PREFAB THE FABLAB PROJECT : LOCATION :

01

Warehouse adaptive / reuse Docklands, Melbourne, AUS

Following by the emergence of 3d printing and laser cutting / which is called digital manufacturing , the concept of fabrication lab becomes relevant. How can interior architecture can be a platform for this future production method. The site being chosen is a warehouse in Docklands, a main distribution point that represent the mass production and distribution era. The proposal will insert a new program into the existing warehouse which is fabrication lab , creating a dialogue between the existing large scale industrial port and athe proposed space of small scale manufacturing.

CONCEPTS

The proposal is a a new prototype 3 level fablab that is open, reconfigurable dynamic and participatory. The reason behind this design decision comes back to the social context of fab lab. Fab lab concept are connected to the open source movement which means there is open access to information : from tutorials to the actual final design. There is concept of multiple authorship, anyone can download make change to other people work and make their own version of it. With this logic, not only the design is personalized by user but even the actual production tool is personalized.

.

The spaces consists of different prefabricated “blocks that can be easily disassemble for reconfigurations.

Can the actual interior of the fablab be prefabricated the same way by the user depend on the function needed. Can user personalize and fabricate their own spatial experience .What if the space is reconfigurable and able to expand over time . The proposal will be in different stages over a timeframe. Based on the existing steel structure of the warehouse ,the space comprised a ‘kit of parts’: pre-fabricated walls, platforms, floors, stairs, and ceiling modules furnitures that could be moved and assembled and reassemble easily with minimum labour work needed. .

. Based on the existing steel structure of the warehouse ,the space comprised a ‘kit of parts’: pre-fabricated walls, platforms, floors, stairs, and ceiling modules furnitures that could be moved and assembled and reassemble easily with minimum labour work needed. The proposal aims to be responsive to social economic and technology changes over time. Material, fabrication techniques will changed to adapt to the future context, with interior part being completely 3d printed in the future instead of laser cut plywood and timber as well as the expansion of spaces to accommodate more users.

The lab is a working machine being exposed to public with use of transparent walkway, making people understand the Digital Manufacturing as well as encouraging participation

Unused materials/ industrial wastes from the docks and nearby warehouses being reused by the Maker ‘s community.

The lab itself is built by Fabrication techniques, allow for deconstruct and reconstruct to adapt different spaces based on user ’s needs - a transient form of architecture.

Private workshops to be rented for new generation of Entrepreuners and Makers / Start-up.

Pop-up theater allows visiting guests from other Fab Lab and Entrepreneurs showcasing ideas, works, calling for fundings from the public to keep the Fab Lab running financially

Public workshops for collaboration, democratization of manufacturing and sharing ideas.

Storages and archives space to sort materials and store prototype works.

Cafes on the deck overlooking port give visitor a reason to stay longer as well as serving lab ‘s users.

Stickers art are shared over the internet forming a global network of trade and exchange. Individual artist upload their own sticker design to the internet. This sticker is available for anyone to download , make change and create their own version of the sticker. It is also distributed on to the urban environment for other people to look at , collect it or photograph it and even make it part of their own sticker collection. This culture of sharing ,allowing mixing of ideas , exchanging of experience and it forms a global body of street art sticker that mock , sample and reference from each others.

.. Michael Focault in his essay “ what is an author? ” remind us that many myths and fairy tales do not have authors and that the notion of author only emerged in the late eighteenth century. The essay critique and demolish common sense concept of authorship , the notion of multiple authorship and user content generated by the new media.

Initial texture mapping of the Melbourne CBD to reveal patterns through colors and textures. This mapping was unsuccessful as the larger the scale becomes, the more pattern become unrecognized and un-trackable. While it conveys multiple level of information, it could not be applied to sticker mapping in the CBD as the sticker art scene change constantly overtime with sticker being placed and removed - characterize as ephemerality.

STRATEGY

These series of map shown how the database and artefacts grow overtime with user submission and curation. It correlate with the smaller timeline of individual involvement approach.

The digital museum are designed with a time based approach in mind. Each tools correlate to a level of involvement and interaction from users. The strategy of the sticker museum is over time, fostering users interest to go from unaware of the sticker scene towards actively follow, interest as well as become the advocate of the sticker art scene.

After working out the theoretical framework, the final website was built and hosted online , up and running for the public audiences. It can be accessed both through phone and computers. Different sticker artist was contacted and they all express interest in seeing the prototype becoming a fully functional version. QR code was set up and distributed around the urban area in Melbourne. The page was also linked to different social network , attracts attention from people. The set up facebook pages got 23 likes and i believe over time with more in depth investigation this concept can works.
