Two local personalities were married on 3rd May at St.Peter 「s Church,Church Langton. Sarah Kendall,the wel1-known Kibworth florist and daughter of Mr and Mrs。 Phillip Kendall of Church Langton, married John Brewin,motor engineer at G.B. Motors Leicester and son of Mr、and Brewin of Kibworth Beauchamp. Sarah wore a full length cream dress with a wreath of flowers as a head-dress and carried a bouquet of 1ily of the valley, stephanotis,cream 1il1ies and roses.

| ASourceof Blessing St Wilfrid「s Church,Kibworth , played a major role in this year「 s Leicester Diocesan Triennial Mothers,「 Union Rally held at the De Montfort ˇHall on 5th May . The theme this year ,was Marriage - A 5ource of Blessing.

The evening began with getting Married in the Mornin「 from My Fair Lady by the Leicester Amateuc 0peratic ! Society and was followed by a 45 min mime by the members of SWORD and St. 1 Wil1frid「s Mothers「 Union before the ,audience of 2,000 people. The narrated mime called for a realistic reenactment of a wedding service. 5WORD members David and Debbie Briggs,being 1 the most recently married,had the ,chance of a second weddlng.、Among other entertaining scenes were a | pantomime-style family - the Troubles and a pantomime cou called Daisy, ably ; manoeuvred by Pat Sharman and 5andra ; Whittingham.Louisa Feltham again ,produced the action from a Script by Mr & Mrs John Skinner . The colourful ,costumes were all hand-made by | Rosemary Webb.

The evening ended with an address by the Bishop of Peterborough.

Slawston Achievement When Slawston Village Hall Committee were faced with the fact that their Hall was falling down they had to make a decision from three options ; to repair the existing building j build a new brick hall; or erect a five sectional prefabricated building .

Even extensive repairs would not have brought the 1919 World War I Army Hut up to. standard. A new brick building was thought by many to be far too expensivyve a project which would take many years and put too much financial strain on a small vill1age already committed to raising substantial sums church.。 The advantages of installing a prefabricated building were many.。 The fact that it would fit exactly on the site given by Mr Berry in 1919,it: would be ready for use very quickly and it could be cladded in brick and given a pitch roof at a 1ater date。 There was 5800 in the kitty at the start of the scheme and some 814,000 has been raised to date - some achievement by a village. of around 68 adults. The hall as it stands ready for use and functional has been bought and paid for in under twelve months .

All the work has been led by a professional building officer Mr 、A. Marlow and Mr.T.、Woodford a builder in the village. It conforms to al1l the regulations and is constructed to high class specification。

The bulk of the work has been done by a small band of conscientious volunteers who have slaved away most weekends over the past six months , initially “clearing the old hall and preparing the site for the delivery of the five sectionsy then completing the construction and totally fitting out the interior with a superb kitchen and bar,toilets including facilities for the disabled,heating and 1ighting. The carpet has just been 1aid and decisions are being made about curtain material which wil1 be made up by Sue Smith.

0ne could not help but be impressed by the incredible result in such a short time by so few enthusiasts .

0n Saturday Lieutenant Colone1 John Heggs performed the Grand 0pening. Invited distinguished guests and yillagers could now see the hall which many other vi11ages would be proud to own.

Slawston Show This show is being held on Sunday 12th June 1988 at Welham Road , Slawston by Kind permission of F Stops and Sons. The day「s events are many and wariedy,offering a good day out for spectators and competitors alike.、 There is show jumpindq inecluding Badminton Feeds qualifying competitions,wWorking and ridden hunter,best turned out,handy pony , gymkhana events,fancy dress and minimus .

Slawston

The church at 31awston has a handsome spire of the type that we noted in the earlier article (Jan 1986) on Thorpe Langton. Normally in a broach spire the eight sides are neatly reduced to four at the junction with the tower by means of 1ittle halfpyramids,as at Gumley and Market Harborough.。 Here at S1awston,as at Thorpe Langton and half a dozen others in this area,there are 1ittle pinnacles standing uneasily upon the sloping broaches.

There is a blocked arch which indicates an earlier south transept or a side chapel,and in the north aisle there are amusing grotesque corbels..

This aisle was formerl1y appropriated to the inhabitants of the hamlet of 0thorpe, one of Leicestershire「s many “1ost vi1lages「 . There is a farm and a 1arge Victorian house on the site , to the north of S1awston. Early in the 1ast century it was recorded … “that a vil1l1age once stood here 15 evident from the foundations which have been found hereabouts; traces of buildings,streets or 1anes now visible. Here is a small close which retains the name of Chapel CLlose, ..、 where,tradition says,the chapel stood.1 Today the people of 0thorpe are remembered by several headstones in S1lawston churchyard which mention the ancient name,and by the indent 扬OUOGCHRQ 招

6 All Change The Railway Pub has just had a change of ownership and there are new friendly faces behind the bar .

Jane and _Alan (《known as Chip) Butcher have taken over as hosts and wil1 be looking after us at our friendly local.。 Alan wil11 stil1 be carrying on as a postman and Jane wil1 continue doing outside catering bookings and hopes to hayve facil1ities for a bar as we1l1.

In June the whole of the Railway is to be redecorated and the lounge is to be completely refurbished.

There wil11 then be a lunchtime carvery available every day in the lounge. The skittles alley wil1 be redecorated too and private parties will1 be able to book dinner for upto forty people,any menu wil1 be provided as required.

Co-opted forthe CO-OP Mr.、 Paul Stanley,who has recent1y taken over as Manager at the Co-op Mart in Kibworth,feels that the branch has a big potential and anticipates increasing sales.。 He is reorganising the meat department by bringing in fresh meat packaged by a butcher in Market Harborough and is also introducing a big range of packaged fresh fish. He very much appreciates the friendly and efficient staff he has inherited.

