14th - 18th June: Healthy Eating Week Schools and nurseries get set for Healthy Eating Week Schools and nurseries across the UK are invited to take part in the British Nutrition Foundation’s new style of Healthy Eating Week for 2021, which invites children, teenagers and teachers to ‘Find Your Healthier You’. Taking place from 14-18 June 2021, Healthy Eating Week aims

to encourage everyone to reflect on their lifestyle and find ways to enhance their own health and wellbeing, with a particular focus on what they eat and drink. The British Nutrition Foundation emphasises that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to a healthy diet and lifestyle and, for Healthy Eating Week 2021, the charity will launch a series of new resources, providing information and tools to help children and adults to find their best approach to eating well and keeping active. Roy Ballam, Managing Director and Head of Education, British Nutrition Foundation, comments: “With the challenges we have all faced over the past year, we want to help young people to re-focus and feel empowered to look after their own health. So, through Healthy Eating Week, we will provide a range of evidence-based resources and tools to help the nation tackle the barriers that can get in the way of eating well and moving more. We have lots of new resource specifically designed for schools and nurseries – we hope that everyone can get stuck in, have some fun, and make a positive change for their health.” Free to register, Healthy Eating Week attracts thousands of schools and workplaces every year to take part in a range of group-based and individual activities. To support the new ‘Find Your Healthier You’ format, Healthy Eating Week will focus on five daily themes: Know the facts: Day one will start with the basics of healthy eating, busting the myths around nutrition and giving practical advice on what (or what not!) to eat. Teachers and pupils can all take part in a healthy eating quiz, and challenges range from creating a menu based on the Eatwell guide, to keeping hydration diaries, to making posters on the importance of fibre. Make a healthier choice: Tips and tools will be shared around how students can think about healthier choices. From understanding food labels and getting to grips with portion sizes, there will be a range of educational activities for all ages. Plan for success: Planning ahead can help all of us make healthier choices; on this day, students will be tasked with creating meal planners for themselves and their friends, as well as looking at recipe planners to help them make healthier choices, while not blowing the budget! Be the chef: This day will combine healthy eating know-how with practical cooking tips to help everyone make tasty, healthier meals. Healthier cooking tips will be given, with recipes and ideas for inspiration. Keep moving: It’s not just about what you eat and drink. Being active has many benefits for health and is an important part of a healthier lifestyle. Children, teenagers and teachers can look forward to lots of ‘keep moving’ activities on the final day of Healthy Eating Week. To register for British Nutrition Foundation’s Healthy Eating Week 2021, please visit: https://www.nutrition.org.uk/healthyliving/hew.html

Father's Day Sunday 20 June What is father's day? Father's Day is a day where we show our appreciation and love to our father's, grandfather's, father-in-laws, step father's or someone that has been a father figure in our life. It's a day we visit (or video call for those that are far away) these special people in our lives and often send a card & a gift to say thank you.

As it's time to celebrate all the wonderful things dad's do, we can often feel pressure to spend a lot of money. However, mum's and dad's appreciate the thought, so here's some cost effective ideas for gifts this year. 1. Make a collage of photo's from the best father time memories. You can either stick in a book, on card or in a frame. Average cost £5-£10 2. Make all your dad's favourite food starting with breakfast through to dinner - depending on how lavish your dad likes to eat the cost ranges from £10 - £20 3. Write your dad a poem and draw a picture. So much thought in this gift and costs £0 just your time and you will see the biggest smile. 4. Dad's love pants (& socks) easily purchased from supermarkets you just need to ask mum their size. Costs from £5- £20 5. Tokens make some tokens of things you can do - wash the car, make the tea/coffee, clean his bike again this costs £0 6. Go out for the day - many places offer 'dad goes free' offers check our diary dates fro some ideas on page 24 and check with zoo's and farms.

