I am Michael Bladon residing in Kibworth Beauchamp,and a Beauchamp Parish Councillor. Married with 2 children, both of whom married in the village and now live locally, we now have 4 grandchildren.

I am Sales Manager for the Yarn division of Hollas Group PLC and travel extensively in the UK & EU. We have lived in the village for some 30 years and have raised the family and enjoyed the use of the village facilities in Education, Leisure and Services.

The village has grown during this period and the structure is now being put to the test with the proposal of a further large expansion.

The draft stage of the plan is for 350 houses and infill. I believe this plan is basically flawed and should be changed as I stated at the first public meeting held in Autumn 1993.

The expansion is based on the supposition that Kibworth is on a transport corridor which means we should have a railway station and alternate means of transport based on the Present size and population of our villages, not what they might be in the future. There is no evidence of elther being available within the Period of the plan.

My view ls that growth should be kept to a minimum.The existing infrastructure of Kibworth and Smeeton Westerby will need upgrading to meet the needs of existing residents now. This is the responsibility of the local authorities irrespective of draft local plan PrOposals.

A recent survey by the Keep Kibworth Rural group showed that the people of Kibworth and Smeeton Westerby have considerable concern.

I therefore offer myself as an independent candidate, fully supported by KEEP KIBWORTH RURAL, to the District Council at the elections on the 4 May 1995.

Peter Burfoot Independent (Keep Kibworth Rural) I am a Tesident of Kibworth Harcourt, a Harcourt Parish Councillor and now offer myself for election to the District Council in order to represent the views of the villages of Smeeton Westerby, Beauchamp and Harcourt.

These are the views Which were so clearly exXpressed in the survey recently undertaken by KEEP KIBWORTH RURAL. During the coming eighteen months a final decision will be made on the District Local Plan which will affect all aspects of life in our villages. So far, at the draft stage of the plan, 550 new housing units have been allocated to Kibworth. The basis of this allocation is, I believe,manifestly wrong and has been formulated on prejudice and bias against Kibworth. It must be challenged and amended in the same manner as the allocations to other villages (notably Houghton-on-the-HilD) so that the requirements of the whole District of Harborough are fairly and equitably distributed throughout the District and not concentrated solely in 8 settlements out of a total of 94 settlements district wide.

The Plan covers a period of 10 years., thus not only are we at risk noW but we are at greater risk in the future. Certain sWeeteners will be negotiated if we agree to massive new housing developments. But these, in the main, are not definltively granted;not legally enforceable on developers and are unlikely to amount to anything more than empty words in reality.

In the past Kibworth and Smeeton Westerby have taken substantial amounts of development and the time has now arrived for consolidation.

As thriving communities natural growth will occur and some new housing will be required for the young, the elderly, the disadyvantaged and the disabled; but these requirements appl1y equally throughout the District. What is so unreasonably planned for Kibworth (and remember half will fall in the Parish of Harcourt) is the placing of 100 acres of farmland under new buildings which to me is environmentally unacceptable.This is not sustainable development - once land is lost to bricks, mortar and tar macadam it is seldom ITecovered - it will create pollution from thousands of additional daily vehicular movements and adversely affect all surrounding villages by its sheer scale. This is urbanisation of the countryside at its very Worst.

Our ancient villages are under threat as at no other time in their long history. For my part I have previously served as a borough councillor on planning and transportation. My experience ls therefore available for the defence of all aspects of your village life.

I do not and have never supported the commercial adventures of developers and landowners Who seek to profit from endangering our environment. New housing must therefore be kept to an absolute minimum to satisfy known requirements whilst we must ensure that our villages continue to thrive by their receiving all the community and other facilities that local authorities, not developers, are responsible for supplying.

I run _my owh _computer systems consultancy business and have been privileged to travel widely throughout the country, and have been able to meet a wide variety of people and businesses. I am the current President and Editor of the Leicestershire Small Business Club.

Like many of you, my family and I moved to Kibworth because we wanted to live in a Tural village you, I would like to see the villages of Kibworth Beauchamp, Kibworth Harcourt and Smeeton Westerby remain as villages, so that we can all continue to enjoy the unique qualities of life they Provide, Like you, I want Kibworth and Smeeton to retain their friendIy village atmosphere and not be spoilt by gross over development. @ 工our local Conservative Party and I will listen to local democratic views to ensure, if I am elected on 4 May, that a collective local voice represents our villages at Harborough. I strongly believe the housing development plans for Kibworth are wrong and will seek to have them drastically altered to ensure the villages retain their character and we can plan for a long-term infrastructure strategy to improve our facilities without selling out to developers. @ TTaffic through our villages increases daily, especially as local shop trade continues to develop and prosper. It is important to Teassure traders and customers that any democratically agreed improvements to our villages do not damage the freedom of movement and the convenience of parking that we all enjoy. @ Although dog binsare in evidence, many of USs,especially our children,still have to contend with dog fouling on payvements and Tecreation areas.A dog might well be man「s best friend, but they can also harbour disease which can damage the health of our children.

A much stronger campaign is needed,if conditions are to improve. @ _Crime in the community is something that Worries us all,especially vandalism and burglary.,、,We must nip this social disease in the bud, before it gets out of hand.If elected, I will liaise with the police to ensure our villages are adequately covered so as to bring under control the alarming local crime rates.

