SHOW ATHLETIC Members of the Centre raised approx 8300 by their efforts for twelve hours on Sunday 16th April for the Special 01ympics to be held in Leicester in August.。 This is in addition to the f160.00,raised at a disco in March。 The activites were: football,hockey, badminton,volleyball,poo1l, table-tennis,netball,darts,board games,computer games,tug-o-war and Founders. Durinq the day,heavy metal band “Destroyer“ , which has two members from Kibworth,played and eventually put on a performance towards the end of the twelve hours 。 The Bump Starts Scooter Club provided rides to raise money from unsuspectinq participants (1) durindq the afternoon,and we also had a 1onq visit from Terry Harrison,the Special 01ympics Games Director ,who made a special point of talkinq to

as many of the participants as possible before leavinq.

We called at a house in Kibworth Harcourt and were greeted by Marjorie Bell. Marjorie is a well-known Kibworth person,having 1ived in the same house in the yillage for the past 47 years.、。 We were ushered into her lounge where we saw her beautiful Amary11is-Nirierva, a deep salmon colour 1ily. Through tender care and attention Marjorie was now reaping the rewards of no less than eight flower heads. This Christmas present of one bulb is certainly a Marjorie has been a widow for twelve years and because her husband was a multiple scLlerosis sufferer,she has devoted those years to raising money for the Market Harborough Branch of M.5. Society. Her talent for pro. ducing handicrafts such as sewing bags,pot pourri crafts and knitted toys including gnomes,mermaids and .mice has meant that many ,many pounds have been donated to this charity .

Marjorie sells the majority of her work from home to friends and relations 、 Marjorie has two . Jane married and living in South Africa and Howard married and 1iving in Inverness。 ..cnd 3 more fofojs 修 At the「“Spot,fashion show held on 19th April in aid of Cancer Research, a grand total of f245 was raised. 禽 The R.N.L.I. collection for this year_produced a record total of 8615.

Sad Farewell to the Cubs GLORIA GILSON

Dolls for Delectation Maggie Starbuck of Meadowbrook Road first became interested in antique dolls when she was on holiday. in Australia and purchased her first two dolls. She was then fascinated by others she saw at an Antique Craft Sale at Kibworth Village Hall a couple of years ago. The 1ady who was then selling the dolls also ran a c1lass to teach her students how to make the porcelain heads,1imbs,etc. and then make up the dolls. Maggie attended her class and became proficient in the very delicate and intricate processes involved in making the porcelain parts. These have to be made in moulds,after which they are fired in a kiln. The features are then painted on by hand - one eye lash at a time - and the heads , are fired for the second time.

Maggie dresses her dolls in the most exquisite clothes made from 1Victorian「 patterns and using,mostly , 01d 1ace and fabric from old dresses, to give them that “antique「 Look. Some of the dolls have bodies made of porcelain throughout,some are made with bodies of a wooden composition material and others have soft bodies。 They range in size from 7“ to 277 and can be made to order.。 As Maggie emphasises,these dolls are not playthings but are collectors「“ items .

The Kibworth Cubs have benefited for 25 years from the expertise , commitment “and devotion of Gloria Gilson who 1ast month retired from being Akela of the pack。 Gloria has been inyolved in scouting for 35 years.。 She was assistant cub leader of 24 Leicester Phil1ips for 10 years,then in 1963 came to Kibworth as Akela.。 In 1971 she received the Medal of Merit as recognition of outstanding services and then in 1984 for special Distinguished Services received the Silver Acorn and was inyited to the St。 Ceorges Day Service at Windsor.。 A once in a 1ifetime experience!

Gloria has found scouting very rewarding and especially being with the same pack for so long she has been able to see the second generation of boys come to join. Gloria feels that though Scouting has changed with society the values have remained the same and boys can benefit enormously from their time with the SCouts。 Gloria is leaving because her husband has taken early retirement and they want to spend more time together .

A surprise party was arranged for her 1ast meeting When the boys presented a bouquet and a Lilliput House and another surprise awaited Gloria at the A.G.M. at Scout Headquarters when many people who had been connected with her time with the Scouting movement were present and after a cheese and wine buffet presented her with two Li11iput CottageS。

Past and present members of 1st Kibworth Scouts are indebted to Ji11 Harris for her dedication and commitment to them during the 1ast 15 and a half years.。 Last month Ji11 retired as assistant cub leader。 Jil1 with no experience of scoutinq or guidingq,naturally decided to help the cubs (at a time when more help was needed) because her eldest son was already. a member other two sons followed in their brothersy footsteps all benefiting from beind in the scoutinq movement。 A farewel1 and surprise party was arranged for Ji11 and the boys presented her with a china trinket box.