In the words of Cliff Richard “We’re all goin’ on a summer holiday… ” But are we? Can we? Should we? So many questions and the summer holidays are fast approaching, fear not, Flitch Travel is here to help. The answer in short is YES holidays are back! The wait is over, and excitement is on the rise for summer holidays once more. Holiday planning for this year will be different, you’ll need to assess your individual requirements and you’ll need to be open minded about where to go. First of all, think about what traffic light grading is possible for your family, can you quarantine on return? Is post travel testing affordable for you? There are three colour gradings - Green, Amber and Red, below is an outline of what they mean. GREEN • One pre-departure test up to 72 hours before returning to the UK (type unspecified). • One PCR test on or before day two of arrival in England/Wales. • No quarantine unless a test is positive. It’s worth remembering that other countries’ travel policies will differ from ours; even if the government lists a country as green, we may not be allowed to enter if that country bans international travel. Countries may also have their own testing requirements upon arrival, although many have said they plan to waive quarantine for fully-vaccinated travellers.

8 • May 21 • www.kidaround.biz

AMBER • One pre-departure test. • Quarantine at home for 10 days on arrival in England/Wales. • PCR test required on days two and eight of quarantine (reduced to day five by paying for the cost of an extra test on that day if it's negative). RED • One pre-departure test. • On arrival, passengers must quarantine in a hotel for 10 days at a cost of £1,750 per person. • PCR test required on days two and eight of quarantine (included in the quarantine hotel package). • Passengers must book and agree to pay for a quarantine package before departing for the UK. The colour gradings are set to be reviewed in three weeks’ time and then again in another three weeks and so on for the feasible future. Countries may move up or down in colour. With this in mind, if you know your family can only travel to a Green listed country it is probably safer to book last minute, within two to three weeks of travel, this will ensure you know which countries you can

choose from. If you can quarantine on return, Amber listed holidays will go ahead, should you already have a booking listed as Amber and you cannot quarantine on return, Tour Operators are allowing to amend the date of travel, you can move your holiday to later this year or even next year. Should a holiday been moved into the Red list, your booking will be cancelled and all good Tour Operators will give you a full refund. As an independent Travel Agent, here at Flitch Travel we will only use operator’s that offer our clients full refunds and flexible terms when it comes to moving dates. Holiday inspiration Right now, Portugal & Madeira are on the Green list, the sun is shining bright in both locations and the local tourist boards are welcoming us with open arms, providing easy access to local test centres to obtain your negative Covid result before flying home. Portugal offers a wonderful beach holiday, great food, plenty of choice on accommodation from 5-star hotels over looking the ocean to self-catering complexes by the marina and secluded villas with private pools. All just a short 2-hour flight direct from Stansted. Madeira has less choice on the beach front but makes up for it with spectacular sea views, abundant botanical gardens and walking trails, this is great for an active

family. Madeira has made it slightly easier for us to enter without needing an arrival test if you have had the full vaccination, if not they will offer you a test on arrival, for free! The islands’ location in the Atlantic will have the sun beaming down on you. Thrill seekers must try the Downhill Basket Ride! Jersey is the perfect island escape – somewhere a little bit different and ever so slightly exotic, yet close enough to the UK mainland for you to fit plenty into your island break. If you love the excitement of going to the airport, the feeling of going somewhere far away, then how about Jersey? It’s a one-hour flight from Stansted, has some fabulous beaches as well as hotels with outdoor pools some with waterslides! Plus the island falls within the UK Common Travel Area, so visitors will never need to quarantine on return nor complete any testing from the UK, we must adhere to Jerseys rules and they are currently requiring a negative test which is done on arrival for free. Sea-cation? It’s the ocean version of a stay-cation! We have lots of major cruise lines in UK waters this summer, offering short breaks from as little as 2 nights onboard some of the best ships in the world. You won’t be going anywhere; the ships are all cruising along the UK coastline giving their guests the chance to enjoy all the facilities onboard. Disney, Royal Caribbean, P&O and Virgin Voyages are all taking part to name a few. It’s a great taster to cruising and certainly something different. Talk to us today about your holiday wishes this summer or even summer 2022, we are here to help. Celebrate a summer of art with Octopus Ahoy!

