WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL WELCOME

to the King George V College prospectus. I am very excited to be working at KGV and I know that you will feel the same way if you decide to join us. It can feel overwhelming to be faced with so many choices but I hope that this prospectus, and the staff you meet when you visit us, will help you. I want to use this introduction to tell you a bit more about the College generally and what being a student here means. KGV has an excellent national reputation. Achievement is always impressive with more than 40 subjects regularly achieving a pass rate of 100%, over 50% of these passes at A/B or Distinction level, fabulous results on any measure. These fantastic results are achieved through the combination of two factors: the dedication, drive and devotion of the staff; and the focus and discipline of our students. Together, this creates the vibrant learning community that is KGV. You will find your time with us challenging and you will be stretched to develop new skills, but relations between staff and students are also tremendously warm and positive and students are always telling me how much they enjoy their learning. If you decide to join us, we will talk to you at an early stage about how to be successful in your studies. This includes a clear set of minimum standards and expectations around attendance, punctuality and independent learning. We are here to support you on your journey to become a young adult and to provide you with the skills and confidence to take your next step, whatever that might be. We also believe passionately in the importance of the individual and our additional support for students is first-rate. I hope you take the opportunity to visit us on one of our Open Evenings in the Autumn term where you will be able to talk to our staff and students and see the College and amenities for yourself. We believe that education should cater for the needs of all students and we constantly strive to ensure that we offer the most diverse and extensive range of courses. I wish you the very best of luck for your final year at school and look forward to joining you in your first step towards an exciting future.

WHICH COURSE DO I CHOOSE? Before you can decide which subjects you would like to study, you need to consider which type of course you would like to take. The two options at KGV are A levels or BTEC Extended National Diplomas: both are full time, level 3, two year programmes which can lead to study at University, job opportunities or apprenticeships.

Do I have to complete coursework or take exams?

A level subjects are mainly exam based although some subjects have coursework elements. BTEC subjects are totally coursework based with no exams.

How many subjects do I study?

On an A level programme, you will have 3 main subjects. On a BTEC programme, you study 1 subject throughout the 2 years

DISCOVER 5

What GCSE grades do I need? For an A level programme, you need 5 A* to B grades at GCSE or equivalent: 4 grades should come from actual GCSEs. You should also have at least a grade C in either Maths or English Language. For a BTEC programme, you need 5 A* to C grades at GCSE or equivalent: 3 grades should come from actual GCSEs including GCSE C grade in either Maths or English Language Or A merit in a relevant BTEC level 2 Diploma and GCSE C grade in either Maths or English

Do I need anything else?

Can I take a mixture of A level and BTEC courses?

Some subjects on both programmes have further qualification or skill requirements. These are explained on each of the subject pages in this prospectus.

KGV offers 2 BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas in Health and Social Care and Music Technology. These are the equivalent of 1 A level and can be studied within the A level programme.

Which subjects go well together?

It is important to gain as much information and advice as possible. Come and talk to us when we visit your school from Year 9 onwards, try out some of the courses available during Year 10 taster days and also visit College during one of our Open Evenings. These will all give you an idea of what KGV is like but also make use of the teachers and Careers Advisors at your own school to help you make informed decisions.

The subject pages in this prospectus will give you some ideas of suitable combinations of subjects. It is also worth considering the skills you will gain and the type of assessment used: some subjects develop your essay writing abilities to a higher level, some increase your ability to analyse effectively and others are more practical in nature.

What if I just can’t decide?

Don’t panic! Pick subjects which you think you would do well at and also enjoy: the more you enjoy a subject, the better you are likely to do. If you have an idea of long term career plans, it is also worth investigating what subjects may be needed to gain a place on a relevant University course or training scheme. We talk through subject choices during your course discussion ... and you can change your mind both at that stage and until the end of the summer term. 6

INDEPENDENCE We asked our students what the biggest change was when moving from high school to KGV and almost every student mentioned their new found independence!

At KGV, we believe that independence is an important trait to develop whilst you study with us. When you arrive here, you are regarded as a young adult and are given the freedom to make your own decisions when it comes to managing your work and behaviour. But don’t worry, although you’re expected to act more responsibly, you are not alone and we have a strong network of support for you to access should you need it.

OTHEr CHANGES TO GET uSED TO One of the biggest things you will notice at KGV is the lack of bells ringing through our corridors! Unlike school, we expect you to time manage yourself and move between lessons without a noisy reminder. You are also asked to call your teachers by their first names…no more Sir or Miss! This takes some getting used to but our students have said it helps them develop a closer relationship with staff and feel more comfortable when asking for help or advice.

yOur STuDy DAy An important aspect of your new independence is your Study Day, a day once a week when you do not have any timetabled lessons. This day is different for both first and second years and it is up to you how you use it.

