0n September 26 Kibworth was for the first time the location for the Leicestershire Ploughing Match. Five of Brian Briggs! fields off Fleckney Road were covered with Competitor3 , exhibitors and spectators on a clear dry day .

Anclent~ Ann Tomlin of Hinckley,aged just 21,won the Horse Ploughing Class. Her pair of horses,, Bonnie and Clyde,were broken in on1ly six months ago and were led by her retired farmer father,HarIyY . and Modern 0ur other picture shows George Jordan of School1 Walk, Kibworth,using a huge International 145 hp tractor drawing a 5 furFow, reversible,vari-width plough. He gained Second Prize in his Class、 0verall Champion was John Holman of Burton 0very.

Jackie「s 「Scootar Jackie Towe was diagnosed to be suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of five. The family moved to Kibworth and Jackie attended the Primary School. It was not an easy time for her with her disabilities , but by the time she went on to the High School she felt much happier , having built-up her own circle of friends before she went to Robert Smyth Schoo1l.

Jackie has a Bec Scoota. She had tried a Mini especially adapted for her but found the steering difficult。 She has a wheelchair but dis1ikes using it and only does so when Christmas shopping in Leicester.。 Whenever she was out in the wheelchair peop1e tended to ignore her and speak direct1ly to her father about how Jackie felt.。 However she still1 uses the chair when they go to Spain to the apartment they have there.

When asked about diets Jackie said she had tried some,disliked them and would rather have the arthritis and eat what she 1iked,especially as her doctors were not convinced that such diets would help,in her case.

Jackie works now at Mulhearn「s in Leicestery, typing on an electric machine using her finger joints,not the end of her fingers、。 Her father (who also works for the company) takes her

Ceorge Holton,who 1ives With his wife in Smeeton Westerby,wWas also imprisoned in his home until three years ago when they managed to purchase an electric chair.。 This has given him back some small but priceless measure of the freedom he once had,to go beyond the four walls of the cottage.

The chair,which according Eto the Birmingham-based manufacturers has a maximum range of twelve miles, before its two twelve-volt batteries need to be recharged from the domestic electricity supply,has been a godsend .

He can carry shopping in the basket attached to the chair and in Which he also keeps handy a raincoat for the odd day when a shower has been Known to develop unexpectedly Having lived a 1ifetime in Ethe vi1l1age,both Mr.、 and Mrs. Holton have seen the enormous changes that have taken place in the area,not all of which - and we spoke at the time of a particular housing development in Kibworth which shall remain nameless do they see necessarily as having been for the better、 Howewver HMr .

Holton is grateful for being able to see what is new for himself,and can often be found at his spot , the Coronation Seat in Kibworth, where he watches the world go by and talks over old times with friends and passers-by.

Let us hope this autumn may be notable for some mild dry weather so these three stalwWarts 《and others not mentioned) can keep their vehic1les charged up,and ready for the much appreciated trips out.

A Seatof Dispute Last month「s edition of the Chronicle recorded the decision of Kibworth Beauchamp Parish Council to temporarily remove the seat at the corner of Rosebery Avenue and Fleckney Road. This step was taken after the Council received a detailed complaint of the noise,nuisance and damage caused by some of the young people who use the bench as a meeting place and ad hoc social centre!

While one cannot “but sympathize with the residents of Rosebery Avenue whose children are disturbed by the noise of motorcycles and bad 1anguage the seat「s removal was not without opposition. A petition for its 「 return gathered some 270 signatures.

The petitioners argued that the bench had been a 1ocal amenity for . many years and that it should be the troublemakers who are brought to book rather than the seat be removed.

Church Hall Progress we are pleased to report that work on the ,New Hall is progressing wel1 , the main foundations already being complete.、When the top soil was removed and the foundations dug some human remains were uncoyered . They were of Cconsiderable age and rather scattered,natural earth movement having displaced them from their original resting place.。 We can assure readers that any remains so far discovered have already been reverently reinterred by the Rector at the back of the churchyard: As the main movement of earth is. now complete,it is hoped that 1ittle more ground disturbance wil11 be necessary , but should further remains come to 1ight they wil11 be dealt with in the same sensitive manner .

W15TOW Wistow has three main attractions : Itts ancient church of the Hall which has itts origins in the Middle Ages and a modern Garden Centre. The name of the vil11age is derived from Wistanstowe (the holy place of Wistan) and the church was built on the site of the murder of Prince of Mercia,by his Uncle,Brifardus.

Today「s church,which is beautifully maintained,has a 13th century tower and much of its fabric is Norman.

The incumbents of the Hall today ars Mr. Timothy and the Hon、Mrs。 Ann Brooks;, the property having been passed to Mrs、Brooks by her father , the fourth Lord Cottesloe.。 The Hal1 was owned by the Halford family from 1603 until 1896,when the 1ast Halford died,and the estate then passed to the third Lord Cottesloe.