Follow the trail and win amazing rewards and prizes by simply scanning the QR codes on the base of the octopus sculptures; from free icecreams to afternoon teas – this is the fun, FREE activity you’ve been looking for this stay-cation summer. Octopus Ahoy! is an engaging, family-friendly public art trail for all to enjoy – and in a safe, socially-distanced way. Stunning sculptures will arrive ashore on 25th June, taking pride of place in parks, on streets and in open spaces across the Tendring District and beyond. This free, fun summer activity is a chance to visit amazing, artist creations, so why not become a ‘tourist in your own town’, get your step count up in the fresh air, and earn ‘ink-credible’ rewards? The Octopus Ahoy! project is a celebration of local art, history and community spirit, involving more than 60 Essex schools. Originally planned for summer 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic until 2021, the art trail helps mark 400 years (in 2020) since the historical voyage of the Mayflower ship to the new world, with Harwich’s own Christopher Jones at the helm, and celebrates 150 Years of Clacton on Sea. Day trippers in Essex can follow the art trail throughout the summer using the FREE Octopus Ahoy! App which is available for download from 1st June on both App and Android. The app will reveal the locations of each sculpture and allow users to earn amazing rewards for ‘collecting’ each octopus design on the list from the start of the trail on Friday 25th June. In all, there will be 100 quirky octopus sculptures to visit, including more than 30 large, hand-decorated sculptures decorated by local professional artists and generously sponsored by local businesses.

Octopus Ahoy! In partnership with Tendring District Council, is being delivered as part of the celebrations of Mayflower 400™️ and 150 Years of Clacton, by KAT Marketing. Find out more about Octopus Ahoy! at www.octopusahoy.co.uk or join in the conversation on social media using #OctopusAhoy.

Celebration-on-sea! The 150th anniversary of the founding of Clacton-on-Sea. 2021 is the year Clacton-on-Sea celebrates its 150th anniversary and to commemorate this momentous occasion the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) are funding a seafront heritage trail in Tendring from Jaywick

Sands to Holland Haven but also incorporating Clacton town centre to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Clacton-on-Sea. The trail will cover over 5 miles of beautiful coastline and will include new technology to help bring it to life as well as a fun and engaging way to convey Clacton’s story. Listening benches and audio posts will also be added to join and connect individuals with the stories of Clacton through the years. There are many other projects and celebratory events linked with the trail some of which includes: Octopus Ahoy! art sculptures. As part of the celebrations, for 10 weeks in this summer of 2021, from 25th June to 5th September, the Octopus Ahoy! art sculptures will form a public art trail across Harwich, Tendring and the wider Essex area to celebrate 150 Years of Clacton and the Mayflower 400™️ project. To take part, download the Octopus Ahoy! app this summer and win prizes for scanning each octopus whilst enjoying locating the sculptures and admiring the amazing art by local artists. Visit www.octopusahoy.co.uk for more information. A flower feature to mark the celebrations will be on display in the chain plot located next to the stunning memorial garden along Clacton's seafront. This garden is a popular meeting place for both residents and visitors. Clacton 150 Anniversary Wheel. FREE RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES FOR YOU AND YOUR KIDS Rainy weekends are, let’s face it, a part of UK living, and when you’ve got kids, those indoor days can often seem to drag. But instead of wishing for sun, we say go with what you have, and make the most of those cosy days in. Don’t let the grey weather get you down - use it as an opportunity to have fun with the kids and get creative without going anywhere. Here are a few ideas to get you started, using things you’ll hopefully already have around the house: Have An ‘Upside Down' Day No, we don’t mean walk around on your head all day! We mean start the day with bedtime stories

and supper and finish with breakfast! And make everything in between an upside-down day. This could mean having pudding before your main meal, or wearing pyjamas all day and dressing up for bed. Try doing some upside-down drawings and paintings or see if you can read a book upside down (yes it’s tricky!). Make An Indoor Fort If you can’t get out camping, do it inside. You’ll need chairs, sheets and cosy cushions. Fix sheets between two chairs to make a den, and fill the fort with pillows and blankets for a camping feel. You can have a campsite lunch, too: beans and sausages in little tin bowls are perfect. Tell camp stories in the evening by the light of a torch, sing camp songs and enjoy hot chocolate together. There are lots of apps like naturesounds.org that feature nature sounds to make you feel like you’re in the middle of a forest. It will be a ‘wilderness’ adventure without going anywhere! Have A Dress-Up Day If you’re happy to let the kids wear your clothes, give them free rein on your wardrobe and see what

