welcome from the principal

Welcome to the King George V College 2015 prospectus. I’m delighted that you’re thinking about joining us.

Coaches. We want to challenge and support you in equal measure, a dynamic combination that will ensure a fulfilling and successful two years of study.

This prospectus will give you a flavour of what the College can offer you and is designed to help you make the right choice.

Enrolling on to the right course is crucial if you are to achieve your dreams and ambitions. We make sure that each and every student has made the right choice through an intensive programme of advice from application through to enrolment. From that point on, the sky’s the limit! We are experienced in supporting students to take their next step, whether that be University or employment, and our success rates are extremely high. I know you too can rise to that challenge.

Firstly, we have an excellent national reputation for achievement. The majority of our subjects regularly achieve pass rates of 100% and over 50% of these passes are at the highest levels, from A* in Advanced Levels to Distinction* in BTEC Diplomas. These fantastic results are achieved through outstanding teaching and learning and exceptional support, coupled with the very best in care and guidance provided by our expert team of Progress

4

Do come and have a look at the College during one of our Open Evenings. You will find a College with a

distinctive ethos and a characterful environment. You will not simply be a cog in a larger machine. We are small enough to have a real sense of care, community and belonging; but we also offer the largest range of A Level and BTEC courses in the area. In addition, you will develop a range of work and personal skills to equip you for success for the rest of your life - as well as a set of memories never to be forgotten. This year sees the opening of our new building and the re-launch of a new, energised and vibrant KGV. Come and be part of our exciting future! Adele Wills

welcome

from our student chair Starting at King George V College two years ago, I'd never have imagined I'd be where I am now – leaving with AAA* results and preparing to study Geology at Exeter University. From the support and high quality of teaching, to the extra curriculum activities, KGV has helped me to develop both academically and as a person. The teachers here offer a very high standard of learning and always made the lessons as varied and interesting as possible. There are many revision sessions on offer and teachers are always very happy to answer questions both in and out of class time. Choosing universities was a daunting process, but the progress coaches who are very approachable, were always there to offer guidance at drop-in sessions and group meetings. KGV offers so many extra-curricular activities for you to get involved in. In July 2015, I participated in a World Challenge expedition to Thailand. We regenerated a school playground, trekked through Khao Yai National Park and then we were able to relax on Koh Samet's beautiful beaches. This was a fantastic opportunity to experience another culture and develop skills such as team work and leadership. You can read more about this trip on pages 23 and 24. I was also the Chair of Student Direct, a student led council that discusses issues that are important to the Students at KGV. It is a brilliant way to get involved in the decision making at the College and the opportunity is open to both first year and second year students. Find out how you could get involved on page 26. My advice for when you start at KGV is to make the most of your time here. You need to throw yourself into the opportunities presented to you and get to know as many people as possible! With all of the changes and improvements that have been made since last September I would honestly say there's never been a better time to come to KGV. I've genuinely enjoyed my time here so much, made so many new friends and it has set me up well for my next stage in life. Hannah Ritchie

student direct

Student Direct is a NUS affiliated student led council and we discuss issues that are important to the students at KGV. We help to create changes around College that we feel are needed to enhance the student experience for the benefit of the current students and those who wish to come to KGV in the future. Student Direct is open to both first year and second year students and will be chaired by the two Student Governors (this year, Charlie Hayward and Cameron Neilson). Student Direct will consist of both first and second year student reps from subject areas across the College who will have regular meetings with the Vice Principal to give feedback and discuss issues of concern. Student reps will also act as Student Ambassadors representing the College at key events such as Open Evenings. In addition, Student Direct will house two sub-groups The Ambassadors and the Social and Charity committee. The Ambassadors, working with marketing will volunteer at College open evenings and events and the Social and Charity Committee will have the responsibility of organising social events and overseeing the College’s involvement in fund-raising activities for designated charities. Students who are not student reps are welcome to become involved as Ambassadors or to join the Social Committee on a voluntary basis. Staff briefings will be used as a way of communicating general feedback from student reps following meetings.

A Levels

What are A levels?

a guide to

A Levels

A levels are traditional, academic qualifications offered by schools and colleges for 16-19 year olds. They're highly valued by universities and employers and are usually completed over 2 years.

How many subjects do I choose? Three or four - most students study four subjects but drop one subject at the end of their first year. You will gain a stand alone qualification (AS Level) in the subject that you drop at the end of your first year of study.

How will I be assessed? Most A Level subjects are assessed through examinations at the end of your two years of study, however for some subjects you may also have examinations at the end of your first year.

How will I be graded? Each A Level or AS Level that you complete will be graded A*- U. In order to pass a subject, you must achieve a grade E or above. Our pass rate at the College is 99% and 80% of our students achieve grades A*-C.

Top Tip We have over 40 subjects to choose from, therefore it can be difficult to narrow it down to just three or four! If you’re unsure what to take pick subjects that you think you will enjoy and do well at. Although it seems like a long way off, do some research into whether any subjects are required for your future career path or university courses that you may have in mind.

