THE PLACE FOR EVERYONE
Our Redondo Beach Clubhouse is welcoming and inclusive, a place where you can jump into friendly competition, incredibly active recreational pursuits, or simply enjoy the company of friends and family at our relaxing waterfront getaway.
KHYC is also the place to slow down and take in the breathtaking and often inspiring views of Santa Monica Bay, feel the salt spray from your seat on our decks and balconies, and toast another perfect sunset at the end of the day.
THE NO-YACHT-REQUIRED CLUB
King Harbor Yacht Club is a unique membership that offers unique experiences on and off the water — and boat ownership is not a requirement for KHYC membership.
OUR PURPOSE & MISSION
The official purpose of King Harbor Yacht Club is to organize, encourage and sponsor yachting and yacht racing in and about the waters of Southern California. The mission of KHYC is to encourage and support Members of all ages and skill levels to get involved through the Club’s many programs, events and fleet activities, serving on our committees and fleets, enjoying time on the water...and making new friends with every event and activity.
Members enjoy ‘right of first refusal’ for slips in King Harbor Marina — the fastest way to get a slip in King Harbor Marina.
We are one of only two yacht clubs in Southern California with views of the open ocean.
KHYC is a safe harbor port for vessels in distress. Under International Law, there is the policy of ‘safe harbor.’ That is, no port should be closed to a foreign vessel seeking shelter from a bad storm, equipment failure, or acts of God.
The Club has 155’ of guest dock space and welcomes cruisers from reciprocal yacht clubs sailing up and down the coast from Canada to Mexico and points beyond.
KHYC DISTINCTIONS
ADVENTURES ON THE WATER
KHYC is distinguished by an inclusive approach to what it means to be a yacht club, featuring a range of sailing, power and recreational boating programs, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking, fishing, travel...in fact, nearly any and every recreational activity that involves water, the surf, and the sea.
REGATTAS & TOURNAMENTS
Our enthusiasm for competition features KHYC’s unique blend of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Sailing Members take part in a year-round calendar of regattas, invitationals, championships, trips and other events.
Signature events include the Spinnaker Series, the Ken Hoover Opti Regatta, the Bud Gardiner Bowl (Cal 20’s), the Cure Cancer Cup Regatta, the famous King Harbor Race Weekend, the His and Hers double-handed series, and the Christmas Regatta. Many KHYC races also comprise parts of other area racing series, including the SoCal Yachting Association’s Midwinter Regatta, the Offshore Series and the Santa Monica Bay High Point Series.
An event that deserves its own highlight, the Santa Barbara to King Harbor offshore race has been a tradition between Santa Barbara YC and King Harbor YC since the early 1970s. The race spans 81 nautical miles and fields between 80 and 100 entries per year, with parties and hospitality at each respective club before and after the race.
THE CORINTHIAN SAILING SPIRIT
Corinthian Spirit is a mindset and attitude that’s defined by a helpful, social community, expressed in ways that include saying hello or having a quick chat while walking the dock, having happy hour on your boat, or helping out to prepare for Catalina. Even if you know nothing about boats, all the knowledge of other boaters is available. When something is broken, chances are great that someone on your dock has already figured out how to fix the problem and is willing to offer advice and help a fellow boater. That’s the Corinthian Spirit!
OUR FLEETS
Think of them as “clubs within the Club” — fleets are primary sources of programming, events and activities across the KHYC experience. There are sociallyfocused Fleets as well as the traditional racing, cruising and water-recreation groups. New Members are encouraged to join based on their interests, and experienced Members are likewise encouraged to lead their own Fleet.
LESSONS & INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL AGES
Whether you’re looking for sailing lessons for your young ones, or want to sail as an adult, KHYC hosts opportunities to participate in programs, learn to sail, or simply have fun! All introductory sailing classes are designed for those with no or little sailing experience, and follow-up courses are ideal for those that completed intro classes or who’ve spent time away from sailing and want to refresh their skills.
ACTIVE PROGRAMS FOR YOUNGER ONES
This is a rare place that inspires youth to disconnect from the digital world, engage in a variety of active on-the-water experiences, instills a lifelong love and respect for the ocean, and helps develop other important characteristics – like independence and self-sufficiency – going well beyond any traditional classroom setting.
GATEWAY TO THE PACIFIC — JUST DOWN THE STREET
Located at the end of Yacht Club Way in Redondo Beach, our Clubhouse and private dock are convenient to all of the South Bay. Our easy access to the open ocean also opens up access to the entire West Coast, Canada, Mexico...and points beyond.
FUN FOR ALL & ALL FOR FUN
A lively social scene has been a signature experience of our Club since the early days, and for every Clubhouse or dockside event or occasion, there’s also something new and exciting in the salt air...every day of the week!
SOUTH BAY’S SECRET RESTAURANT & BAR
KHYC is where yachting culture meets California cuisine. Enjoy patio dining featuring views that stretch past the Palos Verdes Peninsula, sample upscale favorites on the upper decks, or tuck into burgers and beer at the bar. Our staff is ready to stir up a Dark and Stormy, pour some favorite wine, and add flavor to any occasion needing culinary inspiration.
FROM CASUAL DINING TO CURATED EXPERIENCES
Whether it’s a casual and fun family lunch or slightly more formal dinner, crafted cocktails or fine wines to toast breathtaking sunset celebrations, the King Harbor Yacht Club culinary team ensures each meal is delicious, with culinary selections that bring full flavors to every plate. Our wine director is also passionate about finding great wines at reasonable prices, and regularly holds casual wine tastings to have Members consider new candidates for our extensive wine list.
TWO CLUBS BECOME ONE
Our history dates back to 1949 and the founding of the Win’ard Yacht Club by a group of yachtsmen who wanted a meeting place for local boaters. The Redondo Harbor Yacht Club was created in 1956 by outrigger sailing friends who were tired of traveling to Malibu to race. Both Win’ard and Redondo Harbor clubs specialized in yacht racing, and joined together to organize the “Great Amalgamation” that created the singular King Harbor Yacht Club in 1960, with the new Club facility formally dedicated in 1964.
These rich histories also include significant achievements for female sailors and enthusiasts, as well as junior sailing accomplishments. Our complete history also includes connections to Catalina Island, well-known local racers, and a fascinating perspective on coastal California events.
THE KING HARBOR YOUTH FOUNDATION
While KHYC is the Member-focused group best known to the Southern California yachting world, our nonprofit “sister” organization — the King Harbor Youth Foundation (KHYF) — is likewise a vital part of what we do here at the Club and in the community. In fact, most of the structured instructional programs are led and managed by this important and wellrespected nonprofit entity. Foundation programs play an important role in developing young sailing enthusiasts by promoting sailing education, race training, and instilling an appreciation for our oceans and the Corinthian Spirit by participants.
ENGAGING & SUPPORTING
THE COMMUNITY
We are a community of families, friends, fellow Members and staff, all united by a love of the water. We promote the challenges and pleasures of yachting and boating in all its forms, and the delight felt in spending time together. The KHYC club community naturally extends to the larger community outside our gates, and to other yacht clubs from right next door to up and down the California coast…and further still.
WE’RE ALL FRIENDS & NEIGHBORS HERE
“Pride in belonging” has always shaped this Club lifestyle, and it’s our mission to make KHYC a favorite place for Members and guests, by welcoming extraordinary people to our waterfront retreat.