The 1last of the Halfords was engaged , with Lord Cottesloe,in experimental work in the development of the rif1e and he installed a range at Wistow the iron target can still be seen in the grounds of the In the 1st World War, Wistow Hall was a hospital for. wounded soldiers. In World War II it became a haven for babies whose homes had been bombed and,1ater on, it became the refuge of a number of ex-patriate Lutheran priests.。 After the war,until 1958,it was the International Christian Centre for Friendship and Service. An Interesting incident in the history of Wistow Hall took place on the 4th June,1645,when Charles I and Prince Rupert fled from the battle of Naseby and,taking fresh horses at Wistow for their gallop to Leicester,1left behind their conspicuous saddles of crimson velvet and gold braid.

Wistow「s Garden Centre caters for far more than the horticulturist , having a popular tea-shop,an Aquatic Centre,the Butterfly Shop and the Arts & Crafts shop of David Smithurst,a Fleckney man. The Centre is managed very capably by Mrs. Sheila Simpson and continues to expand its amenities..

SADDINGTON Saddington is referred to in the Domesday Book as Setintone and its church of St、、Helen has a 13th Century south arcade,although it was virtually rebuilt in 1872/3.

The village has a number of attractive early 19th Century houses and is set on a hill1-top in good walking country. There is coarse fishing on Saddington reservoir,the water from which tops up the Grand Union Canal.

By the bridge on Smeeton Road one can 七 unnel . see the entrance to the 2-mile 8 The Chronicle representative at Saddington,Mrs.、Bery1 Deacon,has been the postmistress at Saddington for 21 years and her mother-in-1aw held the position before Her husband,Michael,is a postman at Kibworth.。 Bery1 and Michae1 1ive in one half of the 01d Vicarage and Michael「s brother,Christopher and his wife Lilian,1ive in the other half.。 The brothers have 1ived in the 01d Vicarage for 50 years,although for half of that time Christopher was in the army. Christopher Deacon has been Chairman of the Saddington Parish Meeting for 6 years and Lilian is secretary of the PCC and President of the 人工 .

Having no village hall,the residents of Saddington successfully approached the church authorities and themselves partitioned the church so that they now have a meeting place for secular activities such as the W.I。 The partitioned area has been particularly useful in catering for the increasing number of visitors who have come to Saddington during the past 5 years to enjoy Sunday afternoon teas. This season f700 has been raised for church funds and this is the achievement of about a dozen regular helpers,with others giving a hand when required。 Church Warden, Miss Sheila Allsop,presided over the last tea of the season at the end of Sept. Virtually all the residents take part in village activities which

include church bell ringing,a team of handbell ringers and an annual Michaelmas Fayre of surprising diversity.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith have 1ived at Saddington Hall for 30 years and have for many years operated a small but high class hosiery business from their main barn. At the 01d Schoolhouse,Mr.Raymond Grant _pursues his hobby of collecting old photographs and copies of documents relating to the school ,which closed down in 1976. Children now go to school in Fleckney. There is no shop in Saddington but the popular pub,The Queen「s Head is run by_Mr. and Mrs. George Buller .

Sunday 20 September Was the occasion of the Saddington Michaelmas Fayre , which raised f1,800 for church funds.

There were more than a score of stalls and much originality.、。 The Queen「s Head went Continental ,with appropriate pavement tables.、 In the pub「s garden were village stocks and many sideshows. The final of a table skittles knockout was won by a team from the Crown at Fleckney .

Rides in vintage cars Were particularly enjoyable and an exhibition of wooden bowls made by local “sculptor“ Mr,A.Pountney were also quite a draw.。 Homemade baking and refreshment were available in the church meeting room all day .

GUMLEY Gumley W.I. members are fee1ling very pleased with themselves. Their annual Flower Show (it includes vegetables and products) in September attracted 200 exhibits to the vi11age hall,and viewers and customers from “all over“ It has put the 25 or so members, some of whom are from neighbouring villagesy, in particularly good heart as they now get down to planning a bigq event next year to mark their 70th anniversity. This should be in January but may be deferred to await kinder weather,according to show secretary Mrs Edna Girvan; she has been treasurer for seven of her ten years「 membership。 Mrs Girvan「s brother,Geoff Davis, runs the unique vil1lage museum depicting a busy country butcher operating at the end of the 1ast century、 0pen to the public in 1975 after many requests the museum runs from Apri1 to 0ctober on Sundays 11:15-1700 hrs.

During the ensuing years donations have been forwarded to the Children「s Renal Unit at Leicester General Hospital .

