MUSIC NOTES
Margaret Bonds’ powerful setting of He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands was commissioned by Leontyne Price and is featured on her landmark 1962 recording of spirituals, Swing
Low, Sweet Chariot. The Penitent, which tells the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15: 11-32), was composed by Beardsley Van de Water, a prominent 19th-century organist and church musician in New York City.

Ava Brown, soprano, is a 25 year-old opera singer who has performed all over the country. In 2022, Ava graduated with her BA in vocal performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and she earned her Master’s degree from USC’s Annenberg School in the spring of 2025. Now enjoying some time back home on the Vineyard, Ava continues to share her voice with the community she loves. She has led masterclasses for young performers at a conservatory in Los Angeles and has won multiple awards, including first place in the Schmidt Vocal Arts national competition. Ava has studied at several prestigious programs, including the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and the Boston Conservatory’s summer program. A lifelong summer resident of the Vineyard, she is thrilled to return once again to perform at Union Chapel.
David Behnke, baritone, is a graduate of the Master’s Degree Opera Program at Yale. He was a resident artist with the Tri Cities Opera Company and performed with music festivals across New England.