Pauline _Munr0o Labour Party Candidate Pauline Munro is married to Andrew and is a teacher in a South Leicestershire Community College.She has lived in Kibworth for over fourteen years.Her three sons, Who have now left school, all attended local state schools:.

Pauline was a founder member of Kibworth Primary School Parents Association and also a LEA governor there.。 She Was an active member of the High School PTA before becoming a Parent Governor at the Robert Smyth Upper School.

She is a graduate of Leicester University where she gained a BA (Hons) as a mature student before training as a teacher. Her interest in schools and adult education culminated in her appointment as a respected Trainer for Leicestershire School Governors:.

Her interest in local issues has, until recently, covered Work as a Beauchamp Parish Councillor as well as a campaign organiser for a group of relatives fighting successfully for continued NHS long stay care for their elderly relatives in Leicestershire Psychiatric Hospitals.

Pauline ls very much in touch with daily happenings in the village, despite working full time. Her daily walks, accompanied by her dalmation dog Sophie, mean that she meets pPeople through the village. This has helped her to keep abreast of the current issues which face the village.

If elected for Kibworth, she would ensure that the voice of villagers would be heard, and not ignored,at District Council meetings, particularly in regard to planning matters and lssues. to do with village infrastructure.。 She certainly does not support the provision of 500 neW houses and she believes the District Plan for Kibworth is misguided and ill-conceived as it is based on the false assumption that Kibworth is on a“transport corridor“. The Conservative Government has shelved the much-needed Kibworth and Great Glen ByPasses and the concept of a new Railway Station, to be used by a majority of villagers daily,so to justify its existence, is unfortunately complete nonsense. These aspects,as a basis for expanding housing development, are without foundation and the plan is therefore flawed and totall1y Inappropriate.She believes that amaximum of 200 houses could be possible if facilities are also provided but they should, in her view, be low cost developments enabling local young People at the bottom of the housing ladder remain in the Village.Improved car parking facilities are an absolute necessity as is appropriate traffic calming for the village streets and improved local amenities accessible by young and old.

As a Labour Party candidate, she believes that it is essential that local people have their say in determination of policies at District level and she notes the Government「s aim to consistently erode the power of local authorities in fayvour of _non-elected,hand-picked “Quangos「: She recognises the failure of Conservative policies regarding Health, Law and Order the economy and employment、She notes the strength of feeling from local“middle England「voters and a strong desire for change. ndy 山 right Liberal DemocratCandidate I am 23 years old and Was raised and educated in Kibworth, where my parents still live today, although 【 recently moved to Market Harborough due to the lack of affordable housing in the village.I work for Leicester City Council in housing management and hayve,therefore,a good Working knowledge of all areas of local authorities.

At present the biggest issue concerning many Kibworth residents is the Draft Local Plan. This says that Kibworth has been earmarked for a development of over 500 houses in the next ten years. I believe, as an elected member, my role would,first and foremost,be to represent the views and opinions of Kibworth and Smeeton residents.

It is clear that the majority of local people do not want this scale of development in Kibworth. If elected, I will fight to change the Draft Local Plan so that this development is not imposed upon the village. Recent research Carried out by Harborough Liberal Democrats found that residents of Great Glen would be Prepared to consider a development of up to 700 houses on the Station Road Site. This would mean Kibworth having a much smaller number, of possibly less than 100 houses:.

However, it is important that people do not lose sight of the fact that, although the Draft Local Plan is an issue of very great importance, this will probably be resolved in the coming months. There are always other on-going matters that need to be addressed and Kibworth and Smeeton will need an effective Councillor to represent them over the next four years.

axd District Dear Editor @ Last _month「s _Chronicle again concentrated heavily on the draft local Plan issues.One of your letter writers Was Parish Councillor Peter Burfoot whose letter sadlIy contained one or two inaccuracies regarding my position in this matter and my actions to date.、My initial thought ˇ_was “that “this ˇ_was “an electioneering letter on Peter「s own behalf or for one of his friends: If Peter does choose to stand for the District Council then I wish him the best of Iluck!

At the risk of repeating myself; I voted for 200 fewer houses for Kibworth due to the fact that the only other option Proposed by district Council Officers and Supported by Members in the last few months was for 750 houses.

I have held the view for my four years as a Conservative District Councillor that Kibworth should have No More Housing.

I have consistently made this clear to the People I represent and those at Council.

Indeed,you will recall my letter in the December 1993 edition of the Chronicle in which I highlighted the dangers ahead for Kibworth following the release of the County Council「s Structure plan. I said then that substantial development for Kibworth could follow in the wake of the County strategy and I appealed to your Teaders for their comments to me if they were Perhaps surprisingly, I received only one letter - from a Beauchamp resident,, who expressed the worries that most of us now fee1l more acutely. I did not receive a letter from Peter Burfoot although, to be fair, I cannot recall if he had moved into Kibworth at that time: I visited the Keep Kibworth Rural campaign last Saturday and found the exhibition and their initiative extremely Many other residents attended and KKR has managed to draW local People together who wish to minimise future development in Kibworth and Smeeton not just for the duration of the new District Plan but,beyond. I share that aim and would appeal to Councillor Burfoot and others to ensure that our mutual desire to look after the welfare of our villages is orchestrated together, rather than weakening our effort by in-fighting and back-biting.

Our preferred option for the number of new houses in Kibworth should be ZERO:; it is a number that I have always aimed for and I know that others agree.

