Nashville is next

T

he SC&RA Annual Conference was quite the event in Austin in April with more than 800 in attendance.

Some 22 presentations were made in the Job of the Year (JOY) contest that was among the most competitive ever. Each year I try to score each job and compare my results with those of the judges. These complicated jobs with amazing solutions were all winners.

We learned the actual eight winners at the closing night dinner and then rushed back to our offices to write the JOY special section as we do each year. In the coming months, we will be featuring many of the jobs that didn’t take home the trophy in our Site Report column. Don’t miss our JOY special section starting on page 27.

The AC was a huge success and we will be reporting on many of the take-aways from that event in the coming months. Next month we will feature a review of the conference, with lots of photos and information about all the things.

And in the events realm, if you don’t have it on your radar already, the Tower Cranes North America conference will be held in Nashville, TN June 11-12. KHL Group, parent company of ACT, and in partnership with SC&RA, will be hosting the event that will feature some really pertinent topics. The keynote address will be given by a real mover and shaker in the industry, Sam Moyer, who is also the subject of our Q&A interview this month. Among the younger generation in the tower crane sector, Moyer has a lot of interesting things to say about the tower crane market, rental rates and other challenges. n Crane operators who need to earn federally required certifications to work in the United States can once again take the required tests through Crane Institute Certification (CIC). The Sanford, FL-based company is now able to test crane operators and issue certifications that are recognized by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

n Manufacturer Liebherr is

launching an updated portal specifically for the sale of used machines. On this digital platform, customers can find a range of used construction and material handling machines, used attachments and accessories as well as used spare parts – directly from certified Liebherr sales and service partners.

n Engineered Rigging has expanded its rental fleet with the addition of Holmatro Ring Climbing Cylinders which provide incremental lifting height up to 23.6 inches, much more than a traditional hydraulic cylinder. Starting at under 12 inches retracted, each portable, ergonomic cylinder has a lifting capacity of 100 tons but weighs only 50 pounds and features a compact footprint. n HBC-radiomatic has launched a new subsidiary in Canada. Based in the Greater Toronto Area, HBC-radiomatic Canada will provide HBC customers with comprehensive domestic support and tailormade radio remote control solutions

Potain launches two more luffers

M

anitowoc has launched two new luffing jib crane models, the MR 309 and MR 329, which come in 17.6-ton or 27.6-ton capacity variants. These new models follow the introduction of the MR 229 at Bauma 2022, which was the first Potain luffing jib crane with the Potain Crane Control System (CCS) and Potain Connect telematics.

These new models also have these features.

While both cranes share a 197-foot jib and 3.7-ton capacity at the tip, they have different load curves and heights under pivot thanks to the respective 7-foot and 8-foot metre pivot and mast configurations. The company said this latest generation arose from customer feedback for simpler and quicker erection, a greater height under pivot, more powerful load charts and a smaller out of service radius (minimum 31.2 feet up to 39.3 feet).

The cranes come equipped with Potain crane control system and telematics.

The jib on the MR 309 and MR 329 can be mounted horizontally, while the reduced windvane spans make installation on tight jobsites easier, Potain said. Platforms and steps promote secure and efficient worker movement.

The counterjib ballast is installed at working height.

“We’ve received excellent feedback since the debut of the MR 229, particularly for its ease of erection, minimized

out-of-service radius and the integration of CCS. Customers have praised the seamless operation of the crane from the Ultraview CCS cab. With these achievements in mind, we have high expectations for the MR 309 and MR 329 as they round out this innovative new generation of Potain luffing jib cranes,” said Thibaut Le Besnerais, vicepresident of marketing and development at Manitowoc. n

Maeda names new Canadian dealer Maeda Cranes, a designer and manufacturer of compact cranes, has named Cropac Equipment as its official dealer in Ontario, Canada. This strategic alliance is poised to

enhance Maeda’s presence in the North American market, the company said.

Cropac Equipment will now offer Maeda’s complete line of mini cranes across Ontario.

Manitex debuts new articulated crane Manitex International announced the first deliveries of the PM 70.5 SP articulated truck-mounted crane, the latest enhancement to PM Group’s 65 series of articulated cranes.

Giovanni Tacconi, managing director PM Group (Manitex Italy), said the company delivered five 70.5 SP cranes in Italy during the first quarter 2024. The new offering from PM Group is initially being sold in Europe and will be available in North America next year.

Plus, the new ZF TraXon DynamicPerform gear unit helps prevent drift when gearshifting on inclines.

“The supreme roadability of the new Liebherr LTM 11005.3 will be a major benefit for our customers,” said Michael L. Liptak, president and CEO, ALL Family of Companies.

The LTM 1100-5.3 is the first five-axle crane worldwide, with a width of just 8 feet 4 inches.

“It is highly adaptable to the varying geographies our branches serve and will save customers time and money by not requiring additional road licenses or additional truckloads to transport ballast.”

The Liebherr LTM 1100-5.3 also has a maximum capacity of 110 tons and a longer 203-foot telescopic boom for greater reach. The new AT can carry up to 37,250 pounds of counterweights. At 75 percent of the maximum ballast of 49,600 pounds, this is a new record for mobile cranes worldwide. This allows the new LTM 1100-5.3 to perform most of its jobs as a taxi crane without additional ballast transport. n

Two Raimondi luffers in Toronto Canadian company Avenue Building Corporation has deployed two Raimondi LR273 luffing jib cranes for the construction of The United Building, an historic landmark development in Toronto, Canada. Installed between December 2023 and January 2024, the two 19.8ton capacity luffing jib tower cranes are currently onsite at a height of 197 and 177 feet, providing routing, logistics and pilot car services in Ontario, the Northeastern United States and Western Canada for 12 years. Ryan Dodd, president of Secure Specialized, will continue to serve his clientele.

“I will be able to continue serving my clients with the same attention, but now I can also offer them solutions for all their oversize overweight permits,” said Dodd. “It is truly a win-win transaction for everyone.”

The 55-story condominium, preserving elements from the 1928 building and the 1961 expansion, has earned a place in the historical conservation sector, making the United Building North America’s largest heritage retrofit.

Link-Belt telecrawler works at water reclamation facility

rving, TX-based Sundt Construction recently purchased a Link-Belt 250-ton TCC-2500 telescopic crawler crane for the construction of a new water reclamation facility in Taylor, TX. “We had been seeking a TCC-2500 for some time,”

said Michael Wallin, regional equipment manager, Sundt Construction. “Telescopic crawlers are ideal for road projects; they can maneuver under overpasses, retract the boom, and they require minimal disassembly. Our operators have had positive experiences with this crane on

joint venture projects, making it a highly sought-after asset in our fleet.”

During initial construction of the water reclamation facility, the TCC-2500 offloads precast and other construction materials across the extensive site with its pick and carry ability. n

The NCCCO Foundation has published its first report on the load-handling workforce, partnering with the Human Resources Research Organization (HumRRO) in 2023 to conduct the exploratory workforce research and report. The report focuses on understanding several topics of interest, including the demographic makeup of load-handling employees, the state of the recruitment pipeline and how load-handling employees view their jobs and certification.

n a blustery day in Kansas City, I was treated to a tour of Custom Truck One Source’s newly renovated “Building H.” The company has revamped a WWIIera building to house its Fabrication & Crane Manufacturing; Paint & Powder Coating; and Parts, Tools and Accessories departments.

Originally, the Custom Truck campus was purchased by Fred Ross and his family in 2005. The oldest of 12 children, Ross grew up only a mile away from the company’s headquarters in northeast Kansas City, formerly an Armco Steel plant.

Constructed from the shell of a 1940s steel mill building, “H” was purpose-built for boom trucks. For information on Custom Truck’s latest boom truck offering, check out our Product Focus starting on page 19.

The company was also recently recognized with a Capstone Award by the Kansas City Business Journal for its $35 million overhaul of a 220,000-squarefoot warehouse.

“These old buildings have great bones, and we rebuild around them,” said John Lukow, senior vice president, cranes. “It would have started like the building over there, [gestures across the road], leftover from the steel mill. Custom Truck has revamped a WWII-era building to house its Fabrication & Crane Manufacturing; Paint & Powder Coating; and Parts, Tools and Accessories departments.

The floors of the facility were buffed and glossy, and Lukow and his fellow employees were eager to showcase the streamlined industrial painting booth.

Hot air blew my hair from my face when I had the chance to take a few steps into one. Booms were on display with a fresh coat of white paint, while each completed part had a designated place on a sizable row of shelves – almost like a library of mechanical parts. Living up to its nickname of a “one-stop-shop,” boom trucks were exhibited in various stages of assembly.

Investing in workers

Today, Custom Truck employs close to 1,000 people on its overall headquarters site and executives expect to add approximately 100 positions at “Building H” this year, including machinists,

welders, painters, assemblers and materials operators.

After touring the renovated facilities, it’s easy to see that the Custom Truck staff genuinely enjoy what they do, and who they do it with. Lukow even gave me a behind-the-scenes tour of the engineering department, which is located only a few feet from the inner workings of the warehouse.

Lukow also drove me past the newly built R&D Test Pad. Along with structural testing right outside the front door, customers will be able to tour “Building H” while also having a hands-on space to hop behind the wheel.

Safe sling selection

I

have always been told that every job is easy if you have the right tools. The same philosophy is true for lifting slings and rigging. Choosing the proper sling before making a lift will ensure the task is performed correctly and most importantly, safely. Understanding the basics of selecting a sling for your lifting operations is vital for your efficiency and productivity. The rated capacity of a sling varies depending upon the sling material, the size of the sling, and the type of hitch.

Wire rope, alloy steel chain, synthetic web, synthetic round and natural and synthetic fiber slings all have unique properties that need to be evaluated before the material selection can be made. Each type of sling has its advantages and disadvantages.

There are four primary factors to take into consideration when selecting a sling to lift a load. They are: (1) the physical parameters of the load; (2) the number of legs and the angle they make with the horizontal; (3) the rated capacity of the sling; and (4) the condition of the sling.