outfits they can come up with. Or, why not let them choose your outfit for you? You can do a catwalk show, take photos and generally enjoy having some allout silly fun with some mad looks. If you have jewellery you’re happy to share and multiple hats to finish the looks off, so much the better. Enjoy A 'Cinema Trip' Watching a film at home can be like a proper movie experience if you want it to be. Decide on a flick you’re all happy to watch, make sure you have snacks in, and then work out what time the ‘screening’ will be. Get the kids to make tickets with all the details on (movie, time, location and ‘admit one’) and ensure you’ve got blankets, popcorn and drinks at the ready. Turn the lights off if you’re watching in the evening, make DON’T FORGET TO MENTION US WHEN CALLING

sure the grown-ups put the phones away or turn them off, to make sure you’re all immersed in the event, and enjoy. Have A Theme Day Choose a theme and set up a few activities to do throughout the day based on that theme. For example, you could choose ‘spotty’ - and you all wear spotty outfits, make ‘spotty’ blueberry muffins or spot paintings and watch 101 Dalmatians to finish off with. Or, perhaps you like the idea of a ‘green’ day instead. This could mean wearing green, only eating green things (hello fruit and veg!) doing some activities in the garden or having a go at painting a lovely ‘green’ scene. The world’s your oyster with this one. Pick your theme and choose two or three activities that fit. Other ideas: rainbow day, nature/animal day, music day, sunshine day, stars day…. ad infinitum!

1066 Adventure Golf At Golf World, Stansted

1066 Adventure Golf is based on local history and we have built it to reflect the design of early Norman motte and bailey castles, many of which were constructed in 1066 after the Norman invasion. 1066 Adventure Golf has also been built to fit in with its surroundings, rather than being made entirely of concrete and fibreglass, which many adventure golf courses are. Unlike these other courses, we have aimed for an eco-friendly and sustainable construction. We have a life size Norman long ship, a castle keep, a thatched turreted house, a working water wheel and many carved wooden figures, all set in a calming water and garden environment. The 18 hole course is made from artificial grass, with contouring, raised levels, rough and fairways. All designed to give a more natural feel, with some challenging holes as well as some easier ones. No need to book on for our Adventure Golf - just turn up! TRAVEL ADVICE

Travelling Safely and Lawfully With Pets

If you are taking a break this half-term for full-on family fun within the UK, I'm afraid we can't help you with the weather. However, we can help with making the journey with pets safer, legal and hopefully less stressful. Car journeys can be daunting for your pet, especially if they are not used to being in a car - they may get car sick and distressed. Therefore, look at some top tips below from Lease.uk. Before you start your journey 1. Go for a walk Take your pet for a long walk before you head off on your travels to burn off excess energy. They’re more likely to spend the journey relaxing if they’re worn out. 2. Feeding Feed your pet two hours before travel – they travel better on an empty stomach and it reduces the risk of travel sickness. Also make sure there’s water in the car in a spill proof bowl. On the journey 1. Keeping your pet safe Make sure you stick to the rules in the Highway Code and keep your pet safe by using restraints. Harnesses are great for dogs. For larger, more active dogs, try a pet guard which can turn the boot into a dedicated pet area. For smaller pets, consider investing in a carrier, crate or cage. 2. Breaks Remember to take plenty of breaks on the journey for toilet stops and exercise, especially if you’re travelling a long way. And remember to keep your pet on a lead when you take them out of the car. 3. Window Shades Invest in some window shades to help keep the car cool and block out direct sunlight. This will make the journey more comfortable for your pet. 4. Keep your pet relaxed Journeys can be stressful to pet, so try and make them as happy and relaxed as possible. This could be as simple as their favourite toy or a blanket from home. DON’T FORGET TO MENTION US WHEN CALLING

5. Cooling down Don’t let your pet hang out of the window to cool down. Not only is this illegal, they could injure themselves. Instead turn on the air conditioning and open windows furthest from your animal. 6. Breakdown If you breakdown while travelling with your pet, don’t let them out unless it safe to do so and make sure you keep them on a lead. When you arrive 7. Let them free As soon as you arrive and it’s safe, give your pet a chance to stretch their legs and run around. This information was provided by leasecar.uk

