禹 Mrs Peggy Pitman who has served the Local community for the past 30 years in charge of the Kibworth Red Cross Medical Aid Depot has been awarded the Red Cross Certificate of Commendation for meritorious service

by Leicestershire Branch of the Society、 The award was made by the Lord Mayor of Leicester at the Branch annual general meeting.

Peggy has now retired and the Kibworth Medical Aid Depot has now Cclosed : Members of the public who require Medical Aid equipment should now apply to the Red Cross Medical Aid Department,76 Clarendon Park Road , Leicester,Tel. Leicester 700747 or the Market Harborough & District Hospital on Mondays to Fridays between 11 and 12 oclock (Tel. New Playgroup The Church Langton Playgroup has been “revamped「“1 The two new Play-Leaders Jackie Hatt and Ange1a Twynham decided the importance of having a playgroup within the village and especially the close proximity of the building to the infant and junior school.

The building「s exterior is not very attractive,but inside it is 1arge,1ight,airy and carpeted (heated in winter) and offers a lovely environment for children, The hut,owned by the Hanbury Trust,stands in the playing fields behind the Primary Hazel 『 Walker from the Preschool Pl1aygroup Assocn.、 has been advising Jackie and Angela. Existing equipment is being used and some new has been Jackie and Angela work closely with the reception class in the Primary School so activities are not repeated unnecessarily and the children have a smooth transition into full time school.

The playgroup caters for 3 to rising 5s and is open iTuesdays,Wednesdays and Thursdays 9.15 am to 12 noon at a cost of 51 per session per child。 If you would 1Like to know more ring Jackie or Angela (E. There wil1 be a variety of stalls and a raffle、 Everyone welcome. 鲁Smeeton Westerby may soon be among the many thousands of vi11ages up and down the Country who have taken up the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. Kibworth Harcourt「s most important open green space which 1ies at the heart of the Conservation Area has become the l1atest target for developers, who admit that “a certain amount of Cynicism“ is 1ikely to surround their application for 39 starter homes.。 An estate on the site - used as a field for grazing animals since before the Domesday survey - could open the way for similar developments on greenfield sites. “_Welland Homes Ltd are seeking out1ine planning permission for 39 starter homes on 1.1 hectares (2.7 acres}) or 10 executive houses on 1.33 hectares (3.29 acres) off Albert Street. The land is owned by Mr Geoffrey Ward of The 01d Barn,,Albert 5treet,Kibworth Harcourt。 S The issue of starter homes is a major talking point in Kibworth at present and it would be naive not to expect developers to exploit this:.

However,Harcourt residents see this as a means of detracting from the real issues and an attempt at “emotional blackmail“.

The future of other sites in Kibworth is stil1 uncertain, and one of these could prove suitable for 1ess expensive homes if developers are genuine in their desire to“tap“ this end of the market。 The site is designated as ,an important open space“「“in the Local Plan adopted 1ast year.。 Under the Plan land fronting Albert 3treet is . intended for use as a children「s play area while the rest of the site 1s outside the 1imit for vil1l1age develop-

ment. (A recent application to build on l1and next to the recreation ground in Kibworth Beauchamp,which is: also outside the boundary for development , was turned down by Harborough District planning committee .) : Villagers are confident of a united front in their battle to halt the plans. Any other outcome,they say , would make a mockery of planning procedures._ Kibworth「s two district Ccouncillors are opposing the scheme , which they say would set a “disastrous「! precedent.

Lun Welland Homes are known to be persistent in their efforts to build on _controversial sites,as was the case at Dalby Avenue,Bushby ,an estate of 23 homes which has won the praise of planners.、 Many developers are believed to employ planning consultants,particularly since the Government relaxed policies regarding use of agricultural l1and.

Kibworth Harcourt Conservation Society fee1l the case for dismissing the application is strengthened by previous planning refusals on the sitey one of which was taken to appeal and waSs turned down by the Environment

Secretary. Any development would destroy the setting of the 01d House and neighbouring 1isted buildings, say the Society.

Financial constraints may have affected “the District Council「s decision not to take out a compulsory purchase order for the designated play space. Kibworth Harcourt Parish Council,who have drawn up their own 1ist of objections,have been told that the matter is being raised with the District Valuer.。 Is there a possibility of vi1l1agers themselves raising the cash to save this piece of l1and for future generations? It should be remembered that this area is within the 1imits for development.