1 PHYSICAL PARAMETERS OF THE LOAD The size of the object to be lifted, and particularly the location of lifting points, will affect sling selection. The weight of the lift, while a critical component, is only a part of the information. The location of the center of gravity is also necessary to determine sling loadings. If the load has small diameter corners, protective blocking or “softeners” must be used so that sling capacity isn’t reduced. Also, if

lifting a painted object or an object with a finished surface, padding or softeners may be needed between the sling and the load to protect the load.

2 NUMBER OF LEGS AND ANGLE WITH THE HORIZONTAL As the angle formed by the sling leg and the horizontal decreases, the rated capacity of the sling also decreases.

In other words, the smaller the angle between the sling leg and the horizontal, the greater the load on the sling leg. The minimum angle allowed is 30 degrees.

3 RATED CAPACITY The rated capacity of a sling must never be exceeded. The rated capacity is based both on sling fabrication components (minimum breaking force of component material used, splicing efficiency, number of component parts in sling and number of sling legs) and sling application components (angle of legs, type of hitch, D/d ratios, etc.). If you are using one sling in a vertical hitch, you can utilize the full rated lifting capacity of the sling, but you must not exceed that lifting capacity. Under no circumstances shall a sling’s rated capacity be exceeded.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B30.9 requires that all slings be tagged with the rated capacity, name or trademark of the manufacturer and the diameter or size of the sling. Specific sling types require other information the user should be informed about. The user shall maintain this identification so that it is legible during the life of the sling. All persons using the sling should read the tag and understand the information on it.

4 CONDITION OF SLING A visual inspection of all lifting slings is required at each shift before the sling is used. Slings used in severe or special service should be inspected before each use. If the sling does not pass inspection do not use it.

Wire rope multipart slings

Wire rope

Wire ropes are the most common type of lift slings in the construction industry today. Wire rope is often used in slings because of its strength, durability, abrasion resistance and ability to conform to the shape of the loads on which it is used. In addition, wire rope slings are able to lift hot materials.

Wire rope with IWRC’s are significantly more common today due to increased strength with resistance to crushing damage and increased heat resistance.

Wire ropes are manufactured and tested in accordance with ASTM A1023 guidelines. If other grades of wire rope are used, use them in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and guidance. Only regular lay wire rope shall be used for fabricating lifting slings.

The rated capacities for wire rope slings are based on a design factor of 5 per ASME B30.9. The design factor and other factors are used to calculate the rated capacities.

Follow the recommendations of the sling manufacturer when you use wire rope slings at extreme temperatures.

Chemically active environments can affect the strength of wire rope slings. Consult the manufacturer before using a sling in such environments.

Alloy steel

Alloy steel chains offer maximum toughness and are often used for their strength, durability and ability to conform to the shape of the loads on which they are used. In addition, these slings are able to work in high temperature applications.

Alloy steel chain slings are made from various grades of alloy, but the most common grades in use are grades 80

and 100. The most appealing trait is their ability to be repaired, tested and re-certified for future work.

The rated capacities for Alloy Steel Chain slings are based on a design factor of 4 per ASME B30.9. The design factor and other factors are used to calculate the rated capacities. Each high strength alloy chain sling must be marked with an individual sling identification.

Alloy chain slings can provide lifting service in elevated temperatures. The sling user must reduce the load rating based on the temperature the sling is working at. The strength of alloy steel chain slings can be affected by chemically active environments therefore consult the manufacturer before the sling is to be used in chemically active environments.

Synthetic web

Synthetic web slings are widely used slings and offer a number of advantages for rigging purposes. The most commonly used synthetic web slings are made of nylon- or polyester-type yarns.

They provide High Strength to weight ratio, convenience, availability, load protection, and by far they are the lowest cost. Synthetic web slings will wrap tightly around loads and provide good surface contact.

Synthetic webbing materials other than nylon and polyester are also used and the manufacturer should be consulted for specific data for proper use. Review of the lifting plan and application should be performed before using in and around chemical environments.

Protection of the sling is required for all lifts to ensure damage to the sling does not occur during lifting operations.

Inspection of Synthetic Web slings is critical as they are more subjective to cuts and abrasion. Regular inspection of the slings before is critical to ensure the safe usage and performance of the sling. If any damage or deterioration is present, remove the sling or attachment from service immediately.

Synthetic Web slings must be stored in an area where they will not be subjected to mechanical, chemical, ultraviolet damage, or to extreme temperatures. When slings are exposed to extreme temperatures, follow the guidance provided by the sling manufacturer or qualified person. Consult the sling manufacturer for recommended inspection procedures when nylon or polyester webbing slings are extensively exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet light.

Synthetic round

Synthetic round slings offer a number of advantages for rigging purposes. They provide improved strength, ease of use, load protection and economy. Synthetic round slings will conform to the shape of the load, therefore protection of the sling is required for all lifts to ensure damage does not occur during lifting operations.

Each synthetic material has its own unique properties. Certain synthetic materials perform better than others in specific applications and environments.

Some round slings are manufactured using high performance materials, but most are made of nylon- or polyester-type yarns.

The rated capacities for Synthetic Round slings are based on a design factor of 5 per ASME B30.9. The design factor and other factors are used to calculate the rated capacities.

Synthetic Round slings provide a woven jacket over the load bearing fibers. The jacket’s intent is to protect the fiber from abrasion, contaminants, and UV degradation.

Items to look for in the jacket are holes, tears, cuts, abrasive wear, or snags, that expose the core yarn.

Make a thorough inspection of slings and attachments. Where any such damage or deterioration is present, remove the sling or attachment from service immediately.

Long-term exposure to heat,

sunlight or ultraviolet radiation can affect the strength of polyester round slings.

Chemically active environments can affect the strength of synthetic round slings.

Consult the manufacturer before using a sling in such environments. Ensure that in chemically active environments the cover is the same yarn as the load-bearing core.

Review of the lifting plan and application should be performed before using in and around chemical environments.

Natural and synthetic

Natural and synthetic fiber rope slings are becoming much more popular and have been used in marine operations for years.

Fiber rope slings are pliant, grip loads well, and do not mar the surface of the load. The most common constructions for fiber rope slings are 3-strand laid, 8-strand plaited, and hollow braided nylon and polyester. High performance HMPE and Aramid fibers are becoming more popular and are used to provide additional strength to the rope.

The rated capacities for Fiber Rope slings are based on a design factor of 5 per ASME B30.9. The design factor and other factors are used to calculate the rated capacities.

One of the major benefits of Synthetic Fiber rope slings is that it is approximately 1/8 the weight of steel for a given diameter.

The ropes are designed to absorb shock and are flexible for ease of handling. They are resistant to crushing, bending fatigue, and distortion.

Be sure to consult the sling manufacturer for long-term heat exposure. Longterm exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation can affect the strength of natural, nylon and polyester rope slings. Review of the lifting plan and application should be performed before using in and around chemical environments.

Most important tool

When it comes to using lifting slings and assemblies, knowledge is your most important tool. We know this guide can’t answer every question you have about lifting slings, but the intent is to provide some basic advantages of different products. am Moyer’s ascension in the tower crane industry serves as a model of effective workforce development in the tower crane industry, and in the lifting and rigging industry as a whole. As general manager of ALL Tower, a division of the ALL Family of Companies, Moyer is a rising star in the industry’s younger generation of management. He earned the respect of his peers quickly, and he is sharp, articulate and passionate about the tower crane industry. He is also very knowledgeable.

Moyer said that his career was actually “jumpstarted” in high school by taking a computer-aided drafting and design course at the local career center. He went on to study engineering at the University

of Toledo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He worked as an intern at a structural engineering firm and continued with them after graduation. He worked as a structural engineer for two different consulting firms for about 10 years, met his wife and moved from Toledo to Cleveland while earning his professional engineering license along the way.

Then, about 10 years ago, the opportunity arose to join the ALL team as a tower crane applications engineer.

“Clay Thoreson was the general manager for ALL Tower at the time, and he was looking to expand our services to include turnkey professional engineering,” Moyer said. “I feel blessed to have learned about tower cranes under Clay’s leadership – he was definitely passionate about the industry and was gracious to share his knowledge, experience and contacts.”

As ALL Tower’s engineering services expanded, Moyer’s role expanded from applications engineer to director of engineering for tower cranes.

“Promote from within is a cornerstone philosophy at ALL, so when Clay retired, I was offered the opportunity to step into his role as general manager,” he said. “It is hard to believe that was six years ago, already.”

The tower division of ALL was founded in 2000 as a part of ALL Erection & Crane Rental in Cleveland. For the first few years, Randy Harris was the fleet manager. He moved to ALL’s crawler crane division and Rick Mikut was appointed general manager of the tower division. At the time, Mikut had already been with ALL Erection & Crane Rental for 27 years, having spent the previous 20 years in the field as a crane operator and instructor, Moyer said.

In 2005, ALL Tower Crane was officially founded around the same time that the tower division relocated to Richfield, OH. The division had about 100 tower cranes in its fleet, making it a major player in the

tower crane sector in the United States.

In 2010, after the untimely passing of Randy Harris, Mikut moved to managing the crawler division and Thoreson took on the General Manager role at ALL Tower Crane.

“ALL Tower Crane in Richfield has a dedicated service team that receives and prepares new cranes to enter the rental fleet and handles prep work on units between rentals,” said Moyer. “ALL Tower’s service team is led by Marty King, a role he’s been in for more than a decade. Daniel Giera, a mechanical engineer by training with more than 15 years of experience at ALL, became our dedicated tower crane application engineer in 2018.”

WHAT EXACTLY IS YOUR ROLE IN TERMS OF MANAGING ALL ERECTION’S TOWER CRANE DIVISION? My responsibilities include managing the fleet relative to purchases, sales and allocation for rentals. To stay consistent and keep a pulse on the market, I work with a small group to quote each tower crane rental opportunity and to help our sales team pursue work for our fleet. On the service side, my role is to coordinate with our team – to make sure they have the tools and information they need to be successful. Locally, I work with Marty King to coordinate service and assembly, dismantle and climbs in the greater

Over the years, we have diversified our fleet with three different manufacturers: Potain by Manitowoc, Terex and Liebherr.

We do our best to be intentional with our purchases – to look at the state of the industry, where we see advantages in one particular model over another while also keeping in mind service, spare parts and our relationships with each manufacturer.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN THE TOWER CRANE MARKET?

