Trefol11AWwardis 0n Teesday September 20th Claire Connal and Claire Harwood attended a county presentation ceremony at Beaumanor Hall to receive the highest award in the Guide section,the Baden-Powel1 Trefoil. They were presented with their certificates by the Director of Education,Mr Wood-Allum,and were watched by parents and guiders.

The girl1s gained their award while members of the lst Kibworth Guide Company.。 They undertook numerous activities including forty hours community service,study of the EEC,first aid,fire fighting,and Patrol Camp pennants. .We offer .congratulations. to both of them.

Sfeve Succeeds for Day Centfre Kibworth can be very _proud of 5teve Taylor, grandson of Mr & Mrs L Reeve of Fleckney Road who recently completed 16 miles of a sponsored walLk for the Roman Way Day Centre. The walk was along the disused railway 1ine.from Harborough to Northampton from 2pm on Saturday and Steve finished at 4.30 am on Sunday morning .

一 Pemy))ne Way Walkers Michael HoLlingsworth and Jeremy Baxter , both nineteen, spent seventeen days -of their _holiday walking the Pennine Way,a total distance of 280 miles.

They were totally self-sufficient ,carrying food,cookepy tent theirf backs,a weight of 40 1bs each. They had very mixed weather and sank 林

Both say it was a very satisfying experience.

Inner Wheel

Clubof Kibworth & Fleckney The evening of Friday 23rd September saw the birth of the Inner Wheel Club of Kibworth and Fleckney which took place at the Moat House Hotel in 0adby .

The evening commenced with a sherry reception at 7.15 pm which was fol11owed ,prior to the meal,by the 1ighting of the candles of Friendship (mine went out).。 The meal was gorgeous and was enjoyed by everyone. What was especially nice was the opportunity,during the meal,to talk to people from other clubs,about their 1ives and interests and the way they run _their cLlubs. It was gratifying so many of them supported the evening , giving us an absolutely marvel1lous StaI 七 .

The evening then continued with the Loyal Toast given by our Secretary , Mrs Rosemary Webb,after which our Toastmaster,Mrs Kay Watson,started the evening off very ably by introducing Janet Hall,District Chairman y who welcomed everyone warmly We then were presented as a Club by Jean Norburn,Past District Extension 0fficer,to the District Chairman.

Jean Norburn has helped us on our way from our ˇvery first meeting 1ast November and nursed us 1ike babies through all the formalities of our Charter evening and the running of our CLub。

Climbing frame from Jumble sale-

英 Kibworth Methodist Hall Playgroup held a very successful jumble sale in the Vil1lage Hall on Saturday September 3rd,making over f136. The stalls included jumble,cakes,books,toys and bric-a-brac. The money has been put towards a climbing frame with sl1ide attachment. The children have already had a great deal of pleasure from it。 Pam,Barbara and Anne would 1ike to say how grateful they are to those who helped by providing jumble,cakes and help on the day . Also to all those who came and supported us - Thank you.

Mr _Keith Senior,President of the Rotary Club of Kibworth and Fleckney presented the Jewel to President Pat Darke,who then gave a speech in which she thanked him warmly. We al1 received our club badges and a toast was given by Rotarian Richard Darke , Founder President of the Rotary Club of Kibworth and Fleckney.

Last but not least,came “the vote of thanks given by Vice President Maggie Starbuck coming in the form of an hilarious speech,part of which was in her native North East tones , setting the seal on what had been a delightful and memorable evening .

It marks the beginning of what we hope will be a successful and happy Club with the three “C「s as its theme: i.e6.。 Consideration Common Sense Confidence also we hope to serve the community where needed and have fellowship with one another together with International understanding .

Kibworth Village Hall Despite the fact that Kibworth vi11age hall still1 needs a number of “finishing touches“to match the_big-scale redecoration that has taken place , the meeting of the Management Committee(September 20th) verged on the lighthearted. It is 17 years since the hall was 1ast given the treatment and ideas and tastes hayve changed quite a bit even in that time. The colours used have succeeded in high1ighting some of the Victorian architectural features.。 Upon the opening of the hall in 1866 it was desc>ibed as a “handsome Vill1age Hal1 capable of seating 400 persons with reading and retiring Gne hundred and twenty two years later the many who use the hall for diverse occasions may not be as one in their approval of what the volunteer committee has achieved,along with the professional decorators,but the contrasting greens and 1ight relief of the main hall,the pale and blues of the committee room; the cleaning,painting and replacement of the kitchen (in2luding a new floor) and the striking red and Cream of the foyer do reflect great credit on the “trustees“ of the hall (who also do much physical work in this connection) .