Last Saturday, 24 March, Keep Kibworth Rural held an exhibition to bring villagers up-to-date with the discussions about the pProposed development plan. Now the downstairs, used by all ages, is undergoing plumbing work with the introduction of additional toilet and washing areas and there is to be fresh lighting installed,Externally the building has to abide _by the regulations appropriate to the conservation area which includes the Methodist premises, but extended negotiations and planning Permissions have now been finalised so that upper and lower windows can be Teplaced.

St Wilfrid「s & Christ Church Parishioners at St Wilfrid「s Kibworth and Christ Church Smeeton Westerby will be focusing in, May and June, on putting their finances on a sound basis to face what is left of the 1990s and be ready to go forward into the 21st century.。 Both Parochial Church Councils have prepared detailed budgets of their needs through until 1999 and a funding programme, encompassing both Parishes, is shortly to be launched to ensure these needs are programmes start with Funding services held in each Parish;: Smeeton Westerby will hold the first of these on Sunday 14 May at 6.30 pm at Christ Church at which the preacher will be Canon D Goodman,、the Director of Education, a frequent and popular visitor to the Benefice. A few days after the services each PCC will host a Parish Supper at which the needs of the Churches and their eXpectations will _be explained to everyone. Smeeton Westerby「s supper will be held at the Village Hall, Smeeton, at 7.30_pm _on Friday 2 “June and Parishioners who attend will hear an address by Philip Frost,Treasurer at Gilmorton Church. Kibworth will hold their supper on Saturday 3 June at the Primary School. Hillcrest Avenue, and that function will be addressed by the Very Rev Derek Hole. the Provost of Leicester.

Kibworth will also host a luncheon at 12.30 pm on Sunday 4 June in the Church Hall to cater for people who prefer to attend that time.、This lunch will also be addressed by the Provost Leicester.

During a three week period after these functions, teams of visitors, from each Parish., will be visiting all those who have a link with each church.The visitors aim is to seek help in providing the financial resources needed to support their churchesrespective ministry forthe rest「of the decade.、St Wilfrid「s aim is to produce an overall total of f43.000 each year whilst Christ Church Smeeton「s target is 11,000. St. Wistan Wistow On 4 June 1645 King Charles I honoured his loyal supporter, Sir Richard Halford, by visiting Wistow.、 The room where he slept still bears his name.Ten days. later,after the fateful Battle of Naseby, the King and his nephew,Prince Rupert of the Rhine, stopped briefly at Wistow to take fresh horses on their flight to Leicester.

St John the Baptist This year「s Spring Fayre at Kings MNorton is to form part of the efforts which, Parishioners hope, will achieve their fund raising target of 100,000 originally required for argent repairs to their historic church of St John the Baptist. Fund raising has been in operation for several years now and much of the work has already been completedThe final stages are to include redecoration, treatment of interior woodweork and restoration,both of the unique wrought iron churchyard gate and flight of stone steps, and also of two elaborate monaments within the churchyard. Already work to the roof, masonry、floors. drainage and windows has been completedAs in previous years., the Spring Fayre on 14 May has been planned to provide six hours of entertainment for all the family, starting at 1100 am. when the fine Peal of eight bells w训 be rung to signify the opening of the event Throushout the day there will be entertainments for young and old,with hot and cold refreshments provided.

Events planned include a bouncy castle, train rides、vintage Cars and tractors, carriage driving (successfully introduced in 1994), Morris Dancing、 horse shoeing and poultry dressing- 4 dog show and, hopefully、sun dos display are planned for the afternoon、 whilst a noted local band will add to the flayvour.、 Stalls Planned will inclede bedding and other Plants, locally baked cakes and produce, second hand clothing and books, bric-abrac,pottery and wine tasting. 2 Bird of Harcourt Road, Jenny Kibworth Beauchamp has yet another lst Choice Show Champion.

Her four year old Flat Coated Retriever 丨enny Bird bitch Callie (Shiredale Magic Touch) was judged Best of Breed from an entry of 5 如4Flat Coated Retrievers. 标 and Callie Jenny bred Callie herself. Callie「s mother _Cleo _(Show _Champion Wizardwood Black Magic of Shiredale) was bred in Kibworth from a bitch belonging to some friends. And Cleo「s father (Champion Shargleam Sparrow Hawk) was judged Best in Breed at Crufts in 1983. .

When Jenny married Mike in 1971 they had Irish Setters.。 However,Mike wanted a shooting dog and purchased, from Pat Chapman at Coleorton who bred the Shargleam strain, a puppy called Scott (Shargleam Sparrow Hawk). Scott was their 《first Flat Coated Retriever and he was Cleo「s father, Callie「s grandfather.

At the moment,she has four dogs, Callie, Cleo, Storm (who belonged to Pat Chapman - who sadly died in May 1993 and left Storm to Jenny) and Amy (who was a present from David Warner of Wibtoft on the death of Scottb, who died in 1988.。 Scott was Jenny「“s very own special and most important dog).、Jenny has now been breeding dogs for 23 years and Flat Coated Retrievers for 16 years she is now into her third generation of champions.

Callie will be mated in May but, Jenny hastens to add, all her prospective puppies are sold already, some abroad - and that some people have been on the waiting list for these puppies for two years! She also mentioned that she could have sold Callie and her,as yet unborn puppies,many times over at Crufts.