Jill1 also attended the 1st Kibworth Scout Group「s annual meeting and committee members presented her. with an antique “fairing. of _which she is an avid collector! 。

“The car parking problem in Kibworth is one of severe congestion at peak periods - particularly Thursday and Friday mornings and afternoons,and Saturday mornings.“ Sounds 1ike an up-to-the minute commentary on the parking situation in Kibworth,1989 - doesn「t it? But the above words were

by Colin Thompson,representing the Kibworth Harcourt Conservation Society,in a presentation made to the District Council 5 years ago in 1984! “In fact, of course,the whole subject has exercised the minds of members of the community and of the various interested local authority bodies for many years - as long ago as 1972 a local newspaper reported that the then Market Harborough Rural Council1 had reviewed the needs for parking faci1ities in the vil1lage and estimated that 50 “off street“ parking spaces were needed to cope with the demand.

How many spaces are needed now?

Cars park in this area without restriction. Drivers do not seem to consider the dangers of parking on both sides of the road - more often than not on the footpath - or around the roundabout.。 At busy times the double line of parked vehicles means that only a single car-width exists for through traffic down the middle of the road - a particular problem on Station Street and High Street.

Kibworth has its population of senior citizens.、。 Then there are the shoppers and other residents and , perhaps most at risk,the school children who have to move regular1y through the vil1lage. In the late afternoon this problem is multiplied when school buses serving the High School compete with peak-hour shoppers for all the available 0n the other hand,it seems that many of the shops serving the age remain viable only because access and parking are so easy. Most people use their cars to.visit the shops《how much good it would do if those who were physically able actually walked instead!) and do not expect to hayve to walk very far.。 At peak periods, parking in Kibworth Is nothing short of chaotic,and certainly dangerous.

but many of our local District and Parish Councillors are opposinq the “Yellow Line Route“ until the auestion of off-street parking is resolved.。 Great care needs to be taken to try to ensure that visitors to the shops are not simply driven away because there is nowhere within an acceptable distance to park.

So off-street parking is desperately needed - but where? “_We are al1 too aware of the changing face of the village in recent years,and many. seem to be convinced that what is 1eft should be preserved,if possible , 3S it stands.

Current possibilities appear to consist of the acquisition of 1l1and from S1later「s on Smeeton Road - where in fact a Compulsory Purchase 0rder has been approved (but not served) by the Harborough District Council - and ef the High School Tennis Courts。 Both of these options are serious1ly hampered,howeyer,by one common factor: the apparent lack of funds.

The District Council has allocated a total of 8250,000 during the current financial year_to the budget to deal with the parking problem in the whele of the District - a sum simply not adequate to meet even the cost of the acquisition of the Slater「s site!

One option worthy of consideration is for the Parish Council to raise finance for the acquisition of a site by means of a “one-off“rate. The car park could then be leased back to the District Council,which would be responsible for its continued upkeep, maintenance and repairs. Much depends,therefore,on the views of the villagers and their wil11ingness or otherwise to accept the need for a personal contribution towards the cost of solving the problem,or a wil11ingness to demand a rapid response from the District Council in order to solve the problem.

FINAL THOUGHTS Yellow 1ines alone wil1 not solve the problem. It may be,however , that the consensus is that the safety of pedestrians,residents and road users should come first。 Fairly soon,the Surgery wil11 be moving from Station Street in to the 0ld School bailding. In a recent survey into parking as many as 44 cars were parked in Station Street or near the roundabout ,With up to 17 cars in the current Surgery Car Park .

Where are the patients to go2 The Car Parking Conundrum has been with _us for many years - and we do not seem to be any closer to a solution than We Were in 1972.。 If you have something to say on the subject , please write to the Editor . SURPRISE......

Married 1ife for Mary and Sheffield Jennaway began on their farm outside Coventry where Sheff (as he is known to his friends) combined farming with being an Air Raid Warden in an area where heavy bombardment took place。 Being close to a strategic electric power station it was a worrying time and they had the experience of finding a German Serviceman hiding behind bales of hay under their Dutch barn.

In 1953 they moved with their two daughters to I11ston Grange where they became successful and highly respected members of the farming fraternity .

Sheff possesses a great knowledge of horses and still1 farms some acres of l1and at I11ston although he and Mary “retired“ in recent years to Windmill Gardens .

Their daughters Jean and Betty and their families have planned a Golden Wedding Celebration for family and friends later in May to be held at Jean「s home,Manor Farm House.

KIBWORTH PARENT ASSOCIATION The Annual Summer Fayre in aid of Kibworth Primary Shool wil11 be held on the school premises on Saturday June 24th.

During the afternoon there wil1 be a wide variety of competitive games and entertainments,a selection of music and of course sumptuous refreshments to sustain you during the fun filled hours。 How can you resist?

Within the year Shane was called up and served with the Royal Artillery and 1ater into Radar Communication, before returning to his sales career。 Their married daughter Deane Coupe of Main Street,son Brian in Leicester and son Peter in Australia are al1 settled with families many .of whom were in the ,secret「“ group who surprised them at the Rose and Crown to celebrate their Golden Wedding on 28th Apri1.

0n Wednesday April 12th the Cotswolds,MJ1 visited Chedworth Roman Villa.。 The villa there had first been built in the 2nd century,and continued in use for 250 years or so.