There are really three things that seem to be at the forefront of everyone’s concerns. First, the dynamics of a changing workforce. While we have all seen this coming for years, the reality is we need to adapt quickly as a good deal of experience is retiring and there is no easy plug-and-play solution. This challenge extends beyond just our own workforce, or specifically the service side of the workforce, although that is what comes most readily to mind; we see it across the board. Couple this with new technology and the number of different models and nuances with each, and you have a real double-headed monster.

Second, the project delivery expectations and associated contracts are getting more and more challenging to navigate. The contract negotiation phase is starting later, taking longer and ending with irreconcilable differences more often.

Finally, increased costs driven by rising new equipment costs, financing costs and insurance costs.

HOW ARE TOWER CRANE RENTAL RATES PLAYING OUT IN TODAY’S MARKETPLACE?

In the majority of the areas that we service we are seeing some positive pressure on rates driven by availability and a realization that the rates have to increase to keep pace with the increased www.craneandtransportbriefing.com

I am blessed to be a part of a company that puts safety first and makes it paramount with a dedicated team of safety professionals, safety training and personal protective equipment. My role is to make sure the tower team is addressing the risks specific to our industry – to pass along lessons learned and best practices.

Maybe most critically, though, I try to focus on the human side of safety; our service team is required to perform difficult tasks in challenging conditions in a limited amount of time on a frequent basis. I try to step into that – to work with our service team and our customers to lessen the burden to our team and make sure the job gets done safely.

WHAT IS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?

That is a tough one. I am not sure it is specifically the best business advice, but I would say, the thing that has stuck with me most in my career was something that a university professor told me 20-plus years ago. Matt Lewandowski, a professional land surveyor, taught surveying at the University of Toledo. His advice was that no matter what you do, take pride in your work. My take on it was not so much to be proud of everything that you have done or accomplished.

Instead, I understood it as, be intentional in everything you do – have a reason and a standard for everything that crosses your path, and make sure that before it leaves your hands it meets that standard.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING?

My wife and I have three amazing kids (or as I like to call them, “crazy shenanigators”) that are the focus of most of my time, energy and attention outside of work. I also try to stay active with our local church and enjoy as much outside time as possible. n MAY 2024 ACT

hen boom trucks hit the market back in the 1960s, they were viewed as a niche crane that met the needs of an unserved market. Today boom trucks are a vital tool in a variety of industry sectors. While boom trucks are in the fleets of many crane companies, there are some crane rental companies that just focus on the boom truck market.

Northland Crane Service started in 2015 with a 28-ton National stand-up crane that Erik Peterson purchased from his father’s framing business.

“I wasn’t interested in a career in framing, so a crane service seemed like a better alternative,” he said. “I took the

The National Truck Crane (NTC) package offers additional setup flexibility with four outrigger positions, an optional two-camera system for increased jobsite visibility and a fully integrated wireless wind speed indicator.

According to Ritter, the truck crane-style counterweights offer many combinations, allowing operators to take what they need for the job and still meet roading regulations while maintaining overall agility.

The NBT60XL features a 151-foot five-section, full-power boom. This gives the crane strong reach while still being highly roadable, with an overall vehicle length of under 45 feet, Ritter said.

The NBT60XL With the optional 36-foot offsettable features a 151lattice jib, the crane’s reach can be foot five-section, increased to a maximum of 196 feet. When full-power boom. equipped with the optional two-piece 26 to 45-foot telescopic jib, a platform height of 204 feet can be achieved.

“Ever-changing, customer and safety focused, highly competitive and demanding,” is how Peterson describes the current boom truck market. He said that in his region, the strongest markets for boom trucks tree removal are commercial construction, HVAC unit removal and replacement, setting trusses, installing pools and spas, sign work, precast concrete and steel erection.

Bigger is better

Through the years, the larger capacity boom trucks are getting the most usage, mainly because they can do the work required at a small job and a large job.

The 45, 55 and 60-ton boom trucks can do the work of a smaller capacity truck crane, and they are less expensive to maintain and operate.

The attributes of a boom truck haven’t changed much through the years.

“Reliability, versatility, computer functionality, comfort, load chart capacity, boom length, easy to maneuver and quality,” said Peterson. “This is what makes them so popular.”

The latest boom trucks on the market are in the larger capacity spectrum, according to John Lukow, who senior vice president, cranes, for Load King, a division of Custom Truck. Load King recently launched the Load King 50-155, which is a part of the Crossover suite of cranes that feature common technologies.

“Together with our 80 and 60-ton machines, this crane has our formed “double-keel” boom, the LK-1 crane control system with select-speed, X-pattern outriggers, front bumper winch control, dual side and upper outrigger controls, and our deluxe cab,” he said.

“The 50-ton model has a main boom tip height of 165 feet and can reach 213 feet with the two-piece (lattice and stinger) jib which manually offsets to 15 or 30 degrees.”

Introduced in the fall of 2023, the Altec AC65E-155S is a dual-rated solution offering class-leading lifting capacity, the company said.

“This unit is especially exciting for Altec, as it represents the culmination of an extraordinary effort to combine customer feedback with the latest technological advancements,” Altec said.

The AC65E-155S offers several industry-first features such as a true one-man counterweight installation system, as well as a 2-stage hydraulic articulating jib. The unit features 65 tons of maximum lifting capacity with 155 feet of main boom length. When configured as an aerial device, it can reach a platform working height of 220 feet.

In addition to being the only machine in its class under 40 feet in length, it can also be configured to comply with federal bridge laws, meaning it can travel without any permits. feet of hand height.

“At Load King, we are constantly thinking about how to make our cranes suitable for a single operator,” Lukow said.

Earlier this year, Load King introduced a small remote control that now comes standard with any jib in the Crossover line, Lukow said. It has all crane functions available at a slow speed.

The Manitex TC650 series telescopic cranes are built to meet the wide-ranging needs of owner/operators who may use it for residential construction one day and bridge work the next, according to the company. The Manitex TC65159 features a capacity of 65 tons and a 159-foot boom.

This crane was also designed for rapid deployment and to get the job done safely and quickly. The crane can go from Free-Swing to No-Free Swing with a push of a button, the company siad. With remote outrigger controls the crane sets up quickly and it can move from job to job in less time.

This series features a 4-section boom that extends from 131 to 194 feet. The maximum tip height is 142 feet. It features 4-sheave quick load reeve boom point with two idler reeve boom points. s the world’s largest source of renewable energy, wind power is poised for continued growth.

More than 70,000 wind turbines have been installed across the country, but did you ever stop to think how they got there? The all-encompassing answer is sustainable synergy – a mutually positive relationship between the environment, the community, wind developers and the teams that build wind farms.

Renewable energy construction that is safe, efficient and environmentally responsible depends on collaboration and communication among multiple providers and stakeholders. From the moment a wind turbine leaves the manufacturing facility, well-constructed site access planning is a key part of the equation.

But the ideal locations for wind farms

From the ground up are often not the most accessible.

Developers look at criteria like where the winds are high and few people reside, which often results in the selection of remote locations. It’s not uncommon for renewable energy construction to take place on rough terrain, mountainous areas, swampy land or other challenging conditions that require specialized solutions for safe access.

Access challenges

The cranes used can weigh hundreds of tons, and when combined with the weight of the turbines themselves, this can present challenges to access teams that must create stable surfaces for heavy equipment.

Although every site comes with its own set of obstacles, there are some common access challenges that are encountered when developing wind farms.

MOUNTAIN TOPS: Sloped surfaces can accelerate wind speeds, which is why wind farms are often found on hilltops and mountainous areas. These areas present unique challenges for wind farm installation and maintenance, including steep inclines, rocky terrain and crossing streams.

OPEN PLAINS: The topography of open plains lends itself to high wind speeds, which is why you are likely to spot wind farms while traveling in the Midwest.

Challenges of open plains include soft ground and traversing streams and culverts.

TURBINE SIZE AND WEIGHT: Taller turbines are more efficient because they are able to harness more wind power. However, taller towers and larger blades also come with heavier weight, which must be accounted for when planning site access solutions. Modern turbines can be upwards of 300 feet tall and weigh hundreds of tons. Getting these components to the site efficiently and creating an environment for safe installation is critical for project success.

EQUIPMENT SIZE AND HEIGHT: The heavy equipment used to transport and install

wind turbines must also be considered when developing an access strategy. The cranes used to move turbine towers and blades can weigh hundreds of tons. When combined with the weight of the turbines themselves, this can present challenges to access teams that must create stable surfaces for heavy equipment.

RIGHT-OF-WAY CHALLENGES: Depending on the location, you might need to go through private or government land to get to the wind energy construction site. Doing this requires navigating access permissions, noise ordinances, traffic requirements, restoration requirements, and other requirements.

ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATIONS: Rules can change between project initiation and implementation, possibly impacting site access strategy. Wind farm construction teams should also be aware of seasonal access limitations to accommodate migration, mating or growing seasons.

Although it is sometimes difficult, it is possible to overcome even the most challenging site conditions. This involves having the right team, materials, equipment and expertise.

Skybridge challenge Guay uses the largest crawler crane in its fleet to complete a beautiful skybridge in Montreal.

A

project that is redefining the urban landscape of Montreal, the new skybridge links the residential and commercial project Royalmount to the De la Savane Metro Station. This project, carried out in the city’s Midtown, was completed in two phases and required the use of one of the largest conventional crawler cranes in the fleet of Guay.

The first phase of this project required the installation of the East section of the skybridge, which weighed close to 143,300 pounds.

“To reach the final installation of this first phase, several steps and the use of several types of cranes were necessary,” said Guay. “This section, made up of two

pieces of 93,000 pounds each, was first assembled in tandem with two Liebherr LTC1050 3.1.”

The assembly of the complete section was carried out with the help of a 350ton all-terrain crane in January in the parking lot of the Rib’N Reef restaurant in Montreal. Also, the use of a 650-ton Liebherr LTM1500 8.1 all-terrain crane was necessary to place this section on the specialized transport taking the section to the site for final installation. Finally, the last installation of this section of the skybridge was carried out on February 2, 2024, with the help of a 600-ton Terex A500-2 all-terrain crane.