SAM KEEBLE Sacred Heart Catholic School Ancient History, Electronics and Computing “I chose to take Ancient History because at an open evening it caught my eye immediately, I've always loved the ancient world and I've never had a chance to study it before. My favourite aspect of this subject is learning about how ancient cultures functioned and about the characters living in them at the time; Did you know you could blame absolutely anything on the gods in Sparta? I didn't. I plan to take this or a similar period of history on to university and eventually take it up as a teaching career.”

Second Year Modules

First Year Modules

1. AH3: Conflict in Greece 460-403 BC. This is one of the most fascinating periods of world history, during which the two great superpowers of ancient Greece, the Peloponnesian League and the Athenian Empire, were engaged in a constant struggle for supremacy. We will also be discovering some of the larger-than-life generals and politicians who made their mark on this period, including Pericles, Cleon, Alcibiades and the kings of Sparta.

1. AH1: Politics & Society of Ancient Sparta. How did Sparta, despite its small population, become one of the most feared and successful military powers in the ancient world? Find out the answer by studying the unique social, educational and political system of Sparta, including the “cheese race” and the exploits of the 300 at Thermopylae. 2. AH2: Augustus & the Principate. How on earth did one man manage to change Rome from a Republic which had lasted 500 years, into a hereditary monarchy? We will be exploring how Augustus, Rome’s first Emperor, acquired power and created a completely new way of running the Roman Empire and the Roman army.

2. CC9: Comic Drama in the Ancient World. We will be tracing the history of comedy over a period of 300 years, and how it reflected changes in the politics, society and economy of the ancient world. Starting with the topical wartime Greek comedies of Aristophanes (think Mock the Week, but written 2,500 years ago), we will then explore how the Romans favoured a different style of comedy, which has become the ancestor of our modern sitcoms and rom-coms.

YOUR FUTURE Studying Ancient History at KGV will enable you to achieve a well-respected qualification in a traditional essay-based subject, which goes down well with universities and employers. We have a particularly strong track record of helping our students achieve places at prestigious universities, including Durham, King’s College, University College London and St Andrews. In recent years, 20 students from our department at KGV have gone to Oxford University to study degree courses in Classical Archaeology & Ancient History, or History (Ancient & Modern). Our former students are now employed in areas such as: museum work, journalism, teaching, publishing, the armed forces, the diplomatic service and international organisations like NATO and the European Union.

We use a wide range of resources to enhance the learning which I find interesting and very relevant to business. I would like to go on to study law at university and then specialise in contract law looking at businesses in more detail.

WHY STUDY CHEMISTRY AT KGV COLLEGE?

COURSE BREAKDOWN

KGV is a great place to study Chemistry. Practical lessons take place most weeks and develop essential skills including, teamwork, communication, analysis and evaluation. This means that you can really relate scientific theory to practice and gain valuable skills which universities desire.

The Chemistry course is linear which means that all AS exams will take place at the end of the 1st year and all A level exams at the end of 2 years. As the course is co-teachable, it is anticipated that all students will follow the AS specification in the 1st year before moving on to the A level specification in the 2nd year. Both courses are split into 3 distinct areas of chemistry:

The Chemistry Department provides you with a comprehensive set of notes to allow you to get the most out of lessons in an interactive and skill-based way; practising questions and developing your exam technique in order to make sure that you are thoroughly prepared for the exams at the end of the year.

1. Physical Chemistry - Including AS level topics such as; atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, energetics, kinetics and equilibria. A level will include; acids and bases, thermodynamics, rate equations and electrochemical cells.

There is a “Chemistry Olympiad” enrichment group which will involve solving “Olympiad” style real world issues in preparation for entering the National competition which takes place each Spring.

2. Inorganic Chemistry - Including AS level topics such as; periodicity, alkaline earth metals and halogens. A level will include; properties of period 3 elements and their oxides, transition metals and reactions of ions in aqueous solutions.

In 2015 the department achieved: 64% high grades at A2, 100% pass rate at A2 and 60% of students progress to STEM related degree courses.

3. Organic Chemistry - Including AS level topics such as; halogenoalkanes, alkenes, alcohols and organic analysis.

A level will include; NMR spectroscopy, chromatography, polymers, carbonyl compounds, aromatic chemistry, organic synthesis and a much greater emphasis on biochemistry including amino acids, proteins and DNA.

YOUR FUTURE Many students initially choose to study chemistry as a means to an end for a career in medicine, veterinary sciences and dentistry but find that they are inspired to pursue chemistry and related science courses at degree level due to the enthusiasm and specialist knowledge of the teachers in the department. 100% of the students who received conditional offers to study chemistry, medicine, dentistry or veterinary science achieved the grades required last year. Many Law departments also like students who have studied chemistry thanks to their excellent analytical and evaluative skills and there are more and more opportunities opening up for science degrees with a language.

Our students have access to a wide range of specialist resources, as well as being taught by specialist staff with postgraduate qualifications & years of research in this field. Our students are also offered the chance to study Classical Greek or Latin from scratch alongside their A-level courses; this gives our students an extra “edge” which enables them to compete successfully for places at top universities.

