $140,264 in 2003/04 to $158,279 in 2004/05.

Community Fundraising Events The area showing the most significant growth in 2004/05 was the community fundraising events, which jumped 37.6% or $142,817 over the previous year.

Central to this growth is the contribution from the Calgary Motor Dealers Association through the Vehicles & Violins Gala, which brought in $81,439. Another

significant contribution came from the Golf a Kid to Cure tournament in Red Deer, which raised $92,000. In addition, two organizations that have been long-time supporters once again chose KCCFA as the beneficiary of their golf tournaments – Toromont Process Systems raised $54,000, while Cargill Foods collected $32,000.

Individual and Corporate Donors In 2004/05, revenues from individual and corporate donors dropped by 12.3% or $68,951 over the previous year. Despite growth in some areas, like direct mail, our results were affected by a one-time gift of $100,000 from a corporate donor, which we received in the previous fiscal year.

Expenses We are proud to report that our largest increase went to Research, primarily to fund laboratory infrastructure.

Clinical Support also received more financial resources for equipment and educational opportunities. And, Camp & Community Outreach received a modest increase for the development of new and existing programs.

Research Programs KCCFA’s funding to Research jumped in 2004/05, increasing from $738,214 in 2003/04 to an astounding $1,129,987 in 2004/05. In addition to our multi-year research projects, this past year we funded a psychological study and specialized research equipment. Our largest investment was a $500,000 contribution towards the Children’s Cancer Research Centre (CCRC), which is in the final planning stages. By committing to make the CCRC a reality, the Foundation expects to sustain a high level of research funding over the next two years.

Camp & Community Outreach Programs

Volunteers

Camp & Community Outreach expenses increased by 10.6% or $40,852 in 2004/05 to a total of $424,684, because we continue to expand our programming to address gaps identified in 2004. These increased activities required more resources, supplies and the addition of a full-time program coordinator. This year, KCCFA was pleased to support the Children’s Oncology Camping Association International Conference, which took place in Calgary. The Foundation also provided operating funding to Jamie’s Preschool, an early childhood education program for children on treatment.

KCCFA’s volunteer expenses went up moderately in 2004 by 14.5%, or $9,480, to a total of $74,997. As the Foundation’s activities increase, our volunteer program is taking on a larger role, making improved volunteer training opportunities and enhanced volunteer recognition essential. In 2004/05, volunteers contributed 8,460 hours, giving the Foundation more value for every dollar spent. As part of the celebration of our tenth anniversary, KCCFA held a special volunteer recognition event.

While the costs of this event were higher than usual, we were fortunate to secure corporate sponsors.

Clinical Support

Expenses as a Percentage of Revenue

KCCFA’s investment in Clinical Support increased by 25.5% to $139,859 in 2004/05 from $111,429 in 2003/04. Funding included the purchase of four blood pressure oxygen monitors for the Alberta Children’s Hospital. We also increased travel and education opportunities for medical professionals.

KCCFA carefully manages our expenses to ensure that we invest the maximum in our charitable mission. In 2004/05, the Foundation invested $1,694,530 in our giving activities. This is well above the disbursement quota as legislated by the Canada Revenue Agency.

Fundraising KCCFA’s fundraising expenses increased by 4.5% or $18,185, from $403,056 in 2003/04 to $421,241 in 2004/05. This increase was primarily due to increased donor recognition expenses, which included a tenth anniversary celebration to honour our major donors.

We were fortunate that much of the cost associated with this event was offset by corporate sponsorships.

General and Administrative Administrative expenses increased marginally by 4.7% or $13,597 to a total of $305,155. This is reflected in the Foundation’s program expansions and increased fundraising activity, which in turn affected costs such as postage. In 2004, KCCFA also initiated a comprehensive business planning exercise to build our strategic plan for the next three years. The cost of the plan was covered by one of KCCFA’s corporate partners.

One of our core objectives is to keep administrative and fundraising expenses to an effective operating minimum.