Led by The Teaching Awards Trust, the annual Thank a Teacher campaign is looking for creative ways for children and their families to thank the school staff who go above and beyond. This year’s campaign is being launched today by Blue Peter presenter Adam Beales calling on children to send a message of thanks to their amazing teachers. Adam will be joined by a host of big names to announce the winners of a number of competitions running all month, including: Celebrated baker Nadiya Hussain judging a baking competition for the finest cookies; The Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler choosing his favourite drawing praising teaching superstars; Beloved author Sir Michael Morpurgo deciding the best poetry submission. Children are encouraged to let their creativity flow, thanking their teachers with songs, poems, and pictures to show what their teachers mean to them, using the hashtags #ThankATeacherDay and #HowWillYouSayThankYou to join the campaign. They are also encouraged to wear something sparkly for their teaching heroes in celebration of the ‘Stars’ theme for the day. With so many stories coming out over the past year of teachers going the extra mile to care for their students, there has never been a better time to appreciate them and the vital work they do. Mary Palmer, CEO of The Teaching Awards Trust, said: “We’re so excited by the plans for Thank a Teacher Day this year and can’t wait to see all the brilliant Thank You videos come flooding in. We’ve got some fantastic celebrity judges who are really looking forward to judging their competitions and seeing how creative children across the country can be in thanking their school heroes. “We’ve had thousands of thank you messages come in over the course of the year and we know how much these mean to our fantastic teachers and school support staff. EDUCATION Woodlands Prepartory School

Welcome to Woodlands Preparatory School Great Warley - a vibrant, healthy environment where children can develop and grow into confident, well rounded individuals. Our wide and varied curriculum is brought to life by the progressive ideas of our excellent teaching staff, who work hard to nurture each child’s individual talents in a supportive and positive way. We encourage each pupil to “be the best version of their best selves”. By helping each child to understand who they are, and how to share and celebrate their qualities with others, we see them flourish academically, socially and emotionally. The Woodlands Way We call this “The Woodlands Way”; and it’s this transformative approach that really makes a difference to our children and their families. At the heart of what we do and in every room in the school you will find the “Woodlands Way” proudly declaring our belief and adherence to the principles we hold dear. At Woodlands we always strive to be the best versions of our best selves – a recognition that in adopting a growth mindset we find ourselves on a cycle of constant personal improvement – always aiming to achieve our Personal Best, whether on the Sporting Field or in the classroom. We hope our children take away with them the recognition that our personalities can exist in different versions and when we identify the best of these, we continue to build upon it throughout life. To achieve this, we cherish the importance of treating others well, forgiving them when they upset us, being generous with our possessions, taking the time to really listen to those around us, being a kind and helpful person – all of which are unpinned by honesty, to others and to ourselves. The Joy of Learning The Woodlands Prep at Great Warley curriculum is tailored to the needs of the pupils and their future aspirations. Taking the National Curriculum as our starting point, departments adapt and enhance their programmes of study to ensure that every pupil is motivated, inspired and challenged. In addition to the core subjects of English and Mathematics, where we adopt a mastery approach, the Woodlands syllabus includes Modern Languages, Science, Music, ICT, Art, Drama, Design and Technology, Forest Schools and PE. It also includes Philosophy used as a tool within the classroom to help children understand the world around them. Classes are small, allowing an individual approach to be offered to every child so that the learning style and pace is appropriate. Woodlands recognises that emotional health and academic development are interlinked, and this is supported with a commitment to wellbeing and mental health throughout our school community which is supported by regular events and initiatives such as yoga and mindfulness. EDUCATION Size matters when choosing the right school for your child