I asked Jenny how she trained her D 加 dogs for the show ring and was surprised 7 2 申 一 k 【 庞口 1 to learn that she doesn“t.

s Kibworth Fire Station lost one of its longest serving members on 31 March 1995, when John Wilford retired as a Leading Fire Fighter (LLF - Number 1372) after 29 years service. John was Promoted to this position on 1 August 1983 - 12 years ago.。 He was the Second in _Command at the ˇFire Station, responsible for men, drills, office work and being in charge of the pump. s John,who lives in Harcourt Road, Kibworth Beauchamp,was born in Manchester Cottages in Great Glen.、His father (born in Debdale) worked on the railway for 25 years as a plate layer and also looked after the railway line. His mother was born in Station Hollow, Kibworth Beauchamp and John was one of eight children - four boys and four girls. s John married Pam Deacon 30 March 1964, having met her at the Saturday MNight Dance at the Kibworth Village Hall, and they moved to Halford Street.、They now have three children (Michelle, Lesley and Tina), and six grandsons. s He started his working life with John Bull Rubber in Leicester and then moved to Bedford Granulating (who recycled Plastic) on the site of the former Gas Works in Kibworth Beauchamp. John remembers there were two gasometers in the grounds at that time. This company was taken over by Coba, who also recycle plastic,、 and are now world famous for their Aeromat matting. This means that, on 9 August 1995, John will have worked on the same site for 30 years and he would like to take this opportunity to thank Tony Cooke of Coba, who allows him to leave work to respond to a call from the Fire Station. s ]John「“s introduction to the Fire Service wWas rather dramatic,In April 1966, Pam lit the fire in Halford Road and the chimney went up in flames. When John arrived home at lunchtime、he found the fire engine outside his house and the firemen inside. After putting out the fire they Proceeded to do a recruitment drive - and John officially joined the Fire Service on 10 June 1966.At that time it was known as the Leicestershire and Rutland Fire Service,which then _became the Leicestershire Fire Service, and is now the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service. s The original document stated that he should: “attend the “Fire Station at Kibworth with all possible speed and on all occasions within ten minutes of the call bells or siren being operated.....subject to fulfilment of all the conditions, you will be Paid the standard retaining fee of f65 per annum by quarterly instalments in arrear.

In addition a turn-out fee of 23/- will be pPaid to you on each occasion of a fire or other occurrence. An attendance fee of 23/3 will be paid to you when you attend at the Station in response to a call within the time specified.““ John says “The call out bell was placed at the top of our stairs and, at night, we had to put a beer mat in between the gong and the bell so as not to wake the children - we now have bleeperst「“

This wWas both a sad and happy occasion for John.

The end of 29 years association with the Fire Service _combined _with the attendance and good wishes of so many of his colleagues and friends. s Amongst those attending were John「s family and friends,Mr Norman Dickinson (Chief Fire Officer of Leicestershire),Mr Nige1l Campion (Assistant Chief Fire Officer),Mr Nick Kirby (Divisional Officer),Mr Ian Lomas (Divisional Commander Operational Support),Mr John Freeman (Divisional Officer) and Mr Graham Norman (Assistant Divisional Officer). The crew from Kibworth were there in full strength,together with representatives from the Stations at Billesdon,Market Harborough,Wigston and Corby. se John “_would like _to“take “this opportunity to thank everyone for the numerous gifts he received,which included a framed certificate from the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service signed and presented by the Chief Fire Officer, a large framed print of Weston「s “Men of Fire“presented by Station 35 (Kibworth), cut glass brandy glasses from Station 31 (Wigston), a cheque from the Chief Fire Officer,gift yvouchers from Station 36 (Market Harborough), a framed Photograph from the Divisional Officer Operations Support and two bronze sculptures, one from Pam and one from his daughters and their families,Pam was also Presented with a floral tribute from the Kibworth crew.、There was also a cake pPhotograph in the next issue of the Chronicle! s John「s last fire call was Thursday 30 March, to a gas explosion in a house in Market Harborough. He returned home just after midnight - after handing in his kit and his bleep! s We all wish John a long and happy retirement and are sure, knowing him, that it won“t be long before he is involyved with another activity - which, again,we are sure will also be to the benefit of all. s Thank you John, from us all.

Ivan Deacon, the father of his wife Pam,commenced working for the Auxiliary Fire Service of the Market Harborough Rural District Council during the war、At this time, the Fire Station was on the site of the present Mercury News Shop in Kibworth Beauchamp-.

Ivan joined as an AuXxiliary Fireman on 1 August 1940, and continued to serve for the neXt 14 years.

Pam has kindly loaned the Chronicle a Photograph of the Fire Crew taken before the end of the war and would be grateful (as would we all)) if any readers could supply the missing names. Ivan is the third from the left on the back IToW.

Preparations are well under way to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the ending of the war in Europe. On Monday 8 May at 8.30 pm,the East Langton Parish Council, who received a letter from the Lord Lieutenant of

Leicestershire, will be lighting a beacon on the Hanbury School playing field、This event, with it「s historical connections, will be taking place throughout the country the lighting of beacons was the quickest way to warn the country of an invasion! .

The lighting will be preceeded by a Thanksgiving Service in St Peter「s Church,Church Langton at 7.45 pm.

Members of the congregation will then proceed to the playing fields to join villagers「already at the beacon for a two minute silence. Once the lighting has taken place, the church bells will ring out: this event is timed to coincide with similar events all over the country.