To gauge our success, we compare KCCFA’s results to accountability measures. According to industry standards, as outlined by the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy and several American “watchdog” organizations, a reasonable range for the combined administration and fundraising expenses is between 25% and 35% of revenues. KCCFA is pleased to report that in 2004/05 our combined expenses were 28.3% of revenues, well within that range and down from the previous year’s expenses of 31.6%.

The Foundation is able to maintain expenses and maximize revenue opportunities through the committed support of volunteers and donors who organize fundraising events on our behalf. We applaud these dedicated individuals for enabling us to invest the bulk of our revenues into programs for the children and the families we serve.

The Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta began as a promise in 1991. Since then, it has evolved into a beacon of hope for hundreds across this province.

I took up golf. It didn’t replace all my sports, but I was physically able to do it. It gave me something to look forward to between treatments and it gave me goals to strive for.

Treat cancer like it’s a stepping stone, not a life-halting event.

When visiting a cancer patient:

Friends and loved ones are as important as doctors and medicine. Be there for them, and treat them the same as you always have.

KCCFA enabled me to turn my duel with cancer into something productive. It’s satisfying to know that you can help others in the same predicament. The camps, retreats and conferences give me the skills and smarts to deal with my often surreal life.

Getting through the treatment:

The treatments are a small price to pay for living. That’s what gets me through.

Advice for the newly diagnosed:

Try to relax and befriend your doctors and nurses, and love them because they are trying to save you.

When visiting a cancer patient:

Don’t treat us differently, like a hairless cat you’re seeing for the first time. Just be a friend and spend time like there’s no tomorrow.

FOOD! Writing out the menu of food that awaits you after treatment brings beautiful images to mind.

Spokeskid experience:

Giving a speech at a corporate golf tournament and seeing grown men in tears. I felt I had got through to them and I’d made a difference in their understanding of the importance of supporting KCCFA.

Advice for the newly diagnosed:

Remember that going through this experience makes you special. It will change you forever, so stay positive.

When visiting a cancer patient:

Bring us something to do like cards or a game to take our minds off being in the hospital. And remember, this is when we need our friends the most.

Putting me in touch with people who have been through the same experiences, and giving me the chance to give others hope, fundraise for a cure, help out at camp and raise awareness.

Advice for the newly diagnosed:

Never give up, keep fighting. Cancer can be scary, but you have so much to live for.

When we’ve seen lots of doctors, been poked with countless needless, thrown up dozens of times and feel like it can’t get any worse, just remind us that there’s a wonderful life waiting for us outside.

KCCFA is part of my support system. When I was spokeskid, I told my story at a golf tournament, and they passed an empty water pitcher around the audience. By the time I had finished my speech, that water pitcher was full of money. It was awesome knowing I made that happen.

Getting through the treatment :

Staying positive. It was mental over physical.

When visiting a cancer patient:

I had a lot of visitors when I was sick, and when I was well again we had a “hot dam hallelujah party,” because it was amazing that all these people supported me. My best visitor always brought a movie and we’d curl up together and watch it.

“My goal is simple – I just want to prolong my time so I can continue living the best life I can.” Nigel Scott, aged 21

Nigel’s Journey Nigel Scott, 21, takes long laboured breaths as he struggles to answer questions over the phone. It’s hard to believe that he’s the same vibrant young man pictured in KCCFA’s spring 2004 newsletter. Nigel was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of pediatric cancer, at the age of 15. He’s undergone many surgeries to remove tumours, a blood stem transplant and countless rounds of radiation and chemotherapy to combat his disease. In September 2004, Nigel found out that there’s little more the doctors can do to save him except try to slow the growth of his tumour and relieve the pain.

Nigel never gave up… and neither will we.

But despite his prognosis, Nigel feels truly blessed. In 2004, he was able to fulfill a lifelong dream and serve in the Canada Edmonton Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for three months. Nigel is a devout Mormon, dedicated to serving people and teaching them about Jesus.