Precision hauls house modules In January 2023, Precision Specialized started the project of hauling 10 E-House modules from Acheson, Alberta to various points within Ottawa, Ontario, the capital of Canada. Five modules were 50 feet by 16 feet 3 inches by 14 feet and weighed 87,000 to 98,000 pounds. The other five modules measured 60 feet by 16 feet 3 inches by 14 feet and weighed 106,000 to 113,000 pounds.

Loaded dimensions of 165 feet by 20 feet by 15 feet 5 inches were achieved using 13axle rear steer perimeter trailers.

“These trailers were imperative to the success of this project minimizing height and having the rear steer capability to negotiate

not only Ontario infrastructure but also city streets within Ottawa,” according to Precision Specialized. The final delivery took place November 2023.

The project involved the travel of 2,392 permitted miles from Acheson, Alberta to the temporary stage yard near Ottawa. For the most part, the hauls were made during daylight over a 10-transit day period on mostly two-lane roads. The final 40 to 70 miles from the stage yard to final delivery locations were completed at night to mitigate the slow move impact on traffic.

“We faced many challenges including weather, lots of snow, spring weight restrictions, very limited parking locations

The second phase of this project required the installation of the longest segment of this skybridge on the West side, a piece weighing nearly 378,000 pounds. This lifting required the use of a 700-ton Terex Demag CC28001 conventional crawler crane in SSL configuration and the installation of a custom-made platform to allow the crane to crawl during the lift to put the piece in is final position. The work was carried out at night and required the complete closure of one of the major across our entire permitted route, lots of construction including major projects on the Trans-Canada highway and tight infrastructure in Ontario, especially within Ottawa,” said Precision Specialized. “A big thank you to D&J Transport for providing a staging yard near Ottawa, Triton Transport for the assistance providing additional power, as well as escorts, bucket trucks, police officers and our crews who made this project a complete success.”

The project involved cooperation from the provinces including MTO, many municipalities and the City of Ottawa, as there were some northern Ontario reroutes due to construction projects.

Loaded dimensions of 165 feet by 20 feet by 15 feet 5 inches was achieved using 13-axle rear steer perimeter trailers.

Due to the slow-moving hauls, the last 40 to 70 miles were accomplished at night.

Several cranes in the Guay fleet were used to install the skybridge, and included tandem lifts. Cranes used included two Liebherr LTC1050 3.1 units, a Liebherr LTM1500 8.1 and a Terex A500-2 AT. The largest crane used was Guay’s 700-ton capacity Terex CC2800-1.

The Canadian Crane Rental Association will hold its annual conference June 10-13, 2024 at the Caesar Windsor Hotel in Windsor, Ontario.

Other presentations will involve WrightPlan and Siemens Financial.

A highlight of the conference will be the Canadian Lift of the Year presentations in two categories, under 20 tons and over 20 tons. The annual Get Together will be held at the J.P. Wiser’s Distillery Tour, which will include whisky tastings, food and networking.

Tipstick solution Repurposing Barnhart’s tipstick innovation.

teel mills are monuments to human ingenuity. But as with any industrial process, machinery breaks down and needs to be repaired or replaced. In the fall of 2023, the Barnhart team received an urgent request – to remove and replace two 100,000-pound spindles at a steel mill.

The timeline was tight and the tasks were tricky.

Barnhart needed to find a solution to efficiently remove the spindles to bring the mill back online. After a site walk, Barnhart’s team knew what needed to be done. They quickly confirmed that the best tool for the job would be the Barnhart 150,000-pound capacity tipstick.

Built for feedwater heaters at nuclear plants, the tipstick would solve the two main problems: the overhead crane hook could not reach where the expected center of gravity of the spindle was, and no one really knew where the center of gravity was located. The tipstick upper rigging point could adjust hydraulically and move to wherever it is needed to pick up and level the spindle, then tipping the spindle as needed to avoid obstructions during the removal and install operation.

A small crane was used to pick up one end of the spindle far from the overhead crane, and then the tipstick would feed it over to the overhead crane. It was a tightly controlled maneuver in which the small crane and the tipstick picked up

The Barnhart 150,000-pound capacity tipstick allowed the team to manipulate the lifting point to control the spindles’ tipping angle. This allowed for a controlled rotation of the load during the lifting process, and the ability to safely maneuver around obstacles. the spindle and then the trolley shifted it until it was fully supported by the main overhead crane. Removing and replacing both spindles could be completed in one 24-hour shift. It was the perfect application for Barnhart’s unique tool.

Still, each lift was a product of meticulous planning, addressing every physical characteristic, weight distribution and potential obstacle. The Barnhart 150,000-pound capacity tipstick allowed the team to manipulate the lifting point to control the spindle’s tipping angle. This allowed for a controlled rotation of the load during the lifting process, and to safely maneuver around obstacles.

After the Barnhart team confirmed the plans, they began to mobilize. Before the shift started, they gathered at a prejob safety meeting to discuss hazardous conditions that could arise. A Job Hazard Analysis was conducted to prepare for the work and mitigate any concerns. Safety is not just a priority on Barnhart jobs; it’s a commitment etched into the DNA of the Barnhart team. Rigorous safety protocols were implemented and embraced at every stage.

A 24-hour job, the morning crew handed off to the evening crew after 12 hours.

Crews were overlapped by an hour so that the superintendents could assess the situation, make the job handoff, and assure communication was not lost between crews. The two 100,000-pound spindles were safely removed and replaced, and the Barnhart team moved on to other projects. They were looking forward to a company Christmas party in the next few days.

While at the party, the customer called and needed the Barnhart team to come back to the mill. During the installation of the new spindles, the dog bones were mislabeled and the wrong size had been used. The customer had attempted to use different methods to correct the issue; but ultimately realized they needed Barnhart to come back to lift and support the spindles from the top while they removed the incorrect dog bones and installed the correct ones. Already gathered at the Christmas party that night, the team was able to sit down and brainstorm available options so that they could respond quickly.

Within 12 hours the Barnhart team was remobilizing and on-site to begin the support process. The customer was able to get the dog bones switched out and get the ■ mill back online. www.craneandtransportbriefing.com

SECTOR: MARINE/SHIPPING WEIGHT/DIMENSIONS: The Europa weighed 650 tons and was 44.5 meters long and 7.45 meters wide.

CHALLENGES: There was limited access for any type of equipment, such as cranes, to be placed alongside the vessel. There were several points of damage along the hull and the dollies were penetrating the hull. There was an extensive vetting process for the engineering solution through maritime architects and the insurance company. The management of eight gantry legs at the same time was tedious, and there was a constant risk of further damage. There was a constant urgency to deliver a solution.

EQUIPMENT: Four hydraulic gantry systems positioned over the vessel and between the masts. Four 186-ton capacity strand jacks were rigged to keel brackets that had been custom fabricated for the operation.

PROJECT DURATION: One month prep time; four days for set up and breakdown.

LIFT DURATION: July 21-26, 2023

I

t was a dire situation at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Yard in Cape Town, South Africa. While undergoing maintenance, the Barque Europa slipped from its keel supports and rolled onto its starboard side.

The Vanguard team was subcontracted

by Resolve Marine to engineer and perform an up-righting operation to realign the vessel on the track system. The job was fraught with challenges.

The Europa weighs 650 tons and measures 44.5 meters long and 7.45 meters wide. It was lying at approximately 38 degrees to starboard, having shifted about 1.2 meters off center of the keel dollies.

The vessel was being moved off the skidway onto the synchro-lift when the incident occurred. The vessel was partially supported at the stern by the synchro-lift, with the bow supported by the transverse skidway. Between the two structures was a section of concrete quay, leaving limited access for support equipment to recover the damaged vessel. The dollies had penetrated the hull in several locations, impaling the vessel in its fragile position.

Vanguard’s engineering team considered several strategies for the righting and realigning operation, such as using hydraulic jacks and skidding or using a heavy lift crane to right the ship. But these concepts were not suitable. Vanguard designed a bespoke solution to provide an expedient and cost-effective means of uprighting the vessel. RIGGING $150,000 TO $750,000

VANGUARD

Massive uprighting Vanguard engineered a complicated lifting operation to upright the Europa. the urgency. The vessel was blocking the synchro-lift, causing ongoing delays. And a prolonged storm was in the forecast.

Vanguard had to manage and execute the engineering solution perfectly within the weather window to avoid further operational delays.

In a month’s time, Vanguard engineered a plan and mobilized four hydraulic gantry systems that were positioned over the vessel and between the masts to minimize further impact to the masts and rigging.

Once the 400-ton and 600-ton capacity gantry systems were in place at the bow, and 500-ton capacity gantry systems were positioned at the stern, the header beams were lifted into position. Four 186-ton capacity strand jacks were installed.

The strand jack system, which was rigged to keel brackets that had been custom fabricated for the operation, provided a high degree of accuracy and enabled the Vanguard team to lift and upright the vessel in a precise manner. Using a series of controlled lifts and movements, the Vanguard team completed a transverse skidding operation to realign the vessel with the track system.

In addition to the various safety points identified and eliminated through engineering design, there were other safety issues due to the fragile condition and intricate structure of the cargo. Risk mitigation included clearance of accessible dollies from under the casualty at specific intervals; the transfer of 5 metric tons of fuel from the vessel; utilizing larger load-spreading spacers to spread the load longitudinally through numerous frames and reduce the risk of localized forces at the deck, due to contact with lifting slings; and removal of the running sail rigging in

By the time the project was completed and safely signed off on, some 1,600-man hours would be spent across the duration of the project, including engineering, operational and project management activities. “It was a true team effort and the success of the project is testament to the knowledge and experience within the business,” the company said.

arnhart was contracted to work on a project that involved arranging 10 prefabricated modules into two distinct stacks prior to their transfer into the building. Each stack measured 60 feet tall and 60 feet in length. They weighed 480,000 pounds.

The contract stipulated constructing the system within four weeks. When the fabricator failed to consider the installation process until after the modules were created, a challenge emerged.

Barnhart intervened to solve the issue, which would involve providing a custom design for each module stack. This required assessing each type of lifting lug, sorting through issues with vendors and working within a tight timeframe.

