WELCOME

A

As our loyal and regular visitors to Spendthrift Australia can attest, there have been many major changes to our farm since we began operation in 2015. We invite you to come and see for yourself. Our gates are always open, our stallions are available daily for inspection and we would be proud to show you around our farm. Garry Cuddy General Manager

THE SPENDTHRIFT WAY B Wayne Hughes established Spendthrift in Kentucky with strong principles anchoring his decision-making processes. Never one to shy away from new ideas and innovations, Hughes formulated an approach aimed at keeping costs down and looking after the broodmare owner. “With his experiences early on in the game, Mr Hughes learned a lot as a small breeder,” Spendthrift Australia’s General Manager Garry Cuddy explained. “He might’ve had a few difficulties along the way which helped open his eyes to these game-changing moves.”

F

Following on from this first-hand experience and putting his money where his mouth is, Hughes initiated two innovative breeding schemes: Breed Secure and Share The Upside. Spendthrift Australia have also implemented the same bold strategies, which became even more important for the 2020 breeding season in a world of COVID-19 presenting enormous economic challenges to businesses. “We have to take care of the breeders, and I think sometimes that is overlooked,” said Mr Hughes. “If we don’t have a breeder, then we can’t get a mare, so we don’t have a foal, and our stallion is worthless. You have to think about that.” Hughes views his programs as creative ways to try and improve the industry across the board while also helping his stallions get better books. “We are going to do what is best for ourselves and for the industry,” he said. “It’s not something we are doing as a favour. The reality is for us it is good, and for the breeders it is good.” “If we lose the breeders, we won’t have any farms or stallions. We are all in this together. The whole industry needs each other. Nobody is standing alone in this business, and that’s something we all need to bear in mind.”

6

Spendthrift Australia 2020

“Those breeders are going okay at the moment,” says Cuddy with a laugh. “Mr Hughes always says that without the breeders, we wouldn’t have a business. “It’s also a great way to get a larger book of mares, and get more offspring to the racetrack early on.”

COMPARATIVELY LOW SERVICE FEES

BREED SECURE

SHARE THE UPSIDE

One of Hughes’ first bold strategies is Breed Secure in which the service fee of a stallion is taken out of the proceeds once the foal sells at auction, with protections for the broodmare owner. This risk-free option provides breeders with a mechanism to continue breeding their mares, even in times when cash-flow is a major challenge.

The second strategy is Share the Upside, designed to get full books happening quickly for first-season sires. Breeders who sent mares to first-season Spendthrift sires could pay a small premium on their service fee to own a breeding right for the rest of the stallion’s life, allowing them to send a mare to him each season for free.

“I have long believed that if one of our stallions does not produce a profitable foal in a particular mating, we should bear our fair share of the responsibility for it – not just the mare owner,” commented Hughes.

For a good example, Into Mischief retired to Spendthrift in 2009 for a service fee of US$12,500. Some 20 breeders locked onto the Share the Upside scheme with him, paying a small premium which took their outlay to around US$16,000.

“The focus of the Breed Secure program is on relieving breeders of risk and cashflow issues. All while still allowing them to realise the upside we all hope for when breeding.”

The sensational Into Mischief is now the No.1 sire in the US. Those 20 or so breeders have gone back to him for free throughout his stud life. Everyone else this year pays US$175,000 a pop.

While Spendthrift Kentucky is a massive operation with 24 standing stallions, its Australian wing currently has five stallions. Omaha Beach (War Front) and Vino Rosso (Curlin) are standing their first seasons at $22,000 and $13,750 including GST respectively, with their northern hemisphere fees US$45,000 and US$30,000 in 2020. Of the farm’s three Australian sires, Overshare (I Am Invincible) stands for $11,000, while Swear (Redoute’s Choice) and Gold Standard (Sebring) are $5,500 each. “Spendthrift tries to price the horses at what they’re worth, not over-inflate and then cut people deals. We don’t want people to wonder if someone else is getting a better deal than them,” Cuddy says. “Mind you, if we get a horse we think should stand at $80,000, he’ll stand at $80,000. But mostly the Spendthrift approach is about going for the numbers, and the quality. The income, while not irrelevant, isn’t high on the priority list.”

