Cedar Crest College Logo

The area of isolation surrounding the logo should equal the height of the “E.”

The College’s logo has historic value and is rooted in the ginkgo tree leaf symbol first adopted by the Cedar Crest Alumnae Association. The ginkgo tree has been part of the Curtis Arboretum for more than 90 years. Known for their longevity, ginkgo trees are a symbol of changelessness, unity, love, and hope.

Cedar Crest embodies the strength and stamina of the ginkgo tree, reflected in the College’s steadfast dedication to its mission of educating the next generation of women leaders.

Meet Aubrey...

Aubrey Evans Salisbury High School, Class of 2011 Cedar Crest College, Class of 2015 Aubrey Evans will attend Cedar Crest College this fall. She plans to major in accounting and minor in economics.

A college journey When Aubrey started her search for the right college, she had a few requirements: She was looking for small class sizes and a chance to connect with faculty and students on a personal level. Her college also needed to have strong academic programs that would prepare her for a “real world” career.

“This is my campus” Aubrey’s search led to Cedar Crest College, a liberal arts college for women in Allentown, Pennsylvania. “I met a couple of professors at an open house and they were so friendly,” she said. “I walked on campus and knew, this is where I need to go. Cedar Crest was the perfect choice for me.” She applied to just one college – Cedar Crest – and was ecstatic when she received an acceptance letter early in her senior year.

Aubrey has big plans for her first year of college. In addition to starting business classes, she intends to join student government, work on Cedar Crest’s award-winning student newspaper, and get involved in community service. Because Cedar Crest encourages new students to get involved from their first days on campus, she’ll be able to jump right in this fall!

Until classes start, she will continue to visit campus and prepare for college. “I’ve made a lot of friends already,” she said. “This is my campus.

It’s perfect for me.”

Honors

Students with a record of high academic achievement are encouraged to join the Honors Program at Cedar Crest College. The Honors Program offers students a unique opportunity for growth and enrichment. Honors courses are marked by their engaging classroom environment, diverse and challenging coursework, and graduate-level research experiences. Students in the Honors Program are also eligible for priority course registration and unique leadership programs.

All applications are considered for acceptance into the Honors Program. Eligibility is based on academic achievement and College Board examination scores. Students must achieve a minimum 1150 on the SAT (critical reading and math) or 26 on the ACT to be considered for the Honors Program.

A Brief History of Cedar Crest College

On September 5, 1867, nine young women gathered in a classroom located in the basement of Zion Reformed Church in Allentown, Pennsylvania. They were the first students of the recently established Allentown Female College. Within days, classes moved to the second floor of a building on Hamilton Street.

In 1869 the institution again moved, this time to a two-acre campus at the intersection of Fourth and Turner Streets. The College owned only one structure, which served as a classroom building and dormitory.

Founded by the Reformed Church, Allentown Female College promised a collegiate education in a Christian environment. Some students sought a three-year program that stressed the liberal arts; others trained to become school teachers; and still others desired only a finishing school education. In 1893 the institution changed its name to Allentown College for Women. But most students affectionately referred to their little campus by its nickname, “Clover Nook.”

At the turn of the century, a visionary Board of Trustees imagined a larger and grander women’s college. In 1908 they appointed a vigorous new president, the Reverend William F. Curtis. After a successful fund-raising drive, in 1915 Curtis moved the College to Cedar Bluff, a fifty-two acre tract to the west of Allentown. In the following decades, he put up five buildings in the Italian Renaissance style, enlarged the faculty and student body, purchased more land, and beautified the campus with scores of exotic trees, many of which still stand. At Curtis’s urging, the trustees in 1926 renamed the school Cedar Crest College. Curtis died in 1941, having spent nearly half his life in service to the College.

Curtis was followed by the Reverend Dale H. Moore. President from 1942 to 1967, he eliminated the College’s substantial debt, built five additional buildings, and significantly improved academic standards. Under Moore, the College gained accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

By the end of the Moore years, Cedar Crest had experienced a sea change. If a hint of the finishing school still hung about the campus, the school was less tied to the church and more intellectual than ever before. In addition, the college became part of the rising women’s movement of the 1960s and 1970s. No one personified this spirit better than Moore’s successor, Dr. Pauline Tompkins. A distinguished scholar, Tompkins was the first woman president of Cedar Crest and the first president who was not a member of the clergy. Serving from 1967 to 1978, her most obvious accomplishment was the construction of the modern student center that bears her name.

In the 1980s many women’s colleges suffered from declining enrollments. Cedar Crest was no different.

Under Dr. Gene S. Cesari, president from 1978 to 1988, the school briefly considered an affiliation with Muhlenberg College. At the same time, the College expanded the size of the Dorothy Rider Pool Science Center, and in 1987 U. S. News & World Report ranked Cedar Crest among the top ten liberal arts colleges in the East.

