0n Thursday 9 0ctober the reigning Miss World,Hofi Karlsdottir,from Iceland,spent part of the afternoon visiting CARE vil1lage at Shangton.

2 Miss World had spent the day in Market Harborough seeing how the swimsuits for the world「s most glamorous beauty competition are prepared at Symington「s. This is the third year they have been made locally 万 After Lunch she examined Local exhibits at the Harborough Museum before her short stop in CARE Village where Miss World talked to residents and inspected the workshops .

Fifteen year old Jamie Anderson has achieved great success this year,His first major title this year Came 1ate in July when he won the Leicestershire County Junior Stroke-play championship . He followed this up by narrowly 1losing the match play championship connected to the same event。 He completed his year of tournament success by capturing the Kibworth Club championship when he shot two steady rounds _of 74-75 in testing conditions. He also won the match play title by beating David Allen in an exciting final. He is only the third person to achieve the double in the competions「“ history; to round off the exciting and successful season for the school1-boy he was asked to become the County Junior Captain for the forthcoming season.

Police Week at Kibworth Primary School 0n_Monday we saw the history of police and we saw clips of Char1lies with 1anterns. .Robert Pee1 made a police force with blue tall hats and blue coats and trousers and black boots.

0n Tuesday we had PC Sherwood come to see us and he told us about railway 1ines and never play there and he showed us a video of accidents that can happen.

0n Wednesday the _policelady came and she told us about her work.Then in the afternoon we had a police car come and I sat in the car .

0n Thursday a police bike came and he put on the sirens. Later on in the morning we had the frogman “_and I wore a 1ife jacket and he blew it up.

0ver the summer holidays I went for some tennis coaching at Evington Park、 I was picked to go to Loughborough where there were 16 boys from Nottingham,Derby and Leicester; out of those 16 boys I was chosen to go and stay at Bisham Abbey for 3 days and meet CLiff Richard. I went on Monday 22 September ˇ_with the regional Kibworih Toddlers coach and arrived at 12.30,with 20 other boys。 We Looked around the grounds、 During the 3 days I played start tennis , middle tennis and tennis. I did some dance routines and played netball , basket ball and football1. I was really tired out。 I met C1Liff Richard on Monday and also on Wednesday . He-sponsored the _organisation and gave out the prizes。 The 1ast day arrived,and as I got ready to go I was given stickers , balls;,t-shirts, bags,towel1,sweatshirts and sweat bands .

Altogether, I had a really great time.

As always, the group plan a busy programme of activities over the next 1few months. Special events to note |in the diary are 27 0ctober - Disecoyery Toys 10 November - Rhyme 双 Reason Books 5 December - Christmas Party .

Kibworth Toddlers meet on Monday 2-4pm in the Millage Hall Weekly entry s 40p- which includes refreshments. The group extend a warm welcome to any Mums With young children who would like to come along and join in their activities .

From Small Beginnings 。

Presentations were the order of the day at the celebrations to mark the 10th Birthday of the 2nd Kibworth Guide Company in “September .

Mrs Jean Coleman,retiring District Commissioner,presented the first Baden Powel1 Trefoil award in the Kibworth area to 13 year 0ld “Kate Mi11s, who had provided a display of some of her work for this new award.。Mrs.。 Coleman was then surprised by Mrs。 Vivien Kennedy who presented her with two stone patio wheelbarrows and a tree. In making the presentation, Mrs.Kennedy thanked Mrs.Coleman for her loyal service to the Guide movement over the past 11 years. Mr .5id Coleman was also thanked for his support and was presented with a Thanks Badge Paperweight.

The final presentation of the evening was to Mrs.Hazel Baxter who has been in charge of the Company for all of its 10 years.Kibworth Ranger,Clare Townsend gave Mrs.Baxter a decanter and glasses and other gifts from past and present guides in recognition of her devoted service.

