Kath-Kunni is a traditional construction technique that is predominantly found in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is a method of building using interlocking stones and wooden logs without the use of mortar.

The interlocking of the stones provides a natural locking system, which helps in withstanding earthquakes and other natural calamities. Additionally, the use of wood as a primary building material provides good insulation against the cold weather prevalent in the region.

The aim of the studio was to design an architect’s studio-cum-residence in Himachal Pradesh, India & incorporating vernacular construction techniques found in that region i.e. Kath Kunni.

Initial Conceptual sketches : The intention was to break the monotony by providing a valley/depression in the middle that acts as a buffer space between studio & residence. It would help in

Architecture relates to the spirit of a place and enables humans to integrate with the built environment physically, pshychologically and visually. Spiritual space is a specific environment that supports imagination, nourishes spiritual experience and truth.

The objective was to understand the relationship between spirituality and architecture and provide spiritual experience in both ways: one perceptible by the senses and one beyond senses. It is done by juxtaposing the 5 elements of nature into built form

The aim of the studio was to design a spiritual space for people of different backgrounds to tread on an inner journey of discovering their true being and being more human.

Form Development

Pyramids and Spirituality Meditation under pyramid is thrice more powerful and intense. Water = Purity Soul Chaotic World Spiritual Route Spiritual Route 01 Cleanses and absorbs harmful frequencies that damage health. 02 Energy does not get dissipated easily in a pyramid structure. 03 Earth Fire Water Air Space Power House for cosmic energy Mind Body Spirit

Project : Mr. Sethi’s Residence

Location : Dehradun, Vijay Park Internship

The design is an amalgamation of contemporary style with industrial design elements that represents the verticality of the structure and displays a strategic play of materials.

The site is in a relatively busier area of Dehradun called Vijay Park. The plot is at the junction of 2 lanes and gives a nice perspective view of house being a corner plot.

The geometry of the structure is achieved using elements of contemporary design style. Heavy masses protrude and get highlighted using different texture and shade of stone, while the verticality is provided through metal and glass members

The repitition of louvres in both the vertical elements create texture through materials and shadows, while the abstract pattern of metal members in the huge facade glazing gives an artistic touch to the house.

Project : Farzi Cafe

Location : Dehradun,Rajpur Road

The site is the most happening place of Dehradun called Rajpur road. Entire city seeks out for leisure in this area and ever since Farzi cafe opened, it has been the go-to spot for all.

The interaction of various metals on site is what made this project so intresting. It left us with an understanding of aesthetics through different materials and how to stretch boundaries to yield a better execution at site.

This project was the outcome of intresting conceptualization and smart material use on site. The concept revolved around the depiction of Dehradun and Mussoorie and beautiful interaction between valley and mountains.

The design aim was to gather the essence of the city's natural fabric and incorporate it into the physical form of the cafe

The design distinguishes both the floors of the cafe in such a way that the lower floor captures the essence of the valley and the upper floor depicts the beauty of the range itself. This aligns well with the topography of the area as well.

Pastel color palette used here reminds the user of the boundless skies and the emerald forests, with a hint of the depth and the darkness within them.

Bar canopy and the cabanas help us perceive the inherent verticality of the mountains

Emphasizes fluidic form for the design elements imitating natural elements of Dehradun.

Colors inspired by natural streams, trees, soil, and other earthy tones that are inherent in the valley.