SPENDTHRIFT AUSTRALIA’S ROSTER GUIDED BY CHAMPION SIRES

Many of the greatest horses around the globe have been bred upon the adage of ‘breed the best to the best and hope for the best,’ and history shows that success often does create more success. Spendthrift Australia have developed their stallion roster with a focus on standing exceptional sons of champion sires so that breeders have a greater chance of high prices in the sale ring and winning races that count.

10

Spendthrift Australia 2020

K

Knowing that you are sending your mare to a stallion with a successful sireline is a considerable factor in the breeding decision and it increases the odds of his speed, soundness and temperament being passed on to the progeny. Take a look at the leading sires list and you will see that majority of the stallions are backed by generations of top sires, attesting to the age-old saying about breeding to the best.

I AM INVINCIBLE

We can see this philosophy represented in the local stallions standing on the roster: Overshare – an identical type to his champion sire I Am Invincible, Gold Standard – who follows in the mould of his Golden Slipper-winning champion sire Sebring, and Swear – a son of the breed-shaping Redoute’s Choice and a fourth-generation champion sire. But Spendthrift Australia have also invested the same focus into finding shuttle stallions that will provide opportunity to every breeder in the Australian marketplace.

REDOUTE’S CHOICE

Spendthrift Australia 2020

11

At 18 years old War Front has established himself as a prolific stallion throughout the world producing stakes winners in the USA, England, Ireland, Hong Kong, France, Canada, the United Arab Emirates and Australia. With 21 individual G1 winners, and a stakes winners to runners’ ratio of 14.8%, War Front’s meteoric rise to stardom will see him continue the Danzig-line legacy.

War Front

sire of Omaha Beach New in 2020, Omaha Beach (USA) (War Front) is a strong addition to the roster being a son of the international super sire War Front who is making waves globally. Omaha Beach, a triple G1 winner with true breed-shaping potential, gives breeders the opportunity to send their mares to a stallion with a successful sireline.

12

Spendthrift Australia 2020

War Front became a stakes winner at three, winning the Princelet S. over 1900m, but flourished later in his career running over shorter distances. As a 4-year-old War Front won the G2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. over 1200m, a race that was promoted to G1 status in 2010 due to the high quality of its winners in previous years. However, as a stallion War Front has demonstrated extreme versatility producing quality stakes winners over distances from 1000m to 2400m, on both turf and dirt surfaces with a stakes-winning rate of 14.8% for his runners on dirt, and a stakes-winning rate of 16.8% on turf. In 2018 War Front was awarded a G1 winner in Australia, despite only having had 11 runners, when Homesman won the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield. War Front’s effectiveness at instilling precocity into his stock is highlighted by his feat of siring three Dewhurst winners in US Navy Flag, Declaration of War and War

Command, with 42% of his progeny winning as 2-year-olds. War Front commenced stud duties at Claiborne Farm in 2007 for a fee of US$12,500 before rising to US$60,000 in 2012, US$80,000 in 2013, US$150,000 in 2014, and US$200,000 in 2016. Since 2017 War Front has stood for US$250,000 and is currently the most expensive stallion in the United States. Despite his continuous success War Front has never covered more than 100 mares in a single season, amplifying his success and ability to produce high quality racehorses. War Front has had 26 yearlings sell for US$1,000,000+, and his progeny demand high prices with a top result of US$2,900,000 for a colt out of Believe You Can in 2019. Sons of War Front have taken their place at stud across the world with Declaration of War having marked success in Australia, winning the Melbourne Cup, Victoria Derby and Queensland Oaks in 2019 with Vow and Declare, Warning and Winning Ways respectively. His son Omaha Beach, who boasts a rare ability to mix brilliant sprinter speed with stamina and toughness, is positioned to continue in the footsteps of War Front who has the same aptitude to sire progeny that can perform almost anywhere, in any conditions.