Welland Homes managing director , Mr Eric Wood,said developers were moving out to vil1lages,even those with a population as small as 200, because no 1and was available in City centres。 Prices for starter homes could begin at around 838,000/839,000,said Mr Wood,with some aspect of shared ownership or rented accommodation.

A row has also erupted over three young horse chestnut trees, which were bought with public money and planted some seven years ago behind the boundary wall of the site. During Mr Ward「s conversion of the 01d Barn,, one of the trees was badly damaged and was removed by District Councillor and Tree Warden,Mr Michael Stops.

Protective fencing was later found to be missing from the other two trees and their bark damaged.。 The field normally contains a horse and a donkey.

Mr Ward,who has now put barbed wire round the trees and has treated the damaged bark,said he did not wish to see trees die. However,it has been noted that one of the chestnuts has been further vandalised within the 1ast few days。 The applications come before the Harborough District Council planning committee on July 12th:Principal planning officer (development control) Mr Ian Althorpy says the following factors wil11 help determine the outcome of the applications: , 伊 The site is in a conservation area and is an important open Sspace. 伟Part of the area is a designated play space.

The rest of the site is outside the_boundaries for vi11age development as stated in the 伊 Local Plan and County Structure P1an:

In a conservation area,the existing buildings gave the “design key“ for other development,said Mr Althorp .

The predominant characteristic of the surrounding area was frontage development.。 A l1arge residential estate would not be strictly compatible with the rest of the vil1lage.

Party to Violence The Chronicle now takes a break

We were all horrified to hear of the very nasty incident at Smeeton Westerby when a party was invaded by fifty youths,people were hurt and property badly damaqed.

So far,eleven arrests have been made.

4 The youths had left a privately organised disco at the Community Centre.。 As a result of this trouble which occurred after the disco,the matter of private lettings wil1 be discussed at Kibworth Community Centre management meeting in 0ctober.。 There wil11 be no further private lettings taken until a decision has been made.

It must be stressed that there are very few incidents in this area which involve 1arge numbers of youths,and the majority of young people have respect for themselves and others and can enjoy themselves without hurting others. It is also unfortunate that in response to the constant cry from young people for things to do,when events are arranged they are abused and used as collecting points for those who have a warped idea of fun。 0bviously drink plays an important part in causing unsocial behaviour and also changing otherwise placid individuals into aggressive antisocial yobs1「。 Whilst nct wanting to sound 1ike a siren for a tee-total approach ,we should all examine our attitude to alcoholic drink., There is also a good range of non-alcoholic beers and wines available which should be the on1ly drink available for functions for young peop1le.

There is obviously no easy answer to the problem of violence amongst the young - forming-only part of the very complex social climate - but it might be hoped that within our community we can build up a framework of mutual respect so these unfortunate incidents become a thing of the past 、 Editor

Gau/by The Seven Churches「“Barn Dance at Caulby on Saturday 4th June,had an attendance of 375 and 52000 was raised for the 1inked churches ,This has become such a popular.event that it is to be Gaulby「s Annual Spring occasion In addition to the above,a Garden Fete is to take place this coming September.。 A date has yet to be set it is a question of trying to avoid Clashing with other nearby events , but it wil1 be early in the month。 This is to be a villase effort on behalf of their own Church,and is to be held in the gardens of the Manor House , (the home of Professor and Mrs Goldsmith) . ….. 30d 川ston

Kibworth and Smeeton W.I,had their “tea 1eaves“ read-or rather their “tea roses“ read at their 1ast meeting、、Members were asked by their guest,Mrs Norma B1akey,to bring along a flower from which she would analyse the owners. Mrs.B1akey analysed not only personal characteristics and physical problems but also could recount occasions in the owners 1ives。 A surprising number of these predictions were right and for those which were not,members were urged to “put the suggestion on the for a few months and see if it made more sense with the passinq of time。

The type and colour of the flower is considered immaterial,it is the aura which is seen in Mrs BLlakey「s mind「s eye and feelings felt in her body,the latter especially regarding ailments.