The module stacks were produced ahead of schedule, pulled tested in Memphis, TN and delivered to the shop where they would be loaded out.

The modules were constructed without any pre-fabricated lifting points, although the design included spaces intended for them. To address this, Barnhart broadened the scope to encompass the design and fabrication of lifting lugs. Not having bolt-on lifting lugs incorporated into the modules particularly affected the top floor units, which lacked the necessary provisions for rigging attachments.

Barnhart’s team collaborated with the owner and the fabricator, proposing economical options to install the lifting points. Barnhart provided plans for two 12-point rigging systems, one for loading out at the module fabricator and another for the assembly at the project site.

The solution involved stacking and transitioning the modules into the building using a customized slide system arrangement. Once inside, Barnhart had to maneuver them laterally against a wall with minimal clearance, and once in their final set position, Barnhart had to elevate the module trains 10 feet for the installation of their legs. Collaborating with the designer, owner, fabricator and contractor, Barnhart orchestrated the lifting, assembly and installation of the structure, consisting of two trains of stacked modules. The operation required extensive planning, to say the least.

Due to very limited clearances, there was no room for error. The solution needed to support the 12 points of lifting, but it also

had to be able to be in bore of the system and had to be underneath because of the installation wall.

Barnhart’s 500-ton Liebherr LTM1400 facilitated the assembly of modules on top of their equipment. Subsequently, each train was slid into the building and then lifted using Barnhart’s pull-up gantry jacks (PUGs), which were mounted on powered bases. They were then reconfigured to laterally transport the modules to their foundations. Utilizing Barnhart’s slide beams proved crucial in streamlining the installation process, allowing for direct assembly on the modular slide system while maintaining minimal clearance from the building entrance without adding additional jacking steps.

Custom lifting lugs, comprised of five different types crafted by Barnhart for the remaining modules, amounted to 61 total lugs. Engineering and planning endeavors were dedicated to meeting the designer’s stipulated deflection under L/180. By utilizing multiple assemblies of momentconnected slide beams, Barnhart devised a strategy that reduced the necessary equipment by half while adhering to deflection limits.

Safety was a huge part of the project, with daily meetings, inspections, job hazard analysis and TSP. Communication between the Barnhart team and the other teams was critical in the successful ■ delivery of this complicated project.

The project involved arranging 10 pre-fabricated modules into two distinct stacks prior to their transfer into the building.

SECTOR: MANUFACTURING WEIGHT/DIMENSIONS: Each stack measured at 60 feet high and spanned 60 feet in length – with a weight of 480,000 pounds.

CHALLENGES: The modules were constructed without any pre-fabricated lifting points, though the design included spaces intended for them.

Remove, remove, replace On a tight timelime to avoid rolling blackouts, Barnhart removed and replaced a damaged stator between Louisiana and Missouri.

I

n May of 2023, Barnhart was contacted to remove and replace a failed stator at a power plant in Missouri. Generally, stator replacement projects take place during a scheduled outage, and the planning cycle is 12 to 18 months.

Planning for extraction of the old unit takes place when the new unit is being fabricated. But with this job the stator’s failure was unforeseen, and happened just before peak power production season. A rapid deployment solution was required to get the plant back up and running.

The scope of work entailed removing a replacement stator from a Louisiana plant

and loading it onto rail, while concurrently extracting the damaged stator from the Missouri plant. The replacement stator, situated 700 miles away, was to be installed upon delivery. The stator weighed 720,000 pounds, was 40 feet long, 14 feet tall and 15 feet 4 inches wide. Given the critical timing, Barnhart swiftly mobilized engineering and field specialists to Louisiana and Missouri during late May 2023.

Part of that deployment involved mobilizing engineers, field specialists, supervisors and commercial planners to the initial site visit to create a 3D model.

After assessing and engineering a solution, equipment was mobilized to each site.

The biggest Barnhart-specific tool would be a 500-ton hoist that was used Barnhart’s meticulous plan resulted in the project being completed in a 57-day timeframe, making three generator lifts – removing the damaged generator in Missouri, removing the replacement generator in Louisiana and installing the replacement generator in Missouri.

SECTOR: POWER WEIGHT/DIMENSIONS: The stator weighed 720,000 pounds – 40 feet long, 14 feet tall and 15 feet 4 inches wide.

CHALLENGES: Generally, stator replacement planning and execution takes 12 to 18 months. This job required removing a replacement stator from a Louisiana plant and loading it onto rail, while concurrently extracting the damaged stator from the Missouri plant. instead of a strand jack system. Barnhart’s 70-foot gantry truck was also a critical tool. Even though time was of essence, all engineering designs underwent a rigorous independent third-party review. Each jobsite was thoroughly examined.

Before removing the replacement stator from the Louisiana site, a geotechnical engineering firm assessed the soil conditions in areas where cranes and heavy equipment would operate.

Excavation of the top four to five feet of soil was necessary, followed by backfilling with geogrid material and crusher run to ensure stability. By June 8, 2023, Barnhart had commenced removal activities in Louisiana, including the extraction of isophase buses and structural steel to access the generator.

Barnhart’s innovative approach resulted in the project being completed in a 57-day timeframe that involved making three generator lifts – removing the damaged generator in Missouri, removal of the replacement generator in Louisiana and the installation of the replacement generator in Missouri.

With over 12,000 man-hours invested, including six separate stator lifts, the project was accomplished ahead of schedule, ensuring the power plant would resume full production and avoid potential grid disruptions during the peak summer season.

Despite the rapid deployment of the job, safety is a fundamental core value at Barnhart. Every day started with a safety meeting so that the crew knew what work areas were busy and what was going on site wide. SECTOR: AEROSPACE WEIGHT/DIMENSIONS: The Space Shuttle solid rocket boosters were 118 feet long, 12 feet 6 inches wide and 12 feet 8 inches tall. Each weighed 100,000 pounds.

HAULING CHALLENGES: There were many safety concerns for this project, including traveling during daylight hours in Southern California traffic. The motoring public wanted to see the solid rocket boosters going down the highway, and in some cases traffic jams ensued because of people wanting to witness seeing the invaluable cargo. Another major safety concern was the delivery site and ceremony. The Bragg team had to stop about 15 miles away from the delivery site and stage until the next morning due to Los Angeles curfews and the ceremony timeframe.

They entered the city around 4 a.m. to avoid rush hour traffic. The Bragg team navigated through thousands of people to make the final delivery before the ceremony.

EQUIPMENT: Bragg’s fleet included a 2022 Peterbilt 367 heavy haul tractor, a 2021 Western Star 4900 heavy haul tractor and two Scheuerle MES 9 Line hydraulic platform trailers PROJECT DURATION: September 1- October 31, 2023

ragg Companies was contracted to install the Space Shuttle Endeavour in lift-off configuration at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. For the first phase of the project, Bragg hauled two NASA Solid Rocket Boosters from a storage facilitiy in Mojave, CA to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. One of the most important planning considerations was to keep the transport length and height of the invaluable rocket boosters as short as possible.

Unfortunately, the saddles provided to support the boosters while in transit were too tall. As a result, Bragg hired Rackley Trailers to design and manufacture six custom low-profile saddles to support the boosters during transport. It also took several days to find a suitable route

through Los Angeles to accommodate the gross weight and overall dimensions. The coordination effort required an ample amount of man hours within the office, between several city and county permits, the Los Angeles City Public Works for street closures and sign removals, the Los Angeles Police Department for escorts and the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office. It was also essential for Bragg to deliver the rocket boosters on time for a California Science Center ceremony to commemorate the exhibit.

While turns were relatively easy due to the steerability of the trailer, narrow city streets and overhead clearance obstructions were a challenge. Bragg had Scheuerle design and manufacture four 25-foot-long deck sections for their MES ■ 9 Line trailers.

Bragg’s team made sure everything went off without a hitch, so the rocket boosters could be delivered on time for the California Science Center ceremony.

OMEGA MORGAN Omega Morgan transported six turbine runners across British Columbia.

Delicate, large and heavy O mega Morgan transported six turbine runners – the heaviest loads ever to cross British Columbia – more than 1,000 kilometers, from Prince Rupert to Northern BC. The initial route study was performed in

2018, the job was awarded in 2019 and transport began in November of 2020.

Due to ongoing hurdles and delays, the loads were delivered over three winters, with the final load delivered in January of 2023.

TECHS & SPECS

Throughout the project, the team navigated six avalanche zones, potential sudden black ice situations, narrow roads and rapidly changing weather from torrential rain and wind to heavy snow.

SECTOR: ENERGY WEIGHT/DIMENSIONS: Each turbine weighed 380,000 pounds and the convoy used to transport them was 225 feet long by 16 feet, 3 inches tall by 26 feet, 2 inches wide. The six turbine runners were 24 feet 10 inches wide and 13 feet tall. The turbine runners were delicate and could not be secured with anything touching most of their surface.

HAULING CHALLENGES: There was only one viable route from Prince Rupert to Fort St. John, across seven maintenance districts. Plans for summer transport across most of the route became immensely more complex when delivery schedules demanded transport in the winter. Changing weather conditions required constant monitoring and meticulous plans for road closure stopping points. Job Hazard Assessments and safety meetings before every maneuver were critical. The team navigated six avalanche zones, potential sudden black ice situations, narrow roads and rapidly changing weather from torrential rain and wind to heavy snow.

The project included pivoting on previously planned methods to transfer loads creatively and safely from ship to land. The team needed to navigate extreme tide swing conditions, traverse many treacherous winter mountain passes, and cross 110 bridges (20 monitored). The route www.craneandtransportbriefing.com

“With so many moving parts, it took all of our resources on the specialized transportation team to make this project come together,” said Kai Ferrar, director of engineering, Omega Morgan. “We not only get the job done, but we did it with zero injuries or incidents. required a full closure of Highway 16 (the only route to Prince Rupert), and the team had to ensure bush roads were solidly frozen enough for safe crossing near the end of the route. The team coordinated with Canada National Railroad for encroaching on railroad tracks 9 times along the route (7 crossings and 2 instances where the load overhung the tracks and required flaggers).