The friends and supporters of the Company also enjoyed a film of the Charnwood 185 International Camp and a buffet supper.

In 1976 the Kibworth 、Guides had a problem.The existing company had the maximum 36 guides but there were more 10 year olds from the 2 Brownie Packs waiting to join.This was when Mrs. Hazel Baxter of Marsh Drive agreed to start a new company.、The 2nd Kibworth.

She started with a nucleus of 12 girls and 2 helpers , Mrs.Molly Lidbetter and Mrs.Ann Spickne11,Since then the Company has grown,both in size and in the scale of its activities. The many past and present guides wil1 confirm that Mrs:Baxter「s hard work has helped to make Thursday evenings enjoyable as well1 as instructive with badge work and community service being shared with parties and trips.

In addition,there are two Company Camps which Mrs.Baxter has made a regular feature. It is surely a feat of ingenuity to organise 10-14 year old girls so that they are not hungry「, bored,wet,cold or homesick in a typical British summer weekend. In spite of thunderstorms and 6“ mud , few girls come home early.

Mrs.Baxter is leaving the Company to take over as District Commissioner for the Kibworth district,so she wi11 still1 be involved in the Guiding movement.。 She leaves a thriving group in the capable hands of Mrs.Kate Roberts and is confident that the company wil1 continue to build on the successes of the 1ast 10 years。

0n 22 September,Fiona Baxter was presented with the highest award in Guiding - ,The Queenv「s Guide「 ,by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant in the County Rooms, 三eicester。 Among her many tasks,Fiona acted as Server in Kibworth Church,helped with a Ranger Camp,wove a tapestry,1earned about Sri Lanka and held a coffee morning raising funds for a charity there,investigated housing in Kibworth and completed a 53 mile walk in the New Forest. This walk,her favourite activity,done with three other Rangers , took four days and was exhausting.The whole task took 16 months to complete

County Event 0n_Monday 29 September a most enjoyable evening was spent at The Council Chamber,County Hall.

Two guides from 2nd Kibworth daughters joined a Brownie Pack and - Helen Cullum and Kate Mills Jean was asked to help.、In 1968 she receivyed their awards. The parents became Brown 0wl until 1976 when she of the guides,also Mrs Baxter and became District Commissioner for the Mrs Roberts,accompanied the guides.

Kibworth Bowls Club About 140 members and their guests enjoyed the pleasant and friendly atmosphere of the Kibworth Bow1s Clubhouse on Thursday 25 September , when the Kibworth and Smeeton _Cardening Club and the Bowls Club joined forces to host a recording of Radio Leicester「s popular Down to Earth ,programme.

The questions handed in on the night were many and various、、As many as possible were handled in the half- hour recording,the remainder being dealt 十 ith after a short break、Thereafter , 1 further questions were invited from anyone in the audience which kept the panel fully occupied.

6 NMarsh Drive KibwGrth: Brownie Revels.1986 0n Saturday 20 September .1st & 2nd Kibworth Brownies travyelled to Fleckney Brownie Headquarters for Brownie Revels.、The theme was Nursery Rhyme characters and everyoney including all the Guiders,went in fancy dress. It was a lovely sunny day so we all1 gathered on the grass in a field behind the church. All the Brownies got to know each other with a song called “Good Evening Friend Brownie“,when we all had to shake hands.Each Pack organised outdoor games to play until we ate our picnic tea.Mrs.Coleman told us she was retiring as District Commissioner and we all met our new D.C。Mrs.Baxter 。 After everyone “_had joined in singing lots of songs,the coach arrived to take us back to Kibworth.

Illston Field underThreat Villagers in I11ston crowded into the vil1lage hall on Tuesday to protest about the proposed housing development on land adjacent to the picturesque village “church.

The _proposed plans showed building right up to the south side of the churchyard wal1 , and if approved would completely change the appearance of the vi11age, and obstruct the View of the church from much of the VYillage.Vil11agers complained that the village,which is designated a conseryation area,would be converted into a ribbon development reminiscent of the 1930「 s, with no view of the surrounding countryside from the vil1lage street.