Mrs.B1akey runs workshops and works privately with people in the areas of self-discovery and human awareness and potential,body 1anguage,symbols interpretation of dreams,Colours , extra sensory perception,relations , Ccounselling,also help with healing the self 。

Well over 250 Whist Drives have been arranged at I11ston-on-the-Hi11, sometimes in neighbouring vi11ages, 、 A silver spoon had been presented

0n #4th June at St.Wilfrid「s, Kibworth,Diane Palmer of Paget Street married Robert Andrew Price of Lubenham.。 The bride who wore a dress of white tulle with ruched bodice and sleeves decorated with sequins and seed pearls,carried a “bouquet of gladioli,stephanotis,1ily of the valley,peach roses and freesias .

She was attended by two bridesmaids , Mrs Sharon Watts,sister of the groom and Amanda Stanley friend of the bride. The best man was the groon「 s brother,Paul Price. After a reception at Roosters,the couple honeymooned in Turkey .

Diane is Liaison 0fficer with the “Alliance and Leicester Building Society,and Robert is Production Manager with Smith and Hamy1lton (0pticians).。 The couple wil1 1ive in Paget Street and we wish them a Long 1ife together .

MethodistChurchCarpet In a previous issue of the Chronicle it was reported that D.I.,Y. members of the Church had raised the level of the floor of the aisle to that of the pews in an expert way.。 In Continuance of this improvement Zzeal,the aisle is now carpeted in toning grey,thanks to the efforts of Mr Ray Thorpe and his wife Betty,who not only scoured the area for the right width,Colour and: lengthybut on managing to meet these requirements,put the carpet into place。

Tenth Birthday Draw 10th Birthday Party Lucky Ticket Draw The winners of the free dinner at Champers in Market Harborough,Peter and Carol Craig,had a very enjoyable evening there with a delicious supper and the added bonus of a complimentary bottle of wine.。 The Chronicle would 1ike to thank “Champers“for donating the first prize and also to Bamfords , Harborough Hire,Kibworth Nursery for their generous gifts。

The Wedding took place on 14th May at St,Giles Church,Medbourne,of Vivien Stanton and Alistair Chapman.

Five Kibworth Venture Scouts took part in a sponsored canoe expedition arranged by the 01d Union Canal Society。 They canoed 21 miles from Watford Top Lock to Foxton. The boys were Steven and Chris Hollingsworth,Stephen Pearce,iartin Pullen and Mark Bishop. They raised over 8100 for Great 0rmond Street Hospital。 They found the trip great fun,though quite hard work,and had to be inventive as to where to secure torches to 1ight them through the tunnels。

Derek Catt has recently been appointed Group Scout Leader of Kibworth Scout Group.

Derek moved to Kibworth, with his wife and twyo sons,1last year. He has bsen involved with Scouting since joining as a Cub Scout at the age of 8 and as a Leader for over 16 years.

His role as G.3.L、is to build and maintain a good relationship within the group and with other youth organisations,and to give support and encouragement to leaders and members of the Group。 Derek feels that there is a great potential for Scouting to grow within Kibworth,but this cannot happen without more adult help. No qualifications are required,as training and every support wil1 be given。 Help need not be as a uniformed member but the most urgent needs,at the present time,are with the Cub and Scout sections. LANGTON The 1Lst Langton Cub Scouts have just completed the work for the wor1ld conservation badge. This is a badge which is carried out by a group of boys and,in this case,by the whole pack over nine months .

The boys undertook the fo1lowing projects : 1 Made a bird table,provided food for the birds throughout the winter .

2。 Mounted an anti-1itter campaign particularly around Church Langton.

3.Went on an expedition with the pack looking at ways in which man damages nature and improves nature.。 They learned about the Country Code.

4。Learned about hedgehogs,birds of prey and other animals in danger locally.

5. Learned about creatures in danger of extinction in the world and what can be done to save them.

6. 0bserved the development of a butterfly and studied plant growth.

7 Undertook an aluminium recyc1ling Campaign.

During this period the pack “adopted“「“a hedgehog,a kestrel and a squirrel through the Wildlife Hospital Trust in Aylesbury. They also raised money by holding a tuck shop at Church Langton School to finance these adoptions.

0n Tuesday 10 May we woke up in our hotel in Whitby.、 We were going to visit the harbour and we were all excited .