It is hoped,funds permitting,to smarten up the entrance.。 The 1avatories,each side of the foyer,have also been redecorated,as wi11 =be the Cloakroom and storage areas..

During the renovation which was unavoidably extended,certain regular gatherings in the hall1 met conditions which the committee regretted.。 0ne written complaint has received an apology - which was extended to those who appreciated and overcame the difficulties and who,no doubt,wi11 relish the new-1ook hall。 It remains to urge users of the building and its facilities to bear in mind the many who contributed to the cost in lots of ways and those who have undertaken to keep it in sound and pleasant conditian for years to come,thus the motto: Leave it as you would hope to find it! To this end, Terms of Hire are to be compiled.

Treasurer Comdr Archie Pitman was thanked for the many years he has beel, booking officer ,a task now undertaken by Mr G Baker .

A most impressive and fascinating azray of unusual,bizarre and amusing domestic,household,farming , sporting and trade implements , gadgets and objets d「art from times gone by form an extensive and enviable collection of memorabilia and social history which has been painstakingly built up over many years by Norman Sturgess of Kibworth. Norman who is a builder was born in the village and has lived here most of his 1ife.

Glancing around , one can see a display of Insurance Company signis , a well-bucket and farming tools of all descriptions including a threshing drum jack. There is a massive slate cheese press and even a stagecoach jack! “In the kitchen there are porcelain dairy weights,a self-pouring teapot made in Sheffield in 1886,a cream separator and even a strange-looking Puzzle Jug 、 Naturally proud and fond of his many interesting treasures,Norman still1 keeps a keen eye open for anything with a distinctly local f1avour。 For instance,his collection of cast iron manhole covers is quite a sight!

Impressed on to these by the foundry were the names of former Kibworth builders such as H Bi1llings & Son, Garlick and Gamble,H H Garlick , G M Gamble,E Mason,W A Bolton and others. A chimney pot off a house in Great Glen is engraved with the name of Kibworth Potteries; a Kibworth Brick is said to have _CGKORGEF 工YNN, Crocers, Tea Dealers Proxitsion cuo 河 Wines. d Ales and “Stout 3Sceth 0 and-ae 一r per Botiie INE. A red fire bucket marked BR(M) came from the former Kibworth railway station; an enamelled sign advertisng “Gas for Motors“is reputed to have been on New Road at the former gasworks where cars which had been converted to run on gas in the war could fil1 up. Norman「s favourite piece is a delightful grandfather clock by Nathan Kirk of Kibworth .

There is even a 1ittle china cup with a picture of St Wilfrid「s Church on the side and a delightful print of the church dated 1791 which shows the elegant spire which once adorned it.

Leaflets, .photographs _and printed material trace all sorts of local activities and entertainment.、 There is a programme for the 1938 Grammar School production of Charlie「s Aunt , a copy of the Kibworth _News and Forces Journal “for our lads and 1assies serving in the forces including those from neighbouring parishes“ and perhaps one of the few surviving copies of the Kibworth and Smeeton Air Raid precautions.

Delving deeply into cardboard boxes and scanning nearby shelves,enough paraphernalia is revealed to keep one busy chatting to Norman for many hours.

They 1istened with rapt attention to Richard GCi11 who was speaking most fluently about the poetry of John Betjeman and Phillip Larkin.、 His excellent readings from Betjeman「s poems were very sympathetical ly received by all his 1isteners.

An evening starts off with floor exerCises to work on problem areas,hips , thighs,tummies etc.。 Then there are dance/exercise routines to music to | increase suppleness,grade and poise , and give a feeling of wel1 being.

0ver the l1ast few months the P.T.A。 at Kibworth High School1 has discussed ways of creating stronger 1inks between the School1 and the local business community. This reflects a national initkiative where in many. areas a partnership between industry and education has resulted in enhanced educational opportunities for our young people. In the interests of our pupils at K.H.5.、a similar scheme is beinq planned to involve our 1ocal community .

The High School offers a wide range of educational experience to all its pupils.。 The traditionally taught subjects are now timetabled alongside Computer Technology,Craft and Technical Design and Scientific inyestigation. As is often the case such advances mean that more sophisticated equipment and resources are necessary 。 Whilst it is not difficult to envisage the kind of resources that are required by the Science and Desiqn areas of the school1 the nseds of other departments are not so obyious、To take English as an example one of the main aims of the English Department is to encourage pupils to express their thoughts clearly and fluently .