By the end of 4th century Roman Civi1ization was breaking up,and this pleasant way of 1ife came to an end.

The vil1l1a was abandoned,over the years the vi1la fel1 to pieces and the stone was taken away by 1ocal people or burnt to make 1ime.。 Soi1 covered the walls and trees grew on the site,but it was never completely lLost. An excavation was done in 1864 when Queen Victoria was on the throne.

Many interesting things were found.

People in the vi11a were called Dobunni Tribe. The hypocaust was the heating system,and this can still be seen、 There were some lovely old mosaic floors.、 In the turkish baths , they would put oil on themselves and scrape it off with a scraper called a strigil.

The Cotswolds Wild Life Park was really interesting、 There was a Gothic style manor house in the middle of 120 acres of land、 It was built in 1804 The reptile house was fascinating , we saw some Burmese pythons eat a whole chicken each.、。 It was awful!

We had a lecture about insects,birds of prey and reptiles.、 They let us stroke a red legged spider,hold some sort of a boa and touch a bird of prey、 The red pandas were good to study with their 1ittle white and brown Fis h faces and 1ittle white ears.。 It Was interesting to see them being fed。 o ( Cross The man in the kitchen gave me a lot of .information on what their natural 2 diet was and all those sort of things The panda in the quarantine was 扎 called Paddy and the two in the open E air were called Catrina and Tensin.

The Wild Life Park is in the grounds of a manor house, Which was built in 1804.。 It has 120 acres of garden and Parkland.。 There is a very interesting collection of mammals,birds,reptiles,fish and insects.。 In the manor house,we were allowed to goin the dining room to do brass rubbings. We had a lecture room to ourselves for a week.

The wild 1ife Park has got a lot of shrubs,trees and plants. There is a picnic area and an adventure playground,which is very clean. It is all spread out very nicely.。 There is a children「s farm not far from the adventure playground.。 Al1 the people who work at the Park are very friendly and helpful。 We enjoyed our_visit very much。 Alasdair Galloway .

Mr Colin Tory Kibworth wil1 be saddened to learn of the untimely death of Colin Tory 【 1ast week. Colin 1ived in Kibworth, with his wife Bery1 and their children .for more than twenty years and WaS “ wel1-known in the vilLlage. After playing for 0adby Cricket Club in the 「1960「s he moved to Kibworth and continued his cricket here. He had many roles within Kibworth Cricket Club, including captaincy,chairman of the ground committee and umpiring. His last team here was the Sunday Second :XI..。 He wil11 be sadly missed at the Cricket Club.

Another area of interest for Colin was his organisation and participation in the Radio Leicester and other vil1lage quizzes.

Colin was a Civil Engineer Lecturer in the Engineering Department at the Leicester University for many years , later becoming Director of the Audio visual centre. Colin was aIways a ,keen naturalist and birdwatcher , for which he and Bery1 made much use of their cottage in Norfolk.

0ur thoughts go out to Bery1 and the children at this time. Colin will be remembered for many years as a person who helped to enhance social and community 1ife in our vil11age.

Brooksby Agricultural College have recently awarded their scholarship to New Zealand.。 This year「s winner is l1ocal lad John Rivett from Smeeton Westerby .

John 19 worked for Mr.、 Walker of Laughton from leaving school1 and is now completing a years residential study at Brooksby on a National Certificate of Agriculture course.

John is delighted to have won this 12 months trip which wil1 enable him to attend Agricultural Colleges in New Zealand and also to work on various farms. John,who is the second bey from the Kibworth area to win this scholarship,1eaves in August.

The Villagers of Smeeton Westerby are also pleased with their contribution to the second massive collection of waste paper -(May 5th) by Kibworth SCcouts.

Mixed Hoc key, Kibworth Hockey Club were entitled to celebrate on Saturday when they were presented with 2 team and 1 individual trophy at the annual Leics.

M.H.A.Presentation Dance。 The A team enjoyed their best ever season since reaching division 1 seven years ago. As we reported 1ast month they won the senior cup in convincing style and were runners-up in the 7-a-side competition. The team also finished 3rd in the league 7 points behind the champions,English Electric “A“but only 1 point away from Charles Keene College in 2nd place. The team has achieved this remarkable success by a combination of astute leadership by captain Phi1 Harris and a good team spirit amongst the players. In particular Mark Payne has made a valuable contribution, scoring 17 goals,in spite of being injured for the 1ast few matches of the season: Another encouraging sign was the improvement of Liz Marvin in her first season with the team。 Kibworth B team may not have won any trophies this year but they are justifiably pleased with their 4th place in Div.、3 after only gaining promotion 1ast year.。 Leading goalscorer is Robin Ager with,I am told, 「about 10 goals「 (maths is obviously not his strong point). Steve Gaines - originally a spectator husband,has now joined his wife in the team and has shown a great deal of improvement this season. Perhaps the most surprised person of all at the Presentation Dance on Saturday was Lauren Russel1 who was awarded the trophy for the U21 player of the year. This is the first time the trophy has been presented and Lauren and the Kibworth teams were delighted.