COURSE BREAKDOWN We currently follow the OCR syllabus. First Year Modules 1. Homer’s Odyssey & Society. An in-depth analysis of one of the earliest and greatest stories ever written, featuring a cast of heroes, gods and monsters. We will also be exploring the nature of the society described in the Odyssey, including its attitudes to women, slavery, kingship and hospitality. 2. Roman Society & Thought. An exploration of the Roman class-system, through the eyes of four different Roman writers, ranging from the reality of Roman life seen through the eyes of a leading senator (Pliny), to the gloriously over-the-top satire of Petronius’ Dinner with rimalchio. We will discuss how Roman writers and philosophers viewed the lifestyles of slaves, senators, freedmen, senators and ordinary citizens, including their diet, work, leisure pursuits and aspirations.

46

Second Year Modules 1. Greek Art & Architecture. In a single year you will become a connoisseur of Greek art, able to identify, interpret and analyse an impressive range of sculpture, including the myths which these sculptures often depicted. We will also study the different styles of Greek architecture and how these types of buildings can still be seen all around us in Southport, Preston and Liverpool. 2. Virgil & the World of the Hero. After reading the Odyssey in the first year, we will move on to the Aeneid, written by Virgil in a deliberate attempt to create a Roman version of the Greek epics. Our main focus on this module, which will also involve reading part of the Iliad, is to explore how the concept of a hero changed from the Greek world to the Roman world, becoming less a quest for individual glory than a sense of responsibility towards your family and your community.

YOUR FUTURE Our students enjoy Classics so much that every year between 40-50% of them choose to study Classics or a related course (Archaeology, Art History) at university. However, Classical Civilisation is a well-respected A-level subject which can support university applications for any degree course (former students who took Classics alongside Science subjects have gone on to study Medicine, Dentistry or Biology at university). ISOBEL MADLE Merchant Taylors Girls Philosophy, English Literature and Classical Civilisation “I had never taken Philosophy before and I knew that it would help to develop my critical thinking and debating skills. I will go to Nottingham University and then work in International Relations.”

WHY STUDY PHILOSOPHY AT KGV? Subjects that compliment Philosophy: Law, Psychology, Mathematics, Biology/Physics/Chemistry, Sociology, Ancient History, Classics, History

Enrichments: Philosophy Symposium, Debating Group, EPQ

Philosophy literally translates as ‘love of wisdom’. Popularly defined as ‘thinking about thinking,’ Philosophy probes deeply into ordinary opinions and convictions on almost every topic – morality, politics, psychology, physics, biology, religion and law.. Following correct principles of reasoning, Philosophy takes familiar ideas apart and investigates fundamental issues raised with the sole goal of gaining genuine knowledge. It is often argued that an understanding of oneself and one’s place in the world can only be gained through serious thinking and investigation of philosophical questions. This attitude, which clearly captures what philosophy is about, is neatly summed up by the ancient Greek Philosopher, Socrates, who declared that ‘the unexamined life is not worth living.’ If you enjoy thinking and reflecting on these fundamental questions, then Philosophy is the course for you. Philosophy will give you the skills to think logically and critically. You will be taught, not what to think, but how to think. Philosophy at KGV is known for its outstanding performance and high levels of student enjoyment. The 2015 results maintained this excellent record with 100% pass rate at A2 and 43% high grades. Such high level achievement and satisfaction is complemented by Philosophy’s own debating society, the symposium and several enrichment opportunities in the form of guest speakers and visits.

COURSE BREAKDOWN First Year Modules 1. Section A: Epistemology Do we experience the world as it is or is human perception merely an interpretation of the world? What is knowledge? What can we know and how do we know that we know?

94

2. Section B: Philosophy of Religion Is there a God? Does the universe show evidence of God’s existence? Does morality transcend God or is God the source of all moral goodness. Can the attributes of God be reconciled with the existence of evil in the world? Is Religious language meaningful? Second Year Modules 1. Section A: Moral Philosophy (Ethics) Is there objective moral truth i.e. is anything right/wrong for all cultures, time and persons? How do we decide what is morally right? Are our ethical statements mere expressions of our subjective feelings about situations or are they descriptive of a moral reality. 2. Section B: Philosophy of Mind What is the relationship between the mental and the physical? Are the mind and the body separate and can either exist without the other?

YOUR FUTURE Previous students have gone on to study a variety of degree courses, with the majority opting to study philosophy and the prestigious PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics). Philosophy prepares you for the kind of rigorous thinking and critical analysis valued in a wide variety of fields. Big business – the City firms, banks, management consultancies, chartered accountants – are enthusiastic about people who’ve done philosophy, because they know how to think clearly and rigorously. Philosophy students also go into law, politics, and the civil service. Journalism and Advertising are other choices, and of course, last in this very incomplete list, but never least, there’s always education! Philosophy students do better in verbal, writing and mathematical skills and therefore make great teachers.