Writers and poets occasionally visit the School to work with small groups of pupils. There is also a regular residential writing course which some of our pupils attend: The fact that resources are 1imited often restricts the numbers of pupils gaining from this type of experience .

It is therefore the main aim of the Business Link to increase the opportunities of pupils attending Kibworth

The benefit to business would be two fold.。 The schoo1 would publish the Sponsor Company 「s at every opportunity and arrange an 0pen Day when Sponsors could visit the area of the school with which they hac chosen to be 1inked. In the longer term many of our pupils wil11 become potential employees within the !ocal community . The advantage to business of well educated and motivated young people needs no amplification.

There have been many changes “during the 23 years that Albert Whitehouse has been caretaker at the School Road block of Kibworth High School and he has seen many hundreds of children pass through and on to wider horizons .

0ne of his delights is to be remembered by pupils after they have Left。 Albert and his wife moved from Birmingham 30 years ago and he started at the school seven years 1ater when Mr Hetherington was headmaster .

He has many memories of 1ife at the school; of extracting Philip Bromley 「 s daughter「s leg from a radiator; of demolishing a wooden desk to free a boy「s finger from the hole in the bottom; of carting the coke to the Turtle boilers with the help of pupil David Johnson who was always keen to miss 1essons to help Albert.

Albert does not enyy caretakers at big inner city schools with all their problems as he has always found that on the whole the children at Kibworth were well behaved and polite .

ALlbert will1 miss the staff,teachers and the pupils but wil1 not 1ose contact as his wife Marian wil1 sti1l1 be cooking lunches.

The first ground frost of the winter has paid us a visit,so it is now time to select the plants that you want to keep protected for planting out again in the spring of 1989.

You can carefully dig up the geraniums and half-hardy perennials , clean the soil from the roots,then give the stems a good pruning to about 3 or 4 inches above ground level.

Remove all diseased leaves and then either repot them into pots just 1arge enough to house the roots or place them together in a suitable container e.g9. 1large pot or tray,using a universal type potting compost.、 Keep the compost rather dry and place the plants in an unheated but frost-free greenhouse,Cconservatory or spare room. It is Very important not to over-water them and they do not need feed.、 During early spring,to promote regrowth,start to give them water,a Ilittle heat,and then move them to a wel1 1it area. They can be replanted out into the garden in the spring when danger of overnight frosts has passed.。ˇ The fuchsias,tuberous begonias , helichrysum and trailing verbenas , etc,can all be removed from the hanging baskets and over-wWintered using the above method,for replanting into your hanging baskets next year 。 If you have removed all the old bedding plants from the borders,etc. give the area a digging over and then , for winter colour,you can plant “Universal“pansies or winter flowering polyanthus .

It is a good idea to gather up all the autumn leaves and put them on the compost heap if you have one or dispose of them at your local tip. By keeping the garden free of leaves, it not only makes the garden look tidier,it also helps to reduce the slug population.

Double Thril for Ben 0n September 20th I went to Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre in Buckingham,for three days,to attend the 1988 “Cliff Richard Search for a Star“ final sift. The meeting took the form of a salad lunch provided by Miss Savage with wine and sherry supplied by Mrs Sturgess. It wil1 be one of the very happy memories which the CGroup wil1 have of Miss Savage as very sadly she died on September 25th. She wil1 be remembered for her courage,her joy of 1ife and her smiling face。 She wil1 be missed by her many friends.

Miss Savage had a very active summer with ths Croup,enjoying outings to Peakirk,Mount St Bernards Abbey,Beaumont Hall Cardens and Turners Musical Merry-Go-Round. She also spent four days on the“Peter Le Marchant Trust 「 boat which is specially equipped for handicapped people.

0f the many who attended a splendid musical evening at Church Langton「s St Peter「s on Wednesday ,September 28 , there were probably a number who gave thought to that famous previous rectoD the Rev Will1iam Hanbury,who in the 18th Century 1aid on a Handel Music Festival at the Church which caused the roads round about to be blocked with carriages and hostelries to be booked up far and wide .

Mr Andrew Greenhill,who has attained eminence in the Midlands,wrested the best from the church「s very good organ.