DISCOVER

Many students travel into College on the coach as normal and make use of the resources in our Learning Centre or meet with teachers to discuss their work. Others prefer to study at home. Enrichment activities or revision workshops may be scheduled on the study day and you can also enhance your CV by organising a 6 week work placement through our Careers team. If you’re up to date with your studies you can schedule in some well-deserved R&R but remember that if there are any concerns with your work, you will be requested to attend College on the study day until we see an improvement.

KGV strives to continuously update our facilities in line with student feedback i.e. you tell us what you think needs improving and we will look at what we can do! Over the past 3 years KGV has undergone multi-million pound refurbishment and this is set to continue with the recent announcement of the development of a brand new building due to open in 2015. In 2012 the College Learning Centre was revitalised with ÂŁ1.2million worth of improvements made to this area. The vast

colourful space now has over 100 computers and laptop plug-in stations in addition to the numerous paper resources in stock. You can even book out a private study room or group working space if you need an area to bounce ideas around for your latest group project. In summer 2013 we waved goodbye to our traditional wooden science benches and welcomed in a totally revamped Science block with modern work stations and brand new resources.

The KGV Refectory has been transformed into a comfortable environment for students to chill out and enjoy their free time at College. You can pick up a slice of pizza from the hot food counter, enjoy a healthy lunch from the salad bar, grab a snack on the go from the KGV Shop or have a sandwich or panini made to order. We also serve Starbucks coffee at a subsidised price should you ever need an early morning caffeine kick! Even the College bathrooms have had a recent refurb to guarantee top of the range

hygienic facilities for our students. Following a successful bid in September 2013 for additional Government funding relating to building projects, work has now started as planned on KGV’s new Creative Arts building due to open in 2015. The building will provide state of the art facilities for students studying a range of subjects including a modern Art Studio, vast Performance Hall with retractable seating and Media rooms equipped with all the latest technology.

Over the past year the KGV Charity reps have raised over £2,000 for Derian House by co-ordinating bake sales, selling seasonal gifts and participating in external events including a weekend of bag packing in Morrisons, Southport. TRIPS AND VISITS Many of our courses offer trips or arrange visits that will broaden your subject knowledge whilst giving you a break from classroom based learning. Last year KGV Language students enjoyed the annual French Exchange, whilst our Artists were treated to an inspirational workshop from Jeanette Barnes (Royal Academy of Arts) and our Geologists studied fossilised millipede footprints on the rocky coast of Arran. Even the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, stopped by at the College to answer our student’s questions on national and international issues! There’s something to look forward to for every subject area so ask our staff at an Open Evening what exciting ventures their course has lined up for next year!

Greenbank High School A2 French, A2 English Literature, A2 Geography and EPQ Enrichment

WHAT SuBJECT DO yOu LOOK fOrWArD TO THE MOST AND WHy?

The independence I have and the lessons I study. I have learnt so much, and I have never enjoyed studying as much as I do now. But I think a big thing is all the new people you meet, and the friends you make. As cheesy as it sounds, I’ve made some amazing friends at College, and that is something that really makes College life fantastic.

That’s tricky, as I love all my subjects for different reasons! Geography teaches me about important current affairs such as globalisation and climate change, English Literature is so interesting as I love learning about so many different texts and the context behind them, and French is the subject I want to continue at University as I love learning about the Francophone culture, and of course the language itself. French is the subject I feel myself getting better at day-by-day, which is really motivating and I look forward to going to every lesson.

HOW DO yOu THINK KGV COLLEGE IS DIffErENT frOM HIGH SCHOOL?

ArE yOu INVOLVED IN ANy CLuBS OuTSIDE Of yOur A LEVEL PrOGrAMME?

WHAT DO yOu ENJOy MOST ABOuT COLLEGE LIfE?

Although I was never a shy person, I do feel like I am less afraid to be myself at College as individuality is encouraged. I’ve been able to study what I want and I just find it really chilled and enjoyable.

WHAT MADE yOu PICK KGV? I never actually considered anywhere else but KGV. I went to Greenbank, where the language department is fantastic, so I wanted to go to a college that had a great language department that would carry me on from GCSE, and KGV really has that. I just generally liked the feel of the College, and I felt it would give me a really good education as well as allowing me to be more of an adult and meet new people.

I am involved in Interact club, which helps to raise money for both international and local charities. I am also just coming to the final stages of my Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), where I have written a 5000 word dissertation style piece on French societal norms. I had to choose my own subject matter and title, and it was a lot of personal study, but we had sessions twice a week where the teachers really supported us! It has been a challenge but the teachers keep us motivated and I am really proud of my work.

SO WHAT NExT..? I hope to study French and Russian at the University of Bristol and I want to visit as much of the world as possible! I’d love to work for the EU in the future.

We then spend time looking at the different models and theories, examining how they work and the implications for us, firms and everyone in the economy. We analyse and evaluate the actions of the government in attempting to improve the economic position of the UK and compare their actions to those made in other economies.

As well as studying the content of the specification, we spend a lot of time looking at exam questions and developing the techniques you will need to help you perform well in the exams.