At Kibworth and Smeeton 「 s May meeting,resolutions were discussed and voted on ready to be taken by our delegate,Mrs Wildman,to the Annual General Meeting in the Albert Hall on 2nd June. As Kibworth has grown so fast in the past few years there is an everexpanding Scout movement which offers boys from the age of 6 to 19 (Beavers through Cubs and Scouts to Ventures ) a fascinating range of activities , challenge and companionship unparalelled to any other group, Unfortunately, all this is not possible without the help and commitment of adults.

I have just discovered that after 30 odd years of raising children,I have been doing it all1 wrong、 No longer do you teach them to respect property,be it your own or someone else「s.

0n Wednesday Richard Tattershall and Hannah Vickers went to Knaptoft to enter to Pre-Rally Dairy Stock Judging and both came 3rd in their age group. The follouing Tuesday Hannah Vickers went to Congerstone to enter the Pig Judging and she came 2nd , whereas the rest of the members went to Foston Hall Farm for a farm walk。 The following day 7 members set out to Bournemouth on two bikes which had been made into a sheep. The Leicestershire Young Farmers were doing this to raise money for the “Leicestershire Society for the B1ind 「 .

All the upper junior classes,UJ1 and UJI2,went to Leicester for a visit to a Sikh Temple: We went because it was the Vaisakhi celebrations. When we got there we al1l had to put our head coverings on and take our shoes off、。 When we were in the temple we had to sit crossed legged or with our feet behind us.

If we put our feet towards the Guru Granth Sahib it would be very rude。 We all were split into four groups。 I was in the Green.。 First of al1 we went to our first activity which was making some badges.。 We had to write our name in Punjabi,。 0ur third activity was trying on some of their clothes. 0ur 1ast activity was going round the exhibition. We Saw some of their wedding dresses. Doctor Joan Slack,a clinical geneticist at The Royal Free Hospital in London,has analysed the family trees of over 200 women with “Breast Cancer“ and she has shown that there is an ,increased“,risk to some women which,until nowy,has been _neglected.

Should your mother,sister or daughter develop the disease before the age of 50,your chances of getting Breast Cancer is 1 in 4,compared with the average risk of 1 in 14.。 If you have more than one close relative who has Breast Cancer ear1ly , the risk can increase to 1 in 2. _However,where only one close relative is affected by the disease after she reached the age of 50,your risk then drops,to only 1 in 8.

“Meat and Two Veg.“may become the new name for “Smith「s Corner“since David Chandler joined forces with Frank Palmer.。 David and Frank have been friends for many years and when Stringers,the butchers in High Street closed down,it was a good opportunity for David to moyve his butchery business from his A6 shop to the middle of the vi11lage shopping centre. Frank had always wanted to introduce a butchery department into his shop,so this was an ideal arrangement. Business is doing very well1 and Frank and David extend a warm welcome to all customers,old and ney. In addition to their partnership in the shop,they are about to form a new company dealing in catering supplies.

Cancer Research Campaign Plants and shrubs from the Kibworth Nursery Centre were on display at a Fashion Show by Spot Boutique. This event was held to raise money for the Cancer Research Campaign and was organised by the Kibworth Branch,the Ladies of which were very pleased at making 5277.30.。 The event was attended by 98 people,and was held in the Village Hall.

The Bell Inn, When Frenchman Pascal Trystram (it「s a Cornish surname,but that is another story1) and his Leicestershire born wife,Eileen,arrived from Belgium six years aqo to take over The Bell Inn,it was a traditional vi11age pub with a history stretching back over three hundred years. The building,and the forge next door,are Ssaid to date back to 1627.

Pascal saw a gap in the market in England which he feels stil1 exists - between the “fast food“ restaurants on one hand and the top Class establishments on the other. He felt that a “middle market“ Inn providing good food at affordable prices would fil11 the void nicely.

He was right - for the Inn was a success from the start and,indeed , Pascal admits that for the first three years the main problem was to cope with the demand whilst maintaining the standards which he and his wife set out to achieve.

The Inn has been physically altered very 1ittle during the past six years (apart from a refurbishment of some of the out-buildings to provide a 1arger and more modern kitchen) , and retains its essential charm both inside and out.、。 Seating a maximum of 40 guests in comfort,the restaurant flourishes and The Bel1 is keen to maintain its status as a “country Inn“ - patrons may pop in just for a quiet drink or two if the mood takes Lhem.

The Inn is open during normal pub hours and serves food at al1 times except for Sunday evenings and on Mondays. Sunday lunch is at a fixed price of 88.50 and a traditional roast is prepared together with a choice of dishes from the “prix fixe“ menu.。 The Inn is happy to cater for the visitor who wants only a snack from a bow1 of soup to one of the interesting starters on the menu at about f2.00. In a recent end of season tournament at Gartree High School1,0adby, they played three matches,and came awWay with one victory,one draw and one defeat.

The team is coached by Mrs. D. Briggs、 Correspondents: Faye Sturgess and Andrea Tunneyc1iff.

The inaugural season of the Kibworth and District Invitation Snooker League ended 1ast month with Chalkies the championship by the narrowest of margins; with 90 points from 19 matches,they just held off runners-up_Winchester A ,who totalled 89 points.。 The committee would 1ike to thank all the- participating venues and teams for making the season a success,both in terms of sportsmanship and hospitality .

For the three home teams there was no joy in the league itse1f,though in the Knockout Cup competitions the Red Arrows (B. Holyoak,D.Smith, G. Bosworth and B. Glover) reached the final of the team event,whilst G、Bosworth and B, Glover also won through to the pairs final .