We watched the boats sail in and out and the water moving、。 We went up to the fish quay where there were black lobsters also crabs which were alive,and haddock,which were dead.

Some of us seen black 1ive Lobsters before and it was quite exCiting .

Then we took our lunch up to the 1ighthouse on a 4-mile walk,wel1 it seemed 1ike it anyway . After we had had our lunch a coach (a posh coach) took us to Robin Hood「s Bay ,where we spent 2 hours looking for sea creatures 、 People found a l1ot of crabs and shrimps. .Someone found a sand eel After that we dried our feet and walked up the beach looking for some jet and fossils.。 Then we went back on the coach and back to the hotel and had out evening meal,a 3-course which was Lovely.

Short Tennis 0n 13th March,ALlasdair Galloway and Ben Cramp entered the Leicestershire Short Tennis Tournament and came 1st Etripp and 2nd respectively.。 The boys then attended coaching at Groby before | entering the regional tournament on 16th April。 The. first four boys from Leicestershire, Lincolnshire , C Northamptonshire,Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire took part in this competition. Now the committee and its officebearers are once again asking for Kibworthians to volunteer to join them in their work, which could otherwise be imperilled.

At the 1ast meeting of the hal1 committee,on Tuesday 17th May , chairman,Mr W.5.Coleman,stressed how urgent was the need for new members of the committee,and for the election of new office-bearers in one or two instances,where the present incumbents felt they had served beyond their intended time. …

The Werd conjures up an ever-changing spectrum of bril1liantly coloured glass,and was chosen by the St.Wilfrid!s Church Flower Cuild as the title of their Festival of Flowers to be held on Friday 26th August to Monday 29th August. The beautifully stained glass Windows inside the Church, depicting scenes from the 1ife of Jesus,his teaching and work,wil1 provide the inspiration for many beautiful and varied flower arrangements by members of the Guild and other talented local flower arrangers. These wil1 be combined with crafts made by local residents where appropriate.

After viewing the flowers, Visitors cari wander through to the New Church Hall where they can partake of coffee and biscuits,ploughman 「 s lunches or home-made teas,according to the time of day. In addition,there will be attractive stalls selling preserves and cakes,presents and plants. 0ffers of help in prowiding flowers,plants or produce wi11 be gratefully accepted.

The production of the paper month by month involves hundreds of peop1le, many of them doing a great deal. Two who have stood down at the recent ACGM are Geoiff Lidbetter and Bryan Porteous .

「Phone 1ines last month buzzed al1 over Kibworth as residents spotted bees hovering round their roof-tops.

Calls to the police brought Bee Expert Mr Derek GLlover from North Kilworth to the rescue.。 Casting an eye over the situation,Mr Glover knew that the phenomenon he was witnessing was a number of scout bees sent ahead of a SWarm. Al1 he could do was to Wait until the swarm appeared.

A swarm of bess In May Ts worth a 1oad of hay Suddenly on a Sunday afternoon , neighbours alerted Mrs Lilian Meadows of The Lea,Kibworth Beauchamp , to the fact that her garden was the centre of attention of an enormous cloud of bees. A call to the police again summoned Mr Glover and this time he knew that the expected swarm had arrived.。 The queen bee had by this time settled onto a hawthorn tree , with _countless others clinging to her and each other in a writhing brown masSs.。 Mr GLlover,wearing only an overall for protection,cut the branches containing the bees off the tree , gently shook them into a woven straw basket - a skep - and 1eft it inverted for the other bees to find.。 This process took until dusk. Mr GlLlover explained that the bees in the skep attract the bees left behind by fanning a scent to them from special glands in their abdomens and gradually they would all1 find their way to the others.

