the werk.campus is the link between the areas of craftsmanship, education and assembly. rr is intended to put these themes into interaction with each other and to facilitate communication between the various user groups. the traditional spatial sequence of the surrounding viennese craftsmen’s workshops serves as the conceptual and spatial basis. the reinterpretation of the sequence puts the werk.campus in harmony with the past, the context and the future - themes which are essential factors in building in the existing fabric. are essential factors.

Our cities are characterized by architectural structures from different eras. Some of these buildings are treasured, but others are hated. Against this background, the project deals with the renovation of a building from the 1970s in the heart of vienna. Reading the structure, appreciating its potential and the inherent beauty of the materiality of the existing building provides the basis for architectural intervention.

The building is nestled in between a steep hill covered with lush greenery to the west and the western wall of Albergo dei Poveri to the east. This odd and currently unused space gave inspiration for creating a form that is decisive in its direction and form. With the strong gesture of placing the building in this restricted form the movement and orientation of its surroundings are emphazised. Working, studying and living inbetween history and nature creates a unique environment for students, residents and visitors to enjoy.

social housing, port city architecture, building in existing context

amsterdam, netherlands

kilian schaffer

Designing for a port city of the future is only possible when having knowledge and expertise of already made interventions. the task of the project was redesigning the iconic kraanspoor building in amsterdam, while programming it with both an urban and a port infrastructure use. by combining the different typologies of social housing and a river cruise terminal and delicately organizing these completely different architectural typologies creates a unique spatial configuration while respecting and celebrating the existing structure in order to create a sustainable prototype for the port city of tomorrow.

By respecting the form and existing structure of the Kraanspor the new functions are layered horizontally, yet combined by views. While at the top there is privacy for the local residents, the central plaza is a public area for everyone.

The housing units are configured bz three different modules. bz stacking them on top of eachother an interesting spatial atmosphere is created, allowing a diverse mix of residents and easilz adaptable apartments.

The public playa is the heart of the project and connects locals, tourists, residents and visitors bz offering a wide varietz of different uses. it celebrates the concrete structure and offers views and connections into the the river cruise terminal.

Am Kempelenpark - alternative to demolion

refurbishment, urban redevelopment

vienna, austria

kilian schaffer

The work examines the former Siemens Campus in Vienna Favoriten as an example of how to deal with buildings from the 1960s-80s. On the basis of a comparison between preservation and new construction, a conversion strategy is developed that starts on three levels: Connection and development, adaptive floor plan and modular transformation. Targeted interventions are used to strengthen and further develop the urban and spatial qualities of the existing buildings in order to make sustainable use of their potential and thus develop an alternative to demolition.

The methodical approach of superimposition, expansion and targeted adaptation was applied in the working method and form of presentation. In this way, collages were created for all foyers on the basis of the many as-built photos taken during numerous excursions.

The modularity is particularly evident in the design of the building. In addition to the façade modules on the standard floors, the façade of the ground floor is also designed with modules. These fill four grid fields and thus stretch from column to column over the axial grid of 7.2 m. The upper end of the façade is formed by a parapet module made of exposed aggregate concrete.

modular composition of the existing

The aim is not to overhaul the modular façade system, but to respect the rhythm of the existing façade. It represents the starting point for the new modules and remains the most important reference point. The new modules are derived directly from the shape of the existing modules in order to embed them in the existing façade and not make them appear as foreign bodies. The façade is seen as an opportunity to improve the spatial atmosphere inside and at the same time to carry out the necessary structural and physical upgrading.