He was crowned Horse of the Year in the USA in 2007 and 2008, awarded Champion 3YO Colt in the USA in 2007 and Champion Older Male in the USA and UAE in 2008. Now he is the sire of 67 stakes winners, including winners of 21 Group 1 races such as the Preakness, the Belmont Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Curlin

sire of Vino Rosso Vino Rosso (USA) (Curlin) joins fellow newcomer Omaha Beach on the five-stallion roster and fits the mould being a son of elite sire Curlin. With Curlin’s seemingly endless list of accolades, achievements, and awards, he has established himself as a leading sire in North America, and now Australians will have access to his success.

Curlin stands for US$175,000 at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm. His success since commencing stud duties in 2009 has not halted - Curlin has sold fourteen US$1,000,000+ yearlings and demand for his progeny in the sales ring continues to rise with a yearling colt out of Bounding (AUS) selling for US$4,100,000 in 2019. A dominant racehorse winning 11 of his 16 career starts, Curlin was placed in all three legs of the Triple Crown winning the Preakness Stakes before going on to win six additional G1 races, including the Dubai World Cup in 2008. However, his continued success in elite dirt races prevented Curlin’s potential on turf from ever being fully realised. Curlin only raced on turf once in the G1 Man o’ War Stakes where he was second to G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks, beating another Breeders’ Cup Turf winner, Better Talk Now who placed third.

His own sire, Smart Strike, was a versatile stallion who experienced the heights of success with his progeny on both dirt and turf. Smart Strike’s top performer on the turf, six-time G1 winner English Channel, has gone on to sire both turf and dirt winners while fellow son of Smart Strike, Lookin At Lucky, has also produced stakes-performing turf horses. Curlin’s own son Palace Malice had his first G1 winner on the turf when Structor won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in 2019. While Curlin hails from the great Mr Prospector line, Vino Rosso shuttles to Spendthrift Australia this season offering breeders the opportunity to breed on the same Mr Prospector/Street Cry cross that is already familiar to Australian breeders through the feats of G1 winners Con Te Partiro, Lyre, Trekking and The Quarterback. By focusing on champion sirelines, Spendthrift Australia are giving its stallion every chance of success. Not only does it fuel their chances of becoming a champion sire in their own right, but it also gives breeders the confidence their mares will be bred to a stallion with increased odds of producing a successful racehorse.

Australia, both are the legends behind the Victorian farm’s two new shuttle stallions in 2020 – Omaha Beach (War Front) and Vino Rosso (Curlin).

16

Spendthrift Australia 2020

RICHARD MANDELLA Triple G1 winner Omaha Beach is the latest in a long list of stars to pop up in trainer Richard Mandella’s stable. Never finishing out of the top three in his entire career, stakes success came to Omaha Beach in quick succession. He won the G2 Rebel Stakes before claiming the G1 Arkansas Derby on his next start. “He’s learned to fight it out,” commented Mandella after his Derby success. That toughness saw him return after a spell to add the G1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes first up. He then finished runner up in the G1 Breeder’s Cup Mile before

ending his career on a high note with a third G1 victory in the Malibu Stakes. In doing so, he became the first horse in 30 years to win a G1 at 1200m and 1800m in the same year. Upon his retirement to stud, Mandella praised the triple G1 winner, “I think Omaha Beach is as good as they come – they just don’t get any better.” So, who is the famous Southern California native behind the talented and versatile superstar? Saddling his first horse in 1974, and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001, Mandella has been blessed with an endless stream of G1 winners without training huge numbers of horses. Growing up, Mandella worked for his father, Gene,