A Secretary ““Come into the Garden Maud, the Gardening Club needs youl Kibworth,Smeeton & District Gardening Club suffered a set back 1ast month when they were told that their Secretary ,Mrs.Maud Richards “had been struck down with the complaint that gardeners fear most , the dreaded “bad back“ In Maud 「s case this has proved far worse than at first expected,and she wil1 be forced to 1ie in bed for the next 6 weeks on her back,and has been banished from gardening for many months to Come 。 Mrs Richards had not only been the Clubs Secretary for the past 6 years; she had been the “hub“ of the Gardening Club,organising the speakers for the Clubs monthly meetings during the winter ,and outings to gardens and places of interest during the summer. Forced to give up suddenly has been a sad decision for Maud but,as she said in her letter of resignation to the Club,“a secretary who cannot write is not much use,and ink just wi11 not flow up hilL1.“ The Committee and members send their thanks to Maud for her past work,and wish her wel1 in the future.。 We hope it won「t be too long until we see her again at Our monthly meetings、 At l1ast months meeting the Chairman called for a volunteer to take over as Secretary,but up to date there has been no response,and the Committee wil1 try to cope as long ˇ as possible. The loss of such a person as Maud has,to use a gardening expression,“dropped them right in the compost“and the Committee ask the members to make allowances unti1 the organisation can be smoothed out again. The July meeting was to have been a Garden Party at the home of Mr & Mrs Richards,where members had had such a good time on previous year3, but this has had to be cancelled.

The August outing wil1 be a visit to the Botanical Gardens at Cambridge Details are being finalised,and members should get in touch with a member of the Committee .

The There was a “first“ at Saddington,, at least for a very long time,on Wednesday 8th June “_when the Annual Deanery Service took place at the vil1lage church,with evensonq arranqed by the Parochial Church Councils of the Deanery. Among those attending were the Rural Dean and representative Clergymen from the concerned parishes. The Langtons are having a new “Priest in Charge“ from 1 July. The Reverend Zolile Mbalil,who is at present curate at St Mary s Knighton,, will1 take the position and there wi11 be an induction on 11 July at Church Langton. He wil1 hold the additional position of Community and Race Relation 0fficer .

The Rev. Mbali was born in 1940 in Johannesburg and graduated at 0xford in Theology.。 He was ordained in 1972.

His wife,Charlotte is National Chairperson of the World Development Movement and currently teaches English to Asian Ladies. The Mbalis have three children. The eldest,Thandewe , who is nearly 12 wil1 go to Kibworth High School,Ma-Jali (9) and Mandisa (7) will attend Church Langton Primary School. Roll upl The Kibworth Branch of the Cancer Research Campaign were thrilled to see so many people at the Garden Party when 8404 was raised towards this very worthwhile cause. The raffle prize winners were Victoria Hughes, Mrs Hughes of East Langton,Mrs Fowler , Mrs Lyon,Miss Holyoak,Miss K Lee, Amy Buffrey,Mr White. Jessica was the name of the doll which people were trying to guess, Mr Lyon won with the name of Jemima which was the closest. There were many stalls and games for old and young to play.

Although the weather waS _not Kind , many people were able to enjoy their cream teams, sitting on the 1awn at the home of Mr and Mrs John Josephs , who once again extended their kind hospitality to everyone by opening their garden,for which we would 1ike to thank themCarol Juckes Open (very) wide!

HOUSE HALLATON The Torch Trust for the B1Lind sprang from very small beginnings. In 1931 two sisters 1iving in the Lake District started a magazine in Brail1e Called “Torch“. In 1959 when one sister died and the other had become i11,she got in touch with Mr & Mrs Heath in Reigate,who had already opened their house to the blind,and asked if they would carry on with the magazine. This they agreed to do and it was from this beginning that the present organisation has grown.

Ron and Stella Heath had several moves to 1arger premises to accommodate their growing “family“ and their printing activities.

House No.3 was a fifteen-5bedroomed house at Hurstpierpoint,which has been retained by the Trust as a holiday and rest home。 Countrywide Support

Many of our readers when passing through the vill1age of Hallaton may have observed the warning road sign that blind people were crossing and wondered just what went on behind the high walls of Torch House. A very great deal goes on. Torch House , formerly Hallaton Hall,and the home of theVocational Sisters,has been the H.Q.「s of the Torch Trust for the B1ind since 1974、。 Briefly,the aims of the Trust are to make Christian Scriptures available to the visually handicapped and to give them the personal care they need to grow to Christian maturity 、 With these aims in viewy,Torch House provides accommo dation for about 40 people,blind and A training scheme introduced in 1979 provides a year「s course for blind people,combining Bible Study and practical guidance to enable them to cope with washing,ironing, cooking craft work etc. If further practical training is necessary,they may spend a Lime at the Manor House,Fleckney .