There were also choral contributions from the well1-known Leicester-based Jack Griffin Singers,24 men and women who for ten years have earned much gratitude and given much pleasure by their concerts for charity .

After the music there was supper in the Hanbury Institute.。 More than 8400 was raised for the funds of St Peter「s.

Mrs Stella Kitnmonth,of East Langton, arranged this memorable musical evening.

A Barn Dance on 22 0ctober at The Hanbury Institute,in aid of St。 Peter「s,will1 have 1ive music,bar and refreshments. It is being arranged by Mr and Mrs J E Chamberlain,their sixth such annual event - each Etime for a different worthy cause.。 Last year「s was for SARDA (Search and Rescue Dogs「,Association) and there is a most interesting story behind the reasons for supporting it.

In 1986 Mrs Chamberlain. was on holiday in Wales,and in company of a nephew and niece went up a mountain Lo view a cairn of particular interest when a mist descended and they were Lost.、。 They were on the mountainside all night,eventually something loomed out of the mist and a big dog sat down beside them,1looking very pleased with itself … it was a SARDA dog with luminous attachment.

This rescue was part of a full-scafe alert,。 No wonder the Chamber1l1ains decided that last year「s Barn Dance should be for SARDA!

Rita is from Kent and Frank from Budapest,they met in New Zealand then spent 20 years in Australia. They have both been in the food business for 18 years and have owned coffee shops,restaurants and a health food shop.

They are very interested in cooking,Rita specialising in baking so customers can look forward to some delicacies!

Music of a varied nature was performed and featured soloists included Darren _Harris(soprano cornet) , Peter Allen (cornet) ,David Bingham (flugel horn),David Jordan (euphoniom) and the trombones of Kate Brown, Andy Sharp and Derek Wadey .

Care Shangton,as that splendid community for the disabled near the vil1lage of Shangton now wisres to be known,held a Family Day in September to which relatives and friends were especially invited in order to view the Community during its day-to-day activities.

0ne of the four CARE cottages is being converted for. older residents (each of the four usually has 12) who may have more need of physical care. This is a big and expensive task for the Community and donations towards easing this would be tremendously appreciated.

Meantime Care Shangton is busy preparing for its annual Craft Fair , which is being held a 1ittle earlier this year for those looking for Christmas gifts.。 It is being held between 2 pm and 8 pm on Friday, November 4th,in the Sports Hall and the Community Hall. There wil1 be gifts galore including toys,rugs, plants,carpentry work,cakes and refreshment,not to mention Christmas Cards and similar seasonal items .

“ 0n Friday 23rd September a Harvest Festival Service was conducted by Miss Eileen Bromley,at the Kibworth Welcome Club. The Kibworth Methodist Chapel Ladies Choir attended accompanied by Mrs Snel1ling.、。 The solo | singer was Mrs Betty Byrne。 After the service the Harvest gifts ( were auctioned. SADDINGTON - Fayre The afternoon of Sunday,September 18th,was,weatherwise,one of challenge for those who 1ike to walk and your Village Correspondent,having missed 1ast year「s Saddington Michaelmas Fayre,decided,along with spouse , to shank「s pony it from Kibworth via Smeeton. Not all that far as miles go but that last stretch into Saddington,being 11%(as inclines have to be signposted nowadays) ,had been overlooked. But two things allowed 1legitimate pause: a 15-inch snake with dark markings seeking the coo1 of the _tarmac had been killed thereon (I ran over a python on Fraser「s Hi11 in Malaysia which in annoyance almost heaved us down a ravine - it too had been cooling itself) and nearby we caught sight of a footpath sign,but on that day,during which 20 rallying centres throughout Britain were proclaiming that “1ost“ footpaths must be restored,it was noted with grim amusement that this Saddington footpath was barred by many strands of barbed wire for some distance.

However,the footpath contradiction was soon forgotton as we entered Saddington and were conscious of the general air of goodwill1 as visitors and local people milled around the centre of the vi11age,where stalls were set out and a band (the Jarrett Ensemble,in uniform) played.。 This was how it used to be in many an English vil1lage in other days,except that today「s apparel is much 1ess formal and the contents of the various stalls differed greatly.

There were teas in the leafy churchyard,refreshment at the Queen「s Head (within and without) and games in the garden. Veteran Rolls-Royces were carrying young and old round the vil1lage,and everybody seemed to be enjoying ice-cream. The odd car churning its way through held bemused occupants,such was the effect of suddenly coming upon this envyiable brand of Saddington happiness.