and broke and galloped horses at Connie Ring’s neighbouring Three Rings Ranch while in high school. Admittedly, he was riding horses from 4.30am before he went to school and then at night would meet his father and train until 9pm on a little track they had at home, so the only time to rest was during school. Mandella’s career statistics to date have seen him saddle 2,167 winners for earnings of $142,901,649, including Spendthrift Farm’s iconic mare Beholder who was a multiple Eclipse Award and Breeders’ Cup winner and became the first horse since 1976, male or female, to win G1 stakes races at age 2, 3, 4 and 5. “In 2003 he [Mandella] won four Breeders Cup races in one day, a record,” wrote Jamie Squire in Sports Illustrated. “He trained the filly, Beholder, to Breeders Cup titles in three different years and she is regarded as one of the best racehorses in recent history – Mandella is a titan.” He previously kept his Hollywood Park and Santa Anita stables with about 60 to 75 horses but when he turned 60, he reduced his numbers to one barn of 40 horses where that figure has since remained. Mandella is widely respected for maintaining consistency in his training methods, not thrown by gimmicks or new-fad training techniques – and that has paid off. Mandella’s training stable has earned at least $1m every year in prizemoney since 1981. “You try it [new trends], but pretty soon you throw that out and go back to what you were doing. The basics are the most important things. I learned them from my father,” Mandella said.

TODD PLETCHER Victories in nearly every major race in North America

have made Todd Pletcher a household name and in just over 20 years his horses have already won more prizemoney than any other trainer in history. Multiple G1 winner Vino Rosso has contributed to that success having remained unbeaten as a 2-year-old and powering home to win both starts by more than two lengths. As a 3-year-old he claimed the Wood Memorial Stakes by three lengths and then went on to triumph in two G1 features as a 4-year-old.

Whittingham at Hollywood Park. After graduating from college, he travelled to New York to work for Lukas as a foreman in the active stable. In 1991, he was promoted to assistant trainer for Lukas, splitting his time between New York and Florida until the fall of 1995 when he went out on his own and made history.

The first G1 victory came in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes and he farewelled his fans with a triumphant last performance to provide Pletcher with his seventh Breeders’ Cup win outrivalling his field by more than four lengths. “He was able to win at 2, 3 and 4 and is a classy type of horse which is what the people are looking for,” commended Pletcher on Vino Rosso’s retirement. “He has a great disposition, he’s healthy and sound, and has all the attributes you look for in a stallion.” These are the words of a legendary trainer who himself has developed a string of achievements that may never be topped. A record seven Eclipse Awards in the past 13 years as the nation’s Trainer of the Year, four of these in consecutive years, 10 Eclipse Awardwinning horses and five Triple Crown race victories. It’s not surprising that Pletcher is renowned for being knowledgeable about every aspect of racing, to the point where he knows every detail about the status of every one of the 175 horses he has in training – a significant increase on the humble six horses he started training with back in 1995. Born in Dallas, Texas, Pletcher’s grass roots were laid at the age of seven when he worked for his father as a hot walker. Throughout his schooling years he worked with Henry Moreno at Hollywood Park and Del Mar Racetracks, D. Wayne Lukas at Arlington Park and legendary Hall of Fame trainer Charlie

POSITIONED TO CONTINUE THE INVINCIBLE SPEED SIRELINE Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) has developed a stellar record as a sire of sires over recent years. It’s even more impressive as his success has not been limited to either hemisphere. The Irish National Stud resident shuttled to Chatswood Stud from 2003-2006 and now has seven sons at stud in Australia and New Zealand.

20

Spendthrift Australia 2020

I

Invincible Spirit is currently regarded as one of the most respected sire of sires in the world, despite having had to work his way up the stallion ladder after starting out on the lower rungs.

Spirit-line stallion impressed breeders with his first crop of foals last season.

He retired to the Irish National Stud in 2003 at a fee of €10,000, and now, 16 years later, he commands a fee of €120,000.

Overshare stood his first season at stud for $11,000 and remains at that fee in his third season, following in the footsteps of his sire I Am Invincible who stood his first four seasons at stud for the same fee and now commands a fee of $209,000.