The complex route also required 25 traffic control personnel each night, multiple engineering firms, alignment across 16 entities, communication across a 51-person email string every morning, a 57-page traffic management plan, and acquiring the most expensive permit in Omega Morgan’s history – $43,000 per load, one-way.

Due to the delicate, large and heavy nature of the load, Omega Morgan had to engineer custom built truss tubes and widening beams to allow for a 24-foot-10-inch diameter load to sit between the tubes. They also innovated a custom-built reusable restraint system for the delicate load, as the surface could not be touched except in specific, limited locations.

ransportes Muciño handled the domestic and international transportation of turbines, generators and auxiliary components ranging from 44,000 pounds to heavier than 705,000 pounds, from the Altamira and Progreso ports to sites in Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi and Yucatan.

Mexico is a very desirable location for foreign investment, the company said. The annual power consumption is very high and growing at more than two percent.

The country is seeing modernization of generation plants, which in turn is driving power market growth. This has resulted in a reduction of generation from coal and oil and more natural gas.

The scope of the project included vessel reception, transportation and rigging, ■ along with gas turbines.

Mayan train works kept the route constantly changing, and at the Yucatan peninsula several civil works were made to navigate around the building sites, causeways and tollbooths.

SECTOR: POWER WEIGHT/DIMENSIONS: Gas turbines measuring in at 40 feet long by 16.7 feet wide by 15.6 feet high and weighing 758,000 pounds.

HAULING CHALLENGES: The move overcame logistical challenges like the Mayan train construction, major reinforcements on highways, train schedules and civil works projects to deliver the freight safely and on time. The company was also tasked with the fabrication and installation of bridge reinforcements, major shore up on Canada de la Muerte (a 30 meter deep glen), construction of causeways, road pads, curvature expansions, modifications and reconstruction of roads.

the expansion of Progreso Port made transport complicated, and Transportes Muciño needed to find their way around an overpass that was under construction. Given the current status of the infrastructure, 13 jumper bridge crossings were made. Once reaching the Guanajuato area, the team faced the shore up of Canada de la Muerte bridge, a night transit in the Silao area and construction of causeways on the road towards Salamanca, and the arrival of vessels earlier than anticipated.

The team also had to find an alternative road for a hip turbine.

WESTERN MECHANICAL SECTOR: INFRASTRUCTURE WEIGHT/DIMENSIONS: 220-ton pedestrian bridge, intact at a length of 138 feet HAULING CHALLENGES: Transport began in Hamilton, Ontario. The size and weight of the load, coupled with the tight turns and close proximity of the surrounding structures, buildings and utilities, were a cause for concern. A holistic solution was accomplished by coordinating with Walters, the bridge fabricator, for the loading and the general transport ideology, the City of Hamilton and their engineers for the over the road transport and the City of Hamilton Utilities department to clear signs and light posts as needed. The company also worked with Logistec and the Port of Hamilton for the barge, Toronto Tug and Transport for the supply of the barge, Redpath Sugar for the RO-RO on the Toronto side, Toronto Parks and Recreation department, City of Toronto Water, Roads and Infrastructure, TTC Isherwood Geostructural Engineers, Englobe, EllisDon, GID construction and Hines.

As mentioned, en route to Toronto the heavy loads going over the underground infrastructure were a concern due to the heavy trailer axle loadings, additionally there were major city water main construction projects.

In total, three truckloads of steel plates were required to be laid by crews to protect these temporary city works during the heavy transport works. Safety concerns around heavy pedestrian traffic caused this project to take place during the evenings. The TTC bus and train routes were diverted or cancelled due to this move.

Western Mechanical set a 220-ton pedestrian bridge directly into place in downtown Toronto without the use of overhead cranes, and directly adjacent to historic Union Station.

Western Mechanical transported a bridge from road to barge to beach to downtown Toronto.

W

estern Mechanical and Pinnacle Logistics Solutions were tasked to provide a transportation, delivery and installation solution for a 220-ton pedestrian bridge. The bridge would be picked up from the fabricator in Stoney Creek, Ontario and set into place in downtown Toronto, directly adjacent to historic Union Station.

After almost two years of engineering and planning, the bridge was transported over the road on a double-wide 12-line Goldhofer PST-E (SPMT) approximately 11 miles, making several tight turns in urban Hamilton before arriving overnight at the Port of Hamilton. The bridge was then loaded onto a self-contained RO-RO barge and transported across Lake

Ontario to Toronto. Western Mechanical and Pinnacle Logistics Solutions sought out and coordinated the use of park land to be used as a barge landing for discharge of the bridge directly onto Jarvis Street during the overnight hours. The versatility of SPMTs was on full display, as the superstructure was skillfully moved from the barge at Sugar Beach, through a series of extremely tight turns and corridors.

Once clear of overhead structures close to the delivery location, the bridge was super elevated using a gantry lift system to make room for additional height supports to be placed between the trailer and the bridge. The final leg of the transportation was completed, with the overall height of the load now at 24 feet, to deliver the bridge closer to its required installation height.

Upon arrival at the installation site, the bridge was precisely maneuvered into its final position using a combination of hydraulic controls for the trailer and jack and slide equipment installed on the trailer for final placement onto the bridge bearing supports.

The final transport solution was driven by the limited footprint at the installation site which was also located over a TTC Subway tunnel, and the property’s own ■ four-story parking garage. www.craneandtransportbriefing.com

RIGGING UNDER $150,000

MCNALLY-NIMERGOOD McNally-Nimergood (M&N) was contracted by RCL Construction to lift and rig a digester lid at a wastewater treatment plant. After reviewing drawings of the lid, M&N’s team discovered it had had concrete walls, making it significantly heavier than estimated. M&N dispatched two 550-ton cranes to the site to complete the tandem crane pick.

RIGGING $150,000 TO $750,000 BARNHART Barnhart was contracted to provide engineering, crew and equipment to remove and replace a dam cart hoist and cable. The project began August 2022 and was completed in June 2023.

CLARK RIGGING Clark Rigging and Rental, headquartered in Lockport, NY along the Erie Canal, has an annual contract for crane and rigging services across the NYS Canal system. fabricating and implementing an overhead gantry system that could hoist both gates off of their hinges, shift inward of the lock chamber, stabilize in the vertical position and allow for critical maintenance to be safely performed.

TURNER INDUSTRIES Turner Industries Group was contracted by a chemical plant in Panama City, FL to remove and replace two tall oil towers that had been in service since the 1960s. With limited space inside the plant, removing and replacing the two 121-foot, 210,000pound towers presented many challenges.

The site had limited laydown area to stage the new towers. An employee parking lot had to be repurposed as a laydown yard to house the new towers prior to being set.

RIGGING OVER $2 MILLION

FAGIOLI Fagioli installed a new pipe for a drinking water abduction system in Venice, Italy.

The 7-ton pipe was lifted from the dock by a crane and a lifting lug system.

During the transport, the pipe remained connected to the transport pontoon by means of the lifting jacks and bands that prevent its horizontal movement.

OXBO MEGA TRANSPORT OXBO provided lifting/rigging, transportation and installation of a newly fabricated gallery conveyor measuring 314 feet in length, 12 feet in width, 16 feet in height and weighing nearly 250 tons. The project was located along the Oregon/

FAGIOLI Fagioli was contracted for the marshalling yard operations, transport and lifting for the Calvados offshore wind farm.

Fagioli was in charge of the offloading operations and the loading activity from/ to client vessels of 64 offshore wind farm foundation items, including 64 monopiles and transition pieces weighing up to 1,000 tons and 600 tons respectively. There were two operations: the load in of monopiles and transport to a storage area, and the load in of transition pieces up to a concrete blocks supports storage area.

ADVANCED FREIGHT DYNAMICS Advanced Freight Dynamics loaded three backup power genset buildings, which are a backup power unit for electric motor driven compressors. The team traveled 2,438 miles from Houston, TX to Ada, MN. The backup power genset buildings were hauled from the fabricator to a facility where they would service the natural gas industry. These buildings were fabricated to be a backup power unit to a main electric motor driven compressor.

FRONTIER HEAVY HAUL & SUPPORT Frontier Heavy Haul & Support’s (FHHS) customer dismantled a Marion 8200 dragline to move it from one mine location to another mine location in Texas. Frontier was hired to transport the abnormally shaped and heavy parts of this machine. The customer also requested the expertise of FHHS on what dimensions the parts/pieces should be, to haul this machine in a timely matter to the new location.

PALCO TRANSPORTATION Palco Transportation was responsible for ordering permits through nine states over a combined 1,600 miles while

coordinating three escorts and law enforcement through seven of the nine states while staying on schedule of the unload date. The load was picked up in Walker, LA and was delivered on to North Kingstown, RI. The load was a steel fixture for a Department of Defense vessel. The cargo measured 57 feet 10 inches long, 17 feet 9 inches wide and 8 feet 10 inches high. The load weighed in at 32,000 pounds and was loaded onto a Faymonville MultiMax 6-axle steerable trailer.

the roll-off process began onsite. The BOSS team skillfully hauled the heaviest reactor 1.4 miles from the offloading facility to the staging area. The heaviest reactor was successfully transported on March 22, 2023.

MOVING

TRUCKING 160,000 TO 500,000 POUNDS

BARNHART Barnhart was contracted to receive a kiln from ship’s gear and then transport it.

The kiln was 19.85 feet in diameter by 59.38 feet long. The 180-mile transport was completed using Barnhart’s 12-dolly rig. Once the route was finalized, the company was required to get approvals from three DOT district offices. To accommodated the 23-foot tall transport, trees and overhead wires required extensive coordination.

BERARD TRANSPORTATION Berard was contracted for the installation phase of the 1-10/1-12 College Drive flyover project in Baton Rouge, LA. This was phase two of a four phase project. The project’s first phase began in January of 2022 when the Berard team removed a portion of the existing bridge span to allow for future widening of the bridge. A new, wider span was constructed at height near the site, and the Berard team was once again called on to install the new span. The team utilized 72 axle lines of SPMTs with accelerated bridge design grillage as well as stacking SPMTs on top of SPMTs to reach the proper height to lift the span.