On Sunday 7 May at 10.30 am in St Peter「s Church, Church Langton, there will be a special Celebratory Family Service led by the young people of the will include a contingent of Boys Brigade from Leeds, who will be staying at the Hanbury Centre.、After the service, there will be a procession to the village green, where young people will lay posies of flowers around the War memorial.

Working closely with members of the Sports Hall Specification Committee and the Finance Committee, Clive has applied for planning permission from Leicestershire County Council The computer generated imasge shown above is how the hall will look.、The hall and associated lower building have been designed in the style of the existing school buildings and will broadly use the same materials so that it all blends in together.

The application was taken to the planning committee at the LCC in March who deferred their decision because of the problem of access to Smeeton Road、A site visit is to be held on the 7 April and the matter rediscussed on the 13 April With Iluck we should receive formal planning approval in writing around the 20 April.

Once we have permission we can then apply to the Lottery Sports Fund for money to assist us in meeting the shortfall in funds to build the Sports Hall We are confident that our project fits the parameters set by the Sports Council who are running the Fund and that a cheque will be forthcoming.

We are also actively seeking sponsorship from local firms and are very pleased with their support and their promises to assist as much as possibleMNational firms who are directly Interested in sport and young people are also being targeted with a view to them sponsoring us or taking up advertising space in the hall. We unanimously decided that we would not approach firms in the tobacco industry.

Everyone in the Sports Hall team remain confident that the project will succeed. It may not be built for Autumn 1996 but we should open during the winter.、The big fund raiser for the village is the Carnival which looks like it will be a great event with a vast array of stalls and displays. In the next issue of the Chronicle we hope to bring you more news on the planning permission and the fund raising.

April 1995 KEEP KIBWORTH RURAL As most of you know,we held an eXhibition at the Community Centre on Smeeton Road on Saturday 25th March.

Our MP,Edward Garnier,visited in the morning and stayed for over one hour.

He was very interested in the display and talked to several visitors about their concerns regarding the Local Plan. Mr Garnier agrees that rural communities such as Kibworth should not have to suffer the scale of development which is proposed in the Plan, and that the allocation for the district of housing units should be Tearranged more sympathetically to reflect best use _of currently available infrastructure.

The turnout for the exhibition was eXxcellent and many people showed a keen interest in Keep Kibworth Rural.

We received over #50 in donations and several offers of help delivering and collecting leaflets.Our aim is to have at least one distributor for each street, so if you:re prepared to deliver to your own street please get in touch.Also on display at the exhibition was an example of the Car stickers which are now on sale at several shops in the village.、A bargain at 30p (min) with all proceeds going to KKR fighting fund.

We had an incredible response to our survey,with over 2,100 replies received by the weekend of the exhibition. Talking to Alan Worthingtom, Head of IT at Kibworth High School, it soon became clear how far reaching had been the changes in the subject since its early days on the time-table as Computer BEducation.、 This is technology that has rapidly advanced and one which has a firm place in the High School curriculum.

The school is equipped with a Network system, using Nimbus, which has been built up over the past few years but also has begun to move away to stand alone equipment which can be used within or independently of the Network.、Several departments at the school are equipped with computers, the school owning some 45 in all Alan feels that, quite apart from the cost involved, to rely on a network system can bring everything to a halt should a fault develop.、 It takes time for repair and children are unoccupied, whereas the gradual move to a dual system has provided the advantages of Network plus the continual availability of stand alones, even. When the Network might be experiencing hiccups:.

The more immediate aim of the department is to get more computers into subject areas, whilst at the same time improving the printing system within the ITroom.

The present timetabling gives all pupils opportunity in the Computer Room, starting with 20 hours a year in Year 7 When pupils are given an introduction to software.Whilst there is less time in Year 8 and 9, all pupils do attend and there is a growing number using the equipment out of school hours.

A junior class after school and three evening classes are well supported.

The school office is networked, using BRmail and Internet, and Alan acts a8 Systems Manager.、 Several other subjects use the technology,among them English,History,Sciences and Maths.、 Design makes use of the creative aspects on screen, Music using Yamaha synthesizers to store all work on disk and careers programs are in full USe. It is alive and kicking and the rate of change rapid. It is encouraging to know the local secondary school is on the target with its provision.

RAMBLING NOTES March continued with its great variations in temperature but, when the Kibworth Rambling Group met for the last walk of the Winter programme,they couldn“t have wished for a nicer morning.

The sun was shining in a clear blue sky as Richard Darke set off with a very large party on his ramble from Hallaton across the fields to the Goadby Care still needed to be taken crossing stiles, and by muddy gateWways,and the water wWas rushing across the ford on the road making the group thankful there was a bridge crossing. It was a nice surprise when they turned at the crossroads onto the bridleway towards Cranoe to find it was not as muddy as they expected、The wind blowing across the ridge had done its job. The air was so clear they were able to view the countryside for miles around and, when they reached the open fields, everyone had that feel good factor.

The leader suggested that someone might like to do a Julie Andrews version of the Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music, but there were no takers - by this time thoughts were on a coffee break. The leader kindly obliged them with a nice sheltered place at Cranoe.On the return to Hallaton the clouds started to roll in, some very dark and threatening, but their Iuck held and the party were back inside the Bewicke Arns by the time the snow showers arrived.