SLAWSTON For 68 years the vil1lagers of S1lawston made do with a World 0ne exArmy “hut“for all their under-cover events. Recently it was demolished being no longer safe.。 Slawsons, known for its,togetherness; sought out the source of a Feplacement.。 They have been offered a prefab building by a commercial concern.、 The replacement suits their needs at a price which they believe they can cope with 。 The old site is being used again and the pouring of the foundation concrete was carried out on Thursday , 0ctober 8th. Where would you find on a cold 0ctober evening,a warm welcome,hot coffee and home-made biscuits? I11Lston Village Hall had all this on 8th 0ctober when I1lston on the Hil1 W.I.、was host to Professor Rainer Goldsmith. Though his talk was of a chilly nature, his enthusiasm for his subject made everyone glow.

Professor Goldsmith「s talk,i1lustrated by slides,covered his three expeditions to the Antartic. The first one from 1955-57 was with Sir Vivien Fuchs as Medical 0fficer,the second one(1959-60) 「Deep Freeze Five“project was called Snuffles because its object was investigating the cause of the common cold. His third foray was 1980-81.He was one of the original organisers of the International BioMedical Expedition which had the project primarily and uniquely to investigate the responses of man in an unusual environment to cold,hard work and isolation. This was the scene of the Horizon programme called 「Bitter Cold「 screened eighteen months ago.

This entertaining evening was the culmination of a year of varied activities of the W.I. under the energetic presidency of Mrs Pat Rees of Gaulby. The W.I. movement is no longer“,Jam and Jerusalem“ and is offering programmes of interest to younger members.、。 New faces are always made very Welcome .

District Commissioner Hazel Baxter thanked them for all the time and effort they have contributed over the years. The Brownies provided entertainment with a pl1ay and Ssongs。 In response to an appeal published earlier this year in the Kibworth Chronicle for new Brownie Leaders,Mrs Catherine Hil1 and Miss Sarah Lidbetter have come forward to join Ruth Pearce in running the Pack.

10 Rose Bowl Competition For the Second time in recent years the _Kibworth and Smeeton entry came second in the Fernie Rose Bowl1 Competition. They lost to 0adby Brookside W.I。. by half a point at this year「s event held in Kibworth Vi11age Hall on 0ctober 3rd.、。 In 1985 they also lost by half a point but that year they were runners-up to Gumley.

The competition was started in 1965 when Kibworth and Smeeton W.I. presented a silver rose bow1 to the Fernie Group which consists of the following institutes beside their own:- Fleckney,Foxton,Great Glen , Gumley,Kilby,Lubenham,Mows1ey , Newton Harcourt,0adby,0adby Brookside and Saddington. The idea behind it was to promote the varied skills of all W.I. members in friend1y competition and it is this friend1y spirit which has always made it such an enjoyable occasion.

Kibworth “A“have made what can only be described as a disastrous start to the hockey season.。 Played 3 lost 3 is not what they hoped for in spite of the fact that 2 of the teams played - Charles Keene College and English Electrics ,A「-finished 1st and 2nd in the league 1ast season。 However,starting bottom of the 1eague may have its compensationshopefully they can make a rapid rise up the table in the next few weeks!

0n Saturday 18th September 1897 the first official club run of the Leicestershire D.A,of the Cyclists「 Touring Club took place. 90 years 1ater some 80 local cyclists joined up at Victoria Park in Leicester to celebrate that historic ride by fol1owing the original route on Sunday 20th September 1987.

Croups of a dozen riders set off , with C.T.C.National President,Mrs Ivy Taylor of Exeter riding with Leicestershire President,Morgan Reynolds of Hinckley in the 1eading group. Kibworth cyc1ists Peter and Barbara Witting rode tandem , 吴 th Tony Mellor a solo.。 Coffee was taken at Wistow before moving on to the Bath Hotel at Shearsby for 1unch,, where tea was taken on the ride 90 years before.

The riders returned via Kibworth to finish their ride at Knighton,where commemorative certificates were presented to all successful riders.。 01dest rider was 82 year old Percy Frank1in,born when the Leicestershire C.T.C.was only 8 years old.。 A pretty good indication of the benefit of regular exercise by cyc1ingl!

Kibworth Town Town have made a solid start to the season with success in both cup and league matches, In the league cup they beat Fisher Sporting 6-2 and followed up with a league win against Spitfires by 7-0.、。 After a 3-1 setback against Glenhills in the league there was an exciting County Cup draw against Beaches (3-3) The replay was held last Saturday - see stop press for This year Leicester Fencing are sponsoring the club。

Cricket Kibworth Cricket Club「s friendly games in September were badLly hit by the weather. The sun shone,howeveT , for the inter-club game which this year was between members 1iving in the village and those 1iving outside.

The game also marked the retirement of Ron Beet who has given many years“ service as a player but also on the ground,equipment and many other offices within the cLlub. A hard fought game was won by the vi1l1agers with Ron taking the 1ast wicket in the final over .

An enjoyable evening followed the game with one or two pleasant surprises for Ron. Also on the day John Ward was presented with the H.A.Roach Trophy for the Junior Cricketer of the year 。