TRUCKING OVER 500,000 POUNDS

BOSS CRANE & RIGGING BOSS Crane & Rigging’s Heavy Haul Division was contracted to transport two reactors in California for a petrochemical industry client. The project start date was on March 10, 2023, when BOSS began receiving reactors and associated material at the port. BOSS managed the cargo on a deck barge until

Superior is tasked with erecting 10 modules for the Concourse D expansion project in Atlanta. Nearly 50 employees are assisting across the jobsites.

Once the modules are moved into location along the exterior of Concourse D, Superior will connect them to the existing structure sitting approximately 3 feet away and then fill the 3-foot gap with steel framing.

n 2023, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport hosted over 104 million passengers, continuing to live up to its reputation as the world’s busiest travel hubs. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens has described the airport’s impressive performance as “a testament to the city’s resilience and the pivotal role the airport plays in the economic recovery of Atlanta.”

Alongside the monumental foot traffic, there is also a vast amount of construction underway at the airport. Atlanta-based Superior Rigging & Erection is working on three to six projects at the airport at any given time. This ranges from steel erection, crane rental, rigging and warehousing. Most notably, Superior has been assisting with the Concourse D expansion, the Concourse E extension, the plane train and miscellaneous crane and rigging work such as setting generators, electrical units, curbs and more.

Concourse D, but required a solution that would impact Delta as little as possible.

After many years of engineering and design, a plan was developed to expand the concourse by building modules. These modules are built off site located over a mile away, but the site is still on airport grounds. After the modules are built, they are set to be loaded, secured and transported across the secured airport runways on SPMT trailers in the middle of the night. Each one-mile move is expected to take one hour.

Superior Rigging & Erecting is responsible for erecting the 10 modules.

The company started the modules in October 2023, and have finished the first five. The first module move across the runways was set for late April.

Once the modules are moved into location along the exterior of Concourse D, Superior will connect them to the existing structure sitting approximately 3 feet away and then fill the 3-foot gap with steel framing. Superior is also performing rigging work for the Concourse D expansion, which includes air handling units and curbs for the expansion.

With any airport project, the team must follow strict protocol when bringing manpower, equipment and cranes on site.

The transportation and installation of the modules airside will see the greatest impact as Superior must go through the runways in the middle of the night.

Weather is always a concern. If planes get delayed late into the night, it could also impact the transportation schedule.

The Concourse D Widening Project is unique in regard to the extent HAMB is modularizing and prefabricating the structure and the majority of the buildout. this expansion project. A partner on the project is Mammoet, which is providing transportation equipment, including a Module-Transporter (SPMT) with a payload of 316,580 pounds and a 300-ton capacity jack climbing double. Superior has two crawler cranes on the jobsite, a Link-Belt LS-218H and a 248-Hylab-5.

A Link-Belt RTC-80100-II is being used airside to connect the modules to Concourse D. An 80-ton Rigger Special forklift is offloading steel as it arrives so that Superior can keep their crawlers working. The team also reconfigured the LS-218 crawler crane to pick 65,000 pounds to assist Mammoet in putting the SPMT trailer together for the first test lift and transport.

Mayor Dickens recently spoke with President Joe Biden about the Atlanta airport project at the White House.

The mayor walked him through the expansion construction and used a model size Mammoet SPMT trailer to portray the concourse move. This expansion is funded by the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill passed by Congress and signed by President Biden in 2021.

“This thing here [SPMT] allows us to build it a mile away and then transport it in – in millimeter-like precision,” said Dickens. “It’s called an SPMT, which is a self-propelled modular transport unit. So, a big section of our airport is built offsite, and we roll it in here overnight. And that way we can keep people working, keep the airport flowing and still be able to expand this concourse.”

he construction industry has seen significant shifts in legal matters over the years, driven by various factors like changes in regulations, advancements in technology, evolving project-delivery methods and shifting market dynamics.

More recently, legislative changes in the state of New York could signal how workers’ compensation cases move forward across the country and impact business owners in the space.

Overall, New York’s pioneering efforts in workers’ comp legislation have had a lasting national impact. Key aspects that have influenced other states include: no-fault compensation, statutory benefits schedule, employer liability limitations,

That said, owners, operators and executives in the New York construction space have begun to increasingly find themselves facing costly claims in favor of workers that, in years prior, carried a smaller dollar value and were largely viewed as inconsequential.

Drilling down

As explained by Rosanna Shamash, Supervising Partner, Jones Jones LLC, in a recent article for Construction Executive, drilling down into more recently enacted legislative changes, the following three modifications in the state of New York could signal increased difficulties for owners and operators across the U.S. construction industry:

COLLATERAL ESTOPPEL ON THE OUTS:

With the recent passage of Senate Bill S9149, New York is aiming to do away with collateral estoppel – or the use of one court decision in another case. Under this measure, if a workers’ compensation defense attorney litigates a fraud finding in a case, an attorney would not be able to use that decision in any other case.

Historically, attorneys would be able to pass that decision to their partners in the general liability space, negating the need for the general liability attorney to litigate the same issue.

To combat this change, construction executives should seek legal counsel that have relationships with and access to specialists such as doctors, investigators and more. While attorneys can no longer use a past court decision in their case, the cases are still tied, and teams can still collaborate. However, general liability teams will now have to relitigate a case from a workers’ compensation perspective.

DISQUALIFICATION OF WORKERS’ BENEFITS DUE TO MISREPRESENTATION:

Where legislation like S9149 can open the doors to fraud, recently passed Section 114a can benefit employers and workers’ comp defense attorneys alike.

Under Section 114a, employees can be disqualified from receiving workers’ comp benefits if an individual makes a material misrepresentation that causes them to receive benefits. Workers can either be penalized with a mandatory penalty in which a judge will disqualify a worker for a set period of time, or a discretionary penalty, which disqualifies a worker from all future indemnity benefits. Construction executives should take caution and be sure when making fraud claims – as they could be deemed uncredible if claims are raised too often.

CARRIER RIGHTS TO LIEN RECOVERY:

In workers’ compensation, a lien is used by the insurance provider to recoup what it has paid out when a worker files a claim with a construction executive.

In such instances, the insurance carrier will automatically pay for the injuries of a worker, regardless of fault. Carriers are given the right to lien recovery through Section 29. Meaning carriers can ask for compensation back if a third party is found negligent in the general liability matter.

Knowing the legalese

Ultimately, as Shamash further acknowledged in her piece, the best way for business owners in the construction industry to protect their businesses for the future is to gain as much understanding of changes in the legal landscape as possible, secure defense attorneys who know the construction space and take the necessary safety and risk-management steps to protect their businesses before an incident ever happens. n CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Breaking down b SC&RA endorses a new, ongoing effort to promote mental health in the trades.

A

s part of an ongoing mental health focus in 2024, SC&RA unveiled two new support tools at its recent Annual Conference (April 15-19, Austin, Texas). In line with similar efforts growing in effectiveness throughout the industry, one of the tools is a poker-style chip with language on the front and back assuring chip holders they are not alone, and encouraging them to text or dial the 988 national Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The second deliverable comprises a 988 Lifeline hard hat sticker – another tool that has seen productive use and positive results since its inception.

The aim is to both create and drive awareness while also giving workers in the trades a viable, around-the-clock resource for mental health support.

When people call, text or chat with the 988 Lifeline, they are connected to trained crisis counselors who are part of the existing 988 Lifeline network, made up of over 200 local crisis centers. These counselors are trained to provide free and confidential emotional support and crisis counseling to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress, and connect them to resources.

The jobs our members run can be extremely stressful and require mental fortitude to be accomplished without incident.

SC&RA’s commitment to getting as much worthwhile support and awareness as it can out to its member companies, and relatedly, to the larger industry, has been a team effort – with more and more member companies joining the endeavor all the time.

“I think with the trades, these are craft people – men and women – though it’s dominated by men … and over the years, while it’s softened a bit, it’s always been a tough-guy, difficult industry to work in,” noted SC&RA Chair, Scott Bragg (Bragg Companies). “People bust their butts and put their lives on the line a lot – the stigma that you’re soft if you’re struggling mentally, either with your work or personal life, has been hard for people to deal with over the years.

But getting this message out – especially through the 988 number – that it’s okay to ask for help, has never been more important.”

In addition to fully supporting SC&RA’s chip and sticker initiative, one thing Bragg Companies is working on through its HR department is figuring out how to work mental health support into

its overall health insurance platform for all of its employees.

“I personally don’t think we, or our insurance companies, spend enough time, effort or money on developing strong mental health programs. But hopefully this is a productive first step for us.”

He also commended SC&RA for taking the steps to move mental health to the front of the line. “Any time an Association like SC&RA shines a light on a topic as vital to the future of the trades as mental health, it’s going to not only snap everyone to attention, but galvanize the larger collective and dial them in to a common mission.”

Worth every effort

Echoing Bragg, Jeremy Landry (Deep South Crane & Rigging) acknowledged that, “… it has taken a while to shift the industry culture to even report physical injuries, and I think we face the same challenge in mental health.”

That said, Landry doesn’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all solution to mental health.

“I think it will be different depending on the person and what makes them the most comfortable. The most important step is the first one, and I believe SC&RA has done that. The poker chips and hard

Louis Juneau (NOVA Permits & Pilot Cars) explained why the compounding effect of mental health challenges can be so destructive. “Stigma can decrease self-esteem, leading to a loss of self-respect, while increasing shame and hopelessness. People with mental illness may be viewed in a negative way, which can lead to discrimination and, in turn, more or longer-lasting mental illness.”

Moreover, noted Dave Merrill (Pahoa Express), “So many people can be affected by one person’s mistake. The jobs our members run can be extremely stressful, and require mental fortitude to be accomplished without incident.”

As a result, said Eddy and Kimberly Kitchen (Kitchen’s Crane & Equipment), “Removing the stigma from mental health in both construction and transportation could mean saving a life and/or saving a family from the emotional trauma of suicide or drug addiction – and is certainly worth every effort.”

The Kitchens believe the success of such efforts is dependent on consistent education, workplace training programs and the development of peer support teams at every level. “These changes can have lasting positive effects for our industry, including a stronger, more productive workforce, more success for companies in our industry, improved industrial output for our country and, certainly, more healthy and happy individuals and families.”