Keith Davies「 walk, also from Hallaton, the first of the Summer programme Was greeted with warmer weather.、The group walked across the fields and bridleway towards Keythorpe Hill Farm and back by Keythorpe Lodge Farm.The baa-ing of the lambs in the fields, the white blossom and the green now showing in the hedgerows, presented a different aspect to the countryside from a few weeks ago, especially down by the ford where the gorse on the hillside made a beautiful splash of colour. A stop to look at the castle mound was a must on the Way back to the ducks and duck pond at the Fox Inn, where we arrived at the same time as the “_Leicester for refreshment, making a busy time for the landlord with a pub full of ramblers.

The Annual General Meeting of the society was held at the Kibworth Community Centre on Thursday 16 March. Officers and Committee Members of the Society agreed to stand for a further term of office, with the exception of Social Secretary,Mr Peter Kirby, because of his other outside commitments for charity.、Mr Kirby was thanked for his stalwart efforts on behalf of the Society and Mrs Nan Whiteway agreed to take up the position vacated.

The meeting at the KCC on 29 March brought a welcome return visit to well known local artist and fellow Member Mr Hugh Collinson, MA ARCA FSAE.、 Mr Collinson「s talk entitled “The Pleasures of Heraldic Art“ was indeed a great pleasure for the many members attending the meeting, accompanied, as it was, by many slides of noble families「“seats, churches, and even pub signs,wWhilst guiding us through the derivation of the varlous coats-of-arms,crowns and coronets、It made us all so aware of our heritage and eager to learn more.

Refreshments Were served and 洁 donations taken for CARE.

On Thursday 23 March, The Langtons Womens Institute held a dinner in the Hanbury Hall at Church Langton to commemorate their 7Sth Anniversary、To help celebrate the event,the Institute invited two members from each of the Institutes in the Welland Valley. Special guests invited included Barbara Gill, the County Chairman of the WI,Freda Williams,also of the County WI Federation,Mary Sanderson,Group Secretary, and other guests.

Mrs Hilda Allen of West Langtom, a member of The Langtons WI,cut the anniversary cake.、After dinner, members wWere entertained by the Leicester Ladies Barber Shop Quartet: Also on display were the first minutes book, photographs and a scrap book of past events, records and other memorabilia.

President of The Langtons WI,Mary Vernon,welcomes those interested in joining the WI to come along to their meetings which take place at The Hanbury Institute on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.30 pm.Alternatively, they could come along to the Spring Fayre which is being held in conjunction with the Autumn Club at Tur Langton Village Hall on Saturday 29 April at 2.00 pm.

F0HXT0N 匹 After spending his early life living and working in London, Harry Forbes began looking for a rural home for his wife and young family that could double as a working studio。 He found the ideal spot in Foxton village 11 years ago in the Old Chapel.

Following many years of renovation and conversion the beautiful building is now a bustling family home with Harry「s studio and workshop occupying half the space.

The atmosphere is striking - a unique mixture of calmness and creativity.、 As you climb the wooden staircase Harry「s work is displayed all around: on the walls, suspended from the ceiling, an unfinished piece on the huge table drawing you further in; it「s a place where fantasy mingles with reality in bursts of colourful vibrancy.

In the early years, Harry worked as a Carpentry Supervisor at the Shangton Care Village,eventually leaving to concentrate 《full-time _on his art.

Nowadays,Harry exhibits mainly in London, but recently showed his work at The City Gallery in Leicester.、 FHarry describes his pieces as contemporary. “1 use a range of media, but I enjoy Wood,: metal and paint. I get my inspiration from 。 many things; often it“s just the shape of an interesting piece and then I start thinking how I can accommodate I remember going to the Tate Gallery when I was very young and finding the postWar Surrealist work so exciting - such fun.

People like Magritte - particularly his way of juxtaposing objects with a completely 8 different meaning.“ Harry offers art classes for up to eight People in the inspiring chapel atmosphere, “You get a marvellous cross-fertilisation with two or three people sitting around the table doing a still-life study“he says“ teach classes in carpentry,sculpture and welding,mainly to people who enjoyed art at school,but took it no further.“ The sheer joy people get from the self-expression of a piece and the discovery that they actually can do it is very rewardingPupils from Foxton School have recently visited The Chapel for a first hand experience of a Working studio.

Harry introduced the children to sculpture and,using thin pieces of a polystyrene material, they made“something emphatic quite quickIy,creating sculptures that were big and original.This is an area of work Harry finds particularly fulfilling and he welcomes the opportunity of working with other schools and colleges in the district.

There was a very poor attendance at the Annual General Meeting of the Village Hall Committee held on 9 March, Mr Doyle, the Chairman,stated that extensive work had been carried out on the exterior of the Hall, : Financially,the year had been successful.

Mr Doyle resigned as Chairman, and it was stated that a new Chairman would be appointed from the existing Committee.

New members are required for the Committee,and anyone interested in joining should contact any member of the Committee.

As there were no new nominations, the following were re-elected: Messrs Arthur, Doyle,Jarvis, Jackson:; Treasurer - Mr MN Kilpatrick; Secretary - Mrs J White.

Residents of Stonton Wyville were Proud to haye one of their number running in the Nutrasweet London Marathon on 2 April.

The last issue of the Journal suggests that a Souvenir Number with photographs of every member of His Majesty「s Forces (both men and women) should be reproduced.