Dr. Dorothy Gulbenkian Blaney became president in 1989. During her tenure enrollment increased significantly, and the campus was enhanced with sculpture and important additions to the science complex.

Blaney invited to campus many distinguished speakers. Guests such as Kofi Annan, the secretary-general of the United Nations, brought national attend and prestige to the College. Blaney served as president until her death in 2006.

When Allentown Female College was established 142 years ago, only the most foolishly optimistic would have expected it to amount to much. Its first class was held in a basement, it was constantly in want of money, and for nearly half a century it possessed only one building and a two –acre campus. Yet the institution managed to survive and flourish. Two months ago, Forbes magazine ranked Cedar Crest among the ten best women’s colleges in the United States. The school had come a long way from its beginnings at Clover Nook.

President Carmen Twillie Ambar The Board of Trustees appointed Carmen Twillie Ambar the 13th president of Cedar Crest College in May 2008. President Ambar is nationally known for her record of accomplishment in higher education and, in particular, her commitment to women’s education.

In her first year, President Ambar launched a comprehensive strategic planning process designed to reaffirm Cedar Crest as a premier liberal arts college for women. Under her leadership, the College has redefined its mission, dedicating itself to educating the next generation of leaders. She has energized and inspired the Cedar Crest community, unleashing creativity around women’s education and leadership in all corners of the campus.

There has been a rethinking of student life to create a more seamless integration with academic affairs; faculty and staff have proposed a number of exciting new initiatives in core focus areas; and a new vision statement, articulating the College’s aspirations for the future, expresses the community’s optimism as the College looks to its sesquicentennial.

President Ambar came to Cedar Crest after a highly successful career as dean of Douglass College at Rutgers University, where she was the youngest dean in the University’s history. She was widely recognized for her efforts in promoting women’s global leadership across all areas of the student experience: developing a cadre of leadership programs, promoting living-learning communities including a human rights house, and securing substantial increases in study abroad funding. She spearheaded efforts to encourage young women to pursue careers in math, science, and technology. She successfully launched the Douglass Alumnae Recruitment Team (DART), re-envisioned the first year academic experience, expanded peer and academic advising services, and oversaw the completion of a $28 million capital campaign. She received an appointment as associate vice president at Rutgers, setting the agenda for a number of issues pertaining to women’s education.

President Ambar previously served as assistant dean for graduate education at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School. She was responsible for many key administrative and academic functions, including curriculum development, management of joint degree programs, and academic support and advising programs for students.

She also directed the school’s summer program for undergraduate students of color.

Prior to her work in higher education, she served as an assistant corporation counsel in the Office of the Corporation Counsel for the City of New York from 1994-98. In her role as an attorney for the City of New York, she participated in several high-profile cases in which she defended the city against constitutional challenges to legislative regulations and also prosecuted criminal violations of the administrative code.

President Ambar was Chair of the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) Board and vice-chair of the New Jersey Advisory Commission on the Status of Women. She was appointed by Governor Corzine to the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and the New Jersey Schools Development Authority Board of Directors.

She has received numerous awards for her work in higher education and in the community. The New Jersey Women’s Political Caucus presented her with the Mary Philbrook Award for exceptional contributions to the public interest. She also received the Executive Women of New Jersey Salute to the Policy Makers Award, the Wynona M. Lipman Award, and the Woodrow Wilson School’s Edward P. Bullard Distinguished Alumnus Award. She is an honorary inductee to the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, President Ambar holds a bachelor of science degree in foreign service from the Edmund A. Walsh School at Georgetown University, a master’s degree in public affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, and a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia Law School.

President Ambar is married to Saladin Malik Ambar and they have two-year-old triplets, Gabrielle, Luke, and Daniel.

The day President Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 inspired communities around the country including Northeast Pennsylvania to form an organization that today is known as North Penn Legal Services. Board members, staff, and other community partners over the past 50 years have worked together to deliver innovative legal aid to the poor.

North Penn Legal Services strives to achieve the four main goals of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. Services are designed to increase the safety net for the poor and unemployed—a key objective of the Act. Staff presents numerous outreach programs throughout the year to educate people about fair housing, landlord-tenant issues, employment law matters, and other current topics.

During our 50th year, we will celebrate our accomplishments and continue our fight in the War on Poverty.

2014 Annual Report

One night after our client returned home from working an 8-hour shift at a local hospital, he found an eviction notice taped to his front door. Like anyone, our client was overwhelmed by this news and could not concentrate on his responsibilities at home or work. As soon as one of our advocates took the case, we discovered that our client needed help with his hoarding issue that was the reason for the eviction. Fortunately, our advocate was able to negotiate an accommodation under the Fair Housing Act which enabled Steve to stay in his apartment and get the assistance he needed to manage his hoarding problem. Steve was able to stay in his “home” where he lived for 15 years.