0bjections were also raised on the grounds of access for cars,already difficult in the narrow vil1l1age street loss of trees and hedgerow,and also a further reduction in the already inadequate water pressure in the village. What I 1ike most about 1iving in Lakeville is the outdoor 1ife. In the Autumn,when the lovely colour-changirg leaves attract so many yisitors,the hunting season begins and the local people get shooting permits to help keep the numbers of deer under control.

I have been out with my husband and his friends a couple of times.。 When the 1akes freeze over we start playing icehockey - I usually play in goal as I have not perfected my skating.。 By December there is usually enough snow to go ski-ing but I haven「t tried that yet.。 A fun way to travel then is by snowmobile、 In summer there is even more to do。 My favourite occupation is going to the 1ake where there is a beach and we sunbathe,swim,Ccanoe,sail and windsurf.。 I have also water-skied on a larger 1ake nearby. People hike,Campy follow the many mountain trails and John and I run over 3 miles three or four times a week. There are also mary golf courses,tennis courts and a motr racing track at Line Rock where Paul Newman participates every year.。 Evening barbecues are a big favourite 1ly because the summer weather is so very hot - the only factor I don「t 1ile is the humidity when the water rol1s off you just sitting stil1.、 Last year I experienced a hurricane and an ear1y morning earthquake but neither was too severe.

Last May John and I were married and as my parents were in England I had to arrange it all.

Prior to applying for a marriage 1icence the bride and groom must have blood tests. The night before,there is a wedding rehearsal,foLlowed by a special dinner held by the groom「s parents in a restaurant、 In the evening the bridesmaids walk down the aisle in a single file ahead of the bride,and the ushers take part in the ceremony by standing at the altar with bride,groom and bridesmaids. At the reception they have a ritual of tappirg the champagne glasses with a spoon until the bride and groom kiss.。 When the cake is cut,the bride and groom feed each othsr with it--- this can be awWfully messy,as I found out!

The bride「“s bouquet is thrown over her shoulder to be caught by a sing1le girl,and the groom removes the bride「 s garter and throws it to the single men gathered together.。 Then the lucky man proceeds to put the garter on the 1eg of the 1ucky gir1l.

Since our wedding we have moved to - Manchester,Connecticut,and it is different again. I always think of Kibworth and the things I miss,especially my family and the 1ittle things 1ike fish and chips,Sunday dinners,1lookirg up at the windmill1 from my bedroom, and just being able to walk around the vil1lage. I hope it be long before I can visit again and show John around Kibworth,tnes yiliage I grew up n

Following possibly a “once in a 1ifetime trip“on the QE2,Richard returned home “to Kibworth Harcourt wWith many mementos and memories of an eight day Iberian cruise with his parents Sue and John Forde.

11 PLANNING APPLICATIONS Objecitors

The l1ast issue of the Chronicle referred to the Consistory Court as the non-event of the year Readers may be interested to learn why the Court never took place. There have been - and still are - hundreds of people in Kibworth who object to the building of a hall in “St.Wilfrid「 s However,the number of objectors has been whittled away by the constant need to write letterS re-stating their objections. 0n each occasion a few less people have written,some have been ruled out of time and some have simply heard no more .

MAY 1984 The Planning Application is fixed to the church is normal courtesy for neighbours to be consulted before planning applications.、We haye not been consulted.

The application talks of a meeting room as an extension to the church。 This sounds small and inconspicuous3 the plans reveal a substantial church hall. We object,pointing out that there are plenty of halls in Kibworth , that the building is too 1arge,graves wil1 be disturbed,and,above all , according to the draft Local Plan after an extensive public enquiry, St.Wilfrid「s Churchyard is an important open space not to be developed. HDC「s Planning Committee dismiss this l1ast point as unimportant so much for democracy! The plan is, however,deferred for reasons of site , design and use。 JUNE 1984 Many residents of Kibworth sign a letter to HDC objecting to the plan . Letters are delivered by hand on _Sunday in time for the meeting of the_ Planning Committee on Tuesday .