Did this ever happen2 It was「 during a Church Council meeting in February 1940 that Leslie Clarke of Smeeton Road, asked if anything had or was being contemplated with a view to keeping in contact with the boys who had joined and would be joining H.M. Forces?“ A simple question, and, hey prestol the Kibworth News was born and, naturally, Leslie Clarke, became the Editor. The first news sheet was sent to those few,about 28,who were then serving in HU.M.Forces. This one page gradually grew into many pages of news from Kibworth and surrounding villages, read in almost every corner of the globe.

5 YEARS The new Pelican crossing on High Street, Kibworth Beauchamp, came into operation at 11 am on Thursday 15 March.

David Still, Headmaster of Kibworth High School, looks favourably on the new crossing and says it is“working well“.

Pupils have been instructed how to use the Pelican crossing. Mr Still would like to see guard railing installed as a safety measure.

Local shopkeepers are pleased to see the crossing and the subsequent slowing down of traffic, and they say as a rule children are using the crossing correctly.

PLAYSCHEME 1995 31JULY TO 4AUGUST This year「s playscheme will be organised by Dirne Spearing and myself.

For newcomers to the village and those who have not used Playscheme before, the event is held at the Kibworth Community Centre running from 9.30 am to 12.00 noon daily with a half hour break, where refreshments are available free.

Over 300 children between the ages of five and fourteen attend daily, supervised entirely by volunteers. All help is greatly appreciated,、 Even if you do not have children attending the Playscheme, or are retired, or a bored teenager wondering what to do in your summer holidays please give me a ring - no offer of help will be turned down! A creche run by Carole Norton will be available to all helpers.

This year「s activities will include a Magic workshop and First Aid workshop - some taking place in the afternoons.

Alltheoldfavourites willbe there,including the cartoonist, cookery, sweet making, badge making and dried flowers.

This year we hope to be running a five-aside football and a netball tournament, with the finals being held at the Kibworth Carnival. Both of these tournaments will be open to boys and girls.

Basketball and crazy sports are also on offer.

Many of the activities are free, with the remainder being available at a small charge.、The entrance fee will be 60 pence daily.

All the children are registered with contact numbers, so do look out for the registration forms in the Chronicle.

funds. This was in spite of the previous evening「s distraction of the District Cub Quiz the night before. The Langtons Cub pack came a close third、 Also the Syd Bast Cup Football Tournament for small primary schools held on the same day as the Fayre,deprived the 1st Langtons _Cubs “_of those _boys representing their schools.

Those boys who could attend came along ready to work,not on1y setting uhp, but also helping to run the stalls.The weather was pleasant and there was a steady stream of friends, relatives and well-wishers to support the event, with bargains to be had at the stalls, plus fun with the various guessing games and other attractions.

Special thanks are due to Pack Chairman Ian Tallett, and his wife Jane, for their invaluable assistance. A big thank you to all the boys, leaders and supporters for their contribution.

NORTHUMBERLAND FIELD TRIP On Sunday morning 2 April 1995 Smeeton Road was choc-a-block,as parents delivered 11 and 12 year olds for the 9.00 am departure of the annual field study trip to Northumberland,by Kibworth High School. Far from being a holiday,this has become a well established part of the humanities course at the school and all visits and activities are associated with some follow-up work, both during the week away and back at school in the new term. One of the largest number of pupils (around 140) left in coaches with a large body of staff, some parents and helpers for the six days away.、 All stay at a large hotel which specially caters for educational visits. It is good to Know that Kibworth has maintained a high reputation for good behaviour and is always welcome with the staff there.

A MUSICAL DIARY Around 60 pupils of the High School performed, to good attendances, music associated with the times of Samual Pepys, the seventeenth century diarist.

Diary extracts were read by Mr Peter Fearon, Head of History at the School, and the School Orchestra and Choir provided instrumental and vocal accompaniment.。 All were in costume and the theatrical lighting, not used since

1995 Kibworth Drama Group moved to Great Glen, was in perfect condition. The Studio is in its second year as home of the School「s Music Department: ˇ The old costume and scenery stores, now converted and refurbished as practice rooms, will be housing a visiting examiner from the Royal Schools of Music during the first week of May. Pupils of the school will be joined by pupils from other schools and candidates entered by private teachers.、Despite the increasing entry fees for exams they remain as popular as ever and the School strongly encourages those with the extra talent to aim for these qualifications, rather than just playing for pleasure.

AN ECGG-CELLENT TREATY A burst of summer sunshine coaxed nigh on 200 pupils, parents, friends and grandparents to the Kibworth C of B Primary School Easter Treasure Hunt.

The hugely successful event was held on Sunday 2 April Starting at the school, families trailed their way around the village searching for clues and answers to questions, not forgetting to collect articles on the WwayOn returning to the school, sun baked participants were treated to a welcome cup of tea and cakes, While earnest members of the PTA scrutinised the answer sheets to find the winners. As all the children tucked into their cream eggs a total off190 was raised, which will be put to good use in providing extra benefits for all the pupils at the school, The Iucky winners were: (D) Mrs Laithwaite & family.

JUNGSHIN TAEKWON-DO, KIBWORTH Local youngsteL Craig Murray (10) gained a Black Belt in Taekwon-do at a grading examination held on Sunday 26 March. Ten students took the grading, comprising of six juniors and four seniors.

Two of the seniors passed, one gaining second degree status, while only Craig Murray passed in the junior section.