PHILOSOPHY WHAT CAN PHILOSOPHy AT KGV OffEr ME?

Do I really have free will? What is the fundamental nature of the universe? Does morality really exist? Do we have a human nature? Is there a meaning to life? What makes art valuable? Can we ever know anything for certain? Who am I? – if you enjoy contemplating questions such as these, Philosophy may be the course for you! Philosophy literally translates as ‘love of wisdom’ and is concerned with questions of how one should live, what sort of things exist, what counts as genuine knowledge and determining the correct principles of reasoning. It is often argued that an understanding of oneself and one’s place in the world can only be gained through serious thinking and discussion of philosophical questions. This attitude is neatly summed up by the ancient Greek philosopher, Socrates, who declared that ‘the unexamined life is not worth living’.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD PHILOSOPHy STuDENT? By far the most important thing is to have a natural interest in philosophical and ethical ideas; those who already find themselves pondering ‘the big questions’ tend to find this subject highly rewarding and stimulating. You will need to have achieved a GCSE grade C in English, English Literature or English Language.

WHAT CAN I ExPECT frOM PHILOSOPHy? At AS Level you will study: Units 1 & 2. In these introductory units, you will be engaging with problems which have occupied the world’s most prominent philosophers for centuries. •

Do we experience the world as it really is or is human perception merely one interpretation of the world? • Why should I be governed? What would life be like without rulers?

A LEVEL • •

Do we acquire knowledge through thinking rationally or through experience? Does the universe show evidence of God’s existence? Does the existence of evil rule out the existence of God? How does the religious perspective differ from that of the atheist?

At A2 level, you will extend your philosophical knowledge, understanding and skills through the study of Epistemology (what can I know?) and Metaphysics (what really exists?), Political Philosophy, & Nietzsche's text, 'Beyond Good & Evil'.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? At AS level, by two 1.5 hour written exams. At A2 level, likewise, assessment will be by two written exams. There is no coursework requirement for Philosophy.

WHICH SuBJECTS GO WELL WITH PHILOSOPHy? The ability to think critically, creatively and with clarity is as relevant to Philosophy as it is to Art, History, Politics, English, Psychology and Mathematics. Whichever combination you choose, Philosophy can help you to flourish in your studies.

WHErE CAN PHILOSOPHy TAKE ME? Many students go on to study Philosophy at university, sometimes in combination with other subjects. Those going into Medicine, Law, Journalism, or Politics find the skills developed in studying Philosophy particularly valuable - every hospital, for example, has its own ethics committee to oversee the kind of life-and death decisions we discuss in Moral Philosophy. Philosophy is a life-enhancing subject where the emphasis is on self-development, self-understanding, and social integration; so, whatever you choose to do, studying Philosophy will help you to do it better and lead a more fulfilled life.

STUDENT PROFILE TOM WALSH

Birkdale High School BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport

WHAT DO yOu ENJOy MOST ABOuT COLLEGE LIfE? Independence. I love being given the opportunity to manage my own time, as it prepares me for studying at University. My Progress Coach has given me the tools to plan my own future and I have been inspired by teaching staff within the College. I also enjoy spending time in the canteen. The food is good, there is plenty of room and the atmosphere is very relaxed.

HOW DO yOu THINK KGV COLLEGE IS DIffErENT frOM HIGH SCHOOL? In many ways, it is far more independent than High School. The approach to learning is very self-reliant and if you fail you only fail yourself! The work is harder and more intense, however the staff are very good at guiding you through the work without doing it all for you.

WHAT MADE yOu PICK KGV? I didn’t want to attend a college that was already attached to a High School therefore, as KGV is the only independent sixth-form college in Southport, I applied straight away. The variety of courses is very good and gives everyone here an idea of what they can do when they reach university or later on in life.

69

ArE yOu INVOLVED IN ANy CLuBS OuTSIDE Of yOur A LEVEL PrOGrAMME? I frequently play for the College Football Team which is a great way to meet new people that I wouldn’t necessarily meet outside of my course. Ultimate Frisbee is a new craze within College and I have participated in this on numerous occasions. It is another way to keep active and develop skills. Badminton is one of my main sports and we often set up our own badminton court in the Sports Hall during our free periods. I sometimes coach my classmates and anyone else that turns up, but the emphasis is to have fun and relax and that is what we do. All these enrichments have been very valuable, as I use sports as a coping mechanism when I have lots of work do to and need to let off steam.

WHAT IS yOur fAVOurITE ASPECT Of THE BTEC SPOrT COurSE? My relationship with the course staff. It helps when completing assignments, as they are supportive, encouraging and always want me to achieve my best. I am very grateful for their guidance throughout this year.

SO WHAT NExT..? For years now I have been fixated upon becoming a PE Teacher in a Secondary School. I want to inspire the teenage population to maintain their passion for sports and exercise. I also want to complete more coaching qualifications and hope to open my own Tennis Summer School over the Summer Holidays.