The major work undertaken by “The Torch Family“at Hallaton is in the production and distribution of Christian 1iterature to the blind and partially sighted all1 over the world、Their equipment ,which includes a computer ,is of a very high standard and the results are highly professional.Books, pamphlets and magazines are printed in Braille but the Giant Print Books are painstakingly written by hand in the homes of dedicated volunteers. There is a 1arge 1ibrary of books in Braille and a collection of 1,000 tapes which are sent out al1 over.the world to registered readers by free post。 Magazines in Braille covering many groups of readers are written, printed or taped,and distributed from Torch House. 0ne book currently being printed is bound for Russia under the auspices of the United Bible Society 、

There are now approximately 150 Torch Fellowship Groups throughout the Country Where blind people can meet together. A feature of Torch House are the houseparties which are regularly arranged for different agegroups. The choir is a popular activity for Torch members who are taken in their minibus to sing in clubs for the blind,in prisons and in churches. They also record their songs on tape in their very sophisticated recording room at Torch House。 The Torch Community has always been eager to take part in the 1ife of Hallaton and an opportunity to be of service came soon after arrival The doctors found themselves without accommodation for their surgery and the Trust was able to offer them the use of their medical room、。 So now tWice a week the vi11agers come to Torch House to see their doctors and one of the staff acts as Receptionist. There is mutual help between the Trust and many residents of Hallaton and there are always a lot of visitors on 0pen Days。 Although,naturally,Torch House alWays_has a need for finance,they receive no grants and do not appeal for funds.、。 Nevertheless, money always seems to appear when the need is -greatest,and those who run this very interesting and worthwhile organisation haye supreme faith that it -alWays wil1 。

SPORTS DAY 0n Monday 6 June we had our Sports Day.。 We were put into four different colours,Yellow,Red,Blue and Green.

I was in Yellow.。 We had a choice of four events that we could enter 。 There was hurdles,75m sprint,1long jump and triple jump. You-_ could score 3,2 or 1 points.。 0n the hurdles,I scored 2 points,on the long jump 1 point and on the triple jump,I scored 1 point. After I had done all1 my events I went over to my class and we did our novelty races.。 First of al1 we did the three-legged race which I won with Richard Larratt,then we did a Wheel-barrow race,but we were shccting 。 I did it with Patricia Catland6,we didn「t win that race. Then we did the tug-of-war but another team won that、。 After was the 800m challenge and the mixed age relay..

Matthew Wray won the boys「“800m.、and Emily Tyler won the girls「,800m. Then we had the relay races: Yellow team won _both the relays.、 The presentation came next: the Yellow team won the Ireland Cup with a grand total of 339 points.。 After a Llovely afternoon,we packed up and went home for tea .

ALlthough I applaud P Trystram「s action in establishing a “middle market Inn providing good food at affordable prices“ I feel that other important factors were forgotten.

Initially,the restaurant activities were restricted to the lounge area leaving the bar,even if a 1ittle “down market“,to the lLocals who might only wish to drink and meet other inhabitants of the village. Unfortunately,this wasn 「t to 1ast and soon the bar was also converted into a dining area leaving the “locals out in the cold“ The majority of inhabitants of East Langton feel we have not on1ly lost our “local“ but also an important meeting place essential to village 1ift. It is a great disappointment that the Bell Inn could not have evolved along with Mr Trystram「s wishes and at the same time remained a “1ocal“ in the true sense of the word.

This is their first venture into the 1licensed trade.。 Geoffrey was an engineer in Formula 1 racing whilst Cherrie has worked for 2 years at The Crown,Anstey.

They wil11 re-open the restaurant soon and they aim for high standards for both Locals and “passing trade“.

Strange qreen and yellow mini-buses have been seen round Kibworth!County Hal1 explained that the County Trave1 bus between Fleckney and Market Harborough,via Kibworth,had gone because the service had not been commercially viable. LOW COST HOUSING There was an interesting article in a national newspaper on 15 June regarding low priced rural housing.

A rural housing association to provide homes for people who cannot afford soaring vi11age house prices has been launched at the Three Counties Show at Malvern。 The National Agricultural Centre Rural Trust has so far established 14 charitable associations aiming to build small groups of houses,f1ats and cottages,not for sale but retained for rent.