Nestled in the idyllic rural village of Gosfield, Halstead and just a 20-minute drive from Coggeshall, St. Margaret’s Prep School and Nursery has a distinctly home-from-home family feel; small enough for everyone to be known and cared for, whilst embracing the future that our children will be part of. Not too big, not too small, just right. We believe that a happy child is a successful child, and we excel in providing a warm, welcoming and supportive community for our families. By keeping to around 200 pupils, we remain nimble enough to deliver on our promise: to value and treat every child as an individual to bring out the very best in them. Our excellent and enviable teacher-to-pupil ratios are at the optimum for each key stage. With class sizes averaging 14 pupils, we are small enough to deliver a personalised approach to teaching. With a two-form entry, we are big enough for children to unlock their potential and to discover what really inspires them. There are opportunities to take part in a variety of extra-curricular activities from choirs and music ensembles to competitive team sports including hockey, netball, football, rugby and cricket. Most importantly, St. Margaret’s is the perfect size for children to build lifelong friendships and happy memories in and around our seven acres of listed parkland. Preparing your child for a bright future As a truly independent preparatory school, we do not feed to one senior school. In fact, our Year 6 pupils head to more than 18 grammar, independent and local state schools across Essex, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, with many offered a scholarship. Not only do we give our pupils a head-start academically, we also prepare them for senior school life. From Year 3, a timetable of 1 hour-long lessons, taught by specialist teachers in different classrooms is introduced, and the children are encouraged to take responsibility for managing their own belongings and independent home working. Personal Tours Book a personal tour with our Headteacher, Mrs Moss, to see for yourself how St Margaret’s Prep could be the right fit for your family. Her classes offer a systematic and thorough approach to the 11+ curriculum and are delivered in an inspiring way that has resulted in exceptional pass rates over the last two decades and continues to do so. At the same time, Anna is aware that the 11+ process can be stressful for some children and makes it her priority to support the young people’s emotional wellbeing and mental health whilst helping them throughout their exam preparations. Anna also offers comprehensive support to parents as they guide their children through the 11+ process. Because she has been tutoring solely for the 11+ for over 20 years, she is extremely experienced in helping children gain access to the Colchester County High School for Girls and Colchester Royal Grammar School. The reason her students have such high pass rates, is not only due to her vast 11+ experience and knowledge, but also her style of delivery; her lessons are lively and engaging and children often say her lessons are their favourite activity of the week! She offers small group sessions where a thorough approach to the examination is delivered in a systematic way. Anna believes passionately that small groups are the best way to deliver 11+ tuition as a lively and engaging atmosphere can be created within tutorial sessions and children can be more effectively motivated by one another. Keeping groups small means children also have greater opportunity for one-to-one help with Anna if they are struggling with a topic. Anna Spurgeon’s lessons are highly-motivating and inspirational. The children gain in academic confidence, thriving in the energetic and positive teaching style utilised. They enjoy studying English, mathematics, verbal reasoning and creative writing, preparing them not just for the examination at the end but for a love of learning for life. Anna also offers assessments for 11+. For more information about Anna, her teaching philosophies and testimonials from previous clients, see her website at www.11plustutorcolchester.co.uk

CHILDCARE

Free childcare for two year olds

Thousands of parents across Essex already use childcare for their two year olds. Not only does it give you time back for yourself, your child can have the opportunity to learn through play, meet new friends and enjoy new experiences. Early learning at a childminder, nursery, pre-school, or school will give your child a good start to their early education. Your child might be eligible for up to 15 hours per week free childcare if you’re • receiving certain benefits including income support, or income based job seeker’s allowance • child has an Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP) • child is looked after by the local authority, or has left care through adoption or a special guardianship order • child is in receipt of disability allowance For further information click on the following link https://www.gov.uk/help-with-childcare-costs/freechildcare-2-year-olds If you are eligible and you want to talk this through with someone, you can contact the Essex Child and Family Well-being service Family Hub for your district. For details of your local Family Hub click on the following link https://essexfamilywellbeing.co.uk/ You can also look for childcare and read our Guidance for Parents online at Early years and childcare - Essex County Council You should check how your preferred childcare provider/childminder offers the funding to check it meets your needs.

30 hours childcare for eligible three and four year olds

Some working parents can get the extended free entitlement (EFE) which is up to an extra 15 hours funding per week on top of the universal 15 hours funding, this is often called the “30 hour offer”. This is because children can have up to 30 hours a week for 38 weeks which is a total of 1140 hours of free entitlement a year. You should check how your preferred childcare provider/childminder offers the funding to check it meets your needs. You will be able to check your eligibility using the online Childcare calculator - GOV.UK and complete an online application. Before you sign up for the extended entitlement, you need to look at all the options to make sure you choose the best package for you. It is possible that the childcare element of Working Tax Credit could be affected as you would likely be paying for less childcare. If eligible you need to make sure you apply for EFE before the beginning of the term that you want the funding to start. Please note: If you apply for your code after the beginning of the term that you want funding to start, your provider will not be able to claim the extended free entitlement. You will only be able to get the universal 15 hours entitlement that term.