Bringing Innovation and Accuracy to Local Greater Lehigh Valley Consumers

The Greater Lehigh Valley REALTORS® (GLVR) in October 2016 launched a new and improved home search on its website, www.GreaterLehighValleyRealtors.com. The effort was a joint venture with RE/ Advantage, a web technology company that specializes in producing cutting-edge websites for the real estate industry.

“After hearing feedback from Lehigh Valley consumers as well as our members, GLVR leadership made the decision to make the public-facing home search a top priority in the Association’s Strategic Plan,” said CEO Justin Porembo. “This innovative tool will put the most accurate data at the fingertips of consumers who are looking to purchase homes within the Greater Lehigh Valley.”

And we’re not done! The new home search is flexible and customizable, and it’s a work in progress. Search platforms previously used by GLVR could not be easily changed, which made it difficult to meet the needs of members and consumers.

Why MLS compliance emails are important.

T

he CRS Data Compliance Tool was implemented back in November 2008 in an effort to clean up data within the Greater Lehigh Valley REALTORS® Multiple Listing Service. The MLS Committee and Board of Directors, at that time, determined the compliance emails would help monitor data input, improve staff work flow and, ultimately, correct bad data.

Prior to the Compliance Tool implementation, there were several fields that were being neglected and/or were contradictory to the MLS Rules and Regulations. Missing photos, marketing remarks violations, incorrect area numbers, status change violations, and incorrect sales prices were all common issues. Within six months, the number of violations quickly dwindled. In the years since its initial rollout, CRS

Data and Association staff have added additional checks to the Compliance Tool for missing subdivisions, incorrect compensation comments, and owner’s name violations. The ability to expand the check list remains and is consistently being evaluated based on need and industry changes.

The Compliance Tool also allows staff to expedite the billing process and issuance of warnings and fines. Prior to the Compliance Tool, fines were sent out via certified mail, which was time consuming for staff and a costly expense.

Ultimately, the Compliance Tool is a great asset to the Associations and ensures that GLVR remains the most accurate source of MLS data for the Greater Lehigh Valley.

But, for them, there has been one constant in their profession of choice – family.

We talked to seven real estate families that live and work in the Greater Lehigh Valley.

Here are their stories of family and success in real estate.

Charlie’s children, Donald and Douglas, joined their father in the 1970s and helped grow the business by working with like-minded, professional brokers.

But the legacy doesn’t stop there. Don’s son, Brad, joined the office in 1997 as a sales associate and has since worked his way into a management role. Brad is now a regional manager who works with five Lehigh Valley and five Bucks County offices. In addition, Brad’s cousin, Susan, leads corporate initiatives for the entire 65-office organization.

The company went through a few iterations before becoming what it is today. In 2006, Prudential Patt, White and the Premier Group maintained its name and presence, but merged with Prudential Fox & Roach and the Trident Group. Several years later, in 2013, the company took the opportunity to rebrand as Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and, today, is known as Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach / Trident. According to Brad, this move gave sales associates and clients the benefits of a larger, regional brand, while also maintaining the feel of a family company.

With Don and Doug still working, but taking more time to enjoy life outside of real estate, Brad takes great pride in taking the reins and being a third generation broker. Brad says, “I’m grateful to carry on the legacy my father, uncle and grandfather created. It is a privilege and pleasure to work with such an amazing group of professionals, staff and leaders.”

How has the Patt family made real estate work for so long?

According to Brad, they’ve done it by “sticking to meaningful core values and aligning with true professionals who are passionate about their craft.”

The real estate legacy of the Raad family dates back to 1956 with Harvey Raad, who worked for Pete Garbone, a former president of the Pennsylvania Association of Realtors®. Harvey founded his own office, Harvey Z. Raad Realtors®, in 1962.

Today, 55 years later, Harvey Z. Raad Realtors® maintains its physical presence on S. 4th Street in Allentown, with the help of George, Harvey’s son, and Christopher and Gregory, Harvey’s grandchildren. Chris remembers when he and his brother, at a very young age, would tag along for showings and listing appointments. They’ve come a long way since then, with both becoming licensed and working for their grandfather’s office.

George and Chris are both former presidents of the Lehigh Valley Association of REALTORS® and/or Greater Lehigh Valley REALTORS®. George served as president in 2005, while Chris has served on the Board of Directors since 2011, acting as president in 2015 and 2016. They’ve also served in various capacities at the state and national levels.

In early 2017, it was announced that George would be passing on the torch to Chris, who earned his broker’s license in 2005. Chris is now the broker of record for Harvey Z. Raad Realtors®.

“Continuing a family business is not always easy, but it is one of the most rewarding things anyone can experience,” Chris says.

“I get the biggest thrill when putting my grandfather’s name on our property listings.”

How has the Raad family made real estate work for so long?

Hard work, according to Chris, who adds, “Success in this business is not easy. Real estate is not just a job; it’s a lifestyle and a passion. The best advice is that hard work is the key to success. Sweat + Sacrifice = Success.”