As the church CLlock struck six, there was an appropriate evening service,with the Jarrett musicians rounding off a pleasant afternoon with a noteworthy ecclesiastical contribution within that handsome- building of such Long standing。 The fayre - the third such event added to church funds to the tune of around 81 , 500.。 It was organised

by Mrs Bery1 Deacon and a splendid team of helpers.

Is Foxton deceptively quiet? After all,it has a church,a public hal1, pubs,a P0/shop,and a canal “staircase“ which is a major tourist attraction,but just now there is very 1ittle disturbing the noiseless tenor of their waySs,to quote Thomas Gray. However no news is good news. But not to be overlooked was the harvest fsstival service at the Church on Sunday evening(0ctober 2) which,as usual,was wel11 attended.

The winter months can be unkind to us all but the very elderly suffer more than anyone. There are ways in which they can alleviate some of the discomforts and dangers for themselyes and there are ways in which the rest of the community can help.、 The main areas of concern are those of keeping warm and keeping wel1nourished.

Sometimes the difficulties in keeping warm are simply economical. For those on supplementary pensions or receiving housing benefit,extra financial help may be available and the DHSS should be approached、 If you are not entitled to a Heating Supplement , there are schemes available (e-.gsavings stamps) for making the payment of fuel bills a 1ittle easier.

It is dangerous to sleep in a bedroom where the temperature is 1ess than 500F.。 If your bedroom cannot be kept above this temperature,Consider moving your bed to the 1iving room during the winter months. To make the most of your heating,Ccheck through the following 1ist to see if there are any areas where improvements can be made.

During the month of 0ctober,the Kibworth Railway Action Group wil11 be conducting a survey in order to attempt a re-opening of a railway station in the vil11age.

The next step is for the survey to be forwarded to LANRAC,whose vicechairman,Mr John Pollock,of Desborough,is due to meet members of Leicester County Council transportation committee (and Northants CC) , said to be “rail-minded“,on Tuesday November 15.。 BR are also believed to be not against the scheme in principle.

Mr Waterfield stressed how grateful were the action group to those who were helping in such ways and to those who responded. As he put it,there「s no holding back now,the scheme is on the move and there was justified optimism _as to the outcome even though there is much to be done before the hoped-for Sprinter trains are actually running between Loughborough and Kettering via Kibworth,10 or 12 times a day ,each Way .

The previous survey stil1 had a 10% return in favour of a Kibworth station and it is felt that the percentage would have been higher but for the fact that it was conducted during Leicester “fortnight“.。 As it was, the return was considered to be “good“by_pollster experts.

It was pointed out that villages in the surrounding area would benefit and their co-operation was essential .

With mounting and wide ranging concern over road traffic and commuters 「 difficulties more rail facil1ities seemed to be the answer .

A card system could wel1 operate instead of the normal tickets (something similar to the phone card idea) and other aspects such as a Site for the station were being explored -.

Mr Waterfield said surrounding vil11ages,our MPs and MEPs had indicated support for their efforts and,it was understood,so had Harborough Chamber of Trade.

The next meeting of the action group depends on the outcome of discussions with the county council,or the period of consideration that may elapse.The public wil1 be notified.

A DREAM COME TRUE.J! A dream came true for me the .day I won a sudden-death playoff in“ the Esso/Daily Express National Boys Golf Championship regional final at Telford Golf Club in June. It meant that I had won a trip _to La Manga in Southern Spain to play in the National Final. It was my third time in the regional heats and I had finished third and second and at last af『irst!7 flew from Gatwick with the rest of the party on September 10th. 【 We were twelve boys and , also about eight officials from the Express and Essos I had never flown before and the sensations of taking off and landing are ones I will never forget。 The complex itself was truly magnificent and everywhere we went everyone was so friendly .

The Championship was over fifty-four holes and was won_by a scratch handicap player named Steven Pullan.A future 0pen Champion maybe. His final aggregate .of two hundred and seventeen was. only one over par for “the tough Championship .South Course which put him five shots ahead of his nearest My score totalled , two hundred and twenty nine which put me in joint fourth position. I wil1 never forget that feeling for as Long as I 1ive、 The whole week long trip was an education in more ways than one and it is one whose memaries I wi11 cherish for a long time to come、 I am in debt to the people from Esso and the Daily Express who looked after me that week and who gave me the opportunity to not only fulfil s dream and ambition of mine but also to tntroduce me to a different country and culture.