He also has an incredibly strong bond with his family and many good friends. “I know my cancer has given them a lot of hardship, but I believe that life’s difficulties bring people together and make them stronger,” he says.

Nigel made his closest friends while attending Kids Cancer Camps. Initially he thought it would be like a “death camp,” but his siblings had such a good time, he decided to try it out. “I had a blast – I stepped out of my comfort zone and participated in all the activities.” Nigel gave back by becoming a camp counsellor and working with the other kids. He says that although he’s gone through almost everything you can with childhood cancer, you come to realize that there’s always someone worse off than you.

Cancer may have weakened Nigel’s body, but it has strengthened him personally. He says he’s had so many wonderful opportunities over the last six years. “At times I feel overjoyed for all I’ve been given and every year gets better. I’m not sure how I’m going to top 2004. I guess my goal is simple – I just want to prolong my time so I can continue living the best life I can.”

Nigel Scott died peacefully at home on May 17, 2005, surrounded by his loving family.

Except as explained in the following paragraph, we conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. These standards require that we plan and perform an audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. Accordingly, our verification of these revenues was limited to the amounts recorded in the records of the Foundation and we were not able to determine whether any adjustments might be necessary to revenues, excess of revenues over expenses, assets and net assets.

Revenue Recognition

For the Year Ended January 31, 2005

The Foundation follows the deferral method of accounting for contributions. Restricted contributions are recognized as revenue in the year in which the related expenses are incurred. Unrestricted contributions are recognized as revenue when received or receivable if the amount to be received can be reasonably estimated and collection is reasonably assured.

Gifts received in kind are recorded at the fair market value determined at the date of contribution.

1. Purpose of Organization Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta is incorporated under the Alberta Societies Act as a non-profit organization and is a registered charity under the Income Tax Act. Therefore, under Section 149, the Foundation is not subject to the payment of income taxes.

Property and Equipment The Foundation dedicates fundraising efforts to three areas: Camp & Community Outreach The Foundation provides free, year-round support opportunities for young people and their families affected by cancer. The Foundation manages residential and day camps for six weeks every summer for children, teenagers and young adults, aged 4 to 21, in various stages of cancer treatment. During the year, the Foundation also runs youth recreational programs and hosts a variety of supportive conferences and seminars.

Research Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta provides funding for some of the world’s leading experts in pediatric oncology research and treatment in Alberta. The results of their outstanding research directly impact the level of care that the pediatric oncology team is able to offer Alberta children with cancer, and ultimately many treatment programs around the world.

Clinical Support Funding from Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta purchases much needed equipment, enhances programs and supports doctors, nurses, psychologists and therapists in the area of pediatric oncology-related medical care and family assistance. Practical and necessary support items aid sick children and their families during hospital stays and clinic visits throughout the entire cancer journey.

2. Significant Accounting Policies The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Canadian generally accepted accounting principles and in management’s opinion, have been properly prepared within reasonable limits of materiality and within the framework of the significant accounting policies summarized below.

Property and equipment are recorded at cost. Amortization is reported using the following method and rates: Furniture and fixtures 20% Declining balance Computer hardware 30% Declining balance Computer software 30% Declining balance Contributed Services Volunteers contribute many hours per year to assist the Foundation in carrying out its service and fundraising activities. Due to the difficulty of determining their fair value, contributed services are not recognized in the financial statements.

Investments Investments are recorded at the lower of cost and net realizable value.

Measurement Uncertainty Under Canadian generally accepted accounting principles, an important concept in the preparation of financial statements is the use of estimates in the determination of assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses and excess(deficit) of revenues over expenses for the year. To the extent that these estimates may vary from actual results, there would be a corresponding effect on various elements of the financial statements.

Disbursement Quota Under Canada Revenue Agency rules, all charities must spend a minimum amount (the quota) on their charitable programs, including gifts to qualified donees. The purpose of the disbursement quota is to ensure that, as much as possible, charities use their tax receipted donations to help others according to their charitable purposes. The disbursement quota test was met for the year 2004/05.
