Community learning amidst urban sprawl
The ‘SECOND’ home Design Dissertation
Learning spaces are nucleus of growth and interaction. Spacemaking is a powerful tool to define the character and language of these spaces and transform them from learning machines to, epicenters of a thriving neighbourhood which act as ‘second’ homes for all. It is through an empathetic and humanist approach that these spaces should be carefully perceived and designed.
It is this amalgamation of an alternative community learning platform, evolved through sensorial design that is both dynamic, and engaging, that this thesis makes an attempt to explore. Another important aspect is the intricate translation of intangibles like cultural and traditional heritage, that characterize any site, into tangible experiences.
It is an ode to the very foundations of our personalities, where we spend most of our time, growing, interacting and adhering, learning spaces - OUR SECOND HOMES.
01
THE SITE
The site is located at the heart of the city of Vadodara, adjoining the Sur Sagar lake. Sitting at a backdrop of completely dense urban fabric is the Maharani Girl’s School, which is the selected site for intervention.
The region has been witness to Vadodara’s rich cultural and historical evolution into an educational city. The intervention aims at inculcating a sense of belongingness in a dense urban set up with negligible open space by taking up the case of this school, and transforming it into a multi-functional urban space.

Evolved block massing
The block massing evolved through the process of form derivation leads to the gradual formulation of the master layout which is in response to the contextual needs, whilst adding to sense of belonginess of the region which thus becomes a ‘second home’for multiple users alike.
02
CHANGING facets of the‘WALL’
Walls shall no longer just act as spatial dividers, instead they should be the ones blurring the boundaries and increase the degree of interconnectedness. Tapping on to varied aspects of nature, height, permeability to act as buffer zones, distance, and angles open up different facets of the ‘wall’!

Resultant hybrid model
Conceptual idea being depicted through model that showcases that everything can happen everywhere
In order to challenge the pedagogic thoughts of imparting education, we need to change the way in which we interact with learning environments. The above Conceptual model tryies to communicate the idea that there is no specific need of distinct zones where certain activities need to be performed, indeed everything can happen everywhere!
Deriving the FORM
Unfolding the typical classroom to widen its threshold
Interspacing formal zones with spill-out spaces
Creating a varying degree of enclosure through series of angled modules on both edges
Introducting break-out courts amidst two adjoining modules
The micro courts forming a larger cluster by introduction of larger connecting court
Introducing circular connectors at the threshold of the angled modules to facilitate a seamless turning radius, whilst giving distinct character to the stairwell by setting free from the rest of the campus.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Urban design studio Design program 9
It is a multifaceted space designed as a fulcrum of learning, interaction and relaxation for the public, helping them break free from the mundanity of their lives.‘The Melange’ is a unique culmination of an urban haat and a Youthscape, that yields a space that can be utilised by all. It provides a platform to promote public gathering and interaction, that adds a valuable touch to the otherwise ‘life-less’ atmosphere in and around the sector, reviving the lost sense of neighbourhood.

The idea was to design a space that is completely free flowing in nature and lifted up at different levels. Twisted brick piers with concrete pergolas act as a passive method of shading, as well as structural support.
The nursery and gym are designed as playful interactive spaces as reflected in their user. They are interconnected domes, with modulating ramp acting as a wrap around.

Housing studio
Design program 7
PROGRAM APPROACH
Total Site area: 20,700 sq.m The brief was to design a campus as an extension to D.C Patel School of Architecture. The requirements included housing for design students, faculty, helping staff, along with a guest house and on-campus cafeteria.
The basic idea was to inculcate the essence of the adjoining architecture college and develop a campus following the lines of Utilitarian architecture with user-centric and passive methods of sustainability. Developing an urban maze by the interlocking of linear masses with height variations, interfaced with several courtyards and landscape elements, was the crux of the approach.

FACULTY HOUSING
The Faculty housing is predominantly divide into two building blocks, connected with each other by the landings of the central staircase core designed. Green terraces have been provided above the penthouse apartments which are at a strategic location, so as to overlook the entire site. the facade has been built by a combination of brick, concrete, and metal frames juxtaposed with each other.

PODIUM WITH DOUBLE HEIGHTED SECONDARY AMENITIES
Secondary amenities like the library, gym, community lounge, and A.V room have been provided as alternate double height spaces on a podium, interconnected with the girl’s and boy’s cluster.
STUDENT HOUSING
The student housing was divided into two major parts, the Girl’s cluster, and the boy’s cluster. These were connected with a podium building having double height spaces, hosting secondary amenities like library, gym, community lounge and A.V. room. Both the clusters met at a common entrance courtyard before getting dispersed into the respective buildings. Each cluster is essentially made up of linear blocks of mass, with several voids that act as spaces for imagination to thrive. Transparency is introduced by lifting these on stilts and inculcating recreational spaces within. Several common working spaces have been provided at regular intervals, on each floor, screened with wooden frames.

Signage design
Ayodhya city Competition
There is a great deal more in sign design than people may realise. The proposed signages show how even after being of a contemporary context, they signify deep connections to their roots. The language that the signages follow are predominantly in accordance with the concept of curves symbolizing a seamless flow.
This is an extension of the ideology based on which the logo has been designed. The linear design opens up possibilities for future reshaping or resizing of the signages, thus setting a feasible tone. Colours play a major role in gathering the attention of people. The colour palette has been selected such because it’s bold and eye catchy, creating a strong and lasting impact.