Hopefully,we wil1 be able to find out more about this scheme by the next issue.

MIXED HOCKEY PHOT0O he successfu1 2nd XI attending a zecent orange-tasting- Leadqing SCorez,, Huw ParFU, seems to be rather less adept at contro1l7ing fruit than ba111 Snooker 0ver the past few years the popularity of snooker has grown enormously,as is reflected by the number of young people taking up the game、At Kibworth W.MH.C。there are several very good youngsters,most notable Andy Fisher,aged 18,who is rapidly developing into a very fine player indeed、 Andy began playing at a tender age,and has played most of his snooker for the cLlub,where he is currently reigning singles champion, he also recently won the singles knock-out cup in the District Snooker League. In his efforts to break into the higher ranks of the sport,Andy is now being helped by the generous sponsorship of Mr L Nicolello,a local tournament referee.We wish him the best of Luck.

Cricket Kibworth Cricket Club have made an excellent start to their 1988 league campaign. The 1st XI are second in Div.1 of the L.C.C.L、with four wins in their first seven games、The main run-makers to date have been Ian Marsden and Dave Gadsby,with Gadsby and John Lucas getting among the wickets。 The 2nd XI are top of their division and there has been many notable performances: Graham Bayes with an early season century,Geoff Lee and Tony Wicks both scoring half centuries Tony has also taken wickets regularly,, along with newcomer Chris Turnbull.

The two Sunday sides hayve showed better form this year,and it is encouraging that many of the Club「s junior players are playing Sunday「 Senior cricket.

The Junior sitde has fixtures right through the season,and to date has performed yery we11.

The Club are fortunate again this year to entertain Leicestershire County Cricket Club; this game wi11 be on Friday 12th August、 ]

This has been an excellent month for the school「s athletes.、To begin with, both the under-15 and under-13 teams won the 3.Leics. area championship trophies,then. at the Leics. & Rutland AAA meeting,the junior gir1s won the 4x100m relay trophy ,beating some recognised athletic clubs along the way,whilst the boys took a bronze medal in the same event。 At the County Sports,the gir1s relay team won again,to become County Champions,whilst Matthew Ponder won “the championship for under-14 boys at 1500m.、0ther noteworthy individual performances were: Louis Herbert,2nd in boys 100m,and Hannah Vickers,2nd in the under-15 girls hurdles。 To cap a notable month,both the boys and girls junior 4x100m relay teams took part in a match between Loughborough and the AAA,at which several international athletes participated.、。 Both squads were involyed in thrilling blanket finishes,having led at the final baton-change; the girls were finally adjudged to have been squeezed into second place by 0.02secs,whilst the boys had to endure an agonising 25 minutes of photo-scrutiny before being declared joint winners in a dead-heat,a most unusual result , given the full range of international standard judging equipment in use.

It was a thrilling experience for both teams to perform so well in front of nearly 3,000 spectators, and to be awarded their medals by Loughborough「s international runner , Jack Buckner .

At the recent AGM of the Kibworth Mixed Hockey Club,the following officers were elected: 1st XI Captain Phil Harris; 2nd XI Captain,Jon Allen; Secretary,Angela Cains ; Treasurer, Martin Jones; Chairman , Robin Ager .

The 1st XI wWere reported to have had a disappointing season by recent standards.、 Their players of the year were Kelly Beadle and Kasamir Sahota.

The 2nd XI in contrast,had an excellent year,finishing as runnersup in Div.、4,and Winning promotion.

Players of the year wWere Liz Marvin and Nick Papworth.、。 The award for the club「s leading goalscorer wWent to the 2nd XI「s HuWw Parry.

0n 20 May at The Glen,5.Wigston, the 2nd XI had attended a presentation at which they received the runnersup「s team and individual shields.

The trip to the Isle of Man festival in May was a great success not purely in hockey terms. The highlight of the weekend was the last day「s horse-riding.、 As far as the ostensible purpose of the excursion Was concerned,the team won four matches,drew four and Lost two. 关 关 关 Training for next season wil1 begin on Tuesday 19 July at 6.45 pm on the Warwick Road pitch and continue on following Tuesdays.。 Any new players, especially youngsters,of whatever standard,wil1 be very welcome.