It was in Australia that Invincible Spirit made his first serious mark as a sire of sires and racehorses, with I Am Invincible proving the long-term star. I Am Invincible’s biggest achievement came when he broke the record for the most stakes winners in a season (2018-19), previously held by champion sires Danehill and Snitzel, with 28 individual Australian stakes winners. Also siring the most 2-year-old stakes winners of any stallion in Australia last year with eight, I Am Invincible secured his first 2-Year-Old Sires’ Premiership after a tough battle with Snitzel. It is thus understandable that Spendthrift Australia added a son of I Am Invincible to their roster with Group winner Overshare. A winner at two and multiple stakes winner at three, the exciting colonial Invincible

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON

He bred nine stakes mares in his first season with his percentage of stakes mares and producers at 16.6%, comparable to I Am Invincible’s 11 stakes mares and 20.3% stakes mares and producers in his first season. He then covered a book of 150 mares in his second season – a direct consequence of his outstanding foal quality. The meteoric rise of I Am Invincible from his humble beginnings bodes well for Overshare. As does the progress of Invincible Spirit’s career during the next few years, with the certainties seeming to be that his list of top-class offspring will continue to grow and that his reputation as a sire of sires will continue to solidify. LARGER SECOND BOOKS INDICATOR FOR SUCCESS As Spendthrift Australia stallions Overshare and Gold Standard head into their third season at stud, we remind ourselves of the challenges that many young stallions face at this point of their career and how both sons of Champion sires have held the attention of breeders to overcome them.

24

Spendthrift Australia 2020

O

the only son of I Am Invincible to have had increased support in his second season at stud.

One of the most difficult challenges stallions face is attracting breeders in their second and third seasons, when ‘hot’ new stallions bound off the track demanding attention.

Very few leading Australian stallions received increased support during their second season, and the path of Gold Standard and Overshare follows the trajectory of some of the most successful stallions in Australia such as Redoute’s Choice, I Am Invincible, Pierro and Exceed and Excel.

For many stallions, this period before they have progeny in the sales ring or runners on the track can end their career before it could ever begin. Overshare and Gold Standard retired to the Victorian farm in 2018 to the warm reception of breeders, covering impressive books of mares by leading broodmare sires such as Danehill, Encosta de Lago, More Than Ready, and Fastnet Rock. In Overshare’s first season, he received strong support and covered 79 mares – 16.6% of which were either stakes winners or producers, an impressive milestone compared to the 20.3% stakes winners or producers covered by his sire I Am Invincible in his first book. Gold Standard also had a successful first season at stud covering stakes

In 2019 the first foals by Overshare and Gold Standard were born, impressing breeders, and resulting in significant increased support. Based on the physical quality of the foals, Gold Standard’s second season book increased by 34% while Overshare’s book jumped to 150. This rise in popularity makes Overshare

BREED SECURE PROVIDING BREEDERS A LEG-UP Having changed the breeding landscape in America, Spendthrift’s Australian arm has turned its attention to assisting Australian breeders by minimising the cashflow risks associated with producing quality stock.

R

Recognising the financial strain and risk faced by breeders, founder B. Wayne Hughes has long believed that Spendthrift should bear their fair share of the responsibility with the mare owner should a particular mating to one of the stallions not produce a profitable foal. Acknowledging the fact that stallion farms should not simply collect money from matings is a unique perspective that encompasses the breeder centric approach held by the farm. Breed Secure is an innovative breeding program to assist breeders, backed by a vision to provide the greatest long-term benefit. It was designed to allow breeders to equal the playing field between the stallion owner and the breeder. Designed with the breeder in mind, they choose whether to sell their resulting offspring as a weanling or yearling at a public auction of their choice. Weanlings sold at auction entitle the breeder to the first $5,000 while it is the first $10,000 that goes to the breeder for yearlings sold at auction. The service fee is payable only after this expense allowance is realised. Any sales proceeds over the amount of the stud fee are pure profit to the breeder. This means in cases where a weanling or yearling does not make over $5,000 or $10,000 respectively, the stud fee is covered by Spendthrift.