The grading comprised of patterns, which are set movements to simulate attack and defence techniques against imaginary opponents, self defence techniques to escape from grabs, strangles etc, sparring one on to one and two on to one.、 Finally the power test,which includes the seniors breaking house bricks and the juniors breaking piranah pine boards.

The grading lasted all morning and, when the points were added together for all the disciplines, three out of the ten students had passed The others must train for another six months and try again.

We are always looking for neW members to train at the village hall in Kibworth on Mondays and Thursdays at 7.00 pm.

Kibworth Kibworth people,especially,will read the following letter with great interest: To tRe 丁Qitor, Sir, Since I left Bngland 15 years ago I have not met many people from the Market Harborough district but, through the kindness of an aunt at Fleckney, I have been able to keep up with news of Kibworth and Kibworthians through the medium of your paper, Which arrives regularlySince the arrival of the British Fleet in the Pacific, it has been my privilege to contact four of the Kibworth boys and entertain three of them,these being Ray Timson, Tom Holyoak and Jack Peberdy. The other one received my letter too late, but has written saying that next time in port he will call He is Horace Mawby.

Ray Timson is a nephew. He spent Christmas with us and many days and nights during his long stay in port, and it was during conversation with him that we learned that Tom Was 0n another ship and had met in Ceylon and as I live where I can see all ships come in, and saW several of a certain type, I took a risk hoping Tom「s ship would be in.、 It was, and Tom Was out to see us within 24 hours. He came several times and spent a week-end with, U8.

Jack Peberdy had written to his mother for our address, and on receiving that news I wrote to him in the hope that he had not yet reached Sydney, but he had and came out the next day and several other times.

Seeing these young men has made us in Sydney realise what England is doing in this war and I hope by the time you receive this letter Grermany will be out of the war,and the Japs well on the way to defeat, and these boys will soon be back in their beloved village.

We are only sorry we can「t put 0n a Test match at Sydney for them,and then they would see what fun we pommies get at such matches.

Kibworth and Smeeton Community Guild Kibworth is noted for its dramatic productions,Originally the talent Was drawn from members of the Old Grammarians Which very successful society never failed in the many and varied plays produced.、Now, still with their help, the productions are presented by the Dramatic Section of the Kibworth and Smeeton Community Guild thereby providing opportunities fortalent finding, outside the scope of the _Old Grammarians.

I have had the privilege of witnessing these productions over a long period and must confess in the selection of Ian Hay「s “Little Ladyship:,Which Was performed in the Village Hall on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last, the Guild has shown boldness as well as discernment in its choice.、Bold in choosing a play with twenty performers and discerning because this delightful comedy gave ample opportunity of providing talent within the Community.

The success of the play depends on good team work, sound production and ready and willing assistance back stage.

In the Green Room, where the cast Were “making up“ anticipation combined with, expectation was discernible on every face - but no anxiety. Everyone Was happy and keen - surely a good auguIy at the commencement _of “_any performance.

Our correspondent was happy to note the hall was crowded、Throughout the play the enthusiastic audience was held completely enthralled.

I had heard the official news of the German capitulation while at breakfast in the Wardroom of my「 Destroyer, H M S Icarus, in which I was serving as MNavigating Officer,、We were on passage, unaccompanied for once,to Liverpool from Portsmouth, where, some time earlier, we had taken the sole survivor of a Uboat we had sunk, after that same U-boat had torpedoed and sunk a small cargoship, the Straggler from an equally small eastbound conyoy, just off Wolf Rock, near Land「s End、On receiving the signal of the attack on the convoy,the Senior Officer of our Support Group, in H M S Havelock, had ordered Icarus to detach, and proceed at maximum prudent speed to investigate.

But back to 8 May - I had been on the bridge earlier that morning to“see「,the ship safely round the corner from the Lizard to Pendeen and settled on her new north-east leg, and, when passing Wolf Rock, I had reflected that if peace had come just a few weeks earlier, some 70 or so men, whose bodies rested fathoms deep almost beneath that very spot, would still have been alive, since it was obvious that the War in Europe was over.

Over breakfast it became apparent that the news of the victory had been received with a curious mixture of elated relief and anticlimax, there were, of course, smiles and handshakes and even a few cheers from the Mess-decks for「ard,but no gloating, no wild celebrating. There were a few conjectures about the future: would we shortly find ourselves bound for the Far East, where some remnants of the once mighty Japanese fleet were still operating, might we be“paid off“and dispersed to other ships or what2 Whatever the future,the present took Precedence.After breakfast and a quick shave I returned to the bridge for my usual discussion with the Captain, Lieut.

The day finished with Dinner, rounded off this time in honour of the occasion by Passing the Port「,a practice never Previously observed unless we were“off watch“ and in harbour - and the“Troops「 had already“Spliced the Mainbrace「 earlier at“Up Spirits「.

The expectant gaggle of U-boats never materialised so for six days we swung around our anchor, alone and undisturbed, with only occasional glimpses of the little town crouching beneath the hills,and sharing the same soaking drizzle and skeins of mist which prevailed that week.

Then it was“Up Anchor「, and round the corner to Liverpool.

And the paper-knife2 I kept it, and used it, for about 20 years, until it snapped at the hilt, and eventually I mislaid it、 I wish I had it now, as a tangible reminder of that momentous day.、MNo matter, I can still remember it well enough to draw it, and IT“m sure that because I made it on that Particular date, the salient details of the Day itself - or, at least, many of them somehow have been impressed in my memory.

I hope it may continue so.
