“For our family, the most compelling part of the KLS model is the decoupling of academics from independence.

Our son is on the young end of his grade level, and he needs extra help with some personal tasks – but he was also a precocious reader and would have been bored with an ordinary curriculum. We are awed at how well he is supported in both academics and independence simultaneously. His standardized test scores (three times per year) make it evident just how much he is learning, and our conferences with his Advisor help us to understand how he is developing in the areas that aren’t measured by tests.

Another KLS principle that is valuable to us is the open, mixed age concept.

Kai is able to work at his own pace in reading and mathematics, work with the rest of his class in language arts and Spanish, and work with project groups that span various ages. In a sense, KLS functions like a family. Older students seem to feel a responsibility to help the younger ones. I feel like my son has gained a few ‘big sisters’ over the course of the school year!

The teachers are deeply involved with their students. Advisors are endlessly supportive of students’ diverse interests, and they encourage even the youngest students to share what they know and help teach others. Our son has blossomed in this environment – he feels that he has something valuable to contribute, and as a result, he has become comfortable speaking in groups.

Perhaps the greatest long-term impact, though, comes from the school’s emphasis on growth mindset. When our son was frustrated by something that he hadn’t mastered, he used to think that it was something he just couldn’t do. He still gets frustrated, but we talk through what’s difficult, and what he needs to learn or do differently in order to succeed. He is gradually internalizing the idea that he isn’t good or bad at things, just practiced or unpracticed at them. That, as I see it, is the foundation for a lifetime of learning.”

Launch of Upper School Khan Lab School is designed to empower students to take an active stance toward their education – so when creating our new Upper School, we involved students in the process and thought about how the space could facilitate independence. Based on input from students and teachers, we incorporated the following elements.

Laboratory look + feel

“The space is designed to feel like part school, part lab, to encourage further experimentation in educational practices and curriculum,” says architect Danish Kurani. “Windows into AV and STEM Rooms give glimpses of in-progress recordings, chemicals, and tools, and rolling storage bins expose the many tools students have at their disposal.”

Transparency

Our team is continually working on how we can make our work open and accessible while also providing the best learning experience possible for our students and teachers. We’ve created sliding glass walls within the Upper School that enable these rooms to connect to the larger commons, allowing everyone to see the action inside.

Interactive walls + displays

Countertop workspace + comfortable seating

Students can focus on their goals at a countertop or on comfy couches underneath a landscaped wall.

Career & College Counseling

We’ve created a dedicated room where the Career & College Counselor meets with students and families one-on-one to discuss their plans for the future, advise students on how to get there, and provide social-emotional guidance.

Café style seating

Flexible small group seating encourages peer collaboration and community while working toward goals.

Library nook

We’ve created nook seating, surrounded by books, for the moments when students need space to reflect.

Phone booths

To foster communication with experts and mentors, our new space has soundproofed rooms where students and teachers can hold videoconferences.

Breakout rooms

“To foster ownership and relationship, which are key to success in learning, students and teachers share breakout spaces,” says Executive Director Dominic Liechti. In the Upper School, these include designated labs for collaborating, ideating, making, STEM, and STEAM.