They are not “presented at the meeting. We object again、 The plan is deferred because adequate changes have not been made.

FEBRUARY 1985 The Church re-submits the plan. Largely cosmetic changes but “the 1ink between the church and the hall has now gone. So it an extension after al1l.We object pointing- out that planning permission was sought for a room as an extension to the church,not a separate hall.

HDC 1ater dismisses this point.

MARCH 1985 Just before the Planning Meeting,it comes to 1ight that the church wants to add eight feet to the building - as if it「s not big enough already. A letter from the architect states that the “room is intended for a small gathering of children and adults in intimate,informal meetings!

A fire safety officer from Leicester Fire that the proposed building can accommodate 180 people!

Even Sir John Farr in a letter to us considers the scheme over ambitious We At an “open“ meeting of Kibworth Parish Counci,the Counci1 unamimously endorses the plan. After the vote has been taken,the objectors are allowed to speak.So much for democracy.HDC defers the new plan.

APRIL 1985 HDC finally approves the plan。 SEPTEMBER 1985 A small public announcement appears in the Mercury. The church needs a “Faculty“to be allowed to dig up graves to build the hall1. We object Hundreds of people write in protest.

JANUARY 1986 The Diocesan Registrara solicitor- asks for detailed written objections within 14 days. A Consistory Court is decreed for March.

0n enquiry, it appears that the Chancellor of the church wil1 be the judge at this court,We wrcte in detail 」 FEBRUARY 1986 The Rector and Churchwardens reply to the objectors.The Rector asks for the Court to be post,poned。 We- must reply in 14 days. We do so and also ask for a 1ist of objectors and are refused.

JULY 16th.1986 A letter from the Registrar asks why we haven「t objected to a fresh citation published on the church door between June 28 and July 8 The Consistory Court wil1 be held on 0ctober 4.、and by the way the losing parties are 1iable for costs. An objector telephones the Diocesan Registrar pointing out that many of the objectors are pensioners. Is a representative “of the church going to be standing outside the Post 0ffice on _pension day to collect these costs? The registrar replies “There are ways of collecting money 。 JULY 29th.We return from holiday to find the letter of the We have tyo days left to reply.、We write that it is odd that the citation should be published on the door farthest from the road and at peak holiday times and what「s this about costs? The Registrar replies that costs could be in the region of 500 to f1000. Do we stil1 wish to object?2 AUGUST 1986 We take legal advyice and _reluctantly write to the Registrar: “It wil11 have come as no surprise to you that public oppositton can appear to be rapidly eroded by delays,deadlines,and difficulties in understanding unknown 1egal procedures. The Church,we understand , interprets this naively as the evaporation of opposition. . . This cannot be further from the truth.。 0pposition is still very much alive and the fact that people cannot continue to compete in a game the rules of which they do not know does not reduce their moral outrage. “We remain puzzled that in a democratic aqge,the “_church has been completely unable to communicate with its own community and has ultimately invoked the spectre of punitive financial penalties.We regret that we are financially unable to pursue this matter . . .

Many of the club「s junior players have had the opportunity to perform in these games and it is hoped that they will1 be part of the league sides next Season。 The club is hoping to run regular social functions during the winter and new social members are Welcome tO join the club.

Cross Country Jumping Angela Jackson aged 16 of 0wthorpe House Farm,Sl1awston,has qualified for the national championships of the B.A.Hunter Trials. She took part in one of 11 qualifying events around the country - hers was at Garthorpe Race Course,Melton,- and out of over 60 local competitors she was one of only 11 to go through to the finals at Chessington,Surrey .