28

Spendthrift Australia 2020

FAR BETTER THAN ANY OTHER Different to other breeding initiatives in Australia, Breed Secure is the only breeder’s payment scheme that allows breeders to pay the service fee after selling the resultant foal – therefore after recouping money for the associated expenses. The program ultimately allows breeders to be more in control of their cash-flow while sharing the upside and reducing associated financial risks.

Standard foal shares are structured on the stallion farm providing the cost of the stud fee while the breeder carries all future costs relating to the mating such as veterinary fees, agistment and sales preparation. Once the resulting foal is sold, all profits are split between the breeder and stallion farm, there is no guarantee that expenses incurred by the breeder will be covered should the resulting foal not make a profit, and stallion farms are simply faced with a percentage of one unpaid stud fee.

FOAL SHARE

“The beauty of Breed Secure is that if you take a hit in the sales ring, we take it with you. Yet if you succeed, you get the profit,” commented Spendthrift Australia’s General Manager Garry Cuddy.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE Since formally establishing in Australia in 2015, community engagement and involvement has been at the forefront of Spendthrift Australia. While major farm developments have had a direct impact on local businesses, their actions have also reached Victorian racing clubs and programs supporting animal welfare.

Over the last five years, the extensive improvements to the usability of the farm have included fencing and building completed by local contractors. “We are developing a state-of-the-art stallion operation and we are glad to be supporting local businesses who are helping us achieve our goals,” said Garry Cuddy, General Manager of Spendthrift Australia.

VICTORIAN COMMUNITY “We have been working with Spendthrift since the beginning, installing kilometre after kilometre of fencing. This has obviously been great for our own business but also keeping the demand up for our local suppliers,” commented Brook Grumont of Grumont Rural Fencing. In 2019, building commenced to construct a new office, stallion barn, broodmare arrivals area and stallion parade ring. This extensive project is on track to be completed by 2021.

“I’ve been lucky enough to work with Spendthrift on the construction of their new office and stallion barn – a unique opportunity to build something from the ground up. The project has enabled me to utilize the services of many of my local trade connections, helping our local community,” said Marty Lakey, Owner of Marty Lakey Builder Pty Ltd.

LOCAL RACING CLUBS Spendthrift have demonstrated a commitment to Victorian racing clubs by engaging in sponsorship beyond sponsoring races. In 2018, Spendthrift agreed to sponsor Werribee Race Club, now Spendthrift Australia Park at Werribee. Home to Racing Victoria’s International Quarantine Centre, Spendthrift Australia Park is a key location that allows international racehorses to compete in Australia. In addition, Spendthrift also sponsor the winner’s room at Pakenham Racecourse, supporting the race day experience for owners.

ANIMAL WELFARE Outside of the racetrack, Spendthrift have also recognised the importance of thoroughbred welfare and life after racing. Racing Victoria’s

Off The Track program aims to facilitate the placement of retired thoroughbred racehorses in second careers. Spendthrift are annual sponsors of the program, and proudly sponsor the Off The Track class at the Daylesford Show. Following the devastating bushfires of 2019 and early 2020, Spendthrift sought to be involved in rebuilding the community and protecting native wildlife. Spendthrift donated $25,000 to the Australian Volunteer Support Trust and an additional $25,000 to the Victorian Wildlife Fund. “The Californian bushfires finished right on the doorstep of Eric [President of Spendthrift] and his wife Tammy’s Malibu home, so they understood what Australians were going through. We can see that the bushfires touched the world and we just wanted to do our little bit to help,” commented Cuddy. It is easy for entities to be actively involved in the sales arena, but it takes a lot more time and effort to demonstrate commitment to your local community. Spendthrift are proud to be operating in Australia and look forward to continuing to develop their relationships within the community over the years to come.