Giant step

At Buckner HeavyLift Cranes, said Meredith Williams, they’re trying to make mental health, as well as support and awareness, a topic of general conversation – similar to how physical health is universally discussed. “At Buckner, we’ve made efforts to highlight the mental health, counseling, therapy and support services that our company insurance provides,” she indicated. “Increasing awareness that these benefits already exist helps employees know they are there and free to use – to get ahead of any issues.

We are also in the process of working on a pilot program to allow our employees to use the money they accrue as part of their safety incentive towards counselling sessions if they elect to do so. Our focus is on how we can help support benefits for employees to take advantage of – to help avoid a crisis.”

Meghan McNally-Wininger (McNallyNimergood Crane Rentals) sees it the same. “You never know the difference that you can make in someone’s life, and in the lives of those who love and care for them,” she emphasized. “Knowing that someone cares and is there to listen, can make a

Disarming stigma is something that Matt Rix (ProLift Rigging Co.) and SC&RA Crane & Rigging Group Chair considers a long-time coming across the trades.

“For too long, no one has wanted to talk about it,” he said. “Which makes SC&RA’s efforts to build out this conversation so transformative – and we’re glad to be a part of it.”

Rix first remembers hearing about mental health at an SC&RA meeting in 2023. “And then the next meeting, I heard a little more – and people were much more engaged,” he pointed out. “They wanted more information. And the Association is, once again, stepping up. Which is vital – because when an organization as influential as SC&RA makes the effort to break down some of these barriers and open up discussions, it’s a giant step in the name of progress that hopefully spreads throughout the industry as a result.”

M.C. Dean adopts telehandler certification M.C. Dean is a forward-thinking company that requires CCO certification for its crane operators, riggers, signalpersons and most recently telehandler operators. It leverages CCO certification to spread the safety message throughout the company.

One of the company’s primary activities is building prefab data centers, which are then trucked to their destination for installation.

This workflow relies heavily on telehandlers to move components and completed skids, so it has recently added the new CCO Telehandler Operator certification to its safety arsenal.

This new CCO certification is the only Telehandler Operator credential available that meets OSHA 1926 Construction and OSHA 1910 General Industry Rules, as well as complies with industry standards (ANSI/ ITSDF B56.6). Because it is the only certification available that meets all three standards, it provides the highest level of compliance for employers, as well as the greatest flexibility for employees.

The ORM team conducts whiteboard meetings with each crew first thing in the morning – and again after lunch – to go over the scope of the day’s work, applicable hazards, safety controls, policies and procedures and feedback from the crew. In short, they focus on safety 100 percent of the time, all day, every day. These meetings keep the safety conversation open so that everyone is aware of what others are doing.”

Further, they also determine the staffing requirements for each task ahead of time, and then work backward to make sure enough people are trained and certified to fulfill the project requirements. They review training records for their expected teams, and then make sure that all crew members have the proper training – and certifications – for the work they will be asked to do.

Drowsy driving W

hen it comes to the complex world of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operations, driver fatigue represents a critical safety challenge.

Fatigue, stemming from physical or mental exertion, significantly impairs a driver’s performance, potentially leading to catastrophic outcomes. A concerning revelation from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) is that 13 percent of CMV drivers were considered fatigued at the time of their crashes. This statistic underlines the urgent need for addressing driver fatigue proactively.

The only real, practical way to reduce fatigue is to sleep. Contrary to popular belief, the use of caffeine (coffee, energy drinks, etc.) will not reduce fatigue. These sorts of drinks might increase alertness for a short period of time, but they’re not actually reducing fatigue. Instead, they’re giving the driver a false sense that they are combating exhaustion. When the caffeine wears off, the driver could actually be even more fatigued than when they first ingested the drink.

Ask yourself this: Would you want to get on an airplane with fatigued pilots drinking coffee to stay awake? The answer is obviously, no. You want the pilots to be alert and operate the aircraft safely. That’s exactly what we want and expect from our drivers – to be alert and operate their commercial motor vehicles safely.

Understanding the risks

Fatigue in drivers can be caused by all sorts of reasons, not the least of which is inadequate sleep, prolonged work hours, and the pressures of strenuous work or non-work-related activities. It’s crucial to recognize that fatigue is not merely about feeling sleepy, either—it encompasses a decline in mental and physical performance, which can severely impact a driver’s response time, decision-making ability, and overall vehicle control.

The FMCSA emphasizes that driver alertness correlates more significantly with the time of day rather than the duration of the task at hand. The hours between midnight and 6 a.m., and again in the afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m., are particularly risky. During these periods, natural circadian rhythms cause drowsiness, which can be exacerbated by lack of sleep.

Managing fatigue

The FMCSA has established Hours of Service (HOS) regulations that are designed to help manage fatigue by limiting the hours operators can drive.

Key provisions include: 11-HOUR DRIVING LIMIT: Drivers may operate for a maximum of 11 hours after taking 10 consecutive

To combat the dangers of driver fatigue, FMCSA offers several practical tips: TIP #1: GET ENOUGH SLEEP BEFORE DRIVING Ensure you are well-rested before hitting the road. Avoid driving during peak drowsiness times (early morning and mid-afternoon). If you find yourself feeling sleepy while driving, it is critical to pull over safely and take a rest.

TIP #2: MAINTAIN A HEALTHY DIET Irregular eating patterns can contribute to fatigue. Opt for light snacks before bedtime to improve sleep quality and avoid heavy meals or going to bed on an empty stomach as both can disrupt sleep.

TIP #3: TAKE STRATEGIC NAPS Naps can be a powerful tool against fatigue. Short naps (10-45 minutes) can significantly rejuvenate your energy levels. It’s important to allow at least 15 minutes to fully wake up before continuing to drive.

TIP #4: AVOID MEDICATIONS THAT INDUCE DROWSINESS Be cautious with medications, including over-the-counter drugs that can cause drowsiness. Always check the labels for warnings about operating vehicles or machinery.

TIP #5: RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS OF DROWSINESS Watch for frequent yawning, heavy eyes, and blurred vision as indicators of fatigue.

Understand that being awake for 18 hours straight can impair you as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

TIP #6: DO NOT RELY ON ALERTNESS TRICKS Methods such as smoking, turning up the radio, or drinking coffee are ineffective at combating real drowsiness and can provide a false sense of security. www.americancranesandtransport.com

Appling joins Brewer Crane

M

ike Appling, Jr. has joined the team of San Diego, CA-based Brewer Crane & Rigging, American Cranes & Transport has learned exclusively. He joins the company as an investor and board member, finalizing his investment in the company on March 22, 2024.

Formerly CEO of TNT Crane and Rigging, Appling and his team built the Houston, TX-based company from $37 million in revenue to approximately half a billion

dollars during his 15-year tenure. He left the company in March of 2023.

Appling has been working with Brewer Crane since mid2023, when President and CFO Brent Garcia reached out to him about a consultant role to help with the company’s strategic plan for growth.

Appling told ACT that he had been familiar with Brewer Crane since 2017, and he worked with the team at Main Street Capital when they invested in the company.

■ BARNHART CRANE AND RIGGING purchased CR HOLLAND CRANE SERVICE of Forest City, IA. The acquisition marks Barnhart’s fifth branch in Iowa, further solidifying the Memphis-based company’s presence in the upper

Midwest, where it also operates branches in Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

■ North American specialized transport operator DASEKE was acquired by TFI INTERNATIONAL in an all-cash transaction worth $1.1 billion. TFI is a Canadian general transport and logistics company that has made 126 acquisitions in the U.S. and Canada since 2008.

Daseke is more involved in specialized transport. It has a fleet of 4,900 tractors, 11,000 flatbed and specialized trailers, plus one million square feet of industrial warehousing.

Daseke is the sixth largest specialized transport company in the world according to the 2023 ICTRANSPORT50 ranking.

In the ACTTRANSPORT50 ranking, just for North America, Daseke is ranked in second place.

■ Industrial services group STEEL RIVER in the U.S. purchased crane and equipment repair specialist WHECO. WHECO repairs, restores and inspects cranes and other heavy equipment worldwide. It specializes in repairing accident-damaged cranes and offers certificates and warranties. Facilities include shops down the west

coast of the U.S. and a shop in South Carolina.

Steel River said it aims to build a lifting equipment solutions platform across the nation. The company said, “The acquisition significantly expands Steel River’s capabilities in its existing markets, bringing expansive new facilities and additional technical expertise on board.”

Adding WHECO’s team of more than 60 employees to Steel River, mostly on the west coast, takes the total above 250.

The acquisition reinforces the Steel River CraneTech division by expanding capability in mobile cranes and aerial work platforms.

■ Rope company SAMSON in the U.S. acquired French rope company CORDERIE HENRI LANCELIN. The deal between Washington-based Samson and Ernée-based Lancelin was for an undisclosed sum.

Lancelin is a fourth-generation family company started in 1907. It is known as an innovator, especially in the field of maritime ropes. It has a testing facility with a machine capable of breaking ropes with a strength of up to 661 tons.

■ The BAY CRANE COMPANIES has purchased two crane service companies in the Mid-Atlantic region from ML HOLDINGS (ML): United Crane & Rigging and Crane Rental Company. This acquisition adds to Bay Crane two fullservice locations in Baltimore,

MD and Capital Heights, MD, along with a fleet of 88 cranes and hoists and almost 200 trucks, trailers and other support equipment.

■ Bennett On-Site Services, operating as BOSS Crane & Rigging and its subsidiary BOSS Heavy Haul, affiliates of the BENNETT FAMILY OF COMPANIES, has acquired over-the-road super heavy haul transport equipment, along with drivers and operational managers, from Cowboy’s Services’ division CSI HEAVY HAUL. CSI Heavy Haul, formerly operating out of Channelview, TX, brings decades of experience as an expert in specialized super heavy haul, heavy haul and trucking services since its establishment in 1983.

■ UNITED RENTALS completed the acquisition of temporary roadway rental business Yak Access, Yak Mat and New South Access & Environmental Solutions from PLATINUM EQUITY for $1.1 billion in cash. Yak rents a fleet of 600,000 hardwood, softwood and composite mats to provide surface protection in construction and maintenance and repair operations, in particular for utility and midstream oil and gas customers.
