RosseauLakeCollege(RLC) isanindependentcoed dayandboardingschool offeringGrade7through Grade12.Itwasestablishedin1967 asanall-boys’school—itbecame coedin1983—onapropertyabouta 2½-hourdrivenorthofToronto.The schoolisintheheartoftheMuskoka regionoccupying56acreswith 4,000feetofshoreline.Thecampus hasatraditional,modernfeel.Itincludesfourboardinghouses,adininghalloverlookingLakeRosseau, twoacademiccentresandoutbuildingsthatsupporttheacademicprogram.Windowslinetheindoorspaces,andthenaturalenvironmentisa constantpresenceinthestudentexperience.Thereareoutdoorclassrooms,includinganaturalamphitheatrebythewater’sedge.

StudentscometoRLCbecausethey wantaneducation,butalsobecause theyarelookingformore.Theywant tobeengaged,tofindaplacewithina communityofkindredspiritsandtrue academicpeers.Theyintendtogoon topost-secondarystudies,though theyalsounderstandthatschool

ACADEMICLIFE

RLCisapreparatoryschoolin theclassicsenseinthatallthestudentsareplanningtoenterpostsecondaryprogrammes.Academics arerigorous,followingaprogressive liberalartsmodel.Theaverageclass sizeisbetween10and15students. RLCdoesn’toffertheInternational Baccalaureate(IB),thoughitshares manyattributeswithschoolsthatdo. ApplebyCollegeisamongCanada’s leadingindependentdayandboardingschools.Foundedin1911,itisa co-edinstitutionwhere800students studyinginGrades7through12.The boardingprogrammestartsinGrade 9andismandatoryforYear12.The schoolfollowstheOntarioSecondary Schoolcurriculumandcomplements theprogrammewiththeApplebyCollegeDiploma.“Wealsoofferdiplomasofdistinctioningloballearning andgloballeadershipinbusiness, STEM,andthecreativeartsaswellas theAPCapstoneprogramme.We’re knownforourrigorousacademic programandinnovativeapproachto classroomteaching,”saidO’Connor.

Theschoolissoughtafternotonly byresidentCanadiansbutalsoby thestudentfraternityfromacross theglobe.Currently,studentsfrom 47countries,includingtheUAEand otherGCCcountries,areatAppleby Collegeinvariousgrades.“Wehave consistentlyhadfamiliesfromthe UAErelocatinghalfwayacrossthe worldheretogivetheirchildrenthe Applebylearningexperience.”

Thetwomainintakeyearsforday studentsareGrade7andGrade9, whileitisGrades10and11forboarders.“MostfamiliesfromtheGCCopt forApplebyeitheratGrade7orGrade

10,”saysO’Connor,adding,“We’re veryfortunatetohavebuiltareputationandbrandthathaspositionedus asoneofthebestschoolsinCanada, andarguablyoneofthebestschools intheworld.”

About65percentofthestudent populationisCanadian,andtheremaining35percentarenon-Canadiancitizens,fromtheUAE,UK,Hong Kong,Vietnam,Korea,andmany othercountries.

Thekeystrengthsoftheschool areitscommitmenttogloballearn-

Eachyear,about165to170students graduatefromApplebyandheadto 75to80universitiesandinstitutions.

AresidentialprogrammeforGrade 12studentsalsopreparesthemfor collegebyprovidingthemwitha structuredday.Afteraregimented lifeatschool,manystudentsfindunfetteredfreedomincollegedifficult tonavigate.Whatsetssomestudents

apartfromothersiscontinuedfocus anddiscipline.AtApplebyCollege, suchhabitsareinstilledfromearly onandreinforcedduringthemandatoryresidentialprogrammeforstudentsinYear12.

“Ausualdaydoesn’tendat5.30, likefortherestofourstudents.Year 12studentsfollowastricttimetable fortheday,whichincludesmandatoryco-curricularactivities,self-study, andfreetimeintheevening.Followingasetpatternforayearhelps developsomeofthehabitsthatwill stickwiththemwhenthey’reinuniversity.”
